Construction begins on Lee Street By MITCH SNEED Editor
After weeks of warnings and two years of planning, construction on Lee Street in Alexander City began Thursday with more orange in the area than on the first day of gun season. Construction workers, heavy machinery and flagmen lined the streets with barrels and cones to reroute traffic as the pavement will be taken up all the way to the base to build a fresh, new road from the ground up. Harry Ward is a project manager with Engineering, Environmental & Forestry Services Company and has handled much of the design work on the project. Thursday he and others went through 12 pages of detailed plans on the tailgate of his
truck to make sure every detail is followed along the way. The project is so extensive that crews could be in the area for up to three months, Ward said. “Back when this road was built, there weren’t as many standards and regulations as there are today,” Ward said. “So in some cases only a shallow base was put in, hardly compacted at all and some asphalt was laid and they went to driving on it. This will undo all that and in some places we will go below the asphalt by as much as 18 inches and then build it back up and do it the right way.” Traffic has been shifted into just two lanes and then it will be shifted back once the milling and demolition phases starts. The men of the Gibraltar Lodge having been serving as mentors for children in Alexander City. To help further the cause and reach more children, the lodge is hosting a Stop the Violence Picnic Saturday at the Cooper Community Center. “We know we cannot save the world,” David Wyckoff said. “But if we can save one kid and then he can save another, then we have done our job.” The idea is show children there is life outside of violence. “We are trying to get a hold of kids,” Wyckoff said. “We want to show them there is more to life than pulling triggers and drinking.” On the heels of the death of Benjamin Russell High School student Quentavious Arrion Reese, Wyckoff hopes children will learn from the mistakes of others. “Maybe it will open more eyes,” Wyckoff said. “Maybe it will help See RALLY • Page A3

Students should also know about government assistance programs, such as the Pell Grant, which can give additional money toward tuition for any low-income student. Girl Scouts don’t duck, summon help for feathered friend By DAVID GRANGER Staff Writer
A local Girl Scout troop took action Friday when, on the final school day of their spring break, they came across a feathered friend in need of their help. According to Jana Munro, troop leader of Wetumpka’s Girl Scout Troop 8090, the girls were working toward their Take Action badges, designed to show their power in the community, by picking up trash in Gold Star Park when the scouts noticed that one of the ducks wasn’t acting normally. “As we finished picking up the trash,” Munro said, “we started walking over toward the ducks and, you know, picking up a little bit more stuff and one of the girls said something about one of the ducks. Then all the girls came running over to me and they said, ‘Miss Jana! Miss Jana! Something’s wrong with that duck.’ And I said, ‘What do you mean something’s wrong with it?’ and I did notice that it had isolated itself from all the rest of them.” Munro said to get a better look, she took her camera and zoomed in on the duck. “Once I zoomed my camera in, I told the girls, ‘It’s got a fish hook in its mouth,’ and they were like ‘What are we going to do?’ I asked them what they thought they should do because we’d been talking about the power of speaking out in the community and doing the things that can help the community and I said, ‘This is a prime example of being powerful. What can you do to be powerful in this situation?’” Munro and her scouts decided the best thing to do was to call the non-emergency number at the Wetumpka Police Department. “I wasn’t exactly sure who to call either,” Munro said. The WPD dispatched animal control officer Mitch Williams to the park to help rescue the duck from its

