Which Edmonton venue feels like yours, and why?

Editor's Note CURTAINS UP, EDMONTON!

It’s theatre season in the city and we’re celebrating the return of live performance in all its forms. From Broadway blockbusters to indie gems, Edmonton’s stages are buzzing again.

But it’s not just theatres raising the curtain. We’re celebrating all things art in this issue, including a spotlight on local galleries (check the Art & Attractions Guide, page 20). And it’s also game time: we’ve got full season home-game listings for Edmonton’s favourite sports teams.

Find all the details—concerts, plays, galleries, and sports—in the Entertainment Guide starting on page 16. It’s your cheat sheet to a year of fun.

Whatever your scene—onstage or off—it’s a great time to get out and see what Edmonton’s got going on.

WE ASKED:

1) What’s the best play or performance you’ve ever seen in Edmonton? 2) What late summer festivals or annual events do you like to attend, to farewell the season?

1) I saw The Ballad of Johnny and June and The Jersey Boys at the Citadel. I absolutely loved both performances. The actors were outstanding and the music was delightful.

2) I’m a bit biased because the Heritage Festival is one of my favourites even though I work for them! I also really enjoy the Fringe Festival for the street performers and the chance to see Edmonton talent on the stages. I also enjoy Cariwest for the music, Carribean food and the vibrant regalia.

Chelsea McCurdy, Office Manager & Volunteer Coordinator, Edmonton Heritage Festival Association

1) Oh—that's a difficult question! I would say that a few performances spring to mind over the past many years... Andrew MacDonald gave an absolutely inspired masterclass in physical comedy in One Man, Two Guv’nors (Citadel). Alex Dawkins was exceptional in The Maids (Putrid Brat). I saw it twice, and her detailed, precise work was so consistent. Oscar Derkx just killed it in A Gentlemen's Guide To Love And Murder (Grindstone). And I have many favorites from my shows at NLT, but I'm Mennonite, and it's considered vanity to promote one's own work...!

2) Fringe. That's it. That's all. It takes over my whole summer, obsessively. My whole schedule is Fringe. And September is about recovering from it.

A NEW AT THE W Winspear JEAN-MARIE ZEITOUNI

hen Jean-Marie Zeitouni first stepped onto the Winspear Centre stage in 2006, he wasn’t yet imagining himself as the artistic captain of the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra. But over the years, as he returned nearly annually to guest-conduct, a rapport began to take root—one that has now blossomed into something official. This fall, Zeitouni begins his tenure as Music Director of the ESO, ushering in a new era for one of Canada’s leading orchestras.

“This orchestra welcomed me early in my career, and over the years, it has become a true artistic home,” he says. “Edmonton is home to one of the finest orchestras in North America and to an acoustic gem, the Winspear Centre. To help shape

its future is both a joy and a responsibility — one I embrace with energy and passion.”

Zeitouni arrives with a formidable résumé. A native of Montreal, he has led ensembles across North America and Europe, including roles as Music Director of the Colorado Music Festival and the Columbus Symphony, and as Artistic Director of I Musici de Montréal. He’s also a longtime faculty member at the Conservatoire de musique de Montréal. But for all his credentials, he’s warm and easygoing in conversation—more like an enthusiastic guide than an intimidating maestro.

For Edmonton’s arts scene, his appointment is more than a change in personnel. It’s a signal of the ESO’s continued dedication to accessibility, artistic innovation, and community connection. As Zeitouni

NEW ERA THE Winspear

TAKES THE BATON

puts it: “I have the greatest respect for the musicians as well as for the entire organization… I’m excited to grow my connection with this wonderful community that champions bold ideas and artistic creativity.”

The 2025–26 season at the Winspear Centre reflects that ethos, balancing classical heavyweights with crowd-pleasing spectacle. Zeitouni’s own debut concert—“Zeitouni Conducts Dvořák & Prokofiev”—is a music-lover’s dream: Prokofiev’s emotionally charged Symphony No. 5, Dvořák’s lush Violin Concerto featuring Edmonton-born soloist Jacques Forestier, and a new Canadian composition by John Estacio.

But the season isn’t all highbrow. “Galactic Blockbusters: Symphony in Space” delivers

“Edmonton is home to one of the finest orchestras in North America and to an acoustic gem, the Winspear Centre.”

cinematic drama with scores from film and TV’s most iconic space adventures, while “The Billy Joel Songbook” features Tony DeSare belting out the piano man’s greatest hits. It’s not hard to imagine new audiences discovering the ESO through those doors.

MARK YOUR SEASON:

Highlights from the Winspear’s 2025–26 Lineup

Galactic Blockbusters: Symphony in Space Interstellar themes from sci-fi classics, in full surround-sound glory.

BONUS TIP: The Winspear’s full season is stuffed to bursting. Visit WinspearCentre.com for the complete concert calendar.

