Council to reinstate suit against mill owner By CARMEN RODGERS Staff Writer
The Tallassee City Council voted unanimously Tuesday night to reinstate a lawsuit against east side mill owner Tommy Hudson that was dropped
without prejudice last year because there has been no cleanup effort at the site in more than three months. “About a year ago we dropped the lawsuit without prejudice, meaning we didn’t really drop it,” Tallassee Mayor Johnny Hammock said. “We can ramp
it back up.” “It would have to be refiled,” city attorney John Smith said. “Since it was dismissed without prejudice there is no reason why it can’t be refiled.” According to Hammock, he and Hudson had reached an agreement but
over time Hudson failed to keep up his end of the deal. “I reached out to Tommy Hudson, we started talking and he started cleaning up,” Hammock said. “At that point everything was going fine and good but See SUIT • Page A3

Does it seem like school just let out for summer? With less than a month before the first day of class, it is almost time for students to head back to school for the 2018-19 school year. This means back to school shopping is also right around the corner. Alabama will offer the annual sales tax holiday to help offset the burden of furnishing students with the needed supplies to succeed. The City of Tallassee is also participating in the taxfree weekend. This means big savings for shoppers. The tax-free weekend will begin at 12:01 a.m. on Friday, July 21, and end at midnight on Sunday, July 23. This is the state’s 12th annual sales tax holiday giving shoppers the opportunity to purchase certain school supplies, computers, and clothing free of state sales or use tax. Tallassee Mayor Johnny Hammock has been pushing for a hotel chain to take up residence in town. However, in order to attract a national hotel franchise a feasibility study is needed. “A feasibility study will determine if we need a hotel and what size the hotel would need to be,” Hammock said. Hammock said he knew the study was a necessity long ago, but funding was an issue. After a lot of research, the city applied for a USDA Opportunity Grant that would cover the majority of the study. “We found the USDA grant and reached out to CARPDC (Central Alabama Regional Planning and Development Commission) and they said they would help us apply for it and write it,” Hammock said. “After that it’s a waiting game. But it came back and we got it.” The feasibility study will cost $10,100. The USDA grant will cover $9,600 and See HOTEL • Page A3

Places for recreation, creating memories aren’t far away By CLIFF WILLIAMS Staff Writer
E
veryone is bombarded with images of far off places for creating memories for families or for vacations. Many people dream and save for those trips, but there are opportunities nearby that serve
the same purpose, creating bonds and memories for families. And the best thing about them is most are free, the rest are low cost and all can be reached with the gas in your tank currently. The Cherokee Ridge Alpine Trail Association (CRATA) was created in 2004 and with the vision of Jimmy Lanier, has created a series of trails in See RECREATION • Page A6