fishing-line-and-hook trap. “He came out and he caught it,” Munro said. “It was kind of funny because when he caught him, we all looked at him and he was in bad trouble. He had line around his neck, around his feet and, of course, the hook in his mouth.” Williams, who has been an animal control office for only five months, said it was his first time to be called to rescue a duck in Gold Star Park. “Somebody was just careless and got their line tangled up or something and left it there with the bait on it,” Williams said. “The duck thought it was for him.” Munro’s first inclination was to take her scouts and leave and that she would just call later and check on the duck, which the scouts eventually named “Trooper.” “The girls were all ‘Can we go? Can we go?’ So I asked him if he minded if we tagged along behind him and he said, ‘No, no, come on.’ So we got to Bryson’s (Veterinary Clinic) and they were kind of busy. One of the girls at the front desk was talking to the animal control guy and they were trying to come up with a plan. The animal control officer ended up taking the duck back outside and said, ‘I guess I’ll take him to the animal shelter and see if someone can help me get the hook out.’ And I said, ‘I’ll help you. Just tell me what I need to do because I’ve never done this before.’ Here
I am, the Girl Scout leader and I have to step up and show my girls this is what you do. “While he was holding the duck, I tried to get the hook out of its tongue, but it was at the back part of his tongue toward its throat and I told him, ‘It’s not coming out. It’s hooked really, really good.’ It was obvious that somebody had hooked the duck and just didn’t want to deal with the duck. So he took the pliers and he cut the hook in half so that we could get it out. Once we got it out, we all trailed each other back to the park and the girls watched him get released.” Munro said Williams told the scout group that many times people put bread on their hooks to catch fish and the ducks see the bread and, thinking its food for them, go after it, end up getting hooked and then, not wanting to deal with them, cut their lines and move on. “My girls said, ‘Well that’s dangerous for these ducks. They’re community ducks.’ So they started getting vocal about talking about it. I told them the only thing we can do is spread the word. I asked if they wanted me to go home that night and contact a couple of the newspapers and we’ll see if we can get the word out there and they were like, ‘Yeah, that would be great.’ “It was a really good learning experience for the girls and it was very exciting to know that we were able to save the duck because it was
hooked so bad that it had stopped eating, it wasn’t getting in the water, it had isolated itself and it was pretty tangled up.” Munro said the ducks release was a joyous event for all involved – the scouts, Trooper, even the geese who coexist in the park with the ducks. “Trooper was so excited. Whenever (Williams) caught it, it didn’t fight him. It was so docile the whole time we were trying to get the hook out of its mouth. When we got back to Gold Star Park and he went to pull him out, that poor little duck’s feet started flapping up and down like he wanted to go swim. It was really fighting to get away then, because it was like, ‘Hey, I’m good to go.’ “Once (Williams) put (Trooper) on the ground, it took off running and started flapping its wings. You could just tell it was happy. All the geese were going crazy, doing that honking noise that they do. It was kind of like a homecoming song. The girls said, ‘Listen, Miss Jana, it’s like a homecoming song. They’re happy to see him, too.” I was trying to video him as he was going back to the water, but I got attacked by one of the geese. It bit me in the tail end trying to protect the ducks. Maybe that goose deserves a Take Action badge, too.

Vigil Birmingham Medical Center after a tragic shooting Tuesday night where he was shot in the head while riding in a car with friends on Robinson Road in Alexander City. A former classmate, 18-year-old Anthony Davon Parker has been charged with murder even though preliminary indications are that he was not intending any harm when he pulled the trigger. A crowd of 225 people gathered, including Quen’s mother Melissa Robbins who often fought back tears as people shared memories of her fallen son. She had a word of thanks and advice for all those on hand. “Thank you all for coming. I want to see you all do better,” Robbins said. “I want you all to do better. That’s what Quen wanted for us all.” Dr. Beverly Price of the Alexander City Schools said from the minute she met Quen, she knew he was different. “When he walked through those doors I noticed that he had a different walk about him,” Price said. “He walked with his head held high. He was different in that he had this quiet, humble confidence that showed that he had a purpose. I think we should all learn from that. Make your walk different. Don’t be like everyone else. There is something special about you.” Councilwoman Buffy Colvin welcomed those who attended the vigil. “We just want all of you young people who are struggling to understand all of this that we are here for you,” Colvin said. “If you need answers, if you need support or if you need a hug, we are here for you. We can get through this together.” Rev. Jimmial Harrison challenged each and every one present to hold each other up and turn to God for comfort. “God, we thank you for your guiding hand and we ask that you be with both of these families that have been touched by this tragedy,” Harrison prayed. “We ask that you reach down and touch them, because they need you Lord. … These people have come out and are standing here hand in hand asking you for your help and understanding. Right now we ask that you wrap your arms around them and let them know that through you it will be alright.” Rev. William Grant offered a prayer and a powerful message. “Don’t bow down to peer pressure,” Grant said. “Be your own person. Have fun, but you can have good clean fun. Be who you are and don’t let other lead you astray.”

