Campfire Ministry moves into The Company Store
By CARMEN RODGERS Staff Writer
The historic Company Store has new occupants. Daniel and Jenny Hatfield are the newest tenants. The couple operates a faith-based thrift store that funds programs aimed at working with the unemployed, training the under-employed and lending a helping hand to those in need through Campfire Ministries. The couple moved to Eclectic from Indiana in 2015 with only a vision of ministering to those who need it the most. Campfire Ministries has been in existence

for 12 years with the mission of serving the community. “We moved to Eclectic two years ago and started a woodworking business that employees the unemployed,” said Daniel Hatfield, pastor at Campfire Ministry of Tallassee. “We opened the thrift store about 20 weeks ago. The thrift store helps fund our programs like the drug and alcohol counseling.” The previous thrift store was located in downtown Eclectic in the former Bowles building on Highway 63. The new location is much larger, providing space that the ministry has big plans for. “The Lord opened up a door with this See MINISTRY • Page 2

Does it seem like school just let out for summer? With less than a month before the first day of class, it is almost time for students to head back to school for the 201718 school year. That means back-to-school shopping is also right around the corner. Alabama will offer the annual sales tax holiday to help offset the burden of furnishing students with the needed supplies to succeed. The City of Tallassee is also participating in the tax-free weekend, meaning big potential savings for shoppers. The tax-free weekend will begin at 12:01 a.m. on Friday, July 21, and end at midnight on Sunday, July 23. This is the state’s twelfth annual sales tax holiday giving shoppers the opportunity to purchase certain school supplies, computers, and clothing free of state sales or use tax. “The sales tax may seem like a small amount, but that small amount adds up to big savings for the consumer,” said Michone Roye, See TAX • Page 2

Dam Century Ride planned for Sept. 23 By CARMEN RODGERS Staff Writer
The Tallassee Chamber of Commerce is gearing up for the first annual Dam Century Ride. The event is set for Sept. 23. Registration for this event has already begun and will be open until the day of the ride. With cyclists from around the southeast expected to come to Tallassee, the Chamber hopes this event will spotlight the city and all it has to offer. There will be three courses to choose from so riders of all skill levels may take part in the upcoming ride. An 18-19mile course will be offered for
the beginner cyclist and, for the more experienced cyclist, a 60- or 100-mile course will also be available to ride. This is the second annual Dam Century Ride. Last year was a first-of-its-kind event for Tallassee. There were many cyclists from the area and the event also drew cyclists from around the region. “I am really excited about it,” said Michone Roye, director of The Greater Tallassee Area Chamber of Commerce. “It has been a lot of hard work and it’s been a massive undertaking, but it’s coming together and See RIDE • Page 7
