Police: Dix Hills man murdered Suffolk County Police homicide squad detectives are investigating the murder of a Dix Hills man who was found dead in his residence June 11. Armindo Reis lived alone in the residence located at 22 Penn Drive. When neighbors could not get in contact with him yesterday, they called his son. When Reis’s son arrived at the residence at approximately 6:15 p.m., he found his father unconscious and called 911.
When 2nd Precinct officers arrived at the scene, they found Reis had sustained a gunshot wound. Reis, 74, was pronounced dead at the scene by a physician assistant from the office of the Suffolk County medical examiner. Detectives are asking anyone with information on this incident to call the homicide squad at 631-852-6392 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800220-TIPS. All calls will be kept confidential.

Town calls on governor for help with LIPA tax lawsuit BY DONNA DEEDY DONNA@TBRNEWSMEDIA On a soggy soccer field in the driving rain, more than 100 local residents — taxpayers, parents and students — attended a jointly sponsored press conference June 10 pleading for New York State Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s (D) support in fighting the lawsuit against the Long Island Power Authority. “Stop LIPA now, stop LIPA now,” they chanted in unison, holding bright red signs bearing the same sentiment. Looming overhead in the gray mist behind them were four smokestacks of the Northport power plant, the facility that has supplied the lights and energy mainly for Long Islanders for decades. LIPA annually pays $84.1 million in property taxes for this particular National Grid plant, which has helped pay for the primary education of generations of people in the Huntington community, particularly people in the NorthportEast Northport school district. Ten years ago, LIPA, a state-owned entity, opened a lawsuit
against the Town of Huntington to reduce its tax assessments by 90 percent — a proposition that the Town of Huntington and its school districts say would be devastating. Their desperation has become increasingly evident. “This runaway state agency — a public utility with unlimited resources — has come after the Town of Huntington and we are fighting back with everything we have,” Town Supervisor Chad Lupinacci (R) said. “LIPA refuses to negotiate. They have also engaged in a public disinformation campaign and spent the public’s money on advertising, pitting community against community. They paint the Town of Huntington as unreasonable when it is the Town that has offered LIPA several settlement proposals, all of which would save them in excess of $130 million in school taxes and over $210 million in total taxes over the course of the settlement term. LIPA stubbornly refuses to make a counteroffer and has never lowered their demands since I took office in January 2018. It is LIPA, not the Town of Huntington that is negotiating in bad faith — The Town of
Huntington cannot negotiate against itself.” LIPA has offered the following comment in response: “Our goal remains putting an unsustainable situation back on a sustainable path for the local community and the rest of LIPA’s 1.1 million customers. All customers are encouraged to visit www.TaxFairnessforLongIsland.com to receive the facts on how power plants are valued, as well as settlement vs. court action scenarios based on home values, video and audio explainers, and more information on how LIPA’s fair solution gradually transitions the local Northport community to a sustainable tax future while also waiving hundreds of millions of dollars in back taxes owed by the Town of Huntington.” The Northport-East Northport school district has offered similar sentiments to the town’s. “Now we face LIPA’s attempt to impose financial devastation to our district and school districts across Long Island,” a statement from the school district reads. “The damage that LIPA would impose on the staff, students and community of our district will make our schools unrecognizable. It should be noted that this financial threat is no longer contained to just a few school districts who host power plants. In January, LIPA announced that they would be seeking further reductions to the $289 million dollars of assessments to the 185 substations across Long Island thus creating a shortfall for school districts and communities islandwide.
The district is calling on Governor Cuomo to put education first and stop LIPA from devastating our schools and communities across Long Island.” Over the last decade, LIPA has challenged the taxes it pays on four National Grid power stations. LIPA reached an agreement that was approved in December, 2018 with the Town of Brookhaven for the Port Jefferson Power Station to cut its $32 million tax assessment by 50 percent over nine years. Suffolk County previously remained neutral in its position on LIPA’s tax lawsuit with Huntington, but, Comptroller John Kennedy (R) spoke on behalf of the county, outlining the county’s dire fiscal situation and the impact an adverse judgment would have on all Suffolk residents. “I’m not even sure we would have the ability to go into the market to raise the funds necessary to cover this potential burden,” Kennedy said. He also pointed out that the New York State Comptroller Tom DiNapoli (D) reports that Suffolk was under the most severe fiscal stress of any county in the state, in terms of fund balances, cash on hand, short-term borrowing and other issues. He urged LIPA to come to the table. The New York State Assembly is currently considering a bill that would prevent LIPA from collecting back taxes in the event that its tax case is successful. Town leads organ donor crusade BY DAVID LUCES DLUCES@TBRNEWSMEDIA.COM It’s as simple as signing a box on the back of your state driver’s license. Yet, New York ranks dead last in the country for the percentage of residents registered as organ donors, according to LiveOnNY, a nonprofit organization helping New Yorkers live on through organ and tissue donation.
The people in Huntington Councilman Mark Cuthbertson’s (D) office know firsthand how critical it is to participate in the program. Both Cuthbertson and his legislative aide Michele Martines have children that needed transplants. Their ordeal has motivated them to spread the word about the importance of signing the organ donation registry. “You can save a life,” said Martines.