Struggling to put a tragedy in perspective
We need to put F good ethics back in our leadership
P
ublic officials and officers are elected and hired to positions of our highest trust. Theses officials have been trusted to keep us safe and use tax funds wisely but not to benefit themselves. It seems everywhere we look these days, another public official is being charged with ethics violations or violating public meetings and open records laws. And it appears at all levels. Just this week we learned of another try at impeachment of Alabama Governor Robert Bentley for allegedly using the office to cover up a possible affair. This week former Camp Hill Police Chief Roosevelt Finley was arrested after the state ethics board got grand jury indictments alleging Finley used the office for personal gain. Last summer, former State Speaker of House Mike Hubbard was found guilty of ethics violations. We think some of this has been going for decades if not centuries but when will public officials clean up their act? In this day and time everyone is being scrutinized more. Technology has made this possible. No longer are things rumored but now there are mounds of documents, recordings and phone records to show the connections. More people are watching. We know there are many officials who are doing the right things and not violating the trust of the people. But we wonder if a few bad apples who are responsible for the corruption and wrongdoing have driven many from serving. Or is the system breeding the wrongdoing? Alabama politics needs ethics reform and good people who want to do the right thing for their constituents. It is our hope that constituents remain informed and involved at every level of government and one day new leaders and informed voters will rise among us to champion the change we want to see in our state and community.

irst of all, I am heartbroken today with the news that one of the sons of Alex City has lost his life. Quen Reese (Foster) had the hopes of a lot of kids his age and was a good kid whose dreams ended today. Quen was a basketball player and all around good kid who was striving to rise up from Alex City and move on to bigger adventures. The nightmare for the family has just begun and now more than ever the community needs to give support to them during this time of tragedy. I pray that God gives the family strength to weather the storm as there will be hard days ahead. There is another loss in this story, which is the person that was potentially responsible for the loss of life, Anthony Parker. He was a high school football standout and is a scholarshipped college student who is on the football team at West Alabama. I personally know him and, he not only played next to my son Daniel, but has been to my house on many occasions. He is a good kid with dreams and hopes of rising

Our bodies are living sacrifices
ave you ever gone a diet? There are very few folks I know that haven’t experienced this soul-wrenching experience at least once in their lives. Of course, there are the exceptions even in the area of weight. After all, there are those skinny people that God put on this earth to remind us pudgy people that He has a sense of humor. I’ve looked this subject of diets over pretty hard and have decided that I’m not really overweight. I think I’m just large boned, have an overactive thyroid and six inches too short. Plus, I’d love to know who designed all those charts about height and weight comparison. You can bet your bottom dollar it was one of those skinny people who wants to rub it in. Anyway, the doc says I can have 1500 calories on this diet. I thought he was talking about per meal until he started laughing. He meant per day! I eat that many every morning in two jelly donuts and a pint of chocolate milk. Even those little Asian folks that only eat rice can’t survive on 1500 calories a day. So, no matter how many sound reasons I gave about being addicted to chocolate and needing a half-pound of M&Ms a day just to

survive he still held to his original numbers. He gave me a couple of sheets of paper with a diet plan on them, but I ate them the third day along with the bark off a tree. Don’t laugh it tasted better than some of the things listed on that diet chart. I don’t think an anorexic vegetarian would make it on all the plant life he wanted me to eat. On top of that, a camel can’t drink as much water as that silly diet calls for. The only thing I can see all that water is good for is to help me with my exercises because I’m up walking half the night. Oh yeah, those exercises I’m suppose to do would have me in shape to play in the National Football League. Of course, they would have to call time out pretty often because of all that water I have to drink. Right now I’m up to three sit-ups, five push-ups and walking out to the mailbox on this diabolic and inhuman program. My lounge chair never looked so good. It’s just human nature to
want to be the best we can be, and also good stewardship to use what God has given us to the fullest. Good health is a gift from God and we ought to appreciate it and use our healthy bodies to praise Him. Being in good physical shape certainly helps our emotional well-being. And, this emotional fitness is strengthened by our spiritual acceptance of who we are. Paul said we are a living sacrifice and our bodies are given in service. We need to remember that putting our faith into action is a physical act as much as it is socially. Therefore, we need to put our physical bodies in God’s house to show the world our spiritual nature. So, be in church Sunday as a sacrifice! To tell you the truth, I have been on this diet for a couple of weeks and the first thing I lost was my patience with it. On the other hand, I did step on the scales and I’ve lost six pounds. I figure at this rate I will be too old to care by the time I get it all off. In the mean time I’ll just eat a few of these M&Ms while I’m waiting. This is kind of the last resort before auction.” Middlebrooks said this year the list includes about 34 less than last year and there are about 37,000 parcels in the county. She said while 231 sounds like a lot, it is really a small percentage of the total parcels. “That is less than last year and of that number, we have had about 10 come in today to pay,” Middlebrooks said. “I think that may be a sign that the economy is getting a little better. “The last thing we want to do is auction off someone’s property, so that’s why we do all the notices that we do, so we really try to go the extra mile to make sure there is no excuse for people not to know that their taxes are due.” Middlebrooks said typically even those who have fallen through the cracks respond when they see their name in the paper.

