ome should be a place where we feel a true sense of connection and joy. For me, that place is Henderson, Kentucky.
EDITORIAL EDITOR
Eighteen years ago, I moved to Henderson fresh out of college, and today I am proud to call this community home. Originally from Northern Kentucky, I met my husband, James, while serving as a Young Life leader at the University of Kentucky. I still remember my first visit to Henderson. A festival was taking place that weekend, and as we walked downtown, I was immediately drawn to the historic buildings and the homes lining Main Street. Growing up near Cincinnati, I was familiar with communities along the Ohio River, but there was something uniquely special about this small town. Everyone seemed to know one another. Nearly a year later, I moved to Henderson. James' family business, Home Oil & Gas Company Inc., has been part of the community for more than 100 years, and it quickly became clear why generations of families have chosen to build their lives here. Looking back now, I am grateful Henderson became the foundation for our family.

Over the years, friends and relatives from out of town have visited, and some of our favorite memories are the simple ones, bike rides on Elm and Main streets, browsing local boutiques and stopping for lunch along the way. People from Northern Kentucky often tell me Henderson reminds them of Fort Thomas, Kentucky, a town where I grew up. There is a familiarity here, a warmth and charm that immediately makes people feel welcome.
Henderson Living is a FREE magazine because of community support. Thank you to the great group of businesses and organizations who advertise.
Some people may recognize Henderson as the town across the river from Evansville, Indiana, but those of us who live or visited here know it is much more than a dot on the map. Our family has lived both downtown and in the country, and no matter where we have called home within Henderson County, one thing has remained important to us: raising our two boys, Marshall and Parker, in a community rooted in family values, friendships and connection. James and I hope that wherever life takes them, Henderson will always be a place where they feel at home.
DESIGN & PHOTOGRAPHY
As editor of Henderson Living magazine, I am excited not only to share what I have personally grown to love about this community but also to highlight the stories and perspectives of the people of all ages who make it special. There is a unique appreciation that comes from being a transplant to a community like Henderson. Sometimes, seeing a place through fresh eyes reminds you just how special it truly is.

As summer begins to wind down, families across Henderson County are starting to look ahead to a new school year. The first day of school is Aug. 13, and Henderson County Schools is preparing to welcome students back as it continues its mission of providing extraordinary educational opportunities for every student. This time of year is the perfect opportunity for families to begin easing back into school routines. Simple steps such as reviewing supply lists, re-establishing bedtime and morning schedules, and encouraging daily reading can make a significant difference in helping students start the year strong. It is also important for the community to remember that traffic will increase once school begins. Motorists are encouraged to remain especially attentive to student and bus safety during arrival and dismissal times. This school year, preschool programs will expand to A.B. Chandler Elementary School, Niagara Elementary School, Spottsville Elementary School and Cairo Elementary School. Henderson County Schools will continue to offer its high-quality early learning program at Thelma B. Johnson Early Learning Center. The expansion will allow the district to serve more of its youngest learners and help prepare them for kindergarten and beyond, closer to home. This commitment to supporting students at every stage of their educational journey extends beyond early learning programs. It continues through high school, where students have access to a wide range of opportunities in academics, career pathways, athletics, the arts and student leadership. Schools across the district will also host back-to-school events throughout the summer. These gatherings provide families with an opportunity to meet teachers, drop off supplies and become familiar with school buildings before the first day of classes. Families are encouraged to follow their child’s school on social media for event dates, times and updates.

