Asharoken incumbents get another term By VicToria Espinoza Asharoken is not shaking up its leadership in the coming year, as per the results of Tuesday’s village election. Mayor Greg Letica and Trustees Mel Ettinger and Laura Burke were all re-elected. Letica recieved 167 votes, Ettinger got 150 and Burke had 143. Ettinger said he is excited to begin another term for Asharoken. “I’m thrilled to have been re-elected together with Greg and Laura,” he

said in a phone interview Wednesday. “The three of us are looking forward to working with the other two trustees for another two years, and continuing to work on some of the issues facing our village and whatever new issues arise.” Letica echoed his sentiments. “I am very happy to be re-elected and I look forward to continuing to serve the residents,” he said. “And I also want to thank them for their support.” Burke could not immediately be reached for comment.

In Congressional race, Suozzi wants to fight status quo By Alex Petroski Tom Suozzi (D-Glen Cove) is one of five candidates vying for the Democratic nomination in the 3rd Congressional District to win the right to face off against Republican Jack Martins (R-Mineola) in November. The seat was previously held by U.S. Rep. Steve Israel (D-Huntington), who announced in January he would not seek reelection after 15 years in the seat. Suozzi will square off with Suffolk County Legislator Steve Stern (D-Dix Hills), former North Hempstead Town Supervisor Jon Kaiman (D-Great Neck), North Hempstead Town Board member Anna Kaplan and attorney Jonathan Clarke in the June 28 primary. Suozzi served as Nassau County Executive from 2002 to 2009 and mayor of Glen Cove from 1994 to 2001, but has been out of politics for about six years. He is a certified public accountant and is currently of counsel to Harris Beach law firm in Uniondale. He lives in Glen Cove with his wife Helene and their three children. In his time in office, Suozzi said he fought to root out corruption in state politics and was named environmentalist of the year by the New York League of Conservation Voters, a statewide environmental organization. The candidate spoke to voters from Kings Park last Thursday at a town hall at American Legion Post 944. He pledged to display two important traits to voters: a willingness to take on the status quo in politics and a desire to cooperate across the partisan aisle.

They see too many problems in their lives that are not being addressed in the political arena.” He vowed to take on corporations and

special interests that have a stake in government policies remaining status quo. A main topic of conversation at the town hall was affordable health care. Suozzi said he would be in support of a voucher program that would create a hybrid health care system, allowing taxpayers

to choose the best option for them, be it Medicare/Medicaid or a private insurance. In 2004 he fought to create a cap on local Medicaid expenses. Suozzi also said he believes an ideal candidate is a moderate one that doesn’t swing too far to either side of the issues. “To win a democratic primary you’ve got to go way to the left,” Suozzi said. “To win a republican primary you’ve got to go way to the right. So people end up in office who are at these two extremes and they won’t do anything in the middle to actually solve the problems. All they’re doing is yelling at each other. We have to figure out how we can get people of good will who actually care about doing these jobs, who also actually do something, not just get the job, but do the job, to come together and actually solve some problems.” Care for veterans was another issue raised by a Kings Park voter at the event. “I believe that the number one obligation that government has … is to take care of veterans,” Suozzi said. “We have to figure out how to create a program where there’s a transition from the armed forces back into society again and it has got to be made a priority.” Suozzi was also pressed about drug addiction on Long Island. He said he’d like to see addiction to substances like heroin treated more as a disease than a crime, with an emphasis on prevention at younger ages, rather than simply treatment after the fact.

