We go behind the scenes at Taos Cancer Support Services and learn how they help patients navigate the rough road ahead. The program provides cancer patients with logistical and emotional support while they undergo treatment. In addition, the group provides financial resources, helps with transportation and lodging, and connects clients to the wellness community with recommendations and rebates.
We talk to Aspen Mirabal of Taos Pueblo and learn why there’s been a resurgence of interest in births assisted by midwives and doulas. Doula is a Greek term for a woman who supports a mother through childbirth. She has been attending births as a doula for the past five years and identifies as an Indigenous birth worker, lactation educator, and assistant midwife. “All these roles were created by and for Indigenous people. As a Taos Pueblo member, I feel proud to say that I’m an Indigenous birth worker.” As a nod to her hard work, she was chosen to grace the cover of Well Taos 2023.
