Enrolment note In 2023, there are 1080 students enrolled at Trinity Anglican School, across both White Rock Campus and Kewarra Beach Campus. There are 51 students enrolled at TAS Kewarra Beach ELC and 60 students enrolled at TAS White Rock ELC.

They say life doesn’t begin until 40, which is very exciting for the TAS community – no doubt our best days are still ahead of us! 2023 signals our 40th anniversary and sees the school going from strength-to-strength. Our 40-year birthday celebrations included Trinity Day, the TAS Gala Ball:80’s rewind, and a series of community events in Term 4 across both campuses to mark the milestone. It was wonderful to welcome back a number of old TAS friends, in particular, the founder of TAS, Mrs Naomi Wilson and her children, Ben Wilson Jr and Jenny Wilson. WELCOME TO THE 2023 TRINITAS As I reflect on the year that was, I am struck by the resilience and positivity of our community. Your ability to weather pandemics, economic headwinds, and a constantly evolving society, with wisdom and common sense, provides our students with a wonderful foundation with which to learn and grow. The character of our students continues to impress and our culture reflects the core values we strive to align with. Of course, it wouldn’t be a year at TAS without some remarkable achievements... From a large number of service projects, finishing 8th in the State for (primary and secondary) mathematics teams competition, receiving prestigious Australian Education Excellence Awards for ‘Best Independent Secondary School’ and ‘Best Co-curricular Program’, winning a 5-star National Innovation award, and being accreditation as a National SchoolAid School by the Governor General of Australia, we may be an outer-regional

In 2023, we saw the retirement of Chairman of the TAS Board, Mr Jason Fowler, who has led the School Board with distinction for 12 years. We were able to honour and thank him for his selfless commitment and dedication to Trinity Anglican School at the Secondary Awards Ceremony. GLIMPSE OF 2023 Jan In January, we welcomed new and returning TAS families to a new school year with the annual Principal’s Welcome Evening.
FEB The class of 2013 for their 10 year school reunion.

During February, Year 4 and Year 12 students enjoyed their Outdoor Education programs, while Year 7 & 12 students gathered for the annual disco.
MAR In March, TAS hosted the first round of the Interschool Chess Championships, while Year 12 students celebrated their progress with the first Senior Dinner.
APR In the lead up to the end of Term 1 and the school holidays, students gathered for ANZAC Day ceremonies, Easter hat parades and cyber safety workshops.

Term 2 began with a flurry of events, including Mother’s Day, Science Week, Interhouse Competitions and the Year 12 Senior Dinner. Most importantly, we celebrated our 40th anniversary with Trinity Day.
JUN Term 2 wraped up with Round 2 of the Interschool Chess Championship, KBCP Charities Fair, Grease the Musical and the long-awaited Year 12 Formal.

In July, our community gathered for various NAIDOC Week celebrations, Interhouse Competitions and a beautiful Smoking Ceremony at the White Rock ELC. In August, we celebrated creative endeavours with the annual TAS goes M.A.D festival and Variety Night. In addition to Book Week, the third Interhouse Chess Championship and the Ponytail Project.

SEPT Term 3 concluded with Mock Exams for our Year 12 students, firesafety lessons for our Prep students and community events to celebrate Father’s Day.

MARCH A motion was put to Synod, which was supported by the Diocesan School Board. FORWARD PLANNING COMMITTEE MEMBERS Chaired by Archdeacon Tung-Yep, and included Reverend Sandy Marshall, Ben Wilson, Naomi Wilson, Dr Digby Hoyal and Pam Hill. TAS COCONUT CARNIVAL The first tme the Coconut Carnival was introduced as a P&F Fundraiser.
MAY A local forward planning committee was established. SEPTEMBER A concept plan was drawn up and the Diocese engaged architects. NOVEMBER An Advisory Committee responsible to the Church Schools’ Board was established with Kevin Burry as Chairman, Bishop John Lewis as President, and included Ben Wilson, Naomi Wilson, Rev Canon A.N. Marshall, Mr I Millyard, Dr Digby Hoyal, Archdeacon Tung-Yep and Mrs E. Stephenson.
JANUARY The opening service was held on the current site of the Bishop Centre. FEBRUARY The first Board FOUNDING BOARD meeting was held.
MEMBERS Naomi Wilson, Peter Cominos, Noel Cannon, Digby Hoyal, and Jeff Pezzutti. Ex-officio members were the Bishop of North Queensland, the Diocesan Registrar, and Archdeacon Bishop Tung-Yep.
THE FIRST YEARBOOK In 1985, the first school yearbook was released, originally named TrAnScribe.
MAY TAS was officially opened on 28 May, by Daphne Davis, a major financial supporter of the school.
SCHOLARSHIPS & BURSARIES The School Council introduced a number of Scholarships for students entering Year 8 and Year 11. The Parents’ and Friends’ Association also introduced a bursary available to children who would otherwise not financially be able to attend.

OCTOBER Trinity Anglican School was the vision of a local Cairns couple, Ben and Naomi Wilson.
JANUARY The School Council was elected, and Ben Wilson named Inaugural President.
THIRD PRINCIPAL Ted Hook stepped down as Principal. He was succeeded by The Right Reverend Ian Stuart.
After years of research and consultation with other parents, Naomi Wilson approached Bishop John Lewis about the possibility of the Diocese constructing and operating an Anglican High School in Cairns. NOVEMBER This proposal was warmly received and at Bishop John Lewis’ request, Naomi wrote a proposal, which was presented to the Anglican Church.

MARCH An Appeal was launched under the joint Chairmanship of Peter Cominos and Noel Cannon, and the current White Rock site was purchased. NOVEMBER The school began to take shape. The Hon. David Thompson MP, and Dr Digby Hoyal laid and dedicated the Foundation Stone. Stage 1 was completed, including A Block and the Bishop Centre.

