The mayor said she has sent a similar inquiry to the town board as was raised by Cartright regarding the life of the applicant’s special use permit, though has yet to hear back from Brookhaven. A representative from Sierra Club Long Island, a local chapter of the national nonprofit dedicated to environmental advocacy, spoke out against Caithness II during the June 26 hearing. “The Sierra Club strongly opposes any attempt to construct a new gas plant on Long Island, and we oppose the Caithness II proposal regardless of the technology involved,” said Shay O’Reilly, an organizer for the nonprofit. “It is absurd to argue that building more fracked gas infrastructure will allow us to meet our clean energy and pollution reduction goals.”

They’ve got the power. Brookhaven Town voted 6-0 with one abstention in favor of lifting a restrictive covenant on an application by Caithness Energy LLC to construct a new, 600-megawatt energy generation plant in Yaphank at a July 12 meeting. When the board approved the independent power producer’s initial 2014 application, when it sought to construct a 750-megawatt facility, it imposed strict regulations aimed at preventing Caithness from making any changes to its plans, or face starting over from square one getting approvals. The power company asked town officials to lift the covenant for its present-day plans that feature newly available technology — which is what required the second vote, preceded by a June 26 public hearing. Councilwoman Valerie Cartright (D-Port Jefferson Station) abstained from the July 12 vote after voting against the application in 2014, which passed 5-2. Supervisor Ed Romaine (R) voted “no” in 2014, but approved the lifting of the restrictive covenant this time around. “In requiring such covenant proposed in 2015, the town board did not intend to require the applicant return for covenant amendments when technology changes or improves, or to construct a less impactful energy generating facility,” Brookhaven Town Attorney Annette Eaderesto read from her office’s findings on the matter. “In fact, the town board finds that in consideration of the health, safety and welfare of the residents of the town, the town shall not regulate or restrict the technology that may be used by the applicant.” Caithness President Ross Ain said in a statement the company was pleased to hear the town had repealed the restriction. “We now look forward to consideration and approval of the site plan filed with the planning board for what will be the region’s cleanest, most fuel-efficient and most waterconserving power plant,” Ain said. Cartright explained she was abstaining from the vote to repeal the restrictive covenant because she thought a vote to either approve or disapprove of the entire Caithness application would be more appropriate. She also raised a concern about the special-use permit issued to Caithness in 2014, which according to her interpretation of town law, expired July 15, 2018. “That’s under consideration,” Eaderesto said of Cartright’s concern in a phone interview. The town attorney said she expected the planning board to decide if Caithness will be required to reapply for the special-use permit for the Yaphank site this week. Don Miller, a spokesman for Caithness Energy, did not respond to a question raised by email regarding Cartright’s suggestion the company’s special-use permit expired Sunday. The renewed Caithness request comes as Port Jefferson Village and the town have said a settlement is nearing in an eight-year-long legal fight with Long Island Power Authority over the utility company’s contention that its Port Jeff plant’s property taxes are overassessed based on decreasing energy demand. The settlement would smooth the impact of a potential substantial loss of revenue for the village, Port Jefferson School District, Port Jefferson Free Library and Port Jefferson Fire Department based on a reduced assessment of the plant. It would also prevent the village from being held liable for years of back payments should it have chosen to play out the legal battle in court and lost rather than settling the case. The village has argued a way to make good with LIPA over its decreasingly needed plant could be to increase its output capacity. If constructed, the Caithness II plant, which would be built near to the company’s first Yaphank plant opened in 2009, could theoretically kill plans to repower the Port Jefferson plant. However, according to Ain, as of June 26 LIPA has made no commitment to purchase power from the company should a second facility be constructed in Yaphank. It does purchase power from the first Caithness plant. The June 26 public hearing drew comments from those in favor of the proposal, many of whom being Longwood school

district residents who would likely see a reduction in property taxes, similar to what Port Jeff residents enjoy currently for housing the Port Jefferson Power Station. Environmental groups and other residents opposed the plan, as did Port Jefferson Village Mayor Margot Garant and state Assemblyman Steve Englebright (D-Setauket), who each submitted statements to be read into the record by Cartright against the proposal and urging the board to vote it down June 26. “The construction of a Caithness II facility will have the inevitable effect of pushing our community off the economic cliff at the end of the proposed period of gradual reductions, while leaving us to deal with an enormous, closed, unusable industrial site which will need serious environmental remediation,” Garant said in her letter read by Cartright.

