It only started five years ago, but the Kings Park St. Patrick’s Day Parade has already grown into much more than just an Irish-themed parade — it has become a staple celebration for the tightly knit North Shore community. Kevin Denis, sometimes referred to as “the professor,” started the parade in 2011 and said the growth has been exponential with each passing year, due in part to Kings Park’s strong Irish pride, but also because of his neighbors’ willingness to participate. This year, the parade committee announced it would welcome former Smithtown Councilman Bob Creighton as its grand marshal in what is anticipated to be one of Long Island’s biggest parades of the year, drawing thousands from Kings Park and beyond. “This parade is a community parade,” Denis said. “Even

though it’s a St. Patrick’s Day parade, the whole community supports it. Everybody wants to jump on board. It’s a great day for the entire town.” This year’s parade, scheduled for Saturday, March 5, at noon, is slated to include more than 20 bagpipe bands, floats, community groups and more showing off pride for the Irish and for Kings Park. The parade typically steps off at the corner of Lou Avenue and Pulaski Road, continues down Main Street, turns onto Church Street, and ends down Old Dock Road at the William T. Rogers Middle School. Kevin Johnston, a teacher from Kings Park and longtime member of the community, has worked on the parade’s committee and said a key to the parade’s success has been its year round effort. Within two weeks of the final march down Main Street, Johnston said the committee gets right back to work to start planning for the next year’s events, including the now-coveted grand marshal ball, which announces the grand marshal PaRaDe continued on page a8

“Every second counts to a mother whose son or daughter was found and saved from overdosing,” said Suffolk Legislator Kara Hahn (D-Setauket). “And every hour and every day that slips by trying to find quality, affordable, accessible treatment is critical.” Suffolk County Legislature Presiding Officer DuWayne Gregory (D-Amityville) said the initiative is essential, as heroin deaths in the county have nearly tripled since 2010. “This alarming data demands our immediate attention,” he said. “A centralized hotline for people in crisis is a critical step toward saving lives, but we must do more.” Legislator William “Doc” Spencer (DCenterport) echoed the same sentiments and said the area’s substance abuse issue touches the lives of more than just those who suffer from addiction. “Often, there is a critical and brief period of time when a person sees clarity and makes the decision to seek help,” he said. “This hotline can be fertile ground for change and recovery as it can quickly link residents to crucial health care services.”

The path to overcoming opioid addiction will soon be just a phone call away, thanks to a new initiative that the Suffolk County Legislature announced last week. A new full-service substance abuse hotline will serve as what officials called a lifeline to residents battling drug addiction, which lawmakers have been struggling to address across Long Island for years. To get there, the county teamed up with Stony Brook Medicine and the state’s health department as well as the county’s private and public community partners in the substance abuse field to allow residents to call to get screenings, referrals and follow-ups. The Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence will operate the 24-hour hotline and direct callers to those resources. Providing a single phone number to call for a myriad of resources and services is key to assisting those who are battling addiction and their families, officials said. “Like many places in this country, Suffolk County is facing an opioid epidemic of historic proportions,” County Executive Steve Bellone (D) said in a statement. “We need to tackle this epidemic on all fronts — including prevention, treatment and law enforcement.” Bellone said his administration has made it a top priority to “explore and launch new, evidence-based tools” to help address the region’s fight against heroin and opioid use. “The creation of a local 24/7 hotline is now another tool in our arsenal to assist those who are battling opioid and heroin addiction and their families,” he said. The hotline will become live by April, Bellone said, and the Suffolk County health department will provide oversight and analyze data to monitor its effectiveness and identify trends and emerging issues in the community.