And the concerns of his church, he said, are both social and spiritual. “They are two sides of the same coin. Faith and actions go together,” said Reddy. “That is the way I have lived for the last 25 years and it has brought me much joy.” Reddy has been here since July 2015 and performs three masses per weekday and four on the weekend at churches in both Alexander City and at St. Marks in Ashland.

“Typically we have a pretty big rush after the names are published,” Middlebrooks said. Middlebrooks said there is a penalty for being late. There is a $5 fee, 12 percent interest as well as a certified letter fee and the fee to have it advertised in the paper. Middlebrooks said she was surprised to see how many people actually check the date the list will go for publication and make sure they pay so they will not have their name published in the paper. “Most of them don’t want their names in the paper,” Middlebrooks said. “So we have seen a lot of them come in in the last few weeks to make sure that didn’t happen.” If they don’t pay the delinquent properties are auctioned off at a public sale at the county courthouse at 10 a.m. on May 4. Middlebrooks said that’s why it’s a good idea for everyone to check the list just to be sure. “We certainly don’t want it to come to that,” Middlebrooks said. “We have great people here in Tallapoosa County. We find most of the time it is just some sort of oversight. We just want them to know that if they get a notice, they need to check on it and get it taken care of to avoid larger issues.”

Like city officials and those with paving contractor Gary Ingram Paving and Grading, Ward urges motorists to take alternate route and if they must use Lee Street, allow extra time and drive slowly. “Through traffic is strongly advised to avoid this area during road construction if at all possible,” Ward said. “This one is going to take some time and there is the potential for long delays and detours. So just beware. We ask that motorists just slow down. We want this to be safe for everyone involved.” The city worked in advance to patch some potholes along alternate

routes so those who heed the warnings will have a smoother ride. The work is funded through the Alabama Transportation Rehabilitation and Improvement Program. Washington Street will be paved from the city limits to the rail crossing near the former Russell Corp. headquarters building. But rather than having the project end where the state money does, city officials are now planning to pave the remaining portion of the road all the way to the traffic light where North Central crosses Washington using the city’s funds from the half-cent sales tax called Alexander City Road Improvement Project or ACRIP.