In 2015, her 21-year-old son Christian received a heart transplant. He was diagnosed at age 18 with dilated cardiomyopathy and suffered cardiac arrest about a year later. Luckily for Christian and his mother, they ultimately received a call that they found a donor. Martines said many are not that lucky and die waiting for a donor. “We didn’t know at the time that the left side of his heart had failed and if he didn’t get the call for his heart he would have passed away that night.” Every 18 hours a New Yorker dies waiting for a donor, she said. “In New York it can take up to seven years to receive a kidney or liver transplant.” Cuthbertson also has been affected personally by organ transplants. His son, Hunter was diagnosed in 2016 with aplastic anemia during a precollege physical. The condition causes a failure of the bone marrow to produce the necessary amount of red blood cells. The chance of finding a perfect match in bone marrow with a relative is only 20 percent, but he found that his brother was a perfect match. In 2017, Hunter received a

bone marrow transplant. “I was elated when I learned he was a match, I dropped to my knees and I was crying,” Hunter said in a May 2018 Times of Huntington article. Despite efforts in recent years to improve the rate of organ donations, New York still lags behind the rest of the country. Congressman visits Normandy for 75th D-Day anniversary U.S. Rep. Tom Suozzi (D–Glen Cove) participated last week in a bipartisan congressional delegation to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the Allied D-Day invasion in Normandy, France. Suozzi and the members of Congress paid tribute and took part in ceremonies with President Donald Trump and French President Emmanuel Macron, to honor those lost during the battle of Normandy. “This experience was truly sobering and humbling. Seventy-five years later, the sacrifice made on the altar of Normandy must be remembered and revered. These brave souls demand that we earn the sacrifice they made by lifting up our freedom and our democracy and participating in our politics and government in a way that is more noble,” said Suozzi. While in Normandy, Suozzi visited the Normandy American Cemetery and Memorial in Colleville-sur-Mer and paid his respects to 21 soldiers from the 3rd Congressional District. Suozzi laid wreaths at the grave of Brig. Gen. Theodore Roosevelt Jr. (son of President Theodore Roosevelt), at the grave sites of 15 additional soldiers and at the Tablets of the Missing, which memorializes five soldiers who are listed as missing in action. At Gen. Roosevelt’s grave Suozzi held a brief ceremony, said a prayer of thanksgiving and spread a handful of dirt brought with him from Sagamore Hill, the childhood home of Roosevelt, a Medal of Honor recipient like his father. “At age 56, Gen. Roosevelt was the oldest soldier in the D-Day invasion and the only general to land by sea with the first wave of troops. Using a cane due to arthritis, Gen.
Roosevelt calmly urged his troops on amidst the incredible attacks. He survived D-Day but succumbed to a heart attack five weeks later,” said Suozzi. “Years later, Gen. Omar Bradley was asked, ‘What was the bravest thing you ever saw in your military career?’ Bradley responded, ‘Ted Roosevelt on the beach in Normandy.’” Suozzi also visited the small village of Sainte-Mère-Église, the first French village to be liberated by the Allies after D-Day. He met with the mayor, Jean Quétier, presenting him with a flag that flew over the U.S. Capitol. Sainte-Mère-Église is the sister city of Locust Valley. In 1944, Life magazine ran a photo of the wife of the mayor of Sainte-MèreÉglise placing flowers on the grave of Theodore Roosevelt Jr. The photo inspired residents of Locust Valley to adopt the village as a sister city, sending supplies to the war-ravaged village. Within a year, nearly 200 American cities had followed Locust Valley’s lead, adopting sister cities all over the world. In 1956, President Dwight Eisenhower officially formed Sister Cities International. Additionally, the congressman visited the Normandy Institute, an international educational residence with a mission to foster understanding and inspiration from the historic events of D-Day. He met with Susan Eisenhower, granddaughter of President Eisenhower, who presented both Suozzi and his colleague U.S. Rep. Jeff Fortenberry (R-Nebraska) with medals recognizing their efforts in promoting the history of D-Day and the Normandy invasion. -Compiled by Donna Deedy

