Walt Disney World’s Magic Kingdom
In The Zone Next time you’re catching a flight from MCO, keep your eyes out for the airport’s new Family Zones. These designated kid-friendly areas offer a reprieve from waiting at the gate. The Flybrary, a playful library and reading nook, was the first area to open in Terminal C, and it’s now joined by a soft play space which includes a carpet donning a colorful Florida map and climbing structures in Terminal A, and an interactive Family Zone in Terminal B that boasts motion-based games where players can compete and move.
Piston Peak Rides: A Cars land is coming to Walt Disney World’s Magic Kingdom, fashioned after Piston Peak National Park. Now, we know two of the rides that’ll be revving their engines there: Ridge Run Rally and Miss Fritter’s Daredevil Spin-Along. Villains Land: Now that Villains Land is officially confirmed to be happening, a few details are emerging, from a thrilling Maleficent coaster to a dark ride themed around the Evil Queen’s Magic Mirror.

Gloves Up! If you have a child (or a husband) who can play catch for hours on end, then head to Catch Club, held every Tuesday evening at Baldwin Park’s Blue Jacket Park. Local father and baseball enthusiast, Aaron Bearden, decided to start this no-frills weekly hangout for parents and their kids to enjoy one of life’s simplest pleasures: Throwing a baseball. “This isn’t baseball practice. There’s no agenda, no set schedule and everyone is welcome. We’re just playing catch because catch is fun,” says Bearden. To celebrate the coziest time of year finally being here, we’ve rounded up festive ways to usher in the new season. From a themed kid’s party to pumpkin craft ideas to weekend getaways, here’s an unofficial guide to autumnal family fun — even if it’s not quite sweater weather yet.

OH MY GOURD! Five kid-friendly things to do with a pumpkin other than carve it.
1 Paint A Portrait
Floridians know you can’t carve a pumpkin and set it out too soon in the October humidity. One longer-lasting alternative is to paint it. While any design works, challenge kids to create a pumpkin person and design it after their favorite storybook character or celebrity.
2 Rinse and Repeat
If you have a toddler, never underestimate how long a bowl of water, a sponge, and some soap can provide entertainment. Buy a few mini pumpkins small enough to fit in little hands, then set out washable markers or paints. Let the kids color them before sending them to the bath! Kids will love scrubbing and cleaning the pumpkins and then doing it all over again.
3 Hammer Away
Practice fine motor skills by giving kids a pile of golf tees and a wooden hammer. Have them nail the tees into a pumpkin — bonus points if they can create a cool design or a letter with them. You can also try using Mr. Potato Head pieces!
4 Hide and Seek
5 little pumpkins … all want to play hide and seek! Start a daily spooky-season tradition by hiding little pumpkins around your house and having the kids go find them. It’s an easy game kids will love.
5 Bedazzle
Think gem art for gourds! Turn a pumpkin into a disco ball with stick-on gemstones. Challenge children to sparkle-ify them so much you can’t see any orange!

Jack O’ Lantern: As the name suggests, these tall, stand-up pumpkins are perfect for carving. Cinderella: Wider and flatter, this variation is more for decoration and looks great on a front doorstep. Plus, they come in a variety of hues like pale white to almost blue. Connecticut Field Pumpkin: This type is super sturdy, making it a popular choice for carving, and it’s frequently found at local patches. Sugar Pumpkin: Also known as a pumpkin pie or sweet pumpkin, it’s the best one to use in pies or other baking endeavors. Baby Boo: With its cute name and petite size, this little white pumpkin is ideal table décor and great for little hands to play with or decorate. Fun fact: The orange variety is called “Jack-Be-Little.” Baby Bear: Its size falls in between a sugar pumpkin and a Baby Boo, so it’s good for a toddler who wants something a little bigger than a mini one. Black Futsu: With bumpy and mottled skin that comes in black and green as well as orange, kiddos may think it has witch warts on it, but they’re great for decorating and ideal for someone looking for something a little atypical.

