Smithtown Supervisor Patrick Vecchio (R) is now a permanent resident of town hall. The Town Board voted Tuesday, the 350th anniversary of Smithtown, to dedicate the building at 99 West Main St. in honor of Vecchio in front of a packed public meeting — a move that caught the sitting supervisor off guard, leaving him speechless and teary-eyed. Vecchio took to his office in

town hall after the motion and sat down, while wiping tears from his eyes. “I’m overwhelmed,” Vecchio said. “Didn’t see that coming.” He kept to business as usual once the resolution was adopted, asking the public if there was anyone who wished to be heard before closing the meeting. The idea was only days in the making, according to Suffolk County Legislator Robert Trotta (R-Fort Salonga), who worked alongside state Assem-

blyman Mike Fitzpatrick (RSaint James) to honor the 38year supervisor. The legislator commended the town board in a statement Tuesday for what he called a well-deserved action. “Supervisor Vecchio has been a longtime friend, neighbor and mentor of mine,” Trotta said. “I am thrilled that the building where he has spent the past 38 years leading the town of Smithtown will be named in honor of him.” Fitzpatrick said he and Trotta found the honor most suitable and worked alongside McCarthy and the town board to find the most appropriate place to dedicate to the supervisor. McCarthy had floated the idea of naming town hall in his honor and Fitzpatrick said it was an easy idea to get behind. “We’re all town residents. We’re all constituents. We’re all friends,” Fitzpatrick said. “He’s done a great job. He’s been the steady hand at the ship of Smithtown and he’s most deserving of the distinction.” The supervisor shifted his eyes around the room in confusion as Councilman Thomas McCarthy (R) read the official resolution.

“It’s hard to keep a secret from him,” McCarthy said in jest. “I don’t think he knew.” The councilman said he tried to persuade Vecchio over the weekend to call a special Town Board meeting for Tuesday night, when the councilmembers would be celebrating the town’s anniversary at the Smithtown Arts Center. But Vecchio stayed by the book, forcing the councilman’s hand to announce the dedication at the 2 p.m. regularly scheduled town board meeting. He and Vecchio placed the original resolution, signed by each member of the board, into a new time capsule marking the moment. In it, the town remarks on Vecchio’s life, being born in Manhattan’s Little Italy; being raised in Bensonhurst, Brooklyn; moving to Smithtown in 1968; and serving as supervisor for 38 years and counting. “During his illustrious tenure as town supervisor, Patrick R. Vecchio has enriched the lives of generations of town residents and maintained an unwavering commitment to fiscal responsibility,” the resolution read. VeCCHIO continued on page a8

Smithtown turns back clock for 350th anniversary

Take members of the Smithtown Town Board, dress them up in 17th century garb and the rest is history. Officials commemorated the town of Smithtown’s 350th anniversary sponsored by the Smithtown 350 Foundation Tuesday with the opening of a time capsule and were joined by residents who braved the snow to attend the event at the Smithtown Center for the Performing Arts. Town historian Bradley Harris hosted the night’s proceedings and was joined onstage by Supervisor Patrick Vecchio (R) and his colleagues who wore elaborate 17th century period clothing and read passages from the Richard Nicolls Patent of 1665 — which outlined instructions for governance under English rule of what are now the states of New York and New Jersey. Throughout the presentation Harris and those town officials that participated onstage engaged in playful banter and delivered light-hearted jokes that often

got a rise out of the Long Islanders who watched from their seats. As the night progressed, Harris often pulled from the pages of history and delivered facts about the founding of Smithtown that those in attendance might not have otherwise known. Despite the witty quips and wisecracks exchanged in the theater room of what used to be a local cinema, the 71-year-old historian and Saint James resident was quite serious and resolute about the importance of preserving history and the passion he holds for his community. “This town is very interesting because it started with one man’s dream to carve out a niche for himself where he would be his own master and I think that’s [Smithtown founder] Richard Smith in a lot of ways,” Harris said. “He’s left us so many things to venerate.” During the course of the event, eyes were drawn to a 50-year-old milk can worn with age, which sat to the far right of the stage. sule was originally buried in 1965, and thanks in large part to the town Engineering Department, which had a precise map of its location, its contents were ready to be shared for the first time with audience members. Town officials and residents were on their feet and the excitement filling the room was palpable. With a hard crack of a hammer, the time capsule was forced open and placed on the long table, where Vecchio and his colleagues were seated. Among the contents contained within the milk can were: two dusty hats, a phonebook, a local newspaper, a flyer advertising tercentenary pageant tickets and an assortment of aged coins. James Potts a resident of Smithtown, who has lived in the area for 63 years, was among those in attendance. Potts’ father was the town surveyor, and, due to this, Potts claims to have a very strong knowledge of the town’s history. Asked about the night’s presentation, Potts said he was very happy with how

