Lombardo, Brian Fabian and Anthony Rubin, all Northport High School graduates, just earned their college degrees. Lombardo graduated from Clinton College, Fabian from SUNY Plattsburgh last weekend and Rubin from SUNY Buffalo. Now, they’re raising money in a GoFundMe campaign to pay for expenses that occur throughout the trip. stated, because it is an organization that is not affiliated with the Department of Defense and can provide mental health services to those

in need, without running the risk of negative consequences from the service members chain of command. Lombardo said that the charity could provide service members the opportunity to get help and start healing before their issues become a crisis that demands the official attention of their command, or one that brings harm to themselves or others, while simultaneously defending them from the stigma of needing mental health care while serving. “The need is huge,” Van Dahlen said in a phone interview. She is honored and grateful for Lombardo’s efforts to raise awareness and funds for the non-profit. Van Dahlen emphasizes the need for collaborative approach to address the issues. “We really can take care of the understandable mental health needs of those who serve and their families,” Van Dahlen said. “If we work

Mental health, particularly among service members, often seems to be a forgotten topic. One man and his Northport High School friends want to change that by riding bicycles this June from New York to California to raise awareness about mental health concerns among those who have served our nation’s military. Dante Lombardo is a former U.S. Marine who was medically discharged due to his mental health. The East Northport resident, who graduated from Northport High School in 2015, served in the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve from 2015 to 2019. He was trained as a digital wideband transmission equipment operator and as a field radio operator. Throughout Lombardo’s time in the Marine Reserves, he struggled with depression and anxiety, and like many others in a similar position, tried to “tough it out,” because that’s what he said the current military culture dictates. “Nearly anybody who has served can tell you that it is highly frowned upon to seek out mental health care,” he explained. These issues came to a head in April of last year for Lombardo, when he attempted to take his own life. Thankfully, he was connected with a local behavioral health service, giving access to the counseling and the psychiatric care he needed. “Had it not been for these services, I do not believe I would have ever begun the path to wellness that I am on today,” said Lombardo. Unfortunately, many service members suffer from similar mental health issues but do not seek out the help provided by the military, Lombardo said, in fear of being separated from duty due to their issues. The statistics are staggering. “We see 20 veterans each day take their own lives,” said Barbara Van Dahlen, a clinical psychologist who created in 2005 a national network of professionals who provide free

Northport residents overwhelming passed this year’s budget of $171.1 million to a vote of 1,553 to 977. The 2019-20 amount was a $4.2 million and 2.56 percent increase from last year. The district tax levy cap for 2019-20 will be 2.78 percent and the levy amount will increase by over $4 million. A $1.8 million from the capital reserve fund will be used for additional asphalt, concrete and drainage repairs as well as trafﬁc reconﬁguration at the entrance of Northport High School. Three candidates competed for three open seats this year. Allison Noonan, Larry Licopli and Thomas Loughran all ran unopposed and were elected to the board. Noonan received the most votes with 1,864, Licopli followed with 1,796 and Loughran received 1,770.

Huntington Union Free School District

Huntington residents convincingly passed the $133.5 million budget with a vote of 1,064 to 259. The 2019-20 amount is an increase of 2.83 percent and $3.6 million over the current year’s spending plan. A second proposition on the ballot was approved by residents that would fund an estimated $3.9 million worth of projects. Three candidates competed for two open board seats this year. Incumbent William Dwyer secured re-election for another term with 804 votes. Michele Kustera received the greatest number of votes with 966 votes and won election to the board. Joesph Mattio fell short with 570 votes.

Harborﬁelds Central School District

Residents passed the 2019-20 budget of $88 million with a vote 754 to 340. The latest budget amount is an increase of 2.25 percent from 201819 and it leads to a tax levy increase of 3.12 percent. Administrative expenditures will cost $9.9 million, programs will cost $64.9 million and capital projects will take up another $13.2 million.

Hansen Lee and Collen Wolcott won election to the board with 948 and 846 votes, respectively. Lauri Levenberg fell short with 630 votes and Freda Manuel received 248 votes.

