Art is everywhere in Taos. Most visitors want to know where to see the art that everyone is always talking about. Some artworks not to be missed: 1. Georgia O’Keeffe at the Blake Hotel People frequently ask if there is any place to see Georgia O’Keeffe paintings in Taos, now there is. The O’Keeffe painting “Hills and Mesa to the West” (oil on canvas, 19” x 36” 1945) is on view in the lobby of the Blake Hotel at Taos Ski Valley. This painting of rolling hills radiates all the colors in the world in one place. In one of the hallways of the hotel a suite of 10 O’Keeffe prints created in 1968 also hangs. She selected these to be printed in an edition of 300, the only prints O’Keeffe ever allowed made of her work.

2. “Regulus” sculpture at Millicent Rogers Museum On the grounds of the Millicent Rogers Museum stands the 12-foot-tall sculpture “Regulus,” created by Wilson Crawford circa. 1990 based on Roger’s “star” pin design, which was created sometime between 1947-1953. It’s been the most popular of all of her sterling silver pins still made to this day and is always available in the museum gift shop. Regulus is the name of the brightest star in the constellation of Leo, which is often seen accompanying Venus in the night sky. If you can, take the opportunity to see it against the Taos Blue Mountain during twilight. 3. Taos Old County Courthouse Mural Room At one end of this grand hall a rainbow permeates the sky while Moses stands upon tumbling blocks as he rests his left hand upon the stones of the Ten Commandments. For years this imposing fresco mural was the backdrop for the judges’ bench upstairs in the old Taos County Courthouse on Taos Plaza. Today, the room is used for various Taos functions and includes 10 murals painted in 1934 by Emil Bisttram, Ward Lockwood and Bert Phillips with the most magnificent and largest of all created by Victor Higgins. Stand at the back of the room and see the entire group imposingly before you.

4. Agnes Martin Gallery at the Harwood Museum The Agnes Martin Gallery at the Harwood Museum of Art is an octagonal meditation chamber featuring seven paintings specifically created for this space. 5. Larry Bell “Fractions” at Holy Cross Hospital Two of the extraordinary “Fraction” drawings by Larry Bell are located in the hallway towards the day surgery center at Holy Cross Hospital. This pair of 10-inch square paintings hanging one above the other are two of the best from this series. The richness of a bubblegum pink permeating through splashes of black with veins of turquoise or a golden green hue, these are heavenly and inspiring painters paintings. You may have on occasion noticed that throughout the hallways of the Taos hospital hang more than 100 works of donated art. 6. Ted Egri “Flight of Wind” sculpture at the Taos County Administrative-Judicial Complex The late, great early modern artist’s monumental steel sculpture was installed in April 2017 in front of the Taos County Administrative-Judicial Complex on the corner of Paseo del Pueblo Sur and Albright Street. He experimented with twisted metal in which he found symbolism and fascination. In this large metal sculpture is the suggestion of the graceful shapes that resemble Taos’ Pueblo Peak.

She was Mabel Gansen Evans Dodge Sterne Luhan – salon hostess, art patroness, writer and self-appointed savior of humanity. She was a woman of profound contradictions. She was generous. She was petty, domineering and endearing. Today as you approach the house of Mabel Dodge Luhan (now an historic inn and conference center), it’s easy to see why some of the greatest minds of the 20th century were inspired here. Situated at the end of a quiet road not far from the center of town off Kit Carson Road, the house appears much as it did in the days when Mabel admired her views of the sacred Taos Mountain from the third-story solarium. One can only imagine the tantalizing conversations that must have taken place within these walls. After all, Georgia O’Keeffe stayed here. So did D.H. THE COUSESHARP HISTORIC SITE The home of 20th century artist Eanger Irving Couse and his family and studios of Couse and Joseph Henry Sharp — members of the Taos Society of Artists (TSA) who were instrumental in creating the cultural fabric of Taos as we know it today. THE MILLICENT ROGERS MUSEUM The museum was established as a memorial to Millicent Rogers whose inspiration, patronage and collections form the cores of its holdings. Rogers (19021953) was the granddaughter of Henry Huttleston Rogers, one of the founders of the Standard Oil Company. At her homes in New York, Virginia, Italy and elsewhere, she entertained the great and splendid from American industrialists to European nobility. She was the fashionista of her day. In her later years, she visited and eventually settled in Taos. Here, she became close friends with many of the founding members of the Taos Society of Artists and passionately supported Native American artists. Her namesake museum houses 15 galleries featuring the heritage of the Southwest, including jewelry, paintings, textiles and pottery, such as the family collection of heralded potter Maria Martinez. The Taos art collector and philanthropist ensured his legacy will continue long after his death. In addition to Millicent Rogers, Funk, who died last March at age 87, also gave some of his extensive art collection to the Harwood Museum of Art and the Taos Community Foundation. Funk was born in Olney, Illinois. He moved to Las Vegas, New Mexico in 1931 where his father, Lozier R. Funk, was the business manager of what was then called Normal University, now called Highlands University.
Funk helped establish the Fall Festival of Arts held each year in September and started the show called “Taos Invites Taos.” He was on this committee for 17 years. He was president of the Taos Art Association for five years during the building of the community auditorium. He was selected Man of the Year by the Chamber of Commerce. The collection at Millicent Rogers Museum will be on display beginning in March 2019.