3 Turning the PAGE: The City’s
Vision for Parks, Recreation and Trails
Written by H O L L I B L A N F O R D Public Relations Director for The City of Henderson
Parks play an important role in what makes Henderson a special place to live. From family gatherings and youth sports to walks along the river, these spaces contribute to the quality of life residents value every day. Now, the City of Henderson is looking ahead with its first Parks, Recreation and Trails Master Plan, a 10 year roadmap designed to guide investments and improvements in parks, recreation and trail development across the city. Developed through nearly two years of planning, the master plan reflects extensive community input gathered through surveys, public meetings and conversations with local stakeholders. An active steering committee appointed by city officials also helped guide the process. At the center of the plan is P.A.G.E., a framework that stands for Protect, Adapt, Grow and Enhance. These four principles are intended to shape the future of Henderson’s parks and recreation system while helping city leaders identify service gaps, address inequities and make strategic decisions about future investments. The master plan focuses on both improving existing parks and creating new recreational opportunities. Recommendations include upgrades to park amenities, expanded trail connections, additional playground features and recreational facilities that reflect the evolving interests of the community. A major emphasis of the plan is connectivity, with a goal of linking neighborhoods, schools, businesses and other popular destinations through walking paths and trails. Community feedback played a major role in shaping the final plan. Residents shared their ideas and priorities for the future of Henderson’s parks and recreational spaces, helping identify needs such as more family-friendly activities, improved accessibility and enhancements that better serve visitors of all ages and abilities. The plan also recognizes the broader impact of parks and recreation beyond play. Quality parks support tourism, public health and economic development, all of which contribute to the city’s overall success as it continues to grow and attract new residents and visitors. Most importantly, city leaders view the master plan as a living document. While it outlines a vision for the next decade, it is designed to remain flexible as community needs change and new funding opportunities emerge. Through continued collaboration and strategic investment, the City of Henderson hopes to build a stronger, more connected future through its parks, recreation and trails system.
Did You Know? Grandpa Jones, one of country music's most recognizable entertainers, was born in the Niagara community of Henderson County in 1913. The youngest of 10 children in a sharecropping family, he developed a love for traditional music at an early age and went on to become a legendary banjo player and old-time country singer. Known for his trademark overalls, white mustache and down-home humor, Grandpa Jones became a national star through the popular television show Hee Haw, where he entertained audiences for decades. He recorded numerous songs throughout his career, including the classic "Mountain Dew," and helped preserve traditional American folk and country music. In recognition of his contributions to the genre, he was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 1978. From a small Henderson County farming community to country music stardom, Grandpa Jones remains one of the area's most famous native sons.

Nicklaus compete on television. As he grew older, he learned even more about the game while caddying at Henderson Country Club. “There was just something about it,” Odell recalled. “I loved the game and being around the people.” Even as a young boy, Odell was not afraid of hard work. At just 10 years old, he began helping an elderly woman and a schoolteacher with yard work. What may have seemed like a small act at the time quietly planted the seeds for a lifelong business built not on advertising, but on trust. Over the years, that small yard work business became part of who Odell is. If you ask him what matters most in his work, he will not talk about money. Instead, he talks about being reliable, showing up when you say you will and treating people right. Those values came directly from his parents. His mother, Ollie Watson, worked as a house cleaner, and his father, Henry Watson, worked in construction. Watching them work tirelessly taught Odell lessons that stayed with him throughout his life. They showed him that character is built through consistency — through the jobs nobody sees and the sacrifices nobody applauds. Odell carried those lessons into everything he did. Growing up with several brothers and sisters, family was always central to his life. Being part of a large family taught him how to share responsibilities, support others and appreciate togetherness. every season of life, Henderson has remained home. As a teenager at Henderson County High School, he discovered another passion: running. He competed in the 400-, 800- and 1,500-meter races before continuing long-distance running well into adulthood. Most people would never dream of running 50 miles in a race. Odell did. He completed a 50-mile ultramarathon in Louisville in about 7½ hours, not because he was trying to prove something, but simply because he enjoyed the challenge. He went on to run marathons and finished among the top 30 runners twice while in his 30s. To date, he has competed in more than 200 races. Still, Odell tells those stories with humility, almost brushing them aside with a laugh. “I wasn’t fast,” he said. “I just kept going.” Even in these past few years, he stays active through biking, running and gardening. There is a youthful energy in the way he talks about life. A reminder that staying active is not just about physical health for Odell, it is about remaining engaged with the world around him. Perhaps that is why so many people know and admire him. Through his yard work business, Odell has become woven into the lives of countless Henderson families.
When people talk about Henry “Odell” Watson, the conversation often extends beyond his landscaping skills. While his beautifully maintained gardens and yards have become well-known throughout Henderson, those who know him best say it is his character that leaves the greatest impression. “Odell is an extremely reliable, hard worker,” Amy Jameson said. “He comes on time and doesn’t leave a minute early. He does amazing yard work and helps tremendously with absolutely anything we need. From planting and mulching to pulling trees, he does it all. We are so grateful for all his help and for making our yard dreams come to life.” For Phyllis Crafton, Odell’s work is more than yard maintenance. “Odell is an artist in a landscape garden,” Crafton said. “He makes trimming and weeding look so easy. I appreciate his talent.” Jim Crafton said it is Odell’s attitude that stands out most. “I look forward to seeing Odell because he always has a smile and such a positive, friendly attitude,” Crafton said. “He cares about others and is interested in how you are doing. It does not seem to matter what he is doing or what the weather is like. He is happy, smiling and working very hard.”
One story still makes Odell smile. Several years ago, a passenger on a Viking River Cruise who had stopped in Henderson noticed Odell working in a beautifully maintained yard on Main Street. Impressed by his work, she approached him and asked whether he would move to her state and work exclusively in her gardens full time. Odell laughed as he recalled how persistent she was. Even after he politely declined, she returned during another cruise stop, tracked him down on Main Street and asked again. Once again, he thanked her for the offer but explained that his home and his heart were in Henderson. When asked what he hopes for the future, Odell’s answer is simple: live in the moment and appreciate each day as it comes. For Odell, life has never been about chasing fame or attention. Instead, it has been about quietly building a meaningful life one relationship, one conversation and one act of kindness at a time. Because in Henderson, people still wave at one another. Stories still matter. Relationships still matter. And in a world that often moves too fast, perhaps people like Henry Odell Watson are exactly the kind of people we need most.