Richy Brooks honored Baseball field dedication pays tribute to BRHS baseball coach By CATHY HIGGINS Sports Editor
As Benjamin Russell varsity baseball head coach Richy Brooks prepared for his team’s final day of the Lake Martin Baseball Classic Thursday morning, he was taken by surprise as friends, family and students — both past and present — gathered to honor him. That honor came in the form of a ceremony rededicating the former Doc Jordan baseball field at the Charles E. Bailey Sportplex the Brooks-Jordan Field. “We want to take a moment to recognize him,” said Alexander City Sports and Recreation Director Sonny Wilson said. “He’s a hall of fame coach and he’s been here (at Benjamin Russell) 25 years.” Wilson explained that he has worked with Brooks for all of his five years of serving as Alex City Parks and Rec director, as well as his own time as a student athlete and then as a volunteer. “It’s been a privilege to work along side him,” Wilson said. The dedication ceremony included a presentation from Brooks’ first BRHS
team from the class of 1993 presenting him with a plaque commemorating his time at Benjamin Russell that has included 611 career wins, 10 area and region championships, having more than 90 players move on to play at the college level and eight players to sign pro athlete contracts. “Twenty-five years ago a couple of guys back here and I began our senior year,” said BRHS alumni Randy Stacey as he presented the plaque to Brooks. “We stepped out on this field with our first-year coach, coach Brooks. I think they’ll all back me up in saying it was a great year and we wish we’d had more. I know he’s been here 25 years and had a lot of success here. We hope he stays here as long as he wants to.” The tribute moved Brooks as he wiped away tears with a handkerchief. “It’s an honor for sure,” he said. “I know how much Doc Jordan meant to this community. So to share a field with Doc Jordan is an honor in itself. And to have these people come out who have played for me in the past to come out and to have my family here, it’s just an honor.”
Brooks wanted to share that honor with those who help make the Wildcats possible. “They put my name up there but there are a lot of people who make this team possible,” he said. “Our high school administration has always given us great support and we’ve got great support from the community.” Wilson explained that plans had been in the works for quite a while to serve Brooks with this honor. “We’ve been working on it for about two years,” he said. “But you have to go through procedures and get city approval.” Alexander City Parks and Recreation Chair Scott Hardy believes the approval is well deserved. “Congratulations to coach Richy Brooks on the great honor,” he said. “Anyone who has had the opportunity to play for him understands how deserving he is of this recognition. I want to thank Parks and Recreation Director Sonny Wilson for his role in getting this done. He was the driving force behind it all. His staff did an outstanding job with pulling this all together.”
BRHS gets swept by Chelsea in double-header By CATHY HIGGINS Sports Editor
The Lake Martin Classic Baseball Tournament ended in bitter disappointment for Benjamin Russell Thursday as the Wildcats got swept in a double-header loss to Chelsea on the newly renamed Brooks-Jordan Field at the Charles E. Bailey Sportplex. “I don’t know what’s happened to our line but we don’t have very much right now,” said Wildcats head coach Richy Brooks. “But we’ll try to figure it out.” The top half of the double-header was a back and forth grapple that slipped from Benjamin Russell’s grasp as the Wildcats were edged out by the Hornets 7-6. Chelsea started strong by scoring two runs in the first inning. But the Wildcats weren’t far behind with a score of their own, courtesy of an RBI single from Benjamin Russell senior Austin Elliott, who sent senior Timmy Lawson home from third base. The Wildcats added two more runs in the second inning, briefly taking the lead. Chelsea came back with two more runs in the third. But Benjamin Russell tied the game 4-all with another run in the inning. The Hornets pulled ahead with one more run in the fourth inning and another in the seventh. But at the bottom of the seventh the Wildcats tied the game again at 6-all with a pair of runs. It was a big play that came from Elliott with an RBI homerun that also sent freshman Brett Pitts home. “It felt nice but bittersweet because we needed the win,” Elliott said. “I was trying to do what I could for my team to keep us in the game. But we just didn’t prevail.” As the game went into the eighth,

Benjamin Russell lost the contest as Chelsea scored one more run for the win. Benjamin Russell sophomore Landon Cotney claimed the loss for the Wildcats. In four and a third innings on the pitcher’s mound he had seven strikeouts, gave up nine hits and surrendered two runs. “We were kind of in the hole when I got in there,” he said. “I was just trying to just get in there and do my job.” Despite the loss, Elliott saw improvement from the Wildcats in the game. “I think it showed signs of us beginning to fight for the game, which we haven’t done in the past,” he said. “We just need to try to build on that.” Disappointment continued in the bottom of the double-header as the Wildcats lost 10-5 to Chelsea Thursday. Things started off well for Benjamin Russell as the Wildcats scored a run in the first inning while Chelsea remained scoreless for the first two. However, the Hornets snatched the lead in the third inning with two runs. They continued to drive with three
more runs in the fourth inning, two in the fifth and three in the sixth. Meanwhile, Benjamin Russell only managed two more runs each in the sixth and seventh innings, resulting in the loss. Despite the loss, Cotney had two RBIs and sophomore Nic McGhee had three hits for the Wildcats. Benjamin Russell senior Cody Hanners took the loss of the second game for the Wildcats. In three innings at the mound he had three strikeouts, allowed a walk, gave up five hits and surrendered two runs. Cotney was especially disappointed with the losses, as they fell on the day their field was renamed to honor their coach. “It’s really disappointing because we especially should have won today but didn’t,” he said. Thursday’s losses drop Benjamin Russell’s overall season record to 16-11. The Wildcats next head to Sylacauga Saturday to take on the Aggies at 10 a.m. Benjamin Russell’s next home game is Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. when the Wildcats host area opponent Opelika.
