Dozens of Huntington residents gathered in the shadow of Constitution Oak last Friday to declare the intent to fight for the human rights of immigrant children across Long Island and the nation. More than 100 residents gathered June 15 to protest President Donald Trump’s (R) immigration policies at the Huntington Village Green Park, near the intersection of Park Avenue and Main Street. Many carried signs reading “Families Belong Together” alongside the Spanish translation, “Familias Unidas, No Divididas,” while others imitated children crying out for their parents calling out to passing pedestrians and drivers. “We are all disturbed and outraged with this administration’s new policy of separating children from their parents, parents whose only crime is to bring their family to safety,” said Dr. Eve Krief, a Huntington pediatrician who founded the nonprofit group Long Island Inclusive Communities Against Hate. “We demand an immediate end to this horrendous, cruel and unjustified policy. In early April, U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions announced a zero tolerance policy for immigrants who cross the border illegally, which means they can be arrested and prosecuted. There have been 1,995 children taken from 1,940 adults at the border from April 19 to May 31, according to reporting by the Associated Press.
SEPA Mujer representatives thank Huntington residents for showing their support for immigrant women and their families. Victoria Hernandez, an outreach coordinator for SEPA Mujer Long Island, a nonprofit organization that represents immigrant women, called for her neighbors and community members to take action against Trump’s policies. She suggested calling and writing to elected officials, as well as signing SEPA Mujer’s online petition at www.sepamujer.org. “We have to take action to prevent Jeff Sessions from allowing this violence against women and children from occurring,” she said. “For the children, please, for the children

take action.” An immigrant couple with their young son from the Huntington area stood in the crowd, arms wrapped around each other as Hernandez spoke. The family was in court days earlier pleading their case for asylum, according to Huntington Rapid Response Network volunteer Renee Bradley, and will know within the next four months if they’ve been accepted or face deportation. “They fear they could be injured or face certain death if forced to return to their home country,” she said, declining to release
more specific details. Bradley works with other members of the Huntington Rapid Response Network to provide immigrant families with legal services and support as they face legal process and get settled. It is one of eight such groups across Long Island associated with Jobs with Justice, a Washington D.C. nonprofit that fights for equal worker’s rights, that provides immigrants with referrals to trusted immigration lawyers and free services, translation services, accompaniment to court dates and other social support. Bradley said she is aiding several asylum seekers with their cases. “A lot of people are being caught up in a very wide net that’s all about MS-13, and MS-13 is being used to demonize the entire immigrant population,” she said. Dr. Steve Goldstein, president of Chapter 2 of New York State’s American Academy of Pediatrics, said that the separation of children from their parents and detention can have life-long health impacts from the toxic stress it causes. Goldstein said it can lead to chronic anxiety, predisposition to high blood pressure, and cause detrimental changes in brain function and structure citing research done by the Center on the Developing Child at Harvard University. One doctor shared his personal story of making his way to the United States as an illegal immigrant from Columbia with the

A 17-foot World Trade Center steel beam in Cold Spring Harbor, more than 35 miles from New York City, stands as a solemn reminder of those who died in the 9/11 attacks. The Cold Spring Harbor Volunteer Fire Department officially dedicated its 9/11 memorial in Fireman’s Park, directly across from its headquarters at 2 Main St., in a June 16 ceremony. More than 2,750 people were killed in the terrorist attacks, including 42 residents from the Town of Huntington. “We will never forget those who perished on 9/11,” said Thomas Buchta, chairman of the fire department’s 9/11 Committee. “We will remember the sacrifices of those who rushed into the building to fight the fires, to rescue those who were trapped, and the thousands of people who simple went to work that morning and never returned home.” Two fire department members, brothers Dan and John Martin, are following in the footsteps of their father, Peter Martin, who died on 9/11. Peter Martin served as a lieutenant in the Fire Department of New York’s Rescue 2 in Brooklyn. He was 43. “He left behind his wife and two young sons, but he also left behind a legacy,” Huntington Supervisor Chad Lupinacci (R) said. “He loved his occupation and left a record of how many fires he fought over the years and many stories to tell.” Martin also served as a volunteer firefighter in the Miller Place Fire Department, where he lived with his family at the time. “While our grief recedes with time and our lives move on in different ways and directions, our resolve and the memories of love friends,
co-workers and family will never wane,” said Cold Spring Harbor Fire Chief of Department Daniel Froehlich. The brothers both served as members of the 9/11 Committee, which has worked for more than two years to erect the monument. In May 2016, the 17-foot by 4-foot artifact from Tower One’s 62nd floor was transported from where it was stored at John F. Kennedy Airport out to the Town of Huntington Recycling Center for safekeeping while plans for the memorial were finalized. Volunteers started constructing the memorial in the fall of 2017, featuring the nearly 18,000-pound beam in a shape reminiscent of a cross being lowered into the ground Sept.

