A Note of Gratitude

This year’s Annual Report is less about what we’ve built together and more about what was made possible because of it. It’s about people. How we move through our days, how we care for one another, and how trails quietly support the moments that shape our lives.

Every mile of trail exists because of collective action and stewardship. Because of neighbors who show up, partners who collaborate, volunteers who give their time, donors who believe in the long view, and community members who understand that access, safety, and connection matter. I’m deeply grateful for each of you because you turn vision into reality and make these trails places of belonging, not just passage.

Trails are often where life unfolds. They’re places of healing and play, of courage and discipline, of community and discovery. They help children gain confidence, families come together, and individuals find clarity during times of change. They remind us that movement is powerful.

The stories that follow reflect this truth. They are personal and honest, and they show the many ways people find their way on our extraordinary trail network. Taken together, they reflect a shared vision for our region: one rooted in care for each other, for the land, and for the future we’re building side by side.

Finding Our Way

Every day, people use trails to heal, to play, to travel safely, to feel a sense of belonging. They are quiet infrastructure for human experience—welcoming, steady, and always there when we need them.

Trails are where we move through change, sometimes slowly, sometimes with purpose, sometimes just trying to breathe.

They offer space when life feels heavy, safety when we’re finding our footing, and joy in moments we didn’t plan for. On these paths, we reconnect to ourselves, to each other, and to the places we call home.

This work is made possible by a community that cares deeply for one another and for the land beneath our feet. It’s shaped by shared stewardship, collective vision, and countless small acts of care.

The stories that follow are just a few examples of how people find their way, together, forward, one step at a time.

HEALTH + HEALING

Elaine is a devoted trail user who found solace, strength, and forward motion on the trails during a season of profound loss. What began as a place to move and breathe became a steady partner in healing and ultimately, a reason to give back.

My life was forever altered when I lost my mom, Melaine, in 2020, two weeks before the world itself was reshaped. I call that chapter my after, the moment I had to find a new way to live, and to survive what felt unsurvivable.

Grieving in a world locked down, with two children under five at home, brought an unexpected kind of heaviness. I knew that my way through would be movement and fresh air, forward motion when everything else felt still and unfamiliar.

In the months following her death, we temporarily moved to Northern Michigan to heal and I set my sights on running a marathon in her honor. Turning forty, the first major milestone she would miss, felt like the right year to chase something that once seemed impossible. Loss, I learned, carries its own strange strength. When you survive the hardest thing, you discover a resilience you didn’t know you had, because sometimes, we just have no choice.

New to the region and deep in grief, I found the TART Trails. Over the next two years, they became my healing ground.

Hour after hour on those quiet paths—just me, my thoughts, the ache of missing her (and a little arthritis brewing)—gave me space to breathe, to remember, and slowly, to discover how to move forward. I truly believe those trails helped carry me through some of my darkest days.

The landscape, the safe ground beneath me, and the calm all around offered a sense of security and peace. Out there, there was no noise, no distraction. Just her, and the new version of me I was becoming without her.

86% of surveyed local trail users report improved physical and mental well-being due to trail use.1

There were countless moments, in rain, cold, and brutal heat, that belong only to her and I—moments where I relived our best memories and pushed my body through the anger of loss.

Eventually, we chose to make Northern Michigan our permanent home. Access to our precious trails played a tremendous role in that decision for our family.

Today, the miles feel lighter, and the ground doesn’t need to carry as much of my burden. But I will forever feel connected to those trails and grateful for the role they played in my survival—a beautiful, quiet partner on this impossible journey.

SAFETY + FREEDOM

Jason has spent years running, riding, and raising his family on the trails as part of everyday life. Alongside his wife, Arianne, an ultrarunning duo who spend countless hours on the trail, they’ve raised their two kids where movement, confidence, and independence naturally take root.

