DEAR ABBY: My nephew, “Logan,” is a sophomore in high school. He is a bright, awesome kid who is on the autism spectrum. He is very high-functioning, even on a higher level than Asperger’s. But the social struggles/issues are still there. To this day, my sister refuses to tell Logan about his autism. She feels immense guilt and goes into panic mode every time I bring it up. She thinks he wouldn’t be able to handle it. The poor kid knows something is wrong but doesn’t know what. Can I tell him? Or if it’s morally wrong to tell him, can I tell him when he is 18? I am a nurse, and I strongly believe everyone should know everything about their conditions, mental as well as physical. But it’s tough with my nephew because he is still a minor. -CAN I TELL HIM? I understand that it may cover some mature subjects like selling drugs, violence, sex and living in the ‘hood. But I still find rap songs to be a pleasure to listen to. Am I wrong to enjoy rap music? Suit filed over lake water retention STAFF REPORT TPI Staff
Lake Martin Resource Association (LMRA) and Russell Lands On Lake Martin have taken court action in the ongoing ‘Water Wars’ matter over water retention in the Alabama Coosa Tallapoosa river watershed. LMRA legal officer Steve Forehand this week released a statement indicating that LMRA and Russell Lands filed a Motion to Intervene in the U.S.
District Court case against the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (COE) over the corps’ new water control manual. The suit was filed last year by the State of Alabama and Alabama Power Company. The suit centers around the COE operations of Lake Allatoona on the Coosa River system in Georgia, Forehand said. The recently issued water control manual provides absolute authority to the COE to limit or stop discharges from Lake Allatoona to
preserve recreational pool levels there until mid-November, which could adversely affect water levels at Lake Martin. “Due to Alabama Power Company’s agreement with the Corps of Engineers to provide navigation flow in the Alabama River, less water coming down the Coosa River means that more water has to be released from the Tallapoosa River system – and Lake Martin – to satisfy the flow requirements,” Forehand explained.
The State’s lawsuit alleges that the COE manual improperly allocates recreational storage of water in Lake Allatoona, which was not a purpose authorized by Congress when the dam that created Lake Allatoona was built. The Water Works and Sanitary Sewer Board of the City of Montgomery and the Board of Water and Sewer Commissioners of the City of Mobile also have intervened in the lawsuit.

Do you have a little one in your home that is so excited he’s having trouble with the wait for Santa Claus? Well, here are a few things that may help occupy that child’s mind while he awaits the Jolly Old Elf’s big arrival. NORAD, or the North American Aerospace Defense Command, is the agency that helps protect the airspace above the United States from global threats. But at Christmas, they take on a very special extra role – they track Santa! Although the NORAD tracker went live on the first day of December, you won't actually be able to follow the jolly fellow until the night before Christmas. It will start tracking him from 8 p.m. tonight. Using special radar technology, Father Christmas can be located from the moment Rudolph leads the way and lifts off from the North Pole. St. Nick will visit children in the middle of the night where they are around the world, giving all the kids on the nice list

Troopers with the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency stopped by Russell Medical Friday morning to continue a decades long tradition – handing out Trooper teddy bears to hospitalized children. “For over 25 years we have been going around and handing them out to kids that are hospitalized at Christmas time,” Sgt. Steve Jarrett said. “The bears are purchased with funds given by the public to the Alabama State Trooper Association. We normally give out about 500 bears at Christmas time.”

A local agency has been awarded a $62,377 grant from the state to help residents learn new life and job skills. Community Action Committee ChambersTallapoosa-Coosa was one of 21 agencies across the state Gov. Robert Bentley announced Friday that will receive grants totaling in $3.1 million for programs that help low income residents take steps to secure gainful employment and improve their quality of life. The Community Services Block Grants will enable 21 community action agencies throughout the state to assist low-income residents in achieving self-sufficiency and to address barriers to success through a variety of programs and services. The specific needs of the communities served determine which programs are available, which can include job search assistance and short-term employment skills classes, parenting classes, transitional housing, summer youth programs, See GRANT • Page 5
Things at the Lake Martin Animal Shelter are looking pretty good for the holidays. The shelter currently has only eight cats for adoption and few more dogs but Director Mia Chandler is happy with the way things are. “I am pretty stoked,” Chandler said Thursday. “I have never been in a position to have this few. It’s pretty nice. If all the cats get adopted, that would be awesome.” Chandler explained the reasons for the low animal population at the shelter. “Adoptions have picked up and so have claims,” Chandler said. “Typically in December we have