Three saplings grown from offshoots of the Callery pear tree that endured the 9/11 attacks, called the Survivor Tree, were planted around the memorial with a plaque to explain their significance. “When you look at it, don’t forget the anguish and loss, but don’t forget about the other things this symbolizes, the strength and resilience of spirit,” said Greg Cergol, husband of Huntington Councilwoman Joan Cergol (D) and master of ceremonies. “Those are the things that unite and define us as Americans.” The keynote address was given by U.S. Congressman Tom Suozzi (D-Glen Cove) who recalled his own desire to help in response to 9/11 in his position as mayor

Forgiveness matters. Our friends, our families and our communities matter.” After a moment of silence was held for the 9/11 victims, the Martin family rang the bell of Cold Spring Harbor Fire Department five times each in four intervals. It’s part of a long-held tradition in the fire department that signals the last alarm of a firefighter who has answered his or her last call.
NY Senate looks to rename stretch of Jericho after Commack fireman New York State legislators are looking to honor one of Commack’s bravest by renaming a road he frequently traveled in service to his community. New York State Sen. John Flanagan (REast Northport) announced June 13 that the state Senate has approved legislation that will rename a portion of Jericho Turnpike in honor of Commack resident Christopher Raguso, who lost his life earlier this year serving our nation in Iraq. The legislation, which Flanagan sponsored, will affect a 7-mile stretch of Route 25, from East Deer Park Road in Dix Hills east to St. Johnland Road in Smithtown as the “Lt. Christopher J. Raguso FDNY-CFD Memorial Highway.” “The renaming of this roadway will serve as a reminder of the service and dedication of Lt. Raguso to all who travel through this area. While the word hero is sometimes overused, it is a truly fitting description to the life of Lt. Raguso who lived a selfless life of dedication to others,” Flanagan said. “It is my hope that this honor helps to express the deep appreciation our community has for his
brave service.” Raguso was one of seven members of New York’s 106th rescue unit killed in the line-of-duty March 15 when an HH-60 Pave Hawk helicopter crashed while carrying out a mission in support of Operation Inherent Resolve, an American-led mission to defeat ISIS in Iraq and Syria, according to the U.S. Department of Defense. In addition to serving in the U.S. military, Raguso joined the Commack Fire Department in 2000. He served as captain of Company 2 before stepping up as lieutenant of Company 4, located off Kings Park Road. Raguso was posthumously bestowed the rank of honorary fire chief based on a unanimous vote of the Commack Fire Department’s membership March 16. The 7-mile long stretch of state roadway that will be renamed in Raguso’s honor includes the site of Commack Fire Department’s main headquarters, located at 6309 Jericho Turnpike in Commack. Raguso was also a 13-year veteran of the FDNY, where he served the majority of his career with Ladder Company 113 in Brooklyn. He rose to the rank of lieutenant and was stationed with Battalion 50 in Queens at the

He referred to legislation approved by Westchester County lawmakers in March that limited the information
the county shares with federal immigration authorities and bars employees from asking about a person's citizenship in most circumstances. Spencer said he believed other Suffolk lawmakers would support such a bill. “You want the perfect recruiting tool for groups like MS-13, here it is,” said the Rev. Marie Tatro, with the Community Justice Ministry at the Episcopal Diocese of Long Island. “Rob children from their parents, put them in cages and treat them like animals — they will be wounded and broken forever.” Tatro said several Long Island churches and religious organizations are springing into action to help immigrants affected by offering them sanctuary, providing them with safe haven from Immigration and Custom Enforcement officers. “There are angels of mercy working tirelessly all across Long Island to provide help,” she said. “We are all in this together, we will, and we must learn from history.”

