GoFundMe raises more than $40K for Lloyd Harbor girl Third-grade student struck by van in Huntington, undergoing treatment at Cohen Children’s Medical Center Two distant Long Island communities have rallied to support an 8-year-old Lloyd Harbor girl seriously injured in a Huntington accident earlier this month. GoFundMe campaigns have raised more than $40,000 to help Leah Mendelsohn, a third-grader at Lloyd Harbor School, who was hit by a van while crossing New York Avenue Nov. 3. Each fundraising campaign hopes to be able to offset the family’s medical bills while Mendelsohn begins her long road to recovery. “Communities come together when they need to,” said Lisa Pinsker, of East Northport, a longtime family friend of the Mendelsohn family. “I’m happy to know that it’s going to help them — and after the amount of money we raised, they are pretty grateful for it.” On Nov. 3, Leah was with her mother picking up her younger sister, Sara, from dance class at Laura’s Dance & Fitness Studio in Huntington at approximately 12:10 p.m. As Leah was crossing New York Avenue, she was hit by a 1997 Ford van traveling southbound driven by Pedro
Guerrero, of West Babylon. He stayed at the scene of the accident. Leah was transported to Huntington Hospital by the Huntington Community First Aid Squad, then transferred to the intensive care unit of Cohen Children’s Medical Center in New Hyde Park due to her extensive head trauma, liver and lung injuries. The first GoFundMe Campaign for Leah was launched by ENT and Allergy Associates, a Garden City-based medical practice where her father, Michael, works as a pediatric ear, nose and throat specialist. It has raised more than $22,800 of its $25,000 goal as of this paper’s press time Nov. 20 and can be found at www.gofundme.com/ helping-leah-mendelsohn. The medical office jumped into action as Dr. Mendelsohn has been out of work for several months, in and out of hospitals battling a life-threatening infection, according to Pinsker. “It’s the financial burden that’s hitting the family right now,” she said. “When he’s not able to work, he doesn’t get paid.” Leah’s father has extended his leave from work in order to stay 24/7 at the bedside of his daughter, who is undergoing extensive surgeries
at Cohen’s. She most recently underwent a skull reconstruction surgery Nov. 14. A second GoFundMe campaign was launched by family friend Tricia Avidano, of Cold Spring Harbor, who hoped to raise an additional $20,000 to help offset Leah’s medical bills and family’s expenses at this difficult time. Avidano turned to Pinsker for help in terms of helping direct the funds to the family. The page has raised more than $22,000 of its $20,000 goal as of Nov. 20 and is no longer accepting donations. Town Huntington officials, residents discuss how to tackle affordable housing The Town of Huntington has made efforts to tackle the lack of affordable housing in the past, but the best method to do so isn’t always clear. Town officials attempted last week to open public channels of communication, as housing legislation proposing additional changes is being put up for public feedback. That question and more was discussed at a Community Conversation on Housing for All held at the Cinema Arts Centre Nov. 17. Supervisor Chad Lupinacci (R) said the issue has only become more apparent with time. “If you look at renting someone’s basement, the average cost is $1,200,” Lupinacci said. “If you go for living in some of those beautiful new apartments in the village or elsewhere its $2,500.” Huntington has hosted numerous lotteries for affordable housing, including a Sept. 5 lotto for a four-bedroom house in the Harborfields Estates housing complex in Greenlawn for $221,000. The supervisor said more than 800 applicants came out that day hoping their name would be chosen, but of course only one would be so lucky. The town passed legislation in 2017 that required all new mixed-use developments in C-5 shopping center and C-6 general business zoning to consist of 20 affordable housing units. Yet, a 2018 study conducted by Huntington Township Housing Coalition found there are only 729 units of affordable housing in the township. The town would need 2,798 affordable housing units to meet demand by 2020, according to a 2016 HTHC report that used information from a 2005 Rutgers University study. “In the private market, supply and demand will dictate what a property will sell for, but it’s important that once a home is built and it is offered as affordable, it stays affordable,” Lupinacci said. Town officials, local advocacy groups and community members came to the forum in the early morning hours to hear what can be done to address affordable housing issues. The event featured information sessions on issues of accessory apartments and how housing and apartment developments impact the town from an environmental, parking and community character perspective.
