When Rabbi Aaron Benson of the North Shore Jewish Center in Port Jefferson Station learned of the passing of a North Shore resident in Afghanistan, he knew he wanted to help, he just wasn’t sure how at the time. “Some events bring the news home to you in a personal and direct way,” Benson said. “This one struck me personally.” Benson recalled learning of the death of Staff Sgt. Louis Bonacasa while attending Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone’s (D) inauguration Dec. 30. Bonacasa was a local hero from Coram who left behind a widow and 5-year-old daughter when he was killed by a suicide bomber four days before Christmas last year. Benson wanted to do something to help the family. He called upon congregant Doris Weisman, chairperson of military support services at the synagogue, to form a plan of action. Weisman, is a member of a military family and became widowed young. “Having had so much military around me all my life, it was natural for me to reach out to Deb,” she said of contacting Bonacasa’s wife Deborah. “I will do everything I can to help her and [their daughter] Lilianna find their way, which they are doing. They have a lot of good support.” A fundraising effort began thanks to the efforts of Benson and Weisman. At a ceremony held Aug. 19 at the Jewish Center, Benson welcomed Bonacasa family members, and led a prayer for Louis Bonacasa, lit a memorial candle for him and presented a check to his widow. Benson gave Lilianna a hamsa, which is a palm-shaped amulet popular in the Middle East and North Africa. “[It] is meant to represent the hand of God as a source of protection and blessings as a reminder of our love for your family and respect for your father, whom we all admire very much,” he said to the child. Members of the congregation had little trouble getting behind such a worthy cause. “I have never been so proud of our North Shore Jewish Center congregation for reaching

out to someone in the community who needs our support,” congregant Beverly Kasper said. She also brought a gift bag for Lilianna. Benson echoed that sentiment in a telephone interview. He recalled his Jewish New Year sermon last fall in which he challenged members of the congregation to go above and beyond at tikkun olam, a Hebrew phrase that refers to performing acts of kindness in an effort to perfect or repair the world. He asked people to make an effort on the 18th of each month to do something positive beyond what they’d normally do. The 18th was symbolic because in Hebrew, 18 spells “chai,” which means “life.” He named this effort Team Malachim, the Hebrew word for angels, with the intent to encourage people to reach out to someone they didn’t know, someone who might not be looking for help but could use some. Helping the Bonacasa family clearly fit his outreach plan to go beyond the synagogue and into the greater Long Island community, and he was proud of the response he got. “It’s a way to show concern, to bring something good to the lives of others, to increase the love in the world,” he said of the fundraising effort and the desire to help. Other North Shore communities also reached out to the Bonacasas. The Sound Beach community welcomed the family into their new neighborhood in June, after Rocky Point VFW Fischer/Hewins Post 6249 Commander Joe Cognitore and Landmark Properties owner Mark Baisch helped build a home for the family, which came with a reduced, more affordable mortgage. There was a local outpour from neighboring hamlets, which came bearing welcome home gifts for the Bonacasas, such as gift cards, toys and a new bike for Lilianna, when they received keys to the home. North Shore Jewish Center president Andy Polan agreed that Jewish values need to extend beyond the walls of synagogues and homes. “It’s very important for all [religious] denominations to encourage members to do things for our country as a whole,” he said. “We learn tolerance, to embrace others and to be sensitive to other people’s tragedies. It really shows what the United States is all about.”

Stony Brook, Mount Sinai team up to expand science centers BY TALIA AMOROSANO Two major medical institutions have agreed to team up, and the partnership could lead to big scientific breakthroughs. In order to create more academic research opportunities and streamline and expand clinical care initiatives, Stony Brook Medicine and Mount Sinai Health System have entered into a comprehensive affiliation agreement. The change will promote interinstitution collaboration encompassing all five of Stony Brook’s Health Science schools, Stony Brook University Hospital, all 25 academic departments of the Stony Brook University School of Medicine, Mount Sinai Health System facilities and Medical School, and the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, inclusive of seven hospitals and an expanding ambulatory network. Facilitators of the partnership believe that the expansion of clinical trials and research opportunities for both institutions will prompt research that could lead to major discoveries, like in treatment and understanding of disease. Dr. Kenneth Kaushansky, senior vice president for Health Sciences at Stony Brook University, said the alliance will make use of the strengths of each individual institution. In a press release, he noted Mount Sinai’s Icahn School of Medicine for its strong biomedical, clinical research and health policy expertise and Stony Brook University for its advanced mathematics, high-performance computing, and physical and chemical science departments to illustrate the point that these institutions can accomplish more to-

