PUBLISHER’S
Growing up in Kentucky, we didn’t go out to eat very much. Nearly everything I ate was enjoyed right on our kitchen table, surrounded by the same family as each night before, and prepared by the same person. You wouldn’t find a lot of takeout containers or pizza boxes in our fridge, and when we did venture out to eat it was usually at the same handful of places.
It’s a sharp contrast to my life on the island, when dining out has become second nature. Maybe spending so many years eating the same old, same old, gave me a heightened appreciation for the embarrassment of riches we have here. Here you can enjoy seafood that was swimming that morning, caught just a short boat ride from where you’re eating. You can take a gastronomic world tour, with stops in Mexico, the Caribbean, Asia, and Africa. Even the vegans among us have plenty of options.
But it’s not just the food we’re able to enjoy here, it’s the people we get to enjoy it with. One thing we don’t talk about enough is food’s incredible ability to bring people together. If you truly want to appreciate this power, don’t serve any at your next party. See how long before people start politely making their way to the door. Or, on the flip side, start roasting up a batch of oysters and see how quickly you draw a crowd.
The traditional Lowcountry oyster roast is one of the fall’s biggest social dining experiences. But it’s far from the only one, during this season when cooler temperatures draw everyone out from the air conditioned shelter of their home. The Italian Heritage Festival gives you the full Italian experience just like Nonna used to make, among a hungry crowd of hundreds. The Rhythm and Brews Festival lets you sample some of our local craft breweries while enjoy some exciting sounds. Music lovers definitely want to mark their calendars for the Hilton Head Island Jam Songwriter Festival and the Jazz For All Ages Jazz Fest, two events that bring world-class talent to our island. And of course, football season means you never have to dig into some wings or pizza alone. On an island of transplants, you’re going to find a bar or restaurant to represent your team where you can celebrate a win or commiserate over a loss among new friends around great food.
This time of year showcases everything that makes this island special – a bounty of incredible restaurants, world-class entertainment and some of the finest people you’ll ever share a table with. Get out there and enjoy it.

SMASHING SUCCESS
With Uncle Billy’s Burger Joint, the Reilley family invites the whole island to the family cookout
BY
BARRY KAUFMAN
PHOTOS BY ROB KAUFMAN
There’s one in every family. That one commander of the coals who will, inevitably, be drafted to man the grill at the family cookout. It’s partly an honor, partly a duty. Because if you can make the perfect burger, you have the responsibility to share it.
And when your family is the Reilley family, the first family of island eateries, that mantle of grillmaster takes on even greater prestige. If the family behind CRAB (Coastal Restaurants and Bars), with decades of experience in the restaurant business and a skilled palate for delicious food, chooses you to be their go-to
burger chef? You must be doing something right.
“That was the inspiration behind it. My dad’s brother-inlaw Bill Rankin,” said Thomas Reilley. “He was always the grillmaster. We wanted to create something like that, where it feels like you’re sitting out in the backyard with the grill going,”
Drawing on Uncle Billy’s passion for grilling, CRAB built his namesake burger joint from the ground up – figuratively, at least.
“We sampled numerous different grinds and cuts to find
the best blend for our burgers,” said Jay Ammons, who is overseeing Uncle Billy’s Burger Joint as well as the entire surrounding campus. “What we wound up creating was the perfect blend of ground chuck, brisket and short rib. Then we tested different ways to smash them and I think we’ve really perfected it.”
You only need to taste one of their signature “Smashbillys,” like the Steakhouse Smashburger: a symphony of flavors combining juicy beef, ooey-gooey cheese, crispy fried onions, roasted garlic, and smoky aioli, all sandwiched between a perfectly buttered, griddled bun. The intense care that went into every topping, down to ensuring a blissfully textured char on the bun, sets an entirely new standard in burgercraft.
In fact, you don’t even need to taste it for yourself. You can get a feel for the experience just by standing next to someone who is.
“Marty (Pellici), the general manager at The Crazy Crab, actually moaned when he took his first bite,” said Reilley. “He told me, ‘You know it’s good when it creates an audible reaction.”
