ED SANDOVAL
Ed Sandoval’s cultural heritage clearly defines his style, which he describes as “romantic expressionism”. His paintings have a very vibrant and alive yet spiritual quality, capturing the natural beauty of the region while portraying a simpler era when time moved at a slower pace. The artist has lived and painted in Taos, New Mexico for over 25 years, where he is frequently seen riding through town on
his Arabian horse, Patron, or in his blue ’51 Chevy truck. He can be found daily, painting for the public at his gallery, The Ed Sandoval Gallery. The limited edition poster is available in online at taosfallarts.com, at The Taos Visitor’s Center and at the 2017 Fall Arts Festival’s Open Exhibition, September 22 - October 1 at the Guadalupe Parrish Gym.

VISIONARY ARTIST AWARDS DEMONSTRATING STRENGTH IN IMAGE MAKING The Taos Fall Arts Festival Board is pleased to announce the winners of the prestigious Peter and Madeleine Martin Foundation for the Creative Arts “Visionary Artist” awards: Sarah Hart and Siena Sanderson. The Visionary Artist award is an affirmation for actively working and exhibiting artists who contribute to and invigorate the growth of the living art community in Taos: artists whose works innovate, challenge, and bridge the boundary between the traditional and the cutting-edge. In creating their own paradigm and working with the Taos community, they bring generations together through inventiveness and originality combined with respect for the roots of this historic art colony.

“BIG BROTHERS DON’T SHARE” BY SARAH HART
IN THESE TIMES of instant gratification, I find it important to savor and revel in the process of making art. Screen printing dissects and reassembles my drawings to create something entirely new. It prolongs the creative process, expanding beyond the production of a single drawing. My work examines a balance between the technical discipline of printmaking, and the unaffected imagination and creativity that I believe makes art approachable and sincere. Taos offered me an unconventional entry point to my career in art: event posters. By presenting both information and imagery, they create unique, intimate moments with viewers. These posters also forged bonds with bands, venues, theater companies, businesses, schools and non-profits that have helped solidify the importance of community to me and my art. As a co-owner of Ennui Gallery, I have been able to create a space to further explore screen printing, as well as, returning to my roots as an illustrator and painter.

“PRIMARY SEEDS (YELLOW)” BY SIENA SANDERSON
SIENA worked with domestic violence issues for many years before teaching art in area schools. Her program, The Neighborhood Arts Project, has brought art directly to the children in their own neighborhoods for the past 10 years. This after-school art program is now SmArt House, run through Youth Heartline. For four years she was part of the on-going SEED exhibit that designed a children’s educational component, teaching the science of seeds along side artwork inspired by the images of seeds. During the past year she has worked with the Juvenile Detention Center staff to create a garden and her hope is to bring art to the Juvenile Detention Center residents. “I feel the urgency of supporting the children in our community and believe the arts are key to providing an opportunity for our youth to express their feelings.”
The artists will be feted at the Taos Select Award Ceremony and Reception, Friday, Sept. 22 5-8pm at the Guadalupe Parish Gym.

1022 Reed Street For more than a decade, one of Taos’s best-kept secrets has been the complex of studios at 1022 Reed Street, south of the downtown historic district (hence the acronym “SoDo”). For one afternoon only, during the Fall Arts Festival, the artists are hosting open studios, and eight artists will be on hand to show and discuss work in a variety of mediums. The SoDo Open Studios offer a rare chance to visit the artists in the Reed Street complex, along with a glimpse of the creative ferment that has made Taos a mecca for artists for more than a century. Refreshments will be served.

All of the printmakers worked with Gary Cook, Jennifer Lynch and/or Amy Rankin at UMN-Taos.Through a variety of pop-up locations and the set up of a small press, Pressing On 7 awakens the public’s sensibilities to the printmaking process and educates collectors.

Hacienda de los Martinez, Route 240,Taos Martinez Hacienda, also known as Hacienda de los Martinez, is a Taos, New Mexico hacienda built during the Spanish colonial era. It is now a living museum listed on the National Register of Historic Places. During this multifaceted afternoon enjoy a guided tour with lecture of the historic hacienda, travel music by Kim Treiber and Chipper Thompson, and 13 poets from New Mexico and California performing their Route 66 poems.The evening is a tribute to Ronald B. PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE On behalf of the Board of Directors of the Fall Arts, a 501(c)3 non-profit organization, its my honor to express our gratitude to the many Taos artists for their participation. Also, its a pleasure to welcome our visitors and residents who will enjoy the Festival’s Taos Art Open exhibition over the next ten days. We faced many obstacles in the planning and presentation of the 43rd celebration for the artists and their work. The dedication and skills of the volunteer Board met these challenges with additional commitments from community volunteers. Thank you! Among the events is the Taos Environmental Film Festival presenting feature length and short films due to the tireless efforts of Board member Jean Stevens. Partnerships with the Taos Arts Council include “Take A Detour from Route 66: Taos to L.A.” a multi-disciplinary program hosted by the Hacienda de los Martinez and an outreach bilingual program of puppetry by Cristina Moliver for all 1st grade students at Enos Garcia Elementary. We continue to expand its schedule and promote Taos artists with satellite shows during the Fall Arts. This year featuring Press on VII at the Stables Gallery and new venues at 1022 Reed St, and throughout the Gusdorf St. area. We acknowledge and thank for generous financial support the New Mexico Arts, a division of the Department of Cultural Affairs, the NEA, Taos County Lodgers Tax Fund and the Taos Ski Valley Foundation as well as the Town of Taos for its in-kind services. PEGGY LANNING Originally from the small town of Long Beach, Mississippi, Peggy Lanning began her long-standing career as a renowned Southwest gallerist with only the trunk of her car to carry the Native American jewelry she sold to clients at one house gathering after another. Today, she is more than a successful female entrepreneur – at 84, she has just retired from active gallery management after selling her two prominent galleries in Sedona, Arizona; one she ran for forty-six years, the other for thirty-one.

KIDS GIVE BACK In 2008,The Taos Fall Arts Festival created a KIDS GIVE BACK Award Program that designates a portion of the proceeds from the Festival to art programs serving the youth of Taos County. In 2016, TISA, Taos Integrated School of the Arts, an inventive charter school in Taos, NM and Taos Pueblo Day School, located on the Taos Indian Reservation, were awarded $500 each for their arts programs.These programs were selected from applications sent by local teachers and artists. Look for their display at the Festival. We are proud to exhibit work supported by these art programs. The 2017 fund-raiser for KIDS GIVE BACK was an evening hosted in early September, 2017 by our 2017 Poster Artist, Ed Sandoval, at his Quesnel Studio. Ed entertained with a talk and demonstration about his painting process and of course, an appearance by his Arabian horse, Patron. Live music was provided by Josiah Cardenas and Guillermo Martinez from Taos High School. The 2017 KIDS GIVE BACK Award will be announced at the 2017 Open Exhibition Opening Night Reception, September 22, 5-8pm at the Guadalupe Parish Gymnasium, 205 Don Fernando Street in the Historic District of Taos.