One experience that really stands out for our family happened this past summer during the Tour de TART event. Instead of driving to the start and taking the shuttle back, which is how most people do the event, my son Tyler wanted to ride the entire round trip from our home in Traverse City to Suttons Bay and back, about 40 miles total. That was a goal he came up with on his own.

What struck me was how manageable the ride felt. Using trails and trail connections almost the entire way, including the new TART Bayfront segment, we were able to ride along the bay without worrying about traffic or tight road conditions. That waterfront stretch made a noticeable difference. It filled in a missing link and turned the ride into something that felt continuous and comfortable.

For Tyler, the ride was a big confidence boost. Choosing to do the full distance and then following through showed him what was possible when safe connections exist. He was navigating, pacing himself, and realizing he could get around the region on his bike without relying on a car. That confidence has stuck with him since.

From a parent’s perspective, the peace of mind mattered just as much. The trail network made it easy to support his goal without feeling like safety was a constant concern. Looking ahead, we are excited about extending the TART Bayfront trail toward Eastern Avenue, which would further connect neighborhoods and schools and give kids more safe options to get around while avoiding unsafe traffic.

JOY + PLAY

When Noah moved to Traverse City a few years ago, the trail became a place of discovery and imagination. Through art, movement, and play, it helped him feel at home and showed him that wonder can be found just around the corner.

I remember when I first moved to Traverse City and was biking to Oryana. I saw the red and yellow sculptures. They reminded me of a sculpture garden I loved going to where I used to live. I jumped off my bike and ran over to explore them. It made me feel like Traverse City could really be my home and there could always be something interesting around the corner. I love how many different types of art are displayed on the TART Trail.

I also remember learning about the artists who painted the murals on the Boardman Lake loop. I heard that some of them were younger artists with different backgrounds. While I biked around the lake with my family, I imagined what I might paint if I created my own mural. It was so inspiring knowing that not only can everyone be an artist, but that your work could be installed somewhere where it could change someone’s day and help them to dream.

CONNECTION + BELONGING

Marcia found her community on the trails through volunteering, shared rides, and friendships formed mile by mile. What started as a way to stay active became a deeply rooted sense of belonging and purpose.

From my perspective, I feel a strong sense of belonging and connection to the extended TART Trails family. I moved to Traverse City, a community full of interlacing trails, in 2017. Since 1978, I raised my family in the Elk Rapids area, worked with the school system, and enjoyed life there. I knew, upon retirement, I would need novel adventures and opportunities for volunteerism in a community of like-minded active adults who care deeply for the environment. I found it here in Traverse City. I live within the Grand Traverse Commons, a vibrant neighborhood that fosters a lovely community of thoughtful and intentional people. It was the perfect place to land.

Soon after moving here, I started volunteering for the Bayshore Marathon, Zombie Run, Tour de Tart, Winter Trails Day, and other TART Trails events. I quickly found my dynamic community. Wanting to participate in these events as well, I purchased an e-bike, which allows me to keep up with family and friends, remain active, and embrace the trails that surround me. From my door, I can be on the Leelanau Trail

or the Boardman Lake Loop Trail in minutes. One of my favorite things in the summer is riding the Leelanau Trail to Suttons Bay with friends, enjoying lunch, shopping, and then jumping back on my bike and heading home on a safe and beautiful trail system.

Tour de Tart, in July, brings my Ohio family to the area for a few days, crowned by our fun local bike event. Our family group grows each year, now with friends joining in for the event. It is a grand family reunion with cherry pie à la mode at the finish line. Now there’s a sweet connection.

This summer, I look forward to riding the Sleeping Bear Heritage Trail and, if I am lucky, an overnight in Glen Haven. Our friends from years ago had the foresight to preserve this beautiful area for us all to enjoy. We can now access the beautiful National Lakeshore on bikes, boots, and skis through an integrated trail system. I am grateful to belong to this magnificent family that is TART Trails.

A large study found that older adults who volunteered about 15 hours a week saw improvements in memory, mobility, and strength, and research shows volunteers tend to live longer overall.8