The peak of zen simplicity, the menu puts the burgers front and center, with the classic sidekicks of chicken fingers and fries the only outliers. But that’s not to say you’ll want for options. Part of the appeal at Uncle Billy’s Burger Joint is that you can also order off the menu at Papi Tequila’s right across the plaza.
“It’s not your typical dining experience… we want people to bounce around or sit in one place and decide where they want to order from,” said Reilley. “You can pick and choose. If you have one family member dead set on tacos, and another dead set on a burger, you can get them both.”
This menu sharing is just the first step in what the Reilley family has planned for the plaza that bears their name. Eventually, they hope to create a “one-stop shop” for large families, echoing the popularity of food halls but setting it amid one of Hilton Head Island’s most popular hotspots.
“I think the main goal is to make the plaza as lively and energetic as possible, adding in things like Pickleball as well as other restaurant concepts,” said Reilley. “This is just another piece of the puzzle.”
The next step will actually take place within the walls at Uncle Billy’s. Their milkshakes, a classic accompaniment to a burger, have already gained a rabid following. They’ll soon be joined on the menu by a classic root beer float bar.
“It’s going to feel like an old school soda fountain,” said Reilley. “We’re looking at having a range of different handcrafted root beers as well as local root beers for people to mix-and-match with their ice cream.”
From there, the Reilley family will add their next concept this summer in Reilley’s Plaza. This time, they’re taking the same dedicated approach they’ve taken to burgers and applying it to pizza.
“There are a million different recipes for artisanal style dough, and we’re going to find the right one. In fact, we want to have the best pizza on the island,” said Ammons. “We want it nice and airy, so we’ve even been experimenting with different ovens.”
Once completed, it will add another element to the dynamic dining experience that CRAB is creating in Reilley’s Plaza. “I’m very excited about bringing new energy to this plaza,” said
Ammons. “It’s really becoming a place where families can just come out, order exactly what they want, and just enjoy themselves.”
As next steps go, Uncle Billy’s Burger Joint is a big one. So how did the real Uncle Billy react when he found out the family’s latest endeavor would have his name on it? If you know your own family’s grillmaster, you can expect that he was thrilled in his own stoic way.
“He didn’t react too much,” said Reilley with a laugh. “But he thought it was pretty cool.”

Yeah, Baby
Fat Baby’s Pizza and Subs became the island’s favorite pizza joint because they do one thing right – everything.
BY BARRY KAUFMAN • PHOTOS BY ROB KAUFMAN
Few foods ignite a gourmand’s passion – or, more specifically, the need to argue over food – like pizza. One person’s favorite slice is garbage compared to another person’s hometown shop. The great New York / Chicago debate may never be settled in our lifetime. And if you dare utter the word “pizza” around someone from New Jersey, be prepared for at least a five minute monologue about the superiority of Garden State pies.
It’s hard to believe that until the 1950s, the average American didn’t even know what pizza was. That was when two enterprising brothers in Kansas launched a small hole-in-the-wall called “Pizza Hut” (so called because they only had room for three letters after pizza on the sign they were given). Introducing this obscure Neapolitan street food to unsuspecting Midwesterners opened the floodgates, creating an entire industry and launching an eternal debate between pizza faithful.
For most of us, debating over styles of pizza is pointless. As the old saying goes (and we’re paraphrasing), pizza is like making whoopie. Even when it’s bad, it’s good.
But when it’s good? When a pizza hits that sweet spot of
perfectly robust sauce under melty cheese, swirling around a crust that provides that perfect pillowy crispness? When we find that pizza, we never want anything else. From that point, the only thing worth debating are toppings.
Few places on the island can claim this level of well-earned loyalty like Fat Baby’s Pizza. When it launched in 2006, the hype was immediately off the charts and one of the great word-of-mouth campaigns in the island’s culinary history began. It was that rarest of things – a pie that could unite pizza lovers from every camp.
If you swore by a foldable New York slice with a crackery edge, you’d still find enchantment in the more substantial but no less sublime crust at Fat Baby’s. If you were more the Chicago type, the mouth-watering flavors of their house made sauces and freshly prepared toppings won you over.