HOW TO MAKE A SUCCULENT PUMPKIN Craft a whimsical fall centerpiece that truly wows
Carving, painting, eating … there are so many things to do with pumpkins, but have you ever thought to adorn one with succulents? This genius idea is from Eileen Tongson, a local mom and the founder of FarmGal Flowers. Not only is this DIY simple enough for kids to do, but it’s also fun for parents too! When your masterpiece is complete, it can last well beyond Halloween, even all the way until Thanksgiving if you’re lucky. Has harvest décor ever looked so chic?
WHAT YOU NEED:

One Pumpkin
A Variety of Succulent Cuttings (approximately twelve succulents for a small pumpkin) Craft Adhesive Floral Adhesive or Craft Glue Forest Moss
DIRECTIONS:
1. First, choose your pumpkin. While Tongson prefers using a real one, fake styles work as well, and kids may have fun choosing a faux one in an unexpected shade like pink or silver. Spray craft adhesive on top of the pumpkin and apply an even layer of forest moss. 2. This step involves floral adhesive, so parents, it’s important to know how sticky its formula is. You may need to assist with the gluing or opt for craft glue instead, but please note that craft glue doesn’t dry as quickly. Gather the succulents and apply the adhesive to their bottoms, pressing them down into the moss. 3. While the design is ultimately up to you, Tongson recommends gluing the taller succulents towards the center, then surrounding them with the smaller plants. 4. Once dry, water the succulents by inserting the nozzle of a spray bottle between them and spraying the moss with water. Water one to two times a week. 5. Enjoy your succulent creation!

P.S. When it’s time to say goodbye to your pumpkin and usher in the holiday season, don’t throw your succulents out! Once you remove the succulents from the moss, fill a pot with succulent/cactus soil and then place the plants on top. Water once or twice weekly and add succulent fertilizer monthly. Just make sure the pot is in indirect sunlight.

When I Grow Up I Want To… Be A Scare Actor! by Maddy Zollo Rusbosin
If you attended SeaWorld Orlando’s Howl-O-Scream last year, then you may have encountered Shatter, a freakish burned woman, wandering the streets among many other ghastly ghouls and craven beings. For many Halloween enthusiasts, playing a favorite villain, not to mention getting paid to do so, is a dream come true. So how exactly do you become a person who gives nightmares for a living? Orlando Parenting Magazine chatted with Shatter herself about getting the coolest and creepiest gig in town.
OPM: Tell me a little about yourself and what led you to your current role as SeaWorld Howl-O-Scream scare actor? Shatter: I grew up in Miami wanting to be a child psychologist. Then, in high school, I was out at karaoke with my sister and my dad. My sister and I went up and sang “Hoedown Throwdown”. As we were walking off-stage, a lady approached me with a business card and said, "You are incredible. I'm the owner of this party company. We want you to come work for us." I started working as a costumed character at this party company for the entirety of high school. Once I started doing that, I was like, ‘I want to do this. I want to continue to do this. This is really fun.’ OPM: What kind of characters did you play? S: I did everything. I was Michael Jackson one time. I was Dora the Explorer, Dorothy the Dinosaur, Minnie Mouse. I also did face painting, DJing, hosting, balloon animals … all of the things! [At that time] my sister was living in Orlando, so I missed her and said, what’s a better place to move than Orlando? It was meant to be because the theme parks are there. When I first moved, I started performing with Gaylord Palms during their ICE! event when DreamWorks was still a part of it. I got to work with a few characters there, and then I moved on to SeaWorld’s Spooktacular before taking a few years off. OPM: Tell me about your most recent role at Howl-O-Scream? S: Last year, I was cast as Shatter in Ashes of the Forgotten [a postapocalyptic scare zone that’s ruled by the event’s icon character, Havoc]. I literally had the best season of my entire life. The guests responded to it extremely well, and I got to be extremely scary, which was really fun. To paint the scene, we were in essentially a scrap yard and part of Havoc’s world. Everyone there was really manic and crazy, full of havoc, if you will. OPM: What’s your transformation like – how long dids it take to get in character? S: In the middle of our scare zone, we had a fire pit, so we had burns all over us. We were kind of scuffed up and dirty. We kind of looked like bikers in a way, kind of punk rock-ish. From the time that I would clock in and get into costume and done with makeup, it would take about a little over an hour. OPM: How do you practice scaring people? S: For me personally, there's no way I can practice. I feed off the mood of the guest as they're coming in. I did have a few different bits though — like last year there was a girl cast in my zone, and we looked almost identical, so we’d pretend to be twin sisters. We would
walk around holding hands, and whenever one of us would squeeze, we would scream at the same time. OPM: Do you have a memorable scare experience? S: There was a younger girl who ended up coming every single weekend, and she was wonderful. On her very first night, I was the very first scare actor that she had ever interacted with. Naturally, I scared her, and she screamed bloody murder and dropped to the floor. Because we were the first scare zone, it was a holding area for the rest of the park since SeaWorld wasn't actually open yet. When she stood up, she tried to run through, literally moving guests out of her way to try to get away from me. Not that I was harassing her, but I was following behind. Then, when I heard her mom calling her name, I started calling her name too, and she freaked, ‘Oh my God, why does she know my name?’ OPM: What’s it like for your children to have a mom as a scare actor? S: My nine-year-old thinks it's really cool. My four-year-old is terrified of me. He does not like thinking about the fact that I get ugly and scary looking. He will not look at pictures of me when I am in my costume. He won't watch videos. He wants nothing to do with it. OPM: What advice would you give someone who wants to be a scare actor? S: I would tell them to really ground themselves and root into what they want and just go for it because the hardest part is really starting and auditioning.

