Town Man’s Best Friend Gets a New ‘Leash’ on Life in Heckscher Park BY DONNA DEEDY DONNA@TBRNEWSMEDIA.COM On Jan. 1, the Town of Huntington will begin a three-month pilot program to allow leashed dogs in Heckscher Park, subject to certain limitations. If the trial period is successful, the pilot will extend in threemonth increments to gather data from use of the park in different seasons. The program is the result of a town board resolution, sponsored by Councilwoman Joan Cergol (D), developed in response to a petition that circulated this past summer calling for better access to the park for dogs and their owners. Greenlawn resident Karen Thomas helped draft and circulate the successful petition campaign this past summer. “Over 2,500 dog owners have spoken and the Huntington board listened,” said Thomas. Cergol announced her position on opening up the park to dogs on a trial basis in a Sept. 5 Times of Huntington news article. The resolution she drafted was unanimously approved at the town’s Oct. 16 board meeting. “The relationship between dogs and humans continues to evolve, and it is becoming increasingly common to see dog owners and their canine family members together in public places,” Cergol said. “I am excited that we are about to extend this option at Huntington’s downtown signature park and look forward to our partnership with [the nonprofit Long Island Dog Owners Group] in ensuring the pilot program’s success.” LI-DOG is a nonprofit advocacy group looking to increase access for dog owners to public spaces. It’s president, Ginny Munger Kahn, was designated as the lead public education campaign coordinator. “Our job is to make sure all the dog owners know that it’s in their best interest to follow the basic guidelines,” she said. “Overall, respect other park users. That’s the key.” Specifically, this means keeping dogs

on a leash less than 6-feet long and under control. No retractable leashes are allowed, and people are limited to no more than two dogs per individual. People are also expected to clean up after their dogs once they do their business. People, Kahn said, are good with this part. “People have precedence over dogs on the path,” Kahn said. “Step off the path onto the grass as people pass by unimpeded.” Heckscher Park’s trails, which are more narrow than other town pathways, suggest that this is an important part of the guidelines to remember. Cergol formed an advisory committee

that includes representatives of her staff, various town departments, LI-DOG and the town’s Citizens Advisory Committee on Persons with Disabilities to create the educational program. The group has met twice and has developed program guidelines from those gatherings and individual conversations. The committee has so far planned to post signage at various spots in the park, including all the major entrances. A video to be aired on the town’s government access

Service Award Program to increase the monthly service award from $20 to $30 to further incentivize volunteer ambulance workers. Town Partners with MADD for ‘Tie One On’ Government officials, law enforcement members of Karen Holden’s family and MADD came together at the corner of Park Avenue and Pulaski Road where a wrecked car donated by Gershow Recycling has been placed to remind everyone about the dangers of drunk and distracted driving. “This is the season where people go to parties and everyone has a good time but people lose their inhibitions and unfortunately all too often get behind the wheel of a car,” said council member Mark Cuthbertson (D). “This is what makes this time of the year the most dangerous on our roads.” Last year 10,511 people were killed in drunk driving crashes, that’s 29 people killed a day or one person every 50 minutes. The sad truth is that every one of these deaths was 100 percent preventable. The car on display is a sobering reminder of what can happen when people drive drunk or distracted. People die and it tears families apart and changes lives forever. “We need to be a part of changing these