“It’s always about quality first,” said Fat Baby’s Pizza and Subs owner Eric Overstake, fondly known to locals as “EZ”. “EZ” came on board in 2012, partnering with original owner Pete Bernstein who has since sold his stake to his former partner. “Pete and I had a similar philosophy on that right from the beginning…
Ultimately, I like good food, and I want to serve good food to people who want good food. If you want corporate crap, it is across the street.”
“EZ”’s trademark prickly charm is part of Fat Baby’s appeal, echoing the gruff charisma of mom-and-pop pizza joint owners the world over. But don’t confuse it with rudeness. “EZ” just knows exactly what he has.
“Our Py’s Pie is one of the best pepperoni pizza you can buy. Everything about it is homemade, so the flavors just pop out,” he said. When he took the reins, “EZ” ramped up the rest of the menu, adding items like baby back ribs and blackened chicken to round out the selection of pizza joint staples like pasta and subs. “Pete’s mentality was to focus on the kids. I like to focus on the families. The kids love our pizza, and they steer where the family goes. So we know the families will come, but I want to give them some more items that keep them happy.”
As a pizza lover and parent, this writer knows there is one thing that will always make our particular demographic happy – good beer. And that’s one area where “EZ” has really stepped up over the last few years.
“I created an entirely new beer list this past off season. We have a lot of local stuff,” he said. In addition to offerings from Hilton Head Brewing Company, Side Hustle Brewing and Southern Barrel, he’s brought in some famous Charleston breweries like Edmond’s Oast. But one brewery in particular has turned out to be the perfect complement to Fat Baby’s mouthwatering flavor. “We keep three different Lincoln & South beers on draft. Their hazy IPA has taken the island by storm. People are loving it.”
Like that classic hometown pizza joint, the one that always springs to mind when we think of Friday nights out with the family, it’s a place that just feels right. It’s a place where we know that whether we go with the old standby or get adventurous with something new from the menu, it’s going to blow us away. And we know we’ll always be welcomed by the same familiar faces, some who have been part of the team for over a decade at Fat Baby’s.
“We definitely keep some people. My goal is to train once and never have to rehire,” said “EZ”. “My focus has always been to make sure the people who work here are making a living. I want everyone to have the same life I have.”
Taking care of employees, taking care of customers, and taking care of each dish that goes out by ensuring it’s crafted from the finest ingredients ever. You can argue all you want about New York vs. Chicago, thin crust vs. thick crust, or whether pineapple counts as a topping. But when it comes to Hilton Head Island’s favorite pizza joint, Fat Baby’s Pizza and Subs settled that debate long ago.

RHYTHM & BREWS
By Allyson Jones
Get ready to raise a glass or two in celebration of the season when the 3rd Annual Hilton Head Rhythm & Brews festival returns to Shelter Cove Park on Saturday, September 27.
Billed as “the ultimate combination of music, microbrews and views,” this “pitcher perfect” event allows ticket holders unlimited tastings of an expertly curated selection of craft beers, spirits and wines accompanied by live music overlooking Broad Creek.
Presented by the Hilton Head Island Wine & Food Festival to complement their weeklong spring event which celebrated its 40th anniversary in March, nearly 1,000 attendees enjoyed more than 50 tastings from craft breweries, distilleries, and wineries, all while rocking to the sounds of Rider during the 2024 Rhythm & Brews.
Ticket holders receive a keepsake tasting glass to sample a selection of seasonal Oktoberfest beers, plus pilsners, lagers, porters, IPAs, hard ciders, seltzers and more from breweries across the country and down the street.
Among last year’s two dozen featured brewers were California’s Sierra Nevada, Asheville’s Ginger’s Revenge, the Charlotte based Bird Song Brewing Co. and Resident Culture, Deschutes Brewery from Bend, OR, Charleston’s own Southbound Brewing and Estuary from nearby Johns Island, as well as local favorites such as Hilton Head Brewing Co., Lot 9 Brewing Co., Lincoln & South Brewing Company and Shellring Ale Works.