things shaped up. “As you can see from how the theater filled up, it shows you the extent of the connection in this town with the residents and basically the pride in the town that they live in,” said Potts. While he enjoyed the event, Potts expressed some disappointment with the contents of the time capsule and felt as though there could have been more items included that could have better illustrated what life was like on Long Island in the early 1960s. Also expressing his dismay with the time capsule finds was Harris, who as a historian expected a lot more. “It was the era of Kennedy’s assassination, and I would’ve thought there would have been some commentary on that, but there was nothing and that’s a little disappointing,” said Harris. “The guys who made up the time capsule certainly were trying to stir interest in the past and they did that, but what we learned tonight was very limited.”

Third time’s a charm Police said a 38-year-old Smithtown woman was arrested in Smithtown and charged with three counts of second-degree possession of a forged instrument. The woman forged false prescriptions and a doctor’s signature and presented the fake prescriptions to a pharmacy on Route 347. The incidents occurred between Dec. 20 at about 2 p.m. and Feb. 26 at about 1:50 p.m. Police said the prescriptions were for some kind of pain medicine. She was arrested on Feb. 26.

Town officials announced the town’s recycling rates had increased by nearly 25 percent since the program’s launch in January 2014, therefore saving taxpayers more than $287,000 to date. Romaine said earlier this year that solid waste was an ongoing concern in the town of Brookhaven and singlestream recycling helped to address that, increasing the overall amount of garbage being recycled by nearly 25 percent.

Smithtown is pouring another $200,000 into its salt and sand budget. An unforgiving winter has forced the Smithtown Town Board to unanimously approve a $200,000 transfer from its contingency coffers to the Highway Department to fund another 1,000 tons of salt, town officials said Feb. 26. It was the second such transfer over the last several months, which Highway Department Superintendent Glenn Jorgensen said was not unusual given the amount of snow blanketing the town’s roughly 470 miles of roadways this winter. Smithtown’s 2015 adopted budget allotted the same total — $450,000 — for sand and salt as the previous year’s budget. But by the end of 2014, Smithtown had spent a total of $976,664 on those items. Jorgensen said he expected a similar result this year as this winter wraps up and the next one begins at the end of this year. Jorgensen said the price of salt went up this year about $5-per-ton, forcing the town to shell out $68.75 for each ton of salt it purchases. “On scale of last year’s totals, this is pretty much the way it is,” he said. “I’m going to say the number has pretty much been about the same over the past few years, around that $900,000 mark. I just want to make sure we have safe roads for the residents. It’s important.” Smithtown has already seen close to 40 inches of snow so far this winter, compared to a figure closer to 50 inches one year ago, the National Weather Service reported. Earlier this year, the Town Board had approved a transfer of $175,000 out of the Highway Department’s patching program to pay for more salt, but that money has dwindled with each passing snowfall, Jorgensen said. “There is still only 600 tons of salt I have yet to receive from that first transfer,” he said. “Now, we just ordered another 1,000 out of the $200,000 that was transferred. It just keeps flowing.” The town allotted a total of $958,000 for all snow removal budget items in 2015, just as it did the prior year. But last year the town ended up spending nearly $2 million in total, including expenses from overtime, sand and salt, patching, street sweeping, equipment rentals and changes in inventory, budget figures showed. The town of Huntington, by comparison, spent close to $4 million on snow removal by the end of 2014, according to its current adopted budget.

Ice floes on and around Crab Meadow Beach in Northport have caused a charity plunge scheduled for this Sunday to be postponed. Public safety officials have advised Camp Sunshine to postpone the Long Island Polar Dip, an annual event to benefit kids with life-threatening diseases who attend the camp and their families. “Local public safety officials have determined that ice floes on and around the beach would make entry into the water too dangerous for polar dip participants at this time,” the camp wrote in a statement. “We will

let you know when a new date and time are set.” The money from the plunge fundraiser sends kids and their families to the camp, a place where they can relax together for a week and “take a break from the extraordinary demands placed on them on a daily basis,” a press release about the event said. The camp is nestled along the shores of Sebago Lake in Casco, Maine. Camp Sunshine’s retreat program includes a 24-hour on-site medical and psychosocial support. The camp also offers bereavement groups for families who have lost a child to illness.