statistics,” Cuthbertson stated. “We have partnered with Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) to promote their public awareness campaign ‘Tie One on for Safety.’ This entails placing a red ribbon on your car door handle or your key chain or anywhere it will be visible to you as a reminder if you have been drinking, don’t get behind the wheel of a car.” If you know that you are going to be drinking: · Make a plan · Designate a driver · Schedule a car service or · Make arrangements to stay put and off the road. If you see someone at a party who should not be driving, save a life and don’t let them get behind the wheel. In response to a Nov. 20 TBR News Media article that uncovered that the Northport-East Northport school district was in violation of laws governing petroleum bulk storage, district officials announced at the Dec. 12 board meeting that they found a new bus depot and refueling location. “We have found an alternate location and the resolution would allow the school board to enter negotiations to finalize that work with the Cavay’s Building & Lumber Supply on Brightside Ave.,” Robert Banzer, superintendent of schools, said. Over the last several weeks, the district addressed its violations with the Suffolk County Health Department and officials there said that the site was reinspected without violations found. A separate resolution unanimously passed that would allow the district to utilize the fueling facilities operated by the Village of Northport for its bus fleet and maintenance. “We are still seeking other possible methods of fueling, including [reaching out to] some of our other municipalities. We have reached out to them and they are considering it, “ Banzer said. “By January we should have this [relocation] in motion, if not sooner.” Other highlights of the meeting include the board approving the subcommittee’s

recommendations in hiring PW Grosser Consulting, a Bohemia-based environmental firm to begin framing a soil testing plan for the Northport Middle School. The firm would recommend soil testing parameters to the district beginning sometime in January. The subcommittee members said that the firm could come do an initial walk-through of the building as early as later that week and would do other work throughout the winter break when students aren’t in school. The announcements were made just days after students were again evacuated from several classrooms in the middle school after children were overcome by fumes. A parent of a middle school student who spoke at the meeting said that children should be moved out of the school while testing is being done. “We are very concerned, we need an answer ourselves on how this [testing] is going to happen,” he said. “The safe alternative is that they [the students] leave the school, and you do your testing.” Subcommittee member Lauren Handler said as a group they haven’t discussed that as an official topic but agreed that the kids shouldn’t be in the building when they don’t know if its safe. No vote was formally conducted on that issue. State and county health officials have stated that the school board has jurisdiction over air quality at the school and not health officials. The subcommittee plans to meet each Monday, beginning Jan. 6 or 13 of next year.

Spencer Recognizes Scouts’ Contribution to Community

Suffolk County Legislator William “Doc” Spencer (D-Centerport) was proud to recognize three exceptional young men, Aidan Sebesta, Nicholas Lembo and Lucas Cusati, as they celebrated their Eagle Scout Court of Honor on Saturday, Nov. 30, at the East Northport firehouse. “The life skills, leadership qualities, perseverance, and character developed by these gentlemen as they worked their way up to achieve the rank of Eagle Scout will stay with them for the rest of their lives,” stated Spencer. “We thank them for their commitment to bettering our community, and wish each of them continued success in all future endeavors.” The three Scouts, who are all members of Northport Boy Scout Troop 41 and graduates of Northport High School, completed the following service projects: Sebesta’s service project involved building two large wooden cabinets for the Sweetbriar Nature Center in Smithtown that are being used to store supplies for rehabilitating sick and injured animals and as platforms for cages. To fund the project, Sebesta conducted

a car wash to raise money to buy supplies and negotiated prices and donations with local vendors. As a result of his excellent budgeting skills, Sebesta was able to donate more than

$100 in surplus funds from the car wash to the nature center. Sebesta is currently a junior in the Honors Program at Fordham University majoring in history.

For his Eagle Scout project, Lembo fixed the barn roof and overhang at the Lewis Oliver Farm in Northport, a place that holds special significance in his heart as he spent much time there as a child visiting the farm and feeding the animals. When Lembo discovered that the barn was in disrepair, he immediately knew that it would be the focus of his service project. The reconstruction took many hours of planning, fundraising and construction. In addition to stabilizing the structure of the barn, Lembo added gutters, created a space for chickens to scratch, and painted the beams. Lembo is currently attending Lehigh University where he is majoring in computer engineering. Cusati sourced his love of music into a service project to entertain the local veterans residing at the Northport VA Medical Center. Over a period of a year, he organized and led a group known as SQUADRON 154, made up of more than 75 Northport High School chorus, orchestra and band students, to provide a series of 12 concerts to entertain veterans with the gift of music. Cusati is a Rose Scholar at Cornell University studying computer science.

