County schools approve capital plan By COREY ARWOOD Staff Writer

Tallapoosa County School Board met for its annual meeting Tuesday where the board swore in a new member before deciding on a number of issues facing county schools and later addressed concerns of parents. Votes were taken on seven funds and facilities items, and five personnel decisions were approved. A Capital Improvement Plan was approved which had received attention in the past from board members

and the public in regards to the items on the plan and their placement in order of importance. However the board members discussed a revised plan Tuesday, which had placed improvements at Dadeville Elementary School at the top of the list regarding what project would receive funding among county schools. “I’m really pleased to see that the project we have for the elementary school is No. 1, because I just felt that was the best thing,” said board member Matilda Woodyard-Hamilton. The board chair asked if there were any questions

from other members regarding the plan, and the consensus was that the members present agreed the changes decided in recent work sessions were appropriate. Superintendent Joseph Windle was not at the meeting, however all five board members were. Talks at previous meetings had centered on what projects would receive precedence and funding when it were available. According to prior comments from Windle repairs to Dadeville Elementary School would be second See SCHOOL • Page 3

BLACK FRIDAY

Experts offer tips for shopping sales, Cyber Monday By DAVID GRANGER Staff Writer

The holiday shopping season is here and it kicks into a manic (for some) overdrive on Friday, better known over the past several years as “Black Friday,” a day when deals are plenty and frenzied shoppers, too. So what are some things the Black Friday shopper – and perhaps the shopper of the more newly named prime shopping

day, Cyber Monday, too – should know before they brave the crazed crowds or sit down at their keyboards to shop for those holiday treasures? WalletHub, a website “dedicated to helping people efficiently attain top WalletFitness™ so they may enjoy life instead of worrying about money,” asked several experts for their opinions and tips on holiday shopping, particularly on Black See SALES • Page 3

Black Friday is a shopper’s paradise that ranks annually as the busiest day of the year for retailers and the throngs mull through price-slashed merchandise, but to local law enforcement the swelled numbers means more cars on the streets and a higher potential for fender-benders. The increased volume that will occur during the holiday, especially on the major thoroughfare that runs through town, should trigger a response from the Alex City Police Department that intends to ensure safety and adherence to road rules. However local law enforcement will also be on the lookout for other types of criminal behavior. The Friday shopping bonanza will bring out the element of society that preys on the purchases and possessions of others. ACPD’s Lt. James Easterwood advised shoppers, “If you leave something in your vehicle place it in your trunk not in plain view.” See SHOPPERS • Page 3

Readers urged to practice safe food handling, prep work STAFF REPORT TPI Staff

This week millions of Americans will gather family and friends around the dinner table to give thanks. But for those preparing the meal, it can be a stressful time. Not to mention, for many it is the largest meal they have cooked all year, leaving plenty of room for mistakes that could cause foodborne illness. “Unsafe handling and undercooking of food can lead to serious foodborne illness,” said Al Almanza, deputy undersecretary for Food Safety at the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA). “Turkeys may contain Salmonella and Campylobacter,

DEAR ABBY: With the holiday shopping season already here, may I suggest another way to look at gift giving? We all want to give the perfect gift to family members. Some gifts can cost a lot of money and some not. I would like people to take a step back and consider who they are buying for. I stopped buying gifts for my parents and sister 10 years ago. Because their money is tight, I have been stocking their pantries with food and staples. I am well off enough financially that I have been able to fill their freezers with enough meat to last three months or more. At Thanksgiving, my husband and I load up our car and bring the meat with us. Then my mom, sister, grandma and I go to the grocery store and buy staples for the pantry and what we need to make freezer meals. Abby, this takes so much pressure off them.

dering what to give their relatives at Christmas. And I’m sure that your generosity is deeply appreciated by your family. Thank you for writing. DEAR ABBY Advice

