It was such a well-kept secret, it took more than 200 years to come to light. Port Jefferson Village officials unveiled the newest historic addition to the Drowned Meadow Cottage museum last week: a letter that links Port Jefferson’s Roe brothers to then-Gen. George Washington’s Culper Spy Ring, which covertly worked to advance the rebel cause during the Revolutionary War. Loyalist soldier Nehemiah Marks wrote the letter on Dec. 21, 1780, to inform his comrades that Phillips and Nathaniel Roe, among others, helped supply Setauket-based spy Caleb Brewster with information to pass on to the Patriots.

According to Mayor Margot Garant, a former Port Jefferson high school student found the letter two years ago while researching the Revolutionary spy ring at the University of Michigan and contacted the mayor. The next step was getting the letter authenticated. “The authentication for this letter is so critical,” Garant said in an interview before last week’s event at the cottage, the former home of Phillips Roe. Villagers had long had suspicions that he and his brother were important “not only to village history but to the history of the Revolutionary War, and instrumental in the spy ring. That was kicked around as a rumor for many years and never authenticated.” SPIeS continued on page a11

A new student roaming the halls of Comsewogue High School is getting into a New York state of mind. Ponrakit Puorcharoen journeyed to Long Island from Thailand this year to attend school because he “wanted to learn about a new culture.” The 15-year-old foreign exchange student, who goes by the nickname Rio, hails from Nonthaburi, a city near Bangkok and the Gulf of Thailand. Rio said in a phone interview that he did not get to choose where he was going to be placed, and did not know much about New York before arriving stateside. His host family — Lynellen and Rick Nielsen and their sons, Jeremy and Josh — has tried to show him around, taking him to New York City. He saw the Museum of Modern Art and Times Square, which Rio thinks is “crazy, with the amount of people there.” His family in Port Jefferson Station got involved in part because of the host mom’s childhood memories. “When I was a child, my family had a foreign exchange student, and it was a really positive experience,” Lynellen

Nielsen said in a phone interview. “I thought it was something that Jeremy should experience as well.” Jeremy is a senior at Comsewogue High School, two years ahead of Rio, while Josh is enrolled at Hunter College. Lynellen Nielsen described the process of applying for the foreign exchange program as “serendipitous.” She and her family had considered hosting a student many times, but didn’t begin the process until she discovered a friend of hers had begun working for the International Student Exchange Programs. After the family applied, Nielsen said once the organization approved them, they were able to choose from a number of students to host for the year. “We saw [Rio] had similar interests, like animals, cooking, technology and art,” she said. “We thought he would be a great match.” Although Rio arrived in the United States on Aug. 9, he didn’t get to Long Island until Aug. 22 because he went though a training program. “His first question when he walked into our house was, ‘What’s the Wi-Fi password?’ so he’s just like any other RIO continued on page A11 Photo from Lynellen Nielsen

Police are irresistible On Sept. 26 at 2:45 a.m., a 45-year-old man from Miller Place was charged with resisting arrest. Police were interviewing the man about an undisclosed case on Wedgewood Lane in Miller Place when the man began harassing an officer. The man then resisted as police arrested him. Three times the fun Police said a 50-year-old man from Ronkonkoma was arrested on Sept. 26 for unlicensed operation of a vehicle after driving a 1984 Suzuki north on Holbrook Road in Lake Ronkonkoma. Police have revoked his license three times in the past.

Police said the victim put an ad on Craigslist to sell the car and received a response from an unidentified person who was interested in the Honda. When they met to discuss the car, the man got into it and drove off. Shady thief An unidentified person stole two sunglasses from a 2013 Jeep parked on Mount Sinai Avenue in Mount Sinai on Sept. 26. A tasty target Police arrested a 48-year-old woman from Lake Grove on Sept. 25 for petit larceny. The woman stole assorted food and other items from the Target on Pond Path in South Setauket.

What’s in a name? A 29-year-old man from Port Jefferson Station was arrested for false impersonation on Sept. 26 on Campo Avenue in Selden after he gave an officer a name other than his own. Police didn’t say why officers were speaking to the man.

