Harborfields High School seniors were recognized for their exceptional academic achievements, acts of citizenship and service at the school’s year-end annual senior awards ceremony May 22. to academic success during the entirety of their high school careers. In addition, Russo announced the other eight students who comprised the school’s top 10 graduates. The following are the top 10 students in the Class of 2018: Emma Johnston, Sarah Katz, Julia Spande, Jay Best, Justin Minerva, Gavin Small, Julianna Cavallaro, Liam Cordero, Erin Tucker and Rachel Scheff. A plaque with their names was added to the Wall of Scholars, which is affixed to the wall in the hallway outside of the high school auditorium.
Northport High School recognized 33 students from the Class of 2018 graduating with Academy of Information Technology certificates May 22. The AOIT is an interdisciplinary program recognized nationwide that prepares students for a career in information technology. It’s designed for students interested in the areas of computer science, video editing, web design, programming, computer networking, and computer security and forensics. In addition, the Northport AOIT coordinates an intern program for students entering 12th
grade, further adding to their preparation for the modern digital workplace. The ceremony included a keynote speech by AOIT alumnus Steven Dragone, Class of 2008, who is now working as associate director of operations in the office of undergraduate admission at Hofstra University, and Karan Sikka, a software engineer at Google. Each student received a certificate in recognition of their hard work and accomplishment. — SARA-MEGAN WALSH

Holocaust survivor joins Class of 2018 A lifelong dream has been made a reality for a Holocaust survivor who, after nearly 30 years educating others, can finally say he’s received his high school diploma. East Northport resident Mordechai Miller was given an honorary degree at the 103rd commencement of Smithtown High School West June 21, becoming a member of the graduating Class of 2018. The 87-year-old donned a blue cap and gown, sitting with his fellow graduates on the field to wait to hear his name called by Principal John Coady. “It’s very exciting,” Miller said upon hearing he was being granted a diploma. The moment was decades in the making for Miller. “Everything he’s wanted in life he’s been able to achieve, except for this,” said his daughter, Leah. “He’s really wanted this for a long time, but it’s not something you can ask for.” Miller was born in the village of Jablonna, Poland, in 1931. Due to the outbreak of World War II, he was only able to complete first grade before he and his family were forced to live in a Jewish ghetto before eventually going into hiding. They were liberated from the war front town, where they had taken up work as Polish refugees, by the Soviet army in January 1945. Miller moved to the United States in 1956 where he settled in Brooklyn. A self-motivated man, he started his own business selling used truck parts and eventually opened his own junkyard in Bay Shore after moving to East Northport in 1984. Since the 1990s, Miller has shared his life story as a public motivational speaker at hundreds of events, according to his daughter. For the past 10 years, he has regularly been a guest speaker in Christina Cone’s Holocaust and Genocide class at Smithtown High School West. “He will always start out by saying that he loves to come to school because he didn’t get a chance at an education,” his daughter said. The Holocaust survivor’s goal in sharing his life and experiences with students each year is to increase tolerance in the world. To honor Miller’s message of doing right by others, Smithtown’s staff decided to confer upon him an honorary degree. “As he was deprived of a formal education and was never awarded a high school diploma, it is our privilege to bestow upon him this long-awaited document,” the principal said. “We thank you for all your work with our students, sharing your experiences and congratulate you on receiving your diploma.” Miller was given a standing ovation by the students, parents and Smithtown faculty at the June 21 ceremony as he walked across the stage and accepted his degree. “He has always wanted this opportunity, and tonight they have made his dream come true,” his daughter said. While the school district has given out honorary diplomas before, Miller was the first be allowed to walk in the ceremony.

She participated in multiple clubs where she Kathryn Browne assumed mentoring and leadership roles, and also enjoyed involvement in both the varsity track and soccer. Browne will be attending Boston College in the fall, where she plans on studying nursing. Along with being at the top of her class, Elwood-John H. Glenn salutatorian Catherine Ordonoz-Reyes has been pursuing the family tradition of nursing throughout her high school career—and is a certified nursing assistant. Along with her rigorous dedication to excellence in her studies, OrdonozReyes has been an active member of her school and community. She has Catherine received academic Ordonoz-Reyes distinctions, such as the National Academy for Future Physicians and Medical Scientist Award of Excellence. She will be attending LIU Post on a full scholarship to study nursing. Aidan Forbes has been named valedictorian of Huntington High School’s Class of 2018. Sebastian Stamatatos is this year’s salutatorian. The spectacular pair has enjoyed exceptional four-year runs packed with academic and cocurricular success. “I am extremely proud to be named valedictorian,” Forbes said. “It is the culmination of years of hard work and I couldn’t be happier.” Aidan Forbes Forbes and Stamatatos both gave addresses at Huntington’s 157th commencement exercises June 22 in Blue Devil’s athletic stadium.