State D-Day vets share war stories for 75th anniversary of Normandy invasion BY DONNA DEEDY DONNA@TBRNEWSMEDIA.COM Few D-Day veterans are alive today, but you can find three of them at Long Island State Veterans Home at Stony Brook University, where an award ceremony was held June 6 in honor of the 75th anniversary of D-Day and Operation Overlord, the largest amphibious operation in military history. One hundred World War II veterans were presented with the Governor’s Proclamation for the occasion, while Phillip DiMarco and Frank DePergola were decorated with the New York State Conspicuous Service Cross and Charles Cino was decorated with the New York State Medal for Merit. All three men participated in the Normandy invasion. Ninety-seven-year-old DiMarco was among the first wave of soldiers to storm the beach. “I’m just grateful to have survived,” he said. Two-thirds of his fellow troopers perished in the first 30 minutes of battle, according to information provided by the state. DiMarco’s group suffered from wounds, hunger, exhaustion and trench foot and survived on green apples and stagnant water doped with halazone tablets, a chlorine-based water purifier. “Our World War II heroes and heroines who came of age during the Great Depression, gave new meaning to the words, duty, service, sacrifice, courage and honor,” said Fred Sganga, executive director of the veterans home. “They answered the call to save the world from the two most powerful and ruthless military machines ever assembled, instruments of conquest in the hands of fascist maniacs.” War veterans often are understandably reluctant to talk about their horrific war experiences — it’s clearly too painful to relive. At their advanced ages, speaking also requires tremendous effort. Their stories live on through oral history and past memorials. But these men have stories to share from which history can be garnered. After 75 years, their summaries of what happened are often succinct and to the point. “There was this man who didn’t like Jews, and we got him,” 96-year-old DePergola said. DePergola was part of D-Day plus 10, meaning his troop arrived 10 days after the initial invasion. He was one of only four people to survive the war out of a platoon of 20, his daughter Jean Pulizzi said. In his campaign in Germany and Poland, DePergola encountered what they thought were abandoned buildings, only to discover upon entering about 30 captives: Jews, Catholics and Muslims. It was essentially a concentration camp. The stench inside, he said, was intense and unforgettable. The people, he said, were emaciated and wore black and white striped uniforms. “They were glad to see us,” DePergola said.

While on assignment from headquarters to retrieve maps, DePergola encountered two German soldiers in the woods in Metz, France. He took them captive with a German Luger pistol he had taken off another German officer earlier, since he forgot his issued rifle at headquarters, and returned to base with the captive soldiers. For this, he was awarded a Bronze Star, a military badge of heroism. For Thursday’s ceremony, DePergola insisted on wearing his favorite cap, which bears the Purple Heart badge, an emblem that recognizes war injuries. DePergola was shot in the knee during battle, but back then, he said, you remained on active duty. Cino was 18 years old when he stormed the Normandy beaches. He was responsible for transporting under the cover of darkness thousands of troops in a landing ship tank, or LST, an amphibious boat capable of landing on shore carrying tanks, cargo and troops. Cino, when he heard it was the 75th anniversary of D-Day nodded, shrugged his shoulders and shook his head. He could utter only one full sentence, “I was there.” Then he closed his eyes. Both DePergola and DiMarco, in addition to their experience at Normandy, fought in the Battle of the Bulge, the last major German offensive of World War II during the harsh winter in 1945. The D-Day ceremony included color guards and live musicians, who sang patriotic tunes and
played the bugle. About half of the veterans in attendance were in wheelchairs, and despite their limitations, tapped their toes to the music. Many were able to salute the flag. Some veterans wiped tears from their eyes, particularly when the room
sang the lyrics to “God Bless America.” During World War II, 900,000 New Yorkers went to the battlefield; 43,000 did not come home. The nation’s largest population of World War II vets live at Long Island State Veterans Home.