Food is expensive. So instead of buying Dad that new TV or sound system, or your sister that designer handbag, pause and take a hard look at their situation. Sometimes the need for basics outweighs the desire for the latest and greatest gadgets. Even paying a bill or two can help. Or gift cards for groceries. I never expect presents from my family; all I want is for them to have some freedom in their lives from the daily worries. -NEW WAY OF GIFTING DEAR NEW WAY: I’m pleased to share your letter with readers who may be won-

DEAR ABBY: My husband and I have been dining out with another couple about twice a month. We have not been able to entertain them at our home because it is not easily accessible and the man is in a wheelchair. Over the past several months his health has declined. His mind is sharp, but his body is weakening. The last time we met them for dinner, we couldn’t understand what he was saying, so his wife “interpreted.” Also, when he tries to eat, the food falls out of his mouth onto a bib and from there to the floor. Abby, we just don’t know what to do. We really like this couple, but it is nauseating to watch him eat with food fall-

ing out of his mouth. Plus, the other patrons at the restaurants are starting to stare. We look forward to your advice. -- PEOPLE ARE STARTING TO STARE DEAR PEOPLE: If this couple ever needed understanding friends, it’s now. Because you are embarrassed to be seen with them in a restaurant, consider bringing a take-out meal to their home. Granted, watching your friend struggle is painful. But if he’s going downhill as rapidly as you say, he needs your support more than ever, and so does his wife. And when he’s gone, you’ll know you did the right thing. 60th Wedding Anniversary

George and Martha Morris celebrate milestone anniversary

M

r. and Mrs. George “Buck” Morris celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary Oct. 15 at Jacksons Gap Baptist Church. The diamond anniversary was hosted by their children Rose Rico, Pam Patterson, Cathy Pitts, Hal Morris, Hamp Morris and Jessica Smith. Buck Morris grew up in Randolph County, attended Handley High School and played football in 1949-1950. He joined the Navy and fought in Korea. He attended Troy State and played football for the Red Wave. Martha Ann Moore grew up in Crenshaw County and attended Dozier High School. She was a cheerleader and played piano in her church, Dozier Baptist. Buck Morris and Martha Moore met at Troy. Martha was a music major. They married at Dozier Baptist Church March 10, 1956. Because of health issues in March the celebration was pushed back to Oct. 15, 2016. Preparations were made for a grand entrance by several great grand children and some neighbor kids who drew chalk diamonds on the side walk leading to the fellowship hall. On Oct. 15 they started their sentimental journey back to 1956. They arrived in their golf cart decorated with balloons and a sign “Sentimental Journey 1956-2016.” They made a grand entrance down the path of diamonds. Once inside they were greeted by family and friends and shared cake, punch, fruit and finger foods like chicken salad, pimento cheese, ham and cheese spirals and cheese balls. A slide show was presented and memorabilia was on display around the room. Their cakes consisted of a two tier “bling” cake with a diamond topped sparking 60. Buck had a car cake fashioned to

resemble his 1955 4 door customline, snowshoe white Ford car he had while in school at Troy. For an hour and a half they took a sentimental journey back to 1956. On display were 16 x 20 black and white wedding photos, Martha’s sequined hat she wore on their wedding day and Buck’s cuff links and collar pins he wore. Other time capsule items included original napkins from the shower, guest book from the shower and the brides wedding book. The unused pages in the shower guest book were used for the anniversary guests to sign. Excerpts from the two local newspapers, the Luverne Journal and the Andalusia Star from Match 10, 1956 were shared. They were able to reminisce the price of groceries and see the list of movies playing at the drive in and at the local movie theater and recall many aspect of “small town living” in south Alabama. They now resume their “small town living” in Jackson’s Gap on Main Street and do a

lot of back porch and front porch sitting while entertaining their large family that spills out to all sides of the wrap around porch. They are both retired Buck from Life of Georgia and his Jacksons Gap Feed Store

and Martha from the Bank of Dadeville but both are still active in their church. Buck is a deacon and Martha still plays the piano at church and teaches Sunday School and has since moved to Jacksons Gap in 1970.