Connolly’s Broadway Debut BY LILY SCARLETT DESK@TBRNEWSMEDIA.COM Talented children often aspire to become a Broadway actor. But Makayla Joy Connolly, 12, of Northport has realized her dream. She’s playing Lily Potter, the youngest child and only daughter of Harry and Ginny Potter in the hit “Harry Potter and the Cursed Child.” Showing at the Lyric Theater, this is Makayla’s Broadway debut. Her acting experiences, though, are every bit as magical and enchanting as the play. Makayla’s passion for the theater began at the age of 8, when she joined the Northport Community Theater Group. Somewhat frightened of performing in front of an audience, Makayla was satisfied to work backstage. As time went on, Makayla worked through her fears. At the suggestion of Betty Silva, director of the Northport Community Theater, she auditioned for their upcoming production of “Annie” and landed the role of Molly. The experience was so rewarding, Makayla wanted to continue her newly found love. So, she went on to audition for “The Little Mermaid” at the John Engeman Theater in Northport where she secured the role of Flounder. She continued to play a variety of roles at the theater, including the Balloon

Girl in “Gypsy” and JoJo in “Seussical.” After seeing her performances, Kimberly Connolly’s (Makayla’s mom) friends saw her innate talent and stage presence and suggested she get an agent for Makayla as fast as she could. So, on the train into New York City, they went to meet with talent agent Jackie Reid at Lil Angels Unlimited. “The minute I saw Makayla I knew she had the it factor. I just fell in love with her at the audition and signed her right away,” Reid said. “With her personality, drive and talent, this is just the beginning. I have been working in this business for more than 30 years and she has one of the best voices of a child actress I have ever heard. I’m proud to be working with her.” Makayla has also performed at Carnegie Hall, sang the national anthem on the USS Intrepid and at college football games. She was also one of the youngest top finalists in Long Island’s Got Talent. “Makayla has come so far in the past three years,” her mother said. “She fought through disappointments and setbacks during her career but with determination, hard work and persistence didn’t stop pursuing her dream: Broadway. We can’t be more thrilled for her that she has realized her dream.” The work of a young actress is never

done. Makayla continues to juggle school work with tireless hours of learning lines, auditions and rehearsals. She recently performed an opening number at the Red Bucket Follies at the Amsterdam Theater for Broadway Cares/Equity Fights Aids,

where casts of 58 Broadway and offBroadway shows performed for a lightspirited competition at the follies. Makayla and the other performers helped to raise over $5.6 million for the cause at the Dec. 9 and 10 event.