gether than each can do alone. “In the long term, we’re going to roll out more and more in the way of clinical interactions,” said Kaushansky, who mentioned Stony Brook’s recent recruitment of two new cardiac surgeons from Mount Sinai. “We don’t do heart transplants, but Mount Sinai does.” He emphasized the new potential for patients to seek services from either hospital. In fact, joint research programs on biomedical engineering, medicinal chemistry science, neurology and more are currently in the works. In terms of education, university students will now be afforded the unique opportunity to take classes offered on either or both campuses, and participate in a variety of summer programs. The two schools plan to facilitate joint graduate and medical educational programs in a wider range of subjects, and have agreed to invest a collaborative $500,000 for the development of challenging pilot programs. “The joint pilots in research have immense promise to advance health at the most exciting time in the biomedical sciences, including advanced computational, bioinformatic and engineering approaches,” said Lina Obeid, M.D., dean for research and vice dean for scientific affairs at Stony Brook University School of Medicine. “Stony Brook Medicine and the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai are two powerhouses of research that when partnered will definitely yield more than just the sum of their parts.” Other institution leaders expressed similar enthusiasm about the affiliation, which was effective upon signing, and many have verbalized

Davis, president and chief executive officer of the Mount Sinai Health System, said that together, Mount Sinai and Stony Brook can create changes in medicine. Stony Brook University President Samuel L. Stanley Jr. agreed. “Each institution has so much to offer,” he said. “This is an opportunity that will prove to be beneficial to all — now and in the future — as we explore and grow.” Looking ahead, Kaushansky said that Stony Brook has more affiliation agreements in the works, contingent upon state approval.

“We are working very hard with our friends in the state of New York to get approval for affiliation with Southampton Hospital and Eastern Long Island Hospital in Greenport,” he said. Also pending is a potential partnership with John T. Mather Memorial Hospital in Port Jefferson. “In April, Mather Hospital asked a number of health care systems — us included — whether they were interested in affiliating, and we said yes,” Kaushansky said. “We made a proposal to the Mather hospital board.” He said Mather was supposed to decide in June, and said Mount Sinai is still waiting.

Selden man arrested for DWI and fleeing from a fatal crash Suffolk County Police have arrested 19-year-old Danny Bonilla Zavala, for driving while intoxicated and leaving the scene after a man was killed in a Port Jefferson Station motor vehicle crash on Aug. 21. Bob Hidalgo was driving a 2011 Toyota Corolla southbound on Route 112 near Sagamore Hills Drive when his vehicle was struck by a 1995 Nissan Maxima traveling southbound on Route 112 at 5:10 p.m. Bonilla Zavala, the driver of the Maxima, of Selden, fled on foot and was apprehended a short time later by Sixth Precinct Police Officer Matthew Cameron. Hidalgo, 31, of Coram, was pronounced dead at the scene by a physician’s assistant from the Office of the Suffolk County Medical Examiner. His wife, Taisha Hidalgo, 30, was transported to Stony Brook University Hospital for non-life-threatening injuries. Bonilla Zavala was transported to John T. Mather Memorial Hospital in Port Jefferson for treatment of minor injuries he sustained in the crash. Major Case Unit detectives charged Bonilla Zavala with driving while intoxicated and leaving the scene of an accident resulting in injury or death. The suspect also had additional charges pending, as he originally misidentified himself to police. Bonilla Zavala was held at the Sixth Precinct.

In an alley near Main Street in Port Jefferson at about 4 a.m. Aug. 21, police were arresting a suspect when he fled on foot. The officer said he chased the suspect but was impeded by a 24-year-old woman from Selden. She was arrested and charged with second-degree obstruction of government administration.

At about 7:30 p.m. May 3, a 57-year-old man from Kings Park and a 54-year-old woman from Melville distracted the owner of Bottle Blow Out Wine & Liquor in East Setauket, then stole three bottles of Johnnie Walker Scotch Whiskey, police said. They were arrested on Aug. 20 in Selden and charged with petit larceny.

