Driver’s relative arrested at crash site Chevrolet that had been traveling north on the same road, attempted to turn left onto West 22nd Street and struck him. Police identified the Chevrolet’s driver as 49-year-old Huntington resident Michael Fiordalisi. About an hour later, police arrested a bystander at the scene, who is Fiordalisi’s family member, and charged him with second-degree obstruction of governmental administration. The SCPD said the suspect, 48-year-old Melville resident Jeffrey Krieger, repeatedly crossed police tape while trying to take photographs of the crash scene. Rivas, of Huntington Station, was

Police arrested a relative of a man involved in a serious car crash on Sunday morning, after the suspect allegedly interfered with an investigation. The Suffolk County Police Department said motorcyclist Ricardo Rivas, 53, was seriously injured in the crash, after a pickup truck turned into him at 9:25 a.m. Rivas had been riding a 2002 BMW south on Oakwood Road in Huntington Station when the pickup, a 2013 Jeffrey Krieger

treated for serious but non-life-threatening injuries at Stony Brook University Hospital while Fiordalisi was treated at Huntington Hospital for non-life-threatening injuries. Krieger, police said, was released on bail and was scheduled to be arraigned in July. Attorney information for the defendant was not available. Police impounded both the BMW and the Chevrolet for safety checks. Detectives from the SCPD’s 2nd Squad are investigating the incident. Anyone with information about the crash is asked to call them at 631-854-8252.

Police seek dress grabbers Suffolk County Crime Stoppers and Suffolk County Police Second Precinct Crime Section officers are seeking the public’s help in identifying and locating two women who allegedly stole merchandise from a Huntington Station store this month. Police said two women stole three dresses from Bloomingdale’s, located in the Walt Whitman Mall at 270 Walt Whitman Road, on May 7 at approximately 4:05 p.m. The first suspect is described as a black female wearing a coral-colored dress and white Converse high-top sneakers. The second suspect is described as a pregnant black female wearing a multicolored outfit and a black jacket. Police said the suspects entered the dressing room of Bloomingdale’s where they cut off the anti-security tags and placed them in a Macy’s shopping bag. Cops said they were last seen in the parking lot getting into a gray Hyundai with Massachusetts license plates. Suffolk County Crime Stoppers offers a cash reward of up to $5,000 for information that leads to an arrest. Anyone with information about this crime is asked to call anonymously to Crime Stoppers at 1-800-220-TIPS (8477). All calls will be kept confidential.

Huntington golfers lead county tournament While conditions were far from optimal, an excellent first day put the Huntington golf team atop the standings at the Section XI Championships at Rock Hill Golf & Country Club in Manorville last Tuesday, Huntington (385) led defending Suffolk champion Sayville (390) and top challengers Ward Melville (395), Smithtown West (399), Northport (402), Harborfields (403) and Sachem East (403). Huntington’s Jim Smoot (71), Thomas Waldron (77), Tyler Gerbavsits (77) and Justin LoTurco (78) all made the cut to play for the individual championship last Thursday. While Chris Glowacky (82) and Chris Bergman (83) missed the cut for the individual tournament, the talented duo still played with their four teammates as the Blue Devils attempted to win the team title. Huntington head coach Michael Marinello was pleased with how his team performed on the opening day of the county championships. “The team really played well today under extreme pressure,” Marinello said. “The level of competition is fierce and they know every shot counts. This is an experienced team that has finished third and fourth in the
county over the past two seasons. Smoot, Waldron, Gerbavsits and LoTurco were vying to finish in the top nine, which would earn them a berth in the state finals at Cornell University in Ithaca from Saturday to June 1. While Glowacky and Bergman didn’t make the cut for the individual championships, the pair are vital to Huntington’s quest for the county team title. Bergman shot an 83 after rebounding from a tough opening two holes. “I was five over [par] going through two, which I hoped to be after my [entire] round,” he said. “I knew it was going to be a rough day, but I grinded it out. After I finished my front nine, I knew I probably wasn’t going to make the cut as an individual. But, I knew my teammates were counting on me, so I kept pushing and played to the best of my ability, which led to us having a five stroke advantage over Sayville going into day two.” Glowacky’s 82 on the first day included a pair of birdies. “It wasn’t the best round I have ever shot, but it got the job done,” he said. “I was a little nervous on the first tee, but I soon calmed down and just played my game. We all want this championship really bad
and we are going to do whatever it takes to win on Thursday. I am so proud at all the hard work we have all put in to get to where we are. We plan to take the county championship home.”
LoTurco, Huntington’s captain, was pleased with his 78 considering the course conditions. “Although my drives were pretty sporadic, my short game helped me to put up a pretty
good score,” the senior said. “Our team went into the tournament with a lot of determination. Our hard work has prevailed thus far and we plan on coming out tomorrow with a county championship.” Waldron had two birdies on the first day as he shot a six over par 77 to qualify for the final round of the championship. “I was four over par with two holes to play when I started to slip,” he said. “I thought about the boys and that they needed my help. I was able to pull through for my team. A five-shot lead going into day two is huge for us. This is the exact scenario that we were preparing for. I couldn’t be any happier with my team’s performance today.” Smoot shot a 35 on the front nine, including three birdies and a 36 on the back nine at Rock Hill for a 71 and second place on the leader board after the first day. “I was trying to put up a good number for the team,” he said. “I hit it solid all day, but struggled on the greens because of the rain.” Although Huntington lost the county team title to Ward Melville last Thursday, which edged out Sayville in a tiebreaker, Smoot qualified for the state tournament at Cornell on Monday.

