He has overall responsibility for 3,700 full-time equivalent employees and a $600 million budget. Sanchez is a diplomate of the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology and has a board certification as a fellow with the American College of Healthcare Executives. He received both his doctor of medicine degree and master’s in healthcare services administration from the University of Puerto Rico Medical Science Campus. The VA hospital has been without a full director since Scott Guermonprez left the position in July of last year after only one year at the helm. The Northport VA has been plagued with staff shortages in recent years, including a federal investigation last year showing a chronic nursing shortage.

The Department of Veterans Affairs announced the appointment of Dr. Antonio Sanchez as the new director of the Northport VA Medical Center. He is taking over for interim director Dr. Cathy Cruise. Sanchez will oversee delivery of health care to more than 31,000 veterans. “We are excited to bring Dr. Sanchez on board as the new director of the Northport VA Medical Center,” said Dr. Joan E. McInerney, director of Veterans Integrated Service Network. “His sound leadership qualities and proven experience will be valuable assets for the facility, the employees and volunteers, and most importantly, for the veterans we are honored to serve. We anticipate he will arrive at the medical center within the next 45 to 60 days to begin his appointment.” Sanchez joined the VA more than 18 years ago and has held positions at the VA Caribbean Healthcare System in San Juan, Puerto Rico. Town board to reconsider Old Town Hall hotel plans BY DONNA DEEDY DONNA@TBRNEWSMEDIA.COM The Huntington Town board will consider at its June 18 meeting a plan to convert its Old Town Hall into an expanded hotel. The board previously approved the project, but will be reconsidering a revised plan, which entails enlarging the size of the hotel from 55 rooms to 80 rooms. The proposal includes a three-story addition onto the rear of Old Town Hall, where the rooms would be located. The Old Town Hall building would contain the lobby, offices and common areas, as previously proposed. The site is located in the Historic Overlay District, a designation that gives owners of historic properties and large residential estates flexibility for use. The expansion means that the board must consider applying that special status to an additional parcel east of Old Town Hall, which the applicant acquired for the expansion. “It’s important we bring renewed life to this historic landmark, preserving Huntington’s history and boosting our downtown economy,” Supervisor Chad Lupinacci (R) said. “Huntington village has always been a
destination and the idea of a boutique hotel that pays homage to the building’s past life as the former Town Hall will achieve those goals, while bringing added convenience and comfort of an overnight stay.” The project is being developed by Huntington Village Hotel Partners with George Tsunis as one of the affiliated associates. Tsunis, a former partner in Rivkin Radler LLP, a law firm that represents both private clients and municipalities, has served the Town of Huntington as special counsel. Tsunis did not respond to calls for comment. Huntington Hotel Partners, as listed in the the states’ corporate file, uses the law firm Buzzell, Blanda and Visconti as its registered agent. The firm did not respond to calls for comment before going to press time. The plan to convert Old Town Hall into a hotel dates back to at least 2013, when Old Town Hall Operating Co. developed and submitted plans for a $10 million renovation to the town’s planning board. Old Town Hall was built in 1910 and is listed in the National Register of Historic Places. It last served as Huntington’s Town Hall in 1979.

