Area contractors should look out for new building codes Outlook Staff Writer
By Mitch Sneed
The Dadeville City Council approved a motion to update building codes to the 2012 book pending the Tallapoosa County Commission’s and Alexander City’s adoption of the 2012 codes as well. “This would bring us current to what is being used in the Auburn and Opelika areas,” Dadeville Building Inspector Michael Richardson said. “It would make it easier on the contractors to be on the same standard in area.” Richardson explained to the council that several of the area building inspectors have been meeting to talk about problems and trying to get on the same page to make it easier for everyone involved. Richardson also asked the council about the Board Adjustments which is needed to help rectify problems with building permits. Dadeville currently uses the 2006 building codes.

Bill Nichols vets honored as ‘heroes’ By Mitch Sneed Outlook Editor
Wednesday was set aside as a day to honor those who served our nation, but speakers at a special Veterans Day Ceremony at Alexander City’s Bill Nichols Veterans Home said that is something that should be done every day. The message was driven home by featured speaker retired Air Force Commander Delores “Dee” Hardin. “If you are a veteran, I would ask that you raise your hand,” Hardin asked those in the See HEROES, Page 3

It appears as though Alexander City will be without a new budget for a little bit longer. Citing the fact that city employees were off Wednesday for Veterans Day, Mayor Charles Shaw pushed back the deadline for additional cuts until Friday and postponed a planned budget work session that was set for tonight. “Due to the Veterans Day holiday, we have decided that the reworked department budgets will not be due until Friday afternoon,” Shaw wrote in an email to council members “After these new budgets are reviewed, we plan to have a work session on Tuesday, Nov. 17 at 4:30 p.m.” The council had hoped to have the budget finalized in time for Monday night’s regular meeting. The additional cuts to the capital budget became necessary after a Monday work session where several employees pointed out for years they had See BUDGET, Page 3

Bend is rich in both of those areas. The park is the site of the famed 1814 battle where Major General Andrew Jackson‘s army of 3,300 men attacked Chief Menawa’s 1,000 Red Stick Creek warriors fortified in a horseshoe shaped bend of the Tallapoosa River. The battle remains the largest single loss of Native American lives, and helped form the foundation of Alabama with the transferring of 22 million acres of Creek lands. The park features more than a thousand preserved natural acres and welcomes more than 50,000 visitors each year.