Across the Town of Huntington, hundreds of graduates stepped forward to receive their high school diplomas this week. Among the graduates are those who have excelled academically, achieving consistently high marks to rise top of their class to earn the titles of valedictorian and salutatorian.
“Aidan is an outstanding student and a very well rounded young man,” Huntington Principal Brenden Cusack said. “His years of hard work have paid off and I am so very happy for him. Sebastian is to be commended as well for this outstanding accomplishment, which apparently has become a family trait. Huntington’s top two seniors have captured the respect and admiration of their classmates and teachers. Their tranSebastian Stamatatos scripts are filled with the most challenging courses the school district offers. “Aidan and Sebastian have both achieved at the highest of levels academically and have taken complete advantage of all that the district has to offer,” Huntington Superintendent James Polansky said. “As importantly, they recognize the value of service and continue to represent our school community in the finest manner possible. It will soon be time for them to further share their gifts with the world beyond Huntington. I wish them and their families the heartiest of congratulations and all the best moving forward.”

Full Performance knowledge, skills, and abilities Good knowledge of Fire Department routines, functions, terminology of equipment and procedure; Good knowledge of English, spelling, and arithmetic; Good knowledge of ledger posting and bookkeeping practices, as well as recording and filing; Skill in speed writing or shorthand, and typing at a reasonable rate of speed; Ability to understand and carry out complex written and oral instructions; Ability to establish and maintain an effective relationship with the Board of Fire Commissioners, volunteer fire personnel, employees, and the general public; Ability to compose routine letters and memoranda; Should be proficient in using computers, utilizing Email, using word processing programs, and spread sheets; Must be proficient (after training) in utilizing the Fire District accounting software. We need to keep 2018 graduates on LI Hundreds of Long Island students have accepted their high school diplomas this week. We’ve sent them off into the world armed with the best advice and pearls of wisdom we have to offer. In doing so, we can’t help but hope this isn’t goodbye. The Class of 2018 students are each pursuing his or her own version of the American Dream. What defines that dream can vary greatly — whether it’s studying medicine at Stony Brook University, learning a trade or joining the military. The question we have to ask is this: When these students are envisioning their futures, how many picture himself or herself staying on Long Island? While parents and teachers are taking pride — and deserved pats on the back — in getting this year’s seniors through their first 12 years of schooling, it doesn’t stop there. The older generation and its leadership must continue to take action to transform Long Island into an attractive and affordable place for young adults to live. “We spend a lot of money educating our kids here,” Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone (D) acknowledged in his 2018 State of the County address. “Too many of them have left for other parts of the country, where they are helping to power their regional economies. We have to stop that.” For the first time in two decades, there is a glimmer of hope that the brain drain trend is starting to slow. The population of people between ages 20 and 34 living in Nassau and Suffolk counties has increased by 7.6 percent from 2010 to 2015 — for the first time since 1990 — according to the U.S. Census Bureau’s 2015 Population Estimates, as stated in a June 2017 report by the Long Island Association. LIA is a nonprofit organization that advocates for policies, programs and projects that benefit Long Island and support economic development and infrastructure investments. However, there’s still 100,000 fewer residents in the 20 to 34 age group on Long Island than in 1990. So, there’s still a ways to go in attracting and keeping bright, young professionals on Long Island. To this end, Suffolk County Legislature’s Presiding Officer DuWayne Gregory (D-Amityville) proposed legislation June 22 that would instruct Suffolk’s Department of Economic Development and Planning to create a pilot program to address the issues causing millennials to leave for less expensive areas. While there are few specific details available on this proposal, Gregory has pointed to other municipalities creating programs that help young adults with student debt purchase homes while still paying down their loans. This is but one step in the right direction. As the Class of 2018 disperses, their parents’ work shifts from helping with science projects and math homework to advocating for local change that will improve the quality of life young adults can expect on Long Island. Better entry-level job opportunities that offer competitive salaries without requiring travel into the city are needed, and more affordable housing and assistance to put the down payment on a house to help start a family are also important. Take a few days to rejoice and celebrate with the graduating Class of 2018, but there is much work to be done creating a brighter, more youthful future for Long Island.