In 1939, the family moved to Taos where he remained until completion of the 10th grade. Upon college graduation, he spent two years in the military. In 1953, he entered into a partnership with his father in a chain of 5 and 10 stores in Northern New Mexico. He later became the owner of the Don Fernando Curio & Gift Shop and operated the same until its sale in 1987.
A run at TSV, ‘El Funko,’ was named after the longtime friend of the ski area founder Ernie Blake, according to the ski valley’s website. The name’s ‘a playful jab at Funk’s ski ability. Or lack thereof.

Max Killinger is celebrating his 50th year at Taos Ski Valley. Since coming to Taos in 1967, he has been on the mountain every year teaching skiing on powder days, during droughts, in 30-below-zero Januaries and on sunny April mornings. He, lodge owner Jean Mayer and Jean’s brother, Dadou, are the senior instructors on the mountain. Killinger’s students are loyal. Some have been requesting him for decades. He is loyal to them, too. He is still in contact with Helga Tarver, a 98year-old former student. He took her skiing on super-expert Al’s Run when she was 90. “Max was always the best ski instructor we had,” said Chris Stagg, TSV vice president and TSV co-founder Ernie Blake’s son-in-law. “He is a

great skier, passionate about his students. He is also very loud. Riding the lift, you can hear Max teaching in his German accent.”

Killinger teaches ski week classes: six half-days of intense instruction, not more than seven students at a time, in any weather and all snow conditions. He also gives private lessons. These days, most of his students are advanced.
Born in 1934, Killinger learned the sport in Germany on skis made of ash wood in the days before chair lifts. He remembers his father, who was an avid skier, coming home in 1942 on furlough from the German army and taking him skiing in the Bavarian mountains.
He shares up-to-date skiing techniques with his classes as well as giving them practical advice. Max said the most important thing he teaches is having fun while learning. “Skiing is being out in nature,” he said. He said that when he sees contemporary skiers,

, Killinger read a book about Australia called “The Golden Boomerang.” That country had a labor shortage and the book was a promotion to encourage immigrants. He talked seven friends into going with him, including his future wife, Theresa Merhringer, who sailed on the same boat, and Eberhard (Hardy) Langer, still his close friend and neighbor in Arroyo Seco. “We had not a clue of English when we arrived in Australia,” he said. He stayed there three-and-a-half years working in a Volkswagon plant ,with time out for a bicycle sabbatical in New Zealand with Langer. In the winter, he and Theresa managed the Mt. Hotham ski area, and in summer he was also a tool and diemaker. In 1964, Killinger and his future wife took a Dutch boat from Sydney to Florida. After saving enough money to buy a Volkswagen bus, they toured the United States, Canada and Mexico for eight months, bypassing Taos but seeing southern Colorado.
The couple returned to Germany to be married, but Killinger wasn’t happy in his native country: “I had to work a whole week to have money to spend the weekend skiing.” They returned to the United States where he worked as a tool and die maker in Chicago, and she was a bookkeeper in the same company. Langer arrived at Taos Ski Valley first. Killinger said Langer found out that a diesel mechanic was needed at TSV since Blake’s son, Mickey, had joined the National Guard. Mickey’s training was deferred, “then they didn’t know what to do with Hardy, so he became a ski instructor.”
Killinger’s first week in Taos was blessed with powder snow. He and Ernie Blake were both in Jean Mayer’s class, “so we must have been pretty good.” He asked Blake for a job teaching skiing, who replied, “No.” He already had eight starving instructors.
In 1967, the Killingers took the train to Raton and spent a ski week at Taos, staying at the Thunderbird Lodge. He said the cost was $192 per week for a dorm room, three meals a day, lessons and lift tickets. Killinger was in shape and well prepared. He said that he was so competitive with Langer that after work each day in Chicago, he got ready for his trip to the Taos mountains by climbing the stairs of a downtown skyscraper.

But Blake announced in all the lodges that he would take the guests to hike and ski Kachina Peak. “Everybody followed him” and some didn’t get down the mountain until 6 p.m., with the ski patrol. Killinger kept up with Blake and was offered a ski instructor job while they stood at the top of the mountain “huffing and puffing.” He returned the following winter to teach and also to run the sewage plant. THE KILLINGER FAMILY Max Killinger grew up in the city of Munich, but his ancestors were Bavarian farmers. He was named after his father, Maximilian Joseph Killinger. His fathers’s grandparents raised 10 children on a 13-acre farm.

Max’s father was a baker before he was drafted into the German army in 1939. He was sent to France, Poland, then Russia. In 1943, he contracted malaria while stationed on the Black Sea. Since he never fully recovered, he was made a military policeman.

“That is not the best thing to be when you are captured by the Russians,” said his son. He was sent to Russian coal mines where he remained even after World War II ended and died of an infection in 1947. Max’s mother, Barbara Friegel, had six brothers and sisters. His grandmother came from a prominent family that thought she had married below her station. When her husband died, the grandmother’s family refused to support her.

