The Middle Country Public Library in Centereach beat out more than 150 applicants from across the United States to become a finalist for the 2015 National Medal for Museum and Library Service. The medal, which is awarded to five libraries and five museums every year, is the nation’s highest honor granted by the Institute of Museum and Library Services, an independent government agency. The award has existed for 21 years and celebrates institutions that demonstrate extraordinary and innovative approaches to serving the public. This is the Middle Country’s first time being nominated. “It’s an honor in itself to be a finalist,” Library Director Sophia Serlis-McPhillips said.
The library is one of 30 finalists. New York Sen. Kristen Gillibrand (D-NY) nominated the library, while former Congressman Tim Bishop sent a letter of support. The library staff then filled out a nomination form detailing its buildings, programs and communities it serves. The library described two of its initiatives: The Miller Business Resource Center, which offers business resources to businesses, entrepreneurs and nonprofits; and Family Place Libraries, a nationwide parent-child program. In 2012, the library received a $450,000 grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services to expand the Family Place program. Family Place programs encourage learning through play and help parents serve as the primary teacher in their child’s
life. The library has a special space where kids can play with puzzles, kitchen sets and blocks along with other toys that help them develop skills. It is also a great place for children to meet other kids. “Family Place brings together
a lot of key components,” said Kathleen Deerr, an MCPL assistant director and national coordinator for Family Place Libraries. “In Family Place we really connect families.” While Family Place serves MCPL continued on page A8

Muzio said they’ll feature music, prom dress shopping guides and hopefully raffles for prom-related services such as limos and flowers, and certificates from salons for hair and makeup. She is reaching out to local businesses to help. Kristina Strong from Rocky Point gave eight gowns to LI PromEZ to sell at the discount sale. The dresses — all from past proms and fire department installation dinners — have been stored in her basement without any plans to wear them again. Strong said she hopes to sell her old dresses to help herself and the buyer. “I’m hoping to make some money back from the dresses to use towards my college textbooks,” she said. “It’s also to hopefully help out some who might not be able to afford the original cost of these dresses.” Strong said she was fortunate that her parents were able to purchase her a new dress for all of her events. “I’m hoping someone gets to try them on and get their dream dress,” she said. Distracted driving discussion The Town of Brookhaven Youth Bureau is presenting a free presentation for teens about distracted driving on March 25. The event, which will be held from 6-8 p.m. at Brookhaven Town Hall, features an in-depth discussion along with guest speakers who will share their personal experiences on the subject. “With the prevalence of smart phones and texting, young drivers are easily distracted and they need to be educated about the dangers,” Supervisor Ed Romaine said in a press release. “This event

Children entering foster care often have a hard time adjusting, but the Town of Brookhaven’s annual Totes for Tots drive can make those kids’ transitions a little easier. Residents can help by donating new or gently used suitcases, backpacks and duffel bags, as well as new toothbrushes, toothpaste, combs, brushes, books, small blankets, stuffed animals, crayons, coloring books, writing paper and pencils. The donated bags, filled with the supplies, are given to displaced children who are being moved to foster homes to help with the packing of their belongings, so they don’t have to put their possessions into garbage bags. “During one of the most difficult times in their young lives, this program helps to give children some dignity and make their move a little less traumatic,” Supervisor Ed Romaine (R) said in a press release. The Brookhaven Town Youth Bureau and the Holtsville office of the Internal Revenue Service have teamed up for this year’s donation drive, which began on March 2. It is part of the Youth Bureau’s INTERFACE program, which provides goods and services to local people who are in need. Donation boxes are located at Town Hall in Farmingville and at the highway department’s main office on Old Town Road in Coram. MC honors its February Students of the Month Four students from the Middle Country Central School District were recently named February Students of the Month for achieving excellence as leaders in the areas of academics, athletics and extracurricular activities. Centereach High School senior Mark James Beukelaer, Newfield High School senior Jacob Murphy, Dawnwood Middle School seventh grader Oisin O’Sullivan and Selden Middle School seventh grader Maxwell Martin are this month’s honorees. “These students are leaders for their peers and positive influences in their
community,” said Middle Country Superintendent of Schools Roberta Gerold. “We are proud and fortunate to have them as students so that they may continue to make a positive impact on our district.” Beukelaer has received recognition as an AP Scholar based on his performance on exams. He has earned an Advanced Regents Diploma and was named an All-County Scholar Athlete by Suffolk County Soccer Coaches’ Association for his grades and excellence as team captain of the boys’ varsity soccer team.
Murphy is heavily involved in school activities including video club, art honor society, National Honor Society and the superintendent’s student leadership committee. After striking an interest in marine biology, Jacob pursued an internship at SUNY Stony Brook’s Marine Laboratory last summer and was offered an extension through the school year. Oisin currently has a GPA of 97. When not focusing on his studies, Oisin shows dedication and discipline while swimming competitively every day after school with the Sachem Swim Club.
Teachers regard him as a student that is determined to learn from his mistakes and who never makes the same mistake twice. Oisin aspires to be an Olympic swimmer. Maxwell is consistently on high honor roll and has been equally successful as a member of Selden’s basketball and football teams. As quarterback, Max was credited with six touchdowns in one game against the team’s rival. He hopes to pursue a career in the NFL, but plans to train as a physical therapist in case he doesn’t get drafted.

