Huntington Town Board took the next step needed to transform the New York State Armory in Huntington Station into the James D. Conte Community Center, approving a measure at a meeting last week to spend not more than $436,570 to clean up large amounts of hazardous materials inside the building. The Town Board also voted on a resolution approving the conditions it must meet for a $1.5 million state grant that will be used to continue the building’s transformation into the center, named after the late state Assemblyman James Conte. The site is slated to become a multipurpose venue offering programs and services for both youth and adults. When the town took over the building located on East 5th Street in Huntington Station, officials found asbestos and other unsafe material inside, according to town spokesperson A.J. Carter in a phone interview this week. “Before anything further can be done, the hazardous material has to be removed,” he said.

The Town Board approved a resolution authorizing Unitech Services Group, a Bay Shore business, for the remediation of hazardous material and other work needed done in order to move on to the next step of the transformation. The town’s director of purchasing received sealed bids and Unitech was chosen as the lowest responsible bidder for the project. The work will include asbestos removal, waste disposal, temporary lighting, removal and recycling of mercury wall thermostats, installation of temporary waterproofing and more. The center will serve as a collaborative venue for not-for-profits and other agencies to interact with town initiatives and agencies — such as the Huntington Business Incubator and Huntington Opportunity Resource Center — to uplift the area and improve the lives of residents, according to a previous press release from the town. A date for the project has not been set, as the town has not drawn up any contractual agreements, according to Carter. However, it is expected to begin later this year.

Board to consider hotel, art lofts and apartments By Rohma aBBas

Plans to revitalize Huntington Station are inching closer to fruition, with the town board holding a public hearing next week to jointly consider the environmental impacts of three potential developments that would inject the community with retail, commercial and residential spaces. Renaissance Downtowns, a private developer the town appointed and charged with revitalizing Huntington Station, is spearheading the projects situated along New York Avenue. They include a four-story, 140room hotel with 100,000 square feet of office space; 49 artists’ lofts, which would include residences and gallery space in a three-story building; and 68 residences made up of studios and one-bedroom units to be built above 16,000 square feet of retail space. Andrea Bonilla, the community liaison for Source the Station, a partner of Renaissance Downtowns that solicits ideas for redevelopment in Hun-

tington Station, said the public hearing will allow the board to consider the impacts of all three projects in one hearing, versus considering one at a time, which would take about six to nine months each, she said in an interview this week. “The feeling was if you’re in very close proximity, to do a single environmental impact statement to cover the area,” town spokesman A.J. Carter said last week. It’s a big step forward for Renaissance, and for the area’s revitalization, Ryan Porter, vice president for planning and development at Renaissance Downtowns said this week. “It’s huge,” he said. The three projects represent what Renaissance has identified as “immediate opportunity sites,” meaning they’ll able to be developed within the current sewer district capacity. There’s still work to be done before the projects are in the ground. Once the board considers the environmental impacts under the New York State Environmental Quality Review

process, it can choose to adopt a finding on whether the projects pose a significant impact. If a favorable finding were adopted, Renaissance would begin financing the projects and gaining site plan approval for each lot, Porter said. Porter said he hopes Renaissance breaks ground on the hotel

project by the end of the year. He also said he has already attracted interest from companies such as Marriott and Hilton. The public hearing next week is yet another town board milestone on Renaissance’s road to revitalization of Huntington Station. The most recent was the

town board’s approval of a community benefits agreement in January that spells out job and economic benefits to the surrounding community if Renaissance develops property in Huntington Station. That agreement was the brainchild of a number of local groups, officials have said.