Accessory apartments
Since 1991, Huntington has allowed residents to acquire a permit to partition their households to use them as rental space. While this has allowed for an increase in the number of inexpensive living spaces within the town, it has also faced pushback from neighbors. Joe Rose, the deputy director of the town’s public safety department, said there are approximately 1,750 accessory apartments spread evenly throughout every hamlet in Huntington.

Yet, residents have complained about tenants taking up on-street parking spots in front of neighbor’s homes, as well as fears of illegal or problematic connected apartments. “We want to keep the integrity intact as far as single-family dwelling having very minimal impact,” Rose said. “Every single complaint is investigated by code enforcement.” Ed Nitkewicz, an attorney who serves Huntington as the accessory apartments hearing officer, said residents often come to hearings arguing why these apartments should not exist in their neighborhoods. He frequently hears concerns about potential illegal or problematic rentable spaces. In response, Nitkewicz said most concerns are due to the mystique of these partitioned residences, and many issues can be directly reprimanded by town officials, unlike issues some might have of their regular neighbors’ homes. “It’s the mystery of the accessory apartment, its ‘Who’s going to be living there, what are the conditions of it?’” Nitkewicz said. “Let’s say the applicant sells their house to the Brady family… And they all have cars — all of them park in the driveway, and you have no control over that. You can’t tell the Bradys to pump their cesspool, you can’t tell the Bradys the numbers on the house are viewable.” The town board is considering new legislation that would allow residents to live in the smaller partitions of their homes, which would typically become the accessory apartment, and instead rent the majority of the available living space. A public hearing was held Nov. 20 at 7 p.m., after this publication’s press time. Councilwoman Joan Cergol (D) said she was very much in support of such an idea, but
accessory apartments only address a small part of the affordable housing issue. “It’s one way to make an impact, but I think it’s easiest to have because we’re talking about existing inventory versus new inventory,” she said.
Impacts of new housing
While most elected officials and advocacy groups agreed there is a problem with a lack of affordable housing, several speakers said one cannot underestimate the environmental and community cost of increased development. Matt Suter, one of the founders of the Save the Village civic group, has helped circulate a petition requesting that the town stop allowing developers to build above existing storefronts in Huntington village by adding apartment space on top of existing retail or commercial spaces. He said he fears the increase of hundreds of apartments being built in the village could go on to escalate the already high amount of nitrogen in areas like Huntington Bay, which has led to a rash of dangerous algae blooms during the summer 2018. “The crux of it is that Huntington village sits atop a watershed that is 1.9 square miles,” Suter said. “Anything you build on the watershed impacts this local ecosystem.” Huntington’s Department of Planning and Environment is in charge of conducting the town’s State Environmental Quality Review Act surveys on any new developments. Craig Turner, the department’s principal planner, said stormwater and the nitrogen filtration is a problem in Huntington village, these new developments are not having that much of an effect because they are built on already developed sites.
“SEQRA asks us whether there are significant environmental impacts, not if there are any environmental impacts,” Turner said. One project that was often referred to was the Avalon Huntington Station venture, which started nearly a decade ago. Developer AvalonBay Communities looked to build a large-scale apartment complex as well as change the property’s zoning to Transit Oriented Development. Opponents feared the project would raise taxes and create higher population density. Emily Rogan, who served 12 years on the Huntington school district’s board of education and was on the board when the Avalon Huntington project was underway, said one of the biggest fear residents expressed was that the project — if it went through as originally proposed — would increase the number of students in an already overflowing school district. The town board ultimately voted down the initial proposal in favor of a revised version that Rogan said had no impact on the number of children in the district once completed. “You can’t get stakeholder buy-in unless there is communication all throughout the process,” she said. Eric Alexander, the director of regional smart growth planning organization Vision Long Island, said there are ways to build residential developments to minimize the impact on both the surrounding community and the environment. “When the projects are planned with the local community, and there’s real local support, projects get approved, things get built, and people are generally happy with them,” Alexander said.

