1. Which events are you most looking forward to?

Masters of Illusion at the Winspear Centre in March, and, of course, Celine Dion at Rogers Place in April.

2. For someone looking to rent something luxurious, what would you recommend? I highly recommend a helicopter tour over our fabulous city with Edmonton Helicopters. It’s the absolute best way to see the whole city.

3. Where should visitors go to find a unique souvenir? Stop in at TIX on the Square on the corner of Churchill Square for exclusive Edmonton souvenirs and local art.

4. What is a must-see attraction in Edmonton? Our Royal Alberta Museum! It’s a great new building, and tours are offered daily.

5. What are some of your favourite new restaurants? My new favourites include Lyon Restaurant—with casual French cuisine either for quick wine and appetizers or for that special occasion experience—and Gyu-Kaku Japanese BBQ.

Les Clefs d’Or Concierges have been opening doors for hotel guests in Canada since 1976, and today there are more than 150 members from coast to coast and more than 3,500 members worldwide! You can find Nella at the Fairmont Hotel Macdonald.

BUSINESS

When your city is your job, there aren’t many opportunities for business travel. Which is a shame in my case, because I love staying in hotels, attending workshops, and—especially—exploring new cities. But on the bright side? I get to help other people experience the travel high.

Edmonton is brimming with exciting opportunities, whether you’re visiting with family, travelling solo, or just killing time in between meetings. Looking for tasty brunch spots? You’ll find some here (pg 12). Need a new work outfit or fun place to bring colleagues? There’s an article for that (pg 10). What about the best festivals and events to fill your calendar? Yep, we’ve got that covered, too (pg 8).

So if you were looking for a sign to hit the town—this is it. We’ve got tips for getting around the city, Q&As with artists and chefs, and everything else to help you discover the best places to shop, dine, and visit.

Welcome to Edmonton.

The Rec Room (therecroom.com) is a restaurant, concert venue, arcade, bowling alley, and bar for a reasonable price. With locations in South Edmonton Common and West Edmonton Mall, you won’t have to travel far—or spend too much—when you visit.

If arcade games and family friendly fun are not for you, then Central Social Hall (centralsocialhall.com) is a great place to go for after-work drinks or happy hour. Sit back in

the lounge and watch the game while you share a brew and go over your day.

Known as one of Edmonton’s main shopping districts, 124 Street is home to the sister-lounge to Cosmo’s Greek Kitchen, Passport Restobar (10810-124 St.; passportrestobar.com). With a focus on local art and live performers in an intimate setting, this is the place to be to unwind after a busy day of networking.

The basement lounge at El Cortez (8230 Gateway Blvd.; elcortezcantina.com) is perfect for a night of Mexican eats, specialty drinks, and live DJs where you can listen to classic jams, remixes, and old-school hip-hop.

For a unique experience unlike anything else in Western

Talent Spotlight Christine Sokaymoh Frederick

She’s the co-founder and artistic director of Alberta Aboriginal Performing Arts and the Rubaboo Arts Festival, the executive director of the Dreamspeakers Film Festival, and the recipient of the 2016 Mayor’s Award for Excellence in Artistic Leadership. She’s also the first Indigenous Associate Chair of the Citadel Theatre and the first Indigenous board member of the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra. Impressed? Us, too. Meet Christine Frederick…

What’s guided your career path? Everything. My mom wondered about me as a young person doing all sorts of work, from multimedia programming and design to health and safety, anti-racism and, of course, the arts. She told me she sees now how I have used everything in what I do now.

CELINE DION

APRIL 21 & 22 After a legendary 16-year residency in Las Vegas, Celine Dion is on the Courage World Tour in support of her first English album in six years. Also entitled Courage, the new album is an eclectic mixture of beautiful ballads and edgy up-tempo tracks, including hits like “Imperfections,” “Lying Down,” and “Courage.” The pop diva’s heart and stardom will go on. Rogers Place, 102 St. & 104 Ave.; visit ticketmaster.ca for tickets.

AS YOU LIKE IT

THROUGH MARCH 15 A modern look at this Shakespeare classic! In the romantic comedy As You Like It, the young Rosalind is banished from court by her cruel uncle. Disguised as a man, she flees to the forest and falls for Orlando. Now imagine it set in Vancouver in the 1960s with wrestling and Beatles music. Citadel Theatre, 9828-101A Ave.; visit citadeltheatre.com for tickets.

What has surprised you the most over the course of your career? How long it took me to realize the long game. Focusing on creating opportunities for others creates the opportunity for all of us to be a part of something so much bigger than ourselves.

