THE ESSENCE OF COACH LOFTHOUSE’S “5 F’S” PHILOSOPHY

Back at Davidson Field. Our undefeated season ended last week vs. Los Alamitos. It was a long night for our team. We learned a lot, though, and the lessons we learned hopefully will help us in the remainder of the season, and into the playoffs. Our student section TAR PIT continues to inspire. The players are so thankful for their follow students, and all of the parents and community that support the program. Being at Davidson Field is always an advantage for our team because of the great support. Tonight, we need the TAR PIT more than ever. We’re in the middle of what we’ve dubbed as the “three-game gauntlet” of the Sunset League juggernauts. Los Alamitos (last week), CdM (tonight) and finally, next week we end the season on Halloween night with Edison. Our opponent tonight (The Sea Kings) bring a strong record of their own at 8-0 and they are also ranked No. 1 in CIF-Southern Section Division 3. The Sunset League is very tight with CdM leading at 3-0, while Harbor (7-1) is tied with Los Alamitos and Edison for second place at 2-1 in league. Huntington Beach and Fountain Valley are 0-3 in Sunset action. All of this has sure made for a fun year so far; but I assure you that we won’t be resting our laurels tonight. We’ll be working on things these next two games to get ready for the playoffs. Thank you, again, for coming out to support the program. Finally, last year we started a tradition at Newport Harbor High School football games. Home or away. Win, lose or draw. Our players and cheer and band will sing the alma mater. Make sure you stay until the end of each game for this moment of camaraderie. In case you’re not sure of the words, here is a study guide: “Hail, our Alma Mater, to her grey and blue; We give her love and honor for her spirit’s true. (it’s true) Our loyalty to Harbor High ever will our standard be. We’ll fight for the night, so hail Harbor High!” I’d like to, again, thank Principal Boulton and the administration, teachers and booster club for taking such an interest in the football program. Getting a few minutes with Coach Peter Lofthouse is easier than you might think. After spending more than eight years at the JUCO ranks, including a historic season at San Diego’s Mesa College where in three short years the program went from 3-7 to 9-2 and won its first bowl game in over 30 years, Coach Lofthouse has settled into Newport Harbor High School and is our 2nd year head football coach. “Anytime someone wants to talk about what we’re trying to accomplish at Newport Harbor,” Coach Lofthouse says, “I’m Interested.” Coach Lofthouse believes that the game of football, at the high school level, is a teaching tool and an opportunity to change the lives of young men through experience. It’s a unique opportunity for teenagers to not only learn values that work on the football field, but any athletic field… and more importantly, values that they can instill into their lives well beyond their high school years. These values are called “The 5 F’s” and it’s instilled in EVERYTHING we do. FAITH Faith in yourself. Faith in your teammates. Faith in your coaches. BUY IN to what we’re doing on this football team. FAMILY Protecting your immediate family (e.g. Mom, Dad, siblings, relatives) as well including your teammates as your family. FRIENDS Aligning with buddies that have high morals and good character. Friends (and teammates) that hold each other accountable for their actions. FOOTBALL Having fun and playing hard and playing to the best of your ability. FINISH Finishing everything you start. Whether it be homework, a test or “playing until the whistle” – give it your best effort.

Dear Everyone: It’s an honor to be “one of many” that serve Coach Lofthouse, Principal Boulton, and Athletic Director Murray as the Football Booster Club President. Looking back on Coach Lofthouse’s first year (2018) the story was, “Many more kids are playing football, and Davidson Field was full of fans on Friday night.” What will the story be this year? We don’t quite know, yet, but we’re starting to find out. I do know that with a sharp 7-1 start, go ahead… it’s safe to say it: “Tar Football is back!” Way to go, coaches and team… keep up the great work! Tonight the kids will get a test from their buddies from across the bay who boast a perfect record of their own. I don’t want to bring up hard memories, but those of us that were at the CdM game last year can put in perspective how far Coach Lofthouse has brought this program (in short time). We are loving the incremental improvement in the program. As you know, all of this is not possible without proper resources. This is where the booster club finds its purpose… to make sure the program has the necessary resources so the kids reach their full potential. As if kickoff tonight, the booster club is $30,000 short of making budget. A HUGE “Thank You” to those that have given in the past (and continue to give, both time and money) in support of all these neighborhood kids that love to play football for Newport Harbor. The program simply would not be possible without the generosity of the Newport Beach community. So, knowing who we are, what we’re trying to accomplish, here’s three ideas on how you can help:

