New school year brings changes to district The Middle Country Central School District announced several new programs to engage the students throughout the Centereach and Selden communities for the 2016-17 school year. The new programs — including specialized music, art and math curriculum for kindergarten students, as well as extra physics classes and the introduction of a Capstone Project — are made possible by the district’s strategic budgeting practices and financial planning. The academic improvements are meant to prepare students for life at the next level.

“At Middle Country, we are dedicated to educating ‘the whole child,’” Superintendent Roberta Gerold said. “We are proud of the many programs we have put in place this year that will help provide students with the resources to excel in the classroom and in the community. These brand new classroom offerings will challenge our students to think critically and prepare them for successful futures beyond the classroom.” During the first day of school, students throughout the district took advantage of the many new opportunities provided. Kinder-

garten students from Unity Drive Pre-K/Kindergarten Center participated in the new art and music classes, as well as their math literacy program. These initiatives are intended to introduce students to essential Science Technology Engineering and Math concepts. Other students are also experiencing the excitement of new programs. Fifth-grade students throughout the district embarked on a newly introduced Capstone Project. The Capstone Project is a two-semester independent research assignment that spans fifth through 12th grade. Designated time for research is granted to seventh- and eighth-grade students, and the eighth-graders will now be able to participate in physics classes. Outside of the classroom, other exciting news is underway, such as completed projects from the district’s 2015 Bond Referendum. At the beginning of the school year, students and staff benefitted from the completion of roof replacements, security vestibules, high school track resurfacing, the installation of Smart Boards in the classrooms and new buses and two-student vans. Changes to Common Core met with mixed reviews By Victoria Espinoza victoria@tbrnewspapers.com The New York State Education Department wants teachers and parents to weigh in on changes to Common Core State Standards, and voices are already criticizing the proposals. The department released a draft of new learning standards for public comment at the end of last month, which included recommendations to change 60 percent of the English language arts standards and 55 percent of the math standards for New York state. The recommendations came from two committees comprised of more than 130 parents and teachers and included creating a new early learning task force and a glossary of math verbs and English terms. Middle Country Central School District Superintendent Roberta A. Gerold said teachers in the district will be reviewing the changes and submitting their commentary made throughout the month of October. “I think that it’s good that state education is asking for teacher’s perspectives and comments on whether or not the revisions are appropriate,” Gerold said. “It says to me that they’re not finished with their revisions, because there are still adjustments that need to be made. Some of them were simple language changes, but I think there’s still more solid work that needs to be done.” The NYS Allies for Public Education applauded the committee’s efforts, but said the state education department the results are not substantive content changes. “The result of their efforts is essentially just a rebranding of the Common Core,” the group said in a statement.

These are more revised phrasing and language. They’re attached at the hip to the original standards.” He also said the department should have looked at the use of standards themselves. “It was not meant to do anything but review the current standards,” Rella said. “They never got into the bigger picture, which is the appropriateness of the standards.” The

superintendent said he is not anticipating anything different this school year because of the proposed modifications. NYS Education Department Commissioner MaryEllen Elia said committee members spent a year listening to public comment before drafting new standards. “Dedicated teachers, parents and educators from across the state put in countless hours to develop these new draft standards,” Elia said in a statement. “Teachers will be able to use these standards as a basis for developing their curricula and lesson plans to meet the needs of students in their classrooms.

These changes reflect what I have heard from parents, teachers and administrators over the past year in my travels across the state.” For the ELA changes, five subcommittee groups based on grade levels reviewed the original standards to see if they met the criteria for what a student should know and be able to perform at their grade level, and recommended new areas to improve standards. Specific changes include more focus on students in prekindergarten to second grade, with an early learning task force that discusses issues for younger learners, teaching from a wider variety of texts, and developing clear communication with parents so they understand the curriculum and assignments their children are given. Math changes include creating a glossary of verbs associated with mathematics, maintaining the rigor of standards so students are aware of what is expected of them at every grade level and providing more time for students to understand mathematics content. Gerold also said the reactions from the public are an important part of the process. “I know that there’s some debate going around the state whether the changes were deep enough or developmentally appropriate,” she said. “I think all of that information will be more valid once the feedback is received from all of the stakeholders.” To review the new English standards in more detail visit www.nysed.gov/draftstandards-english-language-arts, and for math standards see www.nysed.gov/draftstandards-mathematics. Brookhaven town supervisor Ed romaine wants to maintain the town’s aaa credit rating, and the 2017 tentative operating budget reflects that. One area that saw an increase in funds for 2017 was snow removal, which now stands at just under $6 million. “If we do have a year of little snow, we hope to be able to move some of that budget over to highway maintenance [budget] lines to increase the spending there if we don’t need the snow budget,” Wright said.

