Radney hosts first-ever group spelling bee

Groups of students in both the fifth and sixth grades competed in the first ever Spelling and Writing Team Competition at Radney Elementary School Tuesday afternoon. Chosen by their language teachers to represent the entire class, three groups of fifth-graders and three groups of sixth-graders worked hard to be named the champions of their respective grades. “This is the first time we’ve held a spelling competition like this at Radney,” teacher and event sponsor Kenyatta Simmons said. “Unlike a traditional spelling bee, the students have to work in teams to win.” Before the teams took their spots behind a table marked with their teacher’s name, Simmons went over the rules of the competition. Each team was given a specific word and had 30 seconds to neatly write the word down on the whiteboard provided and present the word to a panel of judges. Graham sworn in; county schools’ sales tax puts finances in good shape By CLIFF WILLIAMS Staff Writer
At its annual meeting, the Tallapoosa County Board of Education saw newly appointed member Betty Carol Graham get sworn in, got a demonstration of the new bus tracking system and heard the system’s finances were in good order thanks to the sales tax. “It’s a special meeting,” Superintendent Joe Windle said. “We get to induct a new board member.” The board recently agreed to purchase a subscription service to N-Side to track the system’s buses.
“We think it is a step forward,” Windle said. “If we have an incident on a bus, we know where that bus is. This is safety to the next step.” Alan Bentley with N-Side was on hand to demonstrate the system. He explained the system can track in real time the school buses locations, speeds and fuel consumption. The system makes easier determining which routes students should on because of the way their system brings in Google Maps. Windle is proud the system also protects drivers.

That the conversation at dinner revolved around the office is not surprising. The office and the job were the basis of their relationship. first responders to train on property they may have to respond to and to see how personnel with the property can better assist in a response. “Anytime that we exercise with law enforcement we learn things,” said Maxwell Gunter Installation Program Officer Craig Rainey. “We need to do this to provide better support for them to support us.” It was the first such exercise with law enforcement from the Tallapoosa County Sheriff’s Department and the Dadeville Police Department in the first joint exercise with officials from Maxwell Gunter to train for an active shooter. “We have a new requirement to exercise at our off site locations,” Rainey said. “They would be the folks we would call.” Given the distance to the main post, the sheriff’s department would be the first response to a situation at the recreation area. Tuesday morning four deputies and one officer from the Dadeville Police Department could be seen clearing buildings while following an active shooter, finally cornering him the bathhouse on the property. Officers were able to negotiate the shooter into surrendering. Tallapoosa County Sheriff’s Deputy Sgt. Ray Arrington explained the exercise where a disgruntled person showed up on the property. “When the shooter started making pop shots someone from in the building made the call,” Arrington said. “Dispatch treated it as an active shooter.” All this was done under the eyes of training officers who were taking notes
like Arrington who saw some things to improve on. “Overall they did OK,” Arrington said. “There are some things we need to point out to them.” Some of those tips are move to the shooter quicker to tips on the initial arrival on scene to the tactical movements. Like the real thing, responding law enforcement knew very little when Tuesday morning. “When the deputy gets on scene he gives back information,” Arrington said. “When he first gets on the scene, he has to evaluate the scene. He is listening for shots. We are trained to go to the threat to stop that threat. An officer wants to get on scene and take the threat out. The way I see it, every shot that is fired is someone who died.” Arrington said there are differences between training exercises and the real thing, but training is still the way to go. “In a real situation, your adrenaline gets going and you get tunnel vision,” Arrington said. “You revert back to training. You got to train to be effective at it (response). So you train, train, train.” Rainey was pleased with what he saw Tuesday morning in the joint exercise. “We validated some things,” he said. “We learned some things. Yeah, we had fun.” For Arrington, the exercise serves as a reminder of the danger first responders face everyday. “It is always in the back of your mind,” Arrington said. “You don’t know what your day holds. You leave your home and take every call serious as it comes.”