Meanwhile, Burnt Church Distillery, Bulrush Gin, Hilton Head Distillery and Mr. Fingers Alibi Gin served some of their signature spirits while Biltmore Winery, Gonzalez Byass Family and the Hilton Head Wine & Food Festival offered wine tastings. Plus, access to local food vendors selling plates at festival-friendly prices is included in the ticket price.
This fall celebration will once again benefit a great cause -ALES for ALS™.
An international fundraising campaign, each year hundreds of Ales for ALS™ breweries across the country receive a free blend of experimental hops donated by B.T. Loftus Ranches and YCH Hops.
Breweries then raise funds and awareness for ALS (a.k.a. Lou Gehrig’s disease) research at the ALS Therapy Development Institute (ALS TDI) through sales of their unique, limited-edition Ales for ALS™ beers created using these donated hops. Since 2013, nearly $8 million has been raised to cure this devastating disease.
Rhythm & Brews is strictly for those 21 and older; children and pets are not allowed. Pre-Sale General Admission tickets may be purchased online at hiltonheadrhythmandbrews.com which include all-inclusive drink tastings, a keepsake tasting glass and live music from 2-5 p.m. VIP ticket holders are allowed early entry at 1 p.m. and receive a larger tasting glass.

The Minds Behind The Tunes
The Nashville sound has made Hilton Head Island its second home with the
Island Jam Songwriter Festival.
BY BARRY KAUFMAN • PHOTOS PROVIDED
Even cowboys need to take vacations. And few years ago, Nashville-based event producer David Preston found them the perfect spot. Introduced to Hilton Head Island by local native Reid Perry, whom he’d met through Perry’s son’s band Lost in the Media, Preston came to the island with an eye on establishing a musical festival. He immediately saw the appeal.
Speaking before the second annual Island Jam Songwriter Festival, he said, ““I was really blown away by the facilities and the creative atmosphere that exists there. It seemed like the perfect location to put on a festival… we represent millions of songwriters, and living in Nashville it was pretty much like calling my friends and saying, ‘Lets all go to Hilton Head and have a good time.’”
Those friends, representing the cream of Nashville’s famed songwriter crop, quickly saw what had attracted Preston to the island.
“This is our third year and we’ve had to grow because everyone who’s ever played here wants to come back,” he said. “We’ve had to expand this thing island-wide, to where it becomes more of a songwriter infestation.”
In this year’s third iteration, the main event at Lowcountry Celebration Park will be joined by three days of performances that will see a blend of Nashville and Hilton Head Island songwriters playing at venues from the Beach House and The Westin to The Jazz Corner and the Liberty Oak. Shows will also hit some of the island’s most musicfriendly establishments like FISH, The Big Bamboo and Lincoln & South.
“We’ve tried a lot of different things in finding what really works,” said Preston. “We’re doing two shows at the Liberty Oak this year, a Saturday show during Shrimpfest… there’s going to be a lot going on. That’s why we’ve release an app with the full schedule on it so people can plan their day.”
There’s going to be a lot of events, but like Preston said, the songwriter community in Nashville, essentially Mecca for songwriters, has embraced Hilton Head.
“LOCASH is a perfect example of that,” said Preston. “The boys came down the first year and fell in love. They’re excited to be coming back to play and to host their LOCASH Golf Bash and I feel like Hilton Head has kind of adopted them. They’re coming off of a number one song, ‘Hometown Home’ and they feel like Hilton Head has given them good luck and a real boost to their career.’”
They’re not the only songwriters coming to Island Jam with some serious accolades under their belt. Songwriters Hall of Famer Jeffrey Steele will be making his return this year along with a who’s who of songwriters like Chuck Cannon. His “I Love the Way You Love Me” was both a number one hit and ACA Song of the Year winner for John Michael Montgomery. And they’re just a few of the luminaries in a lineup that spans TikTok stars like Alison Nichols and George Ducas who helped pioneer the new country sound of the 90s and 00s with songs for Garth Brooks, The Chicks and Trisha Yearwood.
“The quality of songwriters we’ve been able to bring in is off the charts. You have guys like Jeffrey Steel, one of the top five country songwriters of all time at BMI, and Bud Lee who wrote the number one country song of all time, ‘Friends in Low Places,’” said Preston. “These are the cream of the crop.”