In a continuing effort to maintain the safety of the community, the members of the Northport Volunteer Fire Department, under the command of Chief Joseph
Pansini, participated in a joint training exercise with the staff at the PSEG Northport power plant. Senior firefighters alongside new probationary members trained
together. The scenarios simulated workers sustaining injuries from being trapped in confined spaces, falls from extreme heights and workers sustaining electri-
cal shock injuries. Simulated “life ending” hazards were set up to add to the difficulty. For the first time, the Northport junior firefighters “The Smokeaters”
were allowed to attend and participated as the simulated victims and rescuers. No injuries were reported and all came home better trained.

Gershow Recycling donates use of 30 vehicles
In support of local fire departments and the Huntington community, Gershow Recycling donated the use of 30 vehicles for the 8th Annual Chuck Varese Vehicle Extrication Tournament, which was held at the Northport Fire Department’s
training grounds at Steers Pit in Northport on May 9. Fifteen teams from 10 fire departments in Huntington Town, as well as fire departments from North Bellmore, Kings Park and first-time participant Amityville competed in the tourna-
ment. Each team was judged on the amount of time it took to perform the extrication, the handling of equipment and the safety procedures they followed. After the tournament ended, the vehicles were shredded and recycled at Gershow’s facility.
The Huntington Arts Council is proud to announce that Beth E. Levinthal, Hofstra University Museum executive director and HAC board member, has received the Anne Ackerson Innovation in Leadership Award. The Museum Association of New York (MANY) presented its 2014 Awards of Merit at the annual conference held at the Corning Museum of Glass in Corning, NY. Hofstra University Museum Executive Director and member of the Board of Directors of the Huntington Arts Council, Beth E. Levinthal was awarded the Anne Ackerson Innovation in Leadership Award for her strategic leadership of the Hofstra
University Museum, and her contributions to the museum field. MANY’s Award of Merit program acknowledges outstanding programs and individuals who have made the state’s museum community better and stronger. The Museum Association of New York is a non-profit organization that provides resources, training and expertise to New York’s heritage organizations and museums, thereby strengthening their capacity to better serve their communities and meet their institutional missions. Beth has been an active and engaged member of the Huntington Arts Council Board of Directors since September of 2014.

said, of recitals where children are not really dancing but merely reproducing steps by rote. Instead, “we do performances when the dancers have something to show,” she said. “They’re performing with the music, to bring out the elements that were intended in the role.” That flow between dancer and music is achieved through per-
formance plus education, Posey said. She herself was trained at the School of American Ballet in New York City as a youngster. Today her students — who range in age from preschoolers to seniors — take classes in ballet, modern dance, jazz, folk and country dances. The school is not about competition among students. “We don’t compare one person with another,” Posey said. “It’s not that you’re better than somebody else.”
Dance inspires in many ways, Posey said, and can even improve lives. “I help the children understand dance as a part of history and their culture,” she explained. Appreciating cultural differences, and the values held by those who live in other places, “is what makes us better people.” Make no mistake — though dance is surely physical, it’s much more than athletics, Posey said. “Dance is not a sport. It’s an art.” Musicians, too, she said, know that music
and movement can create “an opening of the mind.” Posey was the founder and first president of the National Dance Education Organization, which gave her its Lifetime Achievement Award. She is current president of the National Registry of Dance Educators, a group of master teachers of dance. Heather Johnson, director of the Northport Historical Society, said the organization is honoring Posey because “she always
talks about how great the community is here. But she’s part of what makes it wonderful.” Posey “is so very dedicated to her students,” Johnson said. “And she’s also been a supporter of the historical society.” In a press release from the historical society, Steven King, president of the society’s board, said, “The entire Northport community has benefited greatly from Elsa Posey’s commitment to providing dance instruction and performance.”