Sales Friday and Cyber Monday dos and don’ts. So what is the best way to tell the difference between a legitimate Black Friday deal and a marketing gimmick? “Unfortunately, most customers can’t, and there are so many phony sales, false reference prices, etc.,” said Michael Joseph Tesler, a lecturer of marketing at Bentley University in Waltham, Massachusetts. “There are also legit sales and loss leaders, but to succeed, a consumer must comparison shop, internet check all prices and must know the brands involved.” Other experts say a oneproduct lure to a particular retailer can lead to paying higher prices for your entire purchase. “Retailers use several techniques to draw customers to their stores on Black Friday,” said Saravanan Kesavan, an associate professor of operations in the KenanFlagler Business School at the University of North Carolina. “One of them is to advertise some products at give-away prices for the first few customers. This drives customers to queue up outside the stores and get the bargain. Unfortunately, not everybody gets those products at the lowest price. Even if they do, they may end up paying higher prices for the other products they purchase in the store. So while they get a deep discount on one product, they lost out on the others. “My advice would be to think of the overall basket of goods they wish to price and find the retailer who would offer the lowest price for the entire purchase rather than to be lured by a very low price for just one of the items.” When it comes to preventing overspending, several of the experts boiled the ways to do so down to three – budgets, lists and, surprisingly, the shoppers physical well-being. Make budgets and lists as specific as possible. Also, stay as calm as possible when shopping, as hormones and adrenaline can adversely impact decision-making, and make sure you have eaten well and are wellhydrated as impulse or “hedonic” purchases may increase when shoppers are tired, hungry, etc. Devon Delvecchio, the Raymond E. Gloss professor of marketing in the Farmer School of Business at Miami University, encourages a team approach to Black Friday shopping – as long

as everyone on the team is a team player. “Know what you are looking for, team shop, use technology, divide and conquer,” DelVecchio said. “The hectic nature of Black Friday turns the day into a competitive race rather than a forum for casual bonding with friends and relatives. Embrace the competition. Form your team. Develop the target list. Use a registry app to digitally share the list among the team and to track purchases. Just make sure you get team players so you don’t end up empty-handed as you buy for everyone else on the team.” So if all the rules are followed and the expert advice heeded, which day offers the better shopping opportunities? Black Friday? Cyber Monday? Other days? The experts say it might depend on your likes and lifestyle. “Some recent analysis suggests that Black Friday deals may be better than Cyber Monday deals, but also suggests that Thanksgiving Day may offer even better deals for some categories,” said Priyali Rajagopal, an associate professor of marketing in the Darla Moore School of Business at the University of South Carolina. “So the best deals depend on what one product is being sought. It may also vary depending on the consumer segment, with older consumers willing to go to the stores on Thanksgiving and Black Friday, but younger consumers preferring the convenience of shopping online on Cyber Monday. “Finally, one trend that we are seeing is the expansion of the holiday shopping season beyond these three days to even earlier, the end of October or the beginning of November. So the best deals may not be on any of these three days.” Jane Thomas, a professor of marketing at Winthrop University, says Black Friday and Cyber Monday hold the best deals for some items at larger retailers, but don’t forget your local merchants, either. “The best deals are still on Black Friday and Cyber Monday (for technology and toys),” Thomas said. “Of course, deals are available online and in-store for Black Friday. Many local retailers are participating in Shop Local Saturday and this is a good day to support local retailers.”

Shoppers

continued from page 1

During the shopping rush, Tallapoosa County Sheriff Jimmy Abbett said that consumers should remain aware in the crowded stores and malls throughout the day and especially in the parking lots. “We encourage people to travel in pairs,” Abbett said. “Be in a well it area in the parking lot and just be very familiar with your surroundings … people will try to snatch and grab.” Law enforcement officials ask that if you see anything suspicious - such as individuals or vehicles - or to request assistance, call either the emergency number (911) or for non-emergency calls, dial 256234-3421. Here are some suggestions that officials recommend in order to have a safe and carefree experience during the holiday shopping season: Avoid parking in low lit areas. Be alert and aware of your surroundings in a parking lot. Shop as early as possible to avoid being out at night when thieves can be more active.

