Fallen U.S. Airman Christopher Raguso, who perished in a March 15 helicopter crash, promised his Commack family he would get them a dog upon his return. Although he never came home, a local organization has stepped in to fulfill his pledge. Paws of War, a Nesconset-based nonprofit that helps connect dogs with veterans and retired law enforcement as companion animals or to be trained as service dogs, gifted a 4-month-old black Labrador named Calvin to the family Aug. 24. “I didn’t sleep at all last night I was so excited,” Raguso’s wife, Carmela, said. “We needed this — we’re wounded, our dad was a warrior, our hearts are broken and maybe this dog can help us.” Carmela Raguso told her two daughters, Eva, 5, and Mila,7, when the truck rolled up it was just their family friend, Joe Bachert, a retired member of the New York City Fire Department, bringing his own dogs for them to play with. Instead, Bachert came out of the vehicle with Calvin cradled in his arms. Eva ran forward with her arms outstretched, screaming with delight, and started to hug and kiss the young pooch. Mila asked her mother if the dog was theirs, who responded that of course he was. “I’ve been dreaming about this,” Eva said, as she held Calvin’s head close to hers. “I like him so much.” Raguso’s wife said Eva took the death of her father hard. The couple’s youngest had taken to sleeping in bed with her, “to keep her father’s side of the bed warm.” Now, with the addition of Calvin, Eva said she will be sleeping in her own bed with Calvin always at her side. “To have this dog be her buddy and especially be her sleeping buddy, maybe she’ll sleep well,” Raguso’s wife said. “It’s been tough, but we put one foot in front of the other — we honor the dead by living.”
Raguso was one of seven members of New York’s 106th Rescue Wing killed in the line of duty when a H-60 Pave Hawk helicopter crashed while carrying out a mission in support of Operation Inherent Resolve, an American-led mission to defeat ISIS in Iraq and Syria, according to the U.S. Department of Defense. “One can’t even imagine what the family is going through, and we hope that this adds a little sunlight to their lives because they’ve been in darkness for some time,” said Smithtown resident Robert Misseri, a co-founder of Paws of War. The black Lab was just one of a litter of 11 puppies that Paws of War’s sister organization and nonprofit rescue group Guardians of Rescue saved from a high-kill shelter in Louisiana, days before they would have been put down, according to Misseri. The rest of the dogs will be given to other veterans and veterans’ families either as a companion animal or be fully trained as a service dog. The Nesconset nonprofit provided the Raguso family with a puppy starter kit that included everything from food to toys, and even a cage. Calvin is already leash trained and housebroken, and Misseri said the rest of the dog’s training will be provided for free. “The goal is just to make their lives better and put smiles on their faces,” said Bachert, who is a member of Paws of War and served as Raguso’s drill instructor in the Commack firefighter academy. By all accounts, Calvin was excited to be with his new family, but he was still nervous of new places. As the family tried to bring him into the house the young puppy shied away from the door. It was only when Eva went inside, suddenly upset by a rush of emotions, that Calvin darted after her. He instinctively knew his role with the family, to comfort them in their continued grief.

