Since following the construction updates and announcements from day one, we’ve gathered the essential info for families looking to explore this brand-new theme park, whether you're raising a mini-Mario Kart champion or a young wizard-in-training, let’s explore how to PLAY at this ALL-NEW attraction!
What Is Epic Universe?
Epic Universe is Universal’s fourth theme park, located about 15 minutes south of Universal Studios and Islands of Adventure. It’s packed with five immersive lands that are accessed through themed portals—meaning you can’t just cut across from one land to the next like in other parks. Each land feels like its own mini-park: ph
SUPER NINTENDO WORLD Race through Mario Kart, explore Bowser’s Castle and Donkey Kong Country
How to PLAY: Step into the world of Mario Kart: Bowser's Challenge, an interactive ride that combines augmented reality with physical sets. Compete against friends and family as you race through iconic courses collecting coins and dodging obstacles (minimum height requirement of 40 inches). Yoshi’s Adventure is a slow-moving ride perfect for those that prefer chill over thrill (minimum height requirement of 34 inches, under 48 inches requires supervising companion).
HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON – ISLE OF BERK Viking fun, dragon flights, and splash zones

Preserving Our Natural World: How These Local Attractions Are More Than Just a Place to Spend the Day by Brie Gorecki
While visiting the zoo or the aquarium is meant to provide a fun experience to see and learn about various animals, they’re more than just attractions. Check out how some of your favorite animal attractions in Central Florida are more than just a place to play.
SEAWORLD ORLANDO 7007 Sea World Drive, Orlando SeaWorld may be known for their heart-racing roller coasters and amazing animal acts, but beyond that, they are a certified marine rescue facility, with over 41,000 rescues and counting. Their rescue team is on call 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and 365 days a year. They partner with multiple government agencies, conservationists, zoological facilities, and others to help animals in need of care. Their main goal is to rescue and rehabilitate to return home; however, in extreme cases where the animal might be deemed non-releasable, they’ll receive lifelong care at SeaWorld or at another accredited facility.
CENTRAL FLORIDA ZOO 3755 W. Seminole Blvd., Sanford The Central Florida Zoo is home to over 350 animals that represent 100 different species. It’s one of a small number of private, nonprofit Association of Zoos & Aquariums accredited zoos in the country and has offers several educational experiences for children of all ages. In addition to being a safe haven for all types of animals, it’s also home to the Orianne Center for Indigo Conservation, focusing on Eastern Indian Snake conservation and Striped Newt conservation. Aside from the multiple conservation and education programs that are offered, families can also participate in their monthly Conservation Days. DISNEY'S ANIMAL KINGDOM Animal Kingdom opened on Earth Day in 1998, following the initiation of the Disney Conservation Fund in 1995. It was established as a state-of-the-art animal park and conservation center of excellence. Through its attractions and experiences, guests can learn about the natural world through both real-life and imagined representations of animals and locations, all while learning about conservation efforts. Last year the park celebrated the arrival of baby boy Sumatran tiger, Bakso, who serves as a beacon of hope for this critically endangered species which has fewer than 600 individuals left in the wild. Keep an eye out for him along the path of the Maharajah Jungle Trek!

The new SEA LIFE is dubbed as a “Theme Park Under the Sea” experience. Families will be able to explore over 25 immersive exhibits, including the new Stingray Bay, touch pools for hands-on encounters, and special themed environments. The aquarium uses a special state-of-the-art Life Support System to maintain optimal conditions for every species. WESH 2’s Tony Mainolfi Shares What Orlando Families Need to Know This Hurricane Season

When a storm is brewing in the tropics, Central Florida parents know to keep an eye on WESH 2’s Chief Meteorologist Tony Mainolfi. With decades of experience forecasting severe weather, Tony has become a trusted voice for Orlando families — especially during hurricane season. We recently connected with Tony to talk about how families can prepare, and why staying weather-aware is more important than ever.