hen I was a teenager, my love for local history began thanks to my father, Charles Sommers, who owned a printing business. One night, he brought home a copy of a rare, out-of-print book he had been commissioned to reprint. The book was Edmund L. Starling’s History of Henderson County, the earliest definitive “biography” of our community. Opening those pages, I was drawn into the fascinating details of Henderson’s history, and I’ve been hooked ever since. For almost 30 years, I have led walking and bus tours to introduce visitors and locals to Henderson’s rich history. During those years, I have discovered that the stories of Henderson’s past come from the remarkable people, hidden landmarks and unexpected moments

that have shaped our community. As Henderson Living celebrates its 10th anniversary, I would like to share some of the historical snapshots I have gathered that make my own “Henderson living” so rewarding.

WIDE MAIN AND ELM STREETS
Fun Fact: Agent Samuel Hopkins’ intense fear of fire led the Transylvania Company to create the four wide streets.
The Transylvania Company spent just one week platting the land, and it purposefully designed Henderson with four wide streets running parallel to the Ohio River and 25 broad streets intersecting them. To attract prospective settlers, the company distributed promotional advertisements specifying that purchasers of a town lot were required to build a framed, hewed or sawed log house at least 16 feet square with a plank floor. Henderson’s unusually wide streets reassured buyers that the spacious layout would help prevent a routine cabin fire from leaping across the street and destroying neighboring wooden homes. Modern-day Henderson retains those same generous widths on Main and Elm streets, creating uniquely wide and beautiful boulevards with diagonal downtown parking on both sides.