Elwood Union Free School District

In a landslide, residents passed the 201920 budget of $62.7 million, 1,223 to 350. The upcoming budget will have a tax levy increase of 2.56 percent. Administrative expenditures took up $7.1 million while programs took $47.1 million; $8.6 million will be used for capital projects. Two candidates competed for one 3-year term seat. Incumbent Deborah Weiss won election with 845 votes while Sara Siddiqui fell short with 712.

Cold Spring Harbor Central School District

Residents passed the district’s $70.3 million budget with a vote of 241 to 108. The tax levy for 2019-20 will increase by 2.94 percent. Administrative expenditures will take up $6.2 million; $52.8 million will go to programs; and $11.3 million will be reserved for capital projects. Two incumbent candidates ran unopposed. Amelia Brogan secured 282 votes and Julie Starrett received 277.

Commack Union Free School District

Commack residents passed the district’s $197.1 million budget convincingly 1,797 to 537. The 2019-20 budget will see a 2.95 percent increase in the tax levy. $20.4 million will cover administrative expenditures; $142.3 million will go to district programs; and $29.4 million will be used for future capital projects. Four candidates competed for two 3-year term seats: Steve Hartman won election with 1,813 votes as well as Justin Varughese who received 1,543. Pamela Verity fell short with 453 as well as Jennifer Mansi who secured 660. Two candidates competed for one 1-year term seat, including Susan Hermer who won election with 1,627 votes while Jennifer Scully only received 565 votes.

together and coordinate services — we in the government, nonprofit and private sectors — our country can hopefully step up to serve those who have given so much.” It’s a concept that Lombardo and his bike team understand. “This fight is not one person’s burden to bear, but instead one we face together.” During the team’s travels cross-country, they plan to volunteer in soup kitchens, homeless shelters, elderly care homes and other places that offer opportunities to give back. Their journey aims to seek out and hear the testimonies of veterans nationwide so their stories may be heard.

Suffolk County Crime Stoppers and Suffolk County Police 2nd Squad detectives are seeking the public’s help to identify and locate the woman who allegedly stole car keys from an unlocked locker at Planet Fitness, located at 25 Ruland Road in Melville on May 1. The suspect allegedly stole a handbag containing credit cards from the vehicle and used the credit cards at retail stores in the Melville and Huntington Station area. The suspect is described as white, approximately 30 to 35 years old, with a heavy build and dark hair. She was wearing blue jeans and a black jacket.

The bike team has created a Facebook group page, Coast-to-Coast for Mental Health, which will be updated to post stories and experiences of the team, as well as testimonies of those who have suffered. This trip is a humanitarian interactive wellness journey as seen through three young Long Island men who are raising awareness for those who suffer with mental health issues all too often in silence. Lombardo encourages people to share the funding page, the Facebook page, as well as sharing their own stories. His message to the public, “We’ll be seeing you on the trail.” The Times of Huntington will provide updates of the team’s journey in upcoming issues.

Northport VA lacks plan to reopen homeless shelter BY DONNA DEEDY DONNA@TBRNEWSMEDIA.COM

The Northport Veterans Affairs Medical Center’s homeless shelter closed their doors for repairs 18 months ago and never reopened. Congressional leaders from all four Long Island districts want to know why and are demanding that the 50-bed facility, which they say is ready for inhabitants, welcome homeless veterans once again. “The closure of Northport’s on-site homeless shelter has forced veterans to find accommodations far from the medical services they need — the services that oftentimes help mitigate the root causes of homelessness,” said Rep. Lee Zeldin (R-Shirley), Rep. Tom Suozzi (D-Glen Cove), Rep. Kathleen Rice (D-Garden City) and Rep. Peter King (R-Seaford) in a prepared joint statement. The veterans who stayed at the VA’s shelter suffered mainly from traumatic brain injury, posttraumatic stress disorder and substance abuse, according to Frank Amalfitano, president and CEO of Beacon House, the non-profit entity that managed the facility before it closed. “It would be a tragedy if the place didn’t reopen, because so many people need the convenience of the services offered in one location,” he said. Northport’s shelter closed in January 2018 for renovations to the heating system. Its closure was prolonged because the contractor hired by VA failed to update the building in accordance with current fire codes, according to information

