You might be interested in knowing that... The Bauta is undoubtedly the mask most used by Venetians during the famous Venice Carnival; in the past it was mainly used in theatres and young women were compelled to wear it. The origin of the name comes probably from German Behuten: protect.
Bauta
It indeed protected the identity of the women wearing it. It was firstly produced and wore in Venice in the XIII century, but it became very popular between the XVII and the XVIII century. The Bauta was the only mask Venetians could wear during Saint Marc days and Ascension Day whereas the other masks were forbidden.