1. If you have a business (or know of a business) consider placing an ad in the Tar Football Program. Ads start at

$90.00 (business card size) and go up to $990.00 (full page ad). We have two (2) more home games still this season (Battle of the Bay and Edison), so there’s still time to participate. Visit store.tarfootball.com and click “sponsorships” (or just e-mail me directly) 2. Buy a Christmas Tree from the football program. Check out website for details. We will have awesome trees this year, and you can pick them up from the school 16th street parking lot or have it delivered by a football player for a small extra charge. Pleased make sure your order is in by November 10th. 3. If you know of a restaurant that wants great exposure, encourage them to sponsor a team meal. We can trade a

full-page ad in our program and thank them loudly over the PA system in exchange for a meal for 90 people. We will have at least one playoff game (and hopefully more) that we will need team meals.

This is NHHS’s 90th year of playing football. As of this writing, Coach Lofthouse and the football staff have our team at 7-1. That’s AN INCREDIBLE ACCOMPLISHMENT and our best start since the fall of 1994. The 7-1 start is, of course, the easiest metric to cite when someone asks me, “How does the team look this year?” And I must admit, it feels good to say we’re playing tonight for first place in the Sunset League. But those who have followed the football program know that there’s much more to it than the record. Since Coach Lofthouse took the reins in the spring of last year, our student-athletes have endured a high-intensity regimen of strength and conditioning. This translates to winning games, but the players’ discipline and strong work habits also transfer to the classroom. I can’t tell you how many teachers have told me that it’s a pleasure to have a football player in their class. In the end, this character building will help our student-athletes develop life-long skills that are so essential for professional success and personal livelihood beyond football. This has, indeed, been our best start in years. I suggest that we, as the Sailor faithful, piggy-back on Coach Lofthouse, the staff, and the players in GIVING OUR BEST on the following fronts: Let’s show OUR BEST RESPECT to the hard work and competitive spirit of our young men and women as they compete—by modeling good sportsmanship and proper decorum at all of our games and events. Let’s offer OUR BEST HOSPITALITY to our neighbors from across the bay that we host at Davidson Field. We have the most beautiful high school setting in all the land (just look up at the sky at kickoff ). Let’s be thankful for that and make sure everyone feels welcome. Finally, let’s give OUR BEST EFFORT in all things we do as Sailors, whether that be on the field, in the classroom, or around the community. Local author and Newport Harbor High alum Mark Keys writes and publishes books called “My Best Day,” and while last week’s Sunset League football clash against Los Alamitos High probably would not qualify as a bestseller for Newport Harbor’s Sailors, they are in the hunt for a Sunset championship as they prepare to face visiting Corona del Mar in the biggest Battle of the Bay football game since 1992. The Sea Kings (8-0), ranked No. 1 in CIF-Southern Section Division 3, lead the Sunset League at 3-0, while Harbor (7-1) is tied with Los Alamitos and Edison for second place at 2-1 in league. Huntington Beach and Fountain Valley are 0-3 in Sunset action. The power steam blaster in the student section at Newport Harbor home games is fun to watch and attractions plenty of attention, but the Sailors on the field under second-year Harbor Coach Peter Lofthouse are creating their own fireworks as they enter the 58th Battle of the Bay with an all-time series lead of 38-19. The Battle of the Bay football series is widely viewed as the biggest annual sporting event in Newport-Mesa Unified School District. And, while it is the first Battle of the Bay with the Sunset League title on the line – the teams have mostly played in different leagues – it stands as the most important in 27 years. In what was billed as Battle of the Bay II, Newport Harbor defeated Corona del Mar, 2821, in the 1992 CIF Division 5 semifinals, subjectively ranked as the No. 1 game in Newport gridiron history. It was the only clash in which the Back Bay rivals faced each other a second time in a season. The Sailors’ victory in Battle of the Bay II propelled them to their first CIF championship game in 50 years, in which they lost to Irvine in the CIF final. Until that time, and back in 1942, led by fullback Hal Sheflin, Harbor won its first varsity league championship in the Sunset League and played in the CIF Small-Schools Division title game, the only round of the CIF playoffs.