Smithtown makes turn off bumpy road Vecchio appoints new highway superintendent By Alex Petroski

The Smithtown Highway Department turned the page on a tumultuous 2015 on Tuesday, when Supervisor Pat Vecchio (R) swore in newly appointed Highway Superintendent Robert Murphy. Murphy, 52, served as the interim superintendent after Glenn Jorgensen resigned in October and pleaded guilty to charges that he falsified public documents. Jorgensen, who had been in the position for about six years, was also accused of sexually harassing one of his employees. Murphy was deputy superintendent from 2012 until the beginning of his interim term this past year. “I’m confident that Mr. Murphy will continue to perform as he has over the past few months,” Vecchio said in a phone interview. “He’s open to suggestions for efficiency.” Vecchio also said he’d received more complimentary calls from the community regarding the highway department’s handling of two snowstorms in 2016 than any other storms he can remember. The supervisor was responsible for nominating Murphy to take over as the permanent superintendent, and the board unanimously approved him. “It is an absolute pleasure to appoint Mr.

Robert Murphy as Smithtown highway superintendent,” Town Board member Lisa Inzerillo (R) said in an email. “Many phone calls from Smithtown residents have come in letting us know what a wonderful job Mr. Murphy has been doing. Robert demonstrates dedication to this position, highway employees and the residents of Smithtown; therefore, appointing Robert is the best decision for our town.” Murphy said in an interview that he has about 25 years of experience in the engineering field, and a business management degree from the University of Phoenix. He and his wife Kim both graduated from Smithtown High School East in 1981, and he has lived in Smithtown his whole life, minus a 12-year stay in Arizona. Murphy returned to Smithtown about six years ago, and before becoming deputy highway superintendent, he spent about two years as a capital projects manager for Suffolk County. He and his wife, who manages an East End Disabilities Associates group home in Riverhead, have a 25-yearold daughter and a 20-year-old son. “I’m a people person,” Murphy said, when asked which of his qualities would help him in his new position. “I’m a facilitator. I love to get things going in the right direction, and that’s what’s happening at

the highway department right now. Communicate with the people, show them respect and they’ll give respect back.” Murphy said he believes a key to his position is bringing jobs and projects to workers that will leave them with a sense of pride. And Vecchio said he’s noticed an uptick in worker morale since Murphy took over. “For the four years that I was there and then the interim period, you always

think, ‘Let’s change this,’” Murphy said. “Now it’s on your shoulders and you’ve got to make sure you try to implement different things and see if they work and just be a good leader. If you’re a good leader, then guys will follow, and I think that’s the biggest thing.” Murphy said that he’s looking forward to the challenges and work that he has ahead of him.

Kids have a gift for giving back By Victoria Espinoza

Two kids from Fort Salonga are focused on giving back. The Manfuso siblings, 12-year-old T.J. and 11-year-old Isabella, are credited as the founders of Gifted Hearts, a 501(c)(3) charity that provides medical care packages and school supplies to children in need, both locally and internationally. Their website described it as an organization founded “by kids, for kids,” and the kids have been clearly steering the ship. T.J. and Bella invited their friends to partake in packing parties throughout the year, where all the care packages Gifted Hearts donates to needy children are gathered and assembled. T.J. said there are usually about 20 friends helping out at these parties. “The packaging parties are a lot of fun,” Bella said in a phone interview. T.J. added that it was most fun to be able to have a party while also helping people. Recently, Gifted Hearts had a packing party at Ben & Jerry’s in Huntington Village, where Suffolk County Legislator William “Doc” Spencer (D-Centerport) also paid a visit. “I was so impressed with the giving hearts, vision and organization of these young people,” Spencer said in a statement. “It’s inspiring to see them taking the lead to provide for the needs of other children throughout the world.” Parents Charlotte Rhee and Paul Manfuso have been taking their kids on adventures with them around the world since they were about 5 years old, and they said the kids were always encouraged to learn and give back to the places they visit. “We want our kids to see that traveling isn’t just about ourselves,” Manfuso said in a phone interview. “We want to promote giving back to where we go and making connections with the kids they see, so we don’t just drop off supplies and go.” The family has traveled to Ecuador, Costa Rica and more, stopping at schools to meet students T.J. and Isabella’s age and hand out school and medical supplies and backpacks. “My favorite part is to see the smiles