A police officer saved a young boy who was home with his older brother when he had a severe allergic reaction to a candy bar containing nuts. According to the Suffolk County Police Department, a 911 caller reported the Nesconset boy’s medical problem at about 3:25 p.m. on Wednesday, and 4th Precinct officer Robert Fulton responded to the home. Fulton gave the boy, 12-year-old Gavin Oggeri, oxygen and an injection from an EpiPen — a device used to administer epinephrine, which treats allergic reactions — that had been prescribed to him. Oggeri, who police said was at the Lincoln Avenue home with his 15-year-old brother at the time of the incident, was treated at Stony Brook University Hospital. Police said Fulton is new to the police department, joining in October after serving 15 years with the county parks department police force. - Elana Glowatz

Smithtown High School West’s Thespian Troupe and Stage Tech Club recently won first place in the Stage Tech Challenge competition at the 18th Annual High School Theatre Conference of the New York State Theatre Education Association in Callicoon, N.Y. More than 700 high school students from throughout the state attended more than 100 workshops in technical theater, acting, dance and voice. Representatives from area colleges and universities, as well as other theater professionals, provided expert instruction. “Meeting and sharing interests with other similarly minded students from every region of the state is important in working collaboratively, gaining self-confidence and exploring new areas of learning,” said Jim Brannigan, adviser of the HSW Thespian Troupe.

Kings Park preps for fifth annual St. Pat’s parade Brother-sister duo picked to serve as grand marshals This year’s March 7 Kings Park St. Patrick’s Day Parade grand marshals are brother and sister Margaret Kirby Foley and James Kirby. Margaret and James, along with siblings Pat and Dennis, are the children of Peg and Dennis Kirby. Born in New Jersey, the Kirby family moved to Kings Park when Margaret and James were very young. Their grandparents hailed from County Mayo, Ireland. Margaret married Frank Foley,and together they have seven children: Patricia, Mary, Michael, Dennis, Thomas, James and Mark. They have seven grandchildren and a great grandchild. Frank passed away in 2011 as did their son, Tommy, in 2013. James and his wife Beatrice have two children, Kelly and the late James Jr. They have two grandchildren, Allison and Jimmy. Margaret graduated from St. Joseph’s School in 1940. She attended St. Dominic High School in Oyster Bay and St. Catherine’s Hospital nursing school in Brooklyn. Margaret cared for community members while working at Huntington Hospital, St. John’s hospital in Smithtown and St. Johnland nursing home in Kings Park. After graduating from St. Joseph’s in 1941, James attended Kings Park High School, which he graduated from in 1945. He attended Pilgrim State Psychiatric

Center School of Nursing, received a B.S. from Adelphi University in 1959 and then attended Cornell University, School of Industrial and Labor Relations. James, a proud U.S. Navy World War II veteran, served as commissioner of the Suffolk County Department of Social Services from 1965 until his retirement in 1983. He also served as secretary and assistant treasurer for the Board of Fire Commissioners for the Smithtown Fire Department from 1990 through 2008. Both Margaret and James hold a deep love for family and the community. Margaret has served as vice regent in the Catholic Daughters in Kings Park and has done extensive fundraising for the Sisters of St. Dominic in Amityville. James, among other community affiliations, has been active in the Father Seyfried Council of the Knights of Columbus, Donald C. Munro American Legion Post #944, Smithtown Fire Department, Smithtown Booster Club, Smithtown Elks and United Way of Long Island. Margaret and James have unselfishly served family and community their entire lives and, as such, have been proudly chosen as grand marshals of the 2015 Kings Park St. Patrick’s Day Parade. - Phil Corso

The snow did not stop the Smithtown 350 Foundation from completing a successful historic marathon through town in celebration of its 350th anniversary. Residents crossed Main Street despite snow and sleet to deliver a ceremonial baton to Supervisor Patrick Vecchio (R) before a joyous gathering at town hall. Town Historian Bradley Harris hand delivered a 1665 town patent to the su-