Tulip festival on Sunday By Julianne CuBa

On Sunday, May 3, the 15th Annual Huntington Tulip Festival will take place in Heckscher Park in Huntington. Founded by Councilman Mark Cuthbertson (D) and organized by the Town of Huntington, with chief festival sponsorship support from Astoria Bank, the tulip festival will be home to children’s activity booths, art exhibits and live performances. The festival will begin at 11 a.m., rain or shine. “It’s a small-scale, family-oriented festival that really helps mark the beginning of spring with the blossoming of about 5,000 tulip bulbs,” Cuthbertson said in a phone interview this week. Presented by the Huntington Arts Council, live performances will begin on the Chapin Rainbow Stage at noon. The Gizmo Guys will take the stage first, with a humor-filled performance appropriate for all ages, according to a town press release. The Shinnecock American Indian Dancers will take the stage at 1:30 p.m., with a 45-minute dance presentation that will include audience participation. At 2:15 p.m., the Shinnecock American Indian Dancers will lead the re-enactment of the children’s parade that followed the 1920 dedication of Heckscher Park. It will include a new Tulip Festival Hat Contest for children and adults.

Paul Helou, an award-winning songwriter, actor and journalist, will be the final performer on the Chapin Rainbow Stage, at 3 p.m. Helou “performs a [blend] of bluegrass, Americana, roots and folk music for children that are high-energy, interactive events with quality original songs,” according to the press release. On the same day, the 31st Annual Sheep to Shawl Festival presented by the Huntington Historical Society will take place at the historic Dr. Daniel W. Kissam House Museum and Barn. A free shuttle bus will transport visitors between the festivals.

This year’s race for the Harborfields school board will be a contest. With three openings, five people — including two incumbents — are hoping to snag a seat on the board come May 19. Candidates Chris Kelly, Colleen Rappa, and Suzie Lustig are vying for one of the two seats. Incumbents Donald Mastroi-

anni and board President Dr. Thomas McDonaugh are seeking re-election. Maggie Boba, a former school board member, resigned last year, leaving a vacant seat on the board. Each term is for three years. Chris Kelly The father of three has lived in the area his entire life and has decided to make a run for one of the empty seats. “I’m basically running because I want to help maximize Harborfields students’ entire experience, start to finish,” Kelly said. “I want to make sure we provide all the support parents and teachers need.”

If elected, Kelly said one of his biggest goals is to bring full-day kindergarten to the district, feeling that the district is in desperate need of a fullday program. “I want to create the best education our children can get while being fiscally responsible,” Kelly said. Colleen rappa The 18-year resident and mother of five sons decided to run for the board after observing what has been going on in education. She said she feels people are buying into the commercialization of education, and they don’t understand the real

issues at heart. She also feels local control of education has been taken away from districts. “People drink the Kool-Aid and think one size fits all,” Rappa said. “I want to change the way people think about education.” The former attorney said she has an understanding of educational law and would bring that to the table if elected. She would also like to restore vocational programs and add classes relating to media to help students prepare for the future. “I can connect the dots and I understand the stakeholders and I can come up with the methodology needed,” she said

DonalD Mastroianni Mastroianni, a nine-year incumbent is seeking a fourth term in an effort to finish many of the things started while serving the community. “I’m not running on any specific agenda,” Mastroianni said. “I believe in volunteerism.” The father of three said he would like to finish what he started. Kidney Stones: Get Relief from the Pain and Discomfort

Fifteen percent of Americans will experience the pain of kidney stones at some point in their lives, but there are treatments available that can reduce or eliminate suffering. Jennifer Hill, MD, a urologist at the Arthur Smith Institute for Urology, part of North Shore-LIJ Health System, discusses what you need to know about this condition. Kidney stone disease is not only one of the most common afflictions of modern times, but kidney stones also tend to recur, meaning they develop again after you’ve been treated. If you have formed stones before, a recurrent bout of stone pain is usually easily recognized. The symptoms of kidney stone pain, or renal colic, are: • Severe back pain that is sudden • Nausea and vomiting • The inability to get into a comfortable position • Abdominal pain that wraps around the flank (the side of your body between the ribs and the hip) to the front of the abdomen • Urinary frequency and urgency without much urine passage • Labial, vaginal, penile or testicular pain that is not made worse by touching the area Passing a kidney stone can be painful and time-consuming, but treatment options are available, including: • Medical expulsive therapy — medicine, usually given by an ER physician or urologist, to allow quicker passage of stones • Extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy, or ESWL — a non-invasive treatment for stones using shock waves • Ureteroscopy and laser lithotripsy — a small scope is inserted into the bladder and passed into the ureter to locate and remove stones • Percutaneous nephrolithotomy, or PCNL — endoscopic removal of large stones through a small incision in the back

