Carol’s Cabin

Carol’s Cabin explores the relationships between objects and intimate spaces that shape our lives. Through a series of vibrant interiors, Piggott transforms a familiar environment into a study of color, pattern, and visual dialogue, revealing the extraordinary within the everyday.

The exhibition centers on the cabin of fellow artist Carol, whose eclectic collections and ever-changing arrangements provide the foundation for Piggott’s compositions. Rather than simply documenting the space, he searches for the formal relationships that emerge between objects, colors, and textures. Many of the paintings incorporate his own works hanging throughout the cabin, creating layered compositions in which paintings appear within paintings.

Though united by a single setting, each work offers a distinct perspective, demonstrating how a familiar place can continually inspire new ways of seeing. Working intuitively, Piggott is drawn to unexpected visual connections, balancing careful observation with imagination to create paintings that are both formally rigorous and delightfully playful.

Created following a period of separation and reunion with Carol, Carol’s Cabin also carries a deeply personal resonance. The exhibition serves as both a love letter to their shared creative life and a testament to the enduring influence of place, partnership, and curiosity. As Piggott reflects, “It takes a lot of curiosity to find the relationships between things.”

Mike Piggott was born in 1963 in Charlottesville, VA. He received his BA at Virginia Commonwealth University and studied at the Winchester College of Art, Winchester, England. Mike Piggott has had numerous solo exhibitions at the Maya Frodeman Gallery (formerly Tayloe Piggott Gallery), Jackson, WY, the Lynchburg Fine Arts Center, Lynchburg, VA, Visions West Contemporary in Bozeman and Livingston, MT and Denver, CO, and at the Neapolitan Gallery, Richmond, VA, and participated in various group exhibitions. Mike Piggott lives and works in Victor, Idaho.

Artist Statement

These are all about looking for what’s formal in the middle of everything funky. Carol and I were broken up for about a year and a half. Somewhere in that time the earliest version of these Carol’s Cabin paintings went to a collector, which was great but also really kind of hard because I thought I’d never see the cabin again. Carol and I are back together, but she hasn’t seen all these paintings of the cabin.

Every time I go in there, she’s got a new weird group of things. Sometimes it’s almost impossible to find a formal relationship between them. To avoid photorealism, I almost need to add the rest of the idea to the painting. Or her grouping will be cohesive because it’s like a whole bunch of the same thing. Like a bunch of cactuses on a table. I just never know.

Over time more and more of my paintings have turned up on the wall there. So that turns it into this whole other circle. My paintings really do hang behind the chairs sometimes, and maybe there really is a mirror repeating the painting and all the funk, but I can’t always find the original. Things I’ve done for years show up again and again. Like all these arrowleaf. They usually have a whole bunch of flowers, but I always paint them with just one. I put one on top of Carol’s Trunks on a Trunk. The whole cabin is full of her weird sense of humor like that. It takes a lot of curiosity to find the relationships between things.. - Mike Piggott