“Teaching to the test” is a concept that no longer computes in Comsewogue School District. Administration and faculty in Comsewogue, for the last two school years, have experimented with a problem-based learning curriculum for small groups of interested ninth- and 10th-graders, an alternative to the traditional educational strategy of focusing assignments and assessments toward the goal of performing well on statemandated standardized tests at the end of the year. Now, Superintendent Joe Rella has data to back up his notorious aversion to one-size-fits-all education and assessment. In all subjects, Comsewogue students in PBL classes passed 2018 Regents exams, scoring 65 or better, at a higher rate than those in traditional classrooms, according to data released by the district. On chemistry, geometry, algebra II, global history and English 11 exams, PBL students achieved mastery level, scoring 85 or better, at significantly higher rates than their non-PBL classmates. “We played in your ballpark — we scored runs,” Rella said of how he interpreted the data, meaning students taught by alternative methods still displayed an aptitude on the state’s required tests. Though Rella and the district have taken steps to try to have PBL assessments replace Regents exams, no avenue to do so has been green lighted by the New York State Department of Education to this point for Comsewogue. Emails requesting comment on the significance of Comsewogue’s test results sent to the education department and Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s (D) press office were not returned. During the 2017-18 school year, about half of Comsewogue’s ninth- and 10th-graders, roughly 300 students, took part voluntarily in PBL classes, which emphasize hands-on learning and real-world application of concepts as assessments — similar to a master’s thesis or doctoral dissertation — as opposed to the traditional “Regents model.” The students were still required by the state to take the Regents exams as all students are, and their performance has inspired the district in year three of the pilot to expand its PBL curriculum offerings on a voluntary basis for 2018-19 to its entire student body — kinder-

garten through 12th grade. The superintendent said the impetus for the district to experiment with PBL started three years ago, when he and about 20 Comsewogue teachers spent a day at the New York Performance Standards Consortium in Manhattan. The organization was founded on the belief that there was a better way to assess student learning than dependence upon standardized testing, according to its website. “In traditional settings, the teacher did most of the work, we listened, we copied notes and then we were tested on it,” Rella said. “The way the structure was, you spent a year learning stuff. At the end of the year, you took a test to see what you knew.” In PBL classrooms, regardless of subject, Rella explained that a problem is initially presented, and students learn skills that are meant to help them practically find an answer to the problem. One group of PBL students during the 2017-18 school year decided to approach opioid addiction as a subject matter. Rella said chemistry students and English students worked on parallel tracks addressing that problem, with the science classes researching and presenting on the science behind addiction and the brain, and the English classes creating a public service announcement on the topic. The students presented and defended their findings and approach to the Suffolk County Legislature, with two students eventually being asked to join the county’s commission on substance addiction, according to Rella. “You have to acquire knowledge in order to solve the problem, so there is traditional teaching going on,” he said. “But right from the beginning, it’s the problem that drives the learning rather than, ‘I learn to take an assessment at some future date.’” Rella credited District Administrator for Curriculum and Instruction Jennifer Polychronakos as the driving force behind professional development and empowering district faculty to embrace the district’s new approach. “We’ve so far created about 20 units of study districtwide that are ready to go for next year and we’ve piloted some of them and worked out some of the kinks,” Polychronakos said. “We’re going to continue to really just take the standards that we have from the state and make them into more of a project-based, or problem-based, learning type of experience for the kids.”

Comsewogue community holding benefit for late resident’s family BY ANTHONY PETRIELLO Comsewogue High School will be rockin’ for a good cause tonight, July 19, with John Elefante, former lead singer of the American classic rock group Kansas. A concert — called A Night of Healing and Hope — is being presented by the Warriors of Faith Christian Club, a group of Comsewogue students who organized the event to benefit the family of Brian McGuire, a district resident, former NYPD detective and 9/11 first responder who died suddenly April 30, leaving behind three children and his wife Karin, according to a GoFundMe page set up on behalf of the family. The event is meant to raise money for the family and for attendees to gather for prayer and discussion, according to a flyer promoting the concert. Joining Elefante will be Kevin Chalfant, former lead singer for the Alan Parsons Live Project and former member of the worldrenowned 1980s rock group Journey.