on everyone’s faces when we deliver the packages,” Bella said. T.J. said he loves learning new things when he travels to these places and seeing how other people live. “I’ve found it so different; people over there are less fortunate than us, but they are very happy,” he said in a phone interview. “It’s a different way than how we live, but they’re totally happy with it.” Rhee said Gifted Hearts is also community-oriented, and the kids like to focus on helping their neighbors as much children abroad. “There are so many needy kids in our own backyard,” Rhee said. “You don’t always need to go to other countries.” Gifted Hearts donated winter coats, boots and Christmas gifts during the holidays this past year, which they gave to the Junior Welfare League of Huntington Inc. Right now, the family is personally funding all the donations they give to children at home and overseas, however they said they are hoping to start organizing fundraising events in the near future. T.J. said his future sights are also set on Bhutan, a country in South Asia. He said he and his family hope to travel there soon with supplies. “They are really motivated and grateful for all they have,” Rhee said of her kids. “And their friends help out a great deal. They continue to help Gifted Hearts grow.”

Commack’s Santiago victorious at speech and debate tourney Austin Santiago, of Commack, currently a student at Suffolk County Community College, took third place in the Persuasive Speaking category while participating in his first ever speech and debate competitions. The speech and debate team from SCCC’s Michael J. Grant Campus placed second at the New England Championship held at Emerson College on Feb. 21 and, for the first time in team history, advanced to the final round of every event they entered. “What made the victory so special is that Suffolk was the only community col-

lege at the tournament and we were competing against some of the top schools in the country, including George Mason University, currently the number-one ranked school in the nation,” said team advisor Christopher Holfester. “Suffolk students ranked higher than George Mason competitors in several events,” he said. “I and all of the college community are exceptionally proud of our students and faculty for this notable achievement,” said Suffolk County Community College President Shaun L. McKay.

They collected (and counted) 1,873 plastic bags, which will now be recycled and not wind up in a landfill or as litter. Club members are passionate about

preserving our environment and want to act as caregivers of our planet. “Through recycling, these bags will have a chance to be made into something new,” said club advisor Debra Lindquist. “The club continues to implement activities that adhere to the positive values that make the world a better place for themselves and the community.”

New director of HR at Jefferson’s Ferry Michele A. Berti recently joined Jefferson’s Ferry Lifecare Retirement Community as director of human resources. Jefferson’s Ferry President and CEO Bob Caulfield announced her appointment. “Michele’s considerable management experience in human resources in a variety of settings, from not-for-profits to retail and other businesses, will be invaluable to our organization,” Caulfield said. “Recruiting and retaining workers of the highest caliber is especially important to us, as caring, friendly and exceptional service to our residents is a top priority.” In her new position, Berti will be overseeing all aspects of human resources for Jefferson’s Ferry, including recruitment, training, employee development, benefits and compensation. Most recently, Berti was the assistant director of human resources for United Cerebral Palsy-Suffolk County where she successfully met the needs of diverse employee groups while insuring that the staffing needs of a 24/7 operation were met. Smithtown Elementary School took part in a special event earlier this week to coincide with American Heart Month in February. Spearheaded by the school’s PTA and site-based committee, the “Share the Love: The Smile Stones Project” gave each student in the school the opportunity to paint a stone with their own heart-healthy theme.