3 Station residents arrested for allegedly operating cocaine ring Three Huntington Station residents face a total of 47 charges for allegedly operating a cocaine distribution ring following an 18-month investigation conducted by Suffolk County’s District Attorney’s Office. Prosecutors said they found the trio had stored a kilogram of cocaine next to the bassinet of a 1-month-old baby. Suffolk County law enforcement officers arrested Adrian Bonilla, 40; Neftali Camacho Hernandez, 27; and Jennifer Perez Cordero, 28. They were arraigned in Suffolk County Supreme Court Nov. 14 for allegedly operating and conspiracy to operate an illegal drug trafficking ring, according Suffolk County District Attorney Tim Sini (D). “This indictment should serve as a warning to drug dealers who operate in Suffolk County that law enforcement is coming for you,” Sini said in a statement. “These are serious charges; two of these defendants are facing up to life in prison if convicted. We will continue to aggressively target, arrest and prosecute anyone trafficking this poison into our communities.” The district attorney’s investigation began

Blindsided: First snowfall strikes Huntington early If locals thought winter was still a few weeks away, they were proven absolutely wrong. A snowstorm hit Long Island and the greater New York area during rush hour Thursday, Nov. 15, taking both residents and, more importantly, local municipalities by surprise. Areas across the North Shore received from a little more than 3 inches of snow in Ridge up to more than 5 inches in Commack, according to the National Weather Service. Luckily, most of what had accumulated was washed away through the night by subsequent rain. It was likely only a taste of what’s to come. Kevin Orelli (D), superintendent of highways in the Town of Huntington, said the first snowfall of the season hit hard because of its timing. “No one was expecting to come home to a nightmare of traffic, we were supposed to be getting a dusting,” he said. “[It] was an extremely unusual combination of bad forecasting and bad luck.” Orelli said the town’s salt trucks headed out by 2:30 p.m. Nov. 15 to begin pretreating the roads, with Highway Department employees held for mandatory overtime as the snow began
Orelli said Huntington is current in the process of redesigning its snowplowing routes to create a more equitable distribution of roadway miles for each plow operator, in order to increase efficiency and speed up any future snow cleanups. The town is also looking to transition from using a mixture of sand and salt for pretreatment to a purely salt operation. “It’s much more effective in keeping the roads from freezing, and it’s less costly to cleanup,” the superintendent said. The sand used to provide drivers with traction on winter roadways gets washed into stormwater drains, clogging them up and creating issues with melting snow and early spring rains, according to Orelli. The town’s Highway Department has also gotten approval to purchase tank and spray bar equipment needed to start using brine to pretreat streets in advance of winter storms. Orelli said the equipment should be set up and ready to spray shortly, hopefully before the next major storm. Stranded boater rescued off Eaton’s Neck
Suffolk County Police Marine Bureau officers assisted a boater stranded in the Long Island Sound east of Eaton’s Neck last week. Fort Salonga resident Brian Curly was operating a 22-foot Striper bow rider approximately 200 yards off shore around 2:10 p.m. Nov. 17 when he believed his boat struck something in the water and became disabled.
Curly, who was with his 6 and 9-year-old daughters, called 911 and requested assistance. Marine Bravo, with Officers Paul Carnival and Keith Walters, responded to the stranded boat. After accessing the situation, the officers towed the boat to Soundview Boat Ramp in Northport. Curly, 48, and his daughters were unharmed.

The spirit of Thanksgiving was alive and well in Huntington Station Monday night. Andre Sorrentino, owner of PAS Professional Automotive Services on New York Avenue, hosted his 9th annual Sorrentino Turkey Drive Nov. 19 from 6 to 8 p.m. More than 2,000 frozen turkeys were given out to area residents in need in an effort to ensure all have the opportunity to sit down to a traditional holiday meal with their families. “This year, we’ve doubled the amount of people who wanted to be involved to help,” Sorrentino said.
“People came out in droves.”
