The Middle Country school board unanimously adopted a nearly $236 million budget for the 2015-2016 school year on April 22. The proposed budget will now head to a public vote this May. “This is the first time in 10 years that we’re looking at stabilizing the district,” board President Karen Lessler said prior to the vote. “Ten years we’ve been through a reduction of funding by the state of New York.” The president called the budget “solid,” as it keeps current programs intact, no excessing of staff will happen and it includes a continuation of the popular science, technology, engineering, and mathematics — known as STEM — program that has been a hit in the district. The spending plan is also tax cap compliant. At the district’s budget presentation on April 1, Lessler announced the district would

A small Centereach farm, about 11 acres in size, is reaching out to the community to raise the funds necessary to continue doing its good work. The farm has been growing vegetables and other crops to donate to food pantries and people in need since 2007, according to Peter Castorano, one of Bethel Hobbs Community Farm’s caretakers, who lives in the sole house on the property. “Ann started it all,” said Castorano. That Ann is Ann Pellegrino. The Centereach woman discovered the farm, which wasn’t too far from her house, after she sought a place to con-

tinue gardening and donating the crops to the poor. Alfred Hobbs willed the farm to the Bethel AME Church, its owner since 1955. Pellegrino decided to take over the farm’s maintenance, although it is still owned by Bethel Church. She is now the vice president of the farm, which donates tens of thousands of pounds of crops to those in need each year. The farm has recently experienced an invasion by wild deer, which are eating some of the farm’s crops. The deer eating the crops has significantly lowered the overall productivity of the farn. “It costs a lot to maintain the farm,” Pellegrino said. HOBBS continued on page a15

Suffolk County bills to protect veteran valor By Rohma aBBas

A roomful of veterans and lawmakers gathered in Northport on April 20 to salute the signing of two new Suffolk County bills aimed at protecting veterans and the public against acts of stolen valor. County Executive Steve Bellone (D) signed the legislation, which was spearheaded by Legislator William “Doc” Spencer (DCenterport), into law. One of the bills makes it illegal for individuals to fraudulently represent themselves as decorated veterans to members of the public in order to solicit donations or obtain money, property or other benefits. The law makes it a misdemeanor punishable by a fine of up to $1,000 and/or one year in prison. The second law imposes stiffer requirements on veteran nonprofit groups that solicit donations in Suffolk County. Such groups will be required to disseminate financial information to the public about how their fundraising dollars are being spent. The laws were born out of a joint effort of many veterans, Spencer said, namely John Cooney, the commander of the Northport American Legion Post 694 and Tom Kehoe, former Northport Village Board member. Both men held Spencer’s “feet to the fire” to get the legislation drafted, particularly after what Cooney described as instances in Huntington Town in which individuals fraudulently represented themselves as veterans for personal gain. “The needs of our veterans and the desire to give on part of our residents can create vulnerability, as organizations and individuals have sought to take advantage, to profit from these circumstances,” Spencer told an audience of veterans at the Northport American Legion. “The two bills that we sign here today will work in conjunction to ensure our charitable dollars go where they should go — to support our veterans.” A number of local leaders attended the conference, including Northport Village

Police investigate fire and gunshot wound By Elana Glowatz

Police say a man shot himself on Tuesday afternoon and his Coram house was intentionally set on fire. According to the Suffolk County Police Department, a passerby found the man slumped over in his vehicle at Tanglewood Park on Howe Road in Coram and called police to the scene shortly after 5 p.m. Homicide Squad detectives found that the man, 67, had sustained a File photo

self-inflicted gunshot wound. Investigation revealed the victim resided at a house that had been set on fire earlier in the day, police said. Officers had been called to a home on Hartsdale Lane around 3:30 p.m. to what was then an active house fire. The home was not occupied at the time of the incident, police said, and no one was hurt in the blaze. Arson Squad detectives believe the fire was intentional. The respective squads are investigating the two separate incidents.