Chalfant said he is eager to perform and was dedicated once he was informed about the circumstances surrounding the benefit. “When John Elefante asked me to join him on Long Island for this wonderful family get-together I was very happy,” Chalfant said. “I never knew the officer but when I heard that he was a first responder on 9/11, that’s all it took for me to be committed to this wonderful event.” The money donated through ticket sales and a silent auction will go toward paying for college educations for the McGuire’s three kids. Their oldest son, Thomas, graduated from Comsewogue June 21, and will be attending Suffolk County Community College in the fall. Their son Michael will be entering 11th grade this upcoming school year, and their daughter, Danielle, will be heading to eighth grade. Local businesses including Chick-fil-A, School of Rock and Wahlburgers, among others, as well as clergy from Axis Church of Medford, The Harbor Church of Patchogue,

Smithtown Gospel Tabernacle, and the Christian Cultural Center in Smithtown are working together to promote and organize the event along with the Comsewogue students. All of the funds raised will be directed to the McGuire family. Pastor Anthony Pelella of Axis Church is one of those coordinating the event, and said he wanted to be involved just to help a family in need. “We just wanted to give them something to make them smile,” he said. Pelella will be delivering a message of hope prior to the concert. He said he believes in the notion that the Port Jefferson community is an extremely interconnected and faith-driven place to reside. “I believe that the Port Jefferson community hurts together,” he said. “When one person hurts we all hurt together, and when one person smiles we all smile together.” Comsewogue school board president, John Swenning, said he is looking forward to the event and raising funds for the

cause. While Swenning is not the main coordinator of the concert, he said he is putting his full effort behind it and working to maximize the aid the concert generates for the McGuire family. “It is humbling to see a community come together to help a neighbor in their time of need,” Swenning said. “There is no place I would want to raise a family other than the Comsewogue community.” The silent auction will consist of gift baskets and guitars autographed by Elefante and Chalfant. Assigned seat tickets can be purchased at comsewoguehs.seatyourself.biz. Special tickets are also for sale for a meet and greet and dinner with the band, with food provided by Wahlburgers. Driving on drugs

Near the intersection or Routes 112 and 347 in Port Jefferson Station July 12 at about 12:30 p.m., a 29-year-old woman from Patchogue was allegedly seated in the driver’s seat of a running 2017 Hyundai with the car in drive and her foot on the brake, according to police. Police discovered she was operating the vehicle under the influence of a drug. She was arrested and charged with first-degree operation of a motor vehicle while impaired by drugs.

Burglary streak

At Iglesia Fuente de Jacob Church on Bicycle Path in Port Jefferson Station between July 1 and July 3, a 58-year-old undomiciled man allegedly entered and left with property belonging to the church in his possession, according to police. He was arrested July 9 in Port Jefferson Station. It was discovered he allegedly committed a similar offense at the same location between June 24-26, according to police. He was also charged for allegedly taking property from a medical office on Route 112 in Port Jefferson Station, and for allegedly taking property from The Meadow Club on Route 112 July 6, according to police. He was charged with four counts of third-degree burglary in total.

At Bahía Bar & Discotec on Main Street in Port Jefferson July 15 at about 4 a.m., two groups of people were involved in a dispute inside the establishment, which then made its way onto the street, according to police. During the incident two people were allegedly stabbed — one was treated for non-life-threatening injuries, while the other was treated for more serious injuries, that police also categorized as “nonlife threatening.” No arrests have been made in connection with the incident.

A kayak was stolen from a home on Main Street in Setauket July 14 at about 10 p.m., according to police.

A bottle of liquor was stolen from MarKay’s Wines & Spirits on Nesconset Highway in Port Jefferson Station July 14 at about 2 p.m., according to police.

Car damaged

At the Brookhaven Town marina parking lot on Harbor Beach Road in Mount Sinai July 14 at about 10 p.m., a dispute took place between two people, with one causing physical damage to the other’s car by punching and kicking it, according to police.

A 38-year-old man from Shirley allegedly screamed profane language while on North Country Road in Port Jefferson July 13 at about midnight, according to police. While being questioned and issued a summons for disorderly conduct, the man allegedly verbally threatened a police officer, and while being placed under arrest, tried to prevent himself from being put in handcuffs, police said. He was charged with second-degree aggravated harassment and resisting arrest, in addition to the disorderly conduct summons.

Jeans were stolen from Kohl’s on Nesconset Highway in East Setauket July 13 at about 2:30 p.m. About four hours later, several shirts were stolen from the same store, police said.

