That’s why The Whaling Museum, 301 Main St., Cold Spring Harbor, has teamed up with the Cold Spring Harbor Library for a new book club, Reading Between the Waves, with support from Humanities New York. Suggested donation to each session is $6 per person, free for museum and library patrons. Honored Coach
Northport High School varsity lacrosse coach Carol Rainson-Rose was recently selected as one of 23 high school coaches from across the country as a 2019 National Coach of the Year. The National Federation of State High School Coaches Association has been recognizing coaches through the awards program since 1982 and selects individuals based on the coaches’ records, affiliation with coaching and other professional organizations, community involvement and coaching philosophy. Rainson-Rose brought lacrosse to the high school back in 1990 and has been coaching the Tigers for 31 years. Having played the game herself both in high school and in college, she said that she wanted to share that passion with others. “It’s my little dynasty,” she said. “To be able to teach young women the game that I love so that they can take their game to the next level and just have some fun.” This year, the Tigers won their second state championship, ending their season with a 21-1 record. The team’s next season will start in March and run through the end of June. “Carol has certainly made her mark as an educator and coach. Her commitment and passion for girls lacrosse, along with her incredible work ethic and love for her student

William J. Cicio, of Northport and formerly of Setauket, died Jan. 23 at 89 years of age. He was the loving husband of the late Helen, beloved father of Laura (Kevin) Cicio-Healion and William (Cristina) Cicio. He was also the cherished grandfather of Jessica (Chris) DiNapoli, Cammi

Kenneth J. Naughton
Kenneth J. Naughton, of Smithtown and formerly of Northport, died suddenly Dec. 30, at 60 years of age. Ken was a graduate of Northport High School, class of 1977, and Georgia Southern, class of 1986. He was an avid baseball player and fan and a true outdoorsman. He was the beloved husband of In-Sun (Mina) and loving father of James. He was also the dear son of the late James and the late Grace Naughton; beloved brother of Kathleen (Robert) Donovan and Leanne (Jeffrey) Cole; and caring uncle of Zachary, Christopher and Jack. A graveside service was held Jan. 7 at Trinity Cemetery, Rainbow Lane, Amityville.

Reactions to Town Officials Vow to Reassert Oversight School Relocation of Northport Power Plant Emissions

BY DONNA DEEDY DESK@TBRNEWSMEDIA.COM Just days after the state’s Department of Health confirmed higher than expected levels of cancer among young adults in the Northport community, three Huntington Town Board members vowed to reassert its authority over Long Island Power Authority. Council members Joan Cergol (D), Eugene Cook (R) and Mark Cuthbertson (D) said at a Jan. 24 press event that they will vote as a majority at the Feb. 11 town meeting, at 7 p.m., to require that LIPA submits copies of emissions reports to town administrators. The plant’s original site plan approval had required that the utility, then Long Island Lighting Company known as LILCO, regularly submitted emission records to town officials. But the town has not yet found records to show that LIPA has fulfilled its obligation. State Sen. Jim Gaughran (D-Northport) said that LIPA is legally required to comply with conditions outlined in the site plans, when LIPA took over LILCO in the 1997 public bailout. “It is shocking that a state public authority [LIPA] doesn’t even understand the authority that they have and it’s shameful they don’t even understand their basic legal obligation to the people they’re supposed to serve,” he said. “LIPA is the successor to LILCO, and they have the ultimate responsibility to act.” The Town of Huntington, after searching its archives in a response to a Times of Huntington Freedom of Information Law request, has uncovered the site plans for all four generation units. The records show that town officials, while they successively approved over time beginning in 1965 the construction of four generation units, they also had serious concerns about the plant’s potential health impact on the community. One clause in the Town Board resolution dated June 17, 1969, stated: “The ambient air shall not contain toxic or deleterious substances in concentrations or level that affect human health, safety, welfare or well-being, or interfere with the enjoyment of property or unreasonably or adversely affect plant or animal life.” According to a state Department of Environmental Permit Review Report dated Feb. 4, 2019, “The Northport Power Station emits oxides of nitrogen in excess of the major facilities threshold, 25 tons per year for the New York City metropolitan area.” “We need to know if the Northport power plant’s emissions are a factor in the alarmingly