Submission information: Email items to people@tbrnewspapers.com

The idea was to encourage students to find different ways to use their hearts, whether through love and laughter or exercise and healthy lifestyle choices. The stones will be donated to local organizations, such as fire departments, police departments, local veterans’ organizations and local hospitals, as a thank you for their service and commitment to the community.

and celebrates the coming year’s event. All the hard work, he said, was a testament to how special Kings Park was to those who lived there. “There’s something about Kings Park that one just can’t leave,” he said. “My wife and I were drawn to it for the small town feeling we got. Everybody helps each other out.” And that’s why this year, Denis and Johnston said, Creighton was selected — because of his work with the parade committee since its founding in 2011 as well as his service to the town, having served on the Town Board from his 2007 election through 2015. “He’s a great guy and he’s always been there for me,” Denis said of Creighton. “He’s always been there for the committee. I believe he deserves it.” As for Creighton, the honor was not taken lightly. In an interview, Creighton told The Times of Smithtown that he was proud of being Irish and just as proud to be a Smithtown resident. “It’s a genuine honor for me,” he said. “Kings Park is a very Irish town and I’m very much into my Irish heritage.” Creighton moved to Kings Park in 1958 after serving in the United States Navy for three years, where he started a family and became active in his com-

media

munity. He has since held various jobs across the Island, including those at the United States Post Office in Kings Park, where he worked until he was appointed to the newly formed Suffolk County Police Department in 1961. He worked a successful 20 years with the department across several different titles, including Suffolk County police commissioner and chief investigator for the Suffolk County district attorney’s office. Creighton’s wife Geraldine was honored as the parade’s grand marshal two years ago, which the former councilman said was also an immense honor. And because of the parade’s consistent collaboration and support, Creighton said he planned on paying his role as grand marshal the utmost respect. “I’m going to really do it up,” Creighton joked. “I’m doing the tie and tails, the top hat, you name it. I’m going to enjoy every bit of it.” Unlike other longer parades, Creighton said Kings Park kept it short and sweet, but full of both quality and quantity. With less than one mile of parade route to walk, he said, bands and organizations from far and wide have enjoyed traveling out to Kings Park to participate. “The bands want to come back,” he said. “They ask us to invite them back because this town is a great town. It’s a nice reflection of greater Smithtown and the Irish heritage here.”

Clockwise from left, Frank Romeo coaches a previous Comsewogue boys’ basketball team; Tom Combs, Chuck Downey and Rich Cimini are 2016 inductees; Richie LoNigro is one of six to receive the Rawlings Silver Glove Award; and Jill Byers competes for Notre Dame University.

Smithtown, Commack stars are in 2016 Hall of Fame class By ALex PeTRoSki

The Suffolk County Sports Hall of Fame announced on Feb. 17 that it will be inducting eight new members in 2016. The class includes Setauket resident Rich Cimini, the New York Jets beat reporter for ESPN; Commack resident Chuck Downey, the first Stony Brook University athlete to sign a professional sports contract; and Setauket resident Tom Combs, the athletic director at Patchogue-Medford High School and a standout football star for Smithtown, among others.

Television and radio host David Weiss introduced the inductees at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Hauppauge during the press conference. “It’s an honor to be associated with such great inductees, great athletes and coaches,” Cimini said during the press conference after he was introduced. “I’m just a guy who got cut from his varsity baseball team by Bill Batewell. At least he’s a [Suffolk] hall of famer, so I can say that I got cut by a hall of fame coach.” Cimini graduated from Sachem High School in 1981. He has covered the Jets for Newsday, the Daily News and now ESPN during his long career as a reporter. “It has been such a great ride that I have a fear that I’m going to wake up one day and realize it’s just been a dream, and that I actually have to go out and get a real job,” Cimini said. Downey, who is currently a battalion chief for the FDNY, credited his parents for instilling values of hard work that led him to be successful in life. His father Raymond, who was also an FDNY firefighter, was killed in the line of duty on September 11, 2001. “Suffolk is very special, and to be here today with these other inductees — thank you very much,” Downey said during the press conference. He was a three-sport athlete at Deer Park High School, before playing football at Stony Brook University, and ultimately signing an NFL contract with the Philadelphia Eagles in 1988. Combs has played, coached and been an athletic director in Suffolk County dating back to the 1970s. He is also a member of the hall’s board of trustees. “This is quite a talented class,” Combs