Winter Wonderland on Ice Draws Crowd

Town of Huntington Supervisor Chad A. Lupinacci (R) welcomed 1,500 kids of all ages to ice skate for free at the Town Winter Wonderland Free Ice Skating event at Dix Hills Ice Rink Saturday, Dec. 14. Attendees were encouraged to bring unwrapped toys for underprivileged children. Attendees were greeted with holiday lights and decorations, selﬁe stations and an opportunity to take a picture with Santa Claus. Activities included free skate rentals, an ugly sweater contest, free holiday ornaments and an opportunity to win prizes. The rink’s food concession stand was open for business and gave away free hot chocolate. The crowd was entertained with rink-side live holiday music performed by the Huntington High School band ensemble, Huntington High School chorus, and Stimson Middle School Teen Tones chorus. Northport’s Sophia Yearwood stood atop the scoring charts draining five treys, two field goals and a free throw for a team high 20 points. Kerry Dennin netted 13 points and Danielle Pavinelli banked 10. Raiyah Reid led the way for the Wolverines with six field goals, a triple and two free throws for 17 points. There’s something brilliant about a letter. In fact, one of the best ways to test one’s writing skill is in the art of correspondence. Try reading “A Life in Letters” by Eric Blair, aka George Orwell, to see the unique power of the written word. Each and every one of our readers letters has power and each and every word counts. Just like news stories, your letters might be capable of prompting change, or inspiring another individual, typically in 400 words or less. With that power, every letter writer also has a responsibility to readers, and we at TBR News Media would like to clarify just what is at stake when you send in a letter to us. As journalists, we are the community’s closest connection between people and government, covering news and events that impact people’s lives on the local level. We especially welcome letters that touch on recent articles, even if it’s something as seemingly benign as roadwork near your house or a neighbor down the road setting off fireworks well past July 4. We edit for A.P. style, which is the standard in most U.S.based news publications. If you were wondering why we only use a person’s last name after the first reference, for instance, that is why. It helps maintain coherence over the many thousands of words contained in each and every issue. But we also edit for length, libel and good taste. These last three items that have especially been a bone of contention for some of our writers. Lately, many of our letters relate to national issues and the policies of President Donald Trump (R) and include incessant squabbling between the two major political parties. We would never alter your opinion, but we do have an obligation to make sure the facts you cite conform with the truth. We ask that our writers provide sources or backup information with letters, so we can fact-check the information. We’ve received letters using derogatory nicknames for Trump, former President Barack Obama (D) and other legislators and political figures. We have done our best to edit out this potentially defamatory language. Some writers might disagree with this. But, we have also received letters berating other letter writers, and we have looked to soften that language to invite more civil discourse. Our view is the “Letters to the Editor” page serves as a form of public debate. Its purpose is to argue the issues, not personally attack an individual. Yes, please send us letters on what you think about the issues of the day, but when letters cross the line, they cheapen or even invalidate their arguments to knock at a supposed rival, or to drag people who live close to us through the mud. We make a conscience effort to fairly represent opposing views to avoid discrimination. In fact, we find it most interesting and useful when we include letters from people on multiple sides of an issue. The majority of letters we get today concern the national discourse, and are essentially a mirrored reflection of the tirades and proceedings we see from people who are supposed to represent the best of us, the majority of us. Let’s raise the bar. Instead of parroting the rhetoric of politicians and pundits, who regularly resort to insults, rely instead on the laws of logic and critical thinking. Analyzing arguments in the free marketplace of ideas is one hell of a responsibility. We the people hope we all take that responsibility seriously. Since accountability is the basis of democracy, let’s give it the gravity it deserves.

I am blessed to have excellent health insurance and pharmacy coverage, but I ache for those who do not. The cost of drugs in this country is out of control. Currently, Medicare cannot negotiate drug prices and current laws disallow any negotiation. Big pharma is able to set prices and

raise prices at will. This is inappropriate. It is time for a change. The Lower Drug Costs Now bill will allow Medicare to negotiate for lower prices. Democrats in Congress, through this bill, are standing up to big pharma. It is critical that this bill receives

support of local representatives. U.S. Rep. Lee Zeldin (R-Shirley) should be ashamed for having voted against it. It’s long past time that he step up on behalf of his constituents to support lower drug prices. Judy Black Shoreham

Russia’s Misinformation Is Influencing U.S. Russia is our enemy. Russia is carrying out a cyber war of misinformation against the United States. All of our intelligence agencies have said that Russia interfered in our 2016 election to favor President Donald Trump (R).

Russia is now spreading false information that Ukraine was the country that interfered in our 2016 election to favor then-Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton. Now we have U.S. citizens aiding Russia in spreading this false narrative,

Ukraine Did Not Interfere with Elections In the Dec. 12 article “One on One: Lee Zeldin Discusses Impeachment Hearings and More,” (available on tbrnewsmedia. com) U.S. Rep. Lee Zeldin (R-Shirley) states that it is “indisputable” that the Ukrainians interfered in the 2016 election. No, Mr. Zeldin, the Ukrainians did not interfere in the 2016 election. Russia interfered in the election, and is positioned to do so again in 2020. American intelligence agencies have confirmed that Ukraine did not interfere in 2016. The fictional narrative about