Residents of Huntington who are looking for a new bite to eat should look no further than Del Frisco’s Grille. Opening this Friday, June 24, in the Walt Whitman Shopping Center, Del Frisco’s promises to be a comfortable, family-friendly spot with twists on classic American dishes. “We cater to such a broad audience,” Executive Chef Seth Barton said. “Yes, we are American comfort food with a twist, but you’ll see Mediterranean food on our menu, and Asian twists.” It is the first and only restaurant from the Del Frisco’s chain on Long Island, and there is something for everyone. The menu ranges from classic burgers with their signature “sloppy sauce” to appetizers like the cheesesteak eggrolls, which have a sweet and spicy chili sauce and honey mustard drizzled over them. Popular entrees include prime beef short rib stroganoff with pappardelle noodles, prime ribeye and filet mignon. Everything on the menu is made fresh in-house, which Barton said is one of the most important parts of the restaurant. “We get our fresh seafood in daily; we’re

trying to get the best quality out there possible,” Barton said. “That’s one thing we really pride ourselves on.” Aside from lunch and dinner, the grill also serves brunch on Sundays, which includes items like red velvet waffles, chicken and waffles, crab Benedict and a do-it-yourself Bloody Mary that comes with multiple sides, including green beans, pickles and more. The menu includes weekly features, a rotating daily dish and various handmade cocktails, such as the signature VIP cocktail, which is made with only two ingredients — pineapple and clementine vodka. The new spot holds about 300 guests indoors and has a private dining area that is available for parties. There is also an outdoor dining area on the patio that can hold at least 35 people. The location where Del Frisco’s Grille sits had been empty for more than a year, the only vacated eatery spot in the mall. Staffers said they can’t wait to get to know and become a part of the Huntington community. “[We’re] super excited,” Barton said. “Everybody in this area that we’ve met with has been welcoming with open arms.”

Northport fireman honored for work against cancer in community BY VICTORIA ESPINOZA One Northport man has dedicated much of his time to bettering the lives of those around him. John McKenna has been living in the village for 43 years, and has served the community through the village fire department since 1986, and organizing local St. Baldrick’s events for the past 15 years. “There’s no place like home,” McKenna said of the area. “Northport has everything anyone could ever want. There’s no reason to go anywhere else.” McKenna said the camaraderie in the department has been one of his favorite parts of working there — he calls it his second family. “All around the country they are called fire stations, but here in New York, they’re called firehouses,” he said. “There’s a reason for that. We’re all brothers and sisters here.” The Northport native said he’s loved doing something he enjoys, with people he enjoys, for the good of the community. Throughout the years, he also said he’s enjoyed attending

the annual clam bakes at Asharoken Beach, and the Northport Firemen’s Fair where “we get to see our neighbors face-to-face on the best of circumstances — normally when we meet, things are not so good.” Aside from dedicating his time to the fire department, McKenna has also been instrumental in the founding and success of St. Baldrick events on the North Shore. St. Baldrick’s Foundation is a not-for-profit organization that raises money to help find cures for children with cancer. St. Baldrick’s events involve participants raising money for shaving their heads. In 2001, McKenna said he stumbled upon an article about a young Northport girl, Nicole Apollo, a cancer survivor, whose family was trying to raise money to pay for her treatment for acute lymphoblastic leukemia. He said he started looking into that form of cancer, since he had never heard about it before, and soon discovered the St. Baldrick’s organization. He then called his friends who own Napper Tandy’s Irish Pub in Northport, and with the help of his brothers at the firehouse, helped

In that first year, 107 heads were shaved. Since then, McKenna said he has helped shave more than 650 heads a year, and has assisted in raising more than $6 million. “It’s such an enthusiastic event,” McKenna said. “On the sad side, I don’t know how many children and families in treatment I’ve met at hospitals [throughout this period], but on the joyful side, I don’t know how many people I have met that have beat it, that have moved on and grown.” After the first St. Baldrick’s fundraiser in Northport, McKenna said he was contacted by founders of the event, and asked to serve on the board of directors. He served on the board for eight years and currently holds the title of board member emeritus after terming out.

McKenna is also a past commander of the Sons of the American Legion in Northport Post 694 and has served in the Northport Fire Prevention Committee since 1987. For all the work he has done in his community, McKenna was honored by the Firemen’s Association of the State of New York last Monday, as the recipient of the 2016 Fire Service Community Achievement Award. This award honors a volunteer firefighter on the basis of their community service outside of their membership in their volunteer fire department. Although McKenna is being honored for his life’s work, he doesn’t want to slow down. “We can’t stop until it stops,” he said of his goal of working with St. Baldrick’s until cancer is eradicated.