Take advantage of the buddy-system and coordinate shopping with a friend. Don’t “flash the cash” - Avoid carrying large amounts of cash by paying with a check or credit card, if possible. To prevent pickpockets, carry a purse under the arm and put a wallet in a inside front jacket or front pants pocket instead of the standard back pocket. Make multiple trips to your car during shopping excursion to avoid being over laden with items, which could attract thieves. Check around and in car for suspicious activity. Pack valuables out of sight in your car. Make sure to keep vehicle doors locked and windows rolled up. Document lost credit cards. Don’t be afraid to use the panic button on your car’s remote. Plan the travel times for routes of family and yourself so law enforcement can be reached if contact has not been made by a certain time.

Food

continued from page 1

by the Food and Drug Administration, 68 percent of the public washes whole turkey before cooking it. USDA does not recommend washing raw meat and poultry before cooking. Washing raw meat and poultry can cause bacteria to spread up to three feet away. Cooking (baking, broiling, boiling, frying or grilling) meat and poultry to the right temperature kills any bacteria that may be present, so washing meat and poultry is not necessary. • Use the refrigerator, the cold-water method or the microwave to defrost a frozen turkey: There are three safe ways to defrost a turkey: in the refrigerator, in cold water and in the microwave oven. Thawing food in the refrigerator is the safest method because the turkey will defrost at a consistent, safe temperature. It will take 24 hours for every 5 pounds of weight for a turkey to thaw in the refrigerator. To thaw in cold water, submerge the bird in its original wrapper in cold tap water, changing the water every 30 minutes. For instructions on microwave defrosting, refer to your microwave’s owner’s manual. Cold water and microwave thawing can also be used if your bird did not entirely defrost in the refrigerator. • Use a meat thermometer: The only way to determine if a turkey (or any meat, poultry or seafood) is cooked is to check its internal temperature with a food thermometer. A whole turkey should be checked in three locations: the innermost part of the thigh, the innermost part of the wing and the thickest part of the breast. Your thermometer should register 165°F in all three of these places. The juices rarely run clear at this temperature, and when they do the bird is often overcooked. Using the food thermometer is the best way to ensure your turkey is cooked, but not overdone. • Don’t store food outside, even if it’s cold: Storing

food outside is not food safe for two reasons. The first is that animals, both wild and domesticated, can get into food stored outside, consuming it or contaminating it. The second is temperature variation. Just like your car gets warm in the summer, a plastic food storage container in the sun can heat up and climb into the danger zone (above 40°F). The best way to keep that extra Thanksgiving food at a safe temperature (below 40°F) is in a cooler with ice. • Leftovers are good in the refrigerator for up to four days: Cut the turkey off the bone and refrigerate it as soon as you can, within 2 hours of the turkey coming out of the oven. Leftovers will last for four days in the refrigerator, so if you know you won’t use them right away, pack them into freezer bags or airtight containers and freeze. For best quality, use your leftover turkey within four months. After that, the leftovers will still be safe, but can dry out or lose flavor. If you have questions about your Thanksgiving dinner, you can call the USDA Meat and Poultry Hotline at 1-888-MPHotline (1-888-674-6854) to talk to a food safety expert. Last November they answered more than 3,000 calls about Thanksgiving dinner. You can also chat live with a food safety expert at AskKaren.gov, available from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. CT, Monday through Friday, in English and Spanish. If you need help on Thanksgiving Day, the Meat and Poultry Hotline is available from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. CT. Consumers with food safety questions can visit FoodSafety.gov to learn more about how to safely select, thaw and prepare a turkey. For more Thanksgiving food safety tips, follow FSIS on Twitter, @USDAFoodSafety, or on Facebook, at Facebook. com/FoodSafety.gov.

