An AshkeSephard Seder at TBE
Recently, I had the pleasure of participating in a series of concerts with Seraphic Fire, a premier nationally acclaimed vocal ensemble. The performance was entitled “Out of Babylon” and it followed my family‟s journey from Iraq to India, Singapore, and Australia, and finally, my arrival in America. Throughout the performance, we explored different musical approaches to a selection of very ancient sacred poems ranging from simple, plain chant to more elaborate arrangements. I have performed quite extensively over the last 20 years but this particular project struck at the very core of my being. As I sang these ornately textured musical scales and motifs, I thought of my Uncle Shaul who patiently imparted this musical tradition to me, effortlessly demonstrating the subtleties and nuances of this musical and liturgical art form. I also reflected upon my family‟s story, an epic narrative of joy, suffering, effort and triumph of will and realized that all of us have similar stories to tell. The geographical location and road travelled might be different, but the more I listen to people‟s accounts of their families‟ journeys, the more it becomes evident to me that our experience, whether Ashkenazic, Sephardic or Middle Eastern, are remarkably similar. On April 10 at 7pm, I will be performing at Beth El with a group of very talented musicians and spiritual leaders from many different Jewish cultures, ranging from Israel, Argentina, America, Canada and North Africa. In a concert entitled “From Baghdad to Beth El,” we will play and sing traditional Iraqi and Yemenite piyutim - sacred Jewish poems. I will also be performing selections from Bob Dylan and Leonard Cohen, two contemporary Jewish poets who, along with the music of my tradition, have had a monumental impact on my life and artistic development. All of us have a very powerful story to tell. We all are the products of our ancestors‟ journeys as they made their way across oceans, deserts, tropical rainforests and war torn lands to give us an opportunity to grow and evolve.
March and April will bring us a number of special events detailed elsewhere in this Bulletin, including our “Shir Madness” Klezmer Service on March 5, celebrating Shabbat Across America; “Purim on the Rocks” for adults on Saturday night March 20th, featuring the traditional imbibing responsibly! - (I thought we should call it “Purim on the Rox!”). Then, on Purim morning, our always-spectacular carnival; our Scholar-in-Residence Jay Michaelson on April 15-16 (one of the best new commentators on the contemporary Jewish scene), plus our 90th Anniversary Commemorations, all topped off by the special weekend of April 8-10, when we‟ll be celebrating our TBE heritage and marking a new historic milestone on our journey with our new Cantor. With all these stirring events upcoming, plus the great services that we have every week, I‟m going to focus my comments on an event that might not
even happen!
All these other events will certainly happen, and unless ol‟ man winter has one more surprise whammy for us, they will be well-attended. But the congregational second seder, scheduled for April 19 at 7 PM, will happen only if you let us know SOON. We want to do one, but only if you want us to. We‟ve had several of these multigenerational events in the past and they‟ve always been fun. But the costs do not make sense unless we have critical mass – lots of reservations in advance. This year we have the added privilege of having Cantor Mordecai with us. He brings with him a background of Sephardic customs and music that will open up to us a whole new world and deepen our connection to the Jewish people and to our diverse backgrounds and rich history. Of course, there will be lots of familiar customs and songs too, plus activities for the kids. He and I are looking forward to putting together a program that will make for an unforgettable evening – all that and you don‟t have to cook! (BTW, we‟ll only go Sephardic at this seder to a point - no legumes!) So please contact us at templesec@tbe.org to let us know if you are interested and how many adults and kids would be coming. We can‟t know precise prices at the moment but we will try to keep them competitive. Since people need to make plans, we‟ll aim to let people know by March 15 whether the TBE Seder is a “go.” And best wishes from all the Hammermans for a happy Purim and kosher and joyous Passover.