provided by Long Island’s congressional leaders. “As it has been presented to us, Building 11 has now been brought up to code and is ready to be inhabited,” they said in a press release. “However, due to VA’s decision to terminate the on-site contract with Building 11’s vendor, with neither a communicated reason nor a viable replacement, we now find ourselves sixteen months later with a renovated building and no vendor in place to provide this vital service to our community’s veterans.” Levi Spellman, press officer for the Northport VA Medical Center, said the contracting requirements are changing for the shelter, so that it can potentially be awarded to a for-profit, veteran-owned business. “We are actively expediting this process and anticipate resuming on-site services before the end of the year,” he said. Spellman also stated that Beacon has done a great job for the VA. “Although housing moved off-site, the same vendor is managing those shelters and the care we provide our veterans has not changed.” Amalfitano said his contract for the Northport shelter was supposed to last until 2020. He’s been encouraged to reapply, but his organization may no longer qualify. Beacon House manages 42 residential programs in Nassau and Suffolk counties for veterans. The mission of the 25-year-old, non-profit, which is funded by United Way, is to “help veterans regain their self-worth and empower them with the tools necessary to rejoin their communities as independent and productive citizens.”

House bill addresses Navy’s Agent Orange concern and veterans’ home ownership BY DONNA DEEDY DEEDY@TBRNEWSMEDIA.COM The U.S. House of Representatives unanimously passed legislation to aid the Navy’s Agent Orange victims in a bill that also expands U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs home loan opportunities for veterans. Rep. Lee Zeldin (R-Shirley) introduced the Flexible VA Loan Guarantee Act as part of the Blue Water Navy Vietnam Veterans Act of 2019 (H.R. 299). He’s urging the Senate for support. “This is the second time that the House has taken action to pass this legislation,” said Zeldin in a statement. “It is incredibly important for the Senate to do their part to help make this actually become law. I’m looking forward to that bill signing, and it is decades overdue.”

Suffolk County, according to Zeldin, is home to New York State’s largest veteran population. He expects the Flexible VA Loan Guarantee Act, if adopted, to eliminate the loan limit or “maximum guarantee amount” of a loan that the VA can guarantee for a veteran, providing the VA with the flexibility to determine the appropriate limit for individual veteran loans and expand access to home ownership in areas like Long Island where real estate values are higher. The Blue Water Navy Vietnam Veterans Act expands treatment coverage for those affected by Agent Orange from not only those who served on the ground, as currently stands, but to those service members who were affected while serving at sea.

State senate passes batch of bills to aid military veterans New York State Sen. Jim Gaughran (D-Northport) and the Senate Democratic majority passed a package of legislation that will expand veterans’ benefits and ease transition back to civilian life. These bills propose to provide veterans with a toll-free hotline on services and benefits, broaden property tax exemptions, make voting more accessible for military voters and implement additional employment benefits and academic credits. Passage of these bills comes in honor of the annual Fort Drum Day, which welcomes service members to the state Senate chamber. “These bills affirm our commitment to providing military service members full resources and opportunities that they have earned,” Gaughran said. “It is our duty to support our active duty personnel during their time of service, and continue to support our veterans when they return home and transition back to civilian life.” The legislation advanced by the Senate Majority includes: ● Active Duty Property Tax Exemptions: This bill, S.2930A, sponsored by the chair of the Committee on Veterans, Homeland Security and Military Affairs, Sen. John Brooks (D-Massapequa), will provide qualified active duty personnel a property tax exemption. ● Expanding Licensed Veterans Employment: This bill, S.2113, sponsored by Sen. James Sanders Jr. (D-Jamaica), will permit veterans who are licensed to practice a profession in another jurisdiction to practice their profession in New York State while their application to practice