Huntington church finds tapping solar energy cost prohibitive A Huntington Station church recognizes that the Bible says God made light and it is good, now if only they could afford to reap the sun’s benefits. Bethany Presbyterian Church is one of many houses of worship with an interest in harvesting solar energy, but many are finding the upfront costs are too high. In 2017, the church financed an audit of its electric system and insulation in an effort to increase efficiency through NY Renews, a statewide advocacy group for clean, renewable energy, Pastor James Rea Jr. said. While it reduced the congregation’s electrical bill by 20 percent, according to Rea, the congregation is interested in taking it a step further. “We would do solar, but we just can’t afford it right now,” Christopher Sellers, an elder at Bethany Presbyterian, said, noting the church is still paying for the energy audit. While renewable energy proponents point to community solar initiatives, where the output from a solar farm is shared among multiple buildings, there is still a large upfront cost and requires a significant amount of space to build the solar farm according to Ryan Madden, a sustainability organizer for Long Island Progressive Coalition. “We need solutions like community solar,” Madden said. “Our version of community solar takes the form of bringing in multiple organizations at the same time to bring down cost and creating locally driven solar campaigns.” LIPC partnered with Massachusettsbased company Resonant Energy, which

The initiative seeks to bring together nonprofits and churches for the intent of purchasing solar systems in bulk to help decrease the cost. PowerUP member organizations held a meeting with other interested groups June 13 at the Huntington Station church to advertise their plans. Madden said nonprofits have a difficult time when it comes to getting a solar hookup simply because of the issue of affordability. “They are not usually looked at by solar developers because its more expensive, or there are multiple decision makers in those
organizations that can stall a project,” he said. Other than cost, Isaac Baker, the copresident of Resonant Energy, said the nonprofits also have to contend with a lack of incentives to get into solar, specifically that nonprofits are not eligible for the federal solar tax credits that homeowners or for-profits can get. There are no current programs that financially help New York organizations transition from traditional electric to solar. “We’ve seen widespread adoption in single-family homes, but not so much in small commercial spaces,” Baker said. “[A large amount] of rooftop is available in any
state on small commercial buildings that are owned by nonprofits.” Some religious organizations on Long Island have already invested heavily in solar technology. The Sisters of St. Joseph in Brentwood made a big splash earlier this year when they unveiled their community solar system on their main campus. The 3,192 solar photovoltaic panels on their roof power 63 percent of the convent’s residential and office space on the 212-acre property. Karen Burke, the coordinator of land initiatives for the Sisters of St. Joseph, said that her sisterhood was looking to make the switch at other facilities. Baker said that if the PowerUP can bring together 10 different organizations, bulk pricing could bring the cost of solar panels down to $114,000 per building with 56 kilowatts of output. The initiative’s members were promised to save approximately $2,200 per year and a net savings of $212,000 in 25 years, according to Baker. The time line for the PowerUP initiative would have the nonprofits and churches getting technical assessments by the end of July, having installation done in September and the systems up and running by October. Billii Roberti, a member on the Town of Huntington’s Advisory Committee on Energy Efficiency, Renewables and Sustainability, said that Huntington should try to look to nonprofits to proliferate sustainable energy. “[This initiative is] bringing in people who are otherwise unable to take advantage of solar, people who are disenfranchised in a sense,” Roberti said. “The town is really into getting into as much solar as possible, so this is a great untapped resource.”
U.S. Coast Guard warns boaters beware of CO BY HERB HERMAN An “insidious killer” can creep up on boaters and homeowners alike without warning, lurking in generator exhausts, on boats, wherever there are products of combustion. Carbon monoxide (CO) is the killer. We’ve been warned a thousand times, but people continue to get sick and die from this odorless gas. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, at least 400 Americans die from CO poisoning every year from engine and non-engine consumer products. More than 20,000 people visit the emergency room, and some 4,000 are hospitalized. Carbon monoxide gas is odorless, which often goes undetected, striking victims caught off guard or in their sleep. When the gas builds up in enclosed spaces, individuals who breathe it can be poisoned. This is particularly true on a boat. Everyone should learn what they can do to protect their family from the dangers of CO: Install and maintain CO alarms inside homes and on boats to provide early warnings of CO; Install CO alarms in a central location outside each separate sleeping area and on every level of homes; Use portable generators outdoors in well-ventilated areas away from all doors,
windows and vents. Low to moderate CO poisoning is characterized by headache, fatigue, shortness of breath, nausea and dizziness. High-level CO poisoning results in mental confusion, loss of muscular coordination, loss of consciousness and eventually death. Symptom severity varies depending on the level of CO and duration of exposure. There are numerous documented cases where swimmers near the exhaust of boats have succumbed to CO poisoning. A particular tragic case occurred when 7-year-old Sophia Baechler, who was seated at the rear of her parents boat while in operation, died of CO poisoning after only a relatively short time. Minnesota is the first state to formally recognize the dangers of CO poisoning by requiring CO detectors and warning stickers on motorboats. The new CO law, Sophia’a Law, is named after her. Be aware that CO can remain in or around boats at dangerous levels even if the engine or other nearby boat engines are no longer running. Be alert to the fatal consequences that have befallen others. This is one more thing to think about while boating. It is recommended to test smoke and CO alarms at least monthly. And it’s not a bad