Two hits in one day

On June 19, a 25-year-old man from Mildford was arrested after police said he hit a 2005 Nissan while driving a 2011 Nissan south on Route 231 in Dix Hills and then fled the scene. Later that day, police said he also hit a 2015 Honda while driving on Route 231, and fled the scene a second time. He was charged with two counts of operating a motor vehicle and leaving the scene with property damage.

A 40-year-old woman from Springfield Gardens was arrested on June 18 after police said she took four pairs of Versace sunglasses from Macy’s Backstage on Walt Whitman Road in Huntington. She was charged with fourth-degree grand larceny valuing more than $1,000 in property.

He then stole a Fitbit watch and removed nine rings from a locked display case at Macy’s on Walt Whitman Road. After he was arrested police said they also found heroin in his possession. He was charged with two counts of petit larceny and seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance.

Convicted rapist charged with young woman’s murder By Elana Glowatz A young woman’s alleged murderer has been arrested in Suffolk County, more than two years after police found her dead body in a nature preserve, shocking her community. The Suffolk County Police Department announced on Thursday that they had charged 28-year-old Fernando Romualdo with second-degree murder in the case of Sarah Strobel, whose lifeless body was found in the Froehlich Farm Nature Preserve in October 2013. Attorney information for the suspect, a Huntington Station resident, is not available on the New York State court system’s online database. Romualdo was incarcerated at the Mohawk Correctional Facility in upstate Rome on an unrelated charge but is now being held without bail at the county jail in Riverhead. According to the New York State Department of Corrections’ inmate database, he was sentenced to three years for second-degree rape last year, with his earliest possible release date in March 2018. The 23-year-old murder victim, herself a Huntington Station resident who lived just a few blocks away from the defendant, was discovered at the Huntington nature preserve, near West Rogues Path, shortly before 9 a.m. on Oct. 3, 2013. Police said that day that a person walking on a path in the park noticed the body of an adult female off to the side of the path and called police. Authorities later identified her as Strobel and deemed her death criminal in nature. Shortly after she was found dead, a friend of Strobel’s said the walking path was a favorite hiking spot of the victim. That friend, Taylor Friedman, helped organize a candlelight vigil to pay tribute to the young woman, a 2008 Walt Whitman High School graduate in the South Huntington school district. “Sarah was a free spirit and a wise soul,” Friedman said at the time. “She lived

In addition to Strobel, the community remembered the lives of 18-year-old Maggie Rosales, who was found stabbed to death, lying on Lynch Street in October 2014, and 25-year-old Danny Carbajal, who was shot in the head outside his home in July 2014. While a Huntington Station man has been prosecuted for Rosales’ murder, Carbajal’s death remains unsolved. The deaths spurred community efforts to make Huntington Station a safer place.

We found prescription medication laying out in the street a couple of months ago.” What he said horrified him, though, was the large bomb-making manual found, which included hand-written and printed out material. “That scares the hell out of me,” he said. “That takes it to a whole new level.” While Sini cannot say what pointed the department in the direction of the home, the commissioner explained it took time to get probable cause to establish a case, and tips from residents have been instrumental in much of the police’s recent findings.

He said more than 600 tips on drug homes and drug spots in local communities have come through the 631-852-NARC hotline, which Legislator Sarah Anker (D-Mount Sinai) was instrumental in launching. “We need to use our most vital resource, and that is the residents of Suffolk County,” Anker said. “We need to have a safer environment, but we need that information from the public.” To report any information regarding the suspects from the Mount Sinai case, call 800-220-TIPS. “We took two dangerous individuals off the street,” Sini said. “The fact that this is in our backyard is very concerning. Black sea bass fishing season to start earlier By Victoria Espinoza Black sea bass is back on the table, as of June 27. After public outcry for an earlier start to summer sea bass fishing, the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation announced this week the season will start 19 days earlier than the previous July start date. The DEC has blamed federal regulations and management for the reasons behind originally closing the fishing season during June, despite plentiful numbers of bass. “In spite of abundant populations, DEC is being forced to alter the commercial and recreational fishing seasons in order to meet federal quotas,” Acting Commissioner Basil Seggos said in a statement. “By allowing for an earlier June opening, we’re trying to strike the best possible arrangement for the recreational fishing community.” U.S. Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-NY) called for modifications to the summer fishing period last week at an event on the North