2023 ASCENSION CROSS The school received a donation of the Ascension Cross, that is today standing near the Progress Road school entrance.
CAPITAL WORKS Major capital works commenced across both campuses. At White Rock campus, Stage 5 neared completion, including Primary classrooms, a library and extension of the covered area. At Kewarra Beach campus, Stage 1 classrooms were well underway in preparation for occupancy in January 1991.
STAGE 4 DEVELOPMENT Stage 4 development commenced at White Rock campus, comprising the Creative Arts Centre and purpose-designed areas for art, music, speech and drama. COAT-OF-ARMS The School Council commissioned artist Mr Stan Moses, to design the TAS coatof-arms.
Named after James Venture Mulligan, Mulligan house represents curiosity and pursuit.
TECHNICAL STUDIES The first cohort of students who participated in technical studies lessons graduated.
HERE COMES MULLIGAN Increased enrolments resulted in the introduction of Mulligan House Colour: Red. Symbol: Originally, the symbol for Mulligan was Mullet. This has since changed to Mustang.
BEGINNINGS AND ENDINGS While fashion may have changed, TAS traditions still hold strong. In 1990, Year 12 students still participated in Formal and the Leadership Camp.

CAPITAL WORKS At Kewarra Beach campus, considerable growth took place, including many new classrooms and the campus offered education to Year 3 for the first time. LEARNING SUPPORT The school established a learning support program available to all students. OSHC The school introduced an after school care program.

969 STUDENTS OVALS AT KEWARRA In the lead up to summer, the Kewarra Beach campus installed water coolers and a plan was approved to build a sports oval. OLD SCHOLARS RUGBY The first annual old scholars rugby union match was held at the White Rock campus oval.

YEARS 3–12 For the first time, Trinity Anglican School offered education for students from Year 3–Year 12.
JOHN LEWIS CENTRE The John Lewis Centre for Creative and Performing Arts was opened on Trinity Sunday, by Professor Warren Bebbington, the Dean of Music Faculty at the University of Queensland.
PRIMARY CAMPUSES OPEN TAS Kewarra Beach campus and White Rock Primary campus were officially opened by Sir William Knox, President of the Association of Independent Schools of Queensland. Kewarra Beach welcomed foundation students in Prep, Year 1 and Year 5. Kewarra Beach campus introduced two house groups unique to the campus, named Palmerston and Morrell. PALMERSTON Colour: Blue Symbol: Marlin MORRELL Colour: Maroon Symbol: Gecko KEWARRA BEACH LIBRARY The Kewarra Beach campus Library and Administration building were completed and opened to students.
STAGES 2 & 3 On Trinity Sunday, Sir Joh Bjelke Petersen officially opened Stages 2 and 3 of the White Rock Campus, including the manual arts facilities, a gymnasium, the library resource centre, and Principal’s residence. 700 STUDENTS LITTLE BUDDIES TAS introduced the Buddy Program as the first iteration of the Pastoral Care Program. KEWARRA BEACH An Appeal was launched to build a campus in the northern beaches. The current Kewarra Beach site was purchased with plans to open in 1991. YEAR 12 FORMAL The Year 12 formal looked a little different! Check out the hair, gowns, and suits.

BISHOP CENTRE Construction commenced on the assembly hall to become the Bishop Centre. NEW UNIFORM New school uniforms were introduced.

TUNG-YEP LIBRARY The Kewarra Beach campus Library was officially named Tung-Yep Library to honour the contribution and generosity of the Tung-Yep Family to the Cairns community and Trinity Anglican School.
ADMINISTRATION BUILD The new White Rock Secondary Administration building was completed. KEWARRA BEACH Construction on the Kewarra Beach campus B Block and covered area extension was completed and officially opened.

929 STUDENTS SECONDARY The decision was made that White Rock campus will be the only TAS campus to offer secondary education. BISHOP CENTRE The Bishop Centre for Performing Arts was officially opened by Naomi Wilson and dedicated by the Right Reverend CM Wood, Bishop of North Queensland. STUDENT ACCOMMODATION TAS off-campus student accommodation centre opened in Woree.

WHITE ROCK CHAPEL Former classrooms in A Block were converted into a Chapel to allow students and families more worship opportunities. The Chapel was dedicated by Bishop Lewis on 21 April 1994. KEWARRA BEACH EXPANDS Increased demand for classes at Kewarra Beach campus resulted in an extension, including 2 new classrooms, a computer laboratory and general learning area. The additions were essential to accommodate a class at every year level from Prep–Year 10.

CHAPEL OF ST PETER The Kewarra Beach Chapel of St Peter was blessed and dedicated by The Right Reverend John Lewis.

ROUND SQUARE MEMBER TAS became a full member of the Round Square.
TAS CAN! Following a visit from from US public and private schools, TAS received a personal letter from Bill Gates, CEO and Chairman of Microsoft, who was inspired by our can-do attitude.

TAS GALA EVENING For the first time, TAS introduced new events showcasing talents from the music, art and drama faculties, including the TAS Gala Evening and TAS Cabaret.

CELEBRATING 25-YEARS The TAS community celebrated its 25year anniversary with Trinity Day, the Coconut Carnival, and a special fireworks display.

CELEBRATING 30 YEARS In 2013, TAS celebrated a massive 30-year anniversary milestone.

BLOCK M As part of ongoing building improvements, White Rock primary campus M Block was completed.
SAWPIT GULLY PROJECT Students, staff, parents and community members gathered to plant thousands of trees in the Sawpit Gully Revegetation Project.
ROUND SQUARE Secondary students participated in a Cambodian service project, building a shelter for disadvantaged women and donating 180 bicycles to local children.
BASKETBALL COURT The Basketball Court at Kewarra Beach campus officially opened in November by MP Mr Jim Turnour. The Cairns Taipans basketball team attended to play against students on the new courts.
The TAS Aquatic Centre underwent maintenance, being drained and repaved.

OUTDOOR EDUCATION The Outdoor Education Program was named the winner for the award of Outstanding Achievement by the Queensland Outdoor Recreation Federation (QORF).

JANUARY At White Rock campus, a new main school entry was completed, via Sheehy Road. At Kewarra Beach campus, the Cairns Regional Council completed a new roundabout at the border of the school grounds. STEM CENTRE OPEN 700 guests attended the official opening of the TAS STEM Centre in August. The $6.1 million building borrows its unique design from the DNA double helix and took 12 months to complete. The building was made possible with funding from the Queensland Government and contributions by TAS families.

