TasCOSS Election 2021 – CANDIDATE STATEMENTS
BROWN, Kathy – Individual Member Candidate for the position of Member who is holding an Individual Membership During my career, I have held senior government executive positions in the Commonwealth Department of Health and Queensland Health and bring extensive understanding of the Australian health system and highly developed skill sets across advocacy, performance, strategy, system planning, financial and risk judgement, corporate governance, influencing skills, health service design and delivery, collaboration and partnering. I also worked as Deputy Director of QCOSS and Deputy Director of Queensland Council of Carers. Through my broad experience and understanding, I have developed great knowledge and understanding of overarching systems of care as they operate across the social, community and health services programme areas, including primary health, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health, rural health, drug and alcohol, mental health, suicide prevention, NDIS, housing, environmental health and aged care. My appreciation for Tasmania fuelled a permanent move last year. I can make a significant contribution in Tasmania as a Board Director at TasCOSS.
HUGHES, Ann – Individual Member Candidate for the position of Member who is holding an Individual Membership I have had a long involvement with TasCOSS, as staff, volunteer and board member and am a Life Member. I am a qualified social worker (and an editor) and have been a worker, volunteer, manager and board member with a wide range of organisations and community groups. I am also engaged with arts and environment causes. Groups I have been active in include the Social Action and Research Centre at Anglicare, COTA, Tasmanian Aboriginal Centre, refugee support and advocacy, Red Cross MATES, Oxfam, the Law Reform Institute Board and Friends of Palestine. I’ve also been a teacher of community studies and social work students. I am particularly committed to advocacy for social justice and believe that TasCOSS has a key role to play in ensuring that wider social issues are brought to public attention, and the voices of less powerful people and areas are amplified.
SUMAR, Sajini – Individual Member Candidate for the position of Member who is holding and Individual Membership Founding member and chairperson of Multicultural Women’s Council of Tasmania. I am Sajini Sumar migrated, 30 years ago with my husband Dr. Sumar and 3 children. I have held various board positions in Local, State and national organisations but not limited. As a migrant nurse I have faced and experienced issues such as inclusion & discrimination in various areas of life in Tasmania mainly health, disability, women’s equal community participation and equal job opportunities, for mainly migrant women as well as wider members of disadvantaged members of Tasmanian community. I am passionate to help and support people in need, also make awareness of the issues and lobby to the Government and decision makers to make positive and equal benefit for all the members of the Tasmanian Community.