Shore, speaking against what he called “inflexible” and “outdated” federal regulations for black sea bass fishing. And Long Island fishermen said the July start date was hurting their livelihood. “It’s a disaster for conservation and the economy,” said James Schneider, a boat captain in Huntington. “It’s crushed us.” Schneider is catching other fish since the last black sea bass season ended on May 31 and said he has been forced to throw back the bass he inadvertently catches. Those die shortly after, he said, further contributing to a loss in potential profits. Some fishers were also upset that Connecticut’s black sea bass season, which opened on May 1 and runs through Dec. 31, allowed fishermen to start earlier than in New York, as they share a body of water in the Long Island Sound. Sean Mahar, the DEC director of communications, last week acknowledged fishing got off to a slow start in New York. Through May 21, only one-third of the May quota had been harvested, “with approxi-

mately 42,000 pounds [still] available on May 21,” Mahar said in an email. “However, the harvest rate increased dramatically the last week in May,” and the DEC had to receive more population data before deciding to open the summer fishing season earlier than July. Although fishermen like Schneider can now get back to bass fishing earlier, the DEC has also increased the minimum size of the bottom feeders caught by 1 inch — making the new minimum length 15 inches — and reduced the daily possession limit from eight fish to three. However, that lat-

ter change will only affect the fishing season through August, so fishermen can have up to eight in September and October, and 10 in November and December. According to the DEC, it also considered a July 8 opening with a five-fish limit, but anglers opted for the earlier start with a three-fish limit for a longer season. The DEC also said the federal government’s population assessment of sea bass has caused scientists to “exercise extreme caution when determining harvest limits,” which has forced New York to reduce sea bass harvest despite an “abundance of fish.” The Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission is one of three organizations that jointly manage black sea bass fishing, by determining the quota for sea bass each year. The quota this year was set at about 189,000 pounds. Kirby Rootes-Murdy, that commission’s senior fishery management plan coordinator, said obtaining accurate population data on black sea bass poses a challenge because black sea bass are a hermaphroditic species, meaning they change sex from male to female. “The reproductive life history characteristics … of black sea bass make it difficult to develop an accurate abundance estimate, ultimately limiting the ability to develop reliable catch limits,” he said in an email. “Assessment scientists are working hard to develop models to address these issues facing black sea bass management.”

Who’s on top of 2016 classes PeoPle Harborfields

Sabrina Qi and Trevor Jones are the valedictorian and salutatorian, respectively, of the Harborfields graduating class of 2016. Qi was named a scholar in the 2016 National Merit Scholarship Program, she received the National School Development Council Academic Growth & Student Leadership Award and was presented the Daughters of American Revolution Good Citizenship Award. She is enrolled in six Advanced Placement courses and one college-level language class. She is a member of the National Honor Society, Global Justice Club and Science Research Club. Qi will attend Duke University in the fall with plans of majoring in biomedical engineering and biophysics. “I think Harborfields has truly prepared me for the future with all the classes I have taken,” Qi said. “As long as you take the classes that you are interested in, the teachers will prepare you for what you want to study in college.” Jones is also enrolled in six Advanced Placement courses at Harborfields and is the class president. Among his high school experiences, he interned for U.S. Rep. Steve Israel (D-Huntington), worked at the Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory and North ShoreLIJ to conduct medical research, and he served as the student representative at the board of education meetings. He will attend Boston College on a full scholarship with plans to major in biology or public policy. “I am going to miss the community,” Jones said. “The classes and teachers are great, but at the end of the day, what I am going to miss most are my peers, my friends and the environment we have here.”