increased cancer risk in the Northport-East Northport community,” said Cook. Meanwhile, the state Department of Health in recent letter to a Northport resident diagnosed with cancer said it expects its health investigation to take 18 months. It noted that its health study on Northport community will be unable to prove a cause-and-effect relationship. It will provide information about the conditions under which cancer occurred. National Grid has stated in an email that its operations are in compliance with all state and federal standards. The DEC in its Permit Review Report also said on page 6 that the plant is in compliance with “all requirements.” But it stated on page 2 that the Northport plant is in “severe non-attainment” for ambient air quality standards for ozone emissions. Ozone air quality standards, though, are regulated on a regional basis. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency classifies all facilities in the New York metropolitan area in “severe non-attainment” for ozone emissions, according to DEC spokesperson Kevin Frazier. Ozone, according to the American Lung Association, is currently one of the least wellcontrolled pollutants in the United States and also one of the most dangerous. It is formed when nitrogen oxides from smokestacks and tailpipes combine with volatile organic compounds. It affects mainly the heart and lungs. At the Jan 24 press event, Gaughran said that the facility has violated emission standards for particulate matter. A few days after the press conference,
LIPA sent a letter to Gaughran dated Jan. 28 saying, that there was “inaccurate” information released about the Jan. 24 event. According to LIPA, the senator misread reports on violating air pollution standards, which are publicly available on the DEC website. “The DEC has made no such finding regarding the Northport Power Station,” the letter signed by LIPA general counsel, Anna Chacko, read. The letter continues to say that the report applies to a larger area which includes New York City, Long Island, Westchester County as well as Northern New Jersey and Fairfield County, Connecticut. “There are many causes for our region being an ozone ‘non-attainment’ area, including stationary sources, automobile emissions, and emissions from other regions,” Chacko wrote. “As you may be aware, the New York attorney general, among others, has sued [the EPA] as a ‘downwind state’ because New York believes the emissions of ‘upwind states’ contribute to ozone on Long Island.” In a statement dated Jan. 29, Gaugran said, “I’m pleased LIPA has heeded my calls for transparency, and is finally directing their subcontractor, National Grid, to release reports to the town.” However, he did not respond to the air pollution issue. The trial portion of LIPA’s tax case against the Town of Huntington over the value of the Northport Power Station was wound up in the state Supreme Court in Riverhead last July, and a final ruling is still awaited. Following the closure of Northport Middle School after elevated levels of benzene were found in two separate septic systems near the building, district officials and the community are adjusting to the relocation of more than 600 middle school students into three different schools. The plan called for eight-graders to relocate to Northport High School, for seventh-graders to go to East Northport Middle School, and for sixth-graders to settle in at Norwood Avenue Elementary School beginning Jan. 24. Superintendent Robert Banzer said the first several days in their new buildings have gone well for NMS students. “I was happy to hear of how welcoming each school was to the NMS students on their first days, and I anticipate that their efforts to ensure a caring environment will continue,” he said. “As we move through this transition our families have been extremely patient and flexible.” Rich Rowehl, a Northport parent who has a daughter in the seventh grade, said the first week of the transition has gone as good as it could have. “To be able to pull off what they did [in a short amount of time] is a monumental task,” he said. “I condemned the district for doing this and I hope going forward we can find a workable [permanent] solution.” The transition is still a work in progress, Rowehl said. Parents expressed concerns about crowded lunchrooms and lack of lockers at the board of education meeting that night. Sixth-graders at Norwood Avenue Elementary School don’t have access to lockers. Seventh-graders were moved into a larger cafeteria at ENMS due to the size of the class. The superintendent acknowledged that they are still ironing out some logistical issues. Rowehl stressed that this is still an ongoing process and there’s a lot that needs to come out. “The firm is still conducting tests [at NMS],” he said. “We have to wait to see what else it finds. Then is it safe to return or does the school need to permanently close? We know they found mercury/ benzene but what else is there?” The Northport resident said the committee and district need to continue to be transparent on what the firm finds and strive to find a permanent solution that will make everyone happy. Ideas from community members and parents have been floated around. Due to decreasing enrollment in the district, one of the elementary schools could be repurposed as a new middle school, or possibly the William J. Brosnan administrative building could be reopened as a school. Banzer said there has been no discussion of a permanent plan outside of the closure of the building for the remainder of this school year, adding that PW Grosser Consulting will continue its testing and review all data prior to finalizing the report to the district.

Huntington Station Parents Arrested After Failing to Surrender Son to CPS On. Jan. 28, Suffolk County police arrested the parents of a 3-year-old boy who was reported missing after they allegedly failed to surrender him to the custody of Child Protective Services earlier this month. Selina Elswick, 32, and Thomas Sollas, 43, both of Huntington Station, were both charged with endangering the welfare of a child and custodial interference second degree. Elswick was additionally held on a warrant from Suffolk County Family Court and was held overnight at the 4th Precinct. Sollas was
held overnight at the 5th Precinct, and both were arraigned at 1st District Court in Central Islip Jan. 29. Elswick was scheduled to return her son to Suffolk County Family Court in Central Islip Jan. 22 and failed to appear. When representatives from CPS attempted to take custody of the child at the family’s residence in Commack Jan. 22, it was discovered that the two had moved out of the residence Jan. 16. CPS then contacted the Suffolk County Police Department to report the child missing.