In the past, the center offered classes on business promotion and social media. In addition, the center has career counselors available who meet one-on-one with visitors and help them create or fix résumés. “It’s empowered [center clients] to find out what they need to do,” Serlis-

McPhillips said. Cristina Encalada, a resident who wrote a letter of support for the library, emigrated from Ecuador in 1993 and said the library is the reason she is finally in school studying what she loves — culinary arts. She said she spent many hours, even months, working with a career counselor at the library who helped her make the decision to go to school. She said it was a tough decision between nursing and culinary arts, but the counselor helped her make the right decision: “The reason I’m in college is [because of] the support of the library.” She also credits the library for helping her learn English when she came to
the United States. She said it offered a variety of courses that helped enhance her reading, writing and speaking. Encalada called the library a wonderful place with heartwarming people who really make a difference, not only with the programs it offers but the staff it has. “I’m happy I’m a part of it,” she said. The programs highlighted in the application were only one part of what makes the library what it is, Serlis-McPhillips said. She and Deerr said if it weren’t for the community, the support of elected officials and the staff, the honor would have never been bestowed. The Institute of Museum and Library Services is currently accepting public in-

put on Facebook. Residents who have attended the library can visit the institute’s page and share their stories or memories. Ultimately, the Institute of Museum and Library Services board makes recommendations on what libraries will receive the medal, and the director of the agency makes the final decision in the spring. Regardless of what the outcome is, Serlis-McPhillips said she is so thankful for how far the library has come and she thanks the public for its ongoing support and visits. “We’re thrilled they recognized the programs,” Serlis-McPhillips said. “I feel so much pride, I can’t tell you how proud I was. Everyone works so hard.”

It also caused me to do more bowling and compete nationally.” The head coach is sad to see two seniors graduate, but is looking forward to seeing what his underclassmen can do. While the team will not have any returning juniors or seniors next year, Dominguez said the team’s ninth grade class and its one eighth-grader embody
talent and potential. He’s honored to have had the success he’s had over the last six seasons, and hopes that success can continue for the Middle Country program. “It’s been rewarding working with these girls,” Dominguez said. “To see how hard they work, and some have received scholarships for their talents, it’s very rewarding. I’ve always enjoyed coaching, and it’s a special group of kids I’ve been fortunate enough to have over the last few years.”