At about 3 a.m. June 1, a 19-year-old man from Farmingville allegedly punched someone in the face multiple times while on East Main Street in Port Jefferson, according to police. He was arrested July 10 and charged with assault. The victim was taken to the hospital for treatment of injuries, police said.

Cash and credit cards were stolen from within a 2017 Nissan parked on Oakland Avenue in Miller Place July 12 at about 10 p.m., according to police.

A 54-year-old man from Port Jefferson allegedly stole Craftsman pliers from Ace Hardware on Route 112 in Port Jefferson Station July 15 at about noon, according to police. He was arrested and charged with petit larceny. Upon his arrest, he was also charged with a second count of petit larceny for allegedly stealing a barbecue grill from the same store July 8 at about 3:30 p.m., police said.

A 62-year-old woman from Miller Place allegedly possessed prescription medication without a valid prescription in a public place while on Route 112 in Port Jefferson Station July 14 at about 11 p.m., according to police. TOWN Brookhaven seeking funds to repair Mount Sinai Harbor jetties Jetties cited as contributor to PJV beach erosion BY KYLE BARR KYLE@TBRNEWSMEDIA.COM Officials believe one of the few things that stands in the way of further erosion of Port Jefferson Village’s East Beach, which sits on the Long Island Sound at the end of Village Beach Road, are jetties, or rock pilings meant to protect the shoreline at the mouth of Mount Sinai Harbor, just east of the Port Jeff beach. With the two town-owned structures in need of restoration, Brookhaven is looking for some additional funding. The Brookhaven Town board voted unanimously at a July 12 meeting to submit grant applications to the New York State Green Innovation Grant Program and state Local Waterfront Revitalization Program for additional money to work on the jetty reconstruction project. The $8.6 million jetty project has been in the works for several years, but only truly got underway in 2016. The town is seeking reimbursement of about $1.3 million through the grants. The resulting $7.3 million net cost would be financed through an existing $3 million Dormitory Authority of the State of New York grant, originally provided through state Sen. Ken LaValle (R-Port Jefferson), and $4.3 million from a previous town bond resolution. Councilwoman Jane Bonner (C-Rocky Point) said the old east and west jetties have holes from rocks collapsing, which allows sand to stream through. Age has not been kind to either structure, and the seaward sides of both jetties remain submerged at high tide. Hurricanes Irene and Sandy caused further damage to the jetties over subsequent years. With the money the town already has along with these new grant bids, Bonner said she is optimistic reconstruction of the jetties will start some time in 2019. “Those holes create a current at high tide that allows sand to get through,” Bonner said. “We are completely committed to taking all the necessary steps to make sure this gets done right.” Brookhaven is the only Long Island municipality in charge of jetties, as the Army Corps of Engineers maintains all others, according to Bonner. Brookhaven has hired Melville-based Nelson & Pope Engineers & Surveyors at a cost of $151,800 for help in the Mount Sinai Harbor dredging project. The dredging will widen the inlet and relieve the pressure of the water hitting the jetties at high tide, according to Bonner. Widening the inlet will help flush out Mount Sinai Harbor, which would lead to cleaner water for both fish living in the harbor and the town’s shellfish at its mariculture facility. The failing jetties have had an impact on the shoreline of Port Jeff Village. The bottom 15 feet of the bluff along East Beach had fallen 260 feet west of the rock revetment, according to a 2016 letter to the village from Stony Brookbased GEI Consultants, a privately owned consulting firm contracted by the village, regarding its concerns about erosion. GEI also stated that repairs to the jetties should be the first step in alleviating erosion issues. Bonner said some of the preliminary work already done has helped relieve the flow of water coming into the inlet and through the jetties, but until the real reconstruction starts the erosion of the local beach remains a problem. Suffolk County Legislator Sarah Anker (D-Mount Sinai) said Mount Sinai Harbor contributes millions of dollars to community through tourism. “It’s a very special harbor,” Anker said. “Repairing the channel should be a primary concern.”