Eagles soar in Suffolk Wrestling The Hauppauge wrestling team was crowned Suffolk County team champions on Sunday, Feb. 15, at Hofstra University. In addition to the team championship, Hauppauge put five wrestlers in the finals and notched seven individual place winners. Jake Silverstein was the Suffolk County champion at 106 pounds, while Francisco Bisono took home the championship at 170 pounds. In addition to his victory, Silverstein was recognized as the Champion of Champions for his performance, which is an award voted on by the other county champions. Ben Tepperman, Chris Mauriello and Marcus Bisono were runners-up at 120, 160 and 182 pounds, respectively. John Donahue took third at 152 pounds, while Alex Donarumma finished fourth at 220 pounds. The Suffolk County team champions title is the first for the Eagles since 1999. “Congratulations to all members of the varsity wrestling team as well as to coaches Chris and Mike Messina and their staff,” said Dan Butler, Hauppauge’s director of Physical Education, Athletics, Recreation and Family & Consumer Science. Together we can make a difference

important causes are only successful when a whole community stands behind them, which is why we are calling on our readers to participate in the upcoming head-shaving events for the St. Baldrick’s Foundation to support research into childhood cancers. That participation can be shedding locks or just opening a wallet — either will make a difference. According to the National Cancer institute, part of the National institutes of health within the U.S. department of health and human Services, the most common cancers overall are breast, prostate, lung and colon or rectal cancer. But the most common childhood cancers are types such as leukemia, lymphoma, brain cancer and bone cancer. The institute estimated that almost 2,000 U.S. children and adolescents younger than 19 died of cancer in 2014. While childhood cancers are not as prevalent as others and the mortality rate is not off the charts, each case tugs at us for many reasons: There’s no one we love more than our children; kids are innocent, and some may not even be able to understand their own suffering; and there are few losses more tragic than those of lives that had been bursting with potential and dreams unfulfilled. There are small things we as residents can do to help ease that suffering, even if it is in the slightest of ways. That is why we hope readers of this newspaper will find some way to participate in the St. Baldrick’s Foundation’s cause. For more information about events in your area, see page A2.

Comptroller pledges office of efficiency To The ediTor: As i complete my first few months as the newly elected Suffolk County comptroller, it is my intention to make sure that my role, as your fiscal watchdog, is as transparent as i promised it would be during the election cycle. The average citizen is not often aware of the responsibilities of the comptroller’s office. The comptroller heads up the department of Audit and Control, which consists of four divisions: payroll, accounting, audit and municipal financing. Also, as a result of the successful referendum to merge the treasurer’s office with my office, we will be acquiring all the duties of the county treasurer by 2018. With the recent announcement that Treasurer Angie Carpenter will be leaving the county to

become the islip Town Supervisor, it is my hope that the county Legislature will take action to enact the merger as soon as possible so that we can immediately incur savings that i estimate to be upwards of $400,000 in the first year. My office is fully ready to take on this responsibility. Suffolk County has a budget of $2.8 billion and a population of approximately 1.5 million people — more people than 11 states. As part of my initiatives to protect your tax dollars, my office is not only looking for ways to monitor spending, we are also looking to find technological ways to make this office and county government run more economically and efficiently. one of my goals is to go as paperless as possible by making payments to our vendors and employees electronically. The county currently issues over 200,000 paper checks per year to our vendors. Considering the cost of check stock, postage, ink and man-

power we will be saving precious time, money and resources. in an effort to be more accessible to citizens, i am beginning a major overhaul of the comptroller’s website which is located at suffolkcountyny.gov/comptroller. Celebrating the moment with the right cookie

y wife makes the best chocolate chip cookies in the world. I recognize designating something as the “best” is subjective. Sometimes, it’s not what’s in them that counts, but who makes them; although it’s impossible to imagine a softer, more flavorful cookie.

I recently celebrated a birthday with those cookies and, in the moment that I ate them, I could have been five, eight, ten, or even 16 years younger. Maybe I was returning from a run in Central Park, delighted to catch the scent of those cookies as I reached the fourth floor of my five-story walk up. A few weeks before my birthday, my wife and I celebrated a wedding anniversary. While 15 years isn’t exactly a milestone, it’s one of those “0” or “5” numbers that we who live in a base-10 system recognize. When you’ve been married for more than a decade and have kids, you tend to focus much less on “how are we doing” than you do on “how are they doing.” The “they” refers to the small people who look so delightful and charming while sleeping, but who have figured out how to make us see red when they fight

with each other, argue with us, or chew through time by checking Instagram, looking at the latest scores, or needing one more snack before moving to the next activity. While we reflect on the relationship that started it all during anniversaries, we hope our spouses know what we’re thinking and what we need on our birthdays, even when we ourselves can’t come up with anything we’d like. And so it was recently, when my family arrived early at one of our birthday restaurants. We go to these places to celebrate the start of another year because they serve kid-friendly food and they and the other patrons are indifferent to a sudden shout, an unexpected move, or an argument. We were so early that, to borrow from Dr. Seuss, “We sat in the parking lot, we sat there, we two (plus our kids), and we said, ‘How we wish we had some-