Together we can make a difference
Important causes are only successful when a whole community stands behind them, which is why we are calling on our readers to participate in the upcoming headshaving events for the St. Baldrick’s Foundation to support research into childhood cancers. That participation can be shedding locks or just opening a wallet — either will make a difference. According to the National Cancer Institute, part of the National Institutes of health within the U.S. Department of health and human Services, the most common cancers overall are breast, prostate, lung and colon or rectal cancer. But the most common childhood cancers are types such as leukemia, lymphoma, brain cancer and bone cancer. The institute estimated that almost 2,000 U.S. children and adolescents
younger than 19 died of cancer in 2014. While childhood cancers are not as prevalent as others and the mortality rate is not off the charts, each case tugs at us for many reasons: There’s no one we love more than our children; kids are innocent, and some may not even be able to understand their own suffering; and there are few losses more tragic than those of lives that had been bursting with potential and dreams unfulfilled. There are small things we as residents can do to help ease that suffering, even if it is in the slightest of ways. That is why we hope readers of this newspaper will find some way to participate in the St. Baldrick’s Foundation’s cause. For more information about events in your area, see page A5.

A long history of false prophets TO ThE EDITOR: Many of us have watched in horror the actions of ISIS radicals. These actions have ranged from destroying irreplaceable antiquities to beheading “infidels” to forms of ethnic cleansing. There are those who say, “These people must be animals to behave in such a barbaric manner.” They are not animals, nor are many of them poorly educated. They are often people, like many of us, in search of answers to the chaotic riddle of human life. Someone comes along and says, “I know what God wants you to do.” These people listen, as have so many before them, then proceed to do horrific things. Is this behavior any different from the Spanish during the Inquisition? Is this behavior any different from the people of Salem during the witch trials? What about David Koresh in Waco, Texas, telling the Branch Davidians to, in the name of God, resist authorities to the death? Or Jim Jones, in Guyana, telling his followers to — again, in the name of God — kill their children and then themselves? What most of us believe we would do if a self-anointed prophet came along and told us to take some action is quite different from what many people actually do, particularly when that prophet claims to be speaking “God’s words.” There is a saying, God protect us from that which we do in his name.

We should all follow the rule of doing good for others.
I believe we should use what is happening in the Middle East as a warning of how easily masses of people can be led astray when the name of God is used to lead them. I believe we should all follow a basic rule: If your actions truly do good for others, without harming anyone, continue doing them; if your actions in any way cause harm, stop. Perhaps the unanswered questions regarding the existence of a supreme being and some cosmic plan that have plagued mankind since the very beginning of our arrival on this planet deserve to remain unanswered, at least until we can find nondestructive answers. y wife makes the best chocolate chip cookies in the world. I recognize designating something as the “best” is subjective. Sometimes, it’s not what’s in them that counts, but who makes them; although it’s impossible to imagine a softer, more flavorful cookie.
I recently celebrated a birthday with those cookies and, in the moment that I ate them, I could have been five, eight, ten, or even 16 years younger. Maybe I was returning from a run in Central Park, delighted to catch the scent of those cookies as I reached the fourth floor of my five-story walk up. A few weeks before my birthday, my wife and I celebrated a wedding anniversary. While 15 years isn’t exactly a milestone, it’s one of those “0” or “5” numbers that we who live in a base-10 system recognize. When you’ve been married for more than a decade and have kids, you tend to focus much less on “how are we doing” than you do on “how are they doing.” The “they” refers to the small people who look so delightful and charming while sleeping, but who have figured out how to make us see red when they fight
with each other, argue with us, or chew through time by checking Instagram, looking at the latest scores, or needing one more snack before moving to the next activity. While we reflect on the relationship that started it all during anniversaries, we hope our spouses know what we’re thinking and what we need on our birthdays, even when we ourselves can’t come up with anything we’d like. And so it was recently, when my family arrived early at one of our birthday restaurants. We go to these places to celebrate the start of another year because they serve kid-friendly food and they and the other patrons are indifferent to a sudden shout, an unexpected move, or an argument. We were so early that, to borrow from Dr. Seuss, “We sat in the parking lot, we sat there, we two (plus our kids), and we said, ‘How we wish we had some-
thing to do.’” My wife suggested we go to a batting cage. Our children, who practice softball and baseball through the year, groaned. Neither of them wanted to put on a helmet, find batting gloves and hit another ball at that moment. “It’s not for you,” my wife said, her eyes widening in a way that suggested they shouldn’t challenge her. “It’s for him,” she insisted, pointing to me. I wasn’t sure I needed to hit balls, either. The first batting cage was far too crowded. We found another one just a few miles down the road. I bought a few tokens, borrowed my daughter’s bat, dug in and took a few practice swings. The first contact between bat and ball was like a spark that traveled through my brain and back to my youth, to a time when hitting a baseball was the most exciting thing I could imagine in a day. I didn’t clobber every pitch and I

