Swimming is one of the rare activities that can truly carry a person through an entire lifetime. It builds strength without strain, improves cardiovascular health without impact, and fosters community across generations. In Taos and the surrounding region, access to pools, rivers and mountain lakes allows residents to engage with water not just for fitness, but for connection, healing and joy.
At the heart of Taos’ aquatic culture is the Taos Swim Club, a year-round program dedicated to water safety, fitness, and character development. Serving children as young as four through competitive youth swimmers, high school athletes, and adults, the club’s mission is
simple but powerful: to make swimming accessible and lifelong.
“One of our core beliefs is that swimming is a life-saving skill,” says assistant coach Jeff Serpan. “Everyone should have access to learning how to be safe and confident in the water.”
The Taos Swim Club operates multiple pathways, from Learn to Swim and stroke development to competitive age-group teams and high school preparation. Scholarships and modest monthly fees help ensure that cost is not a barrier for local families.
For adults — especially older adults — swimming offers a way to stay active without the joint stress that can limit other sports. Taos Swim Club’s Masters Swim Program welcomes swimmers 18 and older, including participants well into their 80s.
“Our masters swimmers range widely in age,” Serpan says. “Swimming lets people stay strong, mobile, and connected without the wear and tear.”
Some masters swimmers train for competition and have even set New Mexico Masters records, while others simply come for coached workouts, stroke improvement, and the social benefits of moving together in the water.
Not everyone wants to swim laps—and Taos’ pool programming reflects that. The Taos Youth and Family Center pool offers Aqua Fit (water aerobics) classes, therapy pool sessions, and parent-tot programs designed to introduce even the youngest residents to the water in a safe, supportive environment.
Water aerobics has become especially popular among seniors and people recovering from injury. The buoyancy of water reduces pressure on joints while still providing resistance for strength and cardiovascular conditioning.
In Angel Fire, water fitness takes on an inclusive, upbeat tone through Aquafit, the water fitness program led by instructor Jan Zientara. Designed for all ages and fitness levels, Aquafit blends music, movement, and water resistance to create workouts that are effective, accessible, and fun. Zientara has been certified through the Aquatic Exercise Association for 26 years and maintains her credentials through continuing education. Aquafit classes require no registration—participants simply show up. Classes are held at the Angel Fire Resort pool and fitness facilities. For current class times, contact the Angel Fire Resort reception desk.
Beyond the pool, the Rio Grande offers opportunities for water-based fitness and adventure that connect people directly to the landscape. Guided rafting trips range from mellow float trips to whitewater runs through the Rio Grande Gorge, offering both physical activity and a deeper understanding of local geology, history, and wildlife.
The popular racecourse section of the river combines calm stretches with moderate rapids, making it accessible to a wide range of participants. Several local outfitters also offer inflatable kayaking and stand-up paddle boarding on the Rio Grande when conditions allow, providing a full-body workout that emphasizes balance, core strength, and endurance.
For flatwater paddle boarding, Monte Verde Lake in Angel Fire is a regional favorite. During the summer season, the lake’s boathouse rents paddle boards, pedal boards, kayaks, canoes, and paddle boats. Calm conditions make Monte Verde ideal for beginners, families, and those seeking a low-impact workout in a scenic alpine setting.
In Taos and Angel Fire, staying active for life doesn’t always mean pushing harder. Sometimes, it simply means getting back into the water.

Nature provided our first food and medicine and still holds the key to good health today. Taos is full of resources for healthy eating and other ways to take care of our bodies.
“While every client is different in terms of needs, health history and food preferences, some core principles apply to everyone,“ says Nutritionist Maggie Minter. “I encourage people to include as many whole foods as possible, such as grains, lean proteins, fruit and vegetables. Aim for variety or ‘eating the colors of the rainbow’ and focus on small, realistic changes rather than a complete overhaul. I also emphasize that consistency matters far more than perfection.”
Minter is the owner of Taos Nutrition, and a board-certified health and wellness
coach who teaches a nutrition course at the University of New Mexico-Taos. She says one important part of her coaching is helping clients navigate the overwhelming amount of nutrition misinformation and conflicting advice available.
“It’s critical to ask questions, look at credible research and remember that there is no one-size-fits-all approach to nutrition,” she says.
For the colder months, Minter encourages people to focus on food that is in season in our region and doesn’t have to travel far to reach us, including winter squash, cabbage, Brussels sprouts and root vegetables. Frozen fruit and vegetables that were picked and preserved at the height of freshness are other good choices. As we move toward spring, early vegetables like spinach, radishes and leafy greens add variety and vitamins to our diet.

