Dear parents, alumni, sponsors, and fans of Newport Harbor athletics.

Tonight, and the annual Battle of the Bay game will be the senior’s last performances under the Davidson Field lights.

Life has a funny way of rushing by when we least expect it.

It’s senior night… an occasion where we pay tribute to the hard work, dedication, and heart these young men have poured into this team and this sport.

If you’re a parent, relative, or friend of a senior, you will probably relate to that first sentence. Wow. We have been so fortunate to watch and play with the students, families, and friends of our seniors.

I have had the pleasure of meeting all

these seniors in their first year at NHHS. I guess that’s what happens when you stay in one place for so long. It’s been my pleasure to serve Principal Boulton, Coach Lofthouse and Athletic Director Murray as the Booster Club President since 2018, A heartfelt “Thank You” to those who have worked tirelessly to give the players and coaches the best experience possible.

Watching all these neighborhood kids play football for Newport Harbor would not be possible without the generosity of the Newport Beach community. Together, we have done some great things. Some of these events are “life-changing” for kids and their families. I encourage you to be involved and stay involved.

Our mission, as a booster club, is to provide resources to Coach Lofthouse and his staff to keep building Newport Harbor High School Football into one of the most respected public school football programs in the country for our student-athletes.

To all alumni, parents, and community supporters –welcome!

This is NHHS’s 94th year of playing football and tonight we have a LOT going on, so buckle up.

It’s homecoming week – a reunion where young and old gather to celebrate community at NHHS. Thank you to the Alumni Association for hosting the 3rd annual homecoming tailgate at our neighboring ENC facility. This year’s party included a celebration of 50 seasons of the John Gust Football Award.

It’s also senior night – a sentimental night for seniors and their families. Thank you to all of our parents, teachers, and coaches who support our young student-athletes. Our seniors have learned life lessons and are well-prepared for their next chapter.

On the school front, 2023 has started out with a strong enthusiasm for learning and playing. I am grateful for our students and teachers who follow tradition and create legacies of their own.

On the football front, our team has been “battle tested” with five equally matched preseason opponents. The stiff preseason competition will come in handy as we kick off the season opener of the Sunset League. As of this writing, Coach Lofthouse and the football staff have our team at 2-3. This has been our toughest preseason schedule since Coach Lofthouse took the reins in the spring of 2018.

I am GRATEFUL to Coach Lofthouse and his staff for taking on this challenge and helping our kids develop disciplined work habits and character traits that are essential for a successful existence after high school. In the end, this character-building is what is most important. Our student-athletes develop life-long skills that are essential for professional success and personal livelihood beyond football.

I will echo a past request. Let’s piggy-back on Coach Lofthouse, the staff, and the players in GIVING OUR BEST on the following fronts:

n Let’s show OUR BEST RESPECT to the hard work and competitive spirit of our young men and women as they compete—by modeling good sportsmanship and proper decorum at all of our games and events.

n Let’s offer OUR BEST HOSPITALITY to the guests that we host at Davidson Field. We have the most beautiful high school setting in all the land (just look up at the sky at kickoff). Let’s be thankful for that and make sure our guests feel welcome.

n Finally, let’s give OUR BEST EFFORT in all things we do as Sailors, whether that be on the field, in the classroom, or around the community.

On this special night (senior night) I would like to thank the dedicated student-athletes class of 2024 of football, band, and cheer—along with all the parents and supporters who have devoted their time, effort, and money to our programs. Go Sailors! O

THE ESSENCE OF COACH LOFTHOUSE’S “5 F’S” PHILOSOPHY

Getting a few minutes with Coach Peter Lofthouse is easier than you might think. After spending more than eight years at the JUCO ranks, including a historic season at San Diego’s Mesa College where in three short years the program went from 3-7 to 9-2 and won its first bowl game in over 30 years, Coach Lofthouse has settled into Newport Harbor High School and is our 6th year head football coach.

“Anytime someone wants to talk about what we’re trying to accomplish at Newport Harbor,” Coach Lofthouse says, “I’m Interested.”

Tonight we celebrate the senior class of 2024.

We have 31 of them.

At the end of the season, their names will be added to The Long Grey Line with the other men who played Friday nights on Davidson Field.

Seniors always have a special place on the team. Each class has a ‘story’ all to themselves. These seniors have endured the most difficult challenge that I can ever remember in my coaching career. Basically, the beginning and middle of their high school was interrupted. I don’t like mentioning what it was (that interrupted them) so I won’t – but we all know what it was.