t is the season to be thankful. While celebrating the season, let’s also remember the ones who touch us all in some way. As we prepared our annual How to Cook A Turkey and I Am Thankful Section which appears inside our paper today, we noticed that while spelling was an issue at times, the words of many of these young students were inspiring. It was obvious that we are blessed with some incredible teachers here who serve as mentors our children. Teachers touch lives every day in their classrooms, and as you are giving thanks for God’s blessings today, we ask that you salute them. The Outlook believes teachers deserve much more than just thanks. It is amazing what they do with our children. Just look at today’s work from students at area schools explaining what they are thankful for and how to cook a turkey that is featured in today’s paper. Look at what Jordan Burton wrote for directions on how to cook a turkey in the second grade class of Ashley Thornton at Jim Pearson Elementary School. “First, I watch a video. Then, I do the dreion. Next, I will do it. Last it will be ready,” Burton said was his way to cook a turkey. Mrs. Thornton is teaching her students how to research something they do not know and learn how to do it. And second-graders Ayunni King in Sherelle Holloway’s class at Jim Pearson and Reese in Ethel Adair’s class at Horseshoe Bend School give us reason to believe there is hope for the world. “I am thankful for family. I am thankful for God and Jusus. I am thankful for my teacher. I am thankful for my self,” King wrote. counties before apparently making his way to Georgia. Monday evening at about 5:30 p.m., Vernon, kidnapped William Richard McCord, 67, from his house on Bradley Road near Wetumpka. Also taken was the victim’s vehicle, a black Grand Prix GT-2. Officials search the area all night looking for signs of the vehicle, the victim and Vernon. At about 6:55 a.m. Tuesday, Vernon dropped McCord off unharmed in Douglasville, Georgia. McCord made it to a police station to get help. McCord was not physically harmed, officials said. The victim’s Grand Prix was found abandoned near a Fairburn Road convenience store and there is no sign of Vernon. “They have not been able to locate Vernon there in Douglasville at this time,” Coosa County Sheriff Terry Wilson said. “But if there is a silver lining, he did release the kidnap victim and he appears to be OK. “Right now we are just working to see if we can find any ties that he may have to that area and working with authorities there to possibly track him down.” Alex Camacho of the U.S.
Marshal’s Service Southeast Regional Fugitive Task Force said right now agents are verifying that the individual responsible for transporting McCord was indeed Vernon, and then seeing what evidence and connections that he may have to the area. “We really don’t know a lot at this point,” Camacho said. “The man did make his way to the Douglasville Police Department and physically it’s my understanding that he is OK. We have people talking to him to see what information we can ascertain that could enable us help out sister agency in Alabama locate this man.” Here is a timeline of the path of terror that Vernon has been on since Sunday afternoon: Sunday: 2:30 p.m.: Shane Anthony Vernon is able to escape from the Coosa County jail for the second time in three weeks, through a door that had not been secured. 4:30 p.m.: Vernon invaded a home on Highway 231, terrorizing and tying up residents. He is known to have stolen clothes, guns and a 2016 Ford Fusion from that residence. 8:30 p.m.: Ford Fusion found

Multiple agencies including Coosa County Sheriff’s Office, Elmore County Sheriff’s Office, Alabama
Law Enforcement Agency, the State K-9 Tracking Team, the ALEA Aviation Unit and the United States Marshal’s Office were involved in the search. Now the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office, The Douglasville Police Department, the Georgia State Patrol and the Georgia Bureau of Investigation are involved in the search. According to Wilson, the United States Marshal Service is coordinating what he called a nationwide search. Felony warrants for unlawful imprisonment, kidnapping, armed robbery, theft of a motor vehicle and escape have been issued for Vernon. An internal investigation is being conducted regarding the actions of the correctional officer, Wilson said in a released statement. “He has scared a lot of people to death all around our area,” Wilson said. “He hasn’t physically harmed anyone yet, but we fear that as he becomes more desperate that his behavior will escalate. We know he has ties to our area and to Alexander City, so we are doing everything possible to find him before someone gets hurt.”
Council in the budget proposal for it this fiscal year. Following the presentation, in which the Colonial Life representatives said they could offer health insurance through Blue Cross Blue Shield of Alabama as well as life insurance through Colonial Life, the council approved letting the agents come back next week and talk with town employees. While the town was unable to provide insurance for its employees this fiscal year, this meeting would allow town employees to purchase their own insurance for the time. The council spent a few minutes reviewing expenditures from the month of October, the first month under the new town budget. Expenses in both the general fund and the water fund had exceeded revenues in October, but this could be fairly easily explained, according to Blasingame. “We went ahead and paid out the $5,000 we budgeted that went to the school and $1,000 for the advocacy center,” he said, adding that, if these two expenses were not counted, the town expenses for October only exceeded revenue by $1,500. For the water budget, expenses exceeded revenue by approximately $15,000, though Blasingame said this was due to the payment the town made to the engineers working to improve the New Site water sys-

