y all accounts, E. Paul Jones lived life to its fullest but also served others along the way. The retired Fifth Judicial Circuit District Attorney passed away Sunday night after a battle with cancer. Colleagues and friends remember Jones as a great, jovial friend who served well in his time in the courtrooms of the fifth district in Tallapoosa, Macon, Chambers and Randolph counties. “Paul was one of a kind,” Thomas Radney said. “He was an excellent lawyer and friend.” “I love E. The Alexander City City Council will hold a work session at 4 p.m. today. The council will discuss the fiscal year 2016 audit performed by Carr, Riggs and Ingram, a proposed municipal complex and a proposed rental ordinance. The audit has been in the works as accountants have been helping reconcile the books for more than three years and is one of several steps in bringing accounting issues up to date for the city. The municipal complex discussion is likely to include discussion about a new facility for much of the downtown city services including much of the operations in the current city hall. Previously options were looked at for the police department including the old Russell Corporation headquarters on Lee Street. Bill Nichols celebrates veterans over the weekend By DONALD CAMPBELL Staff Writer

Bill Nichols State Veterans Home residents and their guests filled the cafeteria at the home Sunday afternoon as Bill Nichols held its annual Veterans Day Tribute, remembering those who served in the armed forces throughout America’s history. A car show was also held Saturday where residents and guests got up close and personal with military vehicles and other rides. Master Sgt. Harry S. Scroggins of the United States Air Force was the guest speaker at Sunday’s event, explaining how Alabama has lived up to its motto, “We dare defend our rights,” by never refusing to answer the call when war came. “Only a small percentage of our country’s population has answered the call,” Scroggins said. “Alabama has never failed to answer the call.” Scroggins said Alabama was a state born in war, as a violent conflict was waged against the Red Stick faction of the Creek nation across the territory that would become Alabama less than a decade later.