Passover Is for the Children! There is an ancient custom to spread nuts on the seder table before the seder begins. And what is that deep, dark, hidden meaning behind the custom? Simply, to arouse the curiosity of the kids. There is also the well known, time honored custom of hiding the afikomen and letting the children hunt for it. Again, another tradition designed to keep children involved at the seder. The following list is just a few ideas that will help keep the kids involved:
As we head into the Purim/ Passover season, one needs to think about the incredible stories, deeds and lessons learned from a group of all too familiar figures. We look with pride and easily connect with Moses, Aaron, Miriam, Mordecai and Esther. They and many others should serve as a source of inspiration. Not too long ago I received an email from someone who “Googled” an article that I wrote, in the Beth El Bulletin exactly one year ago, about my family. He is a distant relative and was trying to learn more about an Uncle Herbert Treidel who lived in my father‟s town and moved to Australia during the Shoah. We spoke on the telephone and I told him all that I knew about my family and our North African origins and how the family ultimately made their way to the Rhineland area of Germany. I called my 96 year-old uncle in Denver who related more information to me about Herbert‟s family who were distant cousins and, like my grandparents, were in the cattle business. Having painfully reviewed the deportation papers of the Jews in Mayen, I knew that Herbert‟s parents had perished in the Holocaust and I promised to try to find out which camps they had been sent to. Today‟s Jewish youth is two generations removed from the Shoah and three or four generations away from our immigrant ancestors. Like the Purim and Passover stories, it is just as critical that future generations understand who they are. There are many incredible stories to preserve along with interesting information that should be passed on to our children. I am the family historian and the “go to person” when anyone is interested in family history. Usually every family has at least one “go to person.” I want my children and their children to know about my grandfather William Chait who, at the age of 15, walked from Galicia to Rotterdam to board a ship for America just one day prior to the start of World War I. They need to know that my great-grandparents were separated for 12 years before they were reunited in New York City. My great-grandmother Lena Chait (4‟9” tall) supported two little boys in Galicia during World War I by washing clothes for the soldiers, carrying 100 pound sacks of potatoes on her back, and picking up lumps of coal along the railroad tracks to keep her family warm. They should know about my great-great-grandfather Berka Brill who, at the age of nine, was kidnapped by the Russian Army in Kovno, Lithuania and was forced to serve for 25 years in Helsinki, Finland where he ultimately established a home and business for his 16 children. They were all super-heroes in my eyes and how they lived and survived should serve as an inspiration to future generations. It is incumbent upon all of us to preserve our family history and share it with our offspring. Best wishes for a happy Purim and a kosher Pesach!
Have head scarves and robes, suitable for desert wear, and sheets to make tents available for dress up and role playing. Put out a suitcase and encourage children to pack things that they would take if they were going to move away very quickly and had to decide really fast. A variation is to let each participant pick the one most important thing that cannot be left behind. Put some small plastic frogs on the table for counting and sorting. Adapt puppets to portray Pharaoh, Moses, Aaron and Miriam for dramatic play. Take a Pretend Taste Of Bitter Herb - Make A Funny Face As the meal is served, name your favorite Pesach food. Say, “My compliments to the chef.” Have children pitch-in with preparations. They can: Make place cards for the guests; help set the table; clean the house. Play “I Spy” to identify or introduce ritual objects, Pesach foods or anything else at the seder; for example: I spy something … round on the table (answer: seder plate); … squishy that Grandma gave you (answer: a pillow); … hard and crunchy (answer: matzah); … that reminds us of laying bricks (answer:
haroset)

JAY MICHAELSON Scholar-in-Residence