Making small changes to build habits gradually, and noticing how food makes you feel can support you as you add more nature-based food to your diet.
“It all starts with what we put into our bodies,” Lee Backer, general manager of Cid’s Food Market, says. Cid’s has been providing natural food free of artificial ingredients for 40 years. “Eating organic produce is very important for health because it allows us to stay away from pesticides and chemical fertilizers that cause problems with the land and people’s health,” he explains.
In addition to organic produce, Cid’s also has health and beauty items. “We try to have clean, healthy and fresh products,” Backer says. “It’s a simple idea but not that easy to find in some places.”
Taos Food Coop is another source for natural food and products. The Coop focuses on providing the healthiest food available, which makes great ingredients for salads and vegetable dishes. It carries grass-fed meat, all-organic dairy products and healthy fats like high-quality olive and coconut oils.
“Home cooking of natural and local foods is the cornerstone of healthy eating,” Susan Moore, the Coop’s president and general manager, says. “We sell no genetically modified foods and about 90 percent of the foods we offer are organic.”
The Coop also offers free classes on food and health, including one on exploring ancestral foods as a way to health.

Both Western medicine and naturebased approaches can offer ways to support our health. While Western medicine is a good choice for severe illness and emergencies, alternative medicine excels at offering resources to help prevent sickness and treat the whole self, including body and mind.
For cold and flu season, Chinese medicinal mushrooms can support our cells, making them more alert and ready
to attack pathogens, according to Tina Hahn, co-founder of Taos Herb. Vitamins D and C, along with a B complex that helps turn food into energy, also support our bodies’ natural defenses.
During all times of year, Hahn recommends an approach she calls DESSA: diet, exercise, sleep, stress management and attitude. “Incorporating as much raw food as possible is key to good health,” she says. “We also need sleep to allow the

body to rest, restore and repair. When we are overburdened or pushing too hard, we need to manage our stress by means like exercise or meditation. To keep a positive attitude, we can find ways to release endorphins by simple things like petting the cat or dog.”
During the colder months, we don’t get outside as much, so we can bring nature indoors. Andrew Balazs at the Ace Garden Center says, “Plants help create a general liveliness to our living spaces. They filter the air and add humidity.” He adds that, especially in off-grid homes or other indoor growing environments, being able to harvest

fresh food on demand is another way to support health.
The garden centers at all three Ace Hardware locations in Taos will begin to get trees and plants for outdoor growing by late March and will be in full swing by Mother’s Day in May.
Petree’s Nursery and Greenhouses is another local source for healthy plants. Horticulturist Dan Jones agrees that plants help clean indoor air and points out that NASA compiled a list of plants that contribute to healthy indoor spaces. He adds that if you want to improve the health of your environment, it only makes sense to introduce healthy plants.

"Plants help create a general liveliness to our living spaces. They filter the air and add humidity. Especially in off-grid homes or other indoor growing environments, being able to harvest fresh food on demand is another way to support health."

“A key to maintaining healthy plants is knowing their requirements,” Jones says. “A good houseplant book or a quick internet search can advise you on the specific conditions a particular variety of houseplant likes best. Number one is light. You don’t want a cactus in a dark corner. But there are plants that will thrive in a dark corner. Second comes watering. Far more people overwater than under water. And third, invest in good quality potting soil appropriate to

the plant type and fertilize according to your plant’s preferences.”
Jones says we can improve our state of mind by having beautiful, healthy, thriving plants around us. “Right now, I have a bougainvillea that is a cascade of rich purple flowers and it buoys my spirits on these cold winter days,” Jones adds.
One of his favorite houseplants is the Zami, or ZZ Top. The plant has rich, glossy green leaves and thrives in a sunny window or dark corner. It only requires thorough watering once a month. Herbs like rosemary add fragrance to the house and can be harvested to sprinkle on dishes like roast potatoes.
Jones reminds us that although the weather is cold, we can still get outdoors for “forest bathing,” which is really just a walk in the woods, through the sage or wherever we can be in Mother Nature’s beauty.
“You’ll immediately feel the calming influences,” Jones says. “As a gardener, I’m blessed to step out my door and be surrounded by trees, shrubs and plants. Even in winter I make sure there is beauty — the structure of swaying grasses, the vibrant yellow and red twigs of the Midwinter Fire dogwood and the rich palette of blues and greens offered by pine and blue spruce dwarfs in my gardens. Add the sighting of a bluebird feeding on a dried berry and you’ve hit the jackpot.”

