Entering its 15th year, the Lake Martin Resource Association’s Renew Our Rivers is still going strong removing litter and trash from the shorelines and roadways surrounding Lake Martin. LMRA’s John Thompson explained some of the trash has been there for decades and the group’s efforts are finally paying off. “We are making a big dent in this, especially the old trash,” Thompson said. “We are making an impact.” This year’s event is set for Nov. 3 and Nov. 4. Thompson says volunteers are already lining up to help. “We have a lot of volunteers stepping up,” Thompson said. “We have a fishing group coming from Auburn. They will be out at Paces Point at the boat ramp and that area. “We have school groups coming out. We will have the BRHS Navy ROTC. Scouting groups will be at Wind Creek. Russell associates will be out on Highway 63 from Ourtown to the thrift store Friday.” Thompson said some of the cleanup is already underway by one group he is proud of. “We have a crew from Atlanta in the Sturdivant area,” Thompson said. “They are already bagging trash.” Volunteers will be manning dumpsters at the Real Island Marina, Kowaliga public boat ramp, Wind Creek Park Marina and See CLEANUP • Page A8
Father-son-duo rejoin forces in DA’s office By CLIFF WILLIAMS Staff Writer
The father-son-duo of Charles and Kevin Hall once practiced law together in Dadeville until Kevin accepted the position of Assistant District Attorney in the Fifth Judicial Circuit under newly elected District Attorney Jeremy Duerr, leaving Charles alone in private practice. Duerr had his eyes on Kevin almost from the moment he started to practice law. “Paul (E. Paul Jones) and I had talked about if we ever

had any extra money about approaching Kevin,” Duerr said. “He was young, just out of school and eager to get started. We watched him in court and liked the way he handled himself.” Duerr knew one slot was available in the district attorney’s office after winning the election to replace the retiring Jones. “When I won the election, my seat would be open,” Duerr said. “I went to Paul and said I think we need to try to get Kevin. We both stepped out and reached out to Kevin. It was Paul that officially hired him but under
my direction.” Kevin’s hire meant father Charles would be solo in the practice but it would not be for long as a part time slot became available in the district office. “I had asked him if he was mad at me for taking his law partner away,” Duerr said. “We talked and I could tell he missed working with his son. When we did get that spot open I went to Charles and asked him. He said he wanted to think about it but I could Cliff Williams / The Record tell he was trying to hide his excitement.” Kevin and Charles hall pose for a photograph in the courtroom of the Courthouse Charles quickly followed Annex in Alexander City.
