Halloween at Davidson Field. If you look in the stands tonight and see a miniature Spider-Man… that’s Zach, Katie and my 3-and-a-half-year-old son. Happy Halloween, everyone. Like Spider-Man gets from time to time… we’re a little “banged up” with some key injuries as we close out our regular season with Edison tonight. I am proud to report that after a very strong start, we still hold a strong 7-2 record going into tonight’s game. The coaches and I are pleased with our players’ effort this year. I also expect tonight NOT to be our last game and that we’ll get a chance to heal up a bit before our first playoff game. Our student section TARPIT continues to inspire. The players are so thankful for their follow students, and all of the parents and community that support the program. Being at Davidson Field is always an advantage for our team because of the great support. Tonight, we need the TARPIT again. We’re at the tail end of what we’ve dubbed as the “threegame gauntlet” of the Sunset League juggernauts. Los Alamitos (two weeks ago), CdM (last week) and finally, Edison (tonight). All strong programs and all Division 3 contenders. Our opponent tonight (Edison Chargers) bring a strong record of their own at 6-3 and they are also ranked No. 8 in CIF-Southern Section Division 3. The Sunset league is still very tight with CdM leading at 4-0, while Edison and Los Alamitos are both in second (3-1) and Harbor (2-2) at .500 is firmly in 4th place. Huntington Beach and Fountain Valley are both winless. Those that remember last year remember that we were winless in Sunset League play last year… so that’s progress, indeed. All of this has sure made for a fun year so far; but I assure you that we won’t be resting our laurels tonight. We’ll be working on things tonight to help us get ready for the playoffs. Thank you, again, for coming out to support the program. Finally, last year we started a tradition at Newport Harbor High School football games. Home or away. Win, lose or draw. Our players and cheer and band will sing the alma mater. Make sure you stay until the end of each game for this moment of camaraderie. In case you’re not sure of the words, here is a study guide: “Hail, our Alma Mater, to her grey and blue; We give her love and honor for her spirit’s true. (it’s true) Our loyalty to Harbor High ever will our standard be. We’ll fight for the night, so hail Harbor High!” I’d like to, again, thank Principal Boulton and the administration, teachers and booster club for taking such an interest in the football program. THE ESSENCE OF COACH LOFTHOUSE’S “5 F’S” PHILOSOPHY Getting a few minutes with Coach Peter Lofthouse is easier than you might think. After spending more than eight years at the JUCO ranks, including a historic season at San Diego’s Mesa College where in three short years the program went from 3-7 to 9-2 and won its first bowl game in over 30 years, Coach Lofthouse has settled into Newport Harbor High School and is our 2nd year head football coach. “Anytime someone wants to talk about what we’re trying to accomplish at Newport Harbor,” Coach Lofthouse says, “I’m Interested.” Coach Lofthouse believes that the game of football, at the high school level, is a teaching tool and an opportunity to change the lives of young men through experience. It’s a unique opportunity for teenagers to not only learn values that work on the football field, but any athletic field… and more importantly, values that they can instill into their lives well beyond their high school years. These values are called “The 5 F’s” and it’s instilled in EVERYTHING we do. FAITH Faith in yourself. Faith in your teammates. Faith in your coaches. BUY IN to what we’re doing on this football team. FAMILY Protecting your immediate family (e.g. Mom, Dad, siblings, relatives) as well including your teammates as your family. FRIENDS Aligning with buddies that have high morals and good character. Friends (and teammates) that hold each other accountable for their actions. FOOTBALL Having fun and playing hard and playing to the best of your ability. FINISH Finishing everything you start. Whether it be homework, a test or “playing until the whistle” – give it your best effort.

A HUGE “Thank You” to those that have given in the past (and continue to give, both time and money) in support of all these neighborhood kids that love to play football for Newport Harbor. The program simply would not be possible without the generosity of the Newport Beach community. So, knowing who we are, what we’re trying to accomplish, here’s the easiest way you can help:

Dear Everyone: It’s an honor to be “one of many” that serve Coach Lofthouse, Principal Boulton, and Athletic Director Murray as the Football Booster Club President. Looking back on Coach Lofthouse’s first year (2018) the story was, “Many more kids are playing football, and Davidson Field was full of fans on Friday night.” As we play our final regular season game tonight, I wonder, “What will the story be this year?” We don’t quite know, yet, but we’re starting to find out. I do know that with a solid 7-2 record going into our final Sunset League game, go ahead… it’s safe to say it: “Tar Football is back!” Way to go, coaches and team… keep up the great work! Tonight the kids will get a test in their third Southern Section Division 3 Rankings opponent in a row in a back-to-back-toback Sunset League gauntlet. We are loving the incremental improvement in the program. As you know, all of this is not possible without proper resources. This is where the booster club finds its purpose… to make sure the program has the necessary resources so the kids