Northport-East Northport students crunch the numbers Northport High School students Camden Burk, Alexia Kaloudis and Peter Mainetti were recognized at the Suffolk County Math Teachers Association Senior High Awards Dinner on May 20. These students, who competed in the seniorlevel Math League, received some of the highest scores in the county over nearly 80 teams. Northport High School, overall, was ranked the
seventh highest scoring school in the county. “All three of these students tackle accelerated math programs, and are doing so with tremendous amounts of success,” said NHS math teacher Anthony Perico. “Their placement in this competition is an embodiment of their hard work and dedication to the field of mathematics.”
Cats overwhelm local shelter after unusual discovery BY DAVID LUCES DLUCES@TBRNEWSMEDIA.COM On May 22 the people at Little Shelter Animal Rescue & Adoption Center rescued more than 20 abandoned cats living in squalor in an unidentified Centerport home. Neighbors and the new property owner called the shelter after the previous residents were evicted. David Ceely, executive director of Little Shelter, which manages the Huntington shelter, said the situation was initially too much for its responder to handle. “This is not a daily occurrence,” he said. “We typically get calls about a couple of animals abandoned not usually something this large.” After Ceely entered the house with trappers, the cats scattered. Authorities identified extreme living conditions, while trying to catch the animals. They found rooms fouled with old, soiled newspaper in litter boxes and empty food and water bowls. The cats were forced to
escape through a broken basement window in search of food and water. Ceely also noticed that a stove top burner had been left on. “Cats love to move around and jump on things, that gas burner had to have been running for weeks, not only is that danger but this could have ended a lot worse than it did,” he said. The captured cats will be vaccinated, spayed or neutered and fit with a microchip. Ceely said some of the cats were put up for adoption last weekend. The rest need to be evaluated to make sure they are ready for a new home. “The biggest way to help us is to adopt and donate to help offset the medical cost,” Ceely said. The executive director said the facility has too many cats that need homes. They hope people adopt the animals, since the facility is maxed out on its capacity. James Nolan Regan, of East Northport, died May 10 at the age of 76. He was the beloved husband of Peggy Ann (nee O’Brien); loving father of Peggy Ann (Michael) Gallagher, James (Kamala) Regan, Eileen (Russell) Murphy, Thomas (Marie) Regan and Jeanne (Christopher) Kozlowsky; the dear brother of Florence Keutmann and Dennis Regan and the late Thomas Regan, the late John Regan and the late Margaret Cahill; and cherished grandfather of Katherine, Michael, Emily and Ryan Gallagher; Claire, Molly, Kelly and Maggie Regan; Reilly, Brigid and Liam Murphy; Matthew, Brendan and Kaitlin Regan and Regan and Adelyn Kozlowsky. Regan and his wife Peggy Ann were married for 55 years and were christened together 76 years ago. Jim retired as a lieutenant with the New York Police Department with his last assignment at the 81st precinct.

Young) Oates, Joseph Oates and Linda Jean (Gordon) Brown; beloved grandmother of Joe III, Gregory Oates, Melissa Oates and Derek and Robert Brown; and cherished great- grandmother of Colton and dear sister-inlaw of Vera Carminati. She was reposed at Nolan Funeral Home, in Northport with a funeral Mass at St. Philip Neri Church in Northport. Interment followed at St. Patrick’s Cemetery in Huntington.

John K. Henesy, of Hauppauge, died May 6. He was 92. Henesy was the beloved husband of the late Catherine; the loving father of Kevin (Joanna), and Barbara Ann Etkin; the cherished grandfather of Nicole Henesy (Jason Stewart), Angela Henesy, Benjamin Etkin and William Etkin; and dear great-grandfather of Jayden. Visitation was held at Calvary Chapel Island of Grace in Holbrook. Funeral services were held at the church and he was buried beside his wife with military honors at Calverton National Cemetery. Huntington town to host what-if marijuana seminar
A Town of Huntington councilman is planning a town hall to share how the town can be prepared if marijuana is legalized in New York. On June 4, 7 p.m. at Huntington Town Hall, Councilman Mark Cuthbertson (D) will preside over a discussion titled “The New York State legalization of marijuana: How would it affect us in the Town of Huntington? How can we best be prepared?” Panelists include professionals from law enforcement, treatment and recovery; health care and prevention specialists; drug counselors; the American Automobile Association; human re-
source professionals and public policy makers. Patriots’ three quarter surge snares Northport Tigers BY BILL LANDON DESK@TBRNEWSMEDIA.COM The Northport Tigers, the Division I No. 3 seed, went to the halftime break protecting a one goal lead, but the Ward Melville Patriots, the No. 2 seed, sparked to life in the third quarter scoring four goals to take the lead for good in the Class A semifinal round winning 11-8 at home May 23. Junior Jack Gillen led the way for the Patriots scoring three goals with one assist, seniors Dylan Pallonetti had
two assists along with two goals and Brandon Aviles found the cage twice. Sal Miccio, a junior, topped the scoring chart for the Tigers, stretching the net four times, while senior captains Max Napoli and Liam Caulfield had two goals apiece. Northport concludes its 2019 campaign with a 10-5 record, 11-6 overall. The Patriots will again advance to the Suffolk County championship round at Farmingdale State College May 29, where they’ll face the No.1 seed Smithtown West. Game time is at 6:30