It was only after she tried to drown herself and her children in the river Zusam that her family took care of her. Max said his “mother was a wonderful woman, but not a very strong woman.”
Killinger said that in those years, Blake paid the lodges $1 per day to feed his instructors three meals a day.
“He was a very social man. He invited everyone to his crummy apartment,” said Killinger.
At first, the Killingers lived in separate dorms, but Blake finally settled them in the Chalet Alpina, a cabin under the lift. There they had a dog, Poco, that Blake accused of defecating on the beginners’ hill. “He made such a fuss out of the dog!”
When Blake was ill at the end of his life, Killinger visited often. They talked of Blake’s German homeland and of his experiences in the U.S. Army during World War II. They spoke in English.
Killinger said of Blake, “For me, he was a demigod, and he acted like one, too.” He was hard on his new ski instructor. Killinger told Wendy Blake, “If your father is down on me, I am not staying.” Wendy told her father and Blake stopped. She told Killinger, “Most people don’t understand his sense of humor.” The Killingers saved $9,000. With $4,000 they bought 4 acres on the Rim Road near Arroyo Seco. He used the rest to buy materials for the house he built by hand. He is still a full-time woodworker during the summer. As the years passed, the Blakes added more lifts, more trails and more ski teachers. Killinger became a senior instructor. Blake was fond of Killinger, and often invited him to his modest home above the ski shop.
“We had different dialects. He spoke a proper German. I speak the Bavarian dialect,” said Killinger. Theresa died in a ski accident in 1998. Killinger married ski instructor and artist Mary Doolittle Poole in 2002. Her husband, Hank Poole, developer of the Inn at Snakedance, had died in the same year as Theresa. They teach skiing each winter. During the summer when they are not traveling to Europe or local Pueblo ruins, she paints, and he fulfills his woodworking commissions. At 84, Killinger skis daily in the winter, and hikes with his dogs in the off-season. He shows no signs of slowing down. Robin Martin has been a ski student of Killinger’s for at least 48 years, since she was a young teenager.
In 1941, Adolf Hitler sent urban children to the country to learn rural ways and avoid the Allied bombs that were falling on the cities. Max was sent to a Deutsches Jungvolk (German youth) camp in the southern Bavarian Alps: a repurposed country inn, where the children had classes in the morning and pre-war games in the afternoon. Hitler “took us through the ringer,” Max said. He added that he was very homesick, and his mother missed him terribly. She asked the authorities if he could return home and was told, “You can’t have him. He belongs to Adolf Hitler.” In what Max calls “an unspeakable act of bravery” for a timid woman, his mother traveled to his school, where he was living in a second-story room with three other boys. She threw a pebble up to the window to alert him; he tied two sheets together and climbed down to freedom. They escaped by taking the train to Munich and on to Wertingen, the town where his mother had been born; there they spent the rest of the war. “We were afraid of being caught, but Hitler had other things to do.” Max supported his mother and sister during his father’s captivity. He made 40 marks a month, giving 35 to his mother. He became an apprentice tool and die maker at age 14. He worked 48 hours a week, including a day of trade school where he studied geometry, calculus, physics, chemistry and technical drawing. In 1960, he left Germany for Australia, and eventually the United States. His sister and mother remained in Munich and have since passed away. But he and his wife, Mary, still travel to Bavaria to visit relatives. Today he proudly displays photos of his Bavarian ancestors on the walls of his handmade adobe home.

Take a break from skiing, snowshoeing, hiking, museum hopping and well, working so hard at having fun here in the Land of Enchantment for another “Why Taos now” experience. Those mountain vistas, cool forests and scintillating desertscapes can also be rendered in full living color or black-and-white paint and graphite at Art ’n’ a Glass, a night of beginning painting with a pint or glass of spirits at your side, for anyone and everyone, no art experience is required. It’s a kicked back and relaxing evening at the KTAOS Solar Center, 9 State Road 150, north of El Prado on the road to Taos Ski Valley. This art social get-together happens every Wednesday at 6 p.m. Tickets are $20, and includes canvas, paint, brushes and extended Happy Hour pricing, with hand-selected special wines weekly. Local guest artists and their examples are provided as a guide and/or for inspiration. This is just an introduction, just the basics. Art ’n’ a Glass was the brainchild of Taos photographer and painter Jim Cox, which moved its venue to KTAOS from El Monte Sagrado Resort & Spa this year. Solar Center Venue Manager Brent Plaster has taken over the reins, although Cox is still involved. Plaster aims to get an artist to commit to host two or three times in a row for some consistency. This not only benefits the participants, he said, but helps introduce local artists and galleries to the public. “This approach gives a deeper glimpse not only into painting, but into the artists themselves,” he added. and found the atmosphere congenial and relaxing for all concerned. “It’s a lot of fun,” Feldman said. “This is good because as you grow older, you’re more self-conscious about not being good enough, so this is a great way to get over that.” The look and vibe of Art ’n’ a Glass gets you up close and personal with professional painters. “I wasn’t exactly sure of what to expect,” said guest artist Melody Romancito, “But it was way fun. There were a lot of people who were regulars and a lot of visitors, people just passing through town, who came out.”
It’s a fun, unique social experience painting alongside your friends (or maybe making new friends) with a glass of wine and a killer view of the mountains. Templates are provided for people who may be timid about getting started. They are index board, cut-out shapes so you can trace the outlines. “It gives you a place to start. A lot of people are very timid. They’re afraid to mess up the canvas or make a mistake,” Romancito said. Romancito brought some canvases to give the painters-to-be an idea of what her work is like and encouraged them to memorialize the Taos they love in a painting.
Cox introduced Art ’n’ a Glass five years ago “because most people who come to Taos want to take something home with them.” People are sometimes so stressed out on vacation, Cox said. He recalled one chief executive officer from Los Angeles who said the art evening was the best thing of his whole trip. He complained that he came to Taos to relax and all he ended up doing was working – all the rafting and hiking, etc. “He said, ‘I’m working my butt off!’ “I’ve had a lot of people who are just driving through from New York, California and Arizona. I think it’s the most successful class we have in Taos,” Cox said. A wide range of ages attends, he added, remembering an 8-year-old boy he taught during a summer class. “He was so good. He did the (Río Grande) Gorge template, and then he looked up at me and said, ‘OK! I got it!’ There are 16 stations set up, but the room can hold up to 20 people. It’s a first come, first sit event. Instead of investigating potential colleges in the state’s capitol, they decided to stay in Taos to make a living. “They just fell in love with the whole environment that is Taos,” says company vice president Jay Flint. “They just felt it was for them.” O V E R L A N D S H E E P S K I N ' S TA O S F L A G S H I P S T O R E I S C E L E B R AT I N G I T S 4 5 T H Y E A R .
Maybe it was the mountain’s way of calling them back. In 1973, when Jim Leahy and his fiancée passed through Taos on their way to Santa Fe, they had to return to retrieve the gas cap they accidentally left on their bumper.