This is NHHS’s 90th year of playing football. As of this writing, Coach Lofthouse and the football staff have our team at 7-2. That’s AN INCREDIBLE ACCOMPLISHMENT and our students and community are loving it. Both our football team and student section (TARPIT) have appeared in the Top 20 (OC Varsity) this year. The 7-2 start is, of course, the easiest metric to cite when someone asks me, “How does the team look this year?” And I must admit, it feels good to say we’ve more than doubled our wins from last year and have a very solid chance at the playoffs. But those who have followed the football program know that there’s much more to it than the record. Since Coach Lofthouse took the reins in the spring of last year, our student-athletes have endured a high-intensity regimen of strength and conditioning. This translates to winning games, but the players’ discipline and strong work habits also transfer to the classroom. I can’t tell you how many teachers have told me that it’s a pleasure to have a football player in their class. In the end, this character building will help our student-athletes develop life-long skills that are so essential for professional success and personal livelihood beyond football. This has, indeed, been our best start in years. I suggest that we, as the Sailor faithful, piggy-back on Coach Lofthouse, the staff, and the players in GIVING OUR BEST on the following fronts: Let’s show OUR BEST RESPECT to the hard work and competitive spirit of our young men and women as they compete—by modeling good sportsmanship and proper decorum at all of our games and events. Let’s offer OUR BEST HOSPITALITY to our neighbors from Edison High School that we host at Davidson Field. We have the most beautiful high school setting in all the land (just look up at the sky at kickoff ). Let’s be thankful for that and make sure everyone feels welcome. Finally, let’s give OUR BEST EFFORT in all things we do as Sailors, whether that be on the field, in the classroom, or around the community. On behalf of Newport Harbor High School, I would like to thank our dedicated student-athletes of football, band, and cheer—along with all the parents and supporters who have devoted their time, effort, and money to our programs. Based on the previous four years, it would be understandable if someone didn’t pick Newport Harbor High’s football team in the preseason to be playing an important Sunset League game in the 2019 regular-season finale. But, sure enough, the Sailors (7-2) are hosting traditional Sunset power Edison tonight at 7 on Halloween night – and hoping for another big crowd with no school on Friday – as the Tars try to continue their historic season, in which they appear to be a lock for the CIF-Southern Section Division 9 playoffs. If the Tars beat the Chargers, they will gain an automatic playoff berth by securing a top-three finish in league. And even if Newport Harbor comes up short, it is expected to receive an atlarge berth in Division 9, in which the Tars were ranked No. 4 last week. Either way, the Sailors, who play in one of the most competitive leagues in Orange County, have returned as a marquee program. “There’s a buzz around campus, around our team and around the community,” Newport Harbor Coach Peter Lofthouse said. “Everybody’s excited about what’s happening, and these three games are like going to the gauntlet with Los Alamitos (Oct. 18), Corona del Mar (last week) and now Edison. Those might be the three toughest games any team in Orange County will face, week in and week out, and we feel very confident that when we get through this game against Edison we will be in a position to be one of the better teams in CIF Division 9. The kids and coaches are excited about a deep playoff run. But we definitely need to stay healthy. We’re pretty banged up right now. We’ll find out this week whether it’s possible for a few guys to be coming back (from injuries), guys who will really benefit our team. Until we’re able to watch them in practice and see what they can do, it will be clear or not clear. Against Corona del Mar, we were missing seven starters, which definitely impacted us. So the key is to be healthy for the first round of the playoffs.” The Sailors, who started the season 7-0 for the first time in 25 years, will have their hands full

Walters, Mateo Liau and Tanner Nelson. “Our defense has been very solid all year,” Lofthouse said. “Right now we’re 7-2, but the thing that’s different with Edison, compared with some other teams we’ve played, is that this is truly one of the top teams in Orange County. They’ve got some dudes on the offensive line and defensive line. They’re very disruptive, big and physical, and they’re able to push you around. For us, we will definitely have to dig deep and try to bring that level of intensity. If we want to win, that’s what we have to do.”

The Chargers (6-3, 3-1 in league) average 5.5 yards per carry on the ground, gaining 1,507 yards on 273 carries, led by Walters, who has 469 rushing yards and 14 touchdowns on 97 attempts. Nelson (328 yards and five touchdowns on 39 carries) and Liau (293 yards on 49 rushes) are also solid ball carriers. Junior Braeden Boyles has emerged as the Chargers’ top quarterback, completing 80 of 143 passes for 1,241 yards and 13 touchdowns with six interceptions. The Sailors are 2-2 in league. O