Though they can make a party more festive, Mylar balloons can also cause power outages when they get loose and come in contact with electrical equipment. The distinctive metallic coating on Mylar balloons conducts electricity. Because of this, when a Mylar balloon comes in contact with a power line, it can cause a short circuit. Harborfields’ Gavin Buda first Suffolk player selected to both spring all-star games BY DESIRÉE KEEGAN DESIREE@TBRNEWSMEDIA.COM Gavin Buda’s first word was “ball.” “True story,” the Harborfields dual-sport standout athlete said. “I’ve been playing sports as far back as I can remember.” Baseball was his first love, he said, signing up for every team he could play on. He played for the varsity team from freshman through senior year of high school, also competing on high-level travel teams and tournaments in other states. “It just seemed my path was set to play baseball in college,” he said. But during his sophomore year, he decided to try out for the junior varsity football team with some of his friends. The team went undefeated, and the wide receiver was hooked.
“There was a feeling I got playing football that I never felt playing baseball,” he said. “This bond that is created between teammates that only happens in football — the knowing that you have each other’s backs. That feeling made me think if I work hard enough, this is the sport I’d like to play beyond high school.” He never gave up on either sport, spending three days training for football and the other three for baseball. He said winters were intense, spending time indoors at batting cages while also gearing up for the fall football season. Buda this month became the first Suffolk County athlete to play in both the Rawlings Blue Chip Prospects Grand Slam Challenge and Empire Challenge football game. Buda said he had no idea the history he’d made at the time he was selected. “From a young age you could tell the kid was super athletic — he stood out among his peers, and from there he put in a ton of hard work to really hone that and continuetostayaheadofthepack,”said Harborfields baseball coach Casey Sturm, who coached Buda since he was in seventh grade. “He was a special player, and what really stood out at the end of his tenure wasn’t even so much what he did at the plate but his defense in the outfield and ability to pitch were huge.” In Suffolk County’s 5-4 loss to Nassau June 8 at St. Joseph’s College, Buda tossed a baseball for what might be the last time. The pitcher and outfielder took over on the mound in the bottom of the fifth and
retired the side in order. “To end my high school baseball career being selected to play alongside players that were drafted to the MLB or heading off to colleges like Vanderbilt to play baseball is just awesome,” Buda said, but he joked if he let up a home run he might not have been as happy. “To get on the mound and face those guys one last time was a great way to go out and, luckily, I did pretty good.” A week later, he’d put down his glove and bat to strap on some football equipment. In the Empire Challenge game, he made a 30-yard reception during a play he wasn’t even slated to be a part of. Knowing Northport quarterback Ryan Walsh, he said during the call in the huddle he told Walsh he could beat out the kid that was guarding him deep. Walsh trusted him, and Buda delivered. A step ahead of the defender, he said there was no way he was letting the ball drop. His two-year head coach Rocco Colucci said for him personally the moment was fitting. Being a teacher at Northport he’d coached Walsh on the junior varsity level. “This is why I coach football,” he said. “To see these guys grow, excel.” He said too it was a privilege to watch Buda shine the way he did. “Right off the bat I knew he was going to be a playmaker,” Colucci said. “His hard work showed. He was always looking to get better. He was very coachable — anything I told him to do, he’d do it. And because of that, [when other teams] put their best defensive players on him, he’d