In an interesting twist, one of the Tars’ most devoted fans in 1942 was a kid from Balboa Island named Mike Giddings, whose hero was Sheflin. Giddings’ family moved from Balboa Island to South Pasadena and he never strapped it on for the Tars, but Giddings later became the head football coach at Newport. Giddings, who will be recognized at tonight’s Battle of the Bay at Davidson Field and supported in attendance by dozens of his former Newport players, coached at Newport Harbor for seven years, four as the varsity coach from 1982 through ’85. In the Giddings era, the Sailors posted a 34-12-3 record (.693 winning percentage), won Sea View League championships in 1983, ’84 and ’85, and advanced in the CIF playoffs to at least the quarterfinals all four years. In 2012, Newport Harbor defeated Corona del Mar, 27-26, for a series-record sixth consecutive time, having won at the time 13 of the last 14 Battle of the Bay football games. But since then the Sea Kings have turned the tide and tied the six-game winning streak as the ultra-rivals clash tonight in the 58th Battle of the Bay. In 2019, the Sailors have enjoyed their first winning season since 2014. They started 7-0 for the first time since 1994. Newport Beach Mayor Pro Tem Will O’Neill will toss a commemorative Battle of the Bay coin at midfield before tonight’s game. O

The football program was struggling at Newport Harbor High when Mike Giddings took over as head coach, and at the time of his hiring it was quite a coup for the Sailors, landing a former professional and collegiate head coach with deep ties to USC and a national championship. While Giddings served only four years as head coach at Newport Harbor, and three years prior as sophomore coach, his legacy is so strong that former Harbor players host reunions in his honor and started a Facebook page to promote one in 2018. “Coach Giddings is one of the most famous and revered football men in the game on all levels,” former Tar assistant coach Seamus Callanan wrote on the page. “Mean and tough, pride and poise,” John Stockham added about Giddings, who admitted he could create the illusion of being furious and intentionally make a face or yell to get a reaction or move a cause on the football field in a way that would benefit his team. In other words, Giddings is smart and savvy. After 1981’s 1-9 record, Giddings stepped in as the new head coach, and the Sailors, with Old Glory on their helmets, returned to prominence and the top of the sports section in the local newspaper. In four glorious years, the Sailors enjoyed a 34-12-3 record, a .693 winning percentage. Harbor captured Sea View League championships in 1983, ’84 and ’85, the latter two shared titles, and advanced in the CIF-Southern Section playoffs to at least the quarterfinals in all four campaigns. From record-setting tailback Steve Brazas to gifted quarterback Shane Foley, the Sailors featured almost larger-than-life talent on offense every season to go along with the type of defense that has come to define what the term Tar Ball represents. “The best player ever I think at Newport was Steve Brazas,” Giddings said. “There had never been an all-around (player) like that. I mean he could do it (on offense or defense as a linebacker). He could play quarterback. He could pass. In fact, I would go shift to a shotgun and put the quarterback out in the slot, and Brazas would be like an old single-wing tailback. He was phenomenal.” Foley, who played at USC after becoming Orange County’s all-time leader with 5,364 passing yards in his three-year career at Newport Harbor, said he loved playing in Giddings’ pro-style offense and watching videos each week of the San Francisco 49ers and Joe Montana. “I was very fortunate to play for Mike Giddings and honored to play on the last team he ever coached,” Foley said. “Coach Giddings and I connected from day one and I still call him my second dad.” After serving in the Marine Corps, Giddings began his