Not all Trump supporters are the same
I am once again saddened and disturbed by the continuous drum beat of liberal bias that almost every week permeates the back pages of The Village Times Herald. The paper published a letter from Ms. Susan Blake in the May 31 edition entitled “How do we even begin a conversation.” In her letter she attempts to tell a story describing a photograph she took of a truck “completely adorned with bumper stickers” allegedly in support of President Trump. You should now presume that because she witnessed one offensive truck with unmentionable bumper stickers, that all the Trump supporters are guilty of vile and abhorrent behavior. In fact, I know of no one that drives through our community displaying bumper stickers that have no place on our roads. I have no doubt Ms. Blake witnessed such an abhorrent incident [she did send a photo — Ed.] but does that mean that all Trump supporters use indiscriminate behavior while driving through our community?
I get so tired of our liberal left attempting to portray themselves as holier than thou and in possession of the ability “to keep this country from falling into the abyss.” Really? When do you ever see a letter written by a confirmed liberal extolling the praises of our current president who in 16 months has accomplished more than our last president did in eight years? Our economy is roaring; our stock market is near an all-time high; our unemployment is at an all-time low; unemployment within the African-American community is at an all-time low; we have had some tax reform; and we have a nonpolitician in Washington who is attempting to drain the swamp and make America great again. All of the above with the continued obstructionism of Sen. Schumer and Congresswoman Pelosi. Our country has experienced eight years of probably the worst president in our history since Jimmy Carter. Yet, do we ever see a letter praising all Trump
has done in so short a period? Of course not. We are building once again the strongest military in the world to ensure our safety. Our military overseas is once again regaining the respect and fear of those who hate us and want to destroy our free way of life. We no longer have a president who bows on his knees to Middle Eastern dictators and attempts to curry favor with them by handing them our hard-earned cash. Isn’t it time to realize that liberals supported a flawed candidate, Hillary Clinton. C’mon folks, wake up and stop living in what you hoped would be. It didn’t happen, and you just have to move on. This country is better today than it has been in a long time and it is time. We finally have a man in Washington who is fearless and knows how to win. If you practice what you preach to Republicans, you will let him govern and stop the pointless rhetoric and hateful speech.

Marvel at letters from progressives
Recently I watched the latest riot, this one in Portland, Oregon. The Soros-backed anarchist group Antifa decided to attack an American prayer group downtown, but this time, for the first time, the clueless, masked baby SS mob, armed with projectiles and pepper spray took a beating. Must-see TV at its finest. This is the Obama legacy. A legacy of racial division, antiChristian/Jewish street warfare right out of the Alinsky playbook. During the eight years of Obama’s administration, the unbridled war on our police was the most violent since the Capone/Dillinger days. Antifa, Black Lives Matter and most of the prominent violent anarchist groups in this country are controlled from Chicago, Barry’s hometown. So as I sit here in Pleasantville, far from the madding crowd, I marvel at some of the letters appearing in this forum from
self-anointed “educated” and “progressive” types. Most entertaining are the letters from the aforementioned demographic who can’t resist calling the president “chump” or ruminating over what the president is “doing” to our country. Compared to who? A nasty unhinged commie from Vermont or a self-enriching, pathological liar named Hillary, who’s gone unindicted longer than Gotti and Capone combined. Unemployment is the lowest in 40 years, and I’m feeling good for the first time in 20 years. Anyone who votes along party lines alone, is a dimwit. Oh, Trump said the “p” word 90 years ago? Whoopdidoo. Show me a man who hasn’t said that word, and I’ll show you Liberace. There is now true hope. The massive damage done by Clinton/Bush/Clinton/Obama may indeed be survivable. Along with Reagan, Eisenhower
and JFK, Trump is on track to becoming one of the great presidents post-WWII. The most amazing thing about the 2016 election was not the defeat of Hillary; it was the fact that Trump beat 16 other professional GOPers for the nomination. War with Russia has been averted, the murderous invaders from the Spanish Empire are in deep peril, and Wall Street is off-the-charts hot. Only a communist, anarchist or brainwashed misanthrope will keep marching, marching to Shibboleth. I love President Trump, and the CNN/ NBC/Washington Compost provocateurs are withering under the weight of their own endless propaganda. irst of all, we’re going to need a big cake. No, I know you think most cakes are big and that most people’s eyes are bigger than their stomachs, but this one is going to have to be huge. You see, we’re about to celebrate an important birthday. Next week, it’s the 242nd birthday of the country, so we’ll need a place to put all the candles. So, what do we get for the country that has everything? Well, for starters, it depends on what you imagine By Daniel Dunaief represents the country. Is it the Statue of Liberty? The bald eagle? A baseball game? Mount Rushmore? The Grand Canyon?