Monsters Check In for a Spooktacular Family Day at SeaWorld Orlando by Stephanie Bechara
Drac, Mavis and their monster friends are packing their bags and checking in at SeaWorld Orlando this fall. For the first time, beloved characters from Hotel Transylvania are joining SeaWorld Orlando’s Halloween Spooktacular, bringing their delightfully silly monster world to the park’s annual family Halloween celebration. On select dates from Aug. 29 through Nov. 1, families can enjoy a full day of costumes, candy, colorful characters and not-too-spooky fun, all included with park admission. Little monsters can dance with Mavis and Johnny during the new Hotel Transylvania Dance Party, meet Drac and his friends, and snap plenty of photos along the way. Families looking to make the morning extra memorable can also purchase the separately ticketed Hotel Transylvania Monster Dread & Breakfast experience. The monster-sized morning includes a themed all-you-care-toenjoy buffet, character encounters, dancing and playful photo opportunities inside Drac’s vacation home.
Once everyone is fueled up, it is time to grab a Spooktacular reusable bag and hit the trickor-treat trail. Guests can collect goodies at 12 candy stations located throughout the park. SeaWorld’s Teal Pumpkin Program helps ensure children with food allergies can join the fun, too. Guests can collect teal tokens at each candy station and exchange them at Coconut Bay Traders for allergy-friendly treats. The Halloween fun continues around every corner. Families can wander through the whimsical Pumpkin Garden, search for friendly pumpkin fish and settle in for a seasonal tale from the garden’s Storyteller. Along the Spooky Bubble Trail, floating bubbles, playful surprises and cheerful Spooktacular Pals create a picture-perfect adventure for younger children. Familiar favorites are also joining the celebration. Elmo, Cookie Monster, Abby Cadabby, Count von Count and their Sesame Street friends will take to the streets in colorful costumes during the Sesame Street Halloween Parade. Families can also gather around Big Bird’s nest for Halloween stories, meet Spookley the Square Pumpkin and enjoy festive seasonal treats.
Costumes are encouraged, so children can arrive dressed as their favorite character, animal or ocean explorer. Parents are welcome to join the fun, making Spooktacular an easy opportunity for a coordinated family costume and those all-important Halloween photos. At the heart of the day are the incredible animals that make SeaWorld Orlando unlike any other Halloween outing. Between dance parties, candy stops and character encounters, families can explore animal habitats and learn about marine life together. Spooky Season Takes Over Jock Lindsey’s Hangar Bar at Disney Springs
A terrifyingly cute way to celebrate Halloween with your Sweetheart by Hailea Boykin
It’s no secret that holidays at the Walt Disney World properties and attractions are unmatched when it comes to décor, immersion, ambiance, and theming. While the parks seamlessly transform overnight into their fall and Halloween adornments, Disney Springs undergoes a spooky transformation of its own! From seasonal merchandise to hauntingly good treats, spirited beverages, and exclusive menu items, Walt Disney World continues the autumnal magic outside the parks this year with their “Fall into the Magic” celebration. One of our favorite spots, Jock Lindsey’s Hangar Bar, has some tricks (and treats) up its sleeve! First off, is the iconic décor. Just like Jock Lindsey’s itself, it’s very nostalgic and inspired by the 1940’s Halloween aesthetic. Think: purple, orange, and green tinsel garlands with spook-tacular ornaments, black cat diecuts, and vintage light-up pumpkins. The star of the show, however, is definitely the seasonal menu items, because how many times can you say you’ve eaten off of a candelabra? The mind behind the menu is Chef Gary Miles, who has been a part of Jock Lindsey’s Hangar Bar for ten years. “I'm not looking at just a plate as a plate. I'm looking at what can we make? What can we create? Who are our vendors that can make this stuff for us? So, I work with them. I kind of give them my vision, and then they put it to use,” says Miles. One of the fan-favorite items, the Alien Invader Sliders, has made its return, and this year it’s served on a flying saucer. “One of the things that I take into consideration is when you serve stuff in a different way, you want people to understand what it is when it comes out to the
table,” states Miles. The Bone Kebabs are served on the “bone” right out of a screaming wooden coffin, and the Candelabra Eggs look like flames sitting right in the sconce of the candelabra! Since Jock Linsey’s is known for their Deviled Eggs (typically served on an airplane), Miles knew the popular dish needed to bring some Halloween flair. In addition to the seasonal appetizers, there are also some delicious seasonal spirits, like the Temple of Doom Margarita with a spooky black coloring and black sugared rim, the Skull and Sour, featuring apple-flavored popping pearls and gummy strands, and a few other frightful concoctions. Experience Jock Lindsey’s Halloween overlay, seasonal menu, and other “Fall into the Magic” experiences at other locations around Disney Springs!