football coaching career at Monrovia, where his team played in a CIF championship game in 1959. After a year as head coach at Glendale College, Giddings was the defensive coordinator under John McKay at USC for five years, including the Trojans’ 1962 national championship. Giddings was the head coach at the University of Utah for two years, then joined the NFL as a coach with the San Francisco 49ers for six years, before accepting an offer he couldn’t refuse – head coach of the Hawaiians in the new professional World Football League, and later also as the general manager. Giddings, who started a pro player evaluation business in 1977, said the best game he ever coached at Newport Harbor was against Saddleback in 1985, when the Tars stunned the heavily favored Roadrunners, 24-21, in a Sea View League showdown in Week 5 as the schools eventually shared the league crown. “(The Roadrunners) went on to win CIF in their division, and I submitted my resignation that night, because I knew, and I told the principal to please keep it quiet,” Giddings said. “But I wish I could have kept it going. I had so much fun.” Free agency was changing the NFL and Giddings’ business grew, which meant he needed to spend more time evaluating pro players on film and less time at Newport Harbor football booster meetings at the Canary restaurant, where everyone had a blast. Fritz Howser, a three-year standout fullback for the Sailors in three of Giddings’ four years (1982-84), said playing for him was beyond high school football. “It was good playing for Giddings, because it was like playing high school football in a professional setting,” Howser said. “Coach Giddings was a critical component in turning a lot of things around and getting Newport Harbor football back into winning.” When Giddings volunteered to coach the sophomore team, his son, Mike, was playing on the varsity and earning MVP honors, and later playing for Illinois in the Rose Bowl Game. Giddings never coached his son at Harbor. “When my son was playing at Newport Harbor, it was obvious we weren’t going to win on speed, so you better have some size,” Giddings said. “So we went out to the ninth grade P.E. classes and I got all the big guys assembled, and I said ‘guys if you’ll join my program, I’m going to put you on the weights and work your (rear) off. But I promise you two things by the time you’re seniors: Your (breasts) will become pecks and you’ll be dating one of those blond cheerleaders.’ It’s called internal recruiting, and we were big. If you look at our line in those days, one year our right tackle was 290 pounds and our whole offensive line were guys 250-270. We were big and so we kept the ball or pass protected. Once we got to Foley it was pass protecting. To me, that’s the start – getting big kids out.”

With offensive linemen like Mike Beech (UCLA), David Cadigan (USC) and Tom Kitchens (Air Force), the Sailors manhandled opponents in the trenches with large, intelligent and wellcoached players. After an All-American career at USC, Cadigan played seven years in the NFL, six with the New York Jets, at 6-foot-4, 280 pounds. Cadigan was a No. 1 draft pick of the Jets in 1988. As a Sailor, the 6-7, 237-pound Kitchens was an All-CIF selection, and following an outstanding collegiate career, he became a C-141 pilot and captain in the U.S. Air Force. Giddings, a war buff, quipped that the C-141 is the only aircraft in which Kitchens could fly at his height. “It’s a huge, giant transport,” Giddings said. “I mean there’s no way he fits in a fighter plane.” Kitchens, who fell in love with the weight room at Harbor, was among those to greatly benefit from his time here. “I don’t think I’d be where I am today if it wasn’t for high school football and getting involved with that,” Kitchens said. “(Giddings) kind of took up the job (at Harbor) as a hobby, to tell you the truth. I had not had a better coach at any level. (Giddings) was a pro football coach who was doing this for the love of the game, because he thought it would benefit us, and of course it did.” Beech suffered serious head injuries after falling off a two-story balcony at a fraternity house during his freshman year at UCLA and never played again. “If Beech hadn’t fallen off that balcony (at UCLA) – he could have had as good an NFL career as David (Cadigan),” Giddings said. “David was physically gifted, but Beech was a center in basketball and he was just a natural football player. But the most productive lineman we ever had was too small – Brett Kacura. He was 5-10.” Prior to taking over the varsity, and in Giddings’ third and final year as the sophomore coach in 1981, the Sailors trampled through the Sea View League with players like Kacura and Brazas. “I think that got everything going,” Giddings said of the ’81 sophomore team that finished 10-0, following back-to-back 5-4 seasons and playing in the Sunset League. “Our sophomore team would have beaten anybody. Our games weren’t even close.” To hear Giddings speak of his 1980s teams and players resonates with Sailor pride, and to hear his former players talk about their coach symbolizes a proud Tar Ball heritage. feature story A young Mike Giddings idolized Harold (Hal) Sheflin, the Sailor’s great bull elephant fullback, circa 1942.