The council also took a moment to recognize visitors from the local Boy Scout troop who were working on their “Citizenship in the Community” merit badge. As a requirement to earn the badge, the scouts had to attend a city council meeting. The following items were also brought before the New Site Town Council: • Minutes from the Nov. 6 meeting were approved. • The council received clarification on the recently received letter from Tallapoosa County Engineer David Moore. A citizen of New Site had contacted the county engineer to request work on Connector Road, Perry Circle and Whiteard Road. Blasingame said he spoke with Moore, who informed the mayor that it was normal policy for the county to contact a municipality before starting work on roads within the city limits. The council approved a motion for Town Clerk Shelia Fuller to draft a letter allowing the county to perform this work. • Blasingame said that the report from McKee and Associates regarding bringing the New Site Gym up to code would be coming in soon. “They
will be formulating a plan of recommendations, as well as identifying which code they feel the gym should be classified under,” Blasingame said after the meeting. • The purchase order for the playground unit had been sent in, and the unit was tentatively scheduled to arrive in early January. • The council approved purchasing a podium for $129.88 for the senior activity center. • Senior Center Director Jan Kennedy presented the December calendar for the
senior center, including the open house on Sunday, Dec. 3 from 2 to 4 p.m. and the first luncheon set for Wednesday, Dec. 20, with lunch sponsored by River Bank & Trust and New Site Police Officer Justin Farr providing musical entertainment. • Police Chief Philip Weddle reported the month has been somewhat busy with a few arrests, but that everything was going well overall. • Blasingame asked if money paid by residents as a deposit to receive city
water, paid into a separate account, was restricted to that account or if it could be moved into the general water fund. It was decided Fuller would investigate the rules regarding this fund and report back at the next council meeting. • Looking at the January and February calendars, the council decided to move the meeting scheduled for Jan. 1 to Jan. 8, the Jan. 15 meeting to Jan. 22 and the meeting on Feb. 19 would be moved to Feb. 20. • The council was
reminded Town Hall would be closed Thursday and Friday for the Thanksgiving holiday. • Work to replace the pipeline leading from Hillabee Creek to the nearby pumping station would begin in January. • Roger Coker with the Water Department reported work on the Lashley Road line began Monday. The next meeting of the New Site Town Council will be Monday, Dec. 4 beginning at 5 p.m. in the meeting room of the New Site Town Hall.

After five rounds, the team with the most points would be named the winner. However, if two teams were tied, the competition would go to sudden death, where both teams were given a word. The first team to correctly spell the word on the whiteboard and hold it up would be awarded the victory. During the fifthgrade bee, the team of Sara Grace Jackson, Cortlynn Fisher, Ryder Mobley and Olivia Booker, representing Kandi Patterson’s class, were named the winners, while SaBreia Thomas, Anna Corley, Reagan West and Andi Fox brought home a win for sixth-grade language teacher Autumn