The town was able save money by eliminating 13 full-time positions, which were left vacant primarily by retirements and resignations during the course of the year, according to Wright. The town board will hold a public hearing and vote to approve the tentative 2017 budget Nov. 10 at 5 p.m.

A 51-year-old man from Huntington was driving a 1996 Jeep on Canal Road near the intersection of Nesconset Highway in Port Jefferson Station Oct. 4 when he was pulled over, police said. He was found to be driving with as suspended license. He was arrested and charged with seconddegree aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle.

At Holliday Inn Express Hotel on Nesconset Highway in Centereach Oct. 3, a 34-year-old man from Centereach stole a wallet with cash and credit cards, according to police. He was arrested Oct. 6 and charged with fourth-degree grand larceny.

On Oct. 7 at about 6:30 p.m., a 19-yearold man from Medford hit a mailbox in front of a house on Hofstra Drive in Farmingville while driving a 2000 Volkswagen and fled the scene, police said. He was also driving while intoxicated, according to police. He was arrested and charged with leaving the scene of an accident with property damage and driving while intoxicated.

At about 2 p.m. Oct. 2, someone stole a Visa credit card from a home on Sunset Avenue in Selden and made a purchase with it, according to police.

A 28-year-old woman from Patchogue knowingly used a stolen credit card three times on Sept. 11 at three different locations, according to police. She also attempted to steal a 2010 Infiniti from a parking lot on North Ocean Avenue in Holtsville on the same day, police said. She was arrested Oct. 6 in Selden and charged with third-degree grand larceny and three counts of fourth-degree criminal possession of stolen property.

Governor approves standards for lead levels in schools By ReBecca anzel Drinking water in public schools across the state will soon conclude testing for lead contamination. Legislation signed by Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D) in September makes New York the first state to mandate such testing. The law established a level of lead allowed in drinking water, initial and future testing requirements for schools and deadlines for notifying parents and staff of results. “These rigorous new protections for New York’s children include the toughest lead contamination testing standards in the nation and provide clear guidance to schools on when and how they should test their water,” Cuomo said in a press release. Schools are more likely to have raised lead levels because intermittent use of water causes extended water contact with plumbing fixtures. Those installed before 1986, when federal laws were passed to restrict the amount of lead allowed in materials, might have a higher amount of lead. “We know how harmful lead can be to the health and well-being of young children, and that’s why the Senate insisted on testing school water for lead,” state Senate Majority Leader John Flanagan (R-East Northport) said in a statement. “As a result, New York becomes the first state in the nation to perform this testing and protect millions of its students from potential health risks.” Lead consumption by children is especially harmful because behavioral and physical effects, such as brain damage and reduced IQ, happen at lower levels of exposure, according to the federal Environmental Protection Agency. Even low levels of lead exposure can cause hearing loss, nervous system damage and learning disabilities. In adults, lead can cause damage to the reproductive system, kidneys and cardiovascular system. The new law required schools teaching children in prekindergarten through fifth grade to test drinking water by Sept. 30 and schools with children from grades six through

Councilwoman Jane Bonner (C-Rocky Point) and Councilman Dan Panico (RManorville) joined volunteers and shoppers at the Davis Town Meeting House Society’s 4th annual yard sale and craft fair. The Davis Town Meeting House is located on Middle Country Road in Coram. The Davis Town Meeting House Society Inc. was formed exclusively for the charitable purpose of restoring and championing the conservancy efforts for the historic Lester H. Davis House. The house is listed on the National Registry of Historic Places and is designated a Brookhaven Town Landmark. Bonner worked with the Parks Department to restore the house, seeking funding from numerous sources and ensuring that capital funds were available. Her support of the project led to the restoration, including roof replacement; exterior restoration; masonry work; engineering services associated with the completion of the interior structural timber restoration; reconstruction of a new timber framed front porch; and completion of the exterior facade.

Newfield senior named Long Island scholar artist Middle Country Central School District’s Newfield High School senior Tyler Berns was recently named a Merit Scholar Artist by the Long Island Arts Alliance. After an extensive evaluation process — including a video portfolio and New York State School Music Association All-State performances — Berns was recognized for his percussion skills on snare drum, mallets, multiple percussion and timpani. He was one of three music students recognized in Suffolk County for excelling as both a scholar and musician. He was honored at an awards ceremony at Half Hollow Hills High School East in Dix Hills, and will participate in an end-of-the-year reception at the Tilles Center for the Performing Arts in June.