on the list to technology upgrades. The repairs will be made to school’s roof, which had been reported to have substantial leaking problems. Board member Randy Anderson had commented in a previous meeting that it should take priority. In the public discussion section of the meeting two women who identified themselves as mothers of children at Dadeville Elementary School raised their concerns about the plan. They voiced strong opinions regarding what they described as conditions in the school. Board members said a majority of their concerns had been addressed recently like their issues concerning the potential presence mold, mildew and pests. They said testing had been conducted recently for mold and mildew and a change in exterminators had been made. The women said they wanted assurance from the board members that DES would take priority. Chief School Financial Officer Phil Blasingame said the funds had been budgeted for use in the project for the current fiscal year 2017. The board members proclaimed any items in the Capital Improvement Plan had to be voted on and

approved before funds were designated. However it was stressed that there was currently no funding for other projects in the plan with county funding from sales tax collections to close in 2018. Also at the meeting, incoming Place Four Board Member Carla Talton was sworn in after winning the only contested seat in the general elections held earlier this month. The board approved the payment of bills, a monthly financial report and depository accounts. A bid from Petroleum Purchasing, Inc. was approved along with a resolution from Regions Banks to pay the principal amount owed from roofing work done to Reeltown Elementary School. County Commissioner T.C. Coley Jr spoke as well about an issue he said would affect school board employees. Coley said a lawsuit filed by the Alabama Education Association against the state and the Public Health Insurance Plan for Employees’ Health Insurance Plan for hiking premiums in what he described as an illegal meeting. He said the hope was to get the premium payments back to the employees.

Thanks to our readers, advertisers and community

H

ere at The Outlook, we have much to be thankful for in this season of Thanksgiving. First and foremost, we are thankful for you, our readers, and we hope that you will continue to trust us to cover your community earnestly, truthfully and accurately. In a time when some people think that Facebook is a great source for news, we are blessed to have a loyal group of people who still believe their day is not complete if they haven’t read The Outlook. We thank all those who have made us their source for local news. Our advertisers mean the world to us all. We thank them for allowing us to help them grow and tell their story. We are also thankful for the tenacity of the people in our hometown. Alexander City has seen its share of tough times. However, this hardworking community appears to have put its broad shoulders to the task of rebounding and overcome deep economic wounds that would have sent other towns belly-up into a future of foundering – if any future at all. The wonderful part of the Alexander City story is that we feel there are even better days to come. For that we are thankful. We are thankful that we live in one of the most beautiful places in the world. Lake Martin provides scenery that creates breath-taking images every day. The lake provides us with an abundant source of water and recreational opportunities that are limitless. Like most of you, we are thankful for our families who share with us the ups and downs of our lives – celebrating with us our wins and consoling us in our losses – and will share with us the bounty we enjoy today. Without family, life loses much of its meaning. With it, the joys of every day are magnified. Finally, we are thankful that we have good, honest work to do. We hope that we have earned your thanks for how we do it.

Thankful for all of God’s amazing gifts

he newsroom is crazy this time of year, not like it isn’t crazy most of the time anyway. But around a holiday, we have to work ahead and the three papers we do on some days of the week becomes five and we often need a map to see where we are and what comes next. But even with the craziness, I still feel like I am the luckiest man on earth. Since it’s the time for giving thanks, I thought I’d share I am thankful for the hand that I have been dealt. I have been blessed in so many ways, despite being a person who has made so many mistakes and bad choices. I am living proof that God smiles on dumb animals. I am so thankful for my family. My mom and dad are no longer here on earth, but the knowledge that they shared with me has served me well. The example they set for me showed me the proper way to treat people with respect. Above all, I am thankful that they taught me how to live, love and laugh and make the most of what I have been given. I can’t thank them enough. I am thankful for having someone special in my like – a person who understands you and puts up with you – is a blessing. I am thankful to have that special someone in my life. I am thankful to have two incredible daughters who are so much like me that it is frightening. In addition to being my babies, they are also my best friends. Through thousands of softball tournaments, NSYNC concerts, countless movies and mini catastrophes – they have never failed to make me