Each student on the winning team was awarded a medal for their achievement, while Patterson and Rager were also given trophies to display in the classroom. Adding to the excitement of the day, three teachers from each grade also competed against each other in a spelling bee of their own. Joining her students as champions, Patterson was the winner of the fifth-grade competition, while Katelyn Gullion defeated Rager in the sixthgrade teacher bee. “For the first time of this event, I think it went well overall,” Simmons said. In addition to Tuesday’s spelling bee, Simmons said she has a math competition, following a format
similar to the one held this past school year, scheduled for Dec. 12, giving students the chance to flex their numerical prowess in a competitive environment. “I also want to try and have a vocabulary competition in the spring, but right now, it’s still in the planning stages,” she added. Though many of Simmons’ ideas may still be in the planning phases, including possibly growing this and having similar competitions against other area schools, having things like the math competition and team spelling bee are a great way for students to practice their classroom skills in a competitive, yet fun environment. “I’m excited we were able to offer this,” Simmons said. “It’s a great way to end the day today.”

“Our drivers get hit with false accusations like speeding,” Windle said. “It gives us real time information to answer questions.” Bentley said the information is also recorded and the system has the ability to send alerts when buses travel outside a set range or detect a rapid acceleration or deceleration. The board approved the monthly financial report and the fiscal year 2017 financial statement and learned things are looking up for the system. “We had a great sales tax year,” Windle said. “Best year ever. Reserve, we have met the requirement for the first time in 10 to 12 years. We now have one and a half months in reserve.”
Tallapoosa County Schools Chief Financial Officer Tommy Thweatt said part of the system’s success was due to state funding in school transportation but the system would likely see that scaled back to some degree forcing the system to use local money to fully fund the program. Windle was proud of the projects they had completed, such as the roof at Dadeville Elementary School, the visitor bleachers at the Dadeville football field, the lights at the Reeltown football field, the softball pressbox and concession stand at Reeltown High School, the roof on the band room at Horseshoe Bend High School and the air conditioning at
the Horseshoe Bend School Cafeteria kitchen. “We incurred no debt on those projects,” Windle said. The projects were paid for from the newest 1-cent sales tax passed by the Tallapoosa County Commission. Windle was silent about the upcoming Dec. 12 3-mil ad valorem tax vote though the school board attorney briefly stated the vote might need to be talked about if the governor decides to postpone the election due to the controversy in the U.S. Senate race. No one from the public signed up to speak to the board in its annual meeting but the board did reelect Martin Johnson as chair and Michael Carter as vice chair.

Treadwell also informed the board the lawsuit filed in federal court by former Councill Middle School Principal Melanie McKinney would be dismissed. The board also: • approved the resignation of Dadeville Elementary School teacher Teresa Brunetti. • approved the employment of Travis Spraggins at Horseshoe Bend School and Jennifer Sprayberry at Dadeville Elementary School. • appoved a purchased services agreement with Darlene Jones to work as a parapro in special education at Reeltown Elementary. • approved revisions to the Child Nutrition Program’s policies and wellness program.