their profession in New York State is being processed. ● Veterans Help and Crisis Line: This bill, S.2283A, sponsored by Sen. Sanders, will provide a toll-free telephone number for use as a help and crisis line to assist veterans. ● Increase of Real Property Tax Exemption for Dual Veteran Households: This bill, S.2570, introduced by Sen. Jamaal Bailey (D-Bronx), will increase the Alternative Veterans Real Property tax exemption when two qualifying veterans reside in the same household. ● Veteran Academic Credit: This bill, S.2741A, sponsored by Sen. Joseph Addabbo (D-Howard Beach), will allow full-time undergraduate students enrolled at state-operated institutions to receive academic credit for their military service or training. ● Expanding Veteran Credits on Civil Service Appointments: This bill, S.3647, sponsored by Sen. Andrew Gounardes (D-Bay Ridge), will amend Section 6 of Article 5 of the New York State constitution to eliminate the requirement that a veteran must have served in time of war, and allow for all individuals who have served in the armed forces to receive credits for civil service appointments and promotions. ● Military Voters in School District Elections: This bill, S.5184, sponsored by Sen. Shelley Mayer (D-Port Chester), will provide military voters the opportunity to vote in school district elections by allowing them to return their absentee ballot by postal mail.

Doctors and researchers remain hopeful about future pancreatic treatments

BY ANTHONY FRASCA DESK@TBRNEWSMEDIA.COM After multiple Emmy award-winning “Jeopardy!” host, Alex Trebek, announced that he had stage 4 pancreatic cancer, the news has drawn attention to the disease and raised questions related to the latest advances in diagnosis and treatment of pancreatic cancer. Dr. Aaron Sasson, director of the Pancreatic Cancer Center at Stony Brook University and chief of the Surgical Oncology Division, said little has changed when it comes to a doctor’s ability to diagnose the cancer any earlier. “But we have made improvements in imaging of pancreatic cancer,” he said. “That is, the quality of CT scans and MRIs has improved over the years.” Kerri Kaplan, president and CEO of the Lustgarten Foundation, said the disease has been “notoriously difficult” to detect The Story of Nathan Hale, and treat. The organization is dedicated to Benjamin Tallmadge pancreatic cancer research. & the Origin of The Culper Spies “Although great strides are being made to detect pancreatic cancer earlier, this disease has few warning signs and vague symptoms that may range from back pain, fatigue and loss of appetite, amongst others,” she said in an email. Kaplan added, “Even when there are early signs and symptoms, they may easily be attributed to other illnesses. Because of this, patients are often diagnosed when the cancer is at an advanced stage or has spread to other organs — making them ineligible to undergo surgery, which is the best chance at long-term survival.” According to the foundation, pancreatic cancer research is moving faster than ever before. The nonprofit is funding a range of innovative projects, including artificial intelligence in a partnership with Pancreatic Cancer Collective to use computational approaches to identify high-risk pancreatic cancer populations and CancerSEEK, which is an early detection initiative that uses blood testing to identify eight different types of cancer including pancreatic cancer. Other Lustgarten projects include Dr. David Tuveson of Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory leading a personalized approach to medicine called organoids for personalized therapy — a three-dimensional cell culture system that reproduces a patient’s tumor

to test it repeatedly with different drugs. This approach will enable researchers to determine how a pancreatic cancer patient will respond to various treatments. And with an improved imaging and early detection project, scientists from a broad range of disciplines focus on the use of computers to recognize patterns in medical imaging with the goal of finding tumors when they are otherwise undetectable by the human eye. Pancreatic cancer is the third leading cause of cancer-related deaths in the United States. Ashley Massaro of Smithtown died on May 16 at the age of 39. Massaro is survived by her daughter Alexa. The former pro-wrestler, Playboy cover model and television actress, who competed on the popular CBS television show “Survivor,” most recently hosted a Saturday evening radio program called “Shark After Dark” for 94.3 The Shark station. Tigers pounce Bulls of Smithtown East BY BILL LANDON DESK@TBRNEWSMEDIA.COM In the boys lacrosse quarterfinals, the Bulls of Smithtown East were able to stay with Northport through the first two quarters of play, tying the game at 5-5 at the half. But the Tigers went on the prowl in the second half outscoring the Bulls 6-1 to put the game away 11-6. The co-captains led the way for Northport with seniors Liam Caulfield netting five goals and Max Napoli split the pipes three times along with an assist. Owen Carroll, a freshman, topped the scoring chart for the Bulls netting four goals with senior attack Keith Ditta scoring twice with one assist. Senior keeper Brendan Donovan had 13

saves in net and Northport’s Declan Goonan stopped 14. Smithtown East concludes its season with an impressive record of 11-4. Northport, the third seed, advances to the semifinal round when they hit the road May 23 to take on Ward Melville, the second seed. Game time is 4 p.m. with a $10 admission. Remember our freedom