This is a department-head level position that reports directly to the Town Board. The applicant must demonstrate an understanding and experience in facilities management and the ability to manage an allocated budget of $880,000 annually; Directs a staff of 4 Kennel Attendants and 4 Animal Control Officers in the routine maintenance and wellbeing of the Shelter clients and operations; Maintains an established and aggressive Trap, Neuter and Release (TNR) program throughout the 55 square miles of Town of Smithtown’s jurisdiction; works with the Town’s Public Information Officer, community and volunteer groups to publicize the Adoption Center via social media, fairs and other suitable public venues; Maintains standard operating procedures and submits reports on all phases of Animal Shelter operations to the appropriate regulatory agencies and the Town Board; establishes and sustains effective working relationships with the general public, surrounding municipal shelters, and bona fide not for profit rescue groups. Minimum requirements: Veterinarian Technician license, with four (4) years of paid experience in the care and handling of animals in an institutional setting, two (2) of which must have been in a supervisory capacity; or Associates Degree in Animal Care or related field, and experience as described above; or Graduation from HS with six (6) years of experience as described above; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Open the freezer Despite the hours we work to consistently get this paper into your hands and the local news to your eyes and your ears, we cannot be everywhere at once. Our budgets are ever-more limited, and our attention is pulled to all parts of our coverage areas. News outlets having to cut staff and resources means there are gaps of information. We do our best, and we hope you agree it is well worth the buck you paid for it, but perfect coverage is impossible in this day and age. Something will move in to fill the gap — it’s the nature of these things. Surprisingly, that hole has been filled with something that was once used for college kids to learn who was dating whom, that being Facebook. It’s amazing how much information is parsed and spread through individual Facebook pages, along with both private and public groups. You have community pages, moms pages, VFWs, even small municipalities like fire departments and villages all using their pages to get messages out. For us journalists, Facebook has become a tool to gather stories, sources and even occasionally to conduct interviews. But for residents, Facebook is a razor-barbed rose. Disturbingly, to professional journalists who do their absolute best to get to the heart of the truth, the opposite is regularly proliferated through these same Facebook pages. Rumors fly across social media faster than any one person could hope to actually investigate each post. At meetings, we often hear officials complain about the rumors spread online, though we journalists condemn any elected official who should ever truly complain about a community becoming engaged, looking at the overall low polling numbers across the spectrum. However, this activism on the community’s side is not helped with false facts. Taking journalism classes in college, students are often first made to take a media literacy course, which helps students identify false information when it’s presented to them. One phrase, which became a tagline at the media literacy course at Stony Brook University, was “open the freezer,” relating to a media report back to Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans back in 2005. One broadcast claimed the bodies of those who died during that traumatic storm and its aftermath had been stacked in a walk-in freezer as they were waiting for transport. However, the news report was false, there were no bodies in the freezer. The problem? The reporter never bothered to open the freezer and see for themself. Don’t take what is on Facebook for truth automatically, as each one of us can be a little journalistic even without a degree. Try researching online, try calling the people referenced in these stories. Don’t take any information presented for you at its face value. Skepticism is healthy for the eager news junkie. Never let what you read on Facebook be the end to a story. Be sure to take a peek inside that proverbial freezer.