Safe bet for safe spots Thanks to legislation introduced by Suffolk County Legislator Tom Muratore (r-ronkonkoma), the county could be the next municipality in the nation to create safe spots — public locations where residents can exchange goods and conduct private sales. Similar safe havens have been created throughout the United States — in Georgia, Missouri and Connecticut, for example — in response to crimes committed against people using websites like Craigslist to buy and sell goods. While the majority of Craigslist transactions occur without incident, there is always the chance of someone taking advantage of the situation, whether it be robbing the other person in the transaction or physically harming them in some way. We applaud Muratore, a former Suffolk County police officer, for looking into this simple solution to deter unscrupulous individuals from harming others. But if the county does move forward with this idea, we hope the locations will be in active places; be monitored by surveillance; be heavily signed, notifying visitors that it is a safe spot and is being monitored; and provide residents with safety tips for engaging in such exchanges in an effort to be even more proactive than reactive. As Muratore said, “Technology is changing the way people are doing business,” and we have to change with it.

Laughing off a coach’s catchphrase malaise

A
boys’ baseball team I coached recently lost a game in such an excruciating fashion that I couldn’t rely on all the standby coach catchphrases. “We’ll get ’em next time,” would fall flat, especially when we had them for the taking. We were up by two runs and were in complete control of the game
until the final outs. “Hey, this one’s on me.” That’s nice and can work in deflecting any possible blame, but the kids generally don’t buy into it. If they believe it, it also sets a dangerous precedent for future losses. “Hey, coach,” they might ask at the end of another game. “This one’s clearly not on you, right? Isn’t it Johnny’s fault?” Those final three outs never happened. What made the game even more difficult to swallow was that the other team didn’t put a single ball in play in their final at bat. Four walks, a hit batter and a few wild pitches later, we were done. We trudged to left field for the postgame analysis and pep talk. “Hey,” I said. “Look, uh, this is one game, right?” I could see it in their eyes: “Weak and feeble, coach. You’re going to have to do better than that.” “You know, we did a lot right this game.”
“Who cares,” their sullen, downcast eyes indicated. “We lost.” “OK, well, we can’t win them all.” I didn’t even need to look at them to know what they were thinking. I was thinking it, too, as the words came dribbling out of my mouth. “Seriously? You’re going with that?” “Boys, I know you all did your best.” Their eyes moved to their parents, as if they were saying telepathically: “Get me out of here, I want to go home.” “Hey,” I said, a small smirk on my face. “Guys, who saw Joey’s slide at second today? Was that the ugliest thing you’ve ever seen?” Joey had wandered too far from second and would have been out if the pitcher had thrown the ball to the second baseman. When the second baseman had to move a few feet from the base, Joey dove back
head first and landed flat on his chest, a yard short of the base. He crawled on his hands and knees across the dirt to the base, arriving just in time to beat the second baseman’s tag. “That was funny,” several of them seemed to say. Joey, you see, is a bit sensitive so that comment could have been dangerous. Even he, however, offered a small smile. It was an absurd moment to savor. And, fortunately for us, he was safe, so laughing about it was probably safe. In that final, fateful, painful inning, the first pitcher walked two and hit a batter, sending the tying run to second and the winning run to first. I brought in a tall relief pitcher who promptly walked another two batters. A wild pitch later, the game was over. “Fred, do you know why I put you in there at the end of the game?” I asked. “Because you believed in me?” he offered hopefully.
‘OK, well, we can’t win them all.’ “Well, sure, but the real reason is that you’re much taller than me.” Again, I was reaching for the absurd. No one looked at their parents. “Yeah, you see, it’s not right for a 12-year-old boy to be taller than his coach. I needed to cut you down to size.” The grin spread quickly across his face, as well as those of the other four boys who look down on me. No, it wasn’t in the playbook, but it worked.

y mother adamantly refused to let the pediatrician remove my tonsils several decades ago. She certainly respected his expertise, having chosen him carefully after an extended search when she knew she was pregnant. But she was not going to agree with his recommended course of action despite my chronic tonsillitis. “Do you have clinical evidence that children who have had their tonsils removed get sick less often?” she demanded of
him. “No,” he responded slowly, “only anecdotal evidence. You know the tonsils have no known function and are not necessary, and hers are very large.” “Hmmph,” was my mother’s rejoinder, “not known to you doctors.” So, as you might expect, I grew up with my tonsils and still have them to this day. They are large enough to inspire each new physician who looks in my throat to exclaim over both their size and their existence in a member of my generation, but whatever role they may play in the human body, they are still playing in mine. My mother and my father had two strongly-held beliefs: First that there were no superfluous parts to the miraculous human body and, second, that optional surgery was not an option. I am sure they were encouraged in those beliefs by the death of an only child of dear friends during an optional tonsillectomy. Do I know if they were right? All I can offer is that history shows the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree. That is why I felt a
burst of glee when I came across a recent article in The New York Times Science section headlined, “Saving the Appendix.” They stopped removing tonsils as simply a matter of course many years ago, but here was further affirmation of the parental dicta. “Five small studies from Europe, involving a total of 1000 patients, indicate that antibiotics can cure some patients with appendicitis; about 70 percent of those who took the pills did not require surgery,” according to Gina Kolata, author of the article. As well, patients who had an appendectomy after first trying antibiotics did not face any more complications than those who went directly to surgery. This, of course, flies in the face of traditional exhortations about rushing to remove the inflamed appendix before it bursts, potentially with dangerous results. While these studies suggest that surgery can be avoided altogether in treating appendicitis, a large-scale clinical trial must be held for verification — and one is in the planning. When