Pedestrian dies after driver swerves away from dark car By Elana Glowatz

A female pedestrian died this week of injuries she sustained on April 20 when an SUV swerved to avoid a vehicle without its headlights on and hit her instead. According to the Suffolk County Police Department, 28-year-old Justin Vaughan was driving a 1994 Jeep west on Middle Country Road in Coram, west

of Homestead Drive, at about 8:20 p.m. when a car without its headlights turned on crossed the road in front of him. Vaughan swerved to avoid a collision and hit pedestrian Susan Restrepo, 56. Restrepo, a Coram resident, was listed in critical condition at Stony Brook University Hospital after the crash and later died of her injuries, police reported on April 25. Vaughan was not hurt and the

driver of the dark vehicle, which was not involved in the crash, is not known. Police had impounded the Jeep for a safety check. Detectives from the SCPD’s 6th Squad are investigating the incident. Anyone with information about the crash is asked to call the squad at 631854-8652. All calls will remain confidential.

On Sunday, the Selden Fire Department extricated a driver from a car that was unsafe after it crashed off the road. At about 8:55 a.m., the fire department responded to a call of a motor vehicle accident, ac-

cording to a statement from the department. Officials found an older model Dodge Durango off the road at Suffolk County Road 83, at the off-ramp to South Bicycle Path. It was an elaborate operation, due to the position and angle of the vehicle, according to the

department. Firefighters used specialized equipment to secure the Durango before removing the driver. “This incident demonstrates some of the many techniques and tools that our first responders are proficient with,” Selden Fire Chief Michael Matteo Jr.

Authorities say they have arrested a man who allegedly wore women’s clothing as he robbed a Smithtown bank on April Fool’s Day, and also charged him with intentionally driving into a police car while evading arrest. According to the Suffolk County Police Department, 36-year-old Wesley Keene was arrested by officers from the Warrant Enforcement Section. The Coram resident allegedly entered the TD Bank on Nesconset Highway on the afternoon of April 1 and displayed a note saying said in a statement. “Selden firefighters followed all proper procedures and protocols, and successfully handled a potentially unstable vehicle, ensuring that no further harm came to the occupants.”

Transit-oriented development is an L.I. tradition One of the strategies being widely discussed as a means of revitalizing the Long Island economy is the creation of transit-oriented developments, especially in downtowns served by the Long Island Rail Road. These developments are much needed and would serve multiple purposes — increasing housing options, enhancing downtown areas and providing places to live and work with easy access to and from BY Dave Kapell New York City. But they are not new to Long Island. Greenport on the North Fork was a transit-oriented development in the mid-19th century and thus underscores the potential that this long-standing tradition still offers Long Island, if we can focus on mobility. Ironically, when the LIRR’s track to Greenport was laid in 1844, it was not to provide transit access to New York City but to connect New York with Boston, because the technology did not yet exist to bridge Connecticut’s rivers. Greenport was, and still is, the terminus for the LIRR Main Line —aka the Ronkonkoma Branch — but its fundamental role at the time was to provide a transit connection to Boston by ferry. It was a two-way street for people and for commerce. In the mid-19th century the only way to travel by train from New York City to Boston was by taking the LIRR from Brooklyn to Greenport, transferring there to a ferry to cross the Long Island Sound to Connecticut and then resuming train travel to Boston. Greenport, therefore, evolved naturally as a transit-oriented development with a thriving downtown that was created during this period with housing as well as jobs, commerce and robust population growth. That’s still a central appeal for the concept today, and it’s especially timely. New York City is both the financial capital of the world and a powerful magnet for youth and talent. That makes it all the more important that Long Island build upon its proximity to the city by expanding transit access to its dynamic economy and the jobs it offers to Long Island residents and, as importantly, the talent pool it offers to support Long Island businesses. It’s also important to recognize that young people are much less inclined to drive cars than previous generations. But there are two keys to maximizing that access. First, we need to make it easier to live and work near LIRR stations. The good news there is that the Long Island Index and the Regional Plan Association determined in 2010 that a total of 8,300 acres are available for infill development within a half-mile of LIRR stations and downtowns. That means that transit-oriented developments can enhance downtown areas while reducing pressure for development on Long Island’s iconic and treasured rural landscape. Second, we must enhance the LIRR infrastructure to make reverse commuting — from New York City to Long Island — more available. On the 9.8-mile stretch of the LIRR Main Line between Floral Park and Hicksville, we’re still using the same system of two tracks that were laid in