Northport

Ian Buitenkant is this year’s valedictorian at Northport High School, with Emily Labruna following as salutatorian. Buitenkant is a National Merit Commended Scholar and has been the math department’s Student of the Month. He interned at the Academy of Information Technology last summer with SeniorNet, an organization that teaches computer skills to retired and elderly people. The valedictorian enrolled in 10 AP courses throughout his four years and was awarded the AP Scholar with Honors in 2015.

He is a member of the high school Mathletes Team, and his junior year had one of the highest cumulative scores among all participants in a multiweek competition sponsored by the Suffolk County Math Teachers Association. Outside of the classroom, he can be found at a chessboard. He was named the Suffolk County High School chess champion in 2013 and is also the president of the high school Chess Club. Buitenkant was also on the high school varsity tennis team for three years. He plans to attend Stony Brook University’s Honors College, majoring in computer science as a member of the Honors Program and hopes to become a software developer in the future. Labruna is an International Baccalaureate Diploma Candidate. She spent two summers at Cornell University and Johns Hopkins University through the Packard Scholars Program, and her participation in these programs led her to want to continue neuroscience research in college. Labruna was a math department Student of the Month and is a National Merit Commended Scholar. She is a member of the Mathletes, the Academic Team, varsity softball, the National Honor Society and Schools for Schools, where she has helped raise money for the education of children in poverty. The salutatorian also has a third-degree black belt in Jiu-Jitsu. She will be attending Johns Hopkins University with a major in neuroscience.

Harborfields third-graders for ‘goin’ buggy’ As a culmination of their science unit on metamorphosis, third-grade students in Diane Brown and Noreen Paccione’s classes at Thomas J. Lahey Elementary School in Harborfields school district put on a musical performance of “Goin’ Buggy.” For the unit, the third-graders received caterpillars to observe as they transformed into butterflies. They learned about the life cycle of caterpillars and the different features of the bug as it under-

goes metamorphosis. For the show, students dressed as various insects and bugs, including butterflies, grasshoppers, bees, ladybugs, spiders and fireflies. Through the use of memorized rhyming phrases, catchy songs and dance movements, students shared the story of bugs and insects uniting together with the goal of convincing the White House to pass their “Bugs’ Bill of Rights.”

obituaries Huntington High School’s valedictorian and salutatorian are Rachel Carpenter and Olivia Stamatatos, respectively. Carpenter is the president of Huntington’s branch of National Honor Society and has participated in all eight of the high school’s drama productions. “When I first moved here four years ago, I had no idea I would have been in the position I am in now,” she said. “I have the people of Huntington High to thank for my growth and success.” Stamatatos is president of the school’s branch of Italian National Honor Society, a member of the Mathletes, wind ensemble and Tri-M Music National Honor Society. She also takes dance lessons at the Lynch School of Ballet in Huntington. She plans to pursue a degree in biochemistry “in order to gain a deeper understanding of underlying factors that contribute to the curative properties in natural substances.” She credited the staff at Huntington. “The teachers of Huntington High School have not only provided me with a high quality education, but have also built strong relationships with me and have always made me feel welcome,” she said. — VicToria ESPinoza Photos from respective school districts

Dorothy Prochilo, 84, of Northport, died on May 31. She was the beloved wife of Louis; loving mother of Helen Maley (Neil), Nick (Inken), Linda Murphy (Arthur) and Michael; cherished grandmother of Lisa (Bill), Amy, Jason (Stephanie), Kristin, Brian, Michael (Bobbi), Sarah and Amanda; and dear great-grandmother of William, Kyle, Jake, Logan, Ryan, Evan and Savannah. Patrick J. McNelis Sr., of Boynton Beach, Florida, died on May 30. Fighting for cleaner water: County Executive Bellone