shipped downriver. Around the same time, Henderson became part of the western Kentucky region known for producing a particular strain of dark tobacco that quickly became popular and was exported in great quantities to Great Britain and continental Europe. Tobacco sales eventually made Henderson reportedly the largest dark tobacco market in the world, with 18 tobacco stemmeries operating in the county during the late 1800s. The sheer volume of cash flowing into Henderson created a remarkably high concentration of millionaires relative to its modest population. Many of the opulent homes lining Henderson’s streets were built by families whose wealth came from tobacco merchants, exporters and stemmery owners.
JOHN JAMES AUDUBON
Visitors who come to Henderson to visit John James Audubon State Park and its museum are often unaware of Audubon’s downtown connections. Long before he became famous, Audubon lived in Henderson from 1810 to 1819, the longest period he lived in any one
place. After arriving from Louisville, Audubon opened a dry-goods store and family cabin on the northwest corner of North Main and Second streets. Early records show the store sold guns, fishing equipment, flour, buffalo robes, dress patterns, sugar, boots, saddlebags and much more. In 1816, Audubon and his brother-in-law, Thomas Bakewell, invested $15,000 to build a fourstory, steam-powered sawmill and gristmill on the riverfront at the foot of Second Street. Although it operated from 1817 to 1819, the venture ultimately failed because of a lack of business, faulty equipment and a severe drought. Local legend adds that Audubon had the unhealthy habit of leaving both businesses unattended while pursuing his true passion of tracking and sketching wildlife. Audubon left Henderson, as he later wrote, “keeping only the clothes I wore on that day, my original drawings, and my gun, and without a dollar in my pocket,” and walked to Louisville. There, because of his financial difficulties, he was briefly placed in debtor’s prison. Today, Audubon Mill Park, named in honor of the historic mill, sits on the riverfront between First and Second streets and is home to both the W.C. Handy Blues & BBQ Festival and the Bluegrass in the Park Folklife and Music Festival.
Fun Fact: Several years later, while sailing on the Ohio River, Audubon passed the mill and referred to it as “that infernal mill.” His prediction proved fitting when the mill burned in 1913. Today, some of the original millstones form a gateway at the eastern entrance to Audubon Mill Park, while another millstone is preserved on the park’s northwest corner. FIRST VEHICLE BRIDGE OVER THE OHIO
In 1932, about 4,000 people attended the dedication of the first vehicle bridge connecting Henderson and Evansville. The bridge, now the northbound span of the twin bridges, was built for approximately $2.4 million, with the federal government paying half and Kentucky and Indiana splitting the remainder. The three-day celebration began on July 4, 1932, when the governors of Kentucky and Indiana walked across the bridge from opposite directions and shook hands in the middle. Festivities continued at Dade Park, now Ellis Park, where the crowd welcomed Ralph Modjeski and Frank Masters, the two worldfamous engineers who designed the bridge. Following the speeches, spectators were treated to a flyover by a squadron of 22 Army airplanes led by Jimmy Doolittle, then one of the nation’s foremost stunt pilots and later a World War II hero. Fun Fact: When it opened, the bridge charged a toll of 30 cents for cars carrying up to five passengers and 35 cents for cars carrying up to seven passengers. Pedestrians paid 5 cents to cross, while steam shovels and threshing machines paid $5. The toll ended March 20, 1941.
RAYMOND GRAF STATUES
Sprinkled throughout downtown Henderson and Audubon State Park are bronze sculptures created by Louisville artist Raymond Graf. The collection, begun in 2002, presents Graf’s three-dimensional interpretations of Audubon paintings featured in The Birds of America. Thirteen of the sculptures include an added surprise — a small creature hidden on the back — encouraging visitors to look more closely.
Fun Fact: Another Graf sculpture is the life-sized depiction of Audubon, wrapped in fringed leather with a musket slung at his side and his eyes fixed on a pelican a few feet away. Located at Audubon Mill Park, it remains a favorite photo spot for visitors.
ADMIRAL HUSBAND KIMMEL
Fun Fact: Husband Kimmel’s father, Major Manning Marius Kimmel, was a West Point graduate and Army veteran who famously fought on both sides of the Civil War.
The statue along the Ohio River near Second Street is another Raymond Graf creation, honoring Henderson native Admiral Husband Kimmel. Along with six siblings, Kimmel grew up in a large frame farmhouse at 512 N. Green St. At age 16, he graduated as valedictorian of Henderson High School and later graduated with honors from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1904. Kimmel later served as commander of the U.S. Pacific Fleet
on Dec. 7, 1941 — “a date which will live in infamy” — when Japan attacked Pearl Harbor. Henderson’s Kimmel Field is named in his honor.
IN CLOSING
When visitors finish a tour of Henderson, they invariably comment on the city’s beauty and cleanliness, its fascinating stories and the genuine friendliness of its residents. For me, however, Henderson is much more than a collection of attractive streets, historic tales and welcoming faces. Henderson is my true sense of place — the city I will always be proud to call home.