As the pages of this academic year come to a close, it’s only fitting to take a moment to reflect on this journey filled with rich and rewarding experiences. This year marked not only my inaugural year but also a deep dive into a new community and culture. It has been a year of immersion, a baptism of fire that has brought challenges and triumphs. A LOOK BACK ON 2023... Getting to know TAS secondary students has been a privilege. Each is a unique individual, demonstrating their strengths and every achievement, big or small, has contributed to the rich narrative of White Rock Secondary. The emphasis on tradition at TAS binds the community together. The warmth and welcome embedded in the culture of TAS have made it easy for me to call this place home. It is a culture that embraces diversity, encourages curiosity, and fosters an environment where every individual is celebrated for who they are. Looking ahead, I am inspired and committed to preserving and nurturing the TAS culture. year in review from the head of kewarra beach primary This year, KBCP was thrilled to receive a National School Aid Award and Accreditation Certificate from the Governor General, Mr David Hurley. The award acknowledges the efforts of students, families, and staff, as well as the wider local community for their fundraising efforts through Charities Fair and Round Square Service projects. FLASHBACK IN TIME
YOUNG ARTISTS
Straight lines, rows of desks, ink and chalk were the order of the day, as Year 2 stepped back in time to conclude their HASS studies and end the school year in ‘the olden days’. Students and teachers dressed in yesteryear clothing and lessons covered the Three R’s (Reading, Writing and Arithmetic), technical drawing for boys and sewing for girls. Students also shared homemade butter cake for morning tea before playing traditional games outdoors.
KBCP’s young artists proudly exhibited their work at the 2023 KBCP Art Show which celebrated another successful year of student art creation. Featuring original and imaginative Prep to Year 6 art pieces created during Art classes and Art Lounge workshops, the show coincided with the K – 2 Christmas and Years 3 to 6 Awards Assemblies which highlighted performances and achievements by choirs, ensembles, class groups and individual students.

We wish our families a safe and happy Christmas break. It has been a terrific year and one that has produced many rewards for our community. I would like to thank the staff for another excellent year, and I’m excited what next year will bring. We truly have a remarkable community. WRCP IN REVIEW For the second year in a row TAS White Rock Campus Primary has been included in the prestigious 5-Star Innovative School list. It was awarded for the innovation shown in teaching and learning. Hundreds of thousands of students from all around the world, which includes more than 20 countries including Australia, New Zealand, Hong Kong, India, Malaysia, Singapore, South Africa, and the United States sit ICAS (The International Competitions and Assessment for Schools) annually across the schoolbased competition’s six subject areas. Congratulations to all our WRCP students that sat the
ICAS competition. We have had some outstanding results. We were awarded 2 medals, 5 High Distinctions and 17 Distinctions. 2023 saw the return of our sister school exchange with the Keimei Gakuen Elementary School from Tokyo. It was a terrific exchange, and it was pleasing to see the reestablishment of the relationship between TAS and sister school. Thank you, again, to the families who opened their homes to students. There is a trip a trip to Tokyo for our students in 2024, and 25 WRCP students will be flying over for a homestay experience with the Keimei school.

Congratulations to both Kewarra Beach and White Rock Campus Primary teams who competed at the Da Vinci Decathlon in Brisbane. The White Rock team finished third in two categories (Mathematics, Coding), while the Kewarra Beach team won the Humanities section. This is a wonderful result, competing against the leading schools in Queensland.
Petitioning Against Animal Cruelty Congratulations to Noah Solomon and Holly Finch (Year 8), who have launched a petition advocating against animal cruelty. In just over a week, it garnered over 500 signatures! They are campaigning for the implementation of additional legislation by developed countries to put a stop to animal suffering.

NYSF Showcase dinner Congratulations to Brandon Spuler (Year 12) for speaking at the Rotary Club Cairns Trinity and NYSF Showcase Dinner. Brandon delivered a presentation to a diverse audience consisting of local School Principals and Science teachers, sharing his experience and aiming to inspire other young STEM students to seize this incredible opportunity.
JCU Science and Engineering Challenge (SEC) Year 10 students participated in The Science and Engineering Challenge (SEC), which was hosted at JCU and provided hands-on experience in various aspects of science and engineering at a tertiary level. TAS students took part in bridge building, designing a Mars Rover, and developing model airplanes.
TAS secondary students were among 50 from the FNQ region selected to attend the JCU Heroes in Health event at the Cairns Hospital. Students experienced various careers in health, including medicine, nursing, and midwifery, dentistry, pathology, and other allied health careers such as occupational therapy, physiotherapy, and speech pathology. A range of speakers from different professions attended, and students enjoyed connecting with likeminded peers.
HMAS CAIRNS SCHOOLS Congratulations to our TAS Year 12 Engineering team, who won first place in the HMAS Cairns Schools Engineering Challenge 2023! Our winning team of Campbell Osmond, William Bennetts, Travis Drinnan, Mary Blee, Elliot Smyth, Robin Grace, and Harrison Mollenhauer competed in four different challenges, including robotics, boat-building, water pipe repair, and building a makeshift radio. Congratulations to Celia Pramana (Year 4), who earned a high distinction in five categories and received two coveted Spelling and Digital Technology medals at the 2023 International Competitions and Assessment for Schools (ICAS) competition. The ICAS competition assesses hundreds of thousands of students from 41 countries, who compete annually for medals across the school-based competition’s six subject areas. To receive a medal, not only did Celia have to achieve the highest score in both Spelling and Digital Technology subjects in her year level across the region, but her results also had to be deemed sufficiently worthy when compared to other regions of the world. Congratulations to TAS Year 3 teacher, Mr David Long who has been named FNQ Teacher of the Year by the Cairns Post. For three decades, David has been educating young minds as a TAS primary teacher. He is a pillar of the TAS community, a dedicated TAS Hockey coach and runs the very successful TAS Chess program. This award is a wellearned recognition of his remarkable dedication! CERTIFICATE 2 AIRCRAFT LINE MAINTENANCE Congratulations to Taylah Steinhofer (Year 12), who recently graduated as DUX of her Certificate 2 Aircraft Line Maintenance class. This achievement comes after 18 months of theoretical and practical study. Taylah is now one step closer to her goal of being a jet pilot in the Royal Australian Air Force. Well done Taylah!