Ukraine’s interference comes from a disinformation campaign by Russian security services. Such unfounded claims, or conspiracy theories, about Ukrainian interference have seeped into Republican talking points and into Fox News and other conservative outlets. This serves Russia’s interests, not American interests. American intelligence officials recently informed U.S. senators and their aides that Russia had engaged in a yearlong campaign to frame Ukraine as responsible

for Moscow’s hacking of the 2016 election. Perhaps Zeldin could consult with intelligence officials before making false statements about what is “indisputable”. It is indisputable that Zeldin is wrong and is spreading fiction. Perhaps instead of spending his time tweeting insults at anyone who disagrees with him and cheerleading for Mr. Trump, Mr. Zeldin should focus his attention on Long Island and his constituents. No Such Thing as Partisan Data In my research lab, there’s no such thing as partisan data. Scientists are trained to study the facts, test the findings, and produce the most accurate information. Sometimes, the facts differ from what we thought going in, but our hypothesis doesn’t change the facts — the facts change the hypothesis, as we try to understand what’s really happening. Lee Zeldin’s recent interview with TBR shows at best a refusal to look at facts and at worst a willingness to lie to his constituents about the actions of the president. Zeldin repeatedly refused to answer the questions posed to him by the TBR editorial board, including when he was presented with the wellestablished facts regarding President

Trump’s solicitation of help from a foreign government while withholding congressionally authorized aid. His only response was that he disagreed with the premise of each question. Throughout the impeachment proceedings, the facts have been corroborated by career officials’ testimony and documents. The facts remain undisputed by the White House or the president’s allies, including Zeldin. These facts are uncomfortable for all of us. Nobody goes to Congress to impeach a president — but when a president’s actions are incompatible with democratic governance, it’s the only option. A representative should be able to look at the evidence and draw conclusions,

comfortable or uncomfortable, without regard to their own ideology. Time after time, Zeldin has shown he is unwilling to view issues with an open mind, put country over party, or hold power to account. While Zeldin has spent his time on Fox News attacking Democrats, he has refused to sign bills to restore SALT deductions or lower prescription drug prices. He has attempted to erode gun safety legislation, reduce safety protections for clean water, and decrease access to high quality, affordable health care. It’s time that we demand, as residents of Suffolk County, that our representative fight for us, rather than defend a corrupt president. Nancy Goroff Stony Brook

An Unusually Tasty Rubber Chicken Event

hey are called rubber chicken dinners for a reason. Much of the time, corporate events masquerading as social gatherings offer little in the way of ﬂavor, taste or entertainment. This one, however, had so much potential. A group invited my wife and me to attend a football game. The connection came through my wife, who interacts regularly with our hosts and received the invitation months D. None earlier. When we of the above read the invitation, BY DANIEL DUNAIEF we knew she could invite our son, although we also knew he had two midterms the day after the big

game, which meant that I could escort her. I have, on occasion, demonstrated a surprising nimbleness in jamming my foot into my mouth. Unintentional and harmless though the effort may be, I have worked hard to pull back on (a) sharing too many details, (b) making too many jokes and (c) asking anything about controversial topics. We walked into a suite, where our host immediately caught my wife’s eye and shook her hand. I’d met him several times and he graciously welcomed me as well, although I realize my decidedly unimpressive place in the world. My wife had given me a rundown of the people we’d likely meet, even as I tried to look over some of their shoulders to watch the football game occurring past the tray of appetizers, the plate of sliders, the collection of untouched cookies and the bowl of half-eaten popcorn. A woman whose name had made the list shook my hand and smiled at me. I waited the usual three seconds to see whether she was planning to bolt to chat with someone more

interesting, more powerful, taller, better dressed or more well versed in the world of football. After all, she was wearing a football jersey and, while my son can name the rosters of most teams because of his fantasy football acumen, I’m much more limited in this sport. She, however, kept looking me in the eye, encouraging further conversation. We described the lives of our children. That generally constitutes safe topics, so I was on terra ﬁrma. When I asked where she grew up, she said California until she went to high school on Long Island. I’m not sure why I asked because Long Island is truly a huge place, but I wondered what school she attended. She told me it was in Setauket and it was called Ward Melville. Wow, I replied, I went there, too. She said she was on the tennis team and we both remembered the name of the coach who had been there years ago, Vicki Goldfarb. My new acquaintance’s father, as it turns out, was a ﬁghter pilot who had