Zeitouni embraces this eclecticism. “Many people—myself included—come to orchestral music through movie soundtracks or pop culture,” he says. “There’s so much artistry in that world. I love the scores of John Williams, of course, but I’m also intrigued by newer composers who are blending classical technique with cinematic impact.”

The season’s popular Pairings series continues that spirit of approachability. “Paganini & Pinot” marries virtuosic violin fireworks with curated wine tastings, while “Beethoven & Beer” is exactly what it sounds like: a night of masterworks and craft brews. Both events are designed to welcome curious first-timers and seasoned concert-goers alike.

“Music is a conversation… between the stage and the hall. My job is to make sure that conversation stays alive, exciting, and open to everyone.”
—Jean-Marie Zeitouni

The Winspear Centre, now in its third decade, remains one of the most acoustically acclaimed concert halls in North America. Designed with the intimacy of a European opera house and the clarity of a recording studio, it gives the ESO a true home-field advantage. More than just a performance space, it’s a cultural cornerstone, housing the Tommy Banks Centre for Musical Creativity and a growing suite of education and outreach programs.

For Zeitouni, the Winspear is not just a venue— it’s an instrument in itself. “Conducting in a hall like this is a privilege. It allows for a kind of detail and expressiveness that’s rare. And the audience can feel it.”

As he prepares to take up the baton full-time, Zeitouni isn’t just thinking about repertoire. He’s thinking about people—the musicians, the staff, and the audiences who will share in the ESO’s next chapter.

“Music is a conversation,” he says. “It’s not about hierarchy. It’s about connection—between the conductor and the players, and between the stage and the hall. My job is to make sure that conversation stays alive, exciting, and open to everyone.”

SIXTY YEARS OF

THE CITADEL'S SEASON Diamond

The curtain rises on a landmark season at the Citadel Theatre, which marks 60 years of unforgettable performances, bold storytelling, and deep roots in Edmonton’s arts community. Since opening in 1965 with Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?, the Citadel has evolved into a powerhouse of Canadian theatre—home to world premieres, touring hits, and local legends alike.

STILL KNOWS HOW TO SURPRISE US.

This milestone 2025-26 season—appropriately themed “Live Since ’65”—is a tribute to the past and a thrilling leap into the future. On deck are bold adaptations (Life of Pi, Cyrano de Bergerac), timely dramas (Casey and Diana), and holiday magic with the return of A Christmas Carol and the festive remix Bear Grease: Shack Up for the Winter. There’s even a musical based on Stuart McLean’s beloved Vinyl Cafe stories, premiering this fall.

And here’s something many might not know: the Citadel is a nonprofit. Every standing ovation helps fuel another season of theatre made right here in Edmonton. Along with presenting major productions, the Citadel also supports playwrights, actors, directors, and students through a range of development programs.

Looking back on six decades of standout performances—think Macbeth, Evita, The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time, Hadestown, and The Garneau Block, it’s clear: the Citadel has never stopped evolving.

Trust us—this diamond anniversary season will sparkle.

RODEO Returns with a ROAR

CFR51 IN EDMONTON

A

fter a triumphant comeback in 2024, the Canadian Finals Rodeo—now CFR51—gallops back into Rogers Place from October 1–4, 2025, marking the second consecutive year the championship returns to Edmonton. Hosted by Northlands Coliseum since its inception in 1974, CFR then spent the last five seasons in Red Deer, before returning to Edmonton in 2024 for a three-year stint.

This year promises the same adrenaline-charged six-round showdown: bareback, saddle bronc, bull riding, roping, barrel racing, steer wrestling, and team roping, complete with junior showdown events and breakaway roping. And with a jaw-dropping payout of over C$1.65 million, athletes are gunning for glory—and serious cash.

A DOWNTOWN RODEO RENAISSANCE

Edmonton isn't just hosting. You can feel the rodeo reverberate through the ICE District. From impromptu cattle drives among skyscrapers to themed menus and cowboy-boot decor popping up downtown, the city will fully embrace the Western spirit. Local businesses—from pubs to hotels— report noticeable traffic and footfall, with visitors zipping between events on e-scooters and hotel-hop shuttle rides.

AND THE AWARD KEEPS ROLLING IN!

CFR51 was recognized as the Edmonton Destination Event of the Year in June 2025, a nod not just to its large impact but to its legendary performances. Take, for example, “Virgil”, the famed bucking horse who has been crowned Bareback Horse of the CFR five times, including most recently in 2024—and has

twice taken home the national Bareback Horse of the Year title . Watching a champion like Virgil throw the top riders for eight seconds of heartpounding action is part of what makes the CFR such a must-see event.

WHAT’S NEW FOR CFR51

With one year under its belt at Rogers Place, CFR51 is building on momentum. Improvements include enhanced lighting, next-level camera rigs (think broadcasts on The Cowboy Channel), and expanded women’s and youth-level events.