Finally, the Iron Bowl means something again
I
want to start off by wishing everyone a very Happy Thanksgiving. I truly hope you get a chance to spend some quality time with your family and enjoy all the wonderful traditions that are associated with this particular holiday. We all have so much to be thankful for and no one more so than myself. I would need an entire page of today’s paper to adequately portray my appreciation for all the many wonderful blessings in my life. While being thankful is definitely important, I’m going to try and take it a step farther this year by telling the people who mean the most to me how much I appreciate them face-toface. I encourage you to do the same. It won’t cost you hardly anything to say it, but could be priceless to those that hear it. Where has the college football season gone? It couldn’t have been more than a couple of weeks ago when we were talking about the season opener. Well, it’s been an interesting journey and the regular season has come down to one game. The No. 1 Crimson Tide (11-0) will square off with the No. 6 Auburn Tigers (9-2) this Saturday in JordanHare Stadium. The winner goes to Atlanta to face Georgia in the SEC Championship Game. The loser goes home and is forced to let others decide its fate. The 82nd edition of the Iron Bowl should be an incredible matchup with championship implications for both teams. What else could you possibly ask for in a rivalry game? I know there’s a lot of animosity between these fan bases and many would tell you they desire nothing more than to see their rival go 0-12. However, the passion and intensity of this game is far more befitting a top10 matchup. Alabama has certainly done its part over the past decade, being ranked No. 1 or No. 2 in eight of the last 10 meetings. Auburn, on the other hand, has come into the game ranked in the top 10 only twice since 2008 (2010 & 2013). I think it just brings out the best in both teams when there’s more on the line than just pride. I’d like to add one more thing I’m truly thankful for this year. I’m immensely thankful I can actually write this column honestly feeling Auburn has a decent chance to win the game. Again, the Tide has been one of the best teams in the country for nearly a decade, but it’s had as much to do with the Tigers being lousy. Dadeville receives grant to resurface track By LIZI ARBOGAST Sports Editor
For years, Dadeville High School has been dreaming of a new track, both for its community and for its track and field team. Now, that dream is becoming a reality, as Tallapoosa County has received a grant to resurface the quartermile long diverse-use track. “It’s really awesome; it’s beyond words,” said Chris Hand, DHS principal and track and field coach. “It’s something that has been dreamed about since I started back in 2000 when we started the track team. It’s almost hard to put into words.” Despite the lack of a nicer facility, the Tigers’ track program has managed
to find quite a bit of success even at the state level. Because of that, it became the brain child of Commissioner Emma Jean Thweatt to give Dadeville a new facility. “The school has been wanting it for years, and the previous track coach was real instrumental in helping us get it off the ground,” Thweatt said. “(The community) has been very supportive.” According to Tallapoosa County Administrator Blake Beck, the idea of proposing a grant to have the track resurfaced goes back several years. But more recently, the county commissioner hired Terry Acuff to help write grants for these types of projects, which really set things in motion. The county commissioners met with the Tallapoosa
Board of Education, and Acuff began the grant-writing process. “Dadeville has a track program that’s been pretty successful given the lack of facilities, so when we met with the board, we all wanted to write this grant,” Beck said. From there, the grant proposal went to the Alabama Department of Economic & Community Affairs and was eventually approved by Gov. Kay Ivey. “Gov. Ivey and I both applaud those elected officials, individuals and organizations who work so hard to improve recreation opportunities in their communities,” ADECA Director Kenneth Boswell said in a release. “I am See TRACK • Page B2

For years, Benjamin Russell has been known as a wrestling powerhouse across the state of Alabama. Although the Wildcats finished 22nd in the state a season ago, that wasn’t really up to their usual standard. This year, under first-year head coach Michael Ransaw, the Wildcats are planning to turn that back around. “The kids have really responded well, and I think they’re ready for the challenge that we’ve given them,” Ransaw said. “One thing that I told them is to think about how they finished last year at every tournament, and our objective is to place two places higher at every tournament. hard just to get there.” Ransaw is expecting the middle of his lineup to be his strength. Ryan Spradley, who finished fifth at last year’s state championships, returns at 138, and Saxon Coker will start at 145. “Saxon has been around wrestling for the past six or seven years, and he continues to improve,” Ransaw said. “He’s a sophomore that’s going to hopefully give us some big points.” Michael Parker will likely be the Wildcats’ 152-pound. Although Parker didn’t fare too well at the state tournament, he had the best winning percentage of last year’s Benjamin Russell squad. “We’re looking for great things out of him,” Ransaw said. The Wildcats have four seniors on the roster, and three of them, including Parker, will likely start. Curtis Norris and Cam Bucker, both of whom are fresh off the football field, are battling it out for the top heavyweight spot. Ransaw said he’ll work to get both of them mat time. In the lower weight classes, Bobby Charsha will be one to watch. “He has been wrestling all summer,” Ransaw said. “He goes to big tournaments, and we’re looking for big things from him at 106. He’s kept his weight down perfectly, and he’s wrestled at 106 all year long.” As for the 113-, 120- and 126-pounds, Benjamin Russell has some guys who haven’t done much wrestling in the past, so Ransaw will be “throwing them to the wolves.” It all begins today, as the Wildcats head to Hoover for a varsity duals tournament beginning at 9 a.m. They are guaranteed five matches, and will face the likes of Auburn, Gardendale, Hueytown, Vestavia Hills, Southside Gadsden, Hoover and Pelham throughout the day. “Those are some pretty big schools that we’ll be going against, so it’s a great opener for us,” Ransaw said. Although wrestling is a team sport, the Wildcats are also going to focus on some individual goals in the hopes of putting more than one on the podium at this year’s state championships. “I have sat down with each them and talked to them about individual goals,” Ransaw said. “I had them tell me where each one of them wanted to be at every point in the season, and I said, ‘OK, now let’s work on it.’ Every last one of them said, ‘Last year, we weren’t in shape,’ and you can already see a difference in their endurance. I think we’re going to be quicker, we’ve done a lot of footwork, and we’re going to be in shape.”