Republicans seek to add Stop LIPA line to ballots
Huntington Republicans have filed petitions seeking to add an additional party line next to their name on ballots this November. Suffolk County Board of Elections confirmed that petitions were received seeking to create a Stop LIPA party line, a move conducted with the hope of capitalizing with voters on Long Island Power Authority’s ongoing legal battle with the Town of Huntington over the Northport Power Station. “This is a major issue with us losing a major decision in court,” New York State Assemblyman Andrew Raia (R-East Northport) said. “We need to send the loudest message we can to Gov. [Andrew] Cuomo. What better way to send a message than to have those who are concerned voice this at the polls.” Raia referenced the decision made by Judge Elizabeth Emerson Aug. 16 that dismissed the third-party beneficiary lawsuits brought forth by the Town of Huntington and Northport-East Northport school district in which the judge found LIPA made no promise not to challenge the tax-assessed value of the Northport plant. Raia is one of four political candidates who obtained the 1,500 signatures needed to petition for a Stop LIPA ballot line. The three Republicans who joined him are: Jeremy Williams, challenger for the state’s 10th Assembly District; Jim Leonick,

candidate for Huntington town council; and Janet Smitelli, campaigning to be Huntington’s receiver of taxes. Leonick, who previously ran for Huntington’s board in 2017, said he believes LIPA’s lawsuit against the town should be one of the leading issues this election cycle. In campaigning, the candidate said he feels residents haven’t been kept well informed on the situation and need leadership not simply willing to oppose LIPA, but also to consider alternative solutions. “They haven’t all been open to other methods
of addressing the LIPA situation,” Leonick said. “Such as eminent domain or a [British thermal unit] tax. I’m open minded and I think we need to broaden our defense.” Smitelli could not immediately be reached for comment on her petition to obtain a Stop LIPA party line on the ballot. Huntington Councilwoman Joan Cergol (D), appointed to her seat earlier this year and running for a full term against Leonick, called Republicans’ effort to create a Stop LIPA line deceptive. “You are taking a serious issue and you are
creating political fodder with it,” she said. “For him to try to create a Stop LIPA line with his name next to it is basically false advertising.” The councilwoman said both eminent domain and the energy tax have been discussed, but were measures not supported by Republicans in town government. She said having sat through executive sessions with Huntington’s attorney on the matter, she has gained greater knowledge and insight of the issues that have shaped her decisions and public statements. “What makes [Leonick] more dedicated or committed to fighting LIPA’s reassessment than me?” she asked. “He didn’t call me up. He doesn’t know.” Cergol accused Republicans’ canvassers of being deceptive when soliciting signatures for the Stop LIPA petitions, claiming residents thought they were signing a petition to stop the utility company from having the plant reassessed. “We made an effort to ask volunteers to explain to people exactly what they were signing,” Leonick countered. “We did not do this to be deceptive.” Suffolk Board of Elections officials said anyone who objected had three days to file a general objection, with six more days to file specific lists of objections. Cergol said her campaign has filed notice of objection with attorneys working on drafting a more specific list of legal objections to be submitted later this week. “They’re just sorry they didn’t think of it first,” Leonick said.

A Huntington attorney with a history of public service has stepped forward to become the Democratic Party’s next challenger for the state’s 12th Assembly District. Centerport resident Avrum Rosen has become the Suffolk County Democratic Committee’s candidate to face off against incumbent Assemblyman Andrew Raia (R- East Northport). “I had been thinking about running again as we’re in pretty upsetting times, I don’t think we can be complacent anymore,” Rosen said. “I don’t think any Republican candidate who takes the positions Raia takes should go unchallenged.” A panel of four judges in New York State Supreme Court’s Appellate Division in Brooklyn ruled Aug. 22 that Northport resident Michael Marcantonio, 31, Raia’s original challenger, did not meet the state’s minimum five-year residency requirements after casting his 2014 ballot at Duke University in North Carolina while enrolled as a law student. As such, Rosen said he decided to contact the
Democratic Party about running for the position. He previously unsuccessfully ran for a state political office once before in 1996 in the 10th Assembly District against the late Jim Conte. “I was a complete novice at the time,” Rosen said. “With no funds and a lot less experience than I have now, I ran a very competitive race.” Rosen currently runs a Huntington-based law firm, specializing in bankruptcy claims in addition to handling commercial and residential real estate cases. He received his law degree from Hofstra University. “I went into bankruptcy work as it’s not that different from social work,” he said. “I call it economic social work to fix things in businesses and in people’s lives.” The Democratic challenger served on the Town of Huntington’s planning board for nine years starting in 2002, where he said he’s fought for changes to put more restrictions on business operations like 7-Elevens — including opposing the 7-Eleven built in Centerport. Two other key issues Rosen hopes to be able to address are state gun laws in the wake of school shootings such as Parkland, Florida, and Long Is-
land Power Authority’s tax certiorari case to get the Northport Power Station reassessed. “I’m a king of think outside the box type of guy,” he said. “I’ve been doing my homework and I think there are some solutions no one had talked about, including the municipalities’ rights to levy carbon taxes that might get LIPA to modernize the Northport plant.” Admittedly, Rosen said he had “a lot of work to do” and there’s still a chance he may not wind up on the Nov. 6 ballot. Marcantonio will be pleading his case before the judges in the state Court of Appeals Aug. 29, and if they do, he hopes to have the Appellate Division’s decision overturned to get his name back on the ticket. “We feel confident they will hear our case given the importance of the issues at [hand] right now,” Marcantonio said Tuesday afternoon. “We need to raise the issue of student voting as they are prohibiting a common practice among New York students who participate in life of their college communities, and are preventing them from being able to run for office.” Raia also confirmed there is an appeal filed against the Appellate judge’s decision that allowed

the Suffolk Democrats to designate Rosen as the party’s new candidate. If overturned, he said the petitions could be found invalid and Rosen could also be ineligible to run. The results of the court proceedings were not available by the publication’s press time.