Whether you're a die-hard rodeo fan or just curious what all the boot-stomping buzz is about, CFR51 delivers spectacle, grit, and Alberta pride in spades. Edmonton’s rodeo revival isn’t just back—it’s kicking harder than ever.

QUICK PEEK: Cowboy Expo – Yes, It's

Free!

The Canadian Country Expo at the Edmonton EXPO Centre runs October 1–5, 2025, and it’s totally free to attend. You can wander through 165,000 sq ft of Western-themed exhibits. Plus, there’s a free shuttle between the EXPO Centre and Rogers Place for CFR performances—making it easy to bounce between the two. CountryExpo.ca

Their 2025/26 season, cheekily dubbed “The F Word: Fifty. Forward. Future,” brings back an audience favourite (The Pink Unicorn), debuts a holiday comedy (How Patty and Joanne Won High Gold), and revisits the company’s experimental roots with the wordless, ever-changing Request Programme. As always, NLT promises smart, sharp, and emotionally-driven work that sparks conversation—exactly what we’ve come to expect over five fearless decades.

BEARCLAW’S GOLDEN ANNIVERSARY

Bearclaw Gallery, a cornerstone of Edmonton’s arts scene, celebrates its 50th anniversary this fall, a milestone for this family-run champion of contemporary Indigenous art. Since 1975, Bearclaw has showcased work from leading and emerging Indigenous artists, becoming a trusted home for powerful voices and stories. To mark the occasion, the gallery is planning a special anniversary exhibition featuring longtime artists, a retrospective of their five decades, and a place of honour for founder Jackie Bugera’s mother, who opened the gallery all those years ago. Whether you’re a long-time collector or a first-time visitor, this is the perfect moment to discover (or rediscover) Bearclaw’s beautifully curated, deeply meaningful collection.

NEW NAME, SAME GREAT ART

Big changes are underway at Bugera Lamb Fine Art. Longtime gallery co-owner Angie Matheson has stepped away, leaving Claire Lamb as sole owner, which is a natural evolution for this well-loved gallery. Along with a name change, the gallery now calls the corner of 124 Street and Jasper Avenue home, settling into the heart of one of Edmonton’s most creative neighbourhoods. Bugera Lamb continues its reputation for showcasing outstanding contemporary Canadian artists; paintings, sculpture, and fine craft, while quietly evolving its curatorial voice under Claire’s stewardship. For art lovers, collectors, and curious browsers alike, it’s the perfect excuse to revisit a gallery that feels both familiar and freshly reimagined.

AMBIENT GRAMMAR

The beautifully relocated Peter Robertson Gallery invites visitors to discover its new space on 124 Street, an ideal setting for its thoughtful exhibitions. August features a group show showcasing gallery artists, offering the perfect chance to tour the new location. This fall, the gallery presents Ambient Grammar, a striking solo exhibition by Gavin Lynch (Sep. 18–Oct. 11), whose atmospheric, textural landscapes blur boundaries between natural and digital spaces. Lynch’s work has been exhibited across Canada and collected by institutions such as the RBC and Simon Fraser University, and his paintings quietly challenge how we see and remember place and space. Whether you’re a longtime collector or simply curious, this is a gallery worth stepping into this season. PRobertsonGallery.com

DISCOVER EDMONTON’S QUIET CREATIVITY ART

HAVENS

Edmonton’s arts scene extends beyond wellknown galleries and public art in the downtown core. Some of the city’s most inspiring creative spaces lie off the beaten path—nooks and nodes where experimentation thrives and surprising beauty awaits.

1. ARTIST-RUN CENTRES

Harcourt House and Latitude 53 stand as quiet powerhouses of contemporary art. Harcourt House, downtown’s largest artist-run centre since 1988, houses 44 studios, two public galleries, and art education programs—all free to visit. These spaces prioritize artistic risk, community, and connection— far from commercial pressures. Latitude53.org, HarcourtHouse.ab.ca

2. STUDIO OPEN-HOUSES

Want to peek behind the curtain? Many artists host occasional open-studio events—announced via social media, newsletters, or community boards— where you can chat with creators, watch live demos, and maybe take home fresh work. Keep tabs on Instagram feeds and local arts lists to catch them.

3. CIVIC & NEIGHBOURHOOD GEMS

Art isn’t confined to galleries. The McMullen Gallery, tucked inside the University of Alberta Hospital since 1986, offers a quiet retreat with rotating visual exhibits aimed at healing and reflection. Look out for local artists showcased in community halls, libraries, and recreation centres.