The First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution specifically protects the practice of religion in this country. While there have been few exceptions to this rule, mostly in cases where a religion may lead to harm, it has constantly and clearly protected the rights of people to practice in the way they see fit. When a recent story by TBR News Media broke on social media, based on several readers’ comments, it looked like many people were confused when it came to freedom of religion. The article reported on a Stony Brook University graduate wearing a turban, who was refused admission into a Port Jefferson restaurant because the establishment has a noheadgear policy on Friday and Saturday nights. The manager was allegedly sticking to the restaurant’s policy, while either being unaware or ignoring the unconstitutionality of refusing a person service based on religious attire. The customer in question practices Sikhism, where males wear turbans as articles of faith in public. While the restaurant owner said he would change the rule, the event and comments on social media showcase a particular ignorance of the most foundational law in the U.S. Unfortunately, many readers have said they thought the manager had the right to make the call and refuse the graduate service. They are wrong. Our Constitution protects our expression of religion, and the Civil Rights Act of 1964 outlaws discrimination based on race, color, sex, national origin — or religion. Whether a Sikh is wearing a turban, or a Jewish man is wearing a yarmulke, they cannot be asked to remove their head covering in order to get a drink or something to eat, just like service can’t be denied to a nun in her habit or a Muslim woman wearing a hijab. Freedom of religion in this country even protects employees of that restaurant and other businesses when it comes to practicing their religions. State and federal laws, unless causing undue hardship on the operation of business, require employers to make accommodations, within reason, for workers whether they need a break to pray or take a day off to observe their Sabbath or celebrate a religious holiday. The employer may ask them to make up the hours, but they can’t deny an employee time off for religious reasons unless it will be detrimental to a business, for example, due to a small staff. So, whether a Christian can’t work Sundays, or a Muslim needs to take a break to pray, an employer cannot dissuade them from doing so. Employers must also allow dress and grooming practices that employees follow for religious reasons, including not only head coverings but certain hairstyles or facial hair such as the Sikh beard. So, as Americans, whether it’s as a customer or an employee, we are free to practice our religions. Sikhs have been active in the U.S. Armed Forces, where they have been given special exception to wear turbans, while remaining as dedicated as any other service member. As we celebrate Memorial Day, May 27, remembering those who died to protect our rights, let us also not forget the principles that are being protected.

Remember those who lost their lives As our community anxiously awaits the unofficial kickoff of the summer season this Memorial Day weekend, it’s imperative that we never forget the true meaning of this holiday – to honor and remember those who died protecting our cherished freedoms. Throughout our nation’s history, when the call to arms was warranted, Huntington’s brave and courageous never flinched. Countless memorials scattered throughout our township forever remind us of the ultimate sacrifice made by our true hometown heroes. If we look back 50 years ago, our local newspapers on an almost weekly basis contained front page stories of young Huntington men lost on the battlefields of Vietnam. Young men with dreams and ambitions never to return home to their adoring families and friends. Their stories are both tragic and heroic. Several months before being deployed to Vietnam, 22-year-old Winford Allen Nass of Centerport told a local reporter that he did not think he would be in danger. “It shouldn’t be hazardous duty,” Mr. Nass said. “They’ll just send in the equipment and we’ll repair it at the base.” On Sunday, February 23, 1969, Winford lost his life as a result of wounds received during a Viet Cong rocket attack near a rubber plantation that had been overrun by enemy soldiers. The 1966 graduate of Harborfields High School left behind his parents, two sisters and his fiancée.