A magician never reveals their crimes

A 35-year-old man from Selden stole assorted magic cards from Toys ‘R’ Us in Lake Grove July 10 and again July 18, police said. He was arrested Aug. 18 in Selden and charged with two counts of petit larceny.

Not fast enough

On Nicolls Road in Stony Brook at about 1 p.m. Aug. 21, a 36-year-old man from Brentwood was driving a 2006 Suzuki motorcycle at speeds over 100 mph in a 55 mph zone, according to police. He did not stop when police tried to pull him over initially. He was arrested when he finally stopped, and charged with third-degree fleeing a police officer in a motor vehicle, as well as second and third-degree aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle.

At about 7 p.m. Aug. 20, an 18-year-old man from Coram and a 21-year-old man from Queens stole five watches out of their packaging from Walmart in Setauket,

police said. The 21-year-old possessed heroin and the 18-year-old had marijuana at the time of their arrests. They were each charged with petit larceny. The 21-yearold was also charged with seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance. The 18-year-old was charged with unlawful possession of marijuana.

A 45-year-old man from Central Islip stole a New York Yankees jersey from Kohl’s on Montauk Highway in Shirley at about noon Aug. 21, then a Yankees shirt and a men’s fragrance from Kohl’s on Route 25A in Rocky Point at about 6:30 p.m. the same day, police said. He was arrested in Rocky Point and charged with two counts of petit larceny.

In an Instagram post, the chamber said he was a “dedicated leader in various roles.” Martella was driving a 2014 Honda with his fiancée Shelbi Thurau, 29, another Northport resident, when they were hit by a gray Subaru Outback while traveling west on the LIE toward Exit 68 at about 9:30 a.m. on Sunday, Aug. 21. Carmelo Pinales, the driver of the Subaru, lost control of the vehicle, which crossed over the grassy median, went airborne and struck two vehicles, according to police. He was driving with Winnifer Garcia, 21, of Hempstead, his sister Patricia Pinales, his 10-year-old son Christopher Pinales and his sister’s 3-year-old daughter. Aside from Martella’s car, Pinales also hit a BMW. Inside, were driver Marvin Tenzer, 73, and his three passengers, Sandra Tenzer, 69; Helen Adelson, 69; and Isidore Adelson, 81. Pinales was pronounced dead at the

scene, along with his sister and Martella. Thurau, Garcia and the Tenzers were transported to local hospitals and treated for non-life-threatening injuries. Christopher was pronounced dead at Stony Brook University Hospital after succumbing to his injuries later that day, police said, as well as Adelson. His wife Helen Adelson was pronounced dead on Monday at Stony Brook University Hospital.

This event supported Bethel Hobbs Farm, a local volunteer community farm that provides fresh produce to those in need. Over 200 participants ran the 4-mile course, which consisted of both flat and hilly terrain surrounding the Centereach farm. The run was followed by an award ceremony, musical entertainment and raffle drawings on the farm grounds.

Bonacasa Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone (D), Suffolk County Legislator Sarah Anker (D-Mount Sinai), Colonel Joe Rizzo of the 105th Air Rescue Wing and community leaders joined the family of Staff Sgt. Louis Bonacasa to rename a portion of County Road 21 after Staff Sgt. Louis Bonacasa. A portion of County Road 21, near the Temple Ministries Church in Middle Island, was renamed Staff Sergeant Louis M. Bonacasa Blvd. in honor of the fallen hero. Sgt. Bonacasa, who resided in Coram, attended Newfield High School in Selden and was a member of the Class of 2002. He was killed in action last December

during his fourth tour in Afghanistan in a terrorist suicide bombing. He was awarded the Purple Heart and the Bronze Star Medal with Valor for his heroism — placing himself in harm’s way to protect others. In honor of Overdose Awareness Day and National Recovery Month, Lights of Hope is returning to Port Jefferson Village on Aug. 31 at the memorial park on the harbor. Dan’s Foundation For Recovery, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit based in Stony Brook that is dedicated to helping substance abuse addicts find a new direction, and Magnolia New Beginnings, a Massachusetts-based organization that advocates for those affected by addiction, are inviting those near and far

