Residents Remain Skeptical of Mercer Expansion Plans BY DAVID LUCES DLUCES@TBRNEWSMEDIA.COM Scores of Head of Harbor residents voiced their opposition and called on the village Planning Board to reject proposed plans for a 8,633-square-foot maintenance shed on property owned by hedge fund billionaire Robert Mercer. Many who spoke at a Dec. 10 public hearing stated that the rural character of the village would change, and that the maintenance shed was too big for the neighborhood. Others expressed concerns that the Mercers have additional projects in the works such as adding a guest house on their close to 70-arce Owl’s Nest property. Christopher Modelewski, Huntingtonbased lawyer representing Mercer, said the shed would only take up less than 2 percent of a two-lot section of the property and the architects would make it into a “beautiful barnlike structure.” Mercer representatives said the structure, called a “tool shed,” would house equipment used to maintain the Owl’s Nest property,

including lawn mowers, golf carts, trailers and other vehicles. Neighbor Michael Folan, who lives on Thatch Meadow Farm with his wife and two other friends, said the proposed development would impact their day-to-day life. “Nobody stands to be impacted like we do, the northern end of this project will start 70 yards from my kitchen window, we’re the closest residents to this proposed project,” he said. “Mr. Mercer worked very hard for his money, he can spend it however he wants to. For him this would be an occasional diversion. It would be a daily hindrance and a nightmare for us.” Other neighbors said the shed would block scenic views of Thatch Meadow Farm and Stony Brook Harbor and were concerned about the increase of noise and light pollution construction would bring. Constance “Conky” Nostrand, owner of Thatch Meadow Farm, whose estate is

adjacent to the Mercer property, said the shed would threaten the location of her water supply and asked for a 30-feet buffer to be reinstated. According to Nostrand, she reached out to the village a few times regarding the buffer with no responses. She said village officials have left her in the dark on the — Michael Folan situation. “ Yo u act like I don’t exist,” she said. “Thatch Meadow Farm is one of the last Smith estates that has not been split up and developed.” Anthony Coates, village resident, said he is not convinced they have seen the last of the guest home plans and opposes the construction of the tool shed.

“We still maintain this is the wrong structure in the wrong place,” he said. “It needs a full SEQRA review.” Coates added due to the application being incomplete, the planning board should make the developers go back to the drawing board on any proposed plans. Harlan Fischer, planning board chairman, said the board would not vote on the proposal until it was revised by Mercer’s representatives. The application, he said, was incomplete and inaccurate because of the inclusion of proposed plans for a guest home. In response, Modelewski said those additional plans were meant to not “see the light of day” and was never the subject of a site plan review. He admitted that submission was a mistake and that they would withdraw it. Fischer said it would be better for the board to have a thorough review of the application before moving forward. The public hearing could continue on Jan. 28 at 5:30 p.m. if revised site plans are resubmitted in time.

Officials React After Jury Convicts Former DA on Corruption BY DONNA DEEDY DONNA@TBRNEWSMEDIA.COM Jurors rendered the verdicts Dec. 17 for former Suffolk County District Attorney Thomas Spota and the head of his corruption bureau Christopher McPartland. On the charge of conspiracy to tamper with witnesses and obstruct an official proceeding against Spota and McPartland: “Guilty.” On the charge of witness tampering and obstruction of an official proceeding against Spota and McPartland: “Guilty.” On the charge of obstruction of justice against Spota and McPartland: “Guilty.” The case revealed local corruption and coverups that required the assistance of the U.S. Department of Justice and the FBI. Some officials, who have issued formal statements, say they are thrilled with the outcome, including current Police Commissioner Geraldine Hart and Suffolk County Legislator Rob Trotta (R-Fort Salonga). “As we learned, the very people charged with upholding the law were the ones who were found guilty of assisting James Burke in his attempt to get away with his crime,” Hart stated. “Instead of being leaders and standing up for justice, they did their best to manipulate the system and everyone who stood in their way.” Trotta, a former Suffolk County police detective and an often outspoken critic of the department, said he feels vindicated. “It is unfortunate for the honest and dedicated cops that these men thought they were above the

law and could get away with anything,” Trotta said. “Thanks to the great work of the United States Attorney’s Office and the diligence of the jury, justice will be served.” Spota and McPartland were indicted in Oct. 2017 on federal charges for covering up the crimes of former police chief James Burke. In 2012, Burke, a St. James resident, was charged and convicted of assaulting Christopher Loeb, of Smithtown, who broke into Burke’s department-issued SUV that was parked in front of the former police chief’s home and stole a duffel bag allegedly containing a gun belt, ammunition, sex toys and pornography. Burke, according to prosecutors, beat Loeb inside the 4th Precinct station house in Hauppauge. After being sentenced to 46 months in prison, Burke was released Nov. 2018. He completed his sentence under house arrest in April 2019. Both Hart and Trotta have suggested that related investigations continue. “We have been monitoring this case closely and remain in contact with the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District,” Hart stated. “We are also in the process of reviewing all of the testimony and evidence presented at trial, and upon further review will take appropriate action if warranted.” Trotta is particularly concerned about rooting out further corruption, an issue central to his 2019 reelection campaign. “Unfortunately, this trial exposed that corruption continues in Suffolk County and

hopefully the United States Attorney’s Office will continue its investigation into Suffolk’s widespread corruption problem,” Trotta stated. “It’s embarrassing that the DA, chief of corruption, chief of police, chair of the conservative party have all been arrested and found guilty in the past few years.” However, Hart holds a more positive outlook.