2012, 2014, 2015 and 2016. ‘08 and ‘12 were just disastrous seasons all the way around and the most uncompetitive Iron Bowls of my lifetime. The Tigers overachieved in the ‘09 game and came incredibly close to wrecking Alabama’s perfect season. It was a shootout in 2014 and it would’ve taken a miracle to overcome injuries and total dysfunction at the quarterback position in ‘11, ‘15 and ‘16. Seven times in the last nine games I didn’t feel like Auburn had much of a chance. It lost all seven games. Of course, there were those two times when the Tigers did field a team worthy of the competition in 2010 and 2013. I thought Auburn had a great chance to win those games and it did in dramatic fashion. Hmm… Quarterback Jarrett Stidham is healthy and quite functional. The Tigers have an elite defense. I truly believe this team is worthy of the competition. No prediction. I’m just saying… Andy Graham is a regular columnist for The Outlook.

Mark Tuggle sponsored the grant and was integral part of ushering the proposal in Montgomery. “The County Commission has helped on the local side with dollars, and Senator (Tom) Whatley and I have supported the grant approval at the State level,” Tuggle said. “I am looking forward to seeing progress for the community at the Dadeville High School track.” The total project cost of resurfacing Dadeville’s track is $251,266.09 with the federal grant totaling $200,000. The remainder of cost, or the local share, will be the responsibility of the county commission, according to Beck. “I would expect that all or most of our share would be in-kind work,” Beck said. “The commission workforce will do preparation on the track that equal to the local share amount. Basically, they’ll be doing some grading and moving dirt, bringing dirt in to prepare the area; that’s what the in-kind work would be.” Currently, the Dadeville track is made of crusher run, which is a mix finer than gravel. Having a new track will also allow the Tiger team to have long jump and triple jump pit unlike the current makeshift sand pits, according to Hand. If the new track has eight lanes, it will also allow Dadeville to host home meets. For the Tigers, Thweatt is hoping

Dadeville track program has been very, very successful with very limited resources, and this gives that group of kids and people dedicated to give it more facilities the ability to continue to compete. It’ll also act as a community walking trail, which was one of the conditions of the grant. “Commissioner Thweatt was very adamant in pursuing this for the folks in Dadeville. She deserves the lion’s share of the credit for getting this done.” According to Thweatt, the in-kind work will begin as soon as the grant money is officially received, and she’s hoping to have most of the work done prior to the winter weather. If not, the project will be completed this spring.
this will jumpstart an already successful track and field program. “I think it’ll make them even better than what they are now,” Thweatt said. “They’ve been good for several years, eight to 10 years even, but never had the facility to work with. T
he Alexander City Parks & Recreation 50+ Quilt Guild group held a special gathering on Monday, Nov. 13. The group presented Save A Life Director Sharon Moore 62 baby quilts! The group has worked hard all year long pouring love and care into these particular baby quilts. That young mother’s to be who receive the quilts with hopefully know that there is a group who cares. The quilters enjoyed a meal together while Sharon shared more about all the good things that Save A Life has to offer. The Quilt Guild is already making plans on starting their next bundles of baby quilts for the 2018 year. Our Monthly Luncheon was a Thanksgiving Feast indeed! The 50+ Hilltop Players presented three fun and entertaining skits. City Councilman, Scott Hardy wished everyone a Happy Thanksgiving and joined in on the fellowship. Parks and Recreation Director, Sonny Wilson thanked all that were in attendance for volunteering their time for needed help during the course of the year and prayed for our special gathering and group meal. We want to thank Johnny Keel for leading us all in the Pledge of Allegiance and to all the others who helped before, during and after the event. A Special thank you goes to the Hilltop Players for practicing several months on the skits in order to bring us all laughter and cheer. Thank you to all who attended and support the ACPR 50+ program. The “Learn to Make Bows” activity was well received last Friday. Although we had several knots involved at times during