Victor LaBozzetta III, a student at Newfield High School, recently received special recognition as the Long Island Arts Alliance scholar-artist in music for Suffolk County for March. This award program recognizes only the best students on Long Island in both academics and in the arts. LaBozzetta earned this honor with his outstanding skills playing several instruments including the piano, French horn and guitar, and his concentration on drums and percussion. In addition to playing these instruments, LaBozzetta composes music, has written a music instruction book for players of all instruments and has won many music awards.

1844 when the Island population was 50,000. Today, 171 years later, we have the same two tracks and a population of 3 million. Six LIRR branches now converge on this bottleneck, turning it into a one-way street during the peak morning rush, making reverse commuting impossible. At present, we cannot compete successfully with other suburban areas in the metropolitan region where reverse commuting by transit is readily available. The jobs and young people that we want are, therefore, going elsewhere. It defies common sense to think that Long Island can thrive in the 21st century with this critical defect in our transit system left in place. The solution is to expand the current LIRR system of tracks to support Long Island’s economy, just as we did in 1844 when the track to Greenport was laid. Only now, we need to add a third track — or, as some call it, a Fast Track — to relieve the bottleneck between Floral Park and Hicksville. It is strangling the Long Island economy and, according to a recent report by the Long Island Index, building the Fast Track would relieve the problem and generate 14,000 new jobs, $5.6 billion in additional gross regional product, and $3 billion in additional personal income by 2035, 10 years after its completion. The Long Island Rail Road remains an extraordinary resource, but it needs to be thought of again as a two-way street. We also need to think beyond the auto-dependent suburban model to a future where young people, who are the workforce of that future, have the option to live on Long Island or in the city and have easy transit access to jobs in either place. Greenport knows the value of transit-oriented development arguably as well as any community on Long Island, because ferry, bus and rail facilities continue to power its reputation as a walkable village where people can live, shop, be entertained and get to work without driving. If Long Island now seizes on this time-honored track to success, the concept may well become fundamental to the revitalization of the region’s economy as well. Dave Kapell, a resident of Greenport, served as mayor from 1994 to 2007. He is now a consultant to the Rauch Foundation, which publishes the Long Island Index.

Middle Country honors March marvels Middle Country Central School District recently honored four students for their many accomplishments, both in the classroom and in the community, during the month of March: Centereach High School senior Matthew Capone, Newfield High School senior Jared Prevete, Dawnwood Middle School sixthgrader Xander Pinto and Selden Middle School sixth-grader Trista Clackett. “Matthew, Jared, Xander and Trista take their academic duties one step further by becoming leaders in the classroom and role models for their peers,” said Middle Country Superintendent of Schools Roberta Gerold.

Capone will enter his college career having already completed nine college courses. He is a member of the National Honor Society and National Italian Honor Society and plans to attend either John Jay College of Criminal Justice or Hofstra University in the fall to pursue a degree in criminal justice, forensic computer science and/or counter terrorism. Ultimately, he aspires to a career as a Secret Service agent or Homeland Security agent. Prevete currently holds a 92.54 GPA and will graduate in June 2015 with a total of 35 college credits. While taking three AP courses and three collegelevel courses, Prevete also serves on the

executive board for multiple clubs and is involved in many others. He is also a starter for the NHS varsity baseball team. Prevete plans to study computer science or accounting in college but has yet to make a decision regarding which school he will attend. Xander is described by his teachers at DMS as a student who after spending a week in middle school was ready for high school. He currently maintains a 97.5 GPA and is an active participant and leader in the classroom. Xander utilizes every free moment he has to read novels and is very active in his soccer league outside of school. He is looking forward