Suffolk lawmakers need to get their priorities in order Whew, that was close. We feared that a good ole game of Suffolk County partisan tug-of-war almost left us high and dry again. Suffolk County legislators voted down 14 bond-seeking bills for various projects that have impact on the day-to-day life of residents June 5 and 19 on a party-line basis. The reasoning given was the 14 items were lumped together in three resolutions, which Republicans argued didn’t allow them to individually vote against projects that they didn’t agree with or may regret funding later. For nearly a month, both Democrats led by Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone (D) and Republicans headed by Minority Leader and Legislator Tom Cilmi (R-Bay Shore) publicly bickered back and forth on how to approach county bonds. Each group held press conferences and made inflammatory statements as time kept ticking in the race against the clock to get federally matching funds for both the Wading River-to-Mount Sinai Rails to Trails project and repaving of Commack Road, among others. It’s said all’s well that ends well, right? Luckily for North Shore residents, both the Rails to Trails and Commack Road bills received the bipartisan support — a supermajority 12 out of 18 votes — necessary to move forward at the July 17 legislative meeting. Most of the 14 bills were voted on individually this time around, the majority of which were approved. Unfortunately, a few projects failed or were not voted on. Cries for funding repairs and upgrades to Suffolk County Police Department’s K-9 Unit facility in Yaphank failed despite the roof leaking, the floor having holes and the air conditioner and heating not working properly, according to Bellone. Republicans argued the planning should be done in-house rather than borrowing to pay for the project. We couldn’t help but notice that a bill to fund $4.68 million for upgrades for the Suffolk County Police Department and county Medical Examiner’s office also failed. Another bill, one that would have given the Republican Suffolk County Board of Elections Commissioner Nick LaLota another term, as his time in office ends Dec. 31, also failed. The outcome of these votes seems to indicate that political partisanship is still afoot, alive and well, as all Long Islanders are aware that politics, too, affects our law enforcement offices. A word of warning to our Suffolk County elected officials: While President Donald Trump (R) and our U.S. Congress play on sharp political divides to gain power and momentum, that’s not an acceptable way to act here. We beg, don’t take your political cues from Washington, D.C. We — your residents, constituents and voters — expect you to rise above party politics and do what’s best for Suffolk. You must reach out across the aisle, discuss charged issues calmly and reach a compromise that best benefits all. It’s in the job description.

Failures in reporting An absolute obligation to readers, and to your profession, is to disclose whether you are reporting the news or expressing opinion. When you conflate the two, as is apparent in the June 28 article published in The Port Times Record and written by Alex Petroski, “Religious leaders from array of faiths denounce family separations,” you become part of the problem. News reporting is fact finding and should maintain an adherence to allowing readers to discern their personal position from those facts. Editorial opinion has an altogether different agenda, one where you present facts, often selective, so as to convince the reader that your opinion is the one to be adopted. Your article reports a meeting of clerics contending, at the North Shore Jewish Center, that United States laws relating to illegal aliens are crafted in a void “without considerations as to human dignity and worth, to all people involved.” Your article failed to report on

that single contention, “all people involved.” Where religious leaders are correctly concerned with spiritual codes of behavior for their adherents, the codified social laws are singular in their intent to preserve the social order for “all people involved.” Inherent too in that social order are all of the social mores that very much daily address the ideal concerns of our humanity. It is farce, and opinion, to incite social discord under the premise that our immigration laws are without “human consideration.” The appropriate term here is “anamorphic,” defined as denoting or relating to a distorted projection or drawing that appears normal when viewed from a particular point or with a suitable mirror or lens. Your charge in reporting news is to give all a 360 degree view lest you be part of a distorted view for having failed to do so. There are currently 37 million legal immigrants in our country, one million legal immigrants per

year since 2000. It is guessed minimally there are an additional 15 million illegal aliens. In 2017 alone 40,810 unaccompanied alien children were referred to the Office of Refugee Resettlement, part of the Department of Health and Human Services. The average length of stay was 41 days. The immediate “hue and cry” is about the 2,000 children that were used, abused is more correct, by those who sought to cross into the United States at illegal entry points. Endangering the welfare of these minors is in itself criminal. Give us a 360 degree view of the entire situation, be reminded of our “social contract” with “all involved.” The arc of the pendulum of laws and governments of the world is occupied to a very small degree by a society such as our United States, truly, a beacon of light to all.