hanksgiving is upon us, such an exciting time for friends and family gatherings. I truly hope you have a very Blessed and it carries through into the New Year. Happy Birthday to Tory Phillips reaching 25 on Nov. 24 and becoming a super dog groomer under her mother Jamie’s tutorship. Then the 29th is James Hall Turner’s day of celebration. So if you stop by the ABC store in Alex City and James is working this week, please wish him a happy one. Also sending all good wishes to Mr. Harold Turner as he recuperates at home. The best-matched couple, Pete and Peggie Sue Ott of Nixburg, will reach 59 years of marriage Nov. 29. You will not meet a sweeter, kinder and more caring loving couple, about each other, their family and friends. Wishing them all good things in the coming years. On our way into Alex City for an early doctor’s appointment last Thursday, Ron noticed some smoke in the trees as we passed the former furniture storage trailer belonging to Mrs. Estelle Clark who lives across Coosa 4 from us. Mrs. Clark’s son Danny has lived there for about ten years, and we knew both the Clarks burned their household trash. We thought possibly the smoke was from a re-kindling of the previous days burn. That was so wrong. Upon our return home, almost noontime, we saw the sad truth, the trailer was smoldering, smoke still up in the trees, the roof had melted down at the front. Right close by was Danny’s old sporty car that doesn’t run, an old vintage truck, plus Mrs. Clark’s newer little car that has been there at least a week. I found this strange, as Ms. Terry had told me she didn’t like Danny driving her car as he wasn’t careful enough. This was a house-trailer fire, and not knowing if Danny was still inside, I frantically called trying our E-911 number provided. Turns out the

magnet with number has been changed, but I wasn’t aware. Now you just dial “911” as in the big cities. I did reach the Coosa Sherriff’s Department, to learn that fire officials and sheriffs had attended the scene already as the fire began inside the home the night before. The fire’s cause is still under investigation. Ron finally completed all his medical tests, including the sleep lab, which he said was awful, as he couldn’t rest with so many attached wires overnight with a very uncomfortable mattress. Nothing new really, we already knew Ron had a stroke and still don’t know what caused it. However, he is now on weekly allergy shots for dust mites. He still has the vice-grip, constant headache that he sought medical help for almost nine weeks ago. Mark your calendar for Thursday, Nov. 30, when “Sweet Potato Pie” will perform “A Home Grown Christmas” at the BRHS Auditorium. Doors open around 6:30 p.m., tickets will be available at the door and are $15. Looks like autumn is coming along with cooler night, but gloriously sunny days. The South is a great place to live. The “Tails End” Thrift shop is a great place, located next to the Elmore County Humane Shelter. Thrift shop will close for Thanksgiving, but be open on Saturday, worked by all volunteers, and a friendly place to shop. Until next week, keep smiling. Ingredients: feathers, turkey, cheese and the turkey’ feet Directions: First you have to put the turkey I the dishwasher to wash it. Then put it in my mom’s big pot and put all the chees and turkey feet in. They you cut it up and put it in the stove. Cooking time: 2 hours Oven temperature: hot like ire hot! – John Riley Baker
How I would make my Thanksgiving turkey is that I would get my dad to kill a turkey and I would help my dad get the turkey meat out and cook it in the oven and wait for it to be done and when it would be done I would put some sezen on the turkey and that would be how I make my thanksgiving turkey. – Annie