The lifelong Huntington resident said his family’s tradition started one year when he purchased 30 frozen turkeys and handed them out of the back of a pickup truck. This
year, he purchased 2,000 and had accepted another 70 from community donations by Nov. 16. People were still walking in with donated birds in hand the night of the giveaway. While waiting on line for their turkeys, residents were offered hot dogs, hot cocoa, cotton candy and more as a DJ spun the latest hits lending to a carnival-like atmosphere. “It’s a good thing to help people and I’m trying to teach my kids that,” Sorrentino said. “If we had a little

Editorial Pausing to give thanks Alex Petroski, managing editor: I am thankful for our proofreaders at TBR News Media, Ernestine Franco and John Broven. Reporters and editors alike far and wide share a common recurring nightmare. They open up the newspaper to read their stories and notice, there in black and white for all to see, a glaring error. Not only is this embarrassing, it could also result in the violation of ethical standards should a source be misrepresented or quoted improperly, or worse still it could lead to lawsuits in the worst of scenarios. I’m one of the lucky ones. I have two dedicated, relentless sets of eyes backing me up at all times, catching mistakes and plugging holes before my work is crystallized in print. Their names don’t show up in bylines, but there are stories that go to print that only reach a point of deserving to see the light of day thanks to their stewardship. The newspapers you pick up every Thursday would be almost unreadable without them, and I am eternally grateful they’re on my team. Rita J. Egan, editor: I have a lot to be grateful for including my family, friends and the best boyfriend I have ever had. However, I can’t leave out my TBR News Media co-workers. I’ve learned something from everyone in this office, but I will be forever grateful to the young editors who I have had the pleasure of working with. They have not only reminded me of journalism rules that I may have forgotten during my time as an e-commerce copywriter, but also somehow patiently managed to teach me how to lay out a newspaper. Cuomo needs to stop running TV ads Election Day has come and gone and reminds me of “The Outer Limits” 1960s television show. With the end of roundthe-clock commercials by politicians, political parties, unions and pay-for-play special interest groups, we now return control of your television back to you until the next election cycle. Now if only Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D) would do the same. When will he direct the Empire State Development Corporation to stop running its wasteful
“public service” advertisements. After eight years in office, Cuomo has had this quasi-independent state agency spend several hundred million of taxpayer dollars to pay for these “feel good” commercials. They were clearly designed to assist him in greasing the wheels of another term in office and raise his profile in preparation for a presidential run in the Democratic Party 2020 primary. These commercials periodically run in heavy rotation on many stations several times
per hour day and night. Diogenes is still waiting for state Comptroller Tom DiNapoli (D), Democratic Conference Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins (D), state Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie (D) or a brave member of the state Legislature to come forward and challenge Emperor Cuomo to end this waste, fraud and abuse of public monies. Wondering where the happy is So where is the happy? I don’t mean content or grateful. I mean happy, cheerful. I’m not that happy at the moment and most of the people I know are not that happy. This was not intended to be a political retort, but politics these days defines our every waking moment. And that does not cause happiness. It appears certain people are just waiting for the opportunity to write nasty letters in response to someone who doesn’t share their political view. The same names keep recycling in the “Letters to the editor” page of this paper. You folks don’t seem too happy. Neither political side can fathom how the opposition thinks or feels. Everyone is under attack. This is not normal. If you are a supporter of this president, can you honestly say this is normal? There was extreme opposition to Barack Obama but it never rose to this level of out-and-out hatred, dishonesty and turmoil. We did not have daily news blasts of
the latest terrifying political event. Does this make you happy to hear and see this? Obviously all presidents have supporters and non-supporters. But now, if you don’t support this president or anyone in his administration — to date at least four are going to jail — violence, venom and mayhem ensue. I think it’s time we all take a breather. Let’s go about our lives in a more peaceful and respectful manner. Support your political candidates, be respectful of opposing views, be confident in your beliefs but we need to stop the ugly insults and threats. This trickle-down fearmongering is causing undue stress and extreme sadness on both sides of the political aisle. So when Trump supporters say the “liberals” have been bashing Trump since the election, well, yes we have. He has given us, and I believe even some of his supporters, every reason to be fearful and unhappy. Trump thrives off of derision and a divided