4. MURALS EVERYWHERE

Edmonton’s mural movement is booming. The Edmonton Mural Festival annually programs new public art—large pieces, mentorships, and self-guided mural tours through downtown. Coupled with the permanent installations at (ÎNÎW) Indigenous Art Park (in Queen Elizabeth Park), this is ideal city art for walkers and tourists alike. EdmontonMuralFest.com

5. FRINGE & POP-UP SPACES

Small venues and festivals brim with edgy pop-up art and site-specific performance. From intimate porch shows to reclaimed storefront installations and guerrilla galleries, these ephemeral pieces pack punch, and are often conversation starters.

WHY EXPLORE THESE SPACES?

Meaningful Encounters: Meet the artists, ask them about their process, and hear the story behind each piece.

Unexpected Encounters: Off-menu art often surprises by being raw, authentic, and visually arresting.

Community Connection: These venues are welcoming. They reward curiosity over formality.

PLANNING YOUR WEEKEND ART CRAWL

Follow social and neighbourhood feeds for open-studio alerts. Visit Edmonton Mural Festival’s website or search “mural tour Edmonton” for self-guided routes. Drop by McMullen Gallery for a peaceful, art-infused pause. Keep an eye out for festival flyers in cafes, rec centres, and local hubs—great for catching small-scale exhibitions or call-for-art events. And, of course, watch InfoEdmonton.com for art news.

Edmonton’s creative power isn’t just on the marquee; it’s quietly thriving in basements, bike lanes, and bedside galleries. Venture out this season—wander with intention and you’ll discover the unexpected canvases that bring our city to life.

Dining

ALL DAY, ALL YEAR, ALL CANADIAN

Denny’s isn’t just an all-day-breakfast icon—it’s proudly Canadian. The diner chain is celebrating 55 years in Canada this year, having first opened in 1970 and quietly evolving into a truly local operation. Since 1992, Denny’s Canada has been 100% Canadian-owned, headquartered in Vancouver, and works with homegrown suppliers like Burnbrae, McCain, and Saputo. With 87 locations coast-to-coast (including several in Edmonton), “Canada’s Diner” serves up familiar favourites—Grand Slams and omelettes—while also supporting local communities, charities, and initiatives. It’s a reassuring classic for a reason: quality, value, a warm welcome for everyone— any time of day, any day of the year (yes, even Christmas!).

ONE OF EDMONTON’S OLDEST FAMILY-RUN RESTAURANTS

Blue Willow is one of Edmonton’s longest running single-family restaurants, and this September marks an impressive 67 years at the same location. The fourth-generation Mah family has been serving loyal customers since the late 1950s, making it a beloved institution in the city’s culinary history. From the signature Chinese-Canadian comfort classics to the warm, familiar atmosphere, Blue Willow has carved out a charming niche where generations return for generations. It’s a rare gem: a family-run spot with staying power, timeless recipes, and a truly local story. If you’re looking to taste a little history, plus excellent food, make Blue Willow part of your next dining outing. BlueWillowRestaurant.com

WHERE THE SCHNITZEL NEVER ENDS

Bistro Praha has held court in downtown Edmonton since 1977, offering authentic Czech and Central European classics (goulash, schnitzel, steak tartare) in a cozy, late-night setting. Born from Czech immigrant František Cikanek’s dream of bringing Prague’s café culture to Edmonton, the restaurant was reborn after a 2009 fire and reopened in the Empire Building in 2011—complete with its iconic Swiss Alps mural and signed stools from patrons like Kirk Douglas and Joni Mitchell. Owned today by Milan Svajgr and Alena Bacovsky, Bistro Praha remains a haven for artists, performers, and anyone craving hearty comfort food and European atmosphere. Nearly 48 years later, it’s still Edmonton’s go-to for schnitzel, goulash, and a late night pint.

The Last Word

LOOKING FORWARD THE LAST WORD

The curtain is up, and Edmonton’s arts season is in full swing. From August through October, the city buzzes with creativity: galleries packed with new exhibitions, stages alive with theatre, ballet, and concerts, and late-season festivals bringing music, dance, and food to the streets. Whether you’re discovering a hidden art space, settling into a darkened theatre for an opening night, or catching one last festival under the fall sky, this is the season where Edmonton shines creatively.

NEXT ISSUE

When the snow starts falling, Edmonton doesn’t hibernate—it celebrates. In our November–January issue, we’ll feature a mini Season Gift Guide packed with inspired local finds and ideas for everyone on your list.

We’ll also highlight the best of Edmonton’s winter festivals: think Silver Skate, Deep Freeze, and Flying Canoë Volant—events that prove no one embraces the cold quite like Edmontonians.

AND ALSO...

We’ll celebrate everything good about this city at this time of year. From skating rinks to holiday lights to cozy cafes, Edmonton in winter is pure charm.

Until then, enjoy these creative months—whether you’re gallery-hopping, theatre-going, or dancing at a festival—and soak up every last warm evening. We’ll see you back here in November, ready for the season of lights, snow, and winter fun!