Your gut is probably right American leaders in recent years have often spoken about the U.S. having a hostile political and social climate; a climate in which people are not tolerant of others’ views and in which disagreements sometimes degenerate into verbal or physical assaults. Certainly many of us have encountered such instances or felt the sting of another person’s unprovoked hatred at some point in our lives, perhaps in the form of blind political opposition, religious intolerance or racial prejudice. And there have been times when an ideology has endangered our personal safety, such as when Dylann Roof killed nine people at a historic black church in Charleston or when Omar Mateen opened fire at an Orlando gay nightclub, murdering 49 and injuring dozens of others — and killing many LGBT people’s already tenuous sense of safety. Or when pro-Nazi materials were uncovered in a Long Island home alongside numerous weapons and a manual on how to make a bomb. The Nazis did not go away with the end of World War II; the disgusting, disturbing views of Adolf Hitler have lived on in people throughout the world, whether they specifically support the swastika or simply have similar ideas and values. So it’s hard to say whether two brothers who were arrested after authorities with a search warrant seized framed photos of Hitler, Nazi flags, and books on white supremacy — as well as guns, drugs and other items — from their North Shore home last week, were always Hitler fans or just persuaded by the recent U.S. social climate. Whatever the case may be, it’s important more than ever to be vigilant and to speak out when our gut tells us something is wrong. Mateen had been an aggressive person throughout his life and had made violent threats before, according to media reports. Some incidents were reported at the time and others not until our nation was picking up the pieces after he exploded at Pulse. Maybe things could have been different if more people around Mateen had the courage to speak out when he said troubling things or displayed violent or unstable tendencies. Suffolk County Police Commissioner Tim Sini said community tips helped authorities ahead of their raid last week at the brothers’ Mount Sinai home. One neighbor described knowing something bad was going on because of a brawl outside the home, cars coming and going at all hours and prescription medication found in the street. And that was not the first time neighborhood callers helped catch dangerous criminals in Suffolk, or anywhere else for that matter. Please, don’t be afraid of being wrong or sounding prejudiced. If you get a bad feeling about something, if you suspect something strange is going on, it probably is. Call the police — they are encouraging it — and help us keep our families and friends safe.

I applaud the TBR News Media for its support of efforts to protect water quality. As I have stated, nitrogen pollution in our water is public water enemy number one in Suffolk County. We know the impact it has—harmful algal blooms, closed beaches, decimated wetlands which leave our low-lying communities at risk from storms like Sandy, and impacts on our water supply which come from the aquifer below our feet. And we know the cause of this nitrogen pollution, which is the fact that 360,000 Suffolk County homes—nearly three out of four—are unsewered. But it is not enough to understand the problem, my job as County Executive is to propose and implement solutions. We have begun to make progress, including securing $383 million in funds from Governor Cuomo to expand clean water infrastructure and the new Center for Clean Water Technology at Stony Brook University, which will focus on innovation and the development of new technologies. But, in order to make critical progress, Suffolk County needs a stable, recurring revenue source dedicated for clean water infrastructure to halt nitrogen pollution by implementing Suffolk County’s comprehensive plan which includes helping homeowners remove old cesspools and in some places connect to sewers or install advanced on-site treatment systems. I had proposed putting a referendum on this November’s ballot to give voters the right to decide on adding a mod-

est fee to some of the lowest water bills in the nation to create such a fund. Unfortunately, like so many things, this issue has become mired in partisan politics and the people will be denied that choice this November. I appreciate the paper’s support for my proposal and advocacy for me to move forward and enact it unilaterally — “Water issue drops after proposal is poopooed,” June 16. However, this proposal requires New York State enabling legislation, and absent that, it cannot move forward. Even if that were not the case, I believe that this issue is sufficiently important that we must hear from the voters. Unlike those who stalled this proposal, I am very comfortable putting this issue in the hands of the voters. Suffolk County voters understand the threat to our water quality and they are willing to be a part of

the solution. I also want to make it clear that while we will not make as much progress as I would like to see as quickly as I would like to see it, we will continue to advocate. I will also continue to reach out to everyone, including those who opposed this proposal and solicit their ideas on how we can make progress on this issue or how we can strengthen the proposal. Clean water should be the birthright of every Long Islander and we will tackle this crisis together and reclaim our water. We know the problem, we know the solution, we have the will, we have the plan. We need to let Suffolk County residents decide if they want to invest in protecting our water quality for themselves and generations yet to come. Steve Bellone, Executive Suffolk County