Never question the power of music! Many times throughout the years your Rabbi and Hazzan, together with the Adult Choir and/or Jr. Choir, have brought the wealth of our liturgy and its music to churches in the Stamford area. Conversely, church groups have performed at our Temple. In the 1980‟s and 1990‟s a series of concerts entitled “A Celebration of Choirs,” sponsored by The Council of Churches and Synagogues, were performed in Stamford one year at Temple Beth El. I was privileged to be the musical director of the concert in 1991, which featured choirs from eleven religious institutions and held at St. John‟s Roman Catholic Church on Atlantic Street. While the respect and understanding of each other‟s liturgy and music was vastly heightened, it could not “hold a candle” to the impact generated by a concert performed this past November by a chorus of 20 cantors at the Basilica of Santa Maria degli Angeli e die Martiri, a cavernous church in Rome adapted by Michelandelo from the ancient Baths of Diocletian. The reform cantors, members of the American Conference of Cantors, serve congregations in California, Arizona, New York, New Jersey, Maryland, Virginia, Georgia, Florida and Texas. The concert featured a range of prayers and texts set to both traditional melodies and music by composers dating from the Renaissance to the present day. Before each piece a cantor stepped forward to describe the selection, explain its place in the Jewish religious service and provide information about the musical setting. “Our goal,” stated one cantor, “was to educate people in Jewish culture and the synagogue. We feel that through music you can heal, make friends, touch people and reach out.” U.S. Ambassador to the Vatican, Miguel Humberto Diaz called the concert “...a wonderful opportunity. Any kind of art, especially music, is a way to bring people together for the sake of the common good.” Among the 200 in attendance were many Vatican dignitaries. The Pope had hoped to attend the 90-minute concert, but did not attend due to illness. The music was very well received, especially an original selection composed by Cantor Erik Contzius of New Rochelle, a setting of Psalm 116 with words in Hebrew and Latin. Cantor Tracey Scher of Temple Rodef Shalom in Falls Church, Virginia - in my neighborhood - stated, “When we completed each piece, you could hear our voices ringing throughout the basilica for five seconds after we finished. We knew this was an historic moment in Catholic-Jewish history. It was a feeling that we had done something great in the world.” To my dear colleagues - Yasher Koach!
Shabbat, April 15-16, 2011 Freedom from Seder Slavery: Cultivating the Spirituality of Passover Jay Michaelson is a writer, scholar, and activist whose work focuses on the intersections of spirituality, Judaism, sexuality, and law. Jay has both an academic background and a personal commitment to spiritual practice. He holds a J.D. from Yale Law School, an M.A. in Religious Studies from Hebrew University, and a B.A. Magna Cum Laude from Columbia, and is currently completing a Ph.D. in Jewish Thought at Hebrew University. In 2008-09, he spent five months on silent meditation retreat in the Theravadan Buddhist tradition, in America and Nepal, and has sat one-, two-, and sixweek retreats in that tradition for seven years. In the Jewish tradition, Jay has learned and taught Kabbalah since 1993, completed the Elat Chayyim Jewish Meditation Advanced Training program, spent two years at the Pardes Institute of Jewish Studies, and has been a practicing halachic Jew for three decades. On Friday night, following services that begin at 7:30 p.m., Jay’s topic will be: A Better Way to Answer the Four Questions: Using the Seder’s Q and A to engage the next generation of American Jews. On Shabbat morning (services begin at 9:30 a.m.) Jay will speak on: Beyond Maxwell House: Creating an Embodied, Enriching Passover Seder. On Shabbat afternoon his topic will be: The Deeper Meaning of Passover: Using the Wisdom of Kabbalistic Sources, Discovering Passover’s Spiritual Side. The Scholar-in-Residence is sponsored by Penny and Michael Horowitz in loving memory of Bessie Silver, z’l, and Millie Reiss, z’l.

Barbara has a long history of active involvement in the Jewish world. She will be receiving a Master of Arts degree in Jewish Education from the William B. Davidson School of Education at the Jewish Theological Seminary this coming May. This past year, she was an intern at the Bureau of Jewish Education here in Stamford. Barbara has served as a youth director in Coral Gables, Florida and helped to found a youth group in Wellington, Florida. Additionally, Barbara has been a Jewish educator in a number of congregations. She has directed a camp, served as an art director, parenting instructor and an admissions counselor at a university.

Barbara is well-organized, enthusiastic and energized to do great work with our youth community. She has already begun connecting with key people and beginning work with our youth and Young Jewish Professionals. ADULT EDUCATION APPLES AND ORANGES A New Look at Comparative Religion with Dr. Elissa Kaplan March 3, 10, 17
LEARNING & LATTE March 8 and April 12 at 7:30 p.m. Stamford‟s long-running, monthly interfaith, free-flowing “tri-alogue” - Christianity, Islam and Judaism featuring Rabbi Hammerman, in dialogue with other local clergy of all faiths.