to trying out for the DMS soccer team upon entering seventh grade and aspires to be a professional soccer player. Trista has made the honor roll for the past two quarters and is on track to make it for the third quarter as well. Trista is an active member of the science club and is passionate about STEM lessons in the classroom. Trista regularly conducts her own science experiments using her own chemistry kit. She aspires to be a science teacher and hopes to conduct research in chemistry and evolutionary biology. In her spare time, she competes on a cheerleading team and is looking forward to trying out for the SMS team next year.

he Middle Country boys’ tennis team hosted Comsewogue Tuesday and narrowly fell to the competition.

It was tough for the Mad Dogs to keep pace with the Northport Tigers when that team fielded more than twice the competitors than Middle Country, and the Tigers raced ahead to a 105-20 Division II win. Middle Country head coach George Royce said that most of the districts’ athletes come from Newfield, so a venue change earlier in the year adversely affected his team. “At the very beginning of the season the athletic director moved us to Centereach, so a lot of our athletes [from Newfield] just didn’t come out for the team,” Royce said. “The Newfield kids didn’t want to take the bus over, and we lost quite a few good athletes, so we’re really short.” Short or not, finishing fifth for Mid-

dle Country in the 3,200-meter run was sophomore Luis Antonio Fernandez, a second-year varsity runner who had never competed in the event before. “We only had one kid in it and I already ran the 1,600 and I wasn’t feeling that good for the 800,” Fernandez said. “So I wanted to wait a little bit so I could recover.” Northport freshman Isaih Claiborne was at the head of the pack for the 3,200, and stayed with the leader, making big kicks down the final 200-meter stretch to cross the finish line at 11 minutes, 36.3 seconds. Crossing the finish line first in the 1,600 was a tie between Northport senior Michael Cossaro and junior Sam Napoli, who both finished in 4:59.03. Northport head coach Bob Burkley said his team’s victory was due to the number of competitors his team fielded that day. Burkley has been coaching for years and also noted that he coached Middle Country’s head coach back in 1974. “The team aspect is what won it for us,” Burkley said. “It was a team effort

because they ran in groups, and that was the key.” Middle Country standout Denzel Williams, a junior, is a premier sprinter and one of the fastest kids in League II, according to his coach. And Chris Weiner may be the best pole-vaulter in the league. Williams, who won the 100 in 11.6, said that the running conditions weren’t the best, as he ran slower than his personal best of 11.2. “The wind affected me — it was a long bus ride here and I didn’t get a good warm up,” said Williams, who specializes in the 100, 200 and long jump events. With the big win, Northport improved to 2-1, while Middle Country dropped to 0-3.

For this reason, an inaugural 4-mile run, which will take place on Saturday, Aug. 22, at 9 a.m., will help raise money for a higher fence to prevent further invasion by the deer population. Advanced registration is $20. In addition, it will cost $5 for children to participate in the Kids Fun Run. There will be awards for runners, music and raffles at the event. “It’s a really great cause,” Councilman Kevin LaValle (RSelden) said. “Hobbs farm is a hidden jewel in the area.” According to LaValle, the run has been made official by USA Track & Field. It will be timed and kept track of like any other official race. “We would like to make this a yearly event,” Pellegrino said. The inaugural run is not the only way to make a difference. There are only approximately eight regular volunteers at the

farm, including Dottie Meade, Elaine Gaveglia and Jason Castorano. Castorano finds himself fixing the farm equipment and handling the maintenance of heavy machinery, like the tractor. Meade helps out with a plot of land designated to educating young children and helping them learn and grow. According to Meade, regular volunteers included the Green Teens from the Middle Country Public Library, volunteers from Long Island colleges like Suffolk County Community College, Stony Brook University and Adelphi University and the Boy Scouts and the Girl Scouts. “We need volunteers, we need sponsors, and we need the word out,” Pellegrino said.