said. “I’ve been involved with the hall of fame for the last five years and I can honestly say this is a very intimidating group with some amazing accomplishments.” The other inductees are Jill Byers, a three-sport standout from Northport who went on to become a four-time AllAmerican in lacrosse; Frank Romeo, a longtime boys’ basketball coach at Comsewogue High School who was inducted into the New York State Basketball Hall of Fame last year; and Laura Gentile, Maria Michta-Coffey and Isaac Ramaswamy, all

of whom went to Sachem. Richie LoNigro, owner of Port Jefferson Sporting Goods, will also receive a special recognition award for his dedication to the athletes of Suffolk County. He is one of only six people in the country to receive the Rawlings Silver Glove Award, which has been given to some of the most respected people in the sporting goods industry. The ceremony for the 2016 inductees will take place on May 6, also at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Hauppauge.

Kings Park St. Patrick’s Day Parade

2016 Grand Marshal Bob Creighton

B

ob Creighton makes it easy for visitors to find his house, especially in the month of March. “Look for the flagpole with the American and Irish flags.” The two flags are quite revealing about the Grand Marshal for the 2015 Kings Park St. Patrick’s Day Parade. He has proudly served the American people, and he is proud of his Irish heritage. Yet, when one enters the Creighton home, a visitor truly understands another facet of Bob, as generations of family photographs adorn the house. It is obvious that Bob places his family above all else. Robert J. Creighton was born in Washington Heights, in the Inwood Section of New York City, one of seven children born to Elizabeth (Spellman), from Ballyhaunis, County Mayo, Ireland, and Edward (Creighton), from the West Side of Manhattan, whose roots are found in County Louth, Ireland. After his graduation from the LaSalle Academy, in Manhattan, Bob served for three years in the United States Navy, honorably discharged in 1958. The year would be most memorable, as Bob settled in Kings Park, where he met his future wife, Geraldine Donnelly, on a blind date. They married the following year,

in St. Joseph’s Church, and have lived in Kings Park ever since. Bob enjoys spending his time with his five children and nine grandchildren. His son Bob and his wife, Cathy Mallarkey Creighton, live in Smithtown, with their three sons: Robert, John and Thomas. His daughter Denise resides in Kings Park, with her son living in Astoria. His daughter Deirdre and her husband, Kevin Slatterly, live in Smithtown, with their three sons: Kevin, Ryan and Patrick. His daughter Erin lives and works in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. His daughter Kerry lives in Parsippany, New Jersey, with her children Marc and Deirdre. According to Denise Creighton, “Bob loves nothing more than getting all the family together in Kings Park!” Bob Creighton enjoys working. His impressive career began at the United States Post Office, in Kings Park, where he worked until he was appointed to the newly-formed Suffolk County Police Department. Bob entered its first class, in 1961. During a seven year span, he would earn degrees from SUNY @ Farmingdale, City University of New York, SUNY @ Stony Brook, and the FBI Academy. After twenty years with the Suffolk

County Police Department, Bob held a number of jobs: including Suffolk County Police Commissioner and Chief Investigator for the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office. In addition, he has been an Adjunct Professor for 22 years, and was elected Bob Creighton Smithtown Town Councilman, Grand Marshal in 2007. Throughout his career, his Irish ancestry and pride in Kings Park have remained important. Bob’s service to the community is evident in many ways. He is a Trustee for St. Joseph’s Parish; Member to Knights of Columbus, and Member of the Ancient Order of Hibernians. In 2013, Bob was selected as an Aide to the Grand Marshall for the New York City St. Patrick’s Day Parade. Members of the AOH/LAOH will never forget seeing his smiling face, as Bob proudly waved to the marchers, despite the swirling snowfall. The Kings Park St. Patrick’s Day Parade Committee is proud to honor Bob Creighton: American, Irishman, Kings Parker, and Family Man.