TAS Mathematicians Shine We’re thrilled to share the fantastic results of our TAS students who participated in the Australian Mathematics Competition (AMC). A total of 91 TAS students from Years 4 to 11 took on the challenge, and we’re incredibly proud to announce that 23 of them achieved Distinctions, placing them in the top 20% of participants Australia-wide. But that’s not all! Three remarkable students secured High Distinctions, ranking among the top 3% Nationally! The Business Liason Association (BLA) Annual Aspire Awards aim to provide incentives and opportunities for secondary students in various curriculum areas. A panel of industry professionals judges student applications, and applicants sometimes participate in interviews. The BLA has offered awards since 1993, and today, students in Far North Qld are uniquely placed to take advantage of these excellent opportunities and further their career pathways as they exit Year 12. Young Mayors Program During Term 4, 3 civic-minded students, Lana Kadakji (Year 8), Noah Solomon (Year 8) and Antonije Dimitrijevic (Year 10), campaigned for a seat on Cairns’ first democratically elected Youth Council. The Young Mayors program is a joint initiative of the Cairns City Council and the Foundation for Young Australians and is designed to promote democratic processes and youth participation in the region. Students aged 11–18 gathered to cast their votes in a realistic local election process, and it was wonderful to see the engagement. Special congratulations to Lana and Antonije, who were successful in their elections and will serve 18 months on the council.

By Jessica Barker & Myles Britton, Mulligan Captains Our time as 2023 Mulligan Captains has been challenging, inspiring, exciting and very rewarding. During our Year 12 Retreat, we engaged in House bonding and set the scene for the year ahead. We recognised the importance of vocalising to the House and new Mustangs that participating and trying your best is success itself, regardless of the outcome.
We finished the year on a high, as the mighty Mustangs fought hard to win the singing competition for the second year in a row. Performing, “Don’t Stop Me Now”, the Mustangs were unstoppable. Seeing our close-knit House (family) work together made us very proud, as did seeing the Year 11 leaders step up Mulligan is in safe hands next year.
In line with our House motto - ‘Victory Through Unity’ – we set out to be the most united and spirited House. We faced our first interhouse event of the year, the swim carnival. Although it was nerve racking having to step up as captains for the first time, the carnival ran smoothly, and we were proud of the House for participating to the best of their ability. The House’s efforts in preparing for the cheering competition were rewarded with a solid result.
As the school year ends, we celebrate the remarkable achievements and memorable moments that have defined our Kennedy House journey. Students have showcased their talents and tenacity in various competitions. Throughout it all, Kennedy students have exemplified bravery, passion, and unity. As we bid farewell to our senior crocodiles, we express our gratitude for their exceptional leadership and guidance. We are so grateful to be blessed with such an amazing family of support from both students and staff, but none of it would have been possible without the mightiest of leaders, Mr Haseldine. The man who consistently shows up, encourages us to achieve our goals. Mulligan House can achieve anything. GO MUSTANGS! This year was a great one for Kennedy and we have enjoyed being your Captains. The beginning of the year kicked off with House Day, students across year levels got the opportunity to reconnect and we welcomed our Year 7’s to the Kennedy family. It was lovely to see the encouragement, especially at Trinity Day when even those not competing were cheering, which undoubtedly helped Kennedy win the Dash overall. Through Launchpad Day and the Year 7 & 12 social we were able to get to know our Year 7’s. It was an amazing experience to be able to help them with their transition and become a dependable, friendly face for daily interactions. Witnessing the bravery of the Year 7’s as they tackled their first debate competition was admirable.The collective success of all the Year 7/8 teams was a proud moment for Kennedy. As the year ends, we want to express our gratitude to the entire Kennedy House for making this year truly awesome. Best of luck to everyone at Kennedy next year – you’re in great hands. By Sarah Warren, Dalrymple Head of House (Acting) A distinctive characteristic of Dalrymple students is their unwavering commitment to stepping beyond their comfort zones and embracing new challenges. This ethos was evident in our participation in interhouse sporting events, showcasing determination and sportsmanship. From the challenging triathlon to the endurance-testing cross-country, the thrill of athletics, and the splash of the swimming carnival, Dalrymple House stood out not only for its competitive spirit and passionate cheers, but also by fostering a strong sense of unity and camaraderie. The articulate expressions in public speaking and debating showcased the depth of critical thinking, while the vibrant performance in the singing competition showcased cohesiveness that makes our House truly exceptional. As we congratulate our students for a successful year and recognise that success is not just measured in victories but in the individual and collective growth achieved. National Triathlon Representative
Congratulations to Daniel Statton (Year 11) and Sean O’Reilly (Year 11), who have been selected for the Queensland Regional 17 & U Men’s Netball team, participating in the Australian Men’s & Mixed Netball Championships in Perth in April. Daniel was named the AMMNA Men’s 17 & U MVP and Men’s 17 & U All-Star 7. Daniel has also received an invitation to the AMMNA 17 & U squad trials.
Congratulations to Luke Swindale (Year 8), who represented the Peninsula district at the Queensland School Sport Triathlon State Championships and was selected in the Queensland team to compete at the National Championships. Luke finished 15th at the 2023 National Championships in Devonport, Tasmania. Luke adjusted well to the cool conditions to achieve this outstanding result at his first national triathlon championship.

Alex Jenkins - Marathon Congratulations to Alex Jenkins (Year 8) for his outstanding performance in the Brisbane Marathon (2km) earlier this term! He placed 2nd in his age group and an impressive 11th out of 177 participants. Fantastic effort, Alex!
State Table Tennis Player of the Year Congratulations to Adeepa Keerthiratne (Year 9), who was named the 2022 Queensland Junior Table Tennis Player of the Year. He also secured 3 gold, 2 silver, and 2 bronze medals at the Queensland Junior Table Tennis Championships. Adeepa has earned the opportunity to represent Queensland at the 2023 National Table Tennis Championships in Sydney.