Leahy and soonto-be wife Leslie designed the coats with pencil and paper, sketching them by hand, cutting the patterns and stitching them by hand in their van. “They’d make two or three coats, sell them, make two or three more, sell them and the business just kept growing,” Flint said. Jim Leahy’s business was growing so fast that his father Jerry left his job in Iowa as a bank examiner to help. His mother Marge also stepped in. Jim’s brother Roger graduated from college and moved from California to Taos as the family-run business took off.
In 1975 they opened another store in Omaha. Jerry and Marge toured the Rocky Mountains and opened more stores and did it without doing any demographic research, according to Flint. “They just made it happen,” he said. In the early 1980s, before there was internet and before home desktop computers were the norm, the mail-order catalog became a major player. “They did everything themselves,” Flint explained. “They did the photography, the layout and hired a printer.” The catalog business took off. Roger returned to his hometown roots in Fairfield, Iowa, and ran the catalog business from there. They eventually separated the two companies and Roger and his parents ran one half while Jim had the factory and production in Taos. Now run from the headquarters in Iowa, the company today remains a family-owned business, employing more than 200 people mostly in its Rocky Mountain and Midwest locations.

In 1973, 19-year-old Jim Leahy moved to Taos with a dream of designing and making sheepskin coats. In tow he had a sewing machine and a bale of sheepskins. His beautiful, functional and rugged Western creations — including coats, slippers, hats and mittens all cut and stitched by hand — were soon in demand and alongside other Taos artisans, the business became Overland Sheepskin Company.
“They based this whole business for 45 years on putting quality out there, charge a reasonable price and it will work, and it has worked,” said Flint, who’s been with the company for more than 30 years.

FRANK MORGAN TAOS JAZZ FESTIVAL Nov. 15-17 Bebop is a type of jazz originating in the 1940s and characterized by complex harmony and rhythms. It is associated particularly with Charlie Parker, Thelonious Monk and Dizzy Gillespie. Another legendary bebop jazz performer was Frank Morgan, albeit he often flew under the radar. Morgan came to Taos from Minneapolis in 2000 to play a twonight gig. He loved it here, felt like he was left alone to just be himself.
He lived in Taos for five years, until illness forced him to move back to Minneapolis to spend the last two years of his life with family. While in Taos, he was a regular performer at the Taos Inn. He suffered a stroke and developed cancer, but that didn’t slow him down much; he toured Europe until the last month of his life in 2007. In his honor and to keep his sound alive, the Taos Jazz Bebop Society presents the 4th annual Frank Morgan Taos Jazz
Festival. This popular jazz event features Morgan’s protégé, alto saxophonist and singer-songwriter Grace Kelly (the Grace Kelly Quartet).

Also in town will be George Cables, Doug Lawrence and Pete Amahl. Cables helped define modern mainstream jazz piano of the 1980s and ‘90s. Saxophonist Lawrence and drummer Amahl are two of New Mexico’s hottest, most in-demand jazzmen.

When guests return to Taos Ski Valley this winter, they will find some major renovations that have changed the resort for the better. Building on three years of updates and new construction, this summer a new high-speed quad lift was installed at the base area and penthouses were added to The Blake. Up higher in the Kachina Basin, the Phoenix Grill and The Bavarian Restaurant both received a major overhaul. On the Plaza, Rhoda’s got a facelift, too, as did the Whistlestop Café at the base of Lift No. 6 (close to Lift No. 2). These improvements complement recent changes, such as the creation of a new stateof-the-art Children’s Center. The changes help burnish the reputation of TSV as a place that respects its roots and at the same time is moving forward with updated technology. TSV has a well-deserved reputation as a steep mountain with some thrilling runs, but it is also enhancing the experience for new skiers with additions like that of a “gondolita” to connect the beginner’s area with the base. As a bonus, there’s a new Donut Shack at the top of the gondolita. More skiers and boarders are likely to make the trip to Taos this year because for the first time, the Ikon Pass includes Taos Ski Valley.
HIGH-SPEED QUAD This summer, the old Lift 1 was dismantled by helicopter creating quite the spectacle at the base area. For a full day, the helicopter removed the old infrastructure. The next day, the helicopter carried buckets of concrete to pour footers for the new lift towers. “It’s a little sad to see the last towers pulled out. Chair 1 had been there since 1989,” said Daniel Aguilar, who has worked for TSV for more than 30 years and was watching the process. “We are ready for the new wave. We are all excited about this new detachable chair that is going to serve our guests well.” He explains that with the new lift, when a chair comes to the top or bottom terminal, it detaches from the cable, so loading and unloading is slower. When skiers are loaded, the chair attaches to the cable and begins moving at much higher speed. “That is what most of our neighboring ski areas in Colorado have gone to. I don’t think it is the last detachable lift we are going to see in Taos, but is definitely the first,” said Aguilar. “This will help keep things moving, reducing the already short lift lines even more.” The new lift will get skiers up the mountain faster and higher than before.