Northport school officials await results of K-Wing air study District’s environmental consultants took 26 samples earlier this week; results to be reviewed by New York State Department of Health Northport-East Northport school officials and parents are awaiting the results of the latest Middle School K-wing air quality samples prior to the school’s reopening next week. The district’s environmental consultant firm J.C. Broderick & Associates Inc. took 26 air samples throughout the K-Wing of Northport Middle School earlier this week to see if issues with gasoline fumes have been fully resolved after extensive summer renovations. “The question I have been asked is are we going to test before we reopen the K-Wing,” Superintendent Robert Banzer said. “The answer is yes.” Edward McGuire, of J.C. Broderick & Associates, said the testing consisted of placing two air sampling cannisters in every single classroom and office space, two in the hallway, and two in the warehouse space beneath the wing, which was the previous site of chemical storage, to see what level of volatile organic compounds, known as VOCs or fumes, are present. In addition, two cannisters were placed outside the building to represent the ambient air that is brought into the school building via the ventilation systems. “It is the créme de la créme of VOC sampling,” the consultants said. “There is no better methodology.” The cannisters were placed at varying heights 3 to 5 feet off the ground in each location, according to McGuire, meant to replicate the typical breath-

ing zone of a seated or standing person within the space. Each room was independently sealed off before air samples were collected for a continuous eight-hour period while the newly installed rooftop ventilation systems ran, McGuire said, meant to replicate “typical occupancy conditions.” Brandon Weisberg, project superintendent for district contractors Park East Construction, said the K-Wing classrooms were ripped down to the studs this summer. New plumbing was installed, fire stoppers sealed, and a special heavy-duty vapor barrier applied on the concrete subsurface between the underground warehouse storage and K-Wing to prevent any fumes from penetrating into the air,
according to Weisberg. The district also had new rooftop heating, air conditioning and ventilation units installed while also sealing the older ground-level passages with concrete. The environmental consultants said their staff has worked with the district’s contractors to obtain safety data sheets for each material used in renovating the K-Wing this summer, providing a list of any potentially hazardous chemicals contained in each product. McGuire said this data will be used to help analyze the air samples and potentially used to identify the source of any abnormally high fumes or airborne chemicals found during the sampling. “The sensitivity of the analysis will always find
VOCs in the air,” McGuire said. “Our expectations are also a little higher because we know everything is brand new.” The consultants were asked to explain during a presentation at an Aug. 23 board of education meeting that any smell in the K-Wing could be similar to the odors detected by new car owners when they sit inside the vehicle. J.C. Broderick said they will be doing a twopart comparison of the air samples taken. The first part will be a report on the ambient levels of each VOC detected, while the second phase will examine the levels found against healthy safety guidelines established by New York State Department of Health. McGuire said the standards being used will be compared against the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s dose concentration guidelines, which consider different levels for sensitive populations, such as young children. The results of the air quality testing were expected to be received within approximately 72 hours of the end of sample collection, or 48 hours after the cannisters were delivered to the laboratory. The final report will be sent to New York State Department of Health for its review prior to the classrooms being reopened to student and staff use. The results were not yet available as of noon Aug. 29, according to the superintendent. Banzer assured residents the district has repurposed the old warehouse space as a dry storage for “paper goods” and other such things. “There are no chemicals stored down there, all that was eliminated last year,” he said.