TAS AQUATIC CENTRE REFLECTING ON OUR HISTORY Since it’s construction in 2000, the TAS Aquatic Centre has forged a legacy for driving and developing athletes of all ages. Over the years, we have welcomed incredibly talented coaches and swimmers whose passion and dedication are the driving force behind the strength of our programs. Today, the centre thrives from the dedication of Alberto Lantieri - Head Coach, Doug Telford - Assistant Coach and Dionne Cotrel - Aquatic Centre Coordinator. In previous years, we have had many talented and passionate Head Coaches and Swimming Directors on deck, including Adam Luscombe, Andrew (Herbie) Howard, Michael Ursu, Morgan Knabe and Duncan Todd. We thank these incredible coaches of national and international calibre, of whom have developed our powerhouse of swimmers.
THE AQUATIC CENTRE IN 2000 TAS Swimming members have been selected into the Swimming Australia Flippers, Junior Australian Swim Team, Queensland State Team, Swimming Queensland Flippers, Swimming Queensland Silver and Bronze teams and Swimming Queensland Youth Development Teams. More recently, swimmers have been selected to compete
at Olympic Trials (Ella Goddard, Ike Martinez and Lauren Morris) and International Events such as the World Aquatics Junior Championships and the Junior Pan Pacific Championships (Ike Martinez) who also currently holds a National Record for the fastest 13-yearold to swim a 200m Butterfly in Australia.

OUR LEARN-TO-SWIM PROGRAMS CONTINUE TO GO FROM STRENGTHTO-STRENGTH IN 2023, WITH SWIMMERS PROGRESSING THROUGH LEVELS AND MOVING INTO SQUAD PROGRAMS.
Congratulations to Albert An (Year 11) for the 2023 World Championship Trials and State Team Member for the 2023 Tilly Cup. Albert also broke the 17 years & over 50m Freestyle record with his time of 25.85 seconds, as well as his 17 years & over 50m Breaststroke time of 31.77 seconds. Congratulations to Joanna Chen (Year 10), who was selected to represent Papua New Guinea (PNG) in the Youth Commonwealth Games in Trinidad and Tobago and the 2023 Pacific Games in Solomon Islands. TAS Aquatic Centre was named 3rd overall Club in FNQ Short Couse Championships and five more AgeChampions.
Our team of instructors are dedicated to developing our SwimKids knowledge, building coordination, consistency, and confidence to prepare for the next step in their swimming journey. Learning to swim builds fundamental skills to excel; from gross and fine motor function, hand-eye coordination, proprioception, balance, and cross patterning, It develops danger recognition and promotes awareness around water-scenarios. Our Learn-to-Swim program is fun and develops self-confidence and self-belief. Swimming improves stamina, strength, flexibility, balance, and posture, all whilst promoting a healthy body and lifestyle.

2023 has been a whirlwind of excitement, challenges, and unwavering dedication from both staff and students, showcasing their curiosity and perseverance in their academic endeavours. Reflecting on our journey over the past year, it is inspiring to see how our school community has navigated these times with dedication and spirit. The announcement of Australian Curriculum version 9 marked a significant shift in our educational approach, and we thank secondary teaching staff who have prepared new assessment plans for implementation in 2024. A notable development this year has been the rise of generative artificial intelligence which brings exciting possibilities that we are focused on harnessing for the comprehensive guidance on its responsible use. Our Year 12 cohort of 2023 has demonstrated exceptional dedication, culminating in their impressive performance in external assessments. At the time of writing, the feeling of accomplishment among these students
is palpable, and the anticipated ATAR results are a testament to their hard work and determination. I extend my heartfelt congratulations to all Year 12 students and encourage them to continue making a positive impact in their future endeavours. To the Academic Captains; Amber, Georgia and Rose – thank you for all your effort during the year – you have been fantastic! The high level of academic effort and results from students at TAS continues to impress. Despite their active involvement in extracurricular activities, they remain determined to make the most of their schooling, constantly pushing themselves to achieve the best they can.
In addition to their academic achievements, our students have excelled in external benchmarks like NAPLAN and competitions such as the BLA Awards, ICAS, and the Australian Mathematics Competition. These successes highlight the diverse talents and capabilities of our students and our commitment to fostering a well-rounded education. As this year comes to a close, we reflect on our achievements with pride and look forward to the opportunities and challenges of the new year. Our commitment to providing an enriching and challenging educational environment remains steadfast, and we are excited to see what our students and staff will achieve in the future.
Breakfast with the Qld Chief Scientist JCU Science and Engineering Challenge We were invited to attend ‘Breakfast with the Qld Chief Scientist’ - Professor Bronwyn Harch at Crystalbrook Riley and were treated to some amazing presentations from innovative local scientists and businesspeople. Jennifer Monger, Shivansh Pranay and Lily Edwards were particularly inspired by Krista Watkins whose company makes a positive environmental impact producing flour from tonnes of waste banana skins.

The Year 10 STEM extension class were highly competitive in meeting the challenges provided in the JCU Science and Engineering Challenge held early in term 2.
RACI NATIONAL TITRATION COMPETITION Fine performances by our Year 11 and 12 Chemistry students saw them reach the Final of the RACI National titration competition. Anastasiya Kyslytsya, Larah Turnbull, Albert An, Rebecca Robinson, Amber Robinson and Daisy Colbridge all represented TAS with merit. The winning titration team on the day was Ana, Albert and Larah who went on compete in the National Competition. Larah and Daisy achieved individual High Distinctions and Albert was awarded individual competency. Thanks to Mrs Malcolm for the many TAS Times dedicated to helping students practice their skills.

visual arts - primary KBCP Another HUGE year for Art at KBCP! To start off 2023, the Year 6 cohort entered the Young Archie Awards in Sydney, and although we had no winners this year the cohort did themselves proud with their wonderful portraits and self-portraits. Our annual Chinese New Year Art In The Courtyard display was all ready to go, but wet weather had other ideas so we delayed until the Easter Hat Parade

and had a double whammy - The Year of Finally in Term 4, Christmas was all the the Rabbit translated perfectly to Easter go with Christmas in the Courtyard and festivities and our display of banners, beautiful folk-art style decorations made giant carrots and sock bunnies were a by Prep to Year 4 hanging all around the special thrill for the littlies and Mums and grounds. MUSIC AND ART COLLABORATION 3 students had their dynamic designs fixed onto ukuleles for display. THE WRCP CONCERT We were thrilled to invite TAS Community members to performances by Choirs, Ukuleles, Strings Ensembles and soloists.