Editorial Perspective Deny Fear, Think Practically Your Turn: Growing Up at ‘Kobe Bryant’s High School’
“Fear is the mind killer.” It’s a recurring phrase found in the seminal writing of Frank Herbert’s 1965 book “Dune.” Despite the complicated jumbling of sci-fi jargon and galactic themes of power, religion and politics, the one phrase sticks out, touching on a basic fact of human existence, and the ever-present element of terror in the hearts of humanity. We experience that same overriding fear again and again, such as now when reading about the current outbreak of the coronavirus from China. There have already been five people announced to have caught the virus in the U.S. That is out of 110 people who are currently being investigated for having the virus, where over 30 have come back negative. New York City has yet to have seen a particular person come forward with the virus, but city hospitals are making preparations knowing it’s only a matter of time, according to The New York Times. Long Island is in much the same way making such preparations, with Stony Brook University Hospital and other Long Island health centers putting plans into effect. This isn’t some kind of new, alien virus. The coronavirus has been around for many years, and causes respiratory illnesses in animals, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. This new strain of the virus is being called the 2019 novel coronavirus. Deaths, experts say, have mostly been the elderly or those with underlying health conditions. There’s something primordially horrifying of the prospect of disease, and despite our modern sensibilities we still have not eclipsed that fear. There was swine flu during 2008 and 2009. There was Ebola in 2018. However, the coronavirus is not something to simply tune out. The death toll has now exceeded 132 persons, all of them in China, and there have been a reported approximately 4,500 cases confirmed, with some scientists saying the number of infections could be higher. That is not to say these diseases do not kill people, nor that they did not have to be met by concerted efforts of government and civilian medical professionals. But panicked reactions to such outbreaks rarely help. Factcheck.org posted its own data points of misinformation spread about the virus, with some on social media inaccurately saying there are 10s or 100s of thousands dead, when that’s simply not true or at all confirmed. The U.S. has already strongly suggested canceling any nonessential visits to China. Transport within the epicenter for the virus is already heavily restricted by Chinese officials. The CDC has said the virus can travel from person to person, so the agency has suggested that if one must travel, then they should avoid contact with obviously sick people, as well as with animals, both alive or dead, and animal markets. A person traveling should also wash their hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, or with hand sanitizer if no soap is available. Of course, we at TBR News Media will try to keep abreast of any new developments of the disease from the local angle and put any such updates on our website, but we also ask you don’t let the fear kill you, body and mind.

Most would probably agree that LM is an above-average public school, but they’d also probably agree that it’s not particularly extraordinary, except for one reason. Top 10 Republican Solutions to the Bolton Problem
W
hat should the Republicans do about former National Security Adviser John Bolton? In this topsy-turvy battle in Washington, Bolton has become a lightning bolt with his claims about his recent boss, President Donald Trump (R). So, the Republicans, particularly under Trump, have a playbook for dealing with disaffected former D. None staffers. Pretend no one knew him and that he
wasn’t significant. The president has used that approach with other people with varying levels of success. The problem is that there were far too many pictures and meetings. For crying out loud, the guy was the national security adviser. Disavowing any knowledge or contact with him strains the willing suspension of disbelief required for so many other excuses. Let’s pass on that one. 9. Claim he’s trying to make money on a book. That’s what some have suggested, ignoring that he might be trying to make money and be telling the truth. 8. Insist that the book is a national security threat. That’s a technique the president has said he’d use to keep everyone else from testifying during his hotly contested impeachment trial. 7. Suggest that Trump would “love” to have him testify, but that someone else — a lawyer, a member of the FBI or CIA, or someone in the shadows who the president and his staff feel has a valid argument — has suggested that his testifying would destroy the Constitution, ruin the presidency or alter the course of history in
a negative way for everyone. 6. Create a new, outlandish and riveting conspiracy theory. Maybe he’s still John Bolton, but the Democrats, and in particular House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, got a hold of him and somehow figured out how to reprogram him. This is doubly delicious, like a cheeseburger with extra bacon, deep fried in lard, because it unites Bolton with Pelosi and suggests that he’s lying and has sold his soul to a lower form of political being. 5. Develop a diversion. (Don’t you love alliteration?) Come up with a Mideast peace plan, a Chinese trade policy, a cure for coronavirus or a way to provide energy that removes the hippy-dippy greenhouse gases and cools the Earth. The short attention spans will seize on this as the one and only part of the news that’s worth covering. Surely, with all the events of the world, the drama, the excitement and the immediate need to feed the news beast, there must be some way to send eyeballs elsewhere, turning Bolton into an afterthought.
4. Ban anyone with a bushy, white mustache from entering the Senate chamber. The Democrats and all their supporters picked on Bolton mercilessly when he became national security adviser, focusing on his facial hair. Surely it’s fair to suggest that this defining characteristic makes him untrustworthy? 3. Give him the wrong time and day to show up. When he doesn’t arrive, suggest that he must have had a change of heart and it’s time to move on with a process that has a predetermined ending anyway. 2. Someone to whom Bolton lied could claim that the former national security adviser didn’t always tell the truth, which would undermine anything Bolton claimed the president said. 1. Let him testify. Bolton was always part of a Republican plan anyway. Once Republicans allow him to come before the Senate, he can deny the “leaks,” undermining the credibility of the media and the Democrats. In return, he can get another position, like maybe an ambassadorship?