Up the hill there are changes happening, too. The Bavarian Restaurant that was acquired by Taos Ski Valley in 2014 has undergone a substantial renovation. The renovations provide additional seating capacity as well as some more efficiency in the kitchen space. The larger deck makes for an even better outdoor dining experience in all seasons. The Phoenix is also getting a complete overhaul. The goal is to create a space that can host weddings and banquets in the summertime as well as serving hungry people during the ski season.
BECOMING BETTER of Taos announced in October that the airport begins flight service to and from Dallas-Love Field and Austin-Bergstrom International Airports. Taos Air will begin flying customers Dec. 20, just in time for the 2018-19 ski season. One of the partners in getting the air services, Taos Ski Valley, purchased a 30-seat passenger Dornier 328 jet and has also entered into a management agreement with Ultimate Jet Charters to fly the plane in and out of Taos for the one hour, 48minute flights. Taos Ski Valley will offer complimentary ground shuttle rides to and from The Blake at Taos Ski Valley for those using Taos Air. Flights will continue to March of 2019 and will leave once a day to and from each destination every Thursday, Saturday and Sunday or holiday Monday. IKON PASS The Ikon Pass offers an impressive list of 36 resorts in the U.S. and Canada. For the first time, TSV is among the Rocky Mountain destinations and joins resorts such as Aspen-Snowmass, Steamboat, Winter Park and Copper Mountain in Colorado.
All the upgrades to TSV are done in a way that respects the long history of the resort since it was established by Ernie and Rhoda Blake in 1954. While adding to the local economy, the resort is also focused on reducing its environmental impact, improving the recycling program and reducing food waste. Over the summer, TSV worked with U.S. Forest Service and Nature Conservancy to develop more sustainable forest and river ecosystems. “Taos Ski Valley is undergoing a very impressive renovation endeavor. The projects that are taking place right now are massive and plentiful, but we want people to know that our goal is truly to become better, not bigger. We have a very special, independent ski resort and those are becoming fewer and fewer by the year. SIPAPU DEVELOPMENT PLAN ENVISIONS ENCHANCED WINTER, SUMMER ACTIVITIES BY

An expansion plan for Sipapú Ski and Summer Resort in Vadito, New Mexico percolated in Bruce Bolander’s mind back in 1990. Bolander’s vision, the son of the resort’s founders Lloyd and Olive Bolander, is on the path to becoming a reality. John Paul Bradley, Sipapú’s mountain manager, held informal gatherings at the resort beginning last fall where he shared Sipapú’s Master Development Plan. Bradley introduced what “we would like to do in Sipapú.” The vision for the future of the resort — it is the oldest in New Mexico having opened in 1952 — stems from it being the fastest-growing and still most affordable ski area ($45 per day adult ski passes) in the state. User numbers, he said, have been consistently increasing. Sipapú experienced its busiest day ever last winter hosting 1,160 people.
Known for its familyfriendly activities and atmosphere, elbow room to ski and board, and a great place for beginners to learn how to tackle the slopes, the plan keeps that focus intact. Winter improvements include adding 1,200 acres to the current 400 acres (215 are skiable), with 299 acres (196 skiable) to be cleared for 51 new, mostly intermediate runs plus 17 acres of glade terrain for a grand total of 95 trails. Three new high-speed lifts and two magic carpets will be added. The relocation of the current main lift will become a “chondola,” a combined chairlift and gondola on the same line, which will go to an added beginner’s learning area at the top.

apex; and a mountain top year-round, closed-loop alpine coaster ride. More parking and snow-making capabilities are also part of the future. A master development plan for the area was submitted to the U.S. Forest Service in 2010 and accepted. That plan was amended (and resubmitted) to include some ideas that came later such as the alpine coaster and tubing areas to name just a couple. A start date can’t be given until the USFS and the public gives the OK to move forward, which Bradley anticipates to be within the next few years and will take up to approximately 10 years, if not longer. He said the EIS alone will take a couple of years to complete.
“That should lessen congestion at the bottom beginner’s area and around the restaurant,” Bradley explained. “And with the new trails, even on our busiest day our skiers will have even more elbow room.”
“In a perfect world,” Briner said, “the plan will be approved in the fall of 2021. It will take a year or two to construct the new lifts. The thought is to clear trees in the winter when/if approved because it’s easier to move the timber and creates less impact on the environment.”
Other additions include a mountain-top restaurant; a new winter and summer tubing area (using an artificial snow surface in the summer); a zone at the top for another disc golf course; a zipline tour; mountain biking trails; a looping hiking trail at the top and a hiking trail from the bottom to the
In the planning stages for infrastructure include a new 34-unit lodge/hotel to replace the rooms destroyed in a fire two years ago. Bradley says there is no concrete timeline for its construction and they had hoped to begin building last spring. A lean winter, however, delayed that project.
A total cost for the on-the-mountain improvements is not yet available, but Bradley estimates it to be around 40 million. “One high-speed chairlift alone is about 6 to 7 million,” he said. Bruce Bolander and his wife Winona ran Sipapú through the winter of 2000. James Coleman of Mountain Capital Partners then bought the resort. He is the primary investor and managing partner of Sipapú and Parajito Mountain Ski Area. The Bolanders are still Sipapú partners. In 2014, Colorado’s Purgatory at Durango Mountain Resort and Arizona Snowbowl announced an agreement to sell 100 percent of their respective ski areas to Coleman, making it the largest mountain collective in the Southwest. Other MCP resorts include Hesperis Ski Area near Durango and Nordic Valley Resort near Eden, Utah. So long as Mother Nature cooperates, opening day is Nov. 17, 9 a.m.-4 p.m. making Sipapú, once again, the first resort in New Mexico to open for the season. Along with downhill skiing and boarding, Sipapú offers snowballing, ski biking, Telemark skiing, a snow castle, ski school programs and terrain parks. Sledding and tubing are not permitted at Sipapú, however there are a couple of hills within a few minutes of the resort. Sleds are available at the gift shop for purchase. CONTINUED P.114