Moms to Know Emily Carragher
Cirque du Soleil Drawn To Life performer If you’ve already seen Cirque du Soleil’s Drawn To Life than you likely already know who Emily Carragher is. The New York native plays Miss Hesitation, one of the most prominent roles in the show (and not to mention the main antagonist!). When she’s not entertaining crowds with her comedic yet villainous antics, at home Carragher is playing her biggest part to date: A first-time mom. Orlando Parenting Magazine caught up with Carragher about her journey as both a performer and a parent: OPM: Tell me when you decided to pursue a career as a performer. Emily Carragher: As a kid, I was always interested in theatre and performing and then I saw Cirque du Soleil and I decided I wanted to become a clown. I went to a clown program and I loved it. I actually couldn’t afford to go to the second half of it, but they let me come back anyway and even helped me get my first contract at Ringling Brothers. So, my biggest takeaway was probably the connections I made there with the industry professionals that taught me. It was also the first time that I really got to explore my own clown character, which is just me times a thousand! OPM: What was it like performing at Ringling Brothers? EC: Performing for Ringling was tough. It was my first time being on the road, away from home, and I was so homesick and depressed. But making people laugh is somehow easier when you’re sad, so I just immersed myself in the work and tried to learn as much as I could about the circus world. The most important thing I learned at Ringling was that I didn’t want to be there. Ringling is an American circus and has a traditional three-ring set-up, and I really wanted to work in a European-styled, one-ring circus. So, I started all over again at the bottom as a laborer at the Big Apple Circus back home in New York and worked my way up as a technician to the Ring Crew, finally getting to work in the show. And I’m eternally grateful for my time there because it was very educational to work on the other side of things backstage. Every performer should work as a technician. OPM: How did you get involved with Cirque du Soleil? What was that transition like? EC: I saw Cirque du Soleil when I was a kid, and it changed me forever. In my early 20’s, I received an invitation to audition for them in New York City, and when I passed, it was the biggest feeling of validation that I’ve ever felt. Like all my hard work and dreaming had finally paid off! Then, while I was in their casting pool for the next few years, I kept on working and studying until I got a call for an opening in their touring show, Varekai, which I joined at the end of 2014. I toured with Varekai for three years through North America, Europe, Russia, and the Middle East until it closed in 2017. OPM: Tell me about your role as Miss Hesitation. I know you've played her for some time now — have you felt like your experience being her has changed over time? EC: In 2019, we started creation on Drawn to Life, and I originated the character Miss Hesitation. I’ve played her for almost 5 years now! She’s
the villain of our story, which is really fun because she gets to be mean and cruel, but then she gets redemption at the end, which not every villain gets. The role has definitely changed for me over the years. When we first opened, she wasn’t as defined as she is now. The audience has really helped me shape her, made her clearer, funnier, and without them, I wouldn’t know what works and what doesn’t! OPM: Miss Hesitation’s makeup is amazing! What's it like transforming into her each evening? EC: Thank you! The Miss Hesitation make-up is probably the most complicated in the entire show. It takes me about an hour and a half to do it each night, fifty minutes if I’m in a rush, but I really enjoy transforming myself into her. I feel like she’s pretty vain, as most evil queens are, so she takes a lot of pride in her appearance. I like to make her edges sharp enough to cut yourself on! OPM: I heard you're a new mom — congrats! How has motherhood changed your experience being a performer? EC: I’m definitely a different performer now that I’m a mom. I feel like I’ve slowed down a lot. Not just literally. I feel like my rhythm on-stage has changed to allow for more patience and listening. Our story is about a little girl, so when I came back from maternity leave, the show felt even more close to home. I understood it better. And now, whenever I see children in the audience, I try to see my own daughter in them, imagining what it will be like for her to watch the show one day. OPM: What's been the biggest surprise becoming a mom? EC: The biggest surprise? Probably that I haven’t forgotten her at the supermarket yet. I don’t know. I’m very surprised by how easy it all felt, honestly. I felt like a mom so quickly. It all felt so … natural. I remember that first time I was driving her to the babysitters by myself, and I looked back at her in the rearview mirror and thought, ‘Gee, I used to be the one sitting in the backseat!’ — and now I’m the one in the driver’s seat. It really is awesome being a mom. It’s tough, but that smile makes it all worth it. OPM: Any advice for fellow new moms trying to juggle motherhood and their careers? EC: My advice to moms is DON’T FORGET YOURSELF! When people ask you, ‘Who are the most important people in your life?’ don’t forget to list yourself first. No, it’s not selfish. The American Academy of Pediatrics recognizes that dairy contains seven of the 14 key nutrients important for early brain development. And there are big reasons why they recommend dairy milk and water as the go-to beverages for children between the ages of 1 and 5. • NUTRIENTS: One 8-ounce glass of milk contains 13 essential nutrients such as calcium, protein, phosphorus, riboflavin, iodine and vitamins D, A, B12 and B5. • IMMUNITY: Protein, selenium, zinc and vitamins A, B12 and D from dairy can help build a strong immune system. • BONE HEALTH: Calcium, vitamin D, protein, phosphorus, potassium and zinc play big roles in developing healthy bones.
Different Stages, Different Dairy Options
Because it is not recommended that infants under 12 months drink milk, increasing your dairy intake when pregnant is key, especially for the increase in iodine. Iodine deficiency is one of the leading causes of intellectual disabilities around the globe. Once babies reach 6 months, foods like unsweetened whole milk yogurt, cheese, cereals and other pureed forms of dairy can be introduced. At 12 months, whole milk can be added into a baby’s diet in moderation to help with both brain development and growth spurts.