to a candle lighting. The event, which will begin at 7 p.m., marks a day to remember those lost to drug overdose, and support those who are struggling or are still in recovery. Guest speakers will be present, as well as live acoustic music during the lighting of lumières. All proceeds generated from a raffle will help someone who is struggling to get into and pay for rehab. Brookhaven Town Highway Superintendent Dan Losquadro (R) joined with Councilman Kevin LaValle (R-Selden) to announce the completion of $1.4 million, 23road paving project near Centereach High School and Dawnwood Middle School. A powerful partnership Two major power players in the field of medical help and research have come together to form a new partnership. Stony Brook University School of Medicine and Mount Sinai Health System, of New York City, have joined together to create more academic research opportunities to streamline and expand clinical care initiatives. While they are not the first school of medicine to connect with a health system on Long Island — Hofstra University’s School of Medicine works with Northwell Health — this certainly means new breakthroughs are on the horizon in Suffolk County. Dr. Kenneth Kaushansky, senior vice president for Health Sciences at Stony Brook University said that each institution will be bringing its biggest strengths to the table, thus making each other stronger. Mount Sinai’s Icahn School of Medicine has strong biomedical, clinical research and health policy expertise, while Stony Brook University boasts programs with advanced mathematics, high-performance computing, and physical and chemical science departments. Combining math and science programs together will help students become well rounded, and open up the possibility for new programs. A press release said Stony Brook students will also be able to gain experience in areas of medicine that the university doesn’t currently offer, like observing and learning from heart transplants and other pilot programs. And students from either institution are now welcome to take classes at the other. But this liaison is going beyond students. Kaushansky said this partnership will improve patient care at both Stony Brook University Hospital and Mount Sinai Hospital by allowing patients to easily seek services from either hospital. This is a great endeavor that should be encouraged and supported by the community. Not only does this teaming help students get a more in-depth education and give professors more opportunities for expanded lessons, it will in turn help the residents of the North Shore by improving the care that the local hospital can offer through the new discoveries and breakthroughs the new partnership will make.

We may never know whether Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump meant to incite violence against a duly elected U.S. president with his comment about the “Second Amendment people.” However, his statement during the same rally, where he warned the audience that if Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton were to become president she would appoint liberal Supreme Court justices who would “gut” the Second Amendment and take “your guns away” again, shows that he has no idea how our government works. Hillary Clinton could appoint very liberal justices, and it would have no effect on the Second Amendment, or any amendment for that matter, for two reasons. First, any nominee to the Supreme Court must be approved by the Senate. I guess Mr. Trump must be assuming that the Democrats are going to win the Senate, and therefore approve any nominees Clinton nominates. That works for me. Second — and more importantly — he does not seem to know how the U.S. Constitution

is structured. I guess he still has not read it. Article V of the U. S. Constitution spells out how it can be amended: For an amendment to be proposed or repealed, it requires two-thirds of each of the federal legislative bodies — House and Senate — to vote in the affirmative. Once that has happened, it then requires two-thirds of the state legislatures of the 50 states to vote in the affirmative. Because any amendment can be blocked by a mere 13 states withholding approval, amendments do not come easily. In fact, only 27 amendments have been ratified since the Constitution became effective, and 10 of those occurred

almost immediately — as The Bill of Rights. The difficulty required to change an amendment ought to give us pause, for our Founding Fathers went out of their way to be sure the rights protected by the Constitution could not be easily stripped away. Whether our next president supports or does not support gun control, he or she must make sure that these rules are followed. But then, it does seem that Mr. Trump thinks and behaves as if he is running for emperor, not president. But some of us know better.