County moves to house homeless veterans Land will transfer to nonprofits to create more affordable rentals By Rohma aBBaS

County lawmakers have taken another step toward putting roofs over homeless veterans’ heads. The Suffolk County Legislature has unanimously approved the transfer of eight tax-defaulted properties to nonprofit agencies that will, in turn, convert them into affordable rental housing for veterans who are homeless or seriously at risk of becoming homeless. The move is a significant component of Legislator Steve Stern’s (D) Housing our Homeless Heroes Act, a multi-pronged legislative package aimed at battling the war against veteran homelessness in Suffolk. Officials have said there are about 750 Long Island veterans who are either homeless or who are expected to be homeless by the end of 2015. In addition, Association for Mental Health and Wellness is proposing to build a new four-bedroom house for three senior disabled veterans and a live-in house manager on two parcels in Mastic; rehabilitate a house in Riverhead for one veteran family; and build a new set of four, single-room occupancies for veterans on a parcel in Medford. “As an agency committed to ensuring empowering people to overcome the impact of health and mental health disabilities, it is our intent to devote these houses to assist male and female veterans who have been affected by service-connected and post-service transition mental health challenges,” Michael Stoltz, chief executive officer of the association, said in a previous statement. Stern is hoping that the first unit to be completed — the Copiague parcel — will be built within a year. “The timing is going to be very varied depending on the particular locations,” he said. West Nile-infected mosquito numbers keep rising By RohmA ABBAS

Thirteen more mosquito samples have tested positive for West Nile virus in Suffolk County, bringing the total this year to 192, according to Dr. James L. Tomarken, the county’s health commissioner. The samples were collected from Sept. 15 through Sept. 17, from the following areas: three from West Babylon, one from North Patchogue, one from Selden, one from Patchogue, one from Port Jefferson Station, one from Setauket, one from South Huntington, one from Bay Shore, one from Islip, one from Holbrook and one from Smithtown. One human has tested positive for West Nile this year. The 55-year-old man from the Town of Islip was admitted to a local hospital in late August upon experiencing symptoms consistent with the virus, according to a Suffolk County Department of Health Services statement on Sept. 11. The virus, first detected in birds and mosquito samples in Suffolk County in 1999 and again each year thereafter, is transmitted to humans by the bite of an infected mosquito. “While there is no cause for alarm,” Tomarken said, “we urge residents to cooperate with us in our efforts to reduce the exposure to the virus, which can be debilitating to humans.” To reduce the mosquito population around homes, residents should try to eliminate stagnant water where mosquitoes breed. Other tips include disposing of tin cans, plastic containers, ceramic pots or similar water-holding containers; removing discarded tires on the property; making sure roof gutters drain properly and cleaning clogged gutters; turning over plastic wading pools and wheelbarrows when not in use; changing the water in birdbaths; cleaning vegetation and debris from the edges of ponds and keeping shrubs and grass trimmed; cleaning and chlorinating swimming pools, outdoor saunas and hot tubs; and draining water from pool covers. Most people infected with West Nile virus will experience mild or no symptoms, but some can develop severe symptoms including high fever, headache, neck stiffness, stupor, disorientation, coma, tremors, convulsions, muscle weakness, vision loss, numbness and paralysis, according to Tomarken. The symptoms may last several weeks, and neurological effects may be permanent. Individuals, especially those 50 years of age or older, or those with compromised immune systems, who are most at risk, are urged to take precautions to avoid being bitten by mosquitoes. There are a number of ways to avoid mosquito bites. The Roe brothers came from modest means, according to Georgette Grier-Key, a historical consultant who authenticated the letter and designed its exhibit at the cottage. Their father, John Roe, was a shoemaker, but Phillips was more successful: He owned a wood business, as well as a ship. He used those resources to help to discreetly pass along information in the Culper Spy Ring. But before the letter, some people doubted the area’s extensive involvement. “There was some … organizations that didn’t really believe Port Jefferson had a claim to being part of the spy ring,” Grier-Key said. “Now we have [a] primary document source that says otherwise from a Loyalist perspective.” The letter also links another North Shore neighborhood to the spy ring: Mount Sinai. Old Man’s Road is among the locations listed in the message, after a Patriot informant named James Smith was spotted receiving information there. During a ribbon-cutting and openhouse ceremony at the museum last week, Grier-Key said it is possible that towns farther east of Port Jefferson and Mount Sinai could have been a part of the ring too. For now, Garant said, the letter officially puts Port Jefferson and hamlets like Mount Sinai “on the map” for their involvement in the ring and

their contribution to the war. That recognition is reaching across Long Island — Michael Goudket, a program instructor from Raynham Hall Museum in Oyster Bay attended the event to show his support for the Drowned Meadow Cottage museum, saying there is a new sense of apprecia-

tion for the Island’s involvement in the Revolutionary War. “People are starting to appreciate that even though Long Island doesn’t make the history books with big battles … we have the most interesting spy stories,” Goudket said. The historic letter is on display at the

museum alongside other documents, like Phillips Roe’s last will and testament and a list of individuals who still owed him money upon his death in 1792. Those who were involved in the letter’s discovery and authentication hope to uncover more information about the spy ring.

