In my wildest dreams, I never could have imagined that the food festival we all know and love would turn to a virtual format in its 37th year. Restaurants are the heart and soul of our event, and the industry has been devastated by our new reality as a result of COVID-19. I’m honored to serve as board chair during this historic time, as we find new ways to enjoy local food and support our beloved restaurant community.
Thank you to my fellow volunteer board members who found time to help put this event together while adjusting to a new normal in their personal and professional lives during a global pandemic. My sincerest thanks to Connie Wending of Sell-utions, Inc., our event management and sponsorship agency. She came to the board with an incredibly creative idea to reinvent our festival in a virtual format, and has done an amazing job leading the charge under extraordinary circumstances.

The Taste of Buffalo presented by TOPS is the largest twoday food festival in the United States. It began in 1984 and we are celebrating our 37th year - for the first time ever as a virtual event!
The Taste is a not-for-profit corporation registered with the State of New York and is run by an all-volunteer board of directors and Connie Wendling of Sell-utions Inc., our event management and sponsorship agency.
While we will not be eating along Delaware Avenue with hundreds of thousands of our friends this July, the Taste of Buffalo is committed to keeping the summer tradition alive and encouraging support for our local restaurants.
With the reinvented Taste of Buffalo at Home, you can help the restaurants, food trucks, and wineries we all love so much at a time when your support is urgently needed. Thirty-two restaurants that were slated to participate in our 2020 live event, along with Tops Markets, will instead offer Taste Takeout at their own businesses. These are special menu items featuring full-sized portions for guests to order and enjoy at home. Some may also offer patio or in-restaurant dining. Guests can contact individual businesses for those details. Five wineries have Taste Takeout deals as well.
Understanding the financial hardship that our area restaurateurs have endured due to COVID-19, the Taste refunded all entry fees for the original event or if so desired by the participant, the fee was rolled over for 2021. The Taste is not charging our participating restaurants any fee for the virtual festival. Every purchase you make during Taste of Buffalo at Home directly benefits the businesses involved.

The Taste of Buffalo, Inc. in its continuing commitment to Western New York, is proud to offer a scholarship program for college-bound students in the eight counties of Western New York who will pursue a degree in Foodservice or Hospitality industries. Students are evaluated based on academic achievement, experience, enthusiasm, recommendations, community involvement, goals and objectives, and overall interest.

Shaleigh Damcott graduated from Westfield Academy and Central School in 2020. She attended Erie Chautauqua Cattaraugus BOCES- LoGuidce Educational Center for her Junior and Senior years studying Culinary Arts. Her junior year she was inducted into the National Technical Honor Society and was able to maintain this privilege through her senior year. She also was awarded other attendance and outstanding student of month awards.
Shaleigh has really developed her love of cooking and baking since attending the Culinary Arts program at BOCES. She now creates new recipes and bakes new creations on a regular basis. She is looking forward to attending D’Avolio Culinary Institute in the fall.
I’m a senior at Orchard Park High School. In the Fall, I’ll be attending SUNY Brockport where I’ll major in Recreation Management. I hope to use this degree to work within and support our community and the surrounding area. Volunteering is a big part of my life. When I was very sick and in the hospital, our community helped us out in so many ways. I’d like to pay it forward in any way I can.
I plan to graduate from Williamsville East high school in June 2020 and will be finishing my two-year program at Harkness Career Center in the baking and pastry arts program. I then will attend the Niagara Falls Culinary Institute for Baking and Pastry Arts. I am super excited to continue my life of baking and can’t wait to learn more. While we have been on Pause I have learned how to make sourdough bread using a starter and hope to keep it going till I can my own bakery in New York City. I enjoy baking other sweet treats such as cookies and cakes for my family and friends.