Dianne Tasman, 50, of Selden, died Sept. 14. Born June 22, 1966 in Glen Cove, she was the daughter of Joseph and Lorraine Gresalfi. Known as “DiDi,” Tasman worked in Human Resources at Stony Brook University Hospital, loved to cook and take cruises. Left to cherish her memory are her husband Andrew; daughter Allison; son Nicholas; sisters, Laura, Denise and Michele;

Contributions made to Good Shepherd Hospice in Port Jefferson in memory of Dianne Tasman would be appreciated.

As overdoses become more and more common across Long Island, it’s become very clear that drugs don’t know who you are, and addiction can latch itself onto anybody — a fact that more and more people are becoming aware of. “Debbie’s son’s death was my first eye-opening experience to heroin,” said Kelly Amantea, Carpinone’s friend. “It never touched my life, my family, or my heart prior to that. It just never affected me. I knew nothing about it. I lived in my own little drug-free bubble.” She said for her, a lot of awareness came out of the tragic event. “I do find that the community as a whole is starting to wrap its arms around this,” she said. “I’m hoping that there’s more attention paid to this because it’s affecting more and more families — more and more lives — and I want the cure and the remedy to catch up with the epidemic ... they’re so far apart right now.” Amantea added she’d never been to a funeral like Forte’s before and believes every middle school kid should be dragged to a funeral of someone who died this way, to open children’s eyes to the harsh reality. “It rocked me to my core and I don’t think

these kids really understand what it’s like for the families that have to carry this,” she said. “That drug is Russian roulette. Debbie is channeling her grief in such a positive way, and I just find everything she’s doing to be so good for her body, mind and soul. Her situation touched my heart.” The fundraiser raised $220 for Hope House Ministries and $1,500 for the scholarship.

With a 2-1 win over West Islip Oct. 7, the 9-1-1 Newfield boys’ soccer team is one step closer to being named League III champions. The route to that ultimate goal will continue to challenge the Wolverines, with teams like West Islip fighting for postseason life, and others, like No. 1 Smithtown West (10-1), challenging them for the Newfield 2 top spot. “We told them West Islip 1 that against a lot of teams that are fighting for their playoff lives, it’s going to get chippy,” Newfield head coach Jamie Santiago said. “But they need to maintain composure, because a lot of teams are going to get them off their game and push them out of their element.” West Islip did just that in the first half. After scoring the first goal of the game, tempers flared and pushing and shoving resulted in multiple yellow cards for both teams. Heading into halftime still down a goal, the referees pulled aside captains from both teams to talk about the physicality. “It happens — they talk — it’s a game,

and I told the team to just relax,” senior center back John Alves said. “We’re trying to win the league here, so I told my guys to keep their hands down, get the ball, calm down and to just play our game.” The Wolverines opened up the second half very differently. They finally broke through midfield and into West Islip’s zone. Almost 10 minutes into the second half, senior midfielder Anthony Mauri grabbed a pass, raced around his oppo-

One-on-one with a defender as he made his way to the box, the sophomore midfielder and center forward won the battle and stuffed the ball into the left corner past a diving goalkeeper to even the score. “I thought the defender was going to come in at me, so I took a touch forward and got past him,” Celanti said. “Then, it was just me and the goalie, and I tapped it into the corner and felt a rush of excitement. This was an important win.” Celanti had plenty of other opportunities in the game, which impressed his coach. “Raphael Celanti had a great game,” Santiago said. “He scored, and he missed a couple of headers, but he was just all over the field creating a lot of opportunities. I thought our center midfielders also played a great second half.” Winning the 50/50 balls was a key to the team’s second-half success. “When you go down you think you’re going to keep getting scored on, but our team, we get back up — our hearts are always in the game,” Alves said. “So we kept possession — winning the first and second ball — we’re not scared of going

It’s all about going hard and having heart.” With 14 minutes left, senior forward Michael DiDominico headed in the game-winner. “We gave up a bad goal early — we got punished for being slow out of the gate — but as the game went on, we built momentum and finally started playing the way we’re capable of, and we turned the tide our way,” Santiago said. “That’s what good teams do. They find a way to win even when they’re not playing their best game.” He’s hoping his team can do the same thing against Smithtown West Oct. 14. Newfield faced off against the Bulls Sept. 17 and came out on top 2-0, handing the team its only loss of the season. “It’s a really, really big game,” Santiago said. “Hopefully they can pull out a big win. We have good senior leadership with a great core of young kids — we start five sophomores out of the 11 — and it’s just a good mix. This is one of the best teams I’ve had in my 12 years being a coach. They’re going to fight to the end.”