KBCP CLASSROOM HIGHLIGHTS There were many highlights in music this year at KBCP. Toward the end of the year, Prep students were establishing the foundations of music, while Year 6 students used their musical knowledge to compose a group song/ rap for a local cause in the community with composed instrumental accompaniments. For Year 5, the highlight, as always, was the STOMP group compositions using everyday objects – from well-coordinated basketball sequences with multiple ostinatos to kitchen and pool scenes with a variety of contrasting sounds. Year 4 creatively composed and performed their own soundtracks for animated shorts and Year 3 drew a Songline inspired by the Rainbow Serpent which they then composed and performed a soundscape to go with. At the K-Year 2 Presentation, students sang and danced to a variety of songs to celebrate Christmas and the end of a wonderful year. Our amazing ukulele group continues to advance and grow in numbers, with many accomplished players. I’m so looking forward to what 2024 has in store! 51

This event featured soloists performing in the art display area plus all of the WRCS ensembles who had an opportunity to present several items of popular music in the Bishop Centre. TAS Rock Bands all had their turn to perform from the stage of the Bishop Centre and the event once again was a great celebration of the many talents of TAS musicians. In the wider community TAS Rock Bands represented the school in the Relay for life and in the American
DRAMA - SECONDARY As the curtain closes on another eventful year, we look back at some of the exciting, successful, and entertaining experiences in the Drama classroom for 2023. New to the subject, the Year 7 cohort were introduced to the world of performance by twisting well-known Fairy Tales and characters, while the Year 8, 9, and 10 students were exposed to different styles of theatre, as their confidence and knowledge grows. In the spotlight was the opportunity to share laughter and onstage adventures with primary students, as the Year 9/10 class explored Children’s Theatre as a form of entertainment – and what a beautiful way to strengthen the connection between our big and little kids. Our seniors maintained TAS Trinitas
Car Club Charity Car Show. Term 4 saw the WRCP Ensembles and soloists perform in a very successful Assembly concert. It was great to see students enjoying the experience of presenting music to their friends and classmates. All of the major awards ceremonies and assemblies at the end of the term featured TAS Ensembles who confidently presented the performance items they had been preparing for these key school occasions.

MUSIC - choral 2023 TAS STUDENTS HAD WONDERFUL OPPORTUNITIES TO SING AND PERFORM MRS ANNA LONG, VOCAL/CHORAL COORDINATOR The year began with Grease rehearsals leading to a fantastic production (directed by Shannon Saunders) featuring many solo and ensemble singers!
The newly formed Year 6-10 Vocal Ensemble with Instrumentalists led the Year 5-12 Christmas Service with beautiful spirits, harmonies and timbres.
The KBCP P-2 Songbirds also performed delightfully this year, at both the Christmas Markets and their Music Recital.
The WRCP P-2 Choir thrilled classmates and families singing ‘When I grow Up” and “Cover me in sunshine” at the WRCP Concerts and Mother’s Day Breakfast. A particularly special moment was when the audience joined in the singing as they performed with the 3-6 Choir and Ukuleles. A special thank you to Sohryeon Bae for her piano accompaniment.

In Term 3, it was exciting to see the WRCS House Singing Competition and Performance group “Waving through the window” with the dance troupe wowing everyone at TAS Goes M.A.D.
The KBCP Senior Choir started their year singing for Harmony Day and performing a heart-felt rendition of “Lest We Forget” (conducted by Eva Horn), at the ANZAC Day Dawn Service. Their performance energy during their Music Recital led them to win 2 first place trophies in the Folk Chorus and Novelty Chorus at the Eisteddfod. Their lovely singing also helped to celebrate Christmas at the KBCP Markets and Awards Assembly. Singing “Sweet Caroline” and “I Have a Dream” connected choir members from both KBCP and WRCP whilst many young soloists experienced stardom, microphones and smoke machines as they sang on stage at Variety Night.
Finally, the WRCP 3-6 Choir sang at two WRCP Concerts, also entering the Eisteddfod Junior Chief Chorus + Sacred Chorus, they won two 2nd place medals. The songs “Eye of the Needle”, “Christmas Wish’ and “Carol of the Bells” soon became their favourite songs which they performed at their Award Celebrations. A

O U TDOOR EDU C AT ION Darren Osmond, Director of Outdoor Education The 40th birthday of TAS also marks 40 years of the TAS Outdoor Education Program. Programs began utilising external providers and have developed into the modern programs we enjoy today. In 2023 we conducted 15 different year-level programs (Years 1-12 inclusive), a 5-day Duke of Edinburgh Expedition and 24 days of practical activities for the Year 10 Outdoor Recreation Program, including two 4-day

We have also developed considerable resources and facilities in 2023, with an Outdoor Education precinct currently under development and due to be operational in 2024. Thanks to the generous sponsorship support of Dr Sarah Coll Orthopaedic Surgeon, we have a wonderful new base / logistics off-road trailer with all the trimmings to assist in our program delivery. Our outdoor education staff team is developing and growing and we will welcome Mike Barker on board as a full-time outdoor education facilitator in 2024 (although Mike has been at the school for 12 years in many related roles). We look forward to welcoming a gap student from England in the first half of 2024 also.
As we look towards 2024, 22 students in Years 9 and 10 have signed up for a 22-day World Challenge Expedition to Nepal, to be held in December. These students will hike for 8 days in the Himalayas, do a week of community service in a school near Kathmandu, along with other cultural emersion and sightseeing activities. 55