Giddings always wanted to play for Newport Harbor, but never did; instead, he became a legendary coach for the Sailors in a storybook football career.

Growing up on Topaz Avenue on Balboa Island in the 1930s and 40s, Giddings spent most of his free time surfing and fishing. “I loved to fish in the bay, and we actually ate it in those days – spotfin croaker, bass,” Giddings said. “We used to feed our family for a week, because when I was young it was Depression time, and then during World War II we had our own victory gardens. People forget we had to grow our own food in World War II. They forget. I can hear my mom – she would say there are people starving in Europe. Eat your vegetables.” On Dec. 7, 1941, his mother, Kathryn, came charging toward the shore on an unusually warm morning in the 10 o’clock hour, when Giddings and his younger sister, Carolynn, were swimming in the ocean at Big Corona, before the jetty was extended. “There were no houses at the time – there was hardly anything there,” Giddings said. “So my mom comes over the cliff and yells down, ‘Children, children, get out of the water.’ I asked ‘why mom?’ She said the Japanese are attacking Pearl Harbor, and I said ‘mom isn’t Pearl Harbor in Hawaii? ‘Yes, Michael, it is in Hawaii,’ she said, and then I said ‘won’t it take them a while to get here? Why do we have to get out of the water?’” Soon after the Pearl Harbor attack, Giddings moved with his family to South Pasadena, where he spent the first three years of his life. He was born in 1933 at St. Vincent Hospital in Los Angeles. “I always wanted to play for Newport,” Giddings said. “Harold Sheflin was my hero and so forth. But right after Pearl Harbor, the next year, my folks moved up to South Pasadena, with the promise that I could come back and play football for Newport. Well, once you got to South Pasadena, Frank Williamson was our coach and you ended up just dying to play for him.” Williamson, a star lineman for USC in the early 1930s, coached a combined South Pasadena/San Marino program for 11 years, winning nine league championships, before turning to administration and becoming the Monrovia High Principal. Williamson passed away in 2002. In 1942, Sheflin famously sparked the Sailors to their first CIF-Southern Section championship game, after the Tars captured their inaugural Sunset League title, defeating every opponent, including highly regarded Santa Ana, 7-0, late in

the regular season. “Mom and dad split when I was in like sixth, seventh grade, then as soon as I graduated from South Pasadena High School (in 1951), mom moved back down here to Bay Shores,” Giddings said. “That’s why my sister, who’s 2 ½ years younger, graduated from Newport, and then my son (Mike) also graduated from Newport (in 1981).” Giddings returned to Newport for a third time in his life when he began coaching at USC in 1961 and purchased a home in Newport Shores, a perfect spot for any surfer. Giddings made a big name for himself on Trojan Coach John McKay’s staff as defensive coordinator, and USC won the 1962 national championship under his watch. Giddings, who served as a head coach at Glendale College, the University of Utah and the Hawaiians in the World Football League, joined the San Francisco 49ers’ coaching staff in 1968 and has worked in the NFL since, mostly through his player evaluation business, Proscout, Inc. When Giddings started his business and decided to settle in Newport, he couldn’t resist getting back on the field, so he volunteered to coach the sophomore football team at Harbor in 1979 and three years later he was named varsity head coach, starting a local legacy second to none. From his top-level apartment at the Balboa Bay Resort, Mike Giddings, who will turn 86 on Nov. 16 and is blessed with good vision and a sharp mind, provides a bird’s-eye view for the NFL. In one of the most interesting man caves in Newport Beach, Giddings evaluates NFL players for a handful of teams, a business he started more than four decades ago and maintained during his seven years as a football coach at Newport Harbor High (1979-1985). While few his age are still working, Giddings and his business, Proscout, Inc., are thriving in the information-crazed NFL, in which there are about 10 teams each year that employ his player evaluation services. Giddings, for whom there is an immensely passionate following from former Sailor players, closely guards his evaluations and rankings about every NFL player. Those players include many who are not in the league and could be possible signees later or might be close enough in ability to be considered filling a roster spot. These days, Giddings’ son, Mike, operates the bulk of the business out of Park City, Utah, where he loves to ski. After playing football at Harbor, Mike Giddings, Jr. later played for Illinois in the 1984 Rose Bowl Game. The elder Giddings had coached for USC in the Granddaddy of Them All in Pasadena, forming a rare father/son Rose Bowl Game connection. The elder Giddings has worked in the NFL only one year less than the age of the Super Bowl, which started in 1967. Giddings built a spectacular coaching résumé at USC, Utah, the San Francisco 49ers and Denver Broncos in the NFL and the Hawaiians in the World Football League, where he wore many hats, including head coach, general manager, radio and TV pitchman and player personnel guru. With the Hawaiians in 1974 following a 2-8 first half, Giddings stocked the roster with players who had been cut by NFL teams and the Hawaiians rallied in the second half with a 7-3 record. His time with the Hawaiians opened the door to his business, as Giddings, the head coach, was asked to also serve as general manager after the first WFL game of the season. The owners of the Hawaiians fired the first general manager “because the season tickets weren’t delivered,” Giddings said, and as soon as the team returned home from a two-game road trip to start the season, his work load increased like a shorthanded bus boy on a Saturday night. “We were playing (our first home game in Hawaii) like a Sunday night and they were running around in taxi cabs delivering season tickets,” Giddings said of the team’s management. “I don’t know what happened (with season tickets not being delivered), because we had been on the road in the mainland. We trained at UC Riverside and played our first two games, one in Florida and one against the Southern California Sun (at Angel Stadium of Anaheim). So I became the general manager and coach, and I