donors. The nationwide average is 56 percent. Since his surgery, Christian has taken up publicly speaking and advocating the need for organ donors to local schools. “We need to educate more people about organ transplants,” Martines said. “Christian goes out and talks to kids and tells them his story.” And the Town of Huntington has moved to the forefront of advocating the need for more donors on the registry. Beginning in 2018, the town began hosting a 5k Run to Save Lives to help highlight the need for organ and tissue donors in the state. Participants at this year’s event helped raise $11,000. All proceeds went to three nonprofits that handle and advocate organ and tissue donations: LiveOnNY, Be the Match and Team Liberty. Dr. Alan Gass, medical director of heart transplant and mechanical circulatory support at Westchester Medical Center oversaw Christian’s transplant surgery. He said there needs to be more education about organ donations. He wants people to know that transplants work and it’s not just the rich and famous who receive organs. “Most patients live on for decades after getting a transplant,” he said. “Being a donor is the ultimate way of giving back.” Martines said she hopes the work she and others are doing will help in seeing an increase in donors and eliminate the misconceptions. “We’ll continue to try and make a difference here,” she said. “My son is alive because of a total stranger.”

Town buys $3 million parking lot We are proud to have spearheaded the effort at the last Town of Huntington board meeting that took a stand on parking fee increases and returned the parking debate’s focus squarely to where it should be: on measures that will ease the Huntington village parking shortage in the short run while we continue to work on long-term solutions in the form of a parking structure. A resolution — as amended to reflect our

concerns — will soon create 74 additional parking spots in the village by purchasing the Chase Bank property at the intersection of Gerard Street and New York Avenue. Those additional spaces are a help, but not the ultimate answer. Our amended resolution freezes metered parking fees and the conversion of existing free parking to pay spaces for four years (2023), or until construction begins on a parking garage, whichever comes first. This is in line with the recommendation of the town’s parking consultant, who last year proposed monetizing all spaces in the village after the structure was built. This is required to help pay for the structure’s construction and also to eliminate a competitive Cuthbertson disadvantage for the
parking structure for which there will be a parking fee. We hope and expect that residents and visitors to the village’s restaurants, clubs, shops and theaters will understand the need for imposing the charges at the proper time. But, until then, we stand with our village merchants and their patrons in their position that increasing fees without providing parking relief only adds insult to the stress of finding a place to park. That is why we opposed the recent metered parking increases, highlighted the inaccurate logic cited for the measure, and spotlighted the real reason for the hike: to balance a budget strained by increased patronage hiring. We are pleased that after some rare in-public negotiating, our town board colleagues saw the merit of our argument and acquiesced. Let us now proceed to resolve the remaining questions surrounding the parking structure, comforted by the fact that at least for the next few years, parking fees will not become a pawn of budget balancing. The Town of Smithtown is seeking an experienced, animal care professional to administer the daily operation of its Animal Shelter and Adoption Center. This is a department-head level position that reports directly to the Town Board. The applicant must demonstrate an understanding and experience in facilities management and the ability to manage an allocated budget of $880,000 annually; Directs a staff of 4 Kennel Attendants and 4 Animal Control Officers in the routine maintenance and wellbeing of the Shelter clients and operations; Maintains an established and aggressive Trap, Neuter and Release (TNR) program throughout the 55 square miles of Town of Smithtown’s jurisdiction; works with the Town’s Public Information Officer, community and volunteer groups to publicize the Adoption Center via social media, fairs and other suitable public venues; Maintains standard operating procedures and submits reports on all phases of Animal Shelter operations to the appropriate regulatory agencies and the Town Board; establishes and sustains effective working relationships with the general public, surrounding municipal shelters, and bona fide not for profit rescue groups. Minimum requirements: Veterinarian Technician license, with four (4) years of paid experience in the care and handling of animals in an institutional setting, two (2) of which must have been in a supervisory capacity; or Associates Degree in Animal Care or related field, and experience as described above; or Graduation from HS with six (6) years of experience as described above; or equivalent combination of education and experience. on Father’s Day
Celebrating Father’s Day A son’s thank you to his dad On occasions like Father’s Day, my thoughts turn not only to my dad, but also to his parents and my uncles. My father passed away in 2004, and I always picture him reunited with his parents. Ten years ago, his brother, my Uncle John, died and a few years later my Uncle Jimmy. I often wonder if, after death, one gets to hang out with those they knew on Earth. I’d like to think they are talking about the old days in the Bronx and Astoria, hopefully with a few cold beers on hand. Most of all, I always hope that my grandparents know that my cousins and I benefited from their sacrifices — leaving Ireland when they were young adults to seek a better life. I also hope my father and uncles know how much they have influenced me and my cousins. For this, I carry them all in my heart. Happy Father’s Day in heaven to all of them.