OPINION ediToriAL

Help is just a phone call away

Stock photo

Answer the call To The ediTor: everyone has moments when the support and understanding of others seem hard to find, and it is for such moments that reSPoNSe of Suffolk County inc. was born. reSPoNSe of Suffolk County is a nationally accredited, non-profit agency that provides a confidential and anonymous hotline for anyone who needs to talk. reSPoNSe is seeking volunteer crisis counselors and will offer a free training program to those interested in becoming the caring voice on the other end of the line. Part one of the training program will be held on Saturday, April 2 and Sunday, April 3, and continues on Saturday, April 9 and Sunday, April 10. Sessions will run

from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day and trainees must attend all four sessions. Training will take place in the Stony Brook area. No experience is necessary, only a sincere willingness to learn and grow, and the ability to make a six-month commitment of four hours a week is required. response provides two types of telephone assistance lines and both are heavily dependent on volunteer talent. The crisis intervention hotline takes over 20,000 calls each year about a wide range of subjects – substance abuse, domestic violence, depression, family conflict, grief and suicidal thoughts, among many others. The support line provides over 5,000 telephone “visits” yearly to individuals who are homebound or have limited social support due

to a physical disability or mental illness. Training for both the hotline and support line counselors includes lecture, role-playing exercises, and private and group supervision. College credit is available and bilingual volunteers are especially needed. Make a difference in our community – one phone call at a time. Volunteer as a telephone counselor with reSPoNSe of Suffolk County and become the caring voice on the other end of the phone! Those interested in attending the upcoming training can visit www. responsehotline.org for more information or call the hotline at (631) 751-7500. Please apply early, positions are limited.

A new 24-hour hotline will soon be available to Long islanders battling addiction, bringing new hope to families struggling to overcome drug-related issues. Suffolk County officials recently announced their hotline, which the Long island Council on Alcoholism and drug dependence will run in order to direct callers to different resources in the area based upon their needs. it could launch by April. While addiction is a growing issue that lawmakers have struggled to address, this hotline will become a new tool to combat it. We can see it assisting many people who previously would not have known where to turn. it could be particularly helpful because it will provide an easy route for a population that is often so isolated that they have trouble digging themselves out of the hole of addiction. Some have been pushed away by their families, or have only old friends who reinforce bad habits. But the hotline will be there in their moment of clarity, no matter the hour, to steer them toward the support they need. Until the hotline launches a few weeks from now, there are other places to call for help: • LICADD: 631-979-1700 • Response of Suffolk County 24-hour hotline: 631-751-7500 • North Shore Youth Council drug/alcohol hotline: 631-481-4000 • Hope House Ministries: 631-978-0188 • Phoenix House’s Edward D. Miller substance abuse treatment center: 844-447-0310 • Samaritan Village’s Suffolk Outpatient Treatment Program: 631-351-7112 • St. Charles Hospital rehab program: 631-474-6233

Messages for sporting kids

D. None of the above by DaNiel DuNaief

news@tbrnewspapers.com

I

can relate to Charlie Brown’s teacher. She speaks — and Charlie and his pals in the “Peanuts” cartoon hear noise without words. As a coach of numerous teams, I have seen that blank look, recognized the glare and the stare and wondered if anyone would notice if I switched to a discussion of lollipops

and subatomic particles. I am near the end of a basketball season. As we were winning a recent game by 20 points, one of the boys on the bench confided that he wished the game was more competitive. In our next game, he got his wish. In a physical contest, the officiating seemed unbalanced. How, several parents articulated with increasing volume as the first half drew to a close, did we get so few foul calls when we could see the red marks on our children’s arms and necks from contact with the opposing players? With concerns about calls, parents and the kids became increasingly vocal. During my halftime talk, I could see the hurt and anger in the kids’ eyes. “How come he can keep pushing me and he doesn’t get called for a foul, and I go near him and the ref blows the whistle?” one of them asked. Officiating isn’t easy. I was an umpire for baseball games