“We want to assure members of the public that the current leadership of this department is committed to integrity, honesty and professionalism,” she stated. “I am continuously impressed by the work and level of commitment by our police officers and residents of this county should feel proud of their police department.

St. James Fire District

Voters have elected Kit Gabrielsen as a commissioner of the St. James Fire District for the single open seat on the five-member board. He secured 390 votes. Ryan Davis, who currently serves as fire chief, also ran for a seat on the commission. He got 315 votes from the community. Incumbent Bill Kearney received 115 votes. The election means the district will operate in the new year with a majority of commissioners in support of maintaining operations at the historic St. James firehouse, one of two firehouses in St. James.

Commack Fire District

The Commack Fire District reelected Peter Paccione for his second five-year term as fire commissioner. He ran unopposed and received 110 votes. The proposition to amend the Defined Benefit Plan was also approved with 115 voting yes and two voting no. The amendment approves a $30 per month cost per month accrued for each calendar year of service to be paid to firefighters. The retirement benefit known as the Length of Service Award (LOSAP) is available at age 58 for members who qualify by making at least 50 points, year every year, for up to 40 years. Points are awarded to service members for achieving quotas for responding to fire calls and attending training sessions and meetings and being an officer or chief. Service members are vested after five years. This new change will be effective starting Jan. 1, 2020, and is not retroactive. The estimated annual cost is $170,000.

Snowman Factory at St. James St. James Elementary School in the Smithtown Central School District turned into a snowman-making factory when the kindergartners started assembling snowmen Dec. 16. Set up in the school’s multipurpose room, the students, along with an adult volunteer, created snowmen out of socks ﬁlled with rice. They used fuzzy socks to create a hat and scarf before attaching eyes and a carrot nose.

Obeid’s daughter Marya Hannun recalled her mother as “warm, honest, and funny” without being cynical. Marya said her mother cared about everyone around her and was rooting for them to succeed. “During my childhood, she taught me that nothing was impossible if you are determined and gutsy,” Marya Hannun wrote in an email. She suggested her mother was passionate about food, which shaped how they lived and traveled. When the family visited Greece, Obeid swam out for sea urchins, cracked them on rocks and ate them on the beach. She was a passionate cook who learned from her mother, Rosette, who wrote a Palestinian cookbook. The Hannun family laughs “about how we plan out holidays around food and spend our meals talking about the next meals,” Marya wrote. Obeid was part of one of the first class of women admitted into the International College High School. She earned her bachelor of arts at Rutgers University, but was also creative as a child and interested in fashion and design. “Anyone who [saw] her wouldn’t be surprised,” Marya said. Obeid is survived by her husband, her parents, Rosette and Sami, her nieces and nephews, her triplet children and her two grandchildren. Obeid and Hannun’s daughter Reem is married to Dr. Khaled Moussawi and lives in Baltimore. Awni and his wife Kathy Hannun have two children, Evelyn and Yusuf, and live in New York City. Anastasia Sawicki, of Rocky Point, passed peacefully Dec. 7. She was 87. She was the beloved wife of the late Theodore J.; the loving mother of Irene (Arthur) McKeown, Stephen (Leigh) Sawicki, Catherine (Nicholas) Koridis and the late Theodore J. Sawicki Jr. In addition, she was the adored grandma of Julianne, Gina, Joseph, Jillian, Arthur, Jacob, Thomas, Andrew, Alexandria, Melina, Nicholas A., and Gregory; the cherished great grandmother of

Junior guard Paige Doherty led the way for the Bulls with two treys and three ﬁeld goals for 12 points. Senior Kate Cosgrove sunk three from the charity stripe and three ﬁeld goals for 9 points along with nine rebounds; and sophomore Jackie Shaffer netted 6. Letters to the Editor