I didn’t know what to say to you the night you came home after learning your mother had passed away. To be perfectly honest, she was never close to me, and it was hard for me to place my emotions, but I knew you were doing your best to deal with the shock and the grief. I saw you hop on a plane the very next morning after working nine hours the day before. I didn’t know how to say I’m sorry you went through that, and I know when I spoke to you on the phone, I must have sounded close to a narwhal trying to approximate human emotion. But I saw how you were when you came back. You caught up with your sister. You had a new plan, and though you were leaving me to move into her old house, you could now say you were moving on. You need to know how proud I am that you’re my dad.

On Father’s Day, I would like to highlight two father figures in my life growing up. One was my grandfather and the other my uncle. Both men were instrumental in my upbringing, and as a young man, they were individuals to whom I definitely looked up. I’m grateful for the experiences I’ve been able to have with them as a kid, whether it’s going to my first Yankee game or hours of playing catch in the backyard. My grandfather unfortunately passed away in 2012, but the lessons he taught me remain. His guidance over the years has molded me into the man I am today. The same could be said for my uncle, as he has always been there for me and continues to be. I’ve been lucky to have these two great men in my life. I want to thank them for everything — it has meant so much to me.

Every time I turn on the car or reflect on the education I received, I have my dad to thank. The son of a mechanic and restaurant waitress, he fought to pull himself through college, working 80-hour weeks at Howard Johnson’s and attending classes at community college after working the graveyard shift, funded by his own pocket. A successful public servant, he has fueled my passion for politics, philosophy and sports my entire life. This Father’s Day, I will probably be debating one of these topics with Dad, who taught me to have an opinion on and to question everything.

BY JIM SOVIERO DESK@TBRNEWSMEDIA.COM My father, Salvatore (Sam) Soviero, was a loving, devoted husband, father and son. A robust, upbeat man, born in 1914 to Italian immigrants Vincenzo and Louise Soviero, Dad’s life by today’s standards was a tough one. Beginning at a very young age, he caddied, worked construction, ground the grapes for wine and wound up boxing to “put money on the table.” Given his extraordinary success as an adult, Dad rightly figured it would be smart to raise his son in pretty much the same way he was raised. Dramatic global changes notwithstanding, Salvatore would follow two basic principles: he’d set a good example and enforce firm limits. Sam lived an exemplary life. He was a man of great integrity who worked tirelessly to support his family. One of his most poignant lessons on “doing the right thing” came while he and I were going through some of his old fight posters. Sammy was a very good light heavyweight who had trained at Stillman’s Gym with top fighters of the day. Pointing to one opponent, Dad said, “That guy cost me a shot at a big fight.” When I mentioned not recalling him losing to “that guy,” my father looked down, before quietly saying, “I didn’t.” At his beloved bride Dorothy’s insistence, and during the height of the Depression, Sal became a welder. After my older sister was born, he’d make extra money by working nights and clamming during the day. When we grew out of our tiny two-bedroom bungalow in Huntington Station, he and his brother Joe began dismantling one of Grandpa’s old houses. Over the course of several years, that brick and timber was used to build our family a beautiful, spacious Cape Cod in Halesite. Given that kind of legacy, when Dad interrupted what looked to be this 14-year-old’s summer fun at the beach

with the news I’d begin caddying at the Crescent Club — and putting my earnings on the table — it seemed natural, even flattering. But while trying to follow Dad’s best life lessons was important, following his rules proved to be equally important. One of the most difficult but critical decisions for parents is to judge when it’s necessary to cause their children short-term pain, in exchange for what Mom and Dad hope will be long-term benefits. My father had uncanny commonsense instincts that led him to set perfectly timed restraints on yours truly. I, like virtually every 16-year-old boy, couldn’t wait to get my driver’s license. Dad, like most parents of a 16-year-old, knew the inherent risks. He responded proactively. My first moving
violation meant Salvatore took my license for six months. An accident that was my fault cost me the car for a year. Some disciplined teenage driving meant I’d lose neither the car nor my life. Around the same time, over roughly a two-year period, four classmates died in horrific auto accidents, devastating the lives of their families and friends. Whether leading by example or setting firm limits, having Salvatore Soviero for my father was one of the greatest blessings any son could ever have asked for. Thanks for everything, Dad. Sharing top 10 fake news items in my world