pie and banana bread. In terms of school life, Rio said he has not found many differences between school in America and school in Thailand. He said the only real difference is that students don’t get to choose the classes they take back home, and that Americans use the word “soccer” for the same sport he calls “football,” which he finds “a little weird.” “My favorite thing to do so far has just been relaxing with the family,” Rio said. “They are very chill.”

Church in Port Jefferson. Rotarians Bill Curry, Dennis Brennan, Ed DiNunzio and Sharon Brennan worked with Scouts John

DiBlasio, Jake DiBlasio and Gerard Henninger for three hours, soliciting enough goods to stuff a van from the generous supermarket shoppers. The essential items were then delivered to The Open Cupboard food pantry. Port Jefferson Rotary holds stuffa-van events such as this every few months, and the recent activity was one of the most successful ever.

Marie Tortora Marie Tortora, 94, a former Port Jefferson resident, died on Aug. 22. She was born on Jan. 9, 1921, in Brooklyn, the daughter of Thomas and Mae Tortora. Marie was an executive secretary for the Kraft Company. She was a member

of the Catholic Daughters and participated in Leisure Village activities. She is survived by her sister, Jeanne McGowan, and nephew, William (Susan) DePascale, along with other family members and friends. She was preceded in death by her sister and nephew, Elaine and Stephen DePascale. Arrangements were entrusted to Bryant Funeral Home of East Setauket. Services were held at St. Mark’s R.C. Church in Shoreham. Interment followed in Holy Sepulchre Cemetery in Coram. Donations made to the ALS Ride for Life organization would be appreciated. members of Suffolk County government were excited by the new water quality initiatives. “We’re involved in a historic initiative in Suffolk County to address a serious threat to our environment and our economy,” Peter Scully, deputy county executive for water quality, said. “We’re always happy and anxious to work with the private sector on solutions.” This event was held at Nesconset resident Alan Marvin’s home. Officials inspected Marvin’s cesspool and observed how it had changed over time. Marvin said he was lucky to have been chosen because he learned that his septic system is set to overflow by December, and he would have had to call for emergency service. “It’s an important issue,” he said. “I don’t think most homeowners realize when they go to the bathroom what it affects. This is a good way for Suffolk County residents to learn.”

Housing our Homeless Heroes doesn’t stop at just housing. At the same meeting, the Legislature approved Helping Our Veterans lane (HOV lane) legislation, sponsored by Legislator Tom Cilmi (R-East Islip) and Stern. The legislation’s goal is to expedite veteran services within the county’s Department of Social Services. Stern said many times, veterans walk into the county’s DSS for services they may typically need from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, and they are “turned away.” He said it becomes a challenge to get them to come back to a government assistance office. The HOV lane legislation would pair veterans who are seeking services at DSS with a veteran services officer. Their requests would be fast-tracked when they walk into the department — regardless of whether they’re at the right office. “That’s very important here, because veterans, too many of them, face too many challenges and time becomes very important,” Stern said. Stern said he’s proud of the enactment of Housing our Homeless Heroes: “I have every reason to believe that it’s going to serve as model for the rest of the country.”

Although at first the Wildcats had difficult controlling the ball on the lumpy grass field at Port Jefferson, their luck changed with six minutes left in the first. While Shoreham made a shot at the cage, Port Jefferson freshman goalkeeper Catrina Alvarez fell on the ball, giving junior midfielder Melissa Manzello a penalty stroke. Cesspools will catch up with us sewer or later