Lend Us Your Words No Such Thing as Partisan Data

There’s something brilliant about a letter. In fact, one of the best ways to test one’s writing skill is in the art of correspondence. Try reading “A Life in Letters” by Eric Blair, aka George Orwell, to see the unique power of the written word. Each and every one of our readers letters has power and each and every word counts. Just like news stories, your letters might be capable of prompting change, or inspiring another individual, typically in 400 words or less. With that power, every letter writer also has a responsibility to readers, and we at TBR News Media would like to clarify just what is at stake when you send in a letter to us. As journalists, we are the community’s closest connection between people and government, covering news and events that impact people’s lives on the local level. We especially welcome letters that touch on recent articles, even if it’s something as seemingly benign as roadwork near your house or a neighbor down the road setting off fireworks well past July 4. We edit for A.P. style, which is the standard in most U.S.based news publications. If you were wondering why we only use a person’s last name after the first reference, for instance, that is why. It helps maintain coherence over the many thousands of words contained in each and every issue. But we also edit for length, libel and good taste. These last three items that have especially been a bone of contention for some of our writers. Lately, many of our letters relate to national issues and the policies of President Donald Trump (R) and include incessant squabbling between the two major political parties. We would never alter your opinion, but we do have an obligation to make sure the facts you cite conform with the truth. We ask that our writers provide sources or backup information with letters, so we can fact-check the information. We’ve received letters using derogatory nicknames for Trump, former President Barack Obama (D) and other legislators and political figures. We have done our best to edit out this potentially defamatory language. Some writers might disagree with this. But, we have also received letters berating other letter writers, and we have looked to soften that language to invite more civil discourse. Our view is the “Letters to the Editor” page serves as a form of public debate. Its purpose is to argue the issues, not personally attack an individual. Yes, please send us letters on what you think about the issues of the day, but when letters cross the line, they cheapen or even invalidate their arguments to knock at a supposed rival, or to drag people who live close to us through the mud. We make a conscience effort to fairly represent opposing views to avoid discrimination. In fact, we find it most interesting and useful when we include letters from people on multiple sides of an issue. The majority of letters we get today concern the national discourse, and are essentially a mirrored reflection of the tirades and proceedings we see from people who are supposed to represent the best of us, the majority of us. Let’s raise the bar. Instead of parroting the rhetoric of politicians and pundits, who regularly resort to insults, rely instead on the laws of logic and critical thinking. Analyzing arguments in the free marketplace of ideas is one hell of a responsibility. We the people hope we all take that responsibility seriously. Since accountability is the basis of democracy, let’s give it the gravity it deserves.

In my research lab, there’s no such thing as partisan data. Scientists are trained to study the facts, test the findings, and produce the most accurate information. Sometimes, the facts differ from what we thought going in, but our hypothesis doesn’t change the facts — the facts change the hypothesis, as we try to understand what’s really happening. Lee Zeldin’s recent interview with TBR shows at best a refusal to look at facts and at worst a willingness to lie to his constituents about the actions of the president. Zeldin repeatedly refused to answer the questions posed to him by the TBR editorial board, including when he was presented with the wellestablished facts regarding President

Trump’s solicitation of help from a foreign government while withholding congressionally authorized aid. His only response was that he disagreed with the premise of each question. Throughout the impeachment proceedings, the facts have been corroborated by career officials’ testimony and documents. The facts remain undisputed by the White House or the president’s allies, including Zeldin. These facts are uncomfortable for all of us. Nobody goes to Congress to impeach a president — but when a president’s actions are incompatible with democratic governance, it’s the only option. A representative should be able to look at the evidence and draw conclusions,

comfortable or uncomfortable, without regard to their own ideology. Time after time, Zeldin has shown he is unwilling to view issues with an open mind, put country over party, or hold power to account. While Zeldin has spent his time on Fox News attacking Democrats, he has refused to sign bills to restore SALT deductions or lower prescription drug prices. He has attempted to erode gun safety legislation, reduce safety protections for clean water, and decrease access to high quality, affordable health care. It’s time that we demand, as residents of Suffolk County, that our representative fight for us, rather than defend a corrupt president. Nancy Goroff Stony Brook

fairground and wooded acres at Gyrodyne will add to the already worsening traffic congestion on Route 25A, Mills Pond Road and Stony Brook Road. It would require a large sewage treatment plant on the grounds that will discharge thousands of gallons of wastewater into the groundwater, which flows into Stony Brook Harbor, endangering its pristine water quality and delicately balanced ecology. An Unusually Tasty Rubber Chicken Event

hey are called rubber chicken dinners for a reason. Much of the time, corporate events masquerading as social gatherings offer little in the way of ﬂavor, taste or entertainment. This one, however, had so much potential. A group invited my wife and me to attend a football game. The connection came through my wife, who interacts regularly with our hosts and received the invitation months D. None earlier. When we of the above read the invitation, BY DANIEL DUNAIEF we knew she could invite our son, although we also knew he had two midterms the day after the big