Car climbing a tree A 27-year-old man from Cold Spring Harbor was arrested in Huntington on April 25 and charged with driving while intoxicated with a blood alcohol concentration of .08 of 1 percent. Police said that on April 25, at about 5:48 a.m., the man was heading west on Holdsworth Drive in Huntington when he drove up an embankment at Oakwood Road and struck a tree. Stolen car, pills and a fake check Police arrested a 50-year-old man from Huntington on April 23 and charged him with fourth-degree criminal possession of stolen property, seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance and second-degree possession of a forged instrument. Police said that at the corner of Kerri Court and Park Avenue in Huntington after midnight, the man was found to be operating a stolen 2002 Toyota. He was also found with prescription pills without a prescription and also appeared to possess a fraudulent check. Halloween shenanigans A 17-year-old from East Northport was arrested in Huntington on April 24 and charged with third-degree criminal tampering. Police said that on Halloween last year at 8:55 p.m. on Wendy Lane in Elwood, he intentionally ran through a vinyl fence, damaging it. He was arrested at 4:40 p.m. at the precinct. Brawler busted Police arrested a 50-year-old man from St. James on April 20 in Huntington and charged him with third-degree assault, with intent to cause physical injury. On March 27 at about 7:40 a.m., police said the man grabbed another male by his sweatshirt on New York Avenue and both individuals fell to the ground. The man then punched the victim in the face. The victim suffered a broken nose, concussion and required medical atten-

tion, including stitches. He was arrested at the 2nd Precinct. Persistent thief thwarted Police said a 32-year-old East Northport man was arrested on April 26 at his home on Loret Lane in East Northport and charged with a flurry of petit larcenies in the area spanning March 25 to April 4. Sometime between March 25 and March 26 on Norton Drive in East Northport, he stole ear buds, a phone charger and cash. On March 26 at about 1:50 a.m., he stole Ray-Ban sunglasses and cash from a home on Joseph Court. That same day, he stole two portable DVD players and phone chargers from another home on Joseph Court. Sometime between April 3 at 8 p.m. and April 4 at 4:30 a.m., he stole an iPhone 5 and iPod from Tanager Lane in Fort Salonga. He also took a Garmin GPS sometime between April 3 at 11 p.m. and April 4 at 6 a.m. from a location at Gilder Court in Fort Salonga. Police said that at Bobolink Lane in Fort Salonga the man stole prescription pills. Window broken in bar fight A window was broken during a fight at Finley’s of Greene Street in Huntington on April 26 at 3 a.m., police said. Man stabbed Someone told police he was stabbed by an unknown person in a parking lot on West Hills Road in Huntington on April 26. The call came in at about 4:20 a.m. The victim said he required medical treatment. Temple looted Someone took money from a locked file cabinet drawer at Temple Beth El on Park Avenue in Huntington sometime March 31 and April 14. The school board race in Cold Spring Harbor looks to be a quiet one this year, as two incumbents will be running unopposed for the two open seats on the board. The terms of board president Anthony Paolano and board member Ingrid Wright are up this year, and Paolano is most likely making his final run for reelection, the 15-year veteran said in a phone interview Tuesday. immediate test that showed his heart was functioning at less than 20 percent capacity. Doctors had to install a defibrillator, which delivers a dose of electrical energy to the heart, because Siems was at risk of cardiac arrest. The condition was manageable with medication until last September, when Martines noticed something wasn’t right with her son. “His heart started to fail,” Martines said. Doctors found 80 pounds of fluid in his body as a result of congestive heart failure. He was rushed to Huntington Hospital and than airlifted to Westchester Medical Center in Valhalla, where he went into severe cardiac arrest. “He was dying,” his mom said. Siems underwent surgery and was living because a machine and a mechanical device helped his heart beat, Martines said. Finally, in November, he was well enough to come home and his mom stepped in to tend to him as they patiently waited for a heart. While he was a priority on the donor list, some people can wait as long as 20 years, according to Siems’ doctor Alan Gass, the family’s cardiologist. Gass said Siems was in need of a transplant and was lucky his wait was just months instead of years. Another factor helping the young man with his condition was his age, the doctor said. “Young people can compensate well, even though they are getting worse quicker,” Gass said. But while Siems was able to compensate, young people fall apart quickly, and his heart was deteriorating even though he was being treated for his condition. The need for a heart was vital. On Saturday, just 12 hours after appearing at a press conference with County Executive Steve Bellone (D) in an effort to