There’s something in the water — our own excrement. Last week was national SepticSmart Week, an annual U.S. environmental Protection Agency initiative created to teach people how to care for their septic systems. People should know how to maintain these waste systems to prevent their contents from seeping into the ground and into our drinking water aquifer, but it’s a shame that we are still at this point. Suffolk County politicians frequently talk about their lofty goals to build sewer systems throughout our neighborhoods. in addition to better protecting surface and groundwater, sewers enable commercial and residential development, which is what we need to keep Long island a viable community for future generations. But we rarely see progress toward the widespread sewer goal. Part of the problem is the tremendous cost of “sewering up” all of our homes and businesses. however, it’s better to start paying now than when we are in the throes of another recession and desperately need sewers in order to attract business and keep the economy chugging along; or when we wake up one morning to find our water supply irreparably saturated with human waste particles. Although there are admirable government initiatives to reduce nitrogen pollution, sewers are the ultimate solution. Maybe our electeds are hesitant to be the hated ones handing taxpayers a large bill for the projects, but someone’s got to do it. Until our elected officials start taking real action, there are things we can do to help spare our drinking water, such as investing our own money in our septic systems, upgrading them to more environmentally friendly ones and safely cleaning them out more frequently to prevent overflowing. According to Suffolk County executive Steve Bellone’s office, there are 360,000 county lots with septic systems and cesspools that add nitrogen pollution to our communities. if even 10 percent of those lot owners upgraded their septic systems, it could make a world of difference.

To The ediTor: The school year has begun and i have recently been dealing with three very bright teenagers. All three have taken enough advanced placement courses to be accepted, directly from high school, into a college sophomore year. All three are so stressed that they are receiving psychiatric care. one of the three has spoken of suicidal thoughts. This one has also considered the option of taking a fourth SAT test. What are we doing to these kids and why are we doing it? i think i may know. We have guidance counselors, teachers and parents who have absolutely no concept of the real world. We have corporate human resources personnel who are incapable of conducting a meaningful interview so they rely solely on

“paper” records (“he/she graduated from super university, so how was i to know he/she was a dud?”). We have the university admission departments that encourage guidance counselors to send more and more applicants so as to boost their reject percentages and thus make their schools appear more desirable. Then we have the testing organizations whose singular goal appears to be increased testing so as to increase their profit. on top of all of this we have the politicians. in the recent televised republican presidential debate i heard the oft-repeated statement that we should not increase the minimum wage but rather educate our young people so they can get high-paying, high-tech jobs. Success, according to our politicians and educators, is all about getting into the “right” school. Getting into the right school requires proving, through standardized testing, you have the “right” iQ.

i know at least two people who have very similar, very high iQs. Neither was good at memorization. Both in grammar school were considered to be below average. Both have had reasonable success in life. one was Albert einstein and i am the other. in all likelihood, neither of us would have looked very good on the SATs. it is long past time for us to realize we are harming our young people because the “experts” either don’t know what they are doing or are totally focused on personal or corporate gain. Parents, enough is enough. in many cases plumbers, electricians and the like make more money than doctors, teachers and university professors. remember, Bill Gates did not get past his first semester of college. Train your child for a meaningful job and a complete life. But that’s just one man’s opinion. Francis G. Gibbons Sr. Terryville

t’s a collision of colors, sights, sounds and ideas, of comings and goings. I know he wasn’t running for office here in the United States, but the love fest for Pope Francis was incredible. He drew enormous crowds, while discussing climate change and immigrants. This is the time when the mean season meets the postseason. Republicans are gearing up

to fight for us, but before they do, they’re fighting against each other, while they get ready to fight against Hillary Clinton, the presumptive frontrunner on the Democratic side who wants to unify a nation that’s divided over its feelings for her. But wait, we’ve seen this Democratic show before, right? That guy with the eloquent speaking ability and the minimal experience in Illinois didn’t really have a chance to become president eight years ago, until he did and now President Obama is almost getting ready to leave his job. Can’t you just feel the Republicans racing for position behind Donald Trump, wondering when and if there will be an opening that allows them to lead the party? Speaking of comings and goings, Obama and Russian President Vladimir Putin had dueling ideas for what to do about Syria. Ideas and rhetoric collided at the United Nations — a

place Putin hadn’t addressed in 10 years. People are angry. Well, Trump certainly is. Or, wait, is he just playing angry on TV until we can all sort it out and realize that he’s just a patriotic American with a vision for America that will keep us safe, happy, fully employed and healthy? Then, of course, there’s the postseason, where the boys of summer have a chance to become the men of October. The Mets are loaded with young guns, who are ready to drive the Dodgers and their manager Don Mattingly out of the postseason. My beloved Yankees look like a flawed team limping their way into the wild card in desperate need, perhaps, of someone with Yogi Berra’s legendary ability to drive in runs in big situations. And then there’s water on Mars. We’ve been hearing about it for a long time, but NASA is excited that this evidence is for real. They don’t know where it

comes from, exactly, or how it got there, but they’re convinced it’s there and it’s incredibly salty. The announcement left open the possibility that it might contain some form of life. While it’s exciting, it’s also a tad anticlimactic to those hoping for signs of life with hands and a face. The stock market doesn’t know what to make of these times: Are we OK with China? Are we worried about low gas prices? Does the Federal Reserve know something it’s not telling us? Is this a great time to buy or the right time to sell? Watching stocks is like tracking a flock of birds who seem to be heading west in the sky, only to reverse course dramatically and go east before slingshotting back and forth again and again. Next, there’s the surprise resignation by House Speaker John Boehner, and the start of a new era on “The Daily Show” with Trevor Noah. The trees that turn color