One month earlier, the Huntington Station community learned that their neighbor, Specialist Four William P. Nogiewich, was killed by friendly fire while attempting to deliver a 25-pound radio into the battlefield. Five months earlier, the 1966 graduate of Huntington High School was wounded in the back but quickly returned to duty. Two months later, he again suffered injuries, this time to his head and leg. “But again,” his father stated at the time, “they patched him up and he was in the front lines.” For his courageous service, William was awarded the Purple Heart, Vietnamese Service Medal, Vietnamese Campaign Medal and National Defense Medal. Because 19-year-old William D. Quinn was eager to fulfill his service as soon as possible, the East Northport resident requested that his draft time be moved up. Less than two months after arriving in Vietnam, the 1967 Northport High School graduate was killed in action near Tay Ninh, where he was stationed with the Fifth Cavalry. In a letter home to his parents, he urged them not to worry. “My son had anything but a military nature,” his mother, Grace Richardson, told a reporter. “He was a gentle person and wrote such beautiful letters to us.” In July of 1969, Peter A. Lehman was scheduled to return to his home in Cold Spring Harbor. He never made it. Just one month before returning to the arms of his beloved fiancée, Peter was killed during combat. The 1965 Northport High School graduate was serving

nearly one year and had earned the Combat Infantry Badge, Purple Heart, Silver Star and Army Commendation Medal with a “V.” A little more than one week before his death, Peter wrote home to his fiancée. “...We ran into a new enemy regiment up here and we are giving them hell. No one in my squad was wounded except me, and don’t worry about it. It’s only a small piece of shrapnel. It’s in my right shoulder. It’s so insignificant they aren’t even going to remove it. So, whatever you do, don’t worry about me. I’ve got the best and most fight’nest squad in the battalion. We bring the ‘max’ on Charlie!” In total, Huntington lost 49 of their courageous sons during the Vietnam War. This year marks the 47th anniversary of the creation of the nation’s first living memorial in honor of those lost in Vietnam. In 1972, a dedicated and caring group of citizens known as Women In Support of Our Men in Vietnam planted 43 Kwanzan cherry trees on the Village Green – each tree representing the loss of a Huntington soldier’s life. In 2010, an additional six trees were added to the memorial to honor those soldiers later killed or declared missing in action. Questions for the posse of presidential candidates

s I write, we are 530 days away from the 2020 election. It’s nice that so many people want to lead this nation. Notwithstanding William Weld, the former Massachusetts governor who is a GOP challenger, it seems clear that the Republican nominee will be President Donald Trump, while the Democratic nominee could come from any of at least 23 candidates — D. None and counting. of the above I’d like to ask these candidates a BY DANIEL DUNAIEF few questions to get the ball rolling. 1. How will you try to unify the nation? Clearly, we are a divided country. We can’t agree

on anything from abortion to gay marriage to the job Trump is currently doing. We have become the Divided States of America. That doesn’t sit well with those of us who have enjoyed the beneﬁts of a country pulling together through so many crises and conﬂicts, and who have appreciated the opportunity to travel from state to state, feeling like a part of something that spreads from sea to shining sea — and to Hawaii, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands and Guam. What will you do in the interest of unity? 2. Is there any way to bring the world closer together? If an extraterrestrial force landed today and threatened society, we would set aside our geographic and historic squabbles, and work together to understand this new species and protect ourselves. Why would it take such a threat to unify humans? Is there any way to spread peace, while allowing for differences? If you believe peace is possible, in what turbulent area would you start and how would you bring any two sides together?