It’s a million megawatt lineup thanks to the way that the Nashville songwriter community has embraced Hilton Head Island. And the way that the town has responded in kind.
“I think the community has really gotten behind it,” said Preston. “The involvement from the Rec Center and the team coming out of Leadership Hilton Head has been invaluable. There are a lot of events on the island throughout the year, and I think this free event the town puts on for the community is a great thing. I feel like locals see it as a celebration of surviving the summer crowds.”
The Island Jam Songwriter Festival runs from September 18-21. The full itinerary was still being firmed up as Taste of Hilton Head was going to press. Visit hiltonheadislandjam.com to learn more.

Pleasure
The 15th Annual Italian Heritage Festival
BY ALLYSON JONES
With grape stomping and pizza eating contests, Roman Legion reenactors and Big Band music, traditional Italian foods and wine, a famous silent auction, children’s activities and a variety of vendors, the Old Country returns to the Lowcountry on Saturday, October 18, during the 15th Annual Italian Heritage Festival.
This robust celebration of Italian culture and heritage hosted by the Italian-American Club of Hilton Head (IACHH) takes place at the Coastal Discovery Museum at Honey Horn from 11 a.m.- 4 p.m.
Look for volunteers offering homemade cannolis, zeppolis, fried raviolis, French fries and Italian sfogliatelle for sale set up alongside booths featuring signature specialties from local and regional restaurants, including cheeses, breads, pasta, fish, meatballs, sausage and calzones, as well as sweet treats such as Italian ice,
gelato and biscotti.
The estimated 3,000 attendees can also shop assorted non-food vendors or bid in the famed silent auction with its selection of golf, restaurant, cruise and spa gift certificates, plus gift baskets and a wide range of crafts, gifts and artwork.
The 24-piece Hilton Head Big Band brings their high-energy performance of hit songs from the 60’s to the present day while Legio XIIII Gemina Martia Victrix recreates the equipment, routines and the experiences of Roman Legionaries from the First Century A.D. Rumor is the re-enactors may even bring an original catapult to this year’s event.
Even the kids will enjoy some fun in the sun with ventriloquist, puppeteer and humorist Mr. Puppet, inflatables, contests and the Beaufort County Library Book Mobile.
A non-profit service organization for those of Italian descent, those married to an Italian or who are simply “Italian at heart” and committed to helping those less fortunate, the IACHH’s mission is to promote Italian heritage and culture while raising and distributing funds for local scholarships and charities.
According to long-time IACHH President John DeCecco (a.k.a. “Johnny D”), nobody really knows exactly when the local ItalianAmerican Club began since the old timers are no longer around.
“When I ask questions, what I get is 1993, 1995…it’s all over the place,” explains the Providence, Rhode Island native. “They were just a social club – a bunch of guys would get together and eat at a restaurant once a week, have social events like barbecues – it was a small group.”
The IACHH incorporated in 2010, around the time DeCecco took over as president, and membership has grown from 70 to about 180 men and women currently. While the club still meets weekly for lunch and monthly for social events, there are now numerous opportunities to volunteer and give back to the community.
In addition to the Italian Heritage Festival, the organization hosts an annual Bocce Tournament, an Italian Sunday Dinner and the Zin Experience (“ZinFest”) Wine Gala. Proceeds from these events funded nine $2,000 college scholarships and the annual John Calamari Humanitarian award, as well as generating charitable contributions to dozens of local non-profits over the years.
In 1989, Congress proclaimed October as Italian-American Heritage Month to commemorate the contributions of Italian immigrants and their descendants in the United States. Former South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley took it a step further in 2015 and declared this proclamation –supported by DeCecco and the IACHH – as state law.
Originally held in September, the Hilton Head Italian Heritage Festival was moved to October after Hurricane Matthew in 2016, joining the club’s ZinFest which also takes place during Italian-American Heritage Month. The IACHH is currently working with the Hilton Head Wine & Food Festival to update and expand the wine offerings at this annual wine gala and no details about the event were available at press time.