He likes that type of best-on-best competitiveness in football, and there’s a lot of areas in football where he excels.” Buda will be taking his talents to Hobart and William Smith Colleges to join the football team, but said he’ll never forget where he came from. “There were some great players that came through Harborfields
before me, and there’ll be more after me,” he said. “I just hope that I did my part to help put Harborfields sports on the map. The Centerport Fire District is seeking applicants for the position of District Secretary-Treasurer. A Fire District Secretary-Treasurer has custody of all the records and books for the Fire District. They will attend and record minutes of regular and special district meetings, and receive and answer all correspondence. The Fire District Secretary – Treasurer also has the responsibility for the receipt, disbursement and recording of all monies belonging to the Fire District and performs related work as required. They may also perform additional duties as the Board of Fire Commissioners may determine necessary and request. Typical Work Activities (Include, but are not limited to) Take minutes at meetings, as well as type and post them; record and maintain ledgers, accurately post and reconcile accounting figures; Receive, disburse, and deposit monies for purchase orders; oversee and maintain the payroll and payroll withholding taxes; make reports to federal, state and local authorities regarding insurance, pension, disability rosters and injuries; issue reports on bank balances, and itemize receipts and withdrawals to the Board of Fire Commissioners; prepare monthly and annual reports of receipts and disbursements of District monies to be furnished to the Board of Fire Commissioners; prepare for, oversee, and administrate the annual Fire District Elections, Seminars, and the Installation dinner; and act as a liaison with the Fire District actuary and auditor. Full Performance knowledge, skills, and abilities Good knowledge of Fire Department routines, functions, terminology of equipment and procedure; Good knowledge of English, spelling, and arithmetic; Good knowledge of ledger posting and bookkeeping practices, as well as recording and filing; Skill in speed writing or shorthand, and typing at a reasonable rate of speed; Ability to understand and carry out complex written and oral instructions; Ability to establish and maintain an effective relationship with the Board of Fire Commissioners, volunteer fire personnel, employees, and the general public; Ability to compose routine letters and memoranda; Should be proficient in using computers, utilizing Email, using word processing programs, and spread sheets; Must be proficient (after training) in utilizing the Fire District accounting software. The Fire District Secretary-Treasurer answers to and is under the direction of the Board of Fire Commissioners, who are 5 elected public officials. The Board of Fire Commissioners appoints this position annually. An annual performance report will be provided. This job is part time. Queen Anne Emerging in the Victorian era, the style features inventive floor plans and decorative chimneys. Contemporary Unmistakably modern, this style has odd-sized windows and little ornamentation. Ranch Ranch homes are set apart by pitched-roof construction, built-in garages, and picture windows. Craftsman Full- or partial-width porches are framed by tapered columns and overhanging eaves. Regency The style borrows the Georgian's classic lines, yet eschews ornamentation. Creole A front wall recedes to form a first-story porch and a second-story balcony. Saltbox Its sharply sloping gable roof resembles old-time boxes used for storing salt. Dutch Colonial German settlers originated this style, which features a broad, barn-like roof. Second Empire This Victorian style features mansard roofs with dormer windows. Federal This style arose amid a renewed interest in Greek and
Roman culture. Shed A subset of the Modern style, Shed houses are asymmetric with sloping roofs. French Provincial Balance and symmetry define the French Provincial style, which has a steep hip roof. Shingle An American style that echoes Queen Anne, it has unadorned doors and large porches. Georgian With paired chimneys and a decorative crown, this style was named after English royalty. Shotgun Tradition says that a shotgun blast can trace a straight path from the front to back door. Gothic Revival English romanticism influenced this style, marked by Gothic windows and vaulted roofs. Spanish Eclectic This style has details from Moorish, Byzantine, Gothic, and Renaissance styles. Greek Revival Entryway columns and a front door surrounded by rectangular windows are characteristic. Split Level A Modern style, Split levels sequester living activities, such as sleeping and socializing.