Swim Safety For All Seasons How Alma Swim Foundation is instilling confidence throughout Central Florida by Maddy Zollo Rusbosin
When Danielle Hodge was around five years old, she nearly drowned. Thankfully, her brother was there to pull her out of the pool, but that moment stayed with her. “As I got older, I realized how common that story was within the Black community and how many people never had the opportunity to learn how to swim,” she explains. The Brooklyn native moved to Altamonte Springs when she was two and spent her childhood there, eventually moving to New York. Hodge returned to the Sunshine State in 2016 to be closer to family, and it was then that she first launched Alma Ocean, a line of culturally inspired aquatic accessories like inflatable floats, pools and towels, in hopes of bringing more diversity into the pool and beach accessory market. “I knew that representation with products wasn't enough. We also needed resources, access, and education. That's what led me to launch Alma Swim Foundation,” she says. Fast forward to today, and both Alma Ocean and Alma Swim Foundation are working hand-in-hand towards the same goal. “I often say I'm on a mission to get more melanin in the water because, for far too long, many Black families have been disconnected from swimming due to historical barriers, lack of access, and generational fear around water. I'm passionate about changing that narrative,” Hodge says. “I want Black children to grow up seeing swimming not as something that's ‘not for us,’ or that ‘we don’t do,’ but as a life-saving skill, a form of wellness, a source of joy, and a space where they belong.” According to Hodge, the biggest hurdle people face is the fear and anxiety that comes with learning to swim. Layer on the fact that lessons can be expensive, transportation can be challenging, and many families don’t know where to start or who to trust, and it begins to feel like an impossible task, especially for older kids or adults who’ve spent much of their life avoiding the water. “That's why our work is about more than teaching swimming. It's about breaking cycles, building confidence, and helping families see that the water can be a place of joy, not fear,” continues Hodge. She recalls one story about an Eatonville resident named Robin who spent her entire life afraid of the water. After hearing about Alma Swim’s lessons, it sparked her curiosity, leading her to go home, change into a swimsuit, and return. After a few lessons, she was doing things she never thought possible and began trusting herself in a totally new way. “She even joined us on a surf outing,” explains Hodge. “I'll never forget watching her get up on a surfboard. Here was a woman who had spent years avoiding the water, and now she was on a surfboard, smiling from ear to ear. I was in complete awe. Not just because of her progress, but because I was witnessing the impact of this work unfold right before my eyes.” Since Alma Swim Foundation formed in 2013, the organization has helped more than 2,000 children and adults gain access to swim lessons and water safety resources and raised funds to support community programming and lifeguard scholarships. “We’re not just teaching people how to swim. We’re creating pathways into aquatics careers and helping build a more diverse aquatic workforce,” says Hodge. “My favorite thing is when a family reaches out looking for swim lessons and then later comes back as a volunteer, donor, advocate, or partner. That's how I know we’re building a true community, not just a program.”
5 SWIM SAFETY RULES: Teach Kids to Respect All Water 1 Many parents focus on pools, but lakes, ponds, beaches, retention ponds, and even bathtubs can be dangerous. Water safety should be taught everywhere.
2 Make Sure Children Know How to Call 911
In an emergency, every second matters. Older children should know how to recognize an emergency and call for help.
3 Put the Phone Down
When children are in or near water, avoid scrolling, texting, or taking long phone calls. Water watching requires your full attention. Most people imagine splashing, yelling, and waving for help. In reality, drowning is usually silent.
Swim Locations 4 Choose with Trained Lifeguards
When possible, swim at pools, beaches, and water parks where certified lifeguards are present. Layers of protection matter when it comes to water safety.
5 Learn CPR
Kids can actually learn CPR too! We teach it at our annual April Pools Day event to the kids in partnership with the Red Cross. CPR can save a life before emergency responders arrive. Every parent, grandparent, caregiver, and babysitter should know it.