higher adoptions. If there has been a year long want in a family, often they will come and adopt. People are often in a different mood in December. If they have been wavering, often times they will say why not and come in.” Financially the shelter is doing good as well, which will allow some needed repairs at the shelter. “We have not had any bad cases, knock on wood,” Chandler explained. “No bad orthopedics, or bad provo. Donations have been good. Financial donations have been great. Thanks to all of that we are going to be able to replace all of the broken Plexiglass doors in the kennels. That is a $3,000 gig there, a costly repair for us.” Chandler thinks the year will still end well. See ANIMALS • Page 5

Some of my little friends say there is no Santa Claus. Papa says, “If you see it in The Sun, it’s so.” Please tell me the truth, is there a Santa Claus? You might get your papa to hire men to watch in all the chimneys on Christmas Eve to catch Santa Claus, but even if you did not see Santa Claus coming down, what would that prove? Nobody
sees Santa Claus, but that is no sign that there is no Santa Claus. The most real things in the world are those that neither children nor men can see. Did you ever see fairies dancing on the lawn? Of course not, but that’s no proof that they are not there. Nobody can conceive or imagine all the wonders there are unseen and unseeable in the world. You tear apart the baby’s rattle and see what makes the noise inside, but there is a veil covering the unseen world, which not the strongest man, nor even the united strength of all the strongest men that ever lived could tear apart. Only faith, poetry, love, romance, can push aside that curtain and view and picture the supernal beauty and glory beyond. Is it all real? Ah, Virginia, in all this world there is nothing else real and abiding. No Santa Claus! Thank God! He lives and lives forever. A thousand years from now, Virginia, nay 10 times 10,000 years from now, he will continue to make glad the heart of childhood.

Merry Christmas, everyone!
hristmas. It’s means many things to many peo-
ple. Mostly, it means the birth of Jesus and conjures up the Biblical story of the wise men following a star to the divine child lying in a manger, wrapped in swaddling clothes. But Christmas also means the exhange of gifts with those we love and looks of wonder on the faces of our children, grandchildren and other loved ones on a magical Christmas morning. I was fortunate to be raised in a household that placed importance on both of those aspects of the season. My parents made sure we knew what the season was really about, but would also go to the ends of the earth to find the presents on our lists. Rarely do I recall a request that wasn’t filled. My Christmases were all wonderful in the most literal sense of that word. My grandmother and grandfather weren’t as wellto-do as my parents, but my grandmother never disappointed. She made and gave homemade gifts that I realize today were the best of all. Once, not able to afford to buy me a stuffed toy, she made me a stuffed kangaroo, complete with a baby stuffed kangaroo inside its pouch. But Christmas wasn’t without its tragedies. Like the time I got a Wilt Chamberlain-autographed basketball and on my first