am in the news business. I also write columns. Today, I’d like to conflate the two, tackling the ubiquitous topic of “fake news.” Don’t run away, figuratively speaking! I’m not going to write about politics or politicians. I’m going to share fake news from my world. 10. I am a Yankees fan. What makes that fake? It’s accurate, but it’s also fake because I’ve always been a Yankees fan. While D. None the statement isn’t false, it’s not news of the above because news BY DANIEL DUNAIEF suggests that it’s something new. It’s not fake per se, but also not news and that’s what makes it fake news. 9. I enjoy the time my kids are away.
What makes that fake? The fake element to this is that I enjoy the time they’re home, so I don’t exclusively enjoy the time they’re away. I may have smiled at and with my wife and, yes, I’ve found myself laughing out loud now and then for no particular reason in public, knowing that no one will glare at me, but it’s fake news to suggest I only enjoy this time. 8. I reveled in the movie “Rocketman.” What makes that fake? While the movie was compelling and it offered details about superstar singer Sir Elton John’s childhood, it was a look behind the curtain at his early pain. I sympathized with him as he dealt with family challenges and personal demons, but I can’t say that I reveled in the biopic. I felt moved by his struggles and I appreciate how much he had to overcome to live the balanced life that he seems to have now. The gift of his musical genius may have been enough for the world to appreciate him, but not to give him what he wanted or needed when he was younger. 7. I have a wonderful dog. What makes that fake? My dog has wonderful moments, but I wouldn’t characterize him as
wonderful. He needs training, chews on furniture, jumps on people and barks at things I can’t see, which isn’t so wonderful when I’m conducting interviews with people in other states or when I’m in the middle of a delicate peace negotiation between children who don’t seem to have missed each other all that much when they were apart. 6. I detest logic. What makes that fake? I enjoy logic. It follows rules and patterns. It only appears that I detest logic in this column because I’m trying to make a point about fake news. 5. I’m worried about the Earth. What makes that fake? I’m not just worried about the land: I’m also concerned about the air, the water, biodiversity and a host of other limited resources. 4. I use real words. What makes that fake? People who rely on a computer spellchecker will find numerous words that appear to be incorrect or that are underlined in red in my science columns. Words like nanomaterials, which are super small structures that hold out hope for future technologies such as medical
devices or sensors, don’t register at all. If you asked a spellchecker, my columns are rife with fake words. 3. I use fake words. What makes that fake? I love the double negative element to this. It’s fake to say I use fake words, because I also use real words. 2. I only use small words. What makes that fake? I categorically refute the notion that I only use minuscule words. Check out the word “ubiquitous” at the top of this column. 1. I always lie. What makes that fake? If I always lied, that would make the confession true, which would mean I don’t always lie, which would make the statement fake. The flexible and logic-challenged fake news has become a tool to dismiss information, opinions and realities that people find disagreeable. It provides a convenient way to ignore news that may have more than a kernel of truth to it.
The best advice I have ever been given
W
hat’s the best advice you’ve ever received? I recently asked that question of staffers at the news media office, and this is what they answered. I’ve grouped the responses by department, wondering if there was a common thread that ran through their common work. Answer: There wasn’t, at least not one that I could see. You judge. The Sales Department “Go to college.” I also asked this person if that advice had changed her life. “Yes, it was a positive thing for my future. whatever seems bad now.” Right around then, I started to ask the source of the advice. “My mother,” she explained. “One day, when I was about 12, my mother and I were disagreeing. ‘You need to remember the world does not revolve around you.’ That thought helped me be a much less self-centered person. I became more aware that what was going on around me was often more important.” “Never look back or to the future. Yesterday is gone, tomorrow has not yet come. Live for today. That came from my Aunt Doris.” “If at first you don’t succeed, don’t give up. That came from my mother and was especially true for my dancing. Another is: Always trust your gut. Go with it if something doesn’t feel right.” The Business Department “See the humor in things. It’s only just recently that I have begun to see that and be on the positive side of things. That has made me a happier person since I turned 50.” I forgot to ask who told her that. “Expect the unexpected. That may sound pessimistic but it has made me ready to cope. That advice comes from life’s experiences.” “Treat others as you want to be treated. That