This Congress, the House must once again pass this important legislation, and the Senate must finally take action to send it to the president’s desk. It is imperative that New York State step up to the plate for our fishermen as well and pursue alternative data collection methods so that flawed decisions made by the ASMFC can be challenged. The State of Florida is instituting it’s own data collection program on red snapper, utilizing state resources from local universities to do the science and statistics. With world class marine science institutions like Stony Brook, SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry (ESF) and Cornell that can do the research, this is the model New York should be following. Since my time in the New York State Senate when I led the successful effort to repeal the Saltwater Fishing License Fee, I’ve never stopped fighting for hardworking Long Islanders and to protect and preserve the waterways that so many of them rely on, and we cannot stop now. As we head into this year’s fishing season, we are reminded of just how urgent it is to turn the tide for our local fishermen. Managing the uneasy marriage between determination and doubt
W
e generally don’t have to look too far to find difficult marriages. But what about the unions that reside
inside us? Determination and doubt travel together when we’re making a decision, when we’re confronting the naysayers and when we’re preparing for the next steps in our lives. Sure, I could take the harder assignment, prove something to D. Determination is often considered the more admirable member of this marriage. Such fortitude pushes us to set new expectations and to venture into arenas where the risks we take could cause physical or emotional bruises. We see determination when we look at the faces of people running up a hill, returning home late from work, or practicing their musical instruments until they develop rings on their lips or red welts on their necks. When we’re seeking inspiration, we read about or consider the determination of others, who overcome financial, emotional or logistical limitations and exceed everyone’s expectations but their own. Determination is akin to an offroad vehicle that we maneuver into untrodden or difficult terrain, hoping our suspension and alignment can handle the sudden and unexpected contours of a landscape better suited for pictures or studies of nature than for travel. While it has a bad reputation, doubt, like the blue girl Sadness from the movie “Inside Out,” also has its place. Doubt can, of course, make the determined part of ourselves even more steadfast,
as we seek to prove to ourselves and everyone else that we can and will accomplish anything. Doubt is the rain that can make the sunshine that much sweeter. Doubt also can spring from reason and understanding, as in, “I doubt climbing to the top of that tree, when I haven’t maneuvered to the top of a tree in years, is a good idea.” Yes, doubt can and does save us, not just from embarrassment but from injuries, discomfort or dead ends. Reflexively ignoring doubt as an unwelcome voice whispering in our ear carries risks that may be unnecessary, such as ignoring a “Beware of the Dog” sign before jogging through a stranger’s yard. So, how do we deal with this married couple? Do we let determination rule the day most of the time, while we periodically give doubt the chance to share concerns about obstacles and consequences? The answer depends on the circumstance. What is the downside to acknowledging, understanding and appreciating the origin and
potential benefit of a doubt? This doubt shouldn’t need to hide behind the punch bowl, sit in the dark with the coats in a back bedroom, or wait in the car while determination gets to run wild, pushing our limits. We should consider doubt — whether we or someone else expresses it — in the open, allowing ourselves to ponder and plan for the difficulties ahead, giving ourselves a chance to make informed decisions and to see a few steps into the maze of our future. Our doubt may help us find a better course of action, redirecting and refocusing a determination that enables us to persevere over the course of a future filled with potential but riddled with uncertainty. If our determination makes a better case than our doubt, at least we’ve benefited from the marriage that lives in us. Indeed, at its finest, determination should not only understand and appreciate doubt, but this tenacity should also use concerns and objections as motivation, giving determination the opportunity to win over the concerns doubt expresses.
From sudden choices, deep roots grow

ncredible as it seems to me, it was exactly 50 years ago that we started packing for our move to the North Shore of Long Island. We were on an Air Force base in Texas at the time and had originally not planned to come here. It was 1969, the Vietnam War (a part of our everyday life in the military) was raging, both Kennedys and Martin Luther King had been assassinated, the country was being ripped apart by riots, and until that moment we had intended to settle permanently in San Diego. tour of duty ended, we should live on the southern California coast. So we were taking our two sons, the third still in utero, to settle on the other side of the country from the city in which we were both born. But our families were still in New York. And when the time came for us to declare our intentions to the movers, we couldn’t go through with the decision. In those chaotic times, family seemed the most important element of our lives. My parents were our children’s only grandparents, my husband’s parents having both passed away some years earlier. Our children were my parents’ only grandchildren, and they all adored each other. To everyone’s surprise we changed our plans at the last minute and wound up in Stony Brook, attracted by the coming medical center, which my husband felt would enrich his ophthalmology practice. The rest is history, our history interacting with our hometown, and after half a century I will say that the community never disappointed. We discovered St. Charles Hospital, where

our third son was born and where I was cared for like royalty. After a nomadic year of renting, we found a beautiful piece of property in the middle of the woods and borrowed to the hilt so that we could build a modest ranch house there. My husband started his solo practice—that’s what physicians did in those days—in a small medical building in Port Jefferson, and after six months we could afford linoleum to cover the subflooring in the kitchen. A year later we were able to pave the driveway. We regarded those as personal high water marks. Meanwhile we loved, loved, loved the beaches, the creeks and the rivers within easy drive. We swam, collected all manner of shells and identified them for our children, we rode tire tubes into the harbor as the tide swept us out of the creek and we rented kayaks to paddle on the Nissequogue River. Our big expenditure was a Sailfish that we kept on the rack at the beach, and we sailed across Stony Brook Harbor to the Smithtown beach. People welcomed us, we found friends—or rather our children found friends and we then became friends with the parents—and we enjoyed the social and cultural scenes thoroughly. Our children were educated in the local school district well enough to continue in life and thrive. We thank the many teachers, administrators, counselors and other personnel who every day delivered that fine effort. My husband’s practice grew, and so did our children, so that shortly after the youngest started first grade I was able to realize my dream: starting a hometown newspaper to serve these villages. Again, our work was welcomed and our lives blossomed. I am thrilled every time I meet new residents and visitors to our area. Those contacts are invariably enriching, and we take our mission to provide impartial information and protect the community to be a noble pursuit. Over the years, I have been lucky enough to be joined by highly committed colleagues. After 50 years, we can look back and know that we made the right choice.