shot with it, impaled it on a splinter protruding from our backyard basketball goal’s creosote supporting post. It stuck there, letting out a sickening deflating whimper. Then there was the time my brother received a BB gun with – as he would soon discover – a plastic stock. When he set it on a heater at my grandmother’s house, he came back to a literal hot mess. There were the baseball gloves, the footballs, the Auburn football uniforms and the bicycles through the years. There were tears shed when things broke too quickly, usually on Christmas Day. In my family, there were fruit and fireworks and giant candy canes. Between the candy canes and the Lifesavers books (remember those?), dentists made millions. And there were those odd, almost forgotten gifts that should’ve never been. There were the Creepy Crawlers, where children like me were encouraged to use high heat to turn liquid into jellylike bugs and other critters. Who can forget lawn darts and the havoc they created (Thankfully, I never owned
any, so I’m here today to write this column.)? Or clackers, the ultimate in armbruisers? With the love and care of my parents and grandparents, I survived it all. Now, it’s my turn. I see now why my mother and father would search high and low for gifts for us. I see now why my grandmother would sew until her fingers bled to create something especially for me. I see now why my father’s step grew jauntier when he tucked a little more than he had originally intended into the Salvation Army kettle. I see now why Mom took so much pleasure in buying a toy for a tot she didn’t know. It’s plain and simple and basic and something all of us have but always need more of. It’s love. When I see the eyes of my three grandchildren light up, when I feel their arms around my neck in appreciation, when I hear their shrieks of joy, I am loved. Which brings us right back to the first word of this column. Christmas. It’s as pure as the season’s first snow, as magical as a reindeer’s flight. Christmas is love. Merry Christmas, everyone! Residents seeking assistance should contact their local community action agency. “These programs and services are valuable in helping low-income families along the path to self-sufficiency,” Bentley said. “I am pleased to support the efforts of community action agencies across Alabama to help many of these families learn new skills to improve their quality of life.” The Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs is administering the grants from funds made available by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. Tis the Season to be Safe Don’t Drink & Drive The Christmas season is one of the busiest times on state roads as people use area highways to visit loved ones and celebrate the holiday season. With the seasonal hustle and bustle during that period, law enforcement expects the state’s roadways to be much busier than usual and is increasing its patrols to help protect lives and promote highway safety. Local law enforcement authorities will join the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA) in stepping up their patrols of the state’s roadways during the holiday season, which runs from midnight tomorrow night through midnight Jan. 2. But of¿cials including Tallapoosa County Sheriff Jimmy Abbett said that motorists can do their part to help keep the roads safe. “We always try to step up our patrols during the holidays,” Abbett said. “We don’t really look for anything special, we just perform our general routines. But we do encourage people not to drink and drive, to wear their seat belts and especially not to text
and drive.” Alexander City Police Chief Willie G. Robinson said that celebrations also include alcohol, but people should plan ahead to make sure they have a sober driver behind the wheel. “We say it all the time, but designate a driver,” Robinson said. “It’s not worth jeopardizing your safety and, your freedom and the lives of others to drive after consuming alcohol. “We always participate with the state troopers in increasing our patrols. We’ll have extra patrols and we’ll have of¿cers out on foot in our shopping areas. We’ll be out there keeping the speeds down, keeping the crime down and doing our best to ensure everyone has a happy and safe holiday.” It also is important to buckle up every time – no matter how short the trip. Of the individuals killed in traf¿c crashes during the 2015 holiday travel period, there were two pedestrians. Sixteen of those killed were traveling in vehicles equipped with seat belts, but nine of them were not using them.