Another club accomplishment was establishing Verona, Italy, as Hilton Head Island’s Sister City in 2019. Thanks to this pact, Italian exchange students visit the area annually – and recently took part in the Roman Legion’s re-enactment in Savannah’s Forsyth Park. This year, Hilton Head Preparatory School continues the tradition with plans to send 18 students to Verona.
“It’s just a magnificent thing. We’re keeping the culture alive,” DeCecco declares. “And it hasn’t been easy, believe me – being Italian down here in the South! This club has really, really grown and become part of the community. It’s really a team effort and it’s what we wanted.”
The Hilton Head Italian Heritage Festival takes place, rain or shine, on Saturday, October 18, at the Coastal Discovery Museum at Honey Horn from 11 a.m.–4 p.m. Tickets are $8 per person; free for children under 10. Parking is free. For details on the festival or the Italian-American Club, visit iachh.org.

Recover From SUMMER
BY CHRISTY BARONI • PHOTO BY ROB KAUFMAN
Summer is all about sunshine, cookouts, boat days and indulgent travels and treats. Honestly, that’s part of the magic, right? But if you’re entering Fall feeling a little sluggish, bloated, or off-routine, you’re not alone. Maybe you’ve spent weeks traveling or just had a few too many ice cream nights, getting back on track with nutrition doesn’t have to feel overwhelming. Or like a setback. It’s summer, you spent it well! Now let’s get your wellness routine back to optimal.
We can reset without guilt and ease back into habits that support your energy and your mood.
1 - Reflect, Don’t Regret
First things first: drop the guilt. Summer is for living—and food is part of that joy. Instead of beating yourself up over what you ate or didn’t do, take a few minutes to reflect.
• How do you feel right now?
• What do you miss about your usual routine?
• What’s one thing that made you feel good over the summer?
Remember: health is a long game. One season doesn’t define your journey.
2 - Reset Your Environment
Out of sight, out of mind… and out of mouth! The first step to rebooting your nutrition is setting yourself up at home.
• Clear the pantry and fridge of expired snacks, sugary extras, or leftover vacation temptations.
• Restock smartly: Focus on fresh fruits and veggies, whole grains (like brown rice or oats), lean proteins (chicken, tofu, eggs), and healthy fats (avocados, nuts, olive oil).
• Simplify meals: Start with two or three easy recipes you know and enjoy—like sheet pan dinners or smoothie bowls. Go back to basics. What recipes have you enjoyed in the past that keep you on track? Stock up on those first. Plan meals around what’s in season right now. Think juicy tomatoes, sweet corn, and zucchini.
3 - Hydration Matters
Summer isn’t the only time to prioritize hydration. One of the easiest ways to feel better fast? Drink more water.
During vacation, it’s easy to swap water for cocktails, soda, or a delicious iced coffee. Getting back to hydration basics can help reduce bloating, improve digestion, and even curb sugar cravings. A rule of thumb is to get half your body weight in
ounces each day, spread out evenly between your wake-up time and ending before dinner. This sets you for uninterrupted sleep.
4 - Rebuild Your Routine
After days or weeks without structure, your body craves rhythm.
• Start with breakfast. A protein-rich meal in the morning stabilizes blood sugar and sets positive tone.
• Space out meals consistently. Avoid skipping meals, which can lead to energy crashes and overeating later.
• Get back to sleep basics. Rest and nutrition are deeply linked—less sleep often means more cravings.
5- Set a Short-Term Goal
One of the best ways to feel back on track is to give yourself a small win.
Try one of these:
• “I’ll cook at home for 3 nights this week.”
• “I’ll drink 8 glasses of water every day.”
• “No takeout until the weekend.”
Pair it with a reward: new recipe tools, a walk with a friend, or a fresh playlist. And keep track of how you feel—more energy, clearer skin, better mood? That’s your progress. Celebrate those wins along the way.
You don’t need a cleanse. You don’t need a detox. You just need your next balanced meal. What’s the next right choice? Choose it, enjoy it, and move on. Give yourself grace, keep it simple, and remember: wellness isn’t about perfection. It’s about rhythm, routine, and how you feel in your own skin.