Resolutions for the presidential election fight W e’ve got hot summer nights on the horizon. Come on, it’s an election year. In thinking about the days ahead of heated debates, accusations and counter accusations, I made some resolutions I’d like to share: • I resolve not to get too caught up in politics. No, seriously. I’m not going to count the days — 138, but who’s counting? — before the election. • I resolve not to study a single By Daniel Dunaief political poll between now and Nov. 8, which is, as I mentioned but we’re not going to talk about, 138 days away. • I resolve I will not watch too

Or, maybe, a movie I’ve seen 20 times, like “Bull Durham” will be on TV and I’ll just have to watch that scene one more time when the players come to the mound to discuss wedding gifts and cursed gloves. • I resolve not to focus on the number of times either candidate calls the other one a liar. If they do, however, I resolve to imagine that candidate adding, “liar, liar, pants on fire,” to add some levity to the accusation. • I resolve not to worry too much that one of these two people whom I don’t particularly like will be president. Seriously, we’ve got all these people eager for power and these two are the best we can find? Not everyone wants to be president, but doesn’t this seem like the perfect time for a dark horse to throw his or her hat in the ring? • I resolve to avoid listening to pundits. I don’t want to hear how you absolutely think your candidate

won the debate and the other candidate completely lost the debate, the election and his or her mind the other night. Can you imagine two pundits watching everything you did in a day? Pundit 1: “Oh, he totally nailed that plaque on his teeth. He won’t need to brush his teeth for a week after a performance like that.” Pundit 2: “Are you kidding? Do you think he gave the molars any attention? I’ve spoken to the molars and they are feeling neglected. I have a way to brush that would fight for every tooth and not just the ones on top.” My only pundit exception is David Gergen: He’s smart and funny, has a deep authoritative voice and he’s really tall, so it looks like he’s observing everything from on high. Besides, in the early 1990s I met him, not to name drop or anything, and he actually listened carefully to a question I asked. • I resolve to do 10 push-ups every

June solstice: The day the sun stands still A s I sit at my desk, typing this column, I am enjoying the longest day of the year, June solstice. It will not get dark until almost 9 p.m., and the June light makes our world sparkle. Recently we have been living through some of the most beautiful days with temperature and humidity in the Goldilocks range: not too hot and not too cold. It is also the first day of By Leah S. I conjure up cherries, watermelon and corn on the cob; then there are ice cream, lemonade, lobster rolls and backyard barbecues for lots of socializing. Lest

you think that all I fantasize about is food, there are those luxuriously lazy days reading at the beach or at the pool ... and oh those sweet summer nights. Time seems to slow down a bit and we get to relax amid less structure in our lives. There are other reasons to be happier when the days are longer. Because we are phototropic beings, the presence of sunlight is important to us, more so for some of us than others. Many people suffer to varying degrees from seasonal affective disorder during the winter, when the days are shorter. Natural sunlight is a freely available mood enhancer, causing us to produce vitamin D, which in addition to helping with the absorption of calcium, also affects our levels of serotonin and melatonin and hence our feelings of satisfaction. When there is little sunlight, some people can suffer from depression. Light therapy, with specially designed lights and vitamin D plus melatonin supplements can combat SAD to a degree, although no one really knows why some are susceptible.

time I hear one of the candidates, in an advertisement or during a TV or radio news program, use the word “fight.” I figure if they argue that they’ll fight for me, I might as well fight for my own fitness. Maybe I’ll do 20 sit-ups every time I watch them shake their heads in frustration when describing the ridiculous and calamitous choice on the other side of the aisle. • I resolve to think of the two candidates as the leaders of their packs on a middle school playground. Each time one of them is emotionally wounded and levels accusations against the other, I will imagine that they are just going through a difficult phase in their political career and that they’ll be OK once they get to high school. • Finally, no matter what, I resolve to remind myself that the Constitution guarantees us checks and balances. That means, regardless of the final “winner,” other leaders can protect all our interests.