Pining for that coveted childhood Christmas gift
I
t had red, flashing lights, a tiny LED screen for a football field, directional buttons, a complete scoreboard and even blew a whistle at the end of each play. Mattel Electronics Football: Nine volts, two thumbs, an A/C adapter and the power to control Walter Payton in the palms of my hands. I wanted it. I had to have it. It would be mine. Just like young Ralphie yearned for that special Red Ryder BB Gun in the 1983 film classic “Christmas Story,” Christmas morning of 1977 would not be complete without football, anywhere, anytime. I sat on three different Santa’s laps and made sure Mom and Dad knew my life would end without it. There were no subtle hints. It was either Mattel Football or a long, cold winter, though winters in temperate Daytona Beach, home of my youth, were neither long nor cold. The magic morning arrived and I raced to the tree in my aqua and orange Miami Dolphins pajamas (there are probably photos somewhere, but let’s not go there). A few big-ticket items rested beneath the well-lit Frasier Fir … a Tyco electric slot car track, a pair of brown corduroy pants (nothing like 1970s fashion), a Spalding punching bag which I could use today, and a stocking stuffed to the gills. Yeah … that’s where it’s at. The game fits perfectly into a stocking. So do little football-shaped chocolate balls. And chocolate Santas. And a few Matchbox cars. And socks. And more chocolate. And a stinking battery. Well that’s great. I could dip my milk chocolate footballs in battery acid for breakfast. There I was, moping at the breakfast table in my aqua and orange PJs wanting badly to put a fist into that new, red punching bag. My electronic wish remained just that … a wish. Christmas sure is different when you’re a kid. You want, you want, you want, and then you want some more. I’ve learned that Christmas should have nothing to do with wants. Christmas should be about the spirit of giving, and judging by the population of local retailers, I’d say the spirit of giving, or maxing out credit cards, is in full swing. Someone asked me the other day what I wanted for Christmas, and it was a personal revelation to realize that not only did I not know the answer to their question, but I hadn’t given it a second thought. Hmm … so what do I want for Christmas? I want to wake up and know that every new day is a gift. I would love a day, or two, that I didn’t have to go anywhere or do anything. I would also greatly appreciate it if my neighbor’s dogs would either shut up, or have an encounter with roaming coyotes. Early Christmas morning I would like to open the refrigerator door and find a bottle of grape-flavored, ice-cold Advocare Spark and jar of peanut butter (yes, I like mine cold). After that, I’d like to turn on the Christmas tree and vegetate for a while. Maybe I’ll think about that electronic football game. A note to kids … just because you’ve opened all of your presents under the tree and your prize wish didn’t immediately come true, please remember what’s important — you have people who love you. One more thing — be sure to look deep inside the tree behind the decorations and lights. Sometimes parents will plant smaller gifts onto one of the limbs. Like hand-held electronic football games. LIGHTNING IN A BOTTLE Outlook Player of the Year Raymond Graham helps Central Coosa make gridiron history By CATHY HIGGINS Sports Editor
The distinction of the Outlook 2016 Player of the Year goes to Central Coosa senior quarterback Raymond Graham. Graham earned this title by racking up unbelievable numbers in his final year of his high school football career. This season he had 95 of 185 passing for 1,352 yards and 17 touchdowns. Graham also ran the ball 215 times for 1,626 yards and 24 TDs. He also had 48 kick returns and 34 punt returns. His total offense amounted to 3,399 yards. Central Coosa head football coach Barry Simmons expressed his appreciation for Graham’s recognition. “Let me say thank you on behalf of Raymond for that honor,” he said. “Raymond is a great kid, he always works hard in preparation for the season and each game.” Graham stands at 5 feet, 7 inches tall and weighs 170 pounds. While that’s not the typical build for a star athlete, it definitely worked for Graham in 2016. “Although he is often times not the biggest per-

son in the game he always has the most competitive drive on the field,” Simmons said. “He looks at obstacles as opportunities and never quits. He is true product of what talent plus a great work ethic can produce.” The highlight of Graham’s season was the game that made state history for highest scoring — the season
closer against Childersburg in which the Cougars lost 82-64. That night the quarterback scored four rushing touchdowns and threw for three more. He also made 267 yards rushing on 23 carries and made nine passes for 162 yards. “He had a monster game,” Simmons said. “He was basically all the offense we had
that night.” The coach also pointed to Graham’s touchdown-pass play in the Cougars’ 33-22 loss to Prattville Christian Academy as a season highlight. “But he’s had a lot of big games, both rushing and throwing,” Simmons said. With Graham’s senior football season behind him, he now has his sights set on playing at the collegiate level while studying agriculture and business. “We’re in the middle of getting him ready to retake the ACT,” Simmons said. “We’re talking to some NAIA (National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics) schools and some junior colleges. But if we can get him a higher ACT score, there are some more schools that can look at him.” Regardless of what the future holds for Graham, Simmons is proud for what he has accomplished this season. “He has been an honor to coach and get to know,” Simmons said. “He is a great young man with a bright future. I look forward to seeing what he will accomplish in life.”

I was a new mom just starting out with this mom thing, trying to be perfect at everything. We didn’t have much but one thing we had for sure was love. However, this particular Christmas I wanted him to have everything since it was his first one. To my surprise, the only thing that seemed to grasps his attention was a red empty box. He was so happy just playing with a red empty box. Then, it hit me all at once: I knew exactly the lesson God was trying to teach me. Gifts are temporary. Love and family are forever. What a special Christmas.