3. Can we establish any political rules? It seems that the old days of agreeing to disagree or civil discourse are gone. Were those measured words and polite disagreements a matter of political correctness and do some candidates beneﬁt from attacking each other? Would all of the candidates agree to a level of respect for each other, for the process and for the American populace? 4. What kind of role model will you be as president? Can you lay out any rules you would follow as president, in terms of what you would do and what you wouldn’t, as our leader? What should the penalty be for you if you don’t follow your own rules? 5. How will you measure your own success? It’s so easy to declare yourself a winner and to tell the country and the world what a great success you are. So many of you will run under the banner of bringing change or steering the nation toward a better or, some might say, great future. Don’t just tell us you’re wonderful, give us an idea of how to recognize it. What metrics

will you use to know that you’re successful? Are the polls more important, or is the economy, the stock market or anything else a good barometer of your success? 6. What will you offer children that they don’t get now? Parents often care more about their children than they do about themselves. What will you do to make schools, food choices, activities or other options better for children than they are today? 7. How will you protect our elections? It’s clear that other nations feel like they can influence our elections. What can you do to ensure that the process proceeds as it should? 8. What’s wonderful or great about your spouse or partner? What do you admire about this person and what is one of your favorite memories with him or her? 9. Do the ends justify the means? Is it as important to ensure that the journey obeys certain rules and that the country follows a specific compass, or is it acceptable to get to the final destination by any means necessary?

oday, May 23, is the birthday of Margaret Fuller. She would be 209 years old. I don’t know if you have ever heard of her. I hadn’t really, maybe vaguely. She was actually born Sarah Margaret Fuller, named after both her grandmothers, until she dropped the ﬁrst name at age 9. She was in other ways a precocious child, too, the oldest of Massachusetts lawyer and Congressman Timothy Fuller’s children, and he taught her to read and write before age 4. Fuller, a Harvard grad, was such a stern teacher that he forbade Between her reading sentiyou and me mental novels and BY LEAH S. DUNAIEF instead gave her what was then, at the beginning of the 19th century, a vigorous

classical education — indeed a rarity for a woman at that time. Margaret Fuller grew up expecting to be exceptional, and she was: as a journalist, editor, literary critic and women’s rights advocate. She strenuously protested slavery, homelessness and other injustices. She advocated for education for women. She also was reputed to be the best read person in all of New England. She was the only woman allowed to use the Harvard library for her research. Her breakthrough book was “Woman in the Nineteenth Century,” considered the ﬁrst major feminist work in the United States, and she was friends and the intellectual equal of such luminaries as Ralph Waldo Emerson, Nathaniel Hawthorne — said to have modeled Hester Prynne after her, Elizabeth Barrett Browning and admired by Edgar Allan Poe. She died in 1850 at age 40 in a shipwreck off Fire Island, with her Italian count husband — if they ever married — and 2-year-old son, within sight of the shoreline. Her ship, the Elizabeth, ran aground on a sandbar as it was being captained by the ﬁrst mate. The event

was in all the metropolitan newspapers four days after the tragedy, once word could get out after the gale passed that had come sweeping up the East Coast, destroying the ship. Fuller had been sent by her publisher, Horace Greeley of the New-York Daily Tribune, to Europe from which she filed dispatches for four years, first from England and then from the 1848 revolutionary wars raging in Italy. In effect, she was this nation’s first female wartime correspondent. Fuller’s life was honored with a book, “Memoirs of Margaret Fuller Ossoli,” a flattering portrait edited jointly by Ralph Waldo Emerson, James Freeman Clarke and William Henry Channing, all of whom rushed to get it out in print before, they feared, her reputation would die. In fact, it was the bestselling book in the United States until Harriet Beecher Stowe’s “Uncle Tom’s Cabin.” Margaret Fuller was a remarkable woman, and I am glad to meet her. wrote a book called “Shipwreck of Hopes,” about the ship Elizabeth, and although this is ﬁction, the author spent a great deal of time getting the historic context right. She traveled to Harvard, poured over original letters and manuscripts, and otherwise discovered that there were thousands of shipwrecks off the Fire Island coast. Yes, thousands! This just happened to be one of them, and this one carried a famous passenger. It is a wonderful thing that we can listen to a writer discuss his or, in this instance, her book and all that went into the writing, dressed in our daytime suburban-casual clothes, enjoying other community members similarly gathered and even a little homemade carrot cake on a given Monday night. In the process we learned some local history and met two worthy women: Margaret Fuller and Angela Reich. We live in a terriﬁc place where such delights — theater, music, documentaries, political debates and book discussions — frequently happen. All we have to do is get off the sofa after dinner and go to them. It’s often hard but so worth the effort.