Northport-East Northport district completes nearly $17M in upgrades BY ANTHONY PETRIELLO
Northport students can look forward to brighter, more modern classroom experience in the 2018-19 school year. Northport-East Northport Union Free School District has undertaken more than $17 million in renovations of its nine school buildings during the summer break. The most visible change to visitors will be the five security vestibules installed at six buildings: Northport High School, East Northport Middle School, Dickinson Avenue, Fifth Avenue, Norwood Avenue and Pulaski Road elementary schools. These vestibules have two sets of electronically controlled doors, creating what’s called a “mantrap,” Principal Dan Danbusky said. This design aims to isolate entrants into the building, so as to secure the students behind a protective barrier. Each vestibule will be manned by two to three employees, including a security officer, and feature bulletproof glass. These improvements will be built into existing main entrances at each building,
according to Danbusky, added as needed depending on the specific building layout. The district’s remaining four buildings will have security vestibules installed at a later date, according to Superintendent Robert Banzer. In addition to security upgrades, the district has been hard at work this summer overhauling parts of the high school’s interior. “The 21st century upgrades that are part of the bond project will enhance the educational, athletic and co-curricular experiences for all students” Banzer said, “and provide important security enhancements and improved infrastructure throughout the district.” At Northport High School, 10 science classrooms have been completed stripped down to their studs to create a more focused learning environment for students. Previously, the science classrooms were multiuse, meaning they were designed to function universally for any science program. “What you won’t see in the new science wing are students sitting in 5-by-6 rows,” David Storch, the district’s chairman of science and technology
education, said. “Students will have the accessibility to truly work at an advanced level in all subject areas within the science department.” Following the overhaul, the high school will have specialized science rooms designed to teach specific subjects including six chemistry rooms, two biology rooms and two physics rooms to give better utilization of available space and following modern building standards. A new addition to the science wing is a 20×30-foot freestanding greenhouse, expected to be finished by mid-September, which will be utilized for Advanced Placement Environmental Science classes. “The world in terms of advanced research has expanded,” said Danbusky, adding, “You’ll see students involved in inquiry and in hands-on activities.” Athletes will be returning to renovated sports fields at the high school, including a completely new turf field and track in the stadium. Also included is a complete reconstruction and redesign of the other fields on the grounds. These upgrades are including, but not limited
to, Sweeney Field, which will be rotated to run north to south along the west property line, three practice fields and two softball fields. All existing fields will be aerated and freshly seeded. The total cost of the high school renovations will come in at about $16 million, according to the district’s website. At Northport Middle School, the district is also carrying out extensive upgrades. The science labs have been completely renovated in order to bring them up to modern standards similar to that of the high school. As part of the construction on the science wing, a large teacher prep and storage room as well as two other labs will be renovated at a total cost of $2.5 million. In the gymnasium, new rooftop heating, ventilation and air conditioning units have been installed, at a cost of more than $400,000. The Middle School’s baseball and softball fields have received a $900,000 update which includes a new clay infield, new infield drainage, replacement sod at the baseball infield, new backstops, fencing and dugout enclosures. Michael S. Gilmor of Huntington, died suddenly Aug. 25. He was a Fulbright scholar and 2013 alumnus of the Elwood school district. “On behalf of the entire Lomza State University of Applied Sciences’ community we express our deepest sorrow for the untimely death of Michael Gilmor,” Magdalena Trojanowska wrote on behalf of the university. “He made outstanding contributions to the international development in our university. Town of Huntington officials paid tribute last Saturday to a Huntington Station resident who lost his life to 9/11-related illnesses. Supervisor Chad Lupinacci (R) led a street ceremony Aug. 25 dedicating Valleywood Drive in Huntington Station in honor of former New York Police Department officer Scott Blackshaw. “NYPD Officer Scott Blackshaw embodied the American spirit that rises to any challenge, a spirit of selfless sacrifice to help others in need, and a spirit of resolve and bravery committed to defending our way of life,” Lupinacci said. “Scott Blackshaw dedicated his time and his love to his family.” Blackshaw was a graduate of Northport High School who joined the NYPD in 1990. He patrolled the Manhattan South borough and worked for the 13th Precinct at the time of the 9/11 attacks on the World Trade Center. He spent six weeks on duty at Ground Zero working the pile, searching for traces of his fallen comrades and fellow citizens. “We must never, ever forget what a hero really means is someone who is selfless, who gives of their time and energy because they care about their community,” state Sen. Carl Marcellino (R-Syosset) said. “Scott was such a person.” Blackshaw lost his battle with cancer sustained as a result of his work at ground zero May 20. He was 52. The town supervisor said his neighbors recalled how he was the type of person who used to help cut their grass for free and plow their driveways when it snowed. As he fell ill, Blackshaw’s friends and neighbors rallied to his support to take care of him, calling themselves “Team Scotty.” He, in return, call them “his angels,” according to Lupinacci. “Scott was one of those people, he cultivated a