WINTER HIKING/ SNOWSHOEING For spectacular snow-covered mountain views and the chance to see wildlife, nothing beats winter hiking in Taos. And if you choose some of the lesser-known hikes, you may be out on the trail in glorious silence and solitude.
TRAILS OFF THE BEATEN PATH Some snow – Comales Canyon Trail Southeast of town, several hikes start along State Road 518. These trails are at lower elevation than those near the Taos Ski Valley, but expect some snow. About 20 miles from the center of town, Comales follows a creek up a canyon lined with rock walls. The path passes through meadows on a moderate climb and meets up with a network of other trails at about the 4-mile mark. There are spectacular views of Picuris and Gallegos Peaks. Even if you don’t go all the way to the top, you will

see some beautiful meadows and maybe some wildlife, such as elk and deer. Directions: From Taos Plaza, drive south just over 3 miles on Paseo del Pueblo. Turn left at State Road 518 and go about 17 miles. Drive past the Comales Campground on your left and look for the trailhead to the right. Less snow – La Vista Verde West of town, out on the flat mesa, many hikes start at or follow the Río Grande. The trailhead for La Vista Verde is tucked up on a shelf between the Río Grande and the mesa rim above. This trail is an easy 2.5-mile roundtrip to an overlook above the Río Grande. Look for the Spanish crosses on the big boulders near the trail and the petroglyphs off the trail. DIRECTIONS: From Taos Plaza, go north 4 miles on Paseo del Pueblo to the intersection of US64 and the Ski Valley Road. Turn left at the traffic signal and drive west 7 miles to the Río Grande Gorge Bridge. Shortly after the bridge, turn left on West
Rim Road and drive 8 miles to the stop sign. Go left toward Pilar. Follow the road as it turns to dirt and descend the switchbacks until you see La Vista Verde trailhead to the left. An alternate approach is to drive south from Taos Plaza on Paseo del Pueblo/ US 68 for 17 miles to Pilar. Turn north on State Road 570 and head toward the Taos Junction Bridge. Cross the bridge and go up the switchbacks to the trailhead on your right.
TAOS SNOWSHOE ADVENTURES Taos Snowshoe Adventures leads tours throughout the Carson National Forest. A favorite trek is up to Williams Lake, nestled in an alpine basin below New Mexico’s highest point, Wheeler Peak. Taos Snowshoe’s most popular snowshoe tour is described as a 4-hour winter adventure starting at $69 for adults and $59 for children ages 8-12. For the uninitiated, there’s a 2.5-hour tour for beginners starting at $49 for adults and $39 for kids under 12. The tour is touted as a quick winter jaunt,

NORTHSIDE AT TAOS SKI VALLEY Northside at Taos Ski Valley is also available for snowshoeing. A $5 day pass can be purchased in Taos Ski valley at the Chamber Visitor Center, Taos Sports at the base of Lift 1, Columbine Inn and Conference Center, Edelweiss Lodge and Spa and The Bavarian. Snowshoe up Bull of the Woods Trail from the base area parking to the Long Canyon intersection. This is a more vertical trail than the Williams Lake route. Cross the creek to the right to access Northside. Turn left up Bullof-the-Woods Road and continue up BOTW Road or Gold Camp Trail. This is a short loop going up to Jean’s Meadow and back down either direction. To get in a 1-mile longer loop, add Sawmill Trail (up or down). Another fun route extension is going up Frazer Mountain Road to Bird Eye View and back down. The rhythm of gliding along on the snow adds a pleasant dimension to the experience of being in a Northern New Mexico forest. If you’ve always wanted to try cross-country skiing, also known as Nordic skiing, you have several options near Taos where you can learn how and also go out on your own in the forest. Resorts and lessons: Enchanted Forest is located outside of Red River on Carson National Forest land and was established over 30 years ago. It offers more than 22 miles of trails. Some of them are gentle slopes, such as Power Puff, and others are more challenging, such as Face Flop Drop. There is also a warming yurt accessed by the March Hare Trail. From Enchanted Forest, both Wheeler Peak and Gold Hill can be seen. At the Angel Fire Resort Nordic Center, there are opportunities for cross country-skiing, snowshoeing and sledding. More than 50 miles of groomed trails roll along the Moreno Valley canyons of spruce and pine trees, beginning at 8,600 feet in elevation. On your own: About 30 minutes from Taos Plaza off State Road 518, the Amole Canyon area has a series of loops that are open for cross-country skiing. There are several beginner trails with gentle grades and some are groomed periodically. Look for the blue diamonds that mark the trails. There are courses that vary from 1 mile to more than 6 miles, and some have more challenging grades for experienced skiers.