game, which meant that I could escort her. I have, on occasion, demonstrated a surprising nimbleness in jamming my foot into my mouth. Unintentional and harmless though the effort may be, I have worked hard to pull back on (a) sharing too many details, (b) making too many jokes and (c) asking anything about controversial topics. We walked into a suite, where our host immediately caught my wife’s eye and shook her hand. I’d met him several times and he graciously welcomed me as well, although I realize my decidedly unimpressive place in the world. My wife had given me a rundown of the people we’d likely meet, even as I tried to look over some of their shoulders to watch the football game occurring past the tray of appetizers, the plate of sliders, the collection of untouched cookies and the bowl of half-eaten popcorn. A woman whose name had made the list shook my hand and smiled at me. I waited the usual three seconds to see whether she was planning to bolt to chat with someone more

interesting, more powerful, taller, better dressed or more well versed in the world of football. After all, she was wearing a football jersey and, while my son can name the rosters of most teams because of his fantasy football acumen, I’m much more limited in this sport. She, however, kept looking me in the eye, encouraging further conversation. We described the lives of our children. That generally constitutes safe topics, so I was on terra ﬁrma. When I asked where she grew up, she said California until she went to high school on Long Island. I’m not sure why I asked because Long Island is truly a huge place, but I wondered what school she attended. She told me it was in Setauket and it was called Ward Melville. Wow, I replied, I went there, too. She said she was on the tennis team and we both remembered the name of the coach who had been there years ago, Vicki Goldfarb. My new acquaintance’s father, as it turns out, was a ﬁghter pilot who had

moved to Grumman when he became an engineer. It became a remarkably detailed conversation. She lived about a mile away from me for ﬁve years, until I graduated a few years ahead of her from Ward Melville. When she excused herself for a moment, I ﬁgured that I might have overplayed the conversation. At that point, I tried to get a closer look at the football game, until my wife and I started talking with our hosts about their family’s skiing adventures. As we started to leave, I once again found myself chatting with the Ward Melville graduate. She shared a few more compelling stories about her family and her life, including an adventurous trip to Green Bay, where her husband celebrated a landmark birthday in the snow and cold. This was, decidedly, not a typical rubber chicken event for me and one that I hope continues if we follow up and get together some time in 2020. And, in case you are wondering, I don’t think I committed any social faux pas.

New Haven is not any different, neither is the University of Chicago and wherever there are universities adjacent to neighborhoods that are prone to crime. “As of Dec.8, there had been 20 robberies inside Morningside Park or on its perimeter this year, compared to seven in the same period last year,” wrote The New York Times. The article continued, “Since June, ﬁve people reported being robbed on or near the staircase at 116th Street and Morningside Drive, near the spot where Ms. Majors was killed.” Why, then, was the park not better patrolled by the New York City Police Department? That’s what compiling those statistics is for, yes? To send help where help is most needed? This is an issue the NYPD will have to deal with in coming days. The other metropolitan area tragedy at the top of the news at the moment is the slaughter of four innocent people in Jersey City Dec. 10 by, according to reports, a couple of heavily armed drifters. While those investigating the murders are not saying much while they work on the case, there seems little doubt that this was a

hate crime directed speciﬁcally against both the police and one segment of the population: Jews. Why do people hate? Particularly why do they hate strangers, people they don’t even know? It’s a question as puzzling as why people would ever want to kill each other. For bigotry to be so strong as to result in violence is unfathomable. For that matter, why conclude that just because people are different, they should therefore be despised? In fact, they might be thought of as more interesting for their differences. Which brings me back to my original thought. If everyone is praying for peace, why is there war? Why is there violence? Why is there bigotry? Why is peace so elusive? Is peace, real peace, impossible because of the makeup of humans? Will there always be a Hitler and a Stalin, a Napoleon, Vikings and an Attila the Hun? Still, let us pray for peace, however hard to imagine. Let us keep this idea alive before us as a goal someday to be realized. Let us work to make our world less violent, less ﬁlled with hate, less bigoted. Maybe the operative word is “less?” That we surely can do.

At this time, probably more than any other in the year, we pray for peace: “on earth peace, good will toward men.” Never in the history of the world were people more united than in this wish. dark, although it was only 7 o’clock on a Wednesday evening, Dec. 11. Ostensibly the cause was a robbery gone bad. Her death is a personal tragedy for her family, her friends, the neighborhood, the Barnard and Columbia communities and all New York City. I know. I’m a Barnard alumna and my roots are in New York. The murder tugs at my heart. I lived on the Columbia campus for two years, only a short block from the park. One thing I understood: Don’t go into the park at night. So I have lots of thoughts, lots of questions. Why was she there? Was she not told that simple fact? At the ﬁrst assembly of my entering class, the president of the college cautioned us about safety in the neighborhood, warned us where to walk and how to be safe. That was a different time, I acknowledge, over a half-century ago, when the city was a more dangerous place. But dark places in any city can be dangerous anywhere in the world. The president was trying to teach us urban smarts. Are the new students still getting that important message on many