family right here on this road,” said Suffolk County Legislator Tom Donnelly (D-Deer Park). “This sign will be a living testament not only to NYPD Officer Scott Blackshaw but to the kind of person he really was.” More than 10,000 people have been diagnosed and certified to have 9/11-related cancers and illnesses, according to John Feal of the FealGood Foundation. The foundation is a nonprofit dedicated to helping all emergency personnel who have faced injury or illness due to their time of service get the health care they need. On Sept. 15, Feal said Blackshaw’s name will be officially added to the hundreds of other first responders and emergency personnel who lost their lives as a result of the attacks listed on the memorial wall at the 9/11 Responders Remembered Memorial Park, located on Smithtown Boulevard in Nesconset. “Today’s street ceremony serves a purpose like the park,” he said. “That history is never distorted and so generations to come will know the sacrifice that Scott and others made. These are tangible items that you can see and can touch will be a reminder that Scott was truly a hero.” Following the unveiling of the new street sign, Blackshaw’s friends and family hosted a block party to honor his life with donated food, drinks and supplies from the Best Yet in East Northport, East Northport Beverage and The Home Depot in Huntington. Blackshaw’s brother, David, said it was amazing to see the community come together for Scott, providing him with a “full life.” “My brother wouldn’t want this sign up on the street, and he would tell you all to go away,” he said, his words answered by laughter. “But now that the street sign is up, he’d say it’s your responsibility to cut your grass every week and pick up your leaves.”

We need to simplify politics With less than two weeks to go before New York State’s primaries, we’ve been ramping up our coverage of the 2018 elections at TBR News Media. One thing has become abundantly clear: There are a seemingly endless number of hurdles for who can run, their campaigns and how to vote. In Shoreham, Rocky Point Fire Chief Mike Yacubich has fought to stay on the ballot after citizens in the state’s 2nd Assembly District challenged his petitions to be the Republican candidate to run for the seat. Their objections were based on the fact that he and his son share the same name — and that there was no distinguishing middle initial indicated on the forms — which they argued could have led to confusion for voters. In Northport, Democratic hopeful Michael Marcantonio was found ineligible to run for the state’s 12th Assembly District after it was brought to the court’s attention he cast his vote in North Carolina in 2014. At the time, he was a law student at Duke University and didn’t realize judges may rule that ballot severed his five-year residency in New York, which is the time required to run for political office. In Huntington, Republican candidates have petitioned to create a “Stop LIPA” ballot line for the Nov. 6 elections. Their opponents have filed objections. It has raised questions about when Stop LIPA became a legitimate third party and cast doubts on which elected officials are rallying against the utility’s attempt to get the taxes lowered on its Northport plant, an issue we see as local and party-less. Throughout the summer, we’ve seen voter drives encouraging teenagers to register before heading off to college. The process of simply obtaining an absentee ballot requires completing a preliminary application that needs to be hand delivered to the Suffolk County Board of Elections Yaphank office or snail mailed at least seven days in advance, and casting an absentee ballot then requires a second trip to the post office. Also, being required to work during polling hours is not listed as a valid reason for obtaining an absentee ballot. Our state laws regarding how to run for office and how to cast a vote need to be simplified. The process needs to be streamlined and modernized. Our failure to do so hurts both Democrats and Republicans, it knows no party lines. Rather, it collectively silences the voices of aspiring politicians looking to make a difference, employees working long hours to make ends meet and uninformed youth who find too many barriers between them and the polling booths. First, information on how to run for office and eligibility needs to be made clear and more easily available to the public. A fundamental concept to our democracy is that anyone can run for office — but they have to know how and what to do. In New York state, anyone with a valid driver’s license can register to vote online and change their party affiliation. Given this is possible, we fail to see any reason why a request for an absentee ballot should not also be fileable via email or an online form on Suffolk County Board of Elections’ website with an electronic confirmation given. With the technology available today, it’s hard to believe we’re locked into pen-and-paper forms and snail mail to register political candidates for elections and to vote if temporarily out of state. It’s time we re-examine these methods. Participating in democracy should be getting easier, not more difficult.