Cuomo’s hate for Trump is hypocrisy New York State Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D) is facing a serious challenge from the left from Cynthia Nixon in this year’s Democratic primary. The party bosses are concerned enough that they have called in big national figures to endorse Cuomo, including getting the DNC chairman, Tom Perez, to break his pledge to stay out of primary races. At the local level, here on Long Island, battle lines are being drawn, with numerous progressive, grassroots groups endorsing Nixon and the party apparatus backing Cuomo. In backing Cuomo, the party bosses have engaged in clear hypocrisy, ignoring many of the arguments that they used to support Hillary Clinton (D) in 2016 and to resist now President Donald Trump (R). Throughout the 2015-16 primary and general election, voters were repeatedly told that it was time for Clinton because it was time for a female president. Those who failed to support her, despite very real and serious policy objections, were often accused of sexism. Madeleine Albright, former U.S. secretary of state for President Bill Clinton, famously quipped at one of Clinton’s rallies that, “There is a special place in hell for women who do not support other women.” Yet now, when we have a major female contender for the

governor’s office with a progressive record, the party makes no such claims about the possibility of New York’s first female governor. Nixon and her supporters have been maligned, and one prominent Cuomo supporter from New York City even went so far as calling Nixon an “unqualified lesbian.” No doubt, Albright will be here any minute to defend Nixon. Of course, that won’t happen. History has shown that claims of sexism are only allowed to be used to fend off progressive challengers to the party’s picks and never the other way around. America is clearly long overdo for a female president. But isn’t New York also long overdo for a female governor? Another example of hypocrisy comes from the refusal to recognize that several of the key characteristics that Democrats hate about Trump are clearly present in Cuomo. He is known for a bullying mentality, most recently displayed in his angry backlash to the Working Families Party choosing to endorse Nixon over him. Like Trump, Cuomo’s entire career is based on the fact that his father was very successful, opening all sorts of doors for him. Does anyone seriously think that Andrew Cuomo would be governor if his last name wasn’t Cuomo? The most troubling similarity is

the way in which they flaunt their corruption. While Democrats are outraged by Trump’s decision to fire FBI director James Comey and potentially obstruct justice in several ways, few have been willing to call out Cuomo’s disgraceful decision to disband the Committee for Public Corruption, which he had created. New York is known as one of the most corrupt state governments in the nation; but when the commission began to investigate his actions, Cuomo simply ended the commission. This is truly outrageous behavior that should have every Democrat up in arms. Instead, the party has continued to support him fully. There are some huge differences between Trump and Cuomo, and one can obviously support Cuomo while despising Trump based on those differences. But those who attack Trump for the specific failings listed above while absolutely ignoring those same failings in Cuomo are engaging in rank, partisan hypocrisy. This is the kind of behavior that has led so many Americans to reject the political parties, distrust our institutions and argue that all politicians are crooks. We must do better.

Finding turtles, tattoos and tailgaters in the Tar Heel State

hey aren’t unicorns, tooth fairies or fantastic creatures from the C.S. Lewis “Narnia” series. And yet, for a Long Islander who spent considerable time standing knee deep in the waters around West Meadow Beach, listening to the aggressive screech of territorial red-winged blackbirds, the sight of a green ruby-throated hummingbird moving forward and backward in North Carolina brought its own kind of magic. By the time I got out my cellphone and clicked open the camera app, the bird had By Daniel Dunaief disappeared. While there are hummingbirds that periodically appear on Long Island, the sight of one in Charlotte so soon after our move here seemed like a charming

welcome from the nonhuman quarters of Southeastern life. Behind a Chili’s and Qdoba — yes, they are side by side in a strip mall here — we discovered a spectacular lake with a small walking path over the water near the shore. Looking down, we saw numerous fish hovering below and, to our delight, a collection of turtles, who all clearly have an appetite for the leftovers from the nearby restaurant. We have also seen, and felt, considerably more bugs and mosquitoes, while we’ve heard cicadas, which, unlike the 17-year kind on Long Island, emerge here every year. So, what about the two-legged creatures? After the initial shock from the level of consideration other drivers displayed, it’s become clear that: (a) The Northeast hasn’t cornered the market on aggressive and anxious drivers. (b) You can take the New Yorker out of New York, but you can’t take New York out of the New Yorker.

Until I get North Carolina license plates, I have been driving the speed limit on smaller, local roads. Other cars have tailgated me so closely that I can practically read their lips as they talk on the phone or sing songs. I watched a woman in a Mustang convertible, with rap music shouting profanities, weave in and out of traffic as her long hair waved in the breeze behind her. From a distance, the music and expletives were one and the same. We have also seen an extensive collection of tattoos. A young FedEx driver climbed out of her truck and rang the bell to deliver a package. Her arms were so covered in colors and designs that it was difficult to discern a theme or pattern. I walked into a supermarket behind a young couple pushing a baby stroller. The father had tattoos along the back of his muscular calves, while body ink adorned the well-defined shoulders and arms of his wife. I wondered if and when their young child might get her first tattoo.