promote organ donation, Siems received the call that a heart was ready for him. The family got into the car to drive to the hospital in Valhalla and anxiously waited for the surgery. At 7 a.m., the family said their goodbyes as Siems was wheeled off to get the heart he had been desperately waiting for. While her son was getting prepped for the surgery, Martines was pacing back and forth, and ultimately she came in contact with the doctors who had her son’s new heart in a cooler. The small amount of doubt she had disappeared, as she said she knew her son was going to be just fine. “I just couldn’t believe it,” she said. “It made it real that it was really happening.” After a few minor complications and 14 hours in surgery, Siems’ new heart was in his chest and ready to go. And while he was unable to speak following his surgery, he used a pen and paper to let his loved ones and doctor know he was doing just fine. “The best I felt in five years,” the white piece of paper read. The family teared up at the note. Siems’ dad, Gerald “Gerry” Siems, who was also a heart transplant recipient, died in 2013. The young man is expected to stay in the hospital for roughly two weeks, according to Gass. In a few weeks, he will be able to return to a normal life, which entails playing sports and doing what he loves. While Siems’ story ended well, the wait for organ donations may be far too long for some people. According to LiveOnNY, a nonprofit organ donor network, roughly 10,000 New Yorkers are waiting for various organ donations at any given time. On average, 18 people die every day while waiting for organ transplants in the U.S., according to the group’s website. Anthony PAolAno The father of three, who has two kids that graduated from the district and one in high school, Paolano held the position of president three times during his tenure. He said this would most likely be his last run, as he is hoping to give other people in the community a chance to join the board. Paolano said he decided to run again because he believes the district will see transitions in the administration and the board over the next few years. Before retiring, he would like to pass down his experience to many of the new board members still in their first terms. “I believe with my experience I can help the other board members understand what we did in the past,” Paolano said. “I want to give a little bit of my experience so as I move on, they understand the background.” During his next three-year term, Paolano hopes to maintain smaller class sizes. He also hopes to resolve the ongoing negotiations with the teachers’ con-

She feels her background in banking and finance is a great asset she brings to the board with regard to financial matters.

If elected, Lustig said she would like to create a three- to five-year plan that will help the district stay on task if there are funding cuts in the future. She would also like to create an education committee to share ideas on curriculum, events and more and analyze what is going on in the district and community. She said she would also research ways to bring the district more revenue.

AND FURTHER NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN, that a copy of the statement of the amount of money which will be required to fund the School District’s budget for 2015-16, exclusive of public monies, may be obtained by any resident of the District between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m., prevailing time, beginning May 4, 2015, except Saturday, Sunday or holidays, at the District Office, 2 Oldfield Road, Greenlawn, New York and at each school house in the District. The exemption report shall be posted on any bulletin board maintained by the District for public notices and on any website maintained by the District. AND FURTHER NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN, that petitions nominating candidates for the office of member of the Board of Education shall be filed with the Clerk of said School District at her office in the Administration Building, 2 Oldfield Road, Greenlawn, New York, not later than April 20, 2015, between 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m., prevailing time. Vacancies on the Board of Education are not considered separate, specific offices; candidates run at large. Take easy precautions to prevent crime Sun’s out, thieves out. As Long island heats up after a long, cold winter, so does criminal behavior. We’ve been seeing more and more reports of larcenies, burglaries and stolen property as the weather warms up. it may tick up from here into summer, which would be nothing new in the world of crime patterns. But many of these incidents can be avoided if people would just use their heads. That means locking our cars when we’re not in them, and not leaving purses and other valuables inside — and especially not in full view of every passerby. it also means turning the cars off and not leaving the keys inside. one of our reporters once called the police after spotting an idling but empty car in a parking lot, the lights on and the driver’s side door ajar. About five minutes later, a man who may or may not have been the owner got into the car and drove away. Leaving a car running and walking away from it is foolish, whether we are in a parking lot or in front of our own house. Why tempt fate? We should also remember to close the windows in our houses when we aren’t there. This one is tricky because it’s hot outside and there could be a lot of windows open. But we should all be in the habit of doing it just like we are in the habit of locking our front doors, because open windows can make an easy access point for burglars. Sometimes we cannot prevent a criminal from breaking in and stealing something, but we can reduce our risk by securing our belongings as much as possible.