International The International style exposes functional building elements, including elevator shafts. Stick Decorative horizontal, vertical, or diagonal boards are typical of this Victorian style. Italianate This style has symmetrical bay windows in front, small chimneys, and tall windows. Tudor Tudors have half-timbering on bay windows and upper floors, and steep cross gables. Monterey The Monterey style updates the New England Colonial style with an Adobe brick exterior. Victorian Built during the rise of the machine age, Victorian architecture incorporated decorative details such as patterned shingles. Suffolk leads Nassau to raise age to buy tobacco SARA-MEGAN WALSH
In light of current national events, a gnawing question surfaces — what happened to American values? Even the staunchest defenders of President Donald Trump (R) have to concede what’s currently going on at the borders of the United States is deeply troubling — the separation of parents from their children. The thought of just one child being separated from his or her family, crying for even a second, should be enough to deter any American with a conscience from supporting the president’s current policy. And yes, it is he and his administration’s to own, no matter what they want us to believe. The president has falsely claimed the immoral and inhumane policy of separating children from their parents who cross the border illegally was “a Democrat’s law.” It is not a law. Now it turns out, he is signing an executive order ending this loathsome policy. According to PolitiFact — a fact-checking site owned by the nonprofit Poynter Institute for Media Studies — the zero-tolerance policy that the Trump administration introduced in April, and one our president now admitted he has the power to change, has led to the massive uptick in children of all ages stuck in federal facilities without their parents. Attorney General Jeff Sessions and Chief of Staff John Kelly have publicly intimated the aim of the new policy is to deter people from seeking asylum in the U.S. Even so, that hasn’t happened. Illegal immigrants are so desperate to flee their countries, they are walking into this crisis as the lesser of two terrible evils. On June 15, federal officials announced that 1,995 children have been separated from 1,940 adults at the border between April 19 and May 31. Parents were referred for prosecution. Facts matter regarding the details of the new policy, especially as the White House and cabinet members like Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen cry “fake news.” It would be accurate to say the Trump administration has not explicitly crafted a policy calling for the separation of families entering the U.S. illegally. However, zero tolerance has created the problem, because illegally crossing the border was previously handled as a civil offense. This allowed families to be detained together, but now, as the felonies are turning into criminal charges, parents are being taken into police custody while children are frequently sent to a Walmart-turned-detention center in Texas, which grows more crowded by the day, and other places around the country. This is all indisputable fact. We as Americans have a responsibility to acknowledge this, politicians and officials. We encourage anyone as troubled by this as we are to reach out to your houses of worship to see if they’re taking steps to aide those being affected. Who are looking after the safety and welfare of these children? Donate your time or money to one of the more than 10 rapid response networks aiding Long Island immigrants, or organizations like RAICES, a Texas-based nonprofit that provides legal defense for individuals in immigration court. This is not our America, and this is not your America. This is not anyone’s America. We cannot remain silent. When government fails, it is up to us to stand up for one of America’s intrinsic values — freedom and the entitlement to basic human rights.