OUTDOOR EDUCATION
year 9 oe program 16 October–3 November, 2023 Camp Barrabadeen, Lake Tinaroo This rite-of-passage program consolidates personal responsibility and outdoor skills learnt on programs from Years 1-8 inclusive, while introducing cooking techniques, sailing and various ropes activities. Students enjoyed a four-day hike and canoe expedition, two days of sailing, the giant swing, abseiling, orienteering, environmental community service, a six-hour solo activity and much more. Parents report observing many major positive changes and visible growth in their children, which correlates with the main program aims. Many students commented about making new friendships and connections, and on learning how to get along with and work collaboratively with others for an extended period of time. year 10 OUTDOOR ED PROGRAM 11–14 July, 2023 Students chose from sailing on a tall ship from Cairns to Townsville, canoeing on Koombooloomba Dam and hiking in the Davies Creek National Park.
Concluding our secondary school journeybased/expedition programs, the Year 10 Outdoor Education program allows students the autonomy to choose their preferred expedition. For the latter two expeditions, students took charge of planning and preparing their own food. Unfavorable weather conditions, including persistent rain during the canoe expedition and strong winds for the sailing expedition, added an extra layer of challenge this year. Gratitude is extended to the parents and staff who generously dedicated their time to enhance the outcomes of this program, and special thanks are given to South Passage for providing the sailing experience. 3–5 May, 2023 at Northern Outlook Training Facility Students enjoyed the vertical artificial caving activity and spending time with their peers. It was wonderful to see students develop leadership and collaboration skills. Heads of House attended the program to work with their students and see their skills and qualities outside of the normal school environment. Congratulations to all students for their efforts and resilience. Thank you to the parents and staff who generously gave their time to enrich the outcomes of this program. Special thanks to the team from the Northern Outlook for providing the wonderful venue.

The Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award program In 2023, there are more than 80 TAS students registered Edinburgh Adventurous Journeys. KEVIN AROUND CAMPUS TERM 1
This year’s school wellbeing programs focused on resilience, body positivity, emotional regulation, and coping skills. In the secondary school, Year 9 addressed body issues through a Body Positivity presentation and engaged in activities to enhance coping skills before an Outdoor Education Program. Year 12 had a pre-HSC wellbeing presentation for healthy study habits and coping skills.

TERM 2
Students had access to individual counseling, and Animal Assisted Therapy was provided by Kevin, a beloved staff member. A sensory safari program was conducted at White Rock Primary Campus, promoting sensory modulation and mindfulness. Mental health-related books were added to the library, along with guided meditation sessions. At Kewarra Beach, readiness for Prep event was successful, teaching parents skills to support independent and confident learning. Kevin participated in Book Week, reading socially impactful stories to primary students.

TERM 3
Canine safety talks were delivered to primary classes, integrating social cue recognition strategies. Wellbeing activities, resources, and online mental health support were provided for both primary and secondary schools. Plans for a parent wellbeing hub are underway. A student decompression lounge for secondary students is set to be completed in term 1, 2024, marking an exciting development in the wellbeing space. In collaboration with the Outdoor Education team, we developed several useful wellbeing tools and reflection activities, which were incorporated in this years Outdoor Education program and student journals. Reports from students, families and staff indicate that these activities and resources were helpful to build upon students existing coping strategies that will serve students well as they

TUNG-YEP LIBRARY 2023
2023 was another busy year in the Tung Yep Library at Kewarra Beach, with events and celebrations running throughout the year. This year our library also hosted the National Simultaneous Storytime, Science Week, a Bookfair, and the CBCA Book Week. Students also participated in the Premier’s Reading Challenge and the Reader’s Cup. A highlight of the year was our annual Book Week celebrations, with our biggest parade ever and an outdoor Story Walk. Always popular were our lunchtime activities and clubs with many busy hands creating, coding, building, and exploring. Weekly library lessons for Kindergarten to Year Six students helped embed the curriculum and a love of reading! To finish the year, students participated in an outdoor Where’s Wally Hunt. What a wonderful, productive, happy year we have had in our library!

THE FAR NORTH QUEENSLAND INTERSCHOOL CHESS TOURNAMENTS WERE HELD IN THE BISHOP CENTRE TERMS 1, 2 AND 3 AND TRINITY ANGLICAN SCHOOL HAD TEAMS IN ALL DIVISIONS ENJOYING INCREDIBLE SUCCESS. CHESS CONTINUES TO GROW IN POPULARITY AS THE INTELLECTUAL AND SOCIAL BENEFITS ARE SIGNIFICANT. TAS WRCP Team Zhou and TAS WRS Team Adeepa were FNQ Champions for 2023! At the Queensland Girls State Finals held, in Brisbane, the TAS Girls Chess teams were Regional Champions in both Primary and Secondary Divisions. The girls WRCP 2 team placed second in A Division. At the Queensland Interschool Open State Finals, TAS chess players had an awesome tournament and were announced Regional Champions in the Primary Division. Raiyaan Baig won a Regional Board Prize. GIRLS STATE PLAYERS WRCP 1: Tiarne Kim, Lilian Zhang, Scarlett Twomey and Zara Lee. WRCP 2: Ava Nguyen, Sienna Edwards, Amy Harvie and Celia Pramana. PONYTAIL PROJECT 2023
HAIR WE ARE TO ROCK THE CHOP CONGRATULATIONS TO OUR 2023 PONYTAIL PROJECT TEAM, WHO HAVE RAISED AN INCREDIBLE $29,000 FOR THE QUEENSLAND CANCER COUNCIL – A TESTAMENT TO THE POWER OF COMMUNITY AND PURPOSE.

Student fundraising efforts culminated in their hair being cut for donation to sustainable salons, where it will be repurposed into wigs for those suffering from cancer. In the past four years, TAS students have raised over $60,000 for the Ponytail Project. We cannot be more proud of all 18 participants who have found time outside of their senior studies to lead endless bake sales, barbecues, and raffles. Their fundraising has surpassed all expectations, thanks to the unwavering support of local businesses and the school community.

COINS FOR CHARITY WRCP celebrated Round Square’s annual “Coins for Charity Day” on Friday, March 10, raising funds for their sponsored child, Charity, through World Vision. Students and staff donated gold and silver coins, raising over $1230! Congratulations to Prep J for raising the most amount of money.
Joining forces to fight hunger! Last year, we were honored to receive an invitation to participate in the Eat Up Program. With more than 1 in 5 Australian children experiencing food insecurity, Eat Up is dedicated to nourishing hungry kids, empowering them to grow, learn, and thrive. As part of their Round Square service project, our dedicated group of student volunteers gathers weekly to prepare up to 1250 sandwiches. Once the sandwiches are ready, Eat Up takes charge, delivering these fresh and nutritious goodies along with healthy snacks to local schools. The Eat Up initiative was initiated in 2013 when its founder, Lyndon, became aware of local children attending school without lunch. With the support of his mother and a few friends, he began making sandwiches to provide to these schools. Over the past seven years, Eat Up has grown to become Australia’s primary organisation providing free lunches to students nationwide. Together, we are making a difference, one sandwich at a time!