country. I believe we all want a country where everyone has a chance to succeed. The more successful individuals are the more successful our country is. We want a country where everyone should have the opportunity to be well educated and healthy. Where people of privilege help those of less privilege. We definitely want a country where everyone is encouraged and able to vote — according to the 15th Amendment — and American politicians nor other countries cannot or should not interfere with this right. We want a country where everyone’s civil rights are protected. A country where, as stated in the Declaration of Independence, “all men [people] are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness.” Remember happiness? Thankful for many loves this Thanksgiving
I
may be conflating two holidays, but this year, I’m thankful for love. Yes, I recognize that Valentine’s Day is a few months away. I’m not just talking about romantic love between two people who laugh, plan and enjoy building a life together while dealing with the inevitable chaos and curveballs. No, I’m talking about the kind of love that makes a cold, wet day manageable. We D. None recently added of the above a puppy to our BY DANIEL DUNAIEF home. We brought this new furry creature into our lives because we were moving and it seemed liked a way to add something to
our house that would be ours in a new setting. It also seemed to be a way to enhance our ability to socialize with our neighbors. Who, after all, can resist a cute puppy bounding down the street? Well, as it turns out, almost everyone, particularly on unexpectedly cooler days in a city that was supposed to be much warmer. Sure, people wave through their gloves and smile behind the wheel, but no one has stopped to ask if he or she can pet the little fella. No one has asked his age, his name or where we got him. But, hey, this isn’t about love for our neighbors, although I suspect over time we may come to love the distance we have from everyone or, on the bright side, a friendship that may seem inevitable after we meet other people eager to connect with those living nearby. No, this is about that moment when I open the door to the puppy’s room and he greets me with a tail moving so quickly that it could generate enough electricity to power the house for the day.

As we and our kids get older, the excitement at greeting each other after absences, even for a few hours or a day, left the arena of unbridled joy. Sure, we’re delighted to see each other, but the squeal with delight moments have morphed into understated greetings and subtle head nods that don’t displace carefully coiffed hair. We can also love the moments our senses pick up a familiar signal. That could be the scent of a pumpkin pie wafting across the living room, sending us back to our childhood when we visited with extended family that has long ago moved away. It could be the sound of our children practicing an instrument with such dexterity that the end of the composition brings both pride and sadness as the intricate sound has given way to silence. It could also be an appreciation for a warm, crackling fire late on a cold day as the winter sunset turns the light outside a deep orange, contrasting with the yellow hue near the sizzling logs. This is also the incredible season of anticipation,

as we love the prospect of seeing people we haven’t seen in person in weeks, months or years. We can love the expectation of seeing their faces, sharing stories, taking long walks on quiet roads or windy beaches, as we tell tales about everything from the miraculous to the mundane in intersecting lives interrupted by time and distance. As well, we can love the gift of time with each other, on our own or without particular commitment. Then again, we can love a positive result at work, if we’ve sold the unsellable property, finally checked something off a to-do list that seemed to be festering forever, or found some unexpected result in a lab that may one day lead to a treatment for an insidious or life-depriving disease. We are a thinking species, which ruminates over the past, contemplates the present and ponders the future. We are also blessed with the power of love, as Huey Lewis and the News sang in 1985. It’s still a powerful thing, even 33 years later.

During the week of Thanksgiving, Northport students and faculty wanted to make clear their unwavering support for one of their own. Northport school district held a charitable volleyball tournament Nov. 19 at the high school to raise funds and show support for 14-year-old Miles Lerner. Miles was on his way to cross-country practice Sept. 4 when he was struck by a 2005 Honda sedan traveling eastbound on Laurel Hill Road at 8:06 a.m., according to police. He
was airlifted to Stony Brook University Hospital with serious head trauma. He has recently returned home but faces extensive recovery. More than 30 teams participated with players including Superintendent Rob Banzer and Dan Danbusky, principal of Northport High School. The tournament winners were student team Ralph’s Italian Ices and staff Team Equation. The total amount raised was not available by press time Nov. 20.