Of course, if you can find a hill on your own, and you have access to a sled or a tube, you can hone your coasting skills on your own time. THE POLAR COASTER Featuring five lanes of fun, Angel Fire Resort’s Polar Coaster is one of the best tubing destinations in the southern Rockies. U.S. HILL & AGUA PIEDRA CAMPGROUND There are lots of hills to sled and tube down in the area, but one of the best non-resort, public-access spots in Northern New Mexico can be found in Carson National Forest, off State Road 518. U.S. Hill is a popular spot with locals, but as you might expect, it’s a bring-your-own tube or sled experience. And getting to the top requires your own two feet. Also close by is a steep spot at the Agua Piedra Campground (Córdova Canyon) off Forest Road 708 in Vadito. Nearby Sipapu Ski and Summer Resort does not permit sledding or tubing, but sells sleds and saucers in its gift shop, or you can buy them in Taos at Walmart and Ace Hardware before you head out.

THE ENCHANTED CIRCLE a magic loop
It’s no accident that New Mexico has long been known as The Land of Enchantment. It’s only fitting, then, that this designated scenic byway be called the Enchanted Circle. Explore the 83-mile loop through mountains, valleys, mesa and national forest — all unique to Northern New Mexico. The Enchanted Circle is centered around Wheeler Peak, the highest point in the state at 13,159 feet. The loop includes Taos, Questa, Red River, Eagle Nest, Angel Fire and villages in between including the ghost town called Elizabethtown. From Taos, you can begin by traveling north to Questa on State Road 522, then take State Road 38 to Red River, Eagle Nest and Angel Fire and then return to Taos through Taos Canyon on U.S. Highway 64 — or begin the circle headed toward Angel Fire. And even if you don’t ski or board, a visit to Taos Ski Valley on State Road 150 with a stop in Arroyo Seco along the way is a mini-sidetrack you won’t regret. THE PUEBLO New Mexico has a long and storied history. Only becoming a state in 1912, its association with the United States is but a blip in the timeline of this enchanted land. In fact, prior to annexation of New Mexico by the U.S. in 1846, the area was “ruled” for nearly 300 years by Spain and then Mexico. But going even further back, let’s say more than 1,000 years, the Red Willow people of Taos Pueblo have called this place at the base of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains home. The main part of the present buildings in the Pueblo’s plaza look much the same when the Spanish first arrived in Northern New Mexico in 1540. The fact that people still live in the large dwelling makes it the oldest continuously inhabited community in the United States. The land base is 99,000 acres with an elevation of 7,200 feet at the village.

In 1992, Taos Pueblo was admitted to the Heritage Society as one of the most significant historical cultural landmarks in the world making it a World Heritage Site by UNESCO and a National Historic Landmark— alongside other notable sites such as the Taj Mahal and the Grand Canyon. It is the only Native American community with both designations. Taos Pueblo’s rich cultural history makes for a memorable visit and is just a mile north of the town of Taos off Paseo del Pueblo Norte. It is no surprise that tradition and heritage are the cornerstones of activities in all seasons at Taos Pueblo. From private rites of Pueblo members to more public traditions, such as the Christmas Eve procession, there is always a sense of history that predates any colonial associations with this great land. For most visitors, the main winter attractions at Taos Pueblo are the ceremonial holiday traditions. Unchanged and unmatched in wonder and drama, Taos Pueblo holds the Procession of the Virgin Mary celebration where friends, relatives and visitors gather in the Pueblo Plaza around towering luminarias in anticipation of the annual tradition. The celebration begins on Christmas Eve around sunset after the 4 p.m. vespers and Communion at San Geronimo Chapel.
The scent of burning ocote wood permeates the dark winter air like incense. Gunshots are heard, as Pueblo men fire hunting rifles toward the stars as part of the tradition of welcoming La Nocha Buena (the good night) and La Navidad (Christmas, the birth of Christ). Once the riflemen signal the birth of Christ, they part the crowd to allow passage for the procession featuring a statue of the Virgin Mary hoisted high upon a dais. Accompanying the procession are Pueblo drummers, dancers and female singers — singing in English and Tiwa (the native language of the Red Willow people) — as Mary is returned to the church. Then on Christmas Day, visitors are invited to watch the year’s chosen symbolic Deer or Matachinas Dance-Drama around 1 p.m. The meaning behind the dances is consecrated among the Pueblo people, and it’s considered impolite to inquire about it. It is hoped that witnesses take away a positive, inspired feeling and a lasting memory in one’s mind and heart as opposed to images. Because these are ceremonies, appropriate behavior is appreciated. For more celebration, the Turtle Dance is held on Jan. 1, typically at dawn. The dance marks the beginning of a new year. As the date approaches, call Taos Pueblo at (575) 758-1028 for exact times. All of these events are offered free to visitors. All that is asked is that there be no cameras, cell phones or any recording devices. Be sure to come early, and make your way around this historic place and the many unique shops held within featuring Native-made handcrafted works from jewelry to pottery to paintings. And if challenging skiing makes your muscles quiver, that’s OK, because TSV has miles of groomed slopes. ‘find what’s real’
Questa is known for its quiet charm, and the beautiful protected lands that surround this tiny village less than 30 miles north of Taos. More and more hidden gems of properties are coming online as rentals. Some of these are tucked in by the Red River that runs behind the village, others are nestled in Cabresto Canyon with horses grazing out the window. These join the small, family-run motels and cabins along the main road that are an easy commute to nearby ski slopes. What the locals know is that access to the Río Grande del Norte National Monument, just west of Questa, never closes. If you wake up to snow; throw your cross-county skis in the car and head for the Rinconada Loop Trail for 6 miles of flat skiing with stunning gorge views. The trail can be entered at any of the campground parking lots and it’s easy to create smaller loops to match your time or stamina. Hiking into the gorge in this Wild Rivers area of the national monument is a favorite Taos outing. On a clear winter day, these steep 1-mile-trails are a pleasure, with the reward of a sparkling river and hidden petroglyphs. On the other side of Questa are trails along State Highway 38 toward the town of Red River. Columbine Canyon is not only a favorite for dry-weath-