in which every full-count pitch was a borderline strike. It was up to me to decide whether the boy struck out or to send him to first base. Still, in that moment, as the coach of those boys on the basketball court, I was frustrated. I did what I imagine chairmen do: I sent my assistant coach to ask the referees about the calls. It was cowardly, but I wanted to stay on the court and try to manage through this tense contest. I could be the good guy and he could be the one whining. I told the boys to play hard, stay focused and stick together. An eight-point deficit, I insisted, was manageable, especially with an entire half left in the game. But then something happened early in the second half. As the game got close, one of the boys from the other team got fouled on a 3-point shot. He stepped to the line in a quiet gym. Just as he was

getting ready to shoot, one of the parents on my team barked at him, making him alter his shot and causing him to miss. The referee threw out the parent and the boy made the next two free throws. While I didn’t agree with many of the foul calls, I understood the need to eject the parent. With the game close the rest of the way, parents, coaches and players became increasingly animated, sharing the kinds of noises you’d hear at a Red Sox-Yankees game. What’s the right message to offer the kids at the end of a tense game? I got my answer a few days later, when I interviewed Port Jefferson Station’s Annie O’Shea, who has had a breakout year in the World Cup in skeleton racing. Driven by teamwork and an ability to prevent any adversity from turning into negative internal dialogue, O’Shea found

Work together and stay focused, says skeleton racing World Cup star, Annie O’Shea. the kind of consistent success she’d always sought. She won gold and silver medals in races against the top international sliders and finished fourth for the entire season in the World Cup. She said she stays focused on each turn, without worrying about the clock, what someone said or anything else that might slow her down. It all started with a positive attitude. That kind of attitude doesn’t come from barking or from screaming about calls from officials. It comes from working together and staying focused. So, did we win? Does it matter?

Time to restore those New Year’s resolutions

between you and me by leah S. DuNaief

news@tbrnewspapers.com

T

his is the critical time, the time when those who cannot hold on any longer have fallen off their New Year’s resolutions track.

That’s most of us. The best of intentions, articulated amid holiday cheers, have a way of trailing off in the cold light of January and February. If you are among those committed few who are going strong and plowing ahead, congratulations. If, however, you are like the rest of us, weak but still wishful, I have some thoughts on the subject of resolutions. Statistics tell us that by Valentine’s Day, 80 percent of people who would like to improve their lives have given up. What we are not told is how many start again. Really, it not necessary for resolutions only to be made beneath mistletoe. If we peter out, we can pick ourselves up and begin anew. The

pressure is off. And here are some tricks to sticking with it this time. Don’t make unrealistic resolutions that are overwhelming. Want to lose 30 pounds? Losing weight is a common idea, but it is hard to break eating habits and it is a slow process. However, breaking the 30 pounds into smaller goals, like 1 pound a week, is doable. And a small success encourages endurance. Try to find a buddy to lose weight with, even going to the gym together. Whatever your goal is, it’s easier with support from someone else and it surely is more fun. It’s harder to go it alone. Some people might prefer to keep their resolutions private,

in which case the buddy idea doesn’t work. There are some good reasons for privacy. Making public commitments can create too much pressure. Or maybe you don’t want others to know how bad things really are and how much you need improving — if it isn’t already obvious. And then there are those who try to sabotage you, for whatever reason. It’s not pretty, but such urges exist in humans. Perhaps out of competitive motives or fear, you will be a different person and your adversaries won’t be worthy of you. Attempt to make resolutions fun. Fix on what you will do or how you will feel once your goal is realized. The drudgery of getting there is taking you

If you are among those committed few who are going strong and plowing ahead, congratulations. ever closer to your ideal. Making resolutions is a little like making a to-do list. Try to limit the number to the two most important items at most. Otherwise life gets too confusing and energy is dissipated in different directions. Finally, if you give up, start again. I have. When resolutions become habits, they will carry us to our goal. And habits are much easier to practice than that heavy, multisyllabic word, “resolutions.”