Congratulations to the leaders in Nassau County on raising the age to purchase tobacco products to 21. It was an honor to join all 19 county legislators and County Executive Laura Curran (D) June 4th as she signed the legislation. As the lead sponsor of the bill in Suffolk, which passed in 2014, I worked with advocates across the region who did the research, read the studies and made the case that tobacco use is the leading cause of preventable death, and that raising the sale age for tobacco products to 21 will prevent addiction and save lives. In addition to the public health benefits, the economics of this measure will prove to be valuable for Nassau County as well. While a miniscule amount of county sales tax revenue would be lost in the short-term, it pales in comparison to the billions of dollars in long-term health care savings that would otherwise be directed toward treating the ailments
caused by tobacco addiction. I am proud that Suffolk was the first county in the nation to raise the age and am thrilled that Nassau County has followed suit. As of May 25, over 310 localities across the nation have enacted similar legislation. Together, we are moving in the right direction.
Lastly, I want to pay homage to the late legislator Judy Jacobs, whom I worked closely with as she tirelessly advocated for Nassau County on this issue. Although she was not physically here with us today, her legacy lives on.

A list of Obama’s accomplishments In response to those people who disliked, and still dislike, President Obama and foolishly, endlessly and publicly accuse him of accomplishing next to nothing of value or importance during his two terms in office, let me list just some of the major, excellent accomplishments of his time in office. Here we go: • Obama rescued us from the Great Recession, cutting unemployment from 10 percent to less than 5 percent. • He initiated the Affordable Care Act, providing health insurance to more than 20 million previously uninsured citizens. • He ended the absurd Iraq war. • He terminated the existence of the vile, dangerous madman, Osama bin Laden. • He got the $787 billion American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 passed during the period of
recession. • He hugely helped our automobile industry in many ways. • He helped place our nation en route to energy independence by 2020. • He signed the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, thus permitting millions to live in the U.S. legally, escape deportation and obtain work permits. • He lowered the veterans’ homeless rate by 50 percent. • He got rid of the Bush era’s ugly torture acts. • He limited lobbyists’ access to the White House. • He established the White House Office of Urban Affairs. • He began improving relations with Cuba. • He ended media blackouts of war casualties. • He raised funds for the Department of Veterans Affairs. • He helped pass the Credit
Card Accountability, Responsibility and Disclosure Act of 2009. • He raised standards for the fuel efficiency of cars. • He greatly improved public school nutrition. • He helped regulate the financial status of the nation. • He helped fight pay discrimination aimed at women. • He nominated the first Hispanic to the Supreme Court. • He expanded embryonic stem cell research. • He repealed the “Don’t ask, don’t tell” policy of the military. • He phased out numerous, outdated war weapons. • He increased funds for science and research labs. • He helped, via legislation, physically paralyzed U.S. citizens. • He won the Nobel Peace Prize. I could continue for many pages.

Sifting through the memories
M
y family has become archeologists in our own home. After 12 years of collecting artwork from the kids’ classes in school, saving report cards and filing away binders from earlier grades, we are sifting through all that material, jettisoning or recycling what we don’t need. Some of the finds are so remarkable that they stop us in our sorting tracks. My high school daughter isn’t much of a morning person. She often prefers short sounds or gestures in the car on the way to school, rather By Daniel Dunaief than actual conversations that might require her to form words. As we were going through a pile

of material, we found a note from her nursery school teacher. She described a charming little girl who often takes a while to get going each morning. That description is so apt today that we realized how much of people’s patterns and personalities form early in life. Then, sorting further, we found papers from her spectacular first-grade teacher. A young woman with a soft voice and a determined style, her teacher brought out the best in our daughter, even early in the morning. Our daughter kept a diary in that class, in which she shared stories about the family’s weekend activities. Clearly, her brother was jealous of that writing, as we also found a diary from him in which he thanks her for creating a similar book for him to record his experiences. He shared his thoughts from the weekend, and the rest of the family readily wrote back to him. His sister also kept handwritten notes from her first-grade teacher. The letters are all clear and distinct, and offer a positive and supportive tone.

Her teacher wrote to her, without talking down to her. What a wonderful role model. This teacher, through form and content, offered a ray of sunshine to our daughter even then, which was probably why we kept the papers. These notes today take on a different meaning for us, as the teacher succumbed to cancer at a young age just a few years after our daughter had the privilege of being in her class. Our daughter was recently in a high school English class in which her first-grade teacher’s husband served as a part-time instructor. She shared some of these notes with him. He was delighted to take them home to his daughter, who was a toddler when her mother died. His daughter has particularly appreciated seeing her mother’s handwriting and feeling an indirect connection to the encouraging words she offered. We have also sorted through dozens — OK, hundreds — of pictures that have transported us to earlier memories. We have a photo of our 1-year old son

standing on the warning track at the old Yankee Stadium, bunched up in a winter coat on a December day. We also found numerous pictures of our son on baseball fields of his own, surrounded by younger versions of teammates who have stuck with him through the years, as well as of friends who have gone their separate ways — or have pursued other sports. Amid all the trophies from sports teams, we discovered certificates indicating that one or both of our children had been successful lunch helpers. We have unearthed old VHS tapes of movies we watched numerous times as a family, including a few Disney classics and a surprisingly amusing Barbie version of “The Princess and the Pauper.” In addition to sending us down memory lane, sorting through all the accumulated clutter has made the house seem so much larger, giving us room to add modern memories and memorabilia to our collection.