What do you love most about working and living in Edmonton? Connection to my ancestors and vision for our descendants.

Tell us more about your roles with Citadel Theatre and Winspear Centre. Both the Citadel and the Winspear are committed to inclusion and diversity. I help by consulting and sharing knowledge and skills in the Indigenous and mainstream art scenes and experience in cultural approaches (like protocols, practices, history, perspective, etc.).

What can visitors expect from this year’s festivals? As always, excellent and engaging art and entertainment that expand cultural appreciation and connection. And this year, we’re creating intimate settings to give audiences unique experiences. Our festivals are between April 18 and May 3.

For DIFF we’re excited to be working on a tribute to Inuit filmmaker Zacharias Kunuk! For Rubaboo we’re working to bring in Dubaikungkamiyalk (DKM) from Australia, with their dance piece “Divercity.” Not only is it moving, it’s also a result of years of work by many people for an International Indigenous Performance Touring Network.

WHERE ARE YOU FROM?

THROUGH APRIL 4 As the provincial artist in residence for Alberta, Lauren Crazybull wanted to offer not only an understanding of what this province looks like to Indigenous peoples on this land, but also show what can be accomplished when art and advocacy are championed and celebrated. She spent 2019 travelling and painting a portrait of the province many know as Alberta, and this solo exhibition is a culmination of her research and work. Latitude 53, 10242-106 St.; latitude53.org

ALBERTA AVIATION MUSEUM

If you’ve never been to the Alberta Aviation Museum, here’s a great reason to change that. The historic Blatchford airfield features interactive exhibits to attract a whole new generation of museum-goers. With more than 30 aircrafts, 40 exhibits, simulators, and personal artifacts from pilots on display, this living museum has never been more dynamic. Guided tours are available. Visit their website for dates and details. 11410 Kingsway, 780-451-1175. albertaaviationmuseum.com

What do you love about live painting in particular? As I live paint, it is meant to be an interactive experience, and so I provide a reason for people to talk to me. And everyone does! Meeting new people is one of the many joys in life. They tell you stories. You learn things... You never know who you may meet that day, and that makes life very exciting. After speaking with a man for about 45 minutes at the Hotel Macdonald while I was painting, near the end of the conversation he told me he was in town because he travels for work. He was a musician and was going to be playing at Rogers Place. I gulped and asked him who he played for, and he said, “’I’m the drummer for Def Leppard.”

How would you describe your artistic style? I paint in an impressionist style. Monet is my favourite artist and has influenced my approach to painting. I paint loosely with a palette knife using bold colours and textures… I enjoy writing titles and descriptions for each painting to help the viewer connect on a deeper level.

Can you tell us about a project you were particularly proud of? I have a mural that was put up in 2016, just west of the new museum downtown. It is on the west-facing wall towards Rogers Place. It measures 40x26 feet of a giant forest with flowers… My husband sold his truck and we paid for the project ourselves. I wanted to have a mural of my art in the heart of my own city, and so this was my gift to Edmontonians for supporting my work from the beginning. It has been categorized as an Instagrammable wall, and there are tours that take you to my mural.

NESTS FOR THE END OF THE WORLD

Through May 3 — For this thought-provoking exhibition, the AGA commissioned artists to envision and create a ‘nest’ to cope with the end of the world; however it may come about. From hopeful and optimistic to humorous and ironic, these ‘nests’ offer reprieve, refuge, rejuvenation and difficult truths. This timely exhibition is a response to our current tumultuous and polarized world. Art Gallery of Alberta, 2 Sir Winston Churchill Sq., 99 St. & 102A Ave., 780-422-6223. youraga.ca Map 3-I3 D

A shaving and beard care product line, Like Grandpa Grooming Products is handmade in Edmonton with allnatural ingredients. We spoke with one of the cofounders about how their hobby turned into a small local business with tremendous community support. Meet Ken Kaminski-Raab...

How did this passion evolve into a business? It came about when we were giving our products away to friends. When the feedback came back that it was performing excellent and fixing a lot of issues they were having with their shave or beard, we knew we had to develop it further and bring it to market. And scratching that itch is how we determine what products are coming next.

What is the best part about running this type of business? It is the interaction with our customers and hearing that our product has made a positive impact. It is always amazing to hear that people love the product you spend so much time developing and that they cannot live without it.