To The ediTor: Your recent article “State pol aims to boost green energy in schools” (April 16), regarding alternative energy legislation to help school districts fund the use of solar panels, was disturbing. Why should we be looking to lease solar panels when the price of solar panels has decreased by 75 percent in recent years? Solar panels are no long unaffordable. The school districts should buy them outright and reap all the savings in electric charges down the line. To lease the solar panels from [Wisconsin-based technology and energy-savings solutions company] Johnson Controls seems to be an unnecessary expense. it would be giving Johnson Controls too much “control” over our tax dollars. Take easy precautions to prevent crime Sun’s out, thieves out. As Long island heats up after a long, cold winter, so does criminal behavior. We’ve been seeing more and more reports of larcenies, burglaries and stolen property as the weather warms up. it may tick up from here into summer, which would be nothing new in the world of crime patterns. But many of these incidents can be avoided if people would just use their heads. That means locking our cars when we’re not in them, and not leaving purses and other valuables inside — and especially not in full view of every passerby. it also means turning the cars off and not leaving the keys inside. one of our reporters once called the police after spotting an idling but empty car in a parking lot, the lights on and the driver’s side door ajar. About five minutes later, a man who may or may not have been the owner got into the car and drove away. Leaving a car running and walking away from it is foolish, whether we are in a parking lot or in front of our own house. Why tempt fate? We should also remember to close the windows in our houses when we aren’t there. This one is tricky because it’s hot outside and there could be a lot of windows open. But we should all be in the habit of doing it just like we are in the habit of locking our front doors, because open windows can make an easy access point for burglars. Sometimes we cannot prevent a criminal from breaking in and stealing something, but we can reduce our risk by securing our belongings as much as possible.

hen you’re meeting deadlines every week, dealing with angry clients, when traffic takes forever for an important meeting or when body parts that all worked together for all those years now seem to be pulling in opposite directions, it’s easy to let the whole notion of romance slip. Sure, we have Mother’s Day,

Father’s Day, birthdays and Valentine’s Day — well, you have Valentine’s Day. I’m not a big fan of mass, romantic gestures on cue that support the card and flower industries, when we can make our boyfriends, girlfriends, husbands or wives feel special. But, much of the time, especially when we’ve got kids who have mastered the art of playing on our last nerve with the kinds of conversations that are soaked in sarcasm and disrespect, we might find it a tad challenging to find the time, energy and resources to raise the level of our romantic game. And yet, one day our children, who just yesterday seemed to have absolutely no use for the opposite sex, have made that remarkable transition from whispering to each other about who they like to mustering the courage to speak to that person. Recently, our daughter and her friends have been pulled

into the whirlwind of an eighthgrade formal. The communication network is extraordinarily efficient and reliable. Everyone, it seems, knows who is asking everyone else. It’s too bad they can’t add some algebra to the messages they’re all delivering to each other or, perhaps, a few Latin phrases that might be on an AP exam. As an aside, it’s too bad meteorologists, who still seem to be living with egg on their faces from the big blizzard miss of 2015, can’t develop a forecasting model with the same level of middle school accuracy. These kids seem to have taken a page from the birds on suburban streets, who sing loudly through the day, calling to their would-be partners to come share some quality time in their cheery, oak, maple and dogwood trees. One boy interrupted everyone’s lunch in the cafeteria, took a microphone and asked a girl to the formal.