Donald Trump has received a lot of backlash for private comments he made in 2005 regarding his boastful treatment of women.

The right to be offended As an editorial staff, we have an opinion. … The first half of that sentence isn’t necessary in order to reveal what we think. And that is the exact problem we have had with this past weekend’s news cycle. Political leader after political leader came out this past Friday, Saturday and Sunday to condemn Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump’s leaked comments, bragging about being able to commit sexual assault against women. One of the common themes from legislators who pulled their endorsements was “As a father of daughters” or “As a brother with sisters — or a mother,” they were offended. Two problems here: You don’t need to be a “someone” in order to be offended, you can simply be offended. And why is it that women are repeatedly being referred to as a sister, a daughter or a mother? A presidential candidate talked about how he can sexually assault women because he is a star. A woman doesn’t need to be anything to be offended, threatened or violated by that sentiment. A man is also not disqualified from finding Trump’s comments reprehensible simply because he is a man. Women don’t need to give birth or have a brother before they can be victimized by Trump’s words. Men don’t need to be married to condemn sexual assault. It should not matter your role, your background or your stature — no one should need to back up or justify why they are against sexual assault. They just should be.

Pretty sure — both sides can agree that Trump’s son isn’t the only 10-year-old computer wiz. Presuming — we are also in agreement that nobody is shocked any more as to what our children have access to on the internet. Whether you have or have not discussed politics with your children, even leaving out “ the gory parts,” they have found all they need to see and hear online about the candidates. Which leads me to wonder … what are the reasons parents are giving their children as to why they are voting for Trump? Take away all the political mumbo-jumbo that children, and some teens, may not comprehend, and you are left with the news that children are really interested in: the shock and awe, the yelling, the threatening, the making fun of, the what-is-hegoing-to do next? The promise of

a dramatic change. The macho, Rambo rhetoric. Children see and hear him, weekly, calling women pigs and rating them on a scale of 1 to 10; calling minorities rapists and terrorists; demeaning other minorities by stating that they live in “hell holes” and keep “shooting each other.” They hear Trump putting the almighty fear into Trump believers — and then your children witness the believers at their rallies, spewing their nonsense. So I am wondering a few things. When your daughter’s boyfriend calls her a pig or claims she’s not a 10 because her breasts aren’t big enough — does your parental vote for Trump say that’s acceptable behavior? Your daughter may think it does. She knows you heard Trump say it, and you support him. When your son gets hit with a lawsuit due to not paying his fair share of taxes or for sexual miscon-

duct — does your parental vote for Trump make that “part of business?” Your son may think it does. He knows Trump got away with both, and you support Trump. When your child bullies a person of a different religion they aren’t comfortable with, or with disabilities — does your parental Trump vote make that okay too? They will think so; they saw your candidate do it and say it. Again, with your support. When your daughter’s boss states that she will never make as much money as your son, does your parental Trump vote tell her to just live with it? She may think so, because Trump thinks so, and you support him. One more question: Is this really the “dramatic change” you want for your children?

Independence party picking Zeldin should raise questions In case you have not seen, the Independence Party — one of the few political third parties that has any significance — has given Congressman Lee Zeldin its ballot line, and thus their support. If that means nothing to you, consider this: Zeldin’s opponent, Anna Throne-Holst, used to be a member of the Independence Party. Adding insult to injury is the fact that the Independence Party

had previously endorsed Dave Calone, who ran against ThroneHolst in the Democratic Primary. So essentially, the Independence Party, who had previously endorsed a Democrat, would rather go to the other side of the aisle and endorse a Republican than support a candidate who used to be a member of their own party. I fail to see a greater condem-

nation of Throne-Holst’s work as an elected official than the party she had been a member of for years giving her opponent their ballot line; it really calls into question her competence. If Throne-Holst’s own party has no confidence in her, why would the average voter?

OpiniOn Turning to past presidents for words of wisdom

here can we turn when the dialogue from, or about, our presidents seems to fall short? Fortunately, we can look to the imperfect presidents of the past, whose ideas and inspiration have, for years, proved much more than “just words,” and whose notions about who — and what — we can or should be has helped provide a compass for the country. James Garfield might be a good place to start: “We can not overestimate the fervent love of By Daniel Dunaief liberty, the intelligent courage and the sum of common sense with which our fathers made the great experiment of selfgovernment.”