What’s the secret to a good shave? On the prairies, a good place to start is skincare. With little humidity here, adding a little extra skincare into your routine can often be the difference between irritation and problem-free shaving. From there, traditional shaving tools like safety razors and quality products can be a game-changer.

What advice do you give people looking to pick up a gift for someone else? Take a peek in their cabinet and see what products they are currently using and listen to what they complain about. Those two pieces will usually give you an idea of where to start—or simply just pay attention if they are bearded or shaving.

Where can people pick up your products? You can find us every Saturday at the Old Strathcona Farmers’ Market, where we love to chat and answer your questions personally. We have stockists around town like Kent of Inglewood and Barber Ha, and of course, online (LikeGrandpa.com) works too.

OLD SPAGHETTI FACTORY

We love an all-inclusive meal—but especially one that includes ice cream. Whether you’re ordering the classic Spaghetti with Meatballs, the signature Red Thai Curry Linguine, or the 8 oz New York Steak, you get the complete dining experience at the Old Spaghetti Factory. All entrées start with hot sourdough bread (with whipped garlic butter) and soup or salad, then finish with spumoni ice cream—a blend of chocolate, vanilla, and pistachio—and tea or coffee. 10220-103 St., 780-422-6088; West Edmonton Mall, #1666, 8882-170 St., 780-444-2181. oldspaghettifactory.ca

Chef Spotlight Jeremy Korten

The new JW Marriott in Edmonton’s ICE District is also home to Braven Restaurant—and at its helm is Jeremy Korten. The executive chef has a long history with the Oliver & Bonacini restaurant group, moving to Edmonton specifically to open Braven. Meet Jeremy Korten…

What do you love most about cooking and the industry? When it comes to cooking, I am passionate about prepping, planning, and executing classic dishes that have been around in some form or another for hundreds of years. There’s something magical about taking a recipe that is so rooted in history and people’s memories and then putting your own little spin on it… As for working in a kitchen, I love managing a large team of cooks and sous chefs. There’s a lot of intensity in the kitchen, and we thrive off of that type of momentum. At the end of the day, teamwork is vital. I get really excited about having the opportunity to mentor my cooks and see them grow into sous chefs to chefs to restaurant owners themselves. I also learn so much from them, and they’re always expanding my perspective and offering me new ways of looking at a recipe or ingredient. It feels like a true partnership. What’s a dish you’re most proud of? The maple rum roasted B.C. black cod with Newfoundland screech! There’s a lot of history in that dish…The screech brings a robust depth of flavour to the dish. It’s super Canadian. We work with Steve Johansen and the crew at Organic Ocean to source the fish, which is line-caught in B.C.

As a new transplant to Edmonton, what would you say to others who are new? Be prepared and be excited to meet nice people. The people here are so pleasant!

What are some of your favourite Edmonton restaurants? Believe it or not, I haven’t really had much time to go out to eat yet! But when I do have time, I love Bodega, DOSC, Uccellino, and Rge Rd.

Edmonton’s can’t-miss events in May/June

INTERNATIONAL CHILDREN’S

FESTIVAL OF THE ARTS

MAY 26-31 For nearly 40 years, the International Children’s Festival of the Arts has offered one-of-akind experiences for kids to sing, dance, and play. This year’s feature performances include Disney’s My Son Pinocchio Jr., OTÂCIMOW ᐅᑖᒋᒧᐤ Storyteller, and the Canadian premiere of Dodecalis Luminarium, an inflatable immersive walk-in sanctuary of light, colour, and sound. For a list of performance venues and addresses, visit stalbert.ca/exp/childfest

TREVOR NOAH

JUNE 20 You may know him as the current host of The Daily Show—or from his best-selling comedic memoir, Born A Crime: Stories from a South African Childhood. Due to popular demand, the Emmy Award-winning Trevor Noah is bringing his comedic stylings and political commentaries back to Edmonton, now on his new Sorry, Not Sorry Tour. Rogers Place; visit ticketmaster.ca for tickets.

NUOVA OPERA & MUSIC THEATRE FESTIVAL

MAY 23–JULY 5 The fantastic NUOVA Opera & Music Theatre Festival showcases incredible vocal and acting talent through varied musical programming, ranging from sacred music to musical theatre, oratorio to opera. Audiences will enjoy this wide range of classic vocal music at a variety of concerts and this year’s mainstage productions, including The Crucible playing from June 27–July 2 and The Music Man playing from June 28–July 5. Smaller concerts and shows, as well as masterclass sessions, are held at various venues around the city; visit operanuova.ca/festival for tickets and more information. w