Another suitor, who wanted to go to the dance with a softball player, took softballs and wrote one letter on each ball, to spell out “formal”? And, speaking of sporting equipment, another courageous boy filled a girl’s locker with ping pong balls, which spilled out on the floor when she opened it. In the back of her locker, he’d put a note saying he finally found enough, uh, balls to ask her to the dance. She said “yes.” There have been a few broken hearts and a few near misses, with a girl saying “yes” to someone just as another boy approached her with flowers. Those flowers suffered an unfortunate fate in the hands of the tardy suitor. Learning that a boy she didn’t want to accompany to the dance planned to ask her at an after-school activity, another girl changed her plans and was suddenly missing in action. Fortunately, it seems that, on balance, the anxiety level and

frustration is considerably lower than the amusement these classmates have for this process. The sound of those birds singing outside our homes may be just as recognizable and pleasant as a part of the courtship dance to men as they are to women — or indeed to the growing children. What is anti-Semitism today and how did it start?

recent editorial in The New York Times decried a blatant act of antiSemitism in Europe. Fans in a major soccer stadium in Holland chanted “Hamas, Hamas, Jews to the gas,” and “Jews burn the best.” The home team, FC Utrecht, subsequently apologized for the outrage that occurred in a game against Ajax Amsterdam on April 5, but just imagine how someone Jewish in the stands might feel in the midst of those shocking outcries. Worse, it was not an isolated incident. Kick It Out, a Brit-

ish watchdog organization, has reported that there were 59 instances of anti-Semitic slurs in the first half of the English Premier League soccer season, with chants of “Yids” and “Kill the Jews” at games. According to the Simon Wiesenthal Center, a human rights organization, there seems to be a new alliance between neo-Nazis and jihadists. After the terrible consequences of anti-Semitism in Europe in the previous century, it is hard to believe such bigotry still exists, much less is alive and flourishing for the rest of the world to witness. What is anti-Semitism today and how did it start? According to columnist David Brooks, there are three strains of anti-Semitism circulating now. The first is in the Middle East, where it feels like “a deranged theoretical system for making sense of a world gone astray,” according to Brooks. Iran’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, calls Israel the “sinister, unclean rabid dog of the region,” whose leaders “look like beasts and cannot be called human.” Iran’s President Hassan

Rouhani “reinstated a conference of Holocaust deniers and anti-Semitic conspiracy theorists,” who propagate the usual conspiracist idiocy about Jews drinking the blood of non-Jews and spraying pesticides across arable lands. “This sort of anti-Semitism thrives where there aren’t that many Jews,” according to Brooks. “The Jew is not a person but an idea, a unique carrier of transcendent evil: a pollution, a stain, a dark force responsible for the failures of others, the unconscious shame and primeval urges they feel in themselves, and everything that needs explaining. This is a … flight from reality even in otherwise sophisticated people.” Incredibly it can be a part of the architecture of society and taught repeatedly in some madrassas or schools to children. “It cannot be reasoned away,” said Brooks, “because it doesn’t exist on the level of reason.” “In Europe,” Brooks continued, “anti-Semitism looks like a response to alienation. It’s particularly high where unemployment is rampant. … The plague of violence is fueled by young

In the United States, which Brooks pronounced “an astonishingly non-anti-Semitic place,” nonetheless there is rising tide of anti-Semitism, especially on college campuses, with its basis seemingly in Israel’s policies toward Palestinians in Gaza and the West Bank. But why the policies of Israel should reflect on Jews in America any more than policies in Ireland reflected on the Irish in Boston, or the discriminatory and shameful treatment of Japanese Americans interned during World War II should have ensued, is simply bigotry. And anti-Semitism is a particularly virulent form of bigotry whose dark underside is hatred leading to violence and even extinction. History is filled with brutal examples including the pogroms, which preceded the First Crusade in 1096; the expulsion from England in 1290; the persecutions of the Spanish Inquisition and expulsion from Spain in 1492; the

It’s an evil virus that sometimes hides but does not die. Brooks suggested that the best response is confrontation, arousing the “brave and decent people” to take “a page from Gandhi” and stage demonstrations, as laws and governments reign in even the smallest assaults. “Disturb the consciences of the good people. … Confrontational nonviolence is the historically proven method to isolate and delegitimize social evil.” Is that enough? We seem to have conquered or, at least, mitigated the virus causing AIDS. Perhaps against this form of racism, we can together do the same?