In the high-altitude landscape of Taos, a growing number of residents are intentionally subjecting themselves to extreme temperatures. It isn’t a survivalist trial, but rather a deliberate wellness practice known as contrast therapy. By alternating between the intense dry heat of a sauna and the bracing bite of a cold plunge, locals are seeking everything from chronic pain relief to a mental edge.
Neil Collins, owner of Wolfgang’s Spa Works, sees this trend daily. While his business has long centered on hot tubs, he has observed a significant shift toward saunas and cold plunges as tools for health and wellness.
The core concept of contrast therapy involves

introducing controlled stressors — heat shock and cold shock — into the body to generate beneficial biological responses. “Saunas and cold plunges take a little bit of education,” Collins says. “Saunas can be hard to get into, and cold plunges can be really difficult ... There need to be good reasons behind it.”
The physiology: Why it works
When you enter a sauna, your body generates heat shock proteins. Extensive studies, most notably from Finland, have linked frequent sauna use to a reduced risk of cardiovascular problems and increased circulation.
Conversely, plunging into cold water — typically between 48°F and 59°F — activates coldshock proteins, which, in turn, boost alertness. Collins describes the post-plunge feeling as a natural “high” that provides intense mental clarity for hours.
While scientific evidence for reduced inflammation is still developing, Collins reports personal success in managing disc-related back pain, noting it often drops from an “eight” to a “two” on the pain scale after a session. For him, contrast therapy is a lifestyle rather than a quick fix. His daily routine includes a morning sauna, a cold plunge, and a workout.
“I never am like, ‘I can’t wait to get in that cold plunge,’” he says. “But afterwards, I get this incredible feeling of accomplishment; that I’ve done something hard. It builds mental discipline and makes the rest of the day’s challenges — like difficult emails or conversations — feel much more manageable.”
by David Perez
Anecdotally, Collins and his family have also experienced unexpected benefits, such as weight loss, despite making no changes to their diet or exercise. While he notes that many scientists claim there is no proven link between cold plunges and weight loss, he emphasizes that it was a consistent observation among himself, his wife, his father, and other spa dealers that immersing oneself in cold water led to weight loss.
Another way people experience cold-water immersion is through the annual Polar Plunge, which takes place in lakes and other waterways throughout the world, including Eagle Nest. Participants invariably extol the invigorating nature of the plunges — enough to keep doing it year after year.
Sauna vs. steam: Understanding the heat
Before diving in, it is helpful to distinguish between the two main types of heat therapy:
A dry sauna features high temperatures (often up to 195°F) with low humidity. In traditional Finnish style, you can create bursts of steam by ladling water onto hot rocks.
If you aren’t ready to install a unit at home, Taos offers several excellent facilities to experience contrast therapy:
Taos Spa & Tennis Club: A premier local example featuring a steam room, two dry saunas, and a dedicated cold plunge for a complete contrast experience.

The steam room provides lower temperatures but 100 percent humidity, which is particularly effective for clearing sinuses and respiratory pathways.
Because contrast therapy places significant stress on the cardiovascular system, it is not for everyone. Collins notes that his team is cautious when selling to older populations or those with pre-existing conditions. Cold plunges, in particular, can cause a sudden spike in heart rate and blood pressure.
“Always consult a healthcare provider if you have heart disease, high blood pressure, or are pregnant, or if you have any other issues you’re concerned about," Collins said. "Research is healthy. Start slow. You don’t need to jump into 45°F water immediately. Maybe you want to test the waters by doing a cold shower at home. Listen to your body.”
Wolfgang’s Spa Works loves it when people stop by to ask questions and share experiences. “We’re here for you, and we’re constantly learning, too," Collins said.