moved to Grumman when he became an engineer. It became a remarkably detailed conversation. She lived about a mile away from me for ﬁve years, until I graduated a few years ahead of her from Ward Melville. When she excused herself for a moment, I ﬁgured that I might have overplayed the conversation. At that point, I tried to get a closer look at the football game, until my wife and I started talking with our hosts about their family’s skiing adventures. As we started to leave, I once again found myself chatting with the Ward Melville graduate. She shared a few more compelling stories about her family and her life, including an adventurous trip to Green Bay, where her husband celebrated a landmark birthday in the snow and cold. This was, decidedly, not a typical rubber chicken event for me and one that I hope continues if we follow up and get together some time in 2020. And, in case you are wondering, I don’t think I committed any social faux pas.

college campuses? New Haven is not any different, neither is the University of Chicago and wherever there are universities adjacent to neighborhoods that are prone to crime. “As of Dec.8, there had been 20 robberies inside Morningside Park or on its perimeter this year, compared to seven in the same period last year,” wrote The New York Times. The article continued, “Since June, ﬁve people reported being robbed on or near the staircase at 116th Street and Morningside Drive, near the spot where Ms. Majors was killed.” Why, then, was the park not better patrolled by the New York City Police Department? That’s what compiling those statistics is for, yes? To send help where help is most needed? This is an issue the NYPD will have to deal with in coming days. The other metropolitan area tragedy at the top of the news at the moment is the slaughter of four innocent people in Jersey City Dec. 10 by, according to reports, a couple of heavily armed drifters. While those investigating the murders are not saying much while they work on the case, there seems little doubt that this was a

hate crime directed speciﬁcally against both the police and one segment of the population: Jews. Why do people hate? Particularly why do they hate strangers, people they don’t even know? It’s a question as puzzling as why people would ever want to kill each other. For bigotry to be so strong as to result in violence is unfathomable. For that matter, why conclude that just because people are different, they should therefore be despised? In fact, they might be thought of as more interesting for their differences. Which brings me back to my original thought. If everyone is praying for peace, why is there war? Why is there violence? Why is there bigotry? Why is peace so elusive? Is peace, real peace, impossible because of the makeup of humans? Will there always be a Hitler and a Stalin, a Napoleon, Vikings and an Attila the Hun? Still, let us pray for peace, however hard to imagine. Let us keep this idea alive before us as a goal someday to be realized. Let us work to make our world less violent, less ﬁlled with hate, less bigoted. Maybe the operative word is “less?” That we surely can do.

he year is rapidly coming to a close, and it is leaving us with impassioned thoughts. At this time, probably more than any other in the year, we pray for peace: “on earth peace, good will toward men.” Never in the history of the world were people more united than in this wish. dark, although it was only 7 o’clock on a Wednesday evening, Dec. 11. Ostensibly the cause was a robbery gone bad. Her death is a personal tragedy for her family, her friends, the neighborhood, the Barnard and Columbia communities and all New York City. I know. I’m a Barnard alumna and my roots are in New York. The murder tugs at my heart. I lived on the Columbia campus for two years, only a short block from the park. One thing I understood: Don’t go into the park at night. So I have lots of thoughts, lots of questions. Why was she there? Was she not told that simple fact? At the ﬁrst assembly of my entering class, the president of the college cautioned us about safety in the neighborhood, warned us where to walk and how to be safe. That was a different time, I acknowledge, over a half-century ago, when the city was a more dangerous place. But dark places in any city can be dangerous anywhere in the world. The president was trying to teach us urban smarts. Are the new students still getting that important message on many