INTEGRATED FAMILY AND YOUTH SERVICE ADMINISTRATION AWARDS Congratulations to Amelia Stewart and Ellie Richardson (Year 7), who received a letter and certificates of appreciation for their generous donation of books to the Integrated Family and Youth Service Administration (IFYS) as part of their Primary Round Square Gold Award project. The girls conducted an awareness campaign and book drive in 2022, receiving new and high-quality books from the White Rock Campus Primary community. IFYS gratefully received their donation, which had a positive impact on the lives of young people in foster care.

In celebration of Harmony Day, the Round Square Committee ran an orange themed food stall. Orange frozies, jelly and fairy bread proved popular.
ROUND SQUARE SLEEP OUT The Round Square Captains organised a sleepout to highlight the societal problem of homelessness. Throughout the night, a range of thought-provoking activities took place, prompting discussions and raising over $1,000 for Backpack Bed for Homeless Australia.
ROUND SQUARE GOLD AWARD Congratulations to Alexander Roll (Year 6), who completed his Round Square Gold Award project and donated 259 cleaning products to Shelter Housing Action Cairns (SHAC). Alexander has been raising awareness of the homeless situation in Cairns and gathering donations from the WRCP and wider community. SHAC’s mission is to help people in need, and Alexander’s collection will make a huge difference to families in Cairns - it will enable them to clean their homes and stay in safe, supported accommodation for an entire year. WRCP Round Square Committee led TAS students and parent helpers to Giangurra (Bessie Point) along the Yarrabah road to participate in a beach clean-up with Tangaroa Blue, where they collected 66.5kg of rubbish! Tangaroa Blue is a non-profit organization dedicated to removing and preventing marine debris. Students also heard about the significance of caring for our environment from the Rangers at the Djunbunji Land and Sea program before sorting the collected rubbish. Sorting the rubbish enables Tangaroa Blue to identify the source and engage the community in reducing rubbish before it enters our oceans.

As part of their Round Square service project, Year 6 students Tiarne Kim and Kritika Biswas met with the Queensland State President of the St. Vincent de Paul’s Society, Mr Dennis Innes, and Youth Engagement Officer, Jamie Wanders to donate over 200 toiletry items that they had collected with the help of the TAS community.

VALENTINES DAY FUNDRAISING The wildly enthusiastic 2023 Round Square Captains hit the ground running with a highly successful Valentines Day to start off their fundraising activities this year. The WRCS campus was full of positive feelings, with deliveries of valentines, chocolates, and serenades, all in celebration of love and friendship. What a happy buzz it generated.

Hambledon House Food Pantry Tutor challenge The 3rd annual Hambledon House Food Pantry Tutor challenge drew enormous support from tutor groups this year. It was won by MJRO who received the perpetual trophy and a pizza party for their efforts and generosity. Over two carloads of food were donated over the two-week collection period this year – our biggest effort yet and a great reflection of the importance of the Service IDEAL to members of our TAS community.
The Round Square exchange program returned in earnest this year with several year 8 and 9 students heading out to Ballarat Grammar in Victoria, Radford College in Canberra, and Ivanhoe Grammar in Melbourne. Poppy Lauchlan (Year 8) enjoyed a two-week exchange to Ballarat Grammar School in October. “During my time on a Round Square exchange to Ballarat Grammar School, I had the opportunity to meet fantastic people and learn how my host family lived their lives. I also learned many new things about myself.” Lachlan Clews also enjoyed an exchange experience at Ballarat Grammar School.
rosie’s friends on the street Rosie’s – Friends on the Street continues to be a major Service project, with many Year 11 and 12 students volunteering for outreach evenings this year. We welcomed Ashna, Alexis, Calista and Jade from St. Clement’s School in Toronto, Canada this year. They stayed with us for four weeks and had a fabulous time in FNQ. We farewelled Ava, Claire, Frances and Monique late in November as they headed to Toronto for their return exchange. An excited group of Canadians waited at the airport to meet our girls at the end of their long journey. We wish them well!

WRCP Community Carnival One of the highlights of the year was the WRCP community carnival. The numbers that attended were outstanding. In a terrific atmosphere of fun and enjoyment our community came together to celebrate all we do at TAS WRCP. Events like this take lots of pre planning behind the scenes and then lots of hard work on the day. DON’T CRY BECAUSE IT’S OVER, SMILE BECAUSE IT HAPPENED By Myuri Gopalapillai & Rebecca Robinson Hey, Graduating Class of 2023 - wow, that certainly has a ring to it! It’s hard to believe that our 13-year voyage through the wild seas of school is finally ending. Say it to yourselves and let that sink in…13 years of schooling finished. You, dear graduates, have journeyed through the highs and lows of academic and schooling life, and even though the teachers may find us as a pain most of the time, we couldn’t have asked for better people to spend our journey with. It has truly been a blast and as your captains we have cherished the experiences we’ve had together. Congratulations on the immense hard work and perseverance you’ve shown through this difficult but very memorable year. It still hasn’t quite sunk in that our shared adventure is fast approaching the final chapter. It feels like just yesterday we were navigating the intimidating waters of Prep, finishing our last day of Year 6, readying ourselves to embark on the three week Year 9 Outdoor Education program. And yet, here we are. Remember that no matter where you end up in life, the friends, teachers and TAS community will forever be a part of who you are. So, hold onto these connections for they are the true treasures you’ve gained on this educational journey. Through all the difficult times, the late-night study sessions, the stress of exams and assignments or the endless drama, it’s fair to say that we would have all at some point us wished that Year 12 would come to an early end. Yet, now, as we approach our last days, we realize that every high and low has made this journey truly remarkable.