Ojo Caliente Mineral Springs Resort & Spa: Located a short drive away, this destination offers historical context through its mineral soaking pools, sauna, and steam room.
Hydrate: Drink plenty of water before and after your sessions; avoid alcohol.
Short bursts: Start with just 30 seconds to 2 minutes in the cold.
Breathe: Focus on slow, controlled breaths to manage the initial cold shock.
Gradual heat: If you are new to saunas, start at a lower temperature (like 120°F) and work your way up.
Never go alone: Especially when trying cold immersion for the first time, ensure someone is nearby.
The “Home” Method: Use your bathtub or a cold shower to build tolerance before visiting a professional spa.

comes to the pool with a lifetime behind him and momentum still carrying him forward.
He is an Olympic gold medalist, yes — a breaststroker on the U.S. men’s 4x100 meter relay team that broke the world record and won gold at the 1960 Rome Olympics. But to frame Hait only by that achievement misses the deeper current of his life: a stubborn insistence on movement, purpose and belief, even — especially — when circumstances argue otherwise.
“I was told I’d never competitively swim again,”
Hait says, recalling the back injury that nearly ended his career before it truly began.
As a Stanford freshman, Hait sufered a severe spinal injury in a locker room accident.
His sciatic nerve was partially severed. He wore a steel brace, dragged one leg across campus and spent months recovering afer surgery. Four and a half months before the Olympic trials, a specialist told him fatly that his competitive swimming days were over.

Hait didn’t listen.
Instead, he walked into the Santa Clara Swim Club and asked legendary coach George Haines if he could train. Haines asked what he could do. “I can pull,” Hait told him.Tat was enough.
Hait trained with limitations — initially unable to dive properly, unable to kick like the other swimmers — and still qualifed for the 1960 Olympic team. In Rome, he swam the breaststroke leg of the medley relay, breaking the world record in the heats and again in the fnals. Te race marked the frst time the 4x100 meter relay appeared in Olympic competition. Tat American dominance, Hait notes, lasted more than six decades.
“ Tat race became a dynasty,” he says. Swimming, however, was only one chapter.
Afer graduating from Stanford with degrees in mechanical engineering and industrial design, Hait joined Varian Associates, where he worked on ultra-high vacuum equipment and helped develop the klystron tube — the technology that enabled the 1964 Tokyo Olympics to be broadcast by satellite for the frst time. He eventually amassed more than 70 patents, including inventions used on nuclear submarines and equipment designed to withstand underground nuclear explosions.
Ten there was beef jerky.
What began as a backyard experiment turned into Pemmican, which at one time was the top-selling meat snack in the nation. Hait sold the company to General Mills. He went on to design energy-efcient grills and stoves, raise bufalo, and spearhead the creation of the Hiawatha Big Medicine Blanket — a Pendleton blanket incorporating sacred white bufalo fur, produced domestically and tied to Indigenous prophecy and cultural preservation.
Tese weren’t reinventions so much as continuations.
“I love impossible problems,” Hait says.
Art emerged the same way. During his wife Betsy’s long illness, Hait began painting birds — more than 150 of them over two years — as a way to manage grief and stress. Tose
birds evolved into needlepoint designs inspired by the Taos landscape and Southwest patterns. Painting, he says, helped keep him alive. Te water did too.
Years afer his Olympic triumph, Hait sufered a pulmonary embolism — a full blockage at the saddle of the lungs — followed later by a stroke. Doctors told him he should not have survived either event. One cardiologist, reviewing his chart, told Hait he felt as though he were “looking at an apparition.”
Hait attributes his survival to lung capacity, cardiovascular strength and decades in the pool.
“Swimming is the best exercise I ever did,” he says. “It gave me the strength to survive things that should have killed me.”
Tat belief became the foundation of his work with cancer patients. Trough his Seeds of Joy foundation, Hait placed his Olympic gold medal around the necks of people with terminal diagnoses, ofering hope rooted not in denial but in lived experience.
“If I could do what I did in four and a half months, being told I’d never swim again,” he told them, “you can fght this.”
Hait is deeply spiritual and philosophical, given to metaphors and frameworks he calls “anchor points” — ways of organizing faith, creativity, intellect and purpose around a spiritual center. He writes poetry. He lectures. He is now turning the Psalms into music, one by one, a project he continues to pursue with the same intensity that once drove him into the pool.
At the aquatic center in Taos, Hait watches the water carefully, waiting for the quiet lap time. He prefers calm, rhythm, space to move.
When the pool clears, his face brightens. “ Tis,” he says, looking out over the water, “this is where I belong.”
For Paul Hait, movement has never been optional. Forward is the only direction he recognizes — in the water, in work, in grief, in faith. Te medals matter. Te inventions matter. But what defnes him most is not what he has survived, or even what he has achieved — it is that he keeps going.