McCain deserves respect from president
One of the finest politicians of our era was Sen. John McCain, whose recent death has upset nearly all of us, with the possible exception of the current mindless occupant of the White House. Republican McCain was a superb human being and a very admirable politician — a man of great honor and integrity, who was highly respected by members of both political parties. His defense of his Democratic opponent, Barack Obama, during the 2008 election, was a perfect example of McCain’s quality as a man. McCain’s deeds and words were appreciated by nearly every one of us Democrats, especially when McCain defended Obama from some absurd remarks made by ignorant people about Obama’s
country of origin. President Donald Trump’s repellent and highly insulting comments about McCain during Trump’s uniquely appalling presidential campaign should have caused Trump to be defeated in 2016. Most Republicans were indignant about Trump’s disgraceful remarks about the senator, whom he disgustingly accused of not being a hero because he had been imprisoned in Asia by the enemy of the U.S. What a monumentally stupid remark! Every day Trump somehow dishonors our nation deeply, perhaps permanently. Anyone with half a brain could understand and respect the comments, the deeds, the sacrifices of McCain, especially in the 20th
century. On the other hand, Trump’s mindless insults in 2016 will permanently remain among the ugliest nastiness in American political history. I read that the McCain family does not want the president to speak — maybe not even show up — at McCain’s funeral service. Excellent rejection! Nearly all of us, including my fellow Democrats, are now deeply saddened by the passing of the senator — a fine politician, a great American hero, a man of impeccable morals. Senator’s death a lesson in health care I was saddened to learn of the death of Sen. John McCain this past weekend. I have great respect for McCain’s service to his country. He endured hardships in his years as a prisoner of war in Vietnam that I can’t imagine. As a progressive Democrat, I disagreed with his politics and many of the votes he cast, but he is a shining example of a man who loved his country and led a life of public service. As we talk about this man and his life, there’s something no one is discussing that is really important — and that is health care. McCain was able to treat this
very aggressive form of cancer for the past year because he had excellent health care, provided by the government. He chose to end the treatment and to enter hospice and die surrounded by those who loved him. How many millions of Americans don’t have these options? How many millions of Americans have been bankrupted by health care costs? How many times have our politicians, including our very own Congressman Lee Zeldin, voted to deny these options to the Americans they were elected to serve? Some may think it’s too political to
talk about this at the end of a man’s life, but I don’t. Politicians like McCain make decisions about health care that affect all of us. I firmly believe that every American has the right to the same health care that members of Congress have. My heart goes out to his family. Illness, loss and end of life is painful. May they find comfort and peace in the coming days. And may we finally have the justice of health care for all in this nation, the way every member of Congress does. Trump’s trade policies are hurting America On Tuesday, July 24, President Donald Trump announced plans to provide $12 billion in emergency aid to farmers harmed by his trade policies. Just so we all are clear, this means that the president started a trade war which hurt farmers because of retaliatory tariffs on soybeans and pork, and in response the president offers the farmers welfare which is paid for with money he’s borrowing from the countries (e.g., China) he started the trade war with. So instead of profiting from the sale of American food to China, Trump’s trade policy has the U.S. paying money (interest) to China while U.S. farmers become dependent on our government. The criticism of the president’s trade policy is not only coming from the polit-
ical left. Members of his own party have said on the record: • “If tariffs punish farmers, the answer is not welfare for farmers — the answer is remove the tariffs,” Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.); • “This trade war is cutting the legs out from under farmers and White House’s ‘plan’ is to spend $12 billion on gold crutches. America’s farmers don’t want to be paid to lose — they want to win by feeding the world,” Sen. Ben Sasse (R-Neb.). Trump responded to these critiques by saying “be a little patient.” It would be easier to be patient if the president’s Republican policies of tax cuts for the wealthy and increased spending were working to greatly expand the economy and
pay down the debt. In 2017 Trump pledged to eliminate the national debt over a period of eight years. But here we are a year and a half into his presidency, and the national debt surpassed $21 trillion for the first-time ever. So far, a year and a half in, Republicans have managed to increase our debt and our deficit, with no gains in real wages for working Americans. Color me unimpressed by Trump, Zeldin and the Republican leadership in Congress. So forgive me, Mr. President, if I have trouble being patient when you spend $12 billion on welfare to farmers who are harmed by your policies, and continue to raise the national debt. Appreciating workers of all stripes
L
abor Day offers a chance to consider the division of labor that makes living on Long Island and in the United States so incredible. Police officers stand ready to protect and serve. They leave their homes with the best of intentions, providing safety, security and order to our communities. Similarly, firefighters offer an enormous measure D. None of protection for us individually and of the above collectively, racing BY DANIEL DUNAIEF into burning buildings to save us and keeping fires from spreading to nearby homes. Members of the military protect our interests and help residents in our communities, country
and strangers around the world. Priests, rabbis, imams and other spiritual leaders encourage us to aspire to greatness, to see beyond our frustration and anger, and to believe in a higher purpose and a grander plan. They bring out the best in us and suggest ways to give our lives meaning beyond meeting our basic needs. Psychologists and psychiatrists act as handrails for people’s minds and emotions, helping us deal with a wide range of challenges, frustrations and difficulties. Doctors, nurses and medical health professionals refuse to allow bacteria, viruses or injuries to get the better of us, standing ready to help us fight an infection, determining what that mysterious pain is and, at best, help treat the cause of the disorder and not just the symptoms. Sanitation workers enable us to keep our homes and communities clean. Supermarket workers stock the shelves, help us find gluten-free food to manage our growing list of allergies, and make sure they have the specific brand of the milk we buy.