Seriously, this is one huge country and we haven’t even discussed the last two states to join the union. Alaska is a gem, with vistas stretching as far as the eye can see, as shimmering spawning salmon make streams and rivers glow orange, while bears nibble here and there as cars and buses pass them along the sides of the highways. Hawaii reminded everyone this year that it’s a volcanic archipelago. It’s a magnificent and lush combination of majestic mountains, bamboo forests and striking cliffs. So, what would this great country of ours want for its birthday? Well, maybe it would want us, even for a day, to all get along. We are all Americans, we have all heard the stories about the forefathers who fought for this country, who defied the British, and who wanted what was best for them and, all these years later, us. Maybe it would want us to tidy up. After all, who doesn’t want to look
good on their birthday, right? We could clean up our yards, clean up our neighbor’s yard, remove trash from the area around the school, a place so many enthusiastic children recently abandoned for the start of the summer. Maybe we should take a moment to think about how we are helping ourselves, or others, reach the American Dream. We all want life to be better, but maybe we can encourage others to strive for, and reach, a dream that anyone from anywhere could reach greatness. We are not like Europeans of past centuries, who limited opportunities for success by class, gender or ancestry. The home of the free and the land of the brave is all about allowing anyone from any walk of life to reach their potential and, more importantly, to decide their potential. America is about celebrating youth. We are a young country, filled with hope for the future, unbridled optimism and joy.
Regardless of what politicians in Washington say, we are also a country that likes to laugh, even at ourselves. We have a great sense of humor. Need a laugh? Watch “Bridesmaids” or “Groundhog Day” — or if in the mood for something older, “Animal House.” We pull apart and then we come together. We speak with different accents, depending on where we come from or what part of the world our ancestors originally inhabited. When we come together, we are unstoppable, finding our best selves from the roles we play in companies, on teams, or in close-knit families that stand ready, willing and able to support each other through any challenge. Sure, we can hang the flag, eat a hot dog, have a barbecue and sing a few American songs to celebrate our country. But, hey, maybe we can also look for the best in each other and in ourselves as we again give hope to the notion that a rising tide of optimism, of cooperation, of compassion lifts all boats.
And by the time the movie was over, I believe there was an enriched sense of community among those in the room. As much as we want to know where we came from, we also enjoy a sense of belonging to a community. One viewer from farther away came up to me at the end and said he wished for that pride in his city. That particularly pleased me because we as publishers of the hometown paper have always sought to strengthen those ties. Strong communities can be a powerful force for good. They also want to get the latest local news by reading the local papers, which is not so bad for us. Making a film was a new experience. My eldest grandson, Benji, the director of “One Life to Give,” aspires to be a professional filmmaker as his career progresses, and as we saw he has already acquired many filmmaking skills in college, where he is now a senior. He also brought to us for this venture a remarkable hardworking and talented crew of young professionals in front of and behind the camera. Thanks to our local connections, which included local historical societies and carefully preserved sites, we were able to put together an authentic venue for the
shoot. The weather was wondrously cooperative, and actors and historic re-enactors of considerable skill joined the team. Local restaurants, costume outfitters, dry cleaners, scenery designers, makeup and special effects people and SBU, among others, made in-kind contributions. Muskets and cannons were procured and brought to the filming site, often among hilarious circumstances. One rule became obvious: No day would go exactly as planned. A number of generous local businesses helped us meet costs by agreeing to be sponsors, and for their help they received credits before and after the film. Their names will be seen near and far as a number of groups have asked to show the film. My major contribution was offering my house for the 15 young people and their equipment throughout the shoot. I can tell you there was not a clear view of floor or rug during those 16 days. It was great fun with high excitement but on their next film, the shooting of which starts in two weeks’ time for release next year, they will definitely stay in a hotel.
House full for our hometown movie

unday was a magical night. After a full year of work, we offered you, our readers and viewers, the initial screening of “One Life to Give.” Our first full-length film, the story is set at the beginning of the Revolutionary War more than 200 years ago, and is about Nathan Hale, Benjamin Tallmadge, George Washington and the events leading up to the founding of the Culper Spy Ring. The location for this screening was the 1,000seat Staller Center off Nicholls Road within Stony Brook University, and to my amazement and delight, we filled the By Leah S. Dunaief auditorium to the point where our general manager had trouble finding a seat just before curtain time. This full house by itself is a most gratifying testimony to your regard and to the pulling power of our newspapers

and digital media, especially competing as we were with graduation day at the local high school. It’s also a lot more. In these chaotic and divided times, I believe we yearn to understand our common origin as a nation and the history that we share. History after all is glue that holds us together and, to the surprise of many students who hate social studies in school, is also the series of fascinating stories about people, personalities and events that help define who we are today. And since our film is focused on local people and events, we share a pride of place. Our area has been dubbed the “cradle of history” because of its brutal occupation by the British, the activities of the spy ring and the military skirmishes during the war. Long Island, in fact, endured the longest occupation of any part of the colonies because its farms and forests, livestock and fish made up the unwilling breadbasket for the major British garrison in New York City. So viewers came to see the history and the authentic local scenes and events, and the familiar faces of many residents as they served as extras on screen. Also some were simply curious.

Eleven Elwood-John H. Glenn High School seniors committed to play the sport of his or her choice at the collegiate level. A special recognition ceremony was held in honor of the students’ hard work and dedication throughout their athletic careers.