If we falter and lose our freedoms, it will be because we destroyed ourselves.” Here’s another Lincoln quote: “Better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to speak out and remove all doubt.” Turning to the other side of the Civil

War conflict that threatened to tear the nation apart, Robert E. Lee, the Confederate general, said, “I tremble for my country when I hear of confidence expressed in me. I know too well my weakness, that our only hope is in God.” John Quincy Adams’ inspirational suggestion was, “Try and fail, but don’t fail to try.” Chester A. Arthur said, “Men may die, but the fabrics of our free institutions remain unshaken.” Harry S. Truman indicated, “No government is perfect. One of the chief virtues of a democracy, however, is that its defects are always visible and under democratic processes can be pointed out and corrected.” Dwight D. Eisenhower said, “If you want total security, go to prison. There you’re fed, clothed, given medical care and so on. The only thing lacking … is freedom.” Describing a country whose ancestors came from so many other nations, Franklin D. Roosevelt said, “Remember, remember always, that all of us,

Kennedy, who saw his fair share of crises during a presidency cut short, said, “The Chinese use two brush strokes to write the word ‘crisis.’ One brush stroke stands for danger; the other for opportunity. In a crisis, be aware of the danger — but recognize the opportunity.” John Tyler offered these amusing and humbling words: “Here lies the body of my good horse, The General. For 20 years he bore me around the circuit of my practice, and in all that time he never made a blunder. Would that his master could say the same.” William Howard Taft pointedly said, “Politics, when I am in it, makes me sick.” An Eisenhower quote might be a fitting way to end: “America is best described by one word, freedom.”

Britain’s Baroness Jay brings warning of threat to democracy

baroness and former leader of the British House of Lords, Margaret Jay, came to Stony Brook University to speak to us about “The new populism in America and Britain: What has happened to our politics?” The talk, which was open to the public and well attended, drew parallels between Trumpism and the Brexit movement in Britain and served as one way to understand our preBy Leah S. Dunaief election frenzy. Populism, as a political ideology, views virtuous citizens as mistreated by small circles of elites to be overthrown. In Britain, where jobs are drying up and wages have been stagnant for those 31-59 years of age for decades, migrants have been pouring into the country — some 330,000 in the last year, looking for jobs and a good life.

Between you and me

Citizens are angry. The landscape has changed and a common cry is, “I don’t recognize the town I grew up in,” as a result of the changes. As a member of the European Union, Britain had open borders for laborers throughout the 28-member countries even as British workers could in turn move anywhere within the EU from Britain. Baroness Jay of Paddington, daughter of former Prime Minister James Callaghan, told us that there are four times as many Brits collecting unemployment insurance in Germany as there are Germans collecting unemployment in Britain. Nonetheless, the “elites” and the politicians are seen by the British middle class as being unresponsive and only self-serving, and there is a deep sense of insecurity in the country. In such an environment, the message, “Support Brexit to take back control,” resonates and sounds not dissimilar to “Make America great again.” These slogans would seem to pit the common people against the top 1 percent. Leaders of populist movements have certain characteristics in common, as the baroness pointed out. They tend to be blunt to the point

of crude. The media loves them for their irresistible sound bites and the attention they draw from the public, and offers them a platform. Interestingly in this comparison of Britain and the United States, those who would speak “for the people” are not actually “of the people.” They feel none of the economic insecurities but seek to identify with the millions of citizens. That is certainly the case with “billionaire” Trump and also the leaders of the Brexit campaign, who are from the upper classes. Populism is spreading in Europe. Will it spread here? That is the question Margaret Jay poses for us. For the United Kingdom, there are other serious issues. Will the four parts of the country stay together? Scotland and Northern Ireland resoundingly voted to stay in the EU, while Wales and England voted to leave. Also there is what the baroness described as an “unpleasant divide” between foreign workers, who are increasingly viewed as taking away jobs, benefits and even lifestyle, and the citizens. The Brexit vote seems to have given legitimacy to the antagonisms. Then there are the matters of

making separate trade agreements with 27 other countries, and the pound sterling exchange rate. Meanwhile what has Brexit done to the rest of the EU? Other countries, with similar movements, are stirring. There is even the thought that the Brexit vote may have caused matters to improve elsewhere, as politicians heed the message sent by the voters. The solution, proposed by Baroness Jay, lies in rebuilding the center. We must not become fortresses of isolation, she warns, either in trade or of xenophobia. Pluralism and diversity are the way of the future, and in the U.S. these ideas are baked into our democracy. To rebuild the center involves a role for education. Tellingly some 75 percent of the more educated in Britain voted to stay in the EU, while about the same number, 75 percent of the less educated, voted to leave. The latter are those for whom the present system is not working. And while this picture of current politics, is specific to Britain at the moment, the dark and unpleasant nature of this past Sunday’s presidential debate here would urge us to pay further attention to the people whose needs are not being met.