smile when I think of them. I look at them today and realize that they are my greatest accomplishment. I am thankful to have so many incredible friends who have stood beside me when I did things that had some running for cover. I’m not talking about friends of the social media variety – I mean the friends who will be there no matter what. They say you learn who your real friends are when they see you at your worst, and I found that I had some of the best people in the world on my friends list. I am so thankful to have been given the opportunity to make this community my home. Getting the opportunity to live, work and deliver the news here is a dream come true. I have enjoyed meeting the great people who live here, and working to tell their stories and the news that are important to our readers. I can’t thank the people here enough for giving us tips, ideas and feedback. That is what makes what we do here possible. I say it all the time, but I have the best job in the world. Sure, there are days when the hours get long and the workload is heavy, but I wouldn’t have it any other way. I have found a job that isn’t work, just like my high school principal Julian Mock who passed away earlier this year told me to seek out. I am so thankful for being led here in my professional life.

Part of what makes this job so great is that staff here is made up of hardworking, dedicated people with the same mission. We want to make this paper the best it can be. There hasn’t been a single time when they weren’t willing to work the extra hour or go the extra mile to get the best story out to readers. That attitude goes from the top down here at Tallapoosa Publishers. I can’t thank Kenneth Boone enough for allowing me to be a part of the team he has assembled here. I am thankful to have everything I need and almost everything I could ever ask for. I don’t go to bed hungry, and I don’t worry if the lights will be on when I wake up. I have my health, even though some days I feel all the miles I have put on this 55-year-old body. I know I talk about my dad’s sayings and wisdom often in this space, but today one of the best things he ever told me seems fitting. These words came while he laid in a hospital bed in Asheville, North Carolina, the day before he died. “When you get to a place in life where you are happy with where you are, who you are with, what you have and what you do – it is something else,” Dad said. “That’s contentment and the kind of happy that most people never get to feel. If you get that feeling, make sure you just smile, think of me and hit those knees to thank God for letting you have that feeling.” I am thankful. It’s time for me to hit my knees. Mitch Sneed is the editor of the newspapers of Tallapoosa Publishers.

Dear Editor, This weekend was the coldest windiest, blusterous day of the fall. No day for fishing? Wrong! At the marina at Wind Creek State Park, thirty plus bass boats loaded with two high school kids and coach. Boys, girls, black, white, short, tall no matter. These kids had one thing on their mind – catching fish. School, politics, demonstrations and homework were on the back burner. In an orderly manner, one after the other, the boats headed out to their favorite fishing spots, some miles away. The wind was gusting to 20 miles per hour all day long. This was no deterrent for these kids and coaches. Many years ago, I was an avid bass tournament fisherman and this brought back a lot of memories. The smell from the smoke of the engines,

tying on the right lures, what area to fish first. I think this gets in your blood. The comradely, competition and sportsmanship. I wondered how many kids were feeling this just now. Enough about memories. These kids were on the lake eight hours fighting wind and cold weather expecting the nest cast to be a lunker. From 2 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. the boats starting to come in to the weigh in. Bags were disperished to the kids and they stared filling them with their catch. Bleachers were filling up with parents, brothers, sisters, and friends. Cameras flashed as kids displayed their catches. I don’t know exactly how many schools competed, but Benjamin Russell, Dadeville and Wetumpka were there. I didn’t keep up with winners because in my mind they were all winners. Now to the unsung heroes, the coaches.