The ‘empress’ Clinton has no clothes Like Khizr Kahn, Patricia Smith, the mother of Benghazi victim Sean Smith, spoke at one of the major-party conventions. “I blame Hillary Clinton for the death of my son,” she said. “In an email to her daughter shortly after the attack, Hillary Clinton blamed it on terrorism. But when I saw her at Sean’s coffin ceremony, she looked me squarely in the eye and told me a video was responsible. If Hillary Clinton can’t give us the truth, why should we give her the presidency?” I would encourage you to Google the essay of legendary columnist William Safire in the Jan. 8, 1996 edition of The New York Times in which he describes Clinton as a congenital liar. “She is in the longtime habit of lying; and she has never been called to account for lying herself or in suborning lying in her aides and friends.” Twenty years later, a tired, old leopard has not changed its spots. In November 2015, Clinton said “every survivor of sexual assault deserves to be heard, believed, and supported.” When asked if this included the many women accusing her husband of sexual assault, she smiled and said, “Everybody should be believed until they are disbe-

I am now 73 and it never goes away.” Before voting in November, Google feminist Camille Paglia’s March 2015 interview on YouTube, where she described\s Clinton as “a complete fraud,” and “a woman that has enabled the debredations and exploitation of women.” She observed Clinton hitch her wagon to her husband after she failed the bar exam in Washington D.C., and said, “she’s had no real career other than riding on the coattails of her horn-dog husband.”

Clinton’s many lies regarding her personal email server are well documented. Anyone needing a refresher watch or read FBI Director James Comey’s responses to Congressman Trey Gowdy’s questions at the recent hearing. Comey confirmed Mrs. Clinton sent and received classified emails, used more than one device, did not turn over all work-related emails and her lawyers did not read the 30,000 messages they deleted on her behalf. Former Secretary of State Colin Powell felt the need to prevent her campaign from pinning her use of a private email server on him. He said: “The truth is, she was using her private server for a year before I sent her a memo telling her what I did as Secretary of State.” Although I respect that many people of good will support Clinton, Safire’s essay rings very true today. The empress has no clothes and this is not pleasant to look at. Perhaps that explains why Clinton has not held a press conference since Dec. 5, 2015.

s we count down the days of summer on our hands and feet and we prepare for yet another tour around the academic merrygo-round, some of us are squeezing in leisure activities that become increasingly harder to do amidst trigonometry tests, English exams, soccer practices and musical rehearsals. What is it about those moments when we fly around the corner of a roller coaster, or when we tilt back and forth in a machine that moves

incredibly quickly that people fi nd so thrilling? Is it the feeling of our stomachs moving inside our bodies, the moment when we experience something completely new and more akin to that which another animal, like a bird, might feel — or is it something more basic? The answers depend on who you are and what you consider fun. I think, however, at the base of these wild rides is something we share in different degrees and circumstances. We enjoy the moment between when we exercise what we feel is the usual level of control over our lives, and that instant which balances between thrill and terror when we give up control. Yes, I know there are people who crave control to such a degree that almost all the decisions they make seem rooted in the power to influence each element or variable in their lives. To return to a scene from childhood, they are holding a crayon in their hand and carefully staying within the lines of life’s coloring book.

Maybe I wasn’t enough of an artist, or maybe I just enjoyed the entropy that comes from my universe which always seems to be moving toward a greater state of disorder, but those undirected marks outside the lines always seemed so liberating. The lines were the equivalent of someone instructing me to, “Do this, stay here, do that.” My squiggly and nonrepresentational lines were enshrined in my response: “No, thanks.” Recently, my son, brother and I went sailing in a strong wind. My brother, who captained the small boat, delighted at the sudden surge of speed as we flew across Port Jefferson Harbor. We were flying through the water at speeds that rivaled nearby motorboats, leaving behind a bubbly, foamy water trail. After several trips back and forth, the wind picked up enough strength that it submerged half of the boat. We heeled so far that my brother and son were heading toward the water. Still planted on the higher side of the boat, I reached

for my son’s life jacket and held on, trying to use our combined weight to keep us from capsizing. Seconds before we reached that tipping point, however, my brother let the sails out, dumping the wind and righting the ship just in time. While the outing was enjoyable up to that point, it reached a whole new level of excitement, especially for my son, who couldn’t wait to tell his cousins about how we started to tip. Naturally, their reaction was to put on their bathing suits, grab their life jackets and head for the boat. So, what is it about those outof-control moments that are so enjoyable, particularly in the retelling? Maybe, it’s just that — for the precise instant when gravity seems optional, when our routine experiences aren’t enough to allow us to predict the future with certainty the way we can with so many other things — anything is possible. And our minds, like our bodies, jump into the excitement of the unknown.