WHAT MAKES CENTRAL FLORIDA STORMS UNIQUE? “Hurricanes often weaken before reaching us, but we can't let our guard down,” Tony explains. “Inland flooding and tornadoes spawned by tropical systems are real threats for our area.” Unlike coastal communities, Central Florida doesn’t face the same storm surge risks, but heavy rainfall and power outages are frequent concerns. With our lakes and other bodies of water flooding is a possibility, and other severe events like tornadoes can be a concern. Plus, with more new housing developments sprouting up all the time, there is more flooding. Local municipalities and counties are working with buildiner to mitigate flooding. Tony notes that even a weaker tropical system can cause days of disruption, especially when school schedules and work routines are affected. “We’re keeping a close eye on early season activity,” Tony says. “Every season is different, but the key is being prepared before a storm is even named.”

TONY’S TIPS FOR ORLANDO FAMILIES Have a plan now. Talk with your kids about what to expect during a storm — where you’ll go, how you’ll stay safe, and what to do if the power goes out.
Know your flood zone. Even areas far from the coast can experience flash flooding. Check your address at floridadisaster.org to understand your risk.
Restock the basics. Don't wait for the cone of uncertainty to head your way. Stock up on essentials like batteries, shelf-stable food, and medications in advance.
Be weather-aware. Follow reliable sources like WESH 2 and download trusted weather apps. Tony’s forecasts are also available on social media, where he regularly shares real-time updates and family-friendly explanations.
Keep the kids calm. “Children take cues from us,” Tony says. “If we stay calm and confident in our preparations, it helps them feel safe too.”
A FAMILIAR FACE FOR ORLANDO FAMILIES Tony Mainolfi has been guiding Orlando through hurricane seasons since 2005. A father himself, he understands the balance of staying informed while not creating panic — especially in households with young children. “We do this together,” he says. “And the more prepared we are as a community, the stronger we’ll be.”

Phones Down, Eyes Up! Keep Kids Safe in and Around Water This Summer by John Lewis, Associate Vice President of Aquatics, YMCA of Central Florida
At the YMCA, we believe that water safety starts with awareness—and that every parent and caregiver can be a hero when it comes to preventing drowning. As we head into summer, it's more important than ever to stay vigilant. Drowning is fast and often silent, and alarmingly, 60% of drownings happen within just 10 feet of safety. Even more concerning: 88% of child drownings occur under some form of supervision. That’s why for May’s National Water Safety Month, the YMCA is urging families to remember our new national PSA message: Phones Down, Eyes Up when at the pool, lakefront or ocean. This is a direct call for parents and caregivers to put phones and tablets down while children are playing in and around water.
WHAT YOU CAN DO Whether your child is near a pool, lake or beach, the most effective way to protect them is to set up multiple layers of defense around the water. These include: • Installing a four-sided fence around home pools • Using self-latching gates and alarms on doors and pool access points • Keeping pool and drain covers securely in place • Teaching children to ask permission before going near any water • Providing appropriate life jackets for open water outings These safeguards provide precious moments to respond if a child enters the water unsupervised—and they apply at home and while visiting family, friends or public spaces.
2. Take the Safety Around Water Pledge Drowning prevention doesn’t end when summer does. By taking the Safety Around Water Pledge, you’re joining a movement of families, caregivers and community leaders committed to keeping children safe in and around all types of water—every season of the year. The pledge is a promise to stay informed, be prepared and take action. It includes simple but powerful commitments like supervising children actively, enrolling them in swim lessons and sharing water safety tips with others. Don’t put your lunch boxes away just yet! If your kid is going to attend a summer camp, you’ll have to provide lunch. If this is news to you, no worries: I’ve got some simple ideas that will be a breeze to whip up and that you can pack the night before so you have time for that extra cup of coffee. Hey best friend, I’m Jenny! I love meal prep and lunchboxes, and packing lunch is something I actually enjoy doing for my family. Let’s pack a lunch they can’t refuse!
Here are some of my go-to summer camp lunches.
Homemade “Lunchables” are a favorite around here! Think cheese, crackers and protein like hummus, nut butter or turkey roll ups.
Stock up on Uncrustables or make your own. Freeze overnight and they’ll thaw by snack time or lunchtime. (I have a tutorial on @lunchboxmafia)