patients who had already had an appendectomy were asked if they would have been willing to try antibiotics first, nearly threequarters responded “yes.” The appendix is “a tiny, wormshaped tube that hangs off the right side of the colon,” Kolata said, and no one knows what it does or why it can suddenly act up. Nor does anyone know why it also can get better on its own, even without antibiotics. And antibiotics actually have been used in the past to treat an inflamed appendix. According to The Times, during the Cold War in the 1950s, when American sailors spent at least six months on nuclear submarines that were prohibited from surfacing, patients with appendicitis were given antibiotics and no deaths or complications were reported. To use antibiotics would, of course, eliminate the need for surgery and hospitalization where appendicitis is diagnosed, which would be both cheaper and safer. How would the drug best be administered? Presently, doctors don’t usually tell their patients about the antibiotics option, citing the above unanswered questions as a reason. Also we know and, for the most part, approve that medicine is a highly conservative profession, avoiding the trendy but insufficiently tested. It is hard “to go away from a 30-minute operation that cures them for the rest of their lives,” said Dr. Giana Davidson, a University of Washington general surgeon quoted in the article. But patients are finding out on their own and some ask for this nonsurgical alternative, thanks in part to information gleaned from the Internet.

Young Blue devils finish year strong Girls’ Track & Field In the final stretch of the season, the Huntington girls’ track and field team enjoyed another sensational performance, winning numerous medals at the Suffolk Freshman Sophomore Championships at Longwood. “It was a solid showing on a windy and cool evening,” Huntington head coach Shawn Anderson said. “It puts us in a positive position for next week.” The Blue Devils followed by competing in the Section XI divisional championships on Tuesday, May 26, and today, May 28, at Northport. At the Suffolk Freshman Sophomore Championships, Huntington tenthgrader Betty Huitt won the sophomore shot put title with a toss of 32-10.25 feet on her last attempt. Jeannie Clerveaux finished 13th with a throw of 27-01.25 feet. Nicole Abbondandelo finished first among all freshmen in the 3,000-meter run, crossing the line in a new personal best time of 10 minutes, 44 seconds. “She ran very even splits, even in a tough headwind and chilly temps,” Anderson said.
Anna Gulizio enjoyed a big day. She finished second in a field of 35 in the sophomore 400 dash in a time of 1:01.26. The teenager was also second out of 24 competitors in the sophomore triple jump, leaping 33 feet 6 inches on her final attempt. Gulizio placed 10th out of 30 competitors in the sophomore long jump, cracking the 16-foot barrier by soaring 16-00.50. It marked a new personal best distance. The top three steeplers in the county squared off this year, including Huntington’s Suzie Petryk, Ward Melville’s Molly Drearie and Miller Place’s Laura Nolan. “It was a windy day and tight race and the three of them ran away from the competition,” Anderson said. In the end, Petryk ran her own race and held off her opponents, dictating the pace from the starting gun and winning wire to wire in 7:02.21. “It’s another confidence booster heading into next week’s divisional meet and state qualifier,” Anderson said. In other action for the Blue Devils: Alexis Pastorelli (5:12.40), Louise Koepele (5.27.81) and Niamh Condon (5:37) all hung tough in the windy conditions

in the 1,500-meter. Pastorelli’s time placed her ninth overall out of 33 runners in the sophomore race. With the wind at their back, Christina Reinersten (14.38 seconds) and Lianna Dechairo (14.70 seconds) both enjoyed fast races in the 100 dash, and Christina Reinersten (30.50 seconds), Gabriella DeLuca (30.92 seconds) and Lianna Dechairo (31.20 seconds) turned in strong performances to conclude their seasons on a high note in the 200 dash. Betty Huitt (88 feet 8 inches) placed sixth overall, just two feet off her best in discus, and Jeannie Clerveaux threw 78 feet 5 inches.