o you like to play games? Maybe cards? Rummy, perhaps? Do you enjoy gathering with friends to laugh, socialize, and share stories? Are you just a little competitive? If you answered yes to any of these questions, then Mahjong just may be the perfect game for you. Over the last few years, Mahjong has exploded in popularity across the country — and our area is no exception. What was once considered a game played mostly by older generations has suddenly become the hottest social gathering for people of all ages. From retirees to young professionals, Mahjong nights are replacing Bunco groups, happy hours, and even book clubs. And honestly, it is easy to see why.
MY INTRODUCTION TO MAHJONG
Mahjong
The Game Bringing Friends Together Again Written by E L L E N R E D D I N G
62 Henderson Living A U G U S T / / S E P T E M B E R 2 0 2 6
I first learned how to play a couple of years ago. Like most beginners, I was completely overwhelmed at first. The tiles, the card, the strange terms like “Craks,” “Bams,” and “Dots” — it all felt like learning a foreign language. As I excitedly explained my new hobby to my 92-year-old mother, she casually informed me that she already knew how to play and even had her own set tucked away. To say I was surprised would be an understatement. She told me she had played with a group of women years ago, sometime around 2000, although she preferred bridge with her friends. That conversation opened my eyes to the rich history and longstanding tradition of Mahjong. I, however, became hooked immediately. Not long after, I mentioned Mahjong to my daughter-in-law in Houston, Texas. Once again, I realized I was late to the trend. She and her friends had already learned the game and established a weekly neighborhood Mahjong night. That seems to be the pattern everywhere.
MORE THAN JUST A GAME
Today, Mahjong is much more than a game. It has become an experience. People gather around tables with colorful racks and beautiful tile sets, sharing appetizers, sipping wine, laughing, and catching up on life. In a world where so much communication happens through screens and text messages, Mahjong offers something many people have been missing: real connection. There is something special about sitting around a
table for several uninterrupted hours with friends. Phones
are

New friendships form. I now have my own beautiful Mahjong set, and it travels with me. Last month, my sisters and I took a trip to St. Louis and decided to set up a game in the hotel lobby. Before
long,
people
were
stopping to watch, ask questions, and share their own Mahjong stories. Several even asked if they could join us. That is one of the things I love most about Mahjong — it creates instant community.
SO, WHAT EXACTLY IS MAHJONG
Mahjong is a tile-based game
traditionally played with four people, although it can also be played with two or three players. Much like a deck of cards, Mahjong has suits. Instead of hearts, diamonds, clubs, and spades, players work with Craks, Bams, and Dots, along with Winds, Dragons, Flowers, Jokers, and blanks. Still confused? You are not alone. Most beginners feel overwhelmed during their first lesson. I certainly did.
But
somewhere
between
learning the tiles and completing your first winning hand, the game suddenly clicks — and that is when the obsession begins. Mahjong
combines
strategy,
memory, concentration, luck, and social interaction all at once. Every game is different, which keeps players constantly challenged. And yes, it is incredibly addictive.
A GAME WITH DEEP ROOTS
Mahjong’s history dates back to 19th-century China, where the game originated before eventually spreading throughout the world. In 1937, a group of Jewish women in New York City formed what is now known as the National Mah Jongg League. Their goal was to standardize the rules and create official hands for American Mahjong. Today, the League releases a new card every year featuring updated hands and combinations, keeping the game fresh and exciting for longtime players. What fascinates me most is how Mahjong has bridged generations and cultures. My mother played. Younger people are now rediscovering it. Teenagers are learning. Some families are even teaching their children to play. Few games have that kind of staying power.
WHY EVERYONE IS TALKING ABOUT MAHJONG
If you remember the days when your monthly Bunco group was the highlight of your social calendar, then you already understand the appeal. We all crave connection. Mahjong nights offer an excuse to gather, laugh, eat good food, share stories, and simply enjoy being together. Whether you are a busy young mom, a retiree looking for community, or someone searching for a new hobby, Mahjong creates space for friendships to grow. I have friends all over the United States now learning to play. My daughter-in-law in Texas has her regular weekly group. Another daughter-in-law in Florida wants lessons. My best friend in Cincinnati

THE BEST PART OF ALL
At the end of the day, Mahjong is not really about the tiles. It is about gathering around a table with people you enjoy. It is about challenging your brain, learning something new, and sharing laughter with friends. It is about slowing down long enough to be fully present with one another. In a world that often feels rushed and disconnected, perhaps that is exactly why Mahjong is making such a strong comeback. And who knows? Maybe it is time for you to learn too.