thing to do.’” My wife suggested we go to a batting cage. Our children, who practice softball and baseball through the year, groaned. Neither of them wanted to put on a helmet, find batting gloves and hit another ball at that moment. “It’s not for you,” my wife said, her eyes widening in a way that suggested they shouldn’t challenge her. “It’s for him,” she insisted, pointing to me. I wasn’t sure I needed to hit balls, either. The first batting cage was far too crowded. We found another one just a few miles down the road. I bought a few tokens, borrowed my daughter’s bat, dug in and took a few practice swings. The first contact between bat and ball was like a spark that traveled through my brain and back to my youth, to a time when hitting a baseball was the most exciting thing I could imagine in a day. I didn’t clobber every pitch and I

didn’t win a World Series, even in my mind. I just did what I tell my kids to do all the time: see the ball, hit the ball. I didn’t think about deadlines, responsibilities, or chores. There was no driveway to shovel or dishwasher to repair. There was only an approaching baseball and the tool in my hands to hit it. t started off simply enough. We were going to get a break from the wicked weather, get out of town and enjoy a little rest. I had fallen on black ice, hurt my back and this would be a chance to recover with no other responsibilities. Sounds innocent, right? So there I am, sitting on a deck outside my hotel room, propped up on some pillows, reading a good book, when my cell phone rings. “Hello, Lee, this is Harold.” It takes me a

moment to register that it is my next-door neighbor back home. “Lee, I just drove up my driveway, and I have to tell you that it sounds like you have a garden hose gushing inside your house. I know you are on vacation, but I thought I should call to tell you. Lee? Lee? Are you there?” I didn’t faint, but I considered it. Here I was, almost 2,000 miles away, and there is water gushing in my house because of cracked pipes. It took me some moments to pull my wits together, such as they were. So what does one do when one receives such a phone call? I offer this as a primer, and I will leave out the hysteria. In rapid succession, I called the plumber, another member of my household who was not home at the time but close by, my friend, another neighbor and the insurance company. After carefully taking down all the details, my insurance company called a restoration company, who came with giant fans to dry things out and a small instrument with twin

sensors to detect where there was water. And there was plenty of water—behind the walls, in the insulation, in the padding under the carpets, in the clothes closets and every other inch into which a droplet might fall. Then there were all the logistics to arrange: someone had to let in the restoration company and be available for them while they worked, someone had to authorize the work, someone had to sort through and mop up the wet and damp things in the rooms. And someone had to keep me informed of what was needed at any given moment. As the days went by, we ran up considerable phone time, and then we were scheduled to return. At that point, we were told two startling bits of information. First, I was assured that I shouldn’t be too shocked when I entered my house. After all, they had to strip the sheetrock, remove the ceilings, take off the light fixtures, transfer all the furnishings from the affected rooms into the

unaffected rooms, and generally rearrange my interior world. That was just part one. Part two was that it was snowing heavily in New York and flights were being cancelled all over the country. This was complication beyond the obvious. With my bad back, I was going to face the prospect of long delays in airport terminals and questionable departures. And the poor driver who was waiting in New York to pick us up and take us home! How long would he be stuck? Little did we, or he, know, he was about to spend the night at my house. Sleep over, you say? Yes, because when he finally drove down the driveway to my front door at 3 a.m. and lifted out the luggage, he discovered his car was stuck on the ice and he wasn’t leaving — at least not until after sunrise, when someone could be called to free him. Storms make for strange bedfellows, so to speak. So he slept uneasily in my most comfortable living room chair as

his wife called to check on him, in the night. And finally, a neighbor who is an early riser perceived the difficulty, got out his snow blower and enabled the driver’s escape. I will confess that, despite the gentle warnings, when I walked into my house and viewed my wall studs and ceiling beams and the general rearrangement of my favorite things, I almost lost it. Furthermore, my back was hurting and all I wanted was to brush my teeth and get into my own bed, which eventually did happen. So, what I can advise at this point, if you are planning a vacation, is to leave a key with one of your neighbors, along with the phone number of your plumber, and directions on how to find the shutoff for the water main. And upon your return, when people ask how your vacation was, just laugh.