When they find out we’re from the Northeast, people in North Carolina frequently become self-deprecating about their inability to handle cold weather. They laugh that flurries, or even a forecast for snow, shuts down the entire city of Charlotte. They assure us that no matter how much we shoveled elsewhere, we won’t have to lift and dump snow by the side of the road. They ask how we’re handling the heat, which is often in the mid-90s, and the humidity, which is fairly high as well. While the three H’s — hazy, hot and humid — are my least favorite combination, I have certainly experienced many warm summers on Long Island, where shade or a trip into the ocean or a pool provide small comfort in the face of oppressive warmth. With birds and insects of all sizes flying around, and drivers weaving in and out of traffic, North Carolina has displayed an abundance of high-energy activity.

any residents know about the Culper spies that operated along the North Shore of Long Island and gave invaluable intelligence about British troop movements and plans to Gen. George Washington during the Revolutionary War. But perhaps not so many know that two of Washington’s letters to his chief spymaster Major Benjamin Tallmadge, of Setauket, are on display locally and are available for viewing by the public. They are part of the Special Collections & University Archives of Stony Brook University Libraries, and how we got them is itself a By Leah S. Dunaief story, as was told by Kristen Nyitray, SBU’s Special Collections director, at the Three Village Historical Society meeting Monday night. The letters, written by Washington in 1779 and 1780, were part of the

estate of Malcolm Forbes, the publishing magnate, and were put up for auction by Christie’s at two separate times. Forbes was proud of the fact that he had collected artifacts from each American president. Where those letters were for some 200 years before he got them is a deep mystery, but they are here now, thanks to the alacrity of local historyminded leaders, like state Assemblyman Steve Englebright (D-Setauket), members of the historical society and philanthropist Henry Laufer. On May 24, 2006, Frank Turano, then president of the historical society, Nyitray and Englebright took the train to New York City for the auction. Armed with a modest amount of money, given how much historical memorabilia sold for, they hoped to purchase the first letter and return it to the place where history happened. Nyitray was the paddle wielder, indicating a willing purchaser at the auctioneer’s bidding, and the three nervously awaited the sale of Lot 31, the first coveted letter. As parts of the estate sold ahead of the desired letter for much more than the resources of the triumvirate, they became increasingly nervous. Paddles were waving

and telephones ringing with high bids all around them. Finally the letter, in Washington’s elegant hand, written from West Point on Sept. 24, 1779, and arriving in Setauket Sept. 26, was offered and miraculously the phones fell silent and the paddles went down. Only Nyitray’s was visible and, unchallenged, she won the bid. The winning price was $80,000. Add in the commission for the auction house and other incidentals, and the final cost for the precious letter was almost $100,000. They had enough money. The three were ecstatic. They were going to bring that letter back to Setauket where “The Father of our Country” had originally sent it. Within the month, after paperwork was completed, they were able to carry their treasure back to SBU in a brown shopping bag. Once safely ensconced, the letter had to be cleaned and preserved by experts, and framed and mounted for suitable viewing. That proved to be an arduous and lengthy series of tasks. The group returned to Christie’s for the second letter written Sept. 16, 1780, on Feb. 12, 2009, which coincidentally

is the same day as Lincoln’s birthdate. The quality of paper on which the letters were written was good rag paper, but the ink was made from oak gall, which was high in tannic acid, and was corrosive. The ink had to be treated to preserve the letters. The initial viewing for the first letter was in October 2006, and the letters have done some traveling since, having been seen in Southampton and by people in Florida, California and Minnesota. They are accessible to all. The 1779 letter deals with advice on how “Culper Junr.” — who was Robert Townsend — could go about his business as a freelance writer and merchant and also function as a spy. Washington gives specific instructions on how Townsend should write secret information among the leaves of a pamphlet or even between the lines of a newsy letter to a friend with special invisible ink. We know that ink was fabricated by Founding Father John Jay’s elder brother, James, who was a physician, and was referred to by the spies as “medicine.” The letter is signed, “I am Sir Your most obedient and humble servt. Go. Washington.” What a thrill.