They furnished their time, boats, fuel, liability insurance and expertise to ensure these kids were safe and had a good time on the lake. To the coaches – a big ATTA Boy. I know you could have been deer hunting, or sitting in a warm and cozy recliner watching football, but you choose to spend your time teaching and instructing these kids. Now you boys, take heed, the girls were highly competitive. And you kids keep a tight line, get hooked on fishing not on drugs. If you are a tournament fisherman with a nice boat, become a coach and inspire these kids. Now for Alexander City, tournaments fill up motels and restaurants, sale gas, groceries and tackle. Promote them and watch the economy grow. James W. Keel Alexander City

The Sobering Truth: Don’t Drink & Drive Millions of people die each year due to alcohol- related automobile accidents. Many people simply do not realize how much alcohol affects one’s ability to operate a motor vehicle. Others mistakenly feel they won’t be among the many people who cause injuries to themselves or other motorists when operating a vehicle in an impaired state. Thanksgiving is the next major holiday on the horizon, and statistics have overwhelmingly shown that this is the most widely-travelled holiday of the year. This trend also falls on the heels of what is known as “Black Wednesday,” or the busiest night of the year for bars. There are a number of reasons for this including visiting family, social gatherings, stress relief, and the fact that very few people are required to work the following day. If your plans this holiday weekend involve alcohol, the best way to avoid a DUI arrest or causing injury to yourself or others is to travel with a designated driver, store the phone number for the local taxi service in your phone, celebrate at home or stay with a friend.

Chief David Barbour of the Dadeville Police Department stresses, “As the time nears to gather with family and friends, please act responsibly and don’t drive if you’ve consumed alcohol. By working together, we can keep people safe on the roads this season.” Whatever your reason for travel, it’s important to remember to keep your eyes open and remain alert while driving for the next several weeks, as the time between Thanksgiving and New Year’s Day is one of the most deadly and likewise one of the most heavily-patrolled times of the entire calendar. Expect sobriety checks throughout your community as this has led to a reduction in alcohol-related accidents by approximately 9%. According to Chief Willie Robinson, ACPD, “Drinking alcohol interferes with coordination and judgement and the affects can last for hours, sometimes into the next morning.” Chief Robinson urges drivers to be safe on the roads this week as the consequences can last a lifetime.

Misinformed Auburn fan had 2 hours of 1985 Iron Bowl bliss

H

e looked to be in his mid20s, wore blue jeans, a white Auburn hat and navy Auburn jacket. Considering his orange and blue attire, you’d think he’d look devastated. Why? It was the night of the 1985 Iron Bowl and Van Tiffin just booted a 52-yard field goal to sink the Tigers. Instead, he was giddy with friends, standing in line outside of a Port Orange, Florida, movie theater. Waiting to get tickets for the fourth installment of “Yo, Adrian!” — otherwise known as “Rocky IV” — a few friends and I chatted it up about the down-to-the-wire football game we’d just witnessed on ABC. Being central Florida kids, the winner wasn’t important to us. We just liked good football, particularly when Keith Jackson did the play-by-play. Then the Auburn fan overheard us and asked the unimaginable. “Hey – who won?” At that moment I froze with disbelief. Despite my Florida address, I had family roots in the Heart of Dixie and I fully understood the passion involved with this rivalry. How could a fan of either Auburn or Alabama reveal to the world that they did not know the final score of the biggest football game on planet earth or did not watch it, period? Let me grab that Auburn logo (an “A” with an eagle) and rip it off of your jacket, son, because you just lost your Auburn card. Perhaps his fandom was about as pencil thin as his ridiculous mustache. I could never imagine sitting next to this clown at Jordan-Hare Stadium. But here I was, standing next to him outside a movie theater some 550 miles from Legion Field. Did he deserve an answer? Absolutely! Did he deserve the truth? Oh heck no! You could watch the Iron Bowl on television or simply find out what happened later and trust a complete stranger to give you the lowdown. Yea, buddy. Excuse me while I paraphrase … “Man, you missed a great one! Probably the best Iron Bowl I’d ever seen (which was true at the time). The teams traded the lead four times in the fourth quarter. Alabama took the lead with about a minute to play, but Auburn drove the length of the field in the closing seconds and kicked a really long field goal on the last play to win.” Or something like that. He was elated with the fake news of Auburn’s dramatic win. You’d think Rocky had already put the big Russian to the mat with Jim Fyffe making the call. “Rocky wins! Rocky wins! Rocky wins! Knockout … Rocky!” Having your team win the Iron Bowl is a big deal, and sometimes it’s way too much of a deal for certain people who turn their fanaticism into a goofy religion that requires team memorabilia be worn for all occasions. This young fan spent the next two hours inside a theater possibly in the best mood he had been in since Bo ran the right way and Auburn won the Iron Bowl in 1983. It wasn’t like he could pull up game information on Twitter. He could munch of his popcorn in delight knowing that he had bragging rights, or at least would not be the subject of crimson torment. I would have loved to see the look on his face when he learned the truth. I also hope that he is not reading this column. During a practice earlier this fall, Central Coosa head varsity football coach Barry Simmons works with his Cougars. Simmons said he is thankful for his wife and daughter this Thanksgiving holiday.