didn’t win a World Series, even in my mind. I just did what I tell my kids to do all the time: see the ball, hit the ball. I didn’t think about deadlines, responsibilities, or chores. There was no driveway to shovel or dishwasher to repair. There was only an approaching baseball and the tool in my hands to hit it. t started off simply enough. We were going to get a break from the wicked weather, get out of town and enjoy a little rest. I had fallen on black ice, hurt my back and this would be a chance to recover with no other responsibilities. Sounds innocent, right? So there I am, sitting on a deck outside my hotel room, propped up on some pillows, reading a good book, when my cell phone rings. “Hello, Lee, this is Harold.” It takes me a
moment to register that it is my next-door neighbor back home. “Lee, I just drove up my driveway, and I have to tell you that it sounds like you have a garden hose gushing inside your house. I know you are on vacation, but I thought I should call to tell you. Lee? Lee? Are you there?” I didn’t faint, but I considered it. Here I was, almost 2,000 miles away, and there is water gushing in my house because of cracked pipes. It took me some moments to pull my wits together, such as they were. So what does one do when one receives such a phone call? I offer this as a primer, and I will leave out the hysteria. In rapid succession, I called the plumber, another member of my household who was not home at the time but close by, my friend, another neighbor and the insurance company. After carefully taking down all the details, my insurance company called a restoration company, who came with giant fans to dry things out and a small instrument with twin

sensors to detect where there was water. And there was plenty of water—behind the walls, in the insulation, in the padding under the carpets, in the clothes closets and every other inch into which a droplet might fall. Then there were all the logistics to arrange: someone had to let in the restoration company and be available for them while they worked, someone had to authorize the work, someone had to sort through and mop up the wet and damp things in the rooms. And someone had to keep me informed of what was needed at any given moment. As the days went by, we ran up considerable phone time, and then we were scheduled to return. At that point, we were told two startling bits of information. First, I was assured that I shouldn’t be too shocked when I entered my house. After all, they had to strip the sheetrock, remove the ceilings, take off the light fixtures, transfer all the furnishings from the affected rooms into the

unaffected rooms, and generally rearrange my interior world. That was just part one. Part two was that it was snowing heavily in New York and flights were being cancelled all over the country. This was complication beyond the obvious. With my bad back, I was going to face the prospect of long delays in airport terminals and questionable departures. And the poor driver who was waiting in New York to pick us up and take us home! How long would he be stuck? Little did we, or he, know, he was about to spend the night at my house. Sleep over, you say? Yes, because when he finally drove down the driveway to my front door at 3 a.m. and lifted out the luggage, he discovered his car was stuck on the ice and he wasn’t leaving — at least not until after sunrise, when someone could be called to free him. Storms make for strange bedfellows, so to speak. So he slept uneasily in my most comfortable living room chair as

his wife called to check on him, in the night. And finally, a neighbor who is an early riser perceived the difficulty, got out his snow blower and enabled the driver’s escape. I will confess that, despite the gentle warnings, when I walked into my house and viewed my wall studs and ceiling beams and the general rearrangement of my favorite things, I almost lost it. Furthermore, my back was hurting and all I wanted was to brush my teeth and get into my own bed, which eventually did happen. So, what I can advise at this point, if you are planning a vacation, is to leave a key with one of your neighbors, along with the phone number of your plumber, and directions on how to find the shutoff for the water main. And upon your return, when people ask how your vacation was, just laugh.