Ward Melville ice hockey reflects on state championship season BY DESIRÉE KEEGAN

Mark Devlin was at his son Ryan’s high school graduation ceremony last month and couldn’t believe his ears. As Ward Melville High School’s valedictorian took to the podium, he referenced three state championship teams from the past school year — the field hockey, boys lacrosse and ice hockey teams. “I almost fell out of my chair,” the former five-year president and general manager of the Ward Melville Ice Hockey Club said, laughing. “They’ve never recognized our hockey club at the high school, and there was a huge roar up in the stands, so it was really cool. Our town is known for lacrosse and now the word is getting out about the hockey team.” Although Devlin, who was also the varsity head coach last year, has since stepped down as president of the club, the soon-to-be varsity assistant coach said it has come a long way from when he took over five years ago, creating a board and turning the 30-year-old organization into a 501(c)(3) nonprofit. The varsity team was 1-19 when his son first entered the youth league, and last year, the Patriots became the first team in the Suffolk County High School Ice Hockey League to go undefeated. They also took home the club’s first state championship, which qualified the team for its first national showing. “This year we told a very different story,” recent graduate and co-captain Zachary Boritz said. “We found out after our last game that we were the first team to go undefeated and I was in shock, I couldn’t believe it. And to make it to states and then to nationals was a dream come true.” Ward Melville took the ice in Minnesota right before the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School team from Florida, the district rocked by a tragic mass shooting in February. The Patriots wore stickers on their helmets that said, “MSD Strong,” the parents of the teams greeted one another, and the Stoneman Douglas kids applauded the Patriots as they took center stage. “It was a horrible tragedy and we hoped to show our support from the guys on Long Island,” Boritz said. “Being on that stage was something else. Out of all of the tournaments and showcases I’ve been to throughout my hockey career, nationals was the best game I’ve ever played in. It was a good challenge.” Part of the program’s secret is four years ago Devlin created 10- to 12-year-old and 13- to 15-year-old developmental teams. The club also takes in players from the greater Port Jefferson area and Mount Sinai, hoping to expand in the future to create more teams. “Those teams have taken off,” Devlin said. “Now, I think they’re looking at creating a 7- to 10-year-old team, so from a community aspect we’re getting kids involved in hockey at the lowest levels now.” Current vice president Greg Kryjak said watching the varsity Patriots excel the way they did was jaw-dropping, especially with a 126-21 goal differential. “Most of the time when you watch hockey there are three forwards and two

Ward Melville High School’s varsity ice hockey team celebrates its Suffolk County championship victory against Smithtown-Hauppauge. defensemen, and you can clearly see that on the ice, the difference with this team is there were five players out there regardless of what position they played that could score or defend,” he said. “It really differentiated them from the rest of the teams.” This set the stage for a dynamic playoff atmosphere, where Devlin said people had to be turned away as the rink filled with high school classmates and parents. The team bested St. John the Baptist 5-2 and blanked reigning league champion Smithtown-Hauppauge 5-0 in a decisive game three for the Patriots’ first league title. Ward Melville went 4-1 in the state tournament to secure a place in the final game, which the team won 3-0. “We’re huge with offense — scored a lot of goals this year,” Boritz said. “It wasn’t just the first line — every single line all the way

to the fourth line, everyone was contributing, which was great to see because a few years prior it wasn’t really like that.” Co-captain Brendan Callow was also recognized by Devlin as being a big playmaker out on the ice, especially when some of the other major contributors were out with injuries. “He won games almost single handily, and he’s the most humble, high-character kid you’d ever meet,” the coach said. “If I had to pick one kid, he’s the guy who when we needed a big goal or we needed something going on, he did it. He was also an extension of the coaching staff. Because he’s such a great player and a great guy, the rest of the team looked up to him.” Blanking Smithtown 5-0 was significant for the team, after Ward Melville lost in devastating fashion to the Bulls in the state

finals two years ago with 2.1 seconds left in a decisive game three. “That was one of the most heart wrenching losses we’ve ever had,” said Devlin, who was an assistant at the time. “They’ve been our nemesis. It was thrilling to beat them.” He said he was also feeling so many different emotions at the time of the win because his son was one of 13 seniors on the squad, and because he’d been coaching 10 of the upperclassmen since they were 5 years old. “They’re second and third sons to me — I’ve watched them grow up,” Devlin said. “Their work ethic, their accountability, their love for each other, no one wanted to let the guy next to them down. To watch these seniors go out on top like that, it was a fairy-tale ending. I couldn’t have written a better script.”