Tips for camp lunches Snack boxes that hold at least two cups of food are ideal for summer snacks and smaller meals. Check out EasyLunchBoxes and the Lunchbots Medium Trio (available on Amazon) or the Bentgo original stackable bento (pick it up at Target). Make sure your lunch bag is insulated. You can double up on ice packs or just get the freezable lunch bag from PackIt. It’s basically a giant ice pack in lunch bag form! Label everything. You probably won’t find cubbies or lockers like at school. Most of the time, personal items are tossed together in a bin. Hydration during hot Florida summers is super important. Get a water bottle they can refill at camp. Let them pick it out. Put their name on it.
Muffins, mini pancakes or waffles and scones are great too! They can be eaten at room temperature and kids love them.
Pack plenty of hydrating fruits and veggies like berries, grapes, pineapple, watermelon, cucumbers and tomatoes. (Always cut for toddlers so they can be enjoyed safely.) MAY/JUNE 2025 Orlando-Parenting.com 27

OPM: What inspired the concept of combining a café with a children's play area?
OPM: How do you balance the demands of running a business with personal and family life?
MC: My sister-in-law Jovana visited her sister in the Bay Area and came across a minimalist play space inside a modern café. That sparked memories of the play places we used to visit as kids, like those in fast food spots. We wondered why there weren’t more elevated spaces for parents to relax while kids played safely nearby. We put together a business plan, and the idea quickly grew from there.
MC: Balance is tricky, and I don’t think we’ve perfected it. For me, it’s about mindset. My word this year is “equanimity”—staying grounded even when things feel chaotic. Like ocean waves around planted feet, I try to stay rooted while letting the motion pass.
OPM: How does The Burrow cater to both parents and children, and what sets it apart from other play spaces? MC: We designed The Burrow with both kids and parents in mind. Our $10 “Pack Your Own Lunch” gives kids choices while offering parents healthier, allergy-friendly snacks. We also built in various seating areas so parents can choose how close they are to the play space, depending on their parenting style or their child’s age. The calm, natural aesthetic helps keep everyone grounded—something we all need in today’s fast-paced world. OPM: What role does The Burrow play in the local community, and how do you envision it evolving in the future? MC: Our goal is to be a true third place—a community space where everyone feels welcome, regardless of background or beliefs. We love seeing artists, creatives, and families gather here. Whether it’s someone knitting, playing chess, or working on watercolor, the energy in our space is what makes it special.

This spring, six remarkable high school students from Central Florida were selected to participate in the prestigious Disney Dreamers Academy at Walt Disney World Resort. This four-day program is designed to inspire and empower 100 teens from across the nation through career workshops, mentorship, and a touch of Disney magic. These young Dreamers engaged in immersive experiences, exploring various career paths and receiving guidance from industry leaders. The program emphasizes the importance of self-belief and determination. As Kaylee Pickford shared, “My dad encouraged me to apply. He told me, ‘You can do anything if you put your mind to it.’” The Academy also featured inspirational talks from notable figures. Actor Tyler James Williams, known for his role in Abbott Elementary, served as the 2025 DREAMbassador, encouraging students to embrace collaboration and creativity in their pursuits. The Disney Dreamers Academy continues to be a beacon of hope and inspiration, proving that with encouragement and opportunity, young people can achieve extraordinary things. As Somaya Russell aptly put it, “It’s OK not to know exactly what you want to do yet. Just take a step out on faith and try.”

Somaya is a student at Oak Ridge High School in Orlando where she studies hospitality and serves as treasurer of Student Government. She is also a member of the Concert Choir and credits her mentors with helping her grow into a confident leader.

A Jones High School student, Diongela is part of the school’s medical magnet program with dreams of becoming a travel nurse specializing in labor and delivery. She enjoys bringing joy to others through her vibrant personality and community volunteering.

Kaitlyn is a Mount Dora Christian Academy student deeply involved in her school’s Biomedical Sciences Institute, drama program, and chorus. She volunteers for medical missions and plans to major in biological sciences with hopes of making a positive impact in healthcare.