Exciting Updates Coming to Your Library by Steve Powell, Library Director/CEO
Have you heard? Your Orlando Public Library is getting a new look! This August, we kicked off construction for the renovation of the first floor of the Orlando Public Library – its first upgrade in more than 20 years. Orlando Public Library welcomes about 1,300 visitors per day, and nearly 400 of those guests visit the Children’s Library. This project is phased to allow the current Children’s Library to remain open during construction, ensuring uninterrupted service for families, while expanding for much-needed space and additional amenities. Enlarging the space to approximately 20,000 square feet, the new Children’s Library will feature programming rooms, reading areas, a Florida wetlands-themed play area, dedicated sensory and lactation rooms, and more. It will be a place where families can spend time in a space designed specifically for their needs. Since adults may not use the space on their own without a child, the renovation will include a new monitored entrance that helps direct visitors and reinforces the area’s familyfocused purpose. The first-floor renovations will also bring enhanced lighting on the exterior overhang and surrounding sidewalks, creating a more welcoming entrance. Two digital signboards on the face of the building will showcase a variety of library offerings, and inside, the updated lobby will feature directional wayfinding lighting to make navigating a breeze. A family restroom with a universal changing table will increase downtown accessibility. This investment in a new Children’s Library and enhanced first-floor amenities is more than just an investment in a building. It’s an investment in the community and another step toward creating the vibrant downtown experience residents and visitors want in their city.