A LIGHT IN THE NIGHT
The Hilton Head Lantern Parade has quickly become one of the island’s most beloved events.
BY BARRY KAUFMAN • PHOTOS PROVIDED
There are some events that you’ll always find in the b-roll of images that seek to define Hilton Head Island. The crack of the cannon marking the start of Heritage. The sleek shine of sunlight on classic chrome during the Concours d’Elegance. The sunset sight of Gregg Russell playing for families beneath the Liberty Oak. And, in recent years, the ethereal sight of luminous lanterns, floating their way through the air above Coligny Beach.
“We started the Lantern Parade in 2019 and it’s really become a popular event,” said Natalie Harvey, Director of Cultural Affairs. She knows that like few others. That first event became that rarest of watershed events, instantly weaving itself into our town’s cultural fabric as an instant classic. Harvey took the job, which partially involves running the parade, two weeks before its second installment.
Center’s jumbotron in Lowcountry Celebration Park. That way a lot of young families with strollers wouldn’t have to traipse down the beach,” she said. “We had food trucks, beer and wine, and Groove Town Assault. But the time the parade finished at the park I couldn’t believe how many people would be there.”
It’s easy to understand the appeal. With the beach often the darkest spot on the island, owing to the protections in place for sea turtles, these glowing works of art in a kaleidoscopic array of sea creatures, birds and abstract forms all seem to float through the ether, held aloft by the entire community. Adding to the excitement, Harvey has been able to bring in musical groups to walk with the parade, like the Atlanta Drum Academy who will return this year.
It’s safe to say that the event didn’t miss a beat, quickly building on its first-year explosive popularity with a slew of new events.
“It grew so quickly, by the third year we worked with the Beaufort County Channel to livestream the parade to the Rec
“That was a great experience for these youngsters to come down and do a parade on the beach, and it added such a great element to the parade,” said Harvey. “They were a group who had performed on ‘America’s Got Talent,’ and they work a lot with Chantell Rytter.”
Rytter, a multisensory artist based out of Atlanta, has been
bringing the lantern parade to Hilton Head Island every year since it started. It’s one of a handful that she and her “Krewe of Grateful Gluttons” put on around the country, inspired by her time in New Orleans.
“I’d lived in New Orleans for about 10 years. We’d had parades in Baltimore where I grew up, but the parades in New Orleans blew my mind. I didn’t know you could do that,” she said. Mardi Gras is obviously the gold standard of New Orleans parades, but the culture around it goes much deeper, with “krewes” putting their own spin on the artform. “The Krewes see parades as a gift to their city. They do wonderful things for a community, joyfully inhabiting public spaces and moving people. It just connects people to a place. It’s an artform that’s really old, but not thought of as an artform.”
The community has embraced this new artform, with lantern making being added to local school curriculum and pop-up lantern making workshops dotting the island, inside and outside the gates, in the weeks ahead.
“ There have been so many organizations hosting their own workshops. We held one for Rotary last year, and Pockets Full of Sunshine did one for a mini-parade at the Crescendo kickoff to build excitement for the parade,” said Hefter. “And we’ve been providing lantern making materials to the schools so even if kids can’t participate they have the experience of being creative.”
They also get to be a part of something that has brought the community together in ways that even the organizers didn’t expect. “It just lets you see members of your community as playful bodies of light,” said Rytter. “Even if it’s just for an hour or
two, it illuminates the threads of commonality between us.”
Of course, that transcendent experience comes at a price.
Somewhat infamously, the overwhelming popularity of the event has taxed the south end’s ability to absorb extra traffic. But organizers are very aware, and are working to alleviate the crush.
“We’re working closely with the traffic safety folks at the town, which has seemed to help,” she said. “But if the weather is 75 and sunny, expect a crowd. I think people who have attended it in the past know that the best way to enjoy the lantern parade is to go down early and enjoy the afternoon by the beach.”
So get there early and prepare to join the community in lighting up the night. The Lantern Parade will be held November 22 starting around 5:30. Visit culturehhi.org to learn more.