Area sports leaders count Thanksgiving blessings Sports editor’s note: In honor of Thanksgiving, we asked those involved in area sports to share what they are most thankful for this year. Below are their responses. STAFF REPORT TPI Staff

Kendall Graveman, Oakland A’s starting pitcher: I’m most thankful first off for Jesus Christ being sent to die and be risen three days later to pay the ultimate sacrifice for my sins in order to live in eternity with him. Secondly, I’m thankful for the people who have invested in my life to help me on and off the field — my mom and dad (Sharon and Gary Graveman) for raising me in a living household, my brother and biggest Graveman fan (Kyle Graveman) for the support and love he shows me in my career no matter good or bad, my wife (Victoria Graveman) because she keeps me humble and she is the most giving and caring person to others. My high school coach (coach Brooks) and college coach (coach Butch Thompson) for caring for me first as a person but also the support they continue to show me throughout each season. And lastly, I’m just thankful for the ability that I have been blessed with to continue to play the sport that I love. But without those people I mentioned earlier, I would not be in the position I am in today. Jeff Hines, Benjamin Russell head varsity boys basketball coach: I am thankful for many things. I am thankful for my God who blesses us daily. I am thankful for my wife and two daughters that are Hines my biggest fans and I am thankful to have the opportunity to work with a great administration, faculty and staff and a caring student body. Last but not least, I am thankful for the young men on the BR basketball team that I get to work with and grow with daily. Barry Simmons, Central Coosa head varsity football coach: I am thankful that we live in

a country where we have the ability to believe in God worship him freely. I am thankful for my wife (Michelle) and daughter Haley for supporting me in what I do. I am thankful for the job I have and the ability to develop relationship with young men and women and hopefully help them grow as a person. Danny Horn, Benjamin Russell head varsity football coach: I am thankful for Jesus for dying for Horn my sins. For my family, my health, living in the USA, my friends, my job, the opportunity I have to make boys into men. Bernie Robidart, Horseshoe Bend head softball coach: I am thankful for my family, church and country. For having a group of wonderful young ladies that allow me to try to help them become betRobidart ter softball players. And, maybe, help them learn about being better young adults. Dave Jennings, Central Alabama Community College head golf coach: I am thankful for the good bounces my golf ball makes after an errant shot. I am thankful for the confused bass that strikes my lure. I am thankful that daylight saving time lasts longer than regular time. I am thankful for electric windows in vehicles when Jennings a storm brews up while I’m driving. I am forever thankful for the people who use poo-poo scoopers and doodie bags for their dogs. I am thankful for satellite radio on back-road trips. I am thankful to live in these times where deodorant is used by most people. On the serious side, I am truly blessed beyond thanks to have been raised a proud American. I am thankful to live in beautiful Alexander City, Alabama where friendship is a word that has true meaning.