Rabbi Abba Hillel Silver said, “Religion is the supreme art of humanity.” When thinking about Judaism and the world‟s religions, the metaphor of comparing apples and oranges comes to mind. Using this image, we will explore Judaism, Christianity, Islam, Hinduism and Buddhism. Each religion has both a unique history and basic elements. While traveling around the world, we will investigate ideas of God and faith, authority and leadership, revelation, celebration, salvation, the meaning of life and core values at each stop along the way. Join us as we discover signposts of comparison and contrast and add to our own ideas about religion itself.

A WONDERFUL STROLL DOWN MEMORY LANE with Dr. Ruth Brennan and Her Family Friday, April 22, 2011 (after services)
ONE PEOPLE - MANY PERSPECTIVES with Dr. Elissa Kaplan March 24, 31 and April 7 at 7:30 p.m. According to Dr. Seuss, “Sometimes the questions are complicated and the answers are simple.” When thinking about Jews in the United States, perhaps the questions might be simple while the answers tend to be quite complicated. Let us explore together questions like the following: What happened at Sinai? What is God? and What is the Jewish view of history from creation to the end of days? We will consider the Orthodox, Conservative, Reform and Reconstructionist (and perhaps others, too) perspectives on these and other matters. We will be using a Tanach and a Siddur. Bring your own or use the ones at Temple Beth El. All other materials will be provided.
Spend an evening with Dr. Ruth Brennan and members of her family for a readers theater presentation of excerpts from her book Gathering Family on Friday evening, April 22 following services that begin at 7:30 p.m. Gathering Family is a story about an Eastern European family who fled Russia and sought freedom in America at the turn of the 20 th century. What is remarkable about this memoir is that it recounts three generations of the same family and sets their immigrant lives against the political and social history of the time, both in Europe and in America. Filled with colorful and unforgettable characters, you are drawn into firstgeneration and second-generation experiences and are reminded, again and again, how the lives change but the values remain steadfast. The authentic Yiddish accents add much to the ambiance of the evening. Selections from Gathering Family will be read aloud followed by a question/answer session in a cabaret-like setting. REMARKS BY JUDY ARONIN Here are my remarks from the award ceremony during which Eileen H. Rosner was honored by the Volunteer Center of Southwestern Fairfield County: I feel compelled to tell you that when Eileen first learned she was to be awarded this honor her reaction was, “Oh my, I don’t have time to attend this ceremony! It is my great honor and my great privilege to present this volunteer award to you, Eileen!!! You are a shining example of what it means to volunteer and the difference it makes. Rabbi Tarfon, an ancient rabbi, teaches us, “It is not incumbent upon you to complete the work, but neither are you at liberty to desist from it.” Those of us who know you recognize that never are you engaged in this work for praise or to seek the limelight nor to receive accolades! Soooooooo, we want you to understand and to grasp this is a gift to us, your dedicated friends, your colleagues and your community! It is a thrill and it is our need to recognize your works in a public manner and I am thrilled to represent the community which benefits so incredibly as a result of your time, your energy and your dedication!!! And so, please allow me the honor to share with you the work which Eileen accomplishes: Eileen H. Rosner = Currently President of Temple Beth El, a thriving, egalitarian Conservative synagogue here in Stamford. And we are so pleased to have our own Rabbi Joshua Hammerman and Cantor George Mordecai present this morning as we honor our Eileen!!! We know, Eileen, that you honor your parents, Rose and Franklin Rosner, z’l, as you commit to this work. They were soooooooo incredibly dedicated to the health and the vitality of Temple Beth El! For many years Eileen has served on The Friends of Ferguson Board and has been co-chair of the Ferguson Library Literary Competition. She serves The Jewish Historical Society of Lower Fairfield County as a volunteer in the Harry Rosenbaum JHS Judaica Library and assists with the historical Society archives. In addition, she serves on the advisory board of The Ballet School of Stamford and chairs the annual auction for the school. One of her more recent commitments is participation in a special volunteer program at the Bennett Cancer Center, here in Stamford. Eileen bakes for Stamford Hospital cancer patients and staff. What is soooooooo remarkable about you, Eileen, is how you are completely and entirely and selflessly dedicated to each of these organizations. Because