Car mechanics allow us to reach our appointments on time and make it to our children’s concerts. Teachers feed hungry young minds, encouraging and inspiring the next generation, coming in before school or staying late to will students across another academic finish line. Beyond offering the welcoming smile at many companies, receptionists wear numerous hats, directing traffic through offices, sending phone calls to the right extension, and knowing how to find anything and everything. When we maneuver through the purchase of a home, the establishment of a will or the adoption of the newest member of our family, lawyers guide us through each process, becoming advocates for our interests and close confidants. In the wee hours of the morning, bakers start the process of creating scones, heating up coffee and mixing the batter for birthday cakes. Truck drivers spend hours on the road, carting all manner of goods, bringing foods or marble we have to have on our kitchen counters. Ferry workers usher us back and forth on
the Long Island Sound to visit family, to take ski trips, to return to college, or to visit sites in Connecticut and farther north. Plumbers, electricians and structural engineers make sure our homes and offices operate smoothly, preventing a leak from becoming a flood, a spark from becoming a fire or a weak wall from becoming an accident site. Driven by the desire to inform and to beat the competition, journalists search for news that offers valuable information. Entertainers of all stripes keep us laughing, allow us to relate to people from other places or times — or take us on fantastic journeys to places in their minds. Politicians represent our interests, debating and hopefully instituting the best policies for the rest of us. Numerous others, whose professions didn’t make it into this space, also help our communities function. While Labor Day is a chance to say “goodbye” to summer, it presents an opportunity to appreciate the hard work everyone performs.
People can’t do what they did physically when they were young. Parents die but you move on. Colleagues forget the favors you did. The race to achieve slows. But true friends are always there, no matter how long or how many miles away they are. A friend is never more distant than the reach of a need, intervening in your favor, waiting for you with open arms and in some way blessing your life. When we started this adventure called life, we did not know of the incredible joys or sorrows that were ahead. We did not know how much we would need from each other. Love your parents, take care of your family, but keep a group of good friends. Stay in touch with them. [Tell this to] your friends — even those you seldom see — who help make sense of your life. We can comfort each other as we laugh about the difficulties and perceived difficulties in our lives, and we never need to feel embarrassed about our thoughts or our hang-ups. The most painful part comes with the inevitable loss of close friends. They are irreplaceable and their absence leaves a hole in our lives and our hearts. “I’m only going to befriend younger people I meet,” we declare. The same for our doctors and dentists, who have the temerity to retire or die. So to my dear friends — and yes, those professionals who keep me together — just know how I treasure you.

ummer is about to end, and with it the most mellow time of the year. I’d like to leave this season with a gentle and accurate message that came from the internet and resonates with me: A newlywed young man was sitting on the porch on a humid day, sipping ice tea with his father. As he talked about adult life, marriage responsibilities and obligations, the father thoughtfully stirred the ice cubes in his glass and cast a clear, Between sober look on his you and me son. “Never forget BY LEAH S. Over the years, he became aware that his father knew what he was talking about. Inasmuch as time and nature carry out their designs and mysteries on a person, friends are the bulwarks of our life. After 70-plus years of life, here is what he, and you, and I will have learned: Time passes. Life goes on. Children grow up. They cease to be children and become independent. And to the parents, it breaks their hearts but the children are separated from the parents because they begin their own families. Jobs/careers come and go. Illusions, desires, attraction, sex … weaken.