To ThE EdiTor: Your recent article “State pol aims to boost green energy in schools” (April 16), regarding alternative energy legislation to help school districts fund the use of solar panels, was disturbing. Why should we be looking to lease solar panels when the price of solar panels has decreased by 75 percent in recent years? Solar panels are no long unaffordable. The school districts should buy them outright and reap all the savings in electric charges down the line. To lease the solar panels from [Wisconsin-based technology and energy-savings solutions company] Johnson Controls seems to be an unnecessary expense. it would be giving Johnson Controls too much “control” over our tax dollars. A new Environment New York research & Policy Center report, Shining Cities, found that New York City ranks 9th in the nation for solar power installations, with enough solar online at the end of last year to power more than 6,300 homes. As centers of population and energy consumption, cities like New York City are taking the logical lead in this solar energy boom. Through creative and forward-thinking policies like New York City’s “Solar Empowerment Zones,” cities nationwide are encouraging local lending for solar

hen you’re meeting deadlines every week, dealing with angry clients, when traffic takes forever for an important meeting or when body parts that all worked together for all those years now seem to be pulling in opposite directions, it’s easy to let the whole notion of romance slip. Sure, we have Mother’s Day,

Father’s Day, birthdays and Valentine’s Day — well, you have Valentine’s Day. I’m not a big fan of mass, romantic gestures on cue that support the card and flower industries, when we can make our boyfriends, girlfriends, husbands or wives feel special. But, much of the time, especially when we’ve got kids who have mastered the art of playing on our last nerve with the kinds of conversations that are soaked in sarcasm and disrespect, we might find it a tad challenging to find the time, energy and resources to raise the level of our romantic game. And yet, one day our children, who just yesterday seemed to have absolutely no use for the opposite sex, have made that remarkable transition from whispering to each other about who they like to mustering the courage to speak to that person. Recently, our daughter and her friends have been pulled

into the whirlwind of an eighthgrade formal. The communication network is extraordinarily efficient and reliable. Everyone, it seems, knows who is asking everyone else. It’s too bad they can’t add some algebra to the messages they’re all delivering to each other or, perhaps, a few Latin phrases that might be on an AP exam. As an aside, it’s too bad meteorologists, who still seem to be living with egg on their faces from the big blizzard miss of 2015, can’t develop a forecasting model with the same level of middle school accuracy. These kids seem to have taken a page from the birds on suburban streets, who sing loudly through the day, calling to their would-be partners to come share some quality time in their cheery, oak, maple and dogwood trees. One boy interrupted everyone’s lunch in the cafeteria, took a microphone and asked a girl to the formal.

Another suitor, who wanted to go to the dance with a softball player, took softballs and wrote one letter on each ball, to spell out “formal”? And, speaking of sporting equipment, another courageous boy filled a girl’s locker with ping pong balls, which spilled out on the floor when she opened it. In the back of her locker, he’d put a note saying he finally found enough, uh, balls to ask her to the dance. She said “yes.” There have been a few broken hearts and a few near misses, with a girl saying “yes” to someone just as another boy approached her with flowers. Those flowers suffered an unfortunate fate in the hands of the tardy suitor. Learning that a boy she didn’t want to accompany to the dance planned to ask her at an after-school activity, another girl changed her plans and was suddenly missing in action. Fortunately, it seems that, on balance, the anxiety level and