you are on the front lines, you see, you discover a need before the rest of us are even aware of the situation and once you see the need, you are ever-present to take action and to make a difference! Each of these organizations: Temple Beth El, The Ballet School, The Ferguson Library, The Jewish Historical Society, the patients and staff at the Bennett Center - indeed our entire community is the richer and the stronger for your continuing effort and passionate dedication!!! You are a shining example of how to make a difference in your community! We know you will continue in these leadership capacities and we plan and pray for your continuing health and strength and energy so that you may continue to contribute so meaningfully to your community! I thought my community was safe.” “I can’t believe the stereotypes that people have about Jews and that they actually repeat them!” “I thought he was my friend - but why would he have made that comment about Jews? It really makes me feel uncomfortable.” Newspaper headlines jump out at us when an anti-Semitic incident is reported. We’re outraged by those actions and wonder what the world is truly about. But what about those times when we aren’t quite sure about someone’s comment? We feel uncomfortable, angry or confused about responding either because we’re concerned about drawing more attention to ourselves, or just because we don’t know what to say. The Anti-Defamation League’s “Confronting Anti-Semitism” workshop gives teens and their families an opportunity to share thoughts and experiences, and offers tools to respond effectively and challenge anti-Semitic stereotypes you may encounter. JOIN US FOR PURIM ON THE ROCKS Saturday, March 19th – 8:00 p.m. A reading of the Megillah for adults will begin at 8:00 p.m. followed by a special edition of
PURIM ON THE ROCKS! Scotch Tasting – Beer (& root beer) and Wine Cheese & crackers & assorted snacks and, of course, hamantaschen!
On March 18, we will recognize the newest members of our TBE family - those who have joined between 2001 and 2011. We will display memorabilia from those dates - programs, journals and pictures. Members of our Adult Choir, both past and present, will join Cantor Mordecai in singing our way into Shabbat and then we will share memories in the social hall following services.
Ron Zussman, the former Brand Director of The Glenlivet, will be the host and guide for an evening of scotch tasting. We will learn about the history and lore and regional styles of single-malts and find out what types of single-malts are alike, and vary by age and cask types. We will sample six single-malts to provide you with a broad range of flavor profiles.
Our celebration will conclude on the weekend of April 8 with two special programs. On Friday night, we will enjoy a congregational Shabbat dinner at 6:00 p.m. followed by Kabbalat Shabbat services starting at 7:30 p.m. After services, comedian Johnny Lampert will entertain us.
Of course for those not into scotch, we will have beer, wine and soda.
At our Kiddush luncheon on Saturday morning, past presidents of our Temple, our Men‟s Club and Sisterhood will be recognized.

On Sunday, April 10, the celebration ends with “From Baghdad to Beth El,” a concert reflecting the musical journey of Cantor George Mordecai and featuring special guests.
Sunday morning, beginning at 9:30 a.m., there will be a Family Megillah reading, costume parade with prizes, and our fabulous Purim carnival - all from 10:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.
Our virtual journal will give you a chance to share your family‟s connection to TBE. You could include your family tree highlighting the members of your family who were also members of Temple Beth El. You might want to write about your family history at TBE or share a story of a time or event that was significant to you, your family or TBE. Another option is to welcome Cantor Mordecai and his family. Whatever your choice, please consider adding something to the journal and to help support our Temple as we celebrate 90 years of caring and community.
Purim is the only holiday when it’s a mitzvah to imbibe, but we also ask that, even on Purim especially on Purim - everyone drink responsibly.

Sunday, March 6 at 9:30 a.m. Days of Awe, by Achy Obejas Sisterhood of the Book kicks off a new season with what promises to be stimulating discussions (and coffee, of course) covering books by Jewish authors or about Jewish topics, including biographies. Facilitated by Linda Simon. We start with Days of Awe by Achy Obejas. Lyrically written, the novel explores the story of Alejandra and her parents‟ flight from Cuba to Miami and Chicago in the wake of the Cuban revolution in 1959. “Borrowed” from the author‟s life, the story is about Cuba‟s hidden Jews, a family‟s search for its origins, and anusims - Jews who survived the Inquisition by pretending to be Catholic.