They hung in there. They fought like hell, both mentally and physically, and they made it. They got five games in their freshman year. They started the season 3-7 their sophomore year before “catching fire” and winning CIF. Last year, as juniors, they played in the Division 4 semifinals. Now, this year is their swan song. Tonight we open up our Sunset League play with an improved Huntington Beach team. Our tough pre-season schedule should have us ready and I know you can expect their best effort. Being around these guys is just so much fun. I am a lucky coach.

Let’s tip our cap to them tonight. Thank you for coming. Finally, as with all home games, please make sure you stay until the end when we sing our alma mater. In case you’re not sure of the words, here is a study guide:

Coach Lofthouse believes that the game of football, at the high school level, is a teaching tool and an opportunity to change the lives of young men through experience. It’s a unique opportunity for teenagers to not only learn values that work on the football field, but any athletic field… and more importantly, values that they can instill into their lives well beyond their high school years.

These values are called “The 5 F’s” and it’s instilled in EVERYTHING we do.

Monste Ibarra

Monste Ibarra is being escorted by Yandel Urbano. Monste Ibarra’s favorite class at Newport Harbor has been American Democracy because she and her friend have it together. Her favorite experience at Harbor was being backstage at Dancing With the Staff last year with the girls. During her free time, she loves to hang out with friends. Monste has loved getting to know new people throughout her years at Newport Harbor. One of her involvements that she is very passionate about is the Latinos Unidos Club.

Mackenzi Van Hamersveld

Mackenzi Van Hamersveld is being escorted by her boyfriend, Owen Phillips. Mackenzi’s favorite memory at Newport Harbor was when the school flooded and people were swimming through the wreckage! Her favorite thing about the school is the lunch ladies because they are so sweet. Her favorite class at NHHS has been AP Government with Mr. Lee, who won Teacher of the Year in 2024. Mackenzi is very involved in the community as she is a part of Mock Trial as well as Yoki’s Garden and the Newport Harbor Choir. During her free time, Mackenzi loves to design and curate vintage clothing and enjoys reading classic literature.

Alyssa East

Alyssa East is being escorted by her uncle, Fernando Gutierrez. Alyssa enjoyed English class with Ms. Corbett the most because they both shared a crazy love for books and Ms. Corbett was always easy to talk to. At Newport Harbor, Alyssa’s favorite memory was when Profe Albitar hosted parties in class and her overall favorite thing about the school is the variety of book choices in the English classes. Alyssa is the president of the NHHS Book Lover Club and this year will be her second year at Link Crew. When Alyssa has spare time she likes to spend it with her family and friends.

Vanessa Agama

Vanessa Agama is being escorted by her dad, Julio Agama. Her favorite class at Newport Harbor has been AVID because of all of the new people she has met. Vanessa’s favorite experience at Newport Harbor has been going to all of the football games because she enjoys all of the energy and excitement. Her favorite thing about Newport Harbor is the wonderful teachers. Vanessa is on the Cross Country Team at the school and is also the junior vice president of the Latinos Unidos Club. Her favorite thing to do in her free time is to spend time with friends.

SOPHOMORE PRINCESS

Corinna Ruffini

Corrina Ruffini is being escorted by her father, Richard Ruffini. Corinna’s favorite class is ceramics because it gave her a lot of creative freedom and was a nice escape from academic classes. She describes her favorite Newport Harbor memory as singing Dancing Queen by ABBA at her first home football game with all her friends. Corinna’s favorite thing about Newport Harbor is its open campus. She is a part of many programs on campus such as AVID, Surfrider Club, Youth, and Government, and is even the vice president of the Outdoor Adventures Club. Corinna loves to dive and is on the NHHS, club, and USA International diving team. In Corinna’s free time, she enjoys going to the beach, baking, and traveling

FRESHMAN PRINCESS

Katie Green

Katie is being escorted by her father, Rowan Green. Her favorite class is math with Mr. Melstrom. He is a great teacher and she can spend time with her friends in the class. Katie’s favorite memory at Newport Harbor is playing field hockey because she is learning a new sport that she enjoys. Katie keeps herself highly involved at Newport Harbor and the community as she is in a couple of clubs such as Paws for Caws and Surfrider, along with being a part of Elk Lodge’s Antlers. During her free time, Kate likes going to the beach with her friends and family.