had no interest in being the general manager. But I had to sit in on all the meetings on decisions that would be made financially and if we’re going to spend money on this guy or that guy.” In addition to being the Hawaiians’ TV and radio fundraising pitchman in the offseason, Giddings continued a successful practice of identifying talent on the field. “It’s interesting,” Giddings said. “You say it’s a small part of (my) story, because it was only a year and half and you hardly remember the World Football League – and more people probably around here remember the WFL because of the Southern California Sun and Anthony Davis. But for me it was a huge, huge factor in the rest of my life. So that’s the bottom line I guess. “The other thing was, here I have my ideal job. I’m a football coach and a surfer, and frankly I never had time for either (in Hawaii). I spent most of the time going on TV and radio raising money.” Even before the WFL, Giddings had a vision for his business while coaching for the 49ers. Giddings said virtually all of the NFL teams were only scouting college players, and not for rating or finding pros, and when there was an immediate need for a player at a certain position, teams were often scrambling to locate viable replacements. Because of his eagle eye to spot talent and accurately evaluate pro players, the 49ers were prepared to make Giddings their first Director of Pro Scouting. “That was the impetus of my business,” Giddings said. “Nobody

was scouting players. It actually started with the ’Niners. Actually it was (Jim) Sniadecki, my third outside ‘backer. He tore an Achilles. We’re playing in Buffalo and it’s the second game of the season. And our head coach (Dick Nolan) says who are we going to replace Sni with? And I thought well isn’t that our front office job? And in those days – it’s like 1973 – our front office only scouted college guys. And so (Nolan) said you’re always bugging me to do more and all that, and he says I think we’ll make you in charge of pro scouting next year. Well, next year never came because that’s when I went to Hawaii.” After the WFL folded, Giddings was hired by the Broncos as Director of Pro Scouting, as well as the offensive line coach, so Denver Coach John Ralston could get the inside scoop from Giddings about top-tier WFL players and highly rated NFL cuts who might be available. These days, Giddings handles the linemen for Proscout. August is his busiest month, because NFL teams in training camp are trimming rosters and cutting players, and about 300 linemen who are suddenly out of work will need to be evaluated and assigned to a new list of available players. Giddings estimates that about 10 of them will truly be evaluated as primed and ready NFL signees. The one detail Giddings did reveal about his current player rankings is that New England quarterback Tom Brady, despite his age at 42, is rated No. 1, continuing the theme of success at a ripe age.