What 105-year-old Julia Valerio teaches us about aging well
by Ellen Miller-Goins
On Tuesday and Thursday mornings, a small but determined group gathers at the Taos County Senior Center, rolling out resistance bands, lifting light hand weights and greeting one another like old friends — because they are. Among them is Julia Valerio, who turned 105 in October and still arrives ready to move.
“Always move,” Valerio says. It’s advice she has shared for decades. Friends recall her saying the same thing — even as milestone birthday cards and statewide recognition arrived for her 100th birthday. Priscilla Romo, who now leads the class, remembers being invited to the party and guessing Valerio was “like 76.” The room erupted in laughter: it was her 100th.
“That’s how good she looked,” Romo says.
Valerio, who has lived in Llano Quemado her entire life, is the oldest participant in the fitness class, but she is hardly the only one defying expectations. The women around her range from their 70s to their 90s, led by Priscilla Romo, a self-described “youngster” at 68. Together, they illustrate a powerful lesson in aging well: movement matters, but so does community.
Born Oct. 14, 1920, Valerio grew up as one of 10 children, helping support her family from a young age. As a teenager, she traveled seasonally to Colorado to harvest potatoes and other crops. During World War II, she worked as a seamstress in a government sewing program and later joined women who annually mud-plastered San Francisco de Asís Church in Ranchos de Taos.
She married Agapito Valerio in 1951 and raised a family. The years also brought deep loss: one son died at 4, another died at 19 in an auto accident. Her husband died in 1994. Her daughter died two years ago, her family says. On the snowy Thursday she arrived for her fitness class, her remaining son, Johnny, and

daughter-in-law, Christine, were the ones dropping her off.
At 105, Valerio still cleans her own house every Friday, does her laundry and prepares her meals. She walks regularly, when the weather allows. Doctors often tell her family she appears decades younger than her age, a sentiment echoed by friends.
But Valerio credits neither genetics nor luck. She credits work, faith and movement.
The fitness class Valerio attends twice a week is not about weight loss or appearance. Romo says the focus is strength — particularly the kind that helps prevent falls and maintain independence.
“At one time or another, you could fall,” Romo says. “This is about getting strong and staying strong.”
At-home exercise routines can be a good starting point for anyone who wants to build strength safely: chair-based movements, gentle resistance work, walking in short intervals. But for many older adults, group programs offer something a living-room routine can’t: a reason to show up, and people to show up for.
Romo has led the class for two years. Before her, Josie Turner, now 80, taught the routine she developed years ago in California. Turner stepped back when she felt it was time. “I love doing it,” Turner says, “but I knew when I needed to stop.”
The class meets from 10 to 11 a.m., using resistance bands, light dumbbells and chairs for balance. Participants are deeply committed. When Valerio misses a session, she’s upset and eager to return.
While fitness is central, the class offers something equally important: social connection. After exercising, many participants stay for lunch, talking, laughing and checking in on one another.
For Valerio, who lives alone, those connections matter. Her faith anchors her daily life. She prays the rosary, remains active in the Sacred Heart League and once taught religious education to children preparing for First Communion.
The Taos County Senior Center serves as a hub for seniors across the region, offering meals, transportation, health programs and social activities. Group fitness programs like Romo’s provide not only physical benefits but a sense of belonging, especially important in rural com-

munities where isolation can be common.
For the women in the fitness class, staying active is practical — but it’s also joyful. It looks like weights and bands, yes, but it also looks like calling each other by name, welcoming newcomers and celebrating milestones together.
That’s what the Taos County Senior Center provides — not just a schedule of activities, but a community. The center, at 200 Lovato Place, is open 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday and offers meals, transportation and programming designed to support adults 60 and older. It is part of Taos County’s senior services network, which also includes centers in Questa, Chamisal and Amalia.
Valerio arrives at the center with the help of her senior companion, Vivan Mondragon, ensuring she never misses class when transportation is the only barrier.
At 105, Valerio doesn’t set out to be an example. She simply lives as she always has — with purpose, movement and connection.
As class ends and the group prepares for lunch, Valerio gathers her weights and smiles. Asked again about her secret to longevity, she repeats the advice that has carried her through more than a century.
“Always move,” she says.

Complementary health care — including holistic alternatives, chiropractic services, oriental medicine, massage and massage therapy, skin care, meditation, and energy healing — is often best used in conjunction with Western medicine. Different fields of complementary medicine have different certification processes, and some disciplines (such as reiki) are not licensed by the state. Due diligence on the part of the patient is recommended. Verify a health care provider’s credentials to the best of your ability. A good place to start is the State of New Mexico Regulation and Licensing Department website at verification.rld.state.nm.us.