frustration is considerably lower than the amusement these classmates have for this process. As the boys are finding increasingly clever ways to ask the girls to the dance, I can’t help wondering if adult women and men find a similar satisfaction with a good romantic comedy or chick flick once in a while. The sound of those birds singing outside our homes may be just as recognizable and pleasant as a part of the courtship dance to men as they are to women — or indeed to the growing children. recent editorial in The New York Times decried a blatant act of antiSemitism in Europe. Fans in a major soccer stadium in Holland chanted “Hamas, Hamas, Jews to the gas,” and “Jews burn the best.” The home team, FC Utrecht, subsequently apologized for the outrage that occurred in a game against Ajax Amsterdam on April 5, but just imagine how someone Jewish in the stands might feel in the midst of those shocking outcries. Worse, it was not an isolated incident. Kick It Out, a Brit-

ish watchdog organization, has reported that there were 59 instances of anti-Semitic slurs in the first half of the English Premier League soccer season, with chants of “Yids” and “Kill the Jews” at games. According to the Simon Wiesenthal Center, a human rights organization, there seems to be a new alliance between neo-Nazis and jihadists. After the terrible consequences of anti-Semitism in Europe in the previous century, it is hard to believe such bigotry still exists, much less is alive and flourishing for the rest of the world to witness. What is anti-Semitism today and how did it start? According to columnist David Brooks, there are three strains of anti-Semitism circulating now. The first is in the Middle East, where it feels like “a deranged theoretical system for making sense of a world gone astray,” according to Brooks. Iran’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, calls Israel the “sinister, unclean rabid dog of the region,” whose leaders “look like beasts and cannot be called human.” Iran’s President Hassan

Rouhani “reinstated a conference of Holocaust deniers and anti-Semitic conspiracy theorists,” who propagate the usual conspiracist idiocy about Jews drinking the blood of non-Jews and spraying pesticides across arable lands. “This sort of anti-Semitism thrives where there aren’t that many Jews,” according to Brooks. “The Jew is not a person but an idea, a unique carrier of transcendent evil: a pollution, a stain, a dark force responsible for the failures of others, the unconscious shame and primeval urges they feel in themselves, and everything that needs explaining. This is a … flight from reality even in otherwise sophisticated people.” Incredibly it can be a part of the architecture of society and taught repeatedly in some madrassas or schools to children. “It cannot be reasoned away,” said Brooks, “because it doesn’t exist on the level of reason.” “In Europe,” Brooks continued, “anti-Semitism looks like a response to alienation. It’s particularly high where unemployment is rampant. … The plague of violence is fueled by young

In the United States, which Brooks pronounced “an astonishingly non-anti-Semitic place,” nonetheless there is rising tide of anti-Semitism, especially on college campuses, with its basis seemingly in Israel’s policies toward Palestinians in Gaza and the West Bank. But why the policies of Israel should reflect on Jews in America any more than policies in Ireland reflected on the Irish in Boston, or the discriminatory and shameful treatment of Japanese Americans interned during World War II should have ensued, is simply bigotry. And anti-Semitism is a particularly virulent form of bigotry whose dark underside is hatred leading to violence and even extinction. History is filled with brutal examples including the pogroms, which preceded the First Crusade in 1096; the expulsion from England in 1290; the persecutions of the Spanish Inquisition and expulsion from Spain in 1492; the

Cossack massacres in Ukraine, 1648-57; the pogroms in Imperial Russia between 1821-1906; the Dreyfus affair in France, 18941906; and the more recent horrors of the 20th century, just for a historical overview. It’s an evil virus that sometimes hides but does not die. Brooks suggested that the best response is confrontation, arousing the “brave and decent people” to take “a page from Gandhi” and stage demonstrations, as laws and governments reign in even the smallest assaults. “Disturb the consciences of the good people. … Confrontational nonviolence is the historically proven method to isolate and delegitimize social evil.” Is that enough? We seem to have conquered or, at least, mitigated the virus causing AIDS. Perhaps against this form of racism, we can together do the same?