People are angry; and the Mets are ready for the Dodgers. first are a sign that school really is open, that fly-by-night Halloween stores will start opening, and that pumpkin pie and mince will soon be available at favorite restaurants. By then, families scattered hither and yon will come together at Thanksgiving to reconnect, laugh and recharge their batteries. By then, the leaves will be off the trees and the Halloween candy will be either eaten or donated. So, let’s not rush ahead, because we’ve got so many modern moments ahead. A return visit to China after 10 years

he last time I was in China was 10 years ago, so when one of my sons told me he had been invited to give a series of talks at different universities there and would welcome my company, I jumped at the chance to see how the country had changed. I had been impressed by the energy and the work ethic of the Chinese people as well as the ambitions of the government, and knew that in a decade there would have to be a

difference. So I invite you in turn to come along with me now, and I will share my impressions as we travel in this beautiful, exotic and ancient land of contrasts. What a difference! We landed in Shanghai at night, and my first sight was of the airport: broad glass sheets, soaring steel beams and ultramodern with its people and luggage movers. No one we met in the bustle of humanity spoke English, but we did manage to find an ATM machine and a sign with the appropriate picture and the word in English directing us to the taxis. Getting to our hotel was another matter. We did not have the name written in Chinese, a flaw that resulted in a two-and-a-half hour cab ride before we found ourselves ready to fall into our beds. As cynical New Yorkers, we suspected the worst of the cabbie but we couldn’t be sure and, to our delight, the bellman at the entrance to our hotel forced the driver to take two-thirds of the amount on the meter when he learned we had come from the airport. It set

the tone for the rest of our trip, for we found the Chinese people to be honorable throughout all our subsequent money transactions with them, although they expect to bargain. In any event, the lesson here is to get the name of every destination in Chinese for the driver, and especially to carry the name of one’s hotel in Chinese for the return trip. And cab fares, by the way, are quite reasonable. The number of skyscrapers in Shanghai has indeed multiplied, and the architecture is imaginative and impressive. But at the same time that we marveled at the skyline the next morning, we noted the thick gray fog that covered the sky. This was the pollution we had been warned of, and it was to accompany us during all but a couple of days throughout our trip. Few people wore masks, we noted, as we ventured out, and I was immediately dazzled by the colors of the clothing worn by the pedestrians as they hurried along the streets. When I was last there, most people wore blue jackets, gray pants and sturdy shoes. Now

the women in particular were dressed in bright shades of every color, matched with fashionable sandals, and they looked quite elegant and attractive. They also looked thin, the men as well. It wasn’t until we traveled well north that we saw a taller and sometimes stockier population. The city was clean and free of litter, the result of cadres of people with large brooms whom we saw sweeping the walkways as we rode the red double-decker tour buses. I remembered the human cleaners from my last visit, but this time they were reinforced with mechanized sweepers that rode along the sidewalks and in the streets. Where before there had been many bicycles and fewer cars, now there were traffic jams of legendary proportions and few bicycles. And after a couple of days, we realized that we never saw anyone in a wheelchair or on crutches and, unless the buildings were quite recent, there were no aids like elevators or depressed curbs for the disabled. We did see a few people in wheelchairs

where there were westerners, like in Beijing. In a few of the cities we visited, Chinese tourists from perhaps more rural locations, stared at us or came up and asked to take pictures with us. This was all transacted with pantomime, of course. They seem especially to like red, the national color, and the day I wore a crimson blouse I was a popular iPhone target. Many of the children we saw were in the care of their grandparents since both parents tend to work. And although the single child — the result of the one-child policy — was often a boy, I was happy to see a lot of young girls. This, too, was a noticeable change from my last visit. The surest way to break the ice on the street or in a museum or park, we found, was to interact with the children. We were rewarded by the adults with broad smiles. Part II will be next week.