er hiking, but is a wonderful place to strap on your snowshoes and trek as near or far as your heart desires. The higher altitude here and thick surrounding pines hold the snowpack well, and a whitetail deer may await you in the meadows. If one stays along the ridge on Cabresto Road and continues into the Carson National Forest, beautiful vistas come into view. This corner of the forest is a favorite for long snowmobile rides. Cabresto Road is not plowed very far beyond the uphill turn-off to the lake. Adventurers should drive as far as possible and continue into the wild on foot, skis or snowmobile. And for another challenge, see if you can find the remains of Midnight Mine. In the heart of town is the San Antonio de Padua church, which was built soon after the permanent village was established in 1842. This historic adobe structure underwent an all-volunteer renovation and was reconsecrated. The church is highlighted during the annual Alumbra de Questa event, as the Christmas craft market culminates with an evening of lights. This year’s event will be held Dec. 15, from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m. in the center of town.

With views that include Touch-Me-Not, Baldy, Wheeler Peak (highest in the state), Eagle Nest Lake and the Moreno Valley, Angel Fire Resort features expansive, long trails — 2,077 feet vertical feet means you can ski for some time before you must get on a lift again. Roy and G.F. LeBus laid the foundation for Angel Fire in 1955 and the resort opened for skiing in the winter of 1966. Many skiers were transported up the mountain that year with a Thiokol Sprite snowcat. The world-famous shovel races had their inception when workers rode grain scoops down the hill at day’s end. The first formal competition was in 1979. The resort has expanded the ski season seven days with an opening date of Dec. 14, closing on March 24. Several of the past winters have seen the best snow later into the season. As long as the powder continues, and the weather cooperates the resort plans to stay open the additional week. Angel Fire Resort was named “America’s Most Affordable Ski Town” by realtor.com and ranked a Top 25 “Best Family Ski Resort in North America” by Dream Vacations Magazine. Do you live to ride? Angel Fire Resort offers New Mexico’s only night skiing and snowboarding on weekends and holidays from 4 to 8 p.m. on the front side of the mountain. Tickets are only $12 with a same-day ticket or $24 without. Terrain includes 50 acres of groomed trails as well as the Night Rider terrain park. Sunset Private Lessons are available during night skiing with special discounted rates for skiers and snowboarders singly or in small groups up to four of similar ability. The additional equipment will allow the resort to open more runs earlier in the season. Angel Fire Resort continues improvements to its full-service Children’s Ski School and on-site daycare for children age 1 and older, known as Snow Bear Camp. Several programs are in place to help
parents get the most of their time on the slopes while their children are actively engaged in learning to ski and board, making new friends and having fun. Last season, Angel Fire Resort opened a new hike-to-access black diamond trail named C-4, in what was previously out-of-bounds territory north of the ski mountain. C-4 is a new 9-acre challenge with a 1,000-foot vertical drop for the expert skier and a must-hit on a bluebird sky powder day. From the top of the Southwest Flyer quad chairlift, skiers and snowboarders will need to hike for 15 minutes to reach this isolated trail, which opens when snow conditions allow. New this year is a boarder cross/skier cross course including high berms, sweeping turns, and small, medium and large rollers. Besides skiing and boarding, Angel Fire Resort also has a large selection of non-ski family activities including a tubing hill (the Polar Coaster complete with a 700-foot surface lift to take the hiking out of tubing), a traditional sledding hill, indoor pools and a hot tub. As conditions permit, the tubing hill is open daily from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tubing is offered in 1-hour blocks and is $25 per person. A full Nordic Center offers rentals and lessons for classic and skate styles and snowshoe hiking. Additionally, in the Village of Angel Fire, horse-drawn sleigh rides, ice fishing and snowmobiling are also available. After all of that adventure, food and drink come to mind. Angel Fire has that covered, too, from pizza

to fine dining, such as Angel Fire Resort’s Elements. Elements, located in the Country Club, has been recognized by Wine Spectator for its world-class wine selection. Shuttles also stop at designated condominium stops. There is a $1 per ride fee (cash only) for each pick-up and drop-off at these stops or for greater convenience, purchase a 12-trip punch card for $10 at The Lodge’s front desk or from the shuttle driver. Free shuttles are also offered from The Lodge to the Country Club during the winter season with a daily shuttle to the Country Club Nordic Center.