Stonehenge, that mysterious megalithic structure in England, was clearly built to mark the solstices for the stones are lined up accordingly to receive the sunlight (there were some 12,000 people in attendance this year). Oops, I didn’t mean to get so carried away with technical stuff. Nonetheless, here’s another bit of trivia: This year the full moon — otherwise known as strawberry moon — coincides with the June solstice we are enjoying. Not since 1967 has that happened, apparently, and it will not happen again until 2062. See how special it is to be alive today!

All hail the national champions! Infinite Tucker grabs gold in 400 hurdles and relay By DesIrée Keegan Huntington’s 4x400-meter relay team had a target on its back all season. After being indoor national champions in the winter, and then garnering league, division and state titles, the pressure was on once the squad stepped out onto the national stage last weekend. The boys may have been nervous — especially after finding out they weren’t the No. 1 seed — but head coach Ron Wilson gave them words of encouragement, and once they lined up to compete, he could tell by their faces that they meant business. “I could see that they had the same facial expressions they had at the state championship, the same facial expressions at the national championship back in March,” he said. “There is a certain look they each have where they don’t really communicate with one another, but get mentally ready to compete. Can we dominate? That was the big question that we asked ourselves — and we did.” The Blue Devils’ fantastic four won in 3 minutes, 10.93 seconds, at the New Balance Nationals Outdoor championship at North Carolina A&T University in Greensboro Sunday night, setting a New York State record, knocking down the previous one which had stood for 50 years. The team also garnered the fastest time in the United States for 2016 in the event, and broke the national record of 3:11.6 set in 1966. The time easily eclipsed the school and county marks. The finish ended a long campaign exactly the way the athletes wanted it to. And the boys especially wanted to do it for senior Infinite Tucker, who garnered a national medal in the 400 intermediate hurdles just an hour and a half before competing with his team. “We all sat together before the race and talked about how it’s our last hurrah and we all wanted to do it for him because it was his last time running with us, and running for high school,” junior Kyree Johnson said. “We all just stepped it up a little bit, tried our hardest and that was exactly what everybody did.” Junior Lawrence Leake, as per a suggestion from assistant coach Eli Acosta, was switched to the first leg of the race, moving junior Shane McGuire to the second. Leake admits he was nervous, but said the coaches helped him get mentally ready to compete. “They always have a positive attitude, give words of encouragement before races, and always reassure me that I’m capable of whatever I put my mind to,” he said. Wilson told Leake and McGuire that if the boys each finished in 48 seconds, the title could be theirs for the taking. Leake didn’t break out of the box that well, taking a bad step off the block, but quickly regained his stride and finished the first 200 in 23 seconds, which was right on

After finishing the second 200 in 25 seconds, he passed the baton to McGuire, who said he went to the line super nervous, but didn’t want to let his teammates down. “When I got the baton, I went out quick,” he said. “I ran 23 in the first 200 and I was still kind of in the back, so when we hit the last straight away I saw the other teams died out and I sprinted as hard as I could to give it to Kyree.” Wilson said once the two legs finished in their target times, with both boys earning new personal bests, he knew the race was won. “I already knew it was over,” he said. “Kyree and Infinite are not going to let anyone deny them the top spot on the podium.” Johnson also knew the national championship was only seconds out of reach. “When I saw Lawrence run a really good leg and I saw Shane picking it up, I had a feeling that we were going to take it,” he said. “I was relieved. When I got the baton I just gave it my all. Just to go down there with all my friends and being able to compete with the people that I’m very close with was a great experience. Everything we accomplish together will stay with us forever. It’s not like a season thing. We have a friendship that has turned into a brotherhood.” And that brotherhood is what helped them pull it out, as the team topped their best record by five seconds. “We wanted to make the last time we all ran together special,” McGuire said. And they did.