design, centuries-old traditions
and a desire to help people slow down come together? For husband-and-wife team Jon and Kyle Hittner, the answer is MELT, a unique sauna and cold plunge experience that is introducing a fresh concept to Western Kentucky while creating spaces designed for connection, conversation and rest. Inspired by sauna cultures
around
the
world,
particularly
Nordic-style sauna traditions, as well as the growing popularity of contrast therapy in larger cities, the Hittners saw an opportunity to bring something different to the region. From the beginning, however, their vision extended beyond simply offering a sauna. Instead, they set out to create environments where people could disconnect from screens, reconnect with one another and experience the benefits of heat, cold and intentional downtime in an approachable setting. “Jon and I built MELT because we wanted to create a place where people could slow down a little,” Kyle Hittner said. “The temperatures are a huge part of the experience. The sauna is genuinely hot, the plunges are genuinely cold and there’s something really powerful about stepping away from your phone and sharing that experience with other people for 90 minutes.”

or our “Best Of” issue, chocolate and coffee just felt like the obvious choice (because
honestly, is there anything better?). They're comforting, classic, and kind of impossible to beat. This chocolate espresso cake brings them together in the best way, with rich cocoa flavor and just enough coffee to deepen every bite without overpowering it. It’s the kind of dessert that feels a little indulgent but still easy to love. Simple, cozy, and really, really good. And because we fully support your coffee habit, we’re also including a homemade latte recipe so you can go all in. Sipping a latte while baking a chocolate espresso cake just seems "right."
Chocolate Espresso Layer Cake with Whipped Espresso Ganache CAKE LAYERS:
1 ¾ cups all-purpose flour ¾ cup dark cocoa powder (Dutch process if possible) 2 cups sugar 2 tsp baking soda 1 tsp baking powder 1 tsp salt 2 tsp espresso powder 2 eggs 1 cup buttermilk ½ cup oil (vegetable or canola) 2 tsp vanilla 1 cup very hot strong coffee

Catching Up With Henderson Family Magazine’s First Cover Kid Written by D A N I E L L E C R A F T O N
T
en years ago, a sweet 2 year old named Hadley Mathis stole the hearts of Henderson Family Magazine readers when she was selected as our cover kid from a field of 756 entries. Fast forward a decade, and that adorable toddler is now a confident, fun-loving 12-year-old with big dreams and plenty of memories made along the way. Looking back at her cover photo today, Hadley can’t help but smile. “I think about how cute I was,” she said with a laugh. “And how cool it was that I won out of 756 people!” According to her parents, she was a pretty easygoing toddler, especially compared with her siblings. “My parents have told me that I was very easy to deal with, or at least compared to my siblings when they were 2 years old,” she said. Today, life looks a little different. At 12, Hadley’s schedule is filled with friends, shopping trips, swimming, watching her favorite shows

and, most importantly, cheerleading. Even though she has grown up, some things haven’t changed. Hadley still enjoys many of the same activities she loved as a little girl, including drawing, coloring, reading, swimming and spending time outdoors. Over the years, she has built a collection of memories she treasures. Some of her favorites include golf cart rides around town, Saturdays at Eastgate, birthday parties with friends, family beach vacations to Florida, nights spent with her Geddie and Paw-Paw, and trips to Holiday World. When asked what makes her laugh the most these days, her answer was simple: her friends. She also credits her great-grandparents as some of the people she looks up to most. “They’ve always been important to me,” she said. One accomplishment Hadley is especially proud of is being named Student of the Year by her math
teacher. If her 2-year-old self could somehow see her today, she thinks the reaction would be pretty amusing. “My 2-year-old self would probably say I was cool and really tall,” she joked. Looking ahead, she already has her sights set on a meaningful career. “My biggest dream is to become a NICU nurse and be rich!” she said with a laugh. By age 22, she hopes to have a good relationship, a home of her own and financial stability as she begins building her future. When asked what advice she would give younger children, her response showed wisdom beyond her years. “Always keep going and find people along the way who are supportive. Enjoy living in Henderson. There are nice people here!” As the magazine celebrates another milestone, it’s special to look back at the children who have graced
our covers and see the remarkable young people they are becoming. While 10 years have passed since this former cover kid first smiled for our camera, one thing remains the same: Her bright future is just getting started.